Navigating the Complexities of Midlife Relationships
by Dr. Sandra Wright
Maintaining relationships in midlife can be a richly rewarding yet challenging endeavor. As individuals enter their 40s, 50s, and beyond, they often face a unique set of life changes that can impact their relationships with partners, friends, and family members. Whether it's managing career transitions, dealing with the demands of aging parents, or navigating the complexities of adult children, the midlife period requires a renewed focus on sustaining and nurturing relationships. Here is something to guide you through understanding and maintaining vital connections during midlife.
Understanding Midlife Transitions
Midlife is often marked by significant transitions. Career changes, health issues, and evolving family dynamics can all create stress and strain on relationships. Recognizing these changes and their potential impacts is the first step toward maintaining strong connections.
Career Transitions: For many, midlife brings about career transitions, whether it's a change in job, a shift toward retirement, or taking on new roles and responsibilities. These changes can affect personal relationships, particularly if one partner is experiencing job stress or if retirement alters daily routines and financial dynamics.
Health and Wellness: Midlife can also bring about health concerns, both for oneself and loved ones. Chronic illnesses, menopause, or the need for increased medical care can be sources of stress. Maintaining open communication about health issues and supporting each other through these challenges is crucial.
Family Dynamics: As children grow up and leave the nest, parents often face the "empty nest" syndrome. Additionally, the responsibility of caring for aging parents can add another layer of complexity. Balancing these dynamics requires patience, understanding, and a strong support system.
Strengthening Partner Relationships
A significant portion of midlife relationship maintenance focuses on romantic partnerships. Keeping these relationships strong involves ongoing effort, communication, and mutual respect.
Effective Communication: Open, honest, and empathetic communication is the cornerstone of any healthy relationship. During midlife, partners should prioritize regular check-ins to discuss their feelings, concerns, and aspirations. Listening actively and validating each other's experiences can help in resolving conflicts and reinforcing the bond.
Quality Time: With busy schedules and numerous responsibilities, finding quality time together can be challenging. However, it is essential to prioritize activities that both partners enjoy. Whether it's a weekend getaway, a regular date night, or simply a walk together, spending quality time strengthens the emotional connection.
Shared Goals and Interests: Pursuing shared goals and interests can reinvigorate relationships. Whether it’s taking up a new hobby, planning for retirement, or engaging in community service together, shared activities can bring partners closer and create a sense of teamwork and mutual accomplishment.
CHIC SAVANT 7
Seeking Professional Help: Sometimes, relationships may need external support. Couples therapy can provide valuable tools for navigating midlife transitions and maintaining a healthy partnership. Professional guidance can help address underlying issues and foster a deeper understanding between partners.
Nurturing Friendships
Friendships are an integral part of life, providing emotional support, companionship, and a sense of belonging. Midlife can be a time when old friendships fade, but it's also an opportunity to nurture existing bonds and form new connections.
Staying Connected: In the hustle and bustle of midlife, it's easy to lose touch with friends. Making a conscious effort to stay connected is vital. Regular phone calls, meet-ups, or even virtual catch-ups can keep friendships alive and thriving.
Making New Friends: Midlife is also a great time to make new friends who share similar interests and experiences. Joining clubs, taking classes, or participating in community events can open doors to new social circles and enriching relationships.
Support Networks: Building a strong support network is essential during midlife. Friends can offer different perspectives and provide support during challenging times. Cultivating a circle of friends who can offer both practical help and emotional support is invaluable.
.
Family Connections
Maintaining family relationships can be particularly challenging as family dynamics evolve. Adult children, aging parents, and extended family members all require attention and care.
Adult Children: Relationships with adult children can shift significantly as they establish their independence. Maintaining a balance between offering support and respecting their autonomy is crucial. Open communication and setting healthy boundaries can foster positive relationships.
Aging Parents: Caring for aging parents can be demanding. It’s important to share responsibilities with siblings or other family members and seek external support when necessary. Regular family meetings can help in planning and ensuring that everyone’s needs are addressed.
Extended Family: Extended family relationships can also provide a sense of continuity and support. Regular family gatherings, reunions, or even maintaining active communication can strengthen these bonds.
Midlife is a period of transformation and growth. While it presents unique challenges, it also offers opportunities for deepening and enriching relationships. By prioritizing communication, spending quality time together, and building strong support networks, individuals can maintain and even strengthen their connections with partners, friends, and family. Embracing these strategies not only helps in navigating the complexities of midlife but also ensures that relationships remain a source of joy, support, and fulfillment.

Shutting Down Anxiety and Building Resilience by Releasing
the Power Within
by Jannie Edwards
Shutting down anxiety and building resilience by releasing the power within is different for everyone
We all have different mentalities which means that an off the shelf solution cannot be determined by a one size fits all remedy. It takes hard work and determination to accomplish this task or new way of life without self-made anxiety. Resilience is the ability to bounce back and continue to live a blissful life. We all have power within that can be brought to the surface with self-knowledge.
Anxiety is a serious obstacle to confront and defeat. Some people display negative feelings of restlessness associated with fear, dread, and always afraid to tackle anything that will keep life running smoothly. Symptoms of anxiety can include breaking out in cold sweats and tension. Anxiety can possibly affect your health by increasing your heartbeat and feeding depression. Students often experience anxiety during test taking. Adults many times fear doctors’ visits for various reasons and get the “White Coat” syndrome which makes their blood pressure heighten.
Anxiety causes stress that affects a person’s mind and body. Stress caused by anxiety is a deterrent to good health. Life itself can be a struggle when to dealing with the high costs of living which includes rent, car insurance, increase in the cost of utilities due to climate change. We need to find ways to deal with unnecessary stress. There has to be a way for people to find ways of dealing with anxiety by building resilience. When something gets you down, there are ways to confront feelings or undue stress to bring us back to a healthy peace.
Involvement in committing to community services, church activities, self-confidence, and placing oneself as the nucleus of your life can be the key to a smooth-running existence. Anxiety should not be allowed to continue to spin out of control. Self-care is essential in maintaining a healthy lifestyle to combat negative feelings that cause depression. It is easy for a person that does not suffer from anxiety to explain to those affected how to eradicate feelings of hopelessness, but it is not that easy for sufferers to conquer.
Building resilience can be done by making sincere efforts to deal with a problem by letting go and moving on. Self-care can begin by talking to trustworthy friends, meditation, concentrating on your physical health, relaxation, building confidence, and setting goals.
A conversation with a friend can be very helpful. Long term friends have a way of going back to a happy place in time. I have friends that I have known most of my life. We grew up together, graduated from high school at the same time and were even roommates in college. We try to get together annually for fun purposes. These visits are calming and a great reduction of stress and a way to forget problems. We look forward to hanging out each year. It is a time to become nineteen years old again when life was fairly new, and just beginning. Of course, all people do not have a great outlet to getting rid of mental tension and difficulties in life, but this can be a start.
Meditating on your life and lifestyle can be a way to improve self-worth. Try breathing exercises to calm down and think about the problem.
CHIC SAVANT 13
Problems cannot be solved by ignoring the fact that something is not right. Recognizing the root cause of the problem is helpful in dissecting and breaking down the reason for the anxiety.
Physical health care is very important in maintaining self-confidence. I have been attending a fitness center and I feel like an athlete. I am not bragging about how majestic I go about working out but the fact that I am attempting to feel better about myself is a great way to start strengthening myself physically and mentally. Sometimes I feel like crawling out of the fitness center, but I still feel a sense of accomplishment that only affects me.
Relaxation is key to decrease stress effects on your mind and body. The possibility of getting away to an island is almost impossible to most people. There are so many other ways a person can find a way to be comfortable in their own. A hot bath can sometimes release endorphins to lower stress and improve or change your sense of well-being.
Building confidence comes with believing in you. By realizing that if something can be accomplished by another individual, it can also be accomplished by oneself as well.
Here are some tips to improve and build self-confidence:
-Take care of yourself. Make sure you're getting enough sleep, eating well, and moving your body in ways that feel good.
- keep your promises.
- Move in ways that feel good.
- Celebrate small victories.
- Stay true to your values.
- Acknowledge your achievements and create self-goals
Setting goals can only be created by self while focusing on your strengths, exercising, confidence, developing positive habits, and cultivating resilience. After you have recreated yourself, it is easier to bounce back by releasing the power within. Remember, you are the only person responsible for releasing your power from within.

Exploring the Timeless Echoes: The Jazz Journeys of Hazel Scott and Selena
by Danielle Johnson
I am a lover of music and thought it would be fitting to explore the greatness of two amazing legends for Women’s History Month. In the vibrant tapestry of music history, certain individuals leave indelible marks, weaving their melodies into the fabric of our cultural consciousness. Two such luminaries, jazz pianist and singer Hazel Scott and the incomparable Selena, stand as pillars in their respective realms, enriching the world with their unique voices and musical legacies. Though from different eras and genres, their stories intertwine through the universal language of music, bridging generations and captivating audiences worldwide.
Hazel Scott Born in the hallowed streets of New Orleans, Hazel Scott emerged as a prodigious talent, her fingers dancing effortlessly across the ivories from an early age. Raised in a household steeped in jazz, her musical journey began with the rich heritage of the genre pulsating through her veins. Inspired by the likes of Duke Ellington and Thelonious Monk, Scott carved her own niche, infusing traditional jazz with her distinct flair.
Scott's prowess as both a pianist and vocalist set her apart in a male-dominated industry. With each note she struck and each lyric she crooned, she transported audiences to smoky jazz clubs and moonlit ballrooms, where the music flowed like fine wine. Her improvisational skills were legendary, transforming every performance into a journey of sonic exploration.
Despite her undeniable talent, Scott's path to success was fraught with challenges. In an era marked by racial segregation and discrimination, she faced barriers that threatened to stifle her artistry. Yet, with unwavering determination, she shattered those barriers, blazing a trail for future generations of jazz musicians.
Scott's discography is a testament to her musical prowess, with albums like "Midnight Serenade" and "Soulful Reverie" garnering critical acclaim. Each composition was a mosaic of emotion, with Scott's velvety voice and intricate piano arrangements painting vivid portraits of love, loss, and everything in between.
Beyond her musical contributions, Scott was a beacon of inspiration, using her platform to advocate for social change. Whether through benefit concerts or impassioned speeches, she championed causes close to her heart, leaving an indelible mark on both the music industry and society at large.
Though she may have left this world, Scott's legacy endures, her music serving as a timeless reminder of the power of art to transcend boundaries and unite humanity in harmony.
Selena: The Queen of Tejano Music
In a sun-drenched corner of Texas, another musical luminary was born a young girl with a voice that would captivate the hearts of millions. Selena QuintanillaPérez, known simply as Selena, rose from humble beginnings to become a global icon, leaving an indelible imprint on the world of music.
CHIC SAVANT 15
Raised in a musical family, Selena's journey began at an early age, performing with her siblings in their family band, Selena y Los Dinos. Blessed with a voice that radiated warmth and soul, she quickly became the group's shining star, captivating audiences with her electrifying stage presence and infectious energy.
Selena's breakthrough came with the rise of Tejano music, a fusion of traditional Mexican folk music with elements of pop, rock, and country. With her unparalleled vocal talent and charismatic persona, she became the genre's undisputed queen, breaking down barriers and paving the way for future Latinx artists.
Her album "Entre a Mi Mundo" catapulted her to stardom, earning her widespread acclaim and a devoted fan base. Songs like "Como la Flor" and "Bidi Bidi Bom Bom" became anthems of empowerment and resilience, resonating with audiences across cultural divides.
Yet, Selena's legacy extends beyond her musical achievements. She was a trailblazer, shattering stereotypes, and challenging conventions at every turn. As a Latina woman in a maledominated industry, she faced her share of adversity, but she refused to be silenced, using her platform to uplift her community and advocate for equality.
Tragically, Selena's life was cut short at the peak of her career, but her spirit lives on through her music and the countless lives she touched. Her influence can be felt in every corner of the music world, from pop to Latin to beyond, a testament to the enduring power of her legacy.
The Intersection of Legacies
Though their paths may have never crossed in life, Hazel Schott and Selena share a common bond through their love of music and their enduring impact on the world. Both women defied expectations and blazed trails in their respective genres, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire and resonate with audiences today.
Their stories serve as a reminder of the transformative power of music to uplift, to unite, and to transcend barriers of race, gender, and culture. In a world often divided, their melodies offer a glimpse of unity, reminding us of our shared humanity and the universal language that connects us all.
As we celebrate the legacies of Hazel Schott and Selena, let us not only honor their contributions to the world of music but also carry forward their spirit of resilience, passion, and unyielding determination. For in their melodies, we find echoes of our own journeys, weaving together the rich tapestry of the human experience in all its beauty and complexity. As women let us continue to celebrate and uplift each other always.

I’m
Extraordinary
but I feel so
By Dr. Sandra Wright
Embrace the Paradox
Feeling ordinary despite knowing you're special is a paradox many grapple with. It’s natural to experience this conflict. Recognizing your unique qualities while feeling grounded in your daily experiences is part of the human journey.
The Comparison Trap
One reason you might feel ordinary is the tendency to compare yourself to others. Social media and societal pressures often amplify this. Remember, everyone's journey is unique, and comparing your behind-the-scenes to someone else's highlight reel can diminish your self-worth.
Rediscover Your Passions
Reflect on what makes you feel alive and passionate. Engaging in activities that excite you can reignite your sense of specialness. Your passions and talents are unique to you and nurturing them can remind you of your extraordinary potential.
Celebrate Small Victories
Ordinariness can stem from overlooking your accomplishments. Celebrate your small victories and milestones. Each step forward, no matter how minor, contributes to your growth and success. Recognize and honor these achievements regularly.
Reflect on Your Impact
Consider the impact you have on others. Your kindness, support, and contributions, no matter how small, make a difference. Reflecting on the positive influence you have can help you appreciate your unique role in the lives of those around you.
Embrace Your Authentic Self
Authenticity is a key component of feeling special. Embrace who you are, including your quirks and imperfections. Authenticity attracts genuine connections and helps you feel more confident in your unique identity
Pursue Growth and Learning
Continual growth and learning can enhance your sense of specialness. Pursue new skills, hobbies, or knowledge areas that interest you. Personal development fosters a sense of accomplishment and reinforces your unique capabilities.
Practice Mindfulness
Mindfulness helps you stay present and appreciate the moment. It can reduce feelings of inadequacy and ordinary by helping you focus on your inner strengths and achievements. Regular mindfulness practice can cultivate a deeper appreciation for your uniqueness.
Reframe Your Perspective
Sometimes, feeling ordinary is a matter of perspective. Reframe how you view yourself and your experiences. Instead of focusing on what you lack, concentrate on your strengths, achievements, and the positive aspects of your life. Feeling ordinary doesn’t negate your specialness. It's a common experience that can be addressed through selfreflection, compassion, and personal growth. Embrace your unique journey, celebrate your individuality, and remember that your worth is not diminished by occasional feelings of ordinariness. You are special, and your journey is uniquely yours.

Ordinary—Why?
DO YOU HAVE CAREGIVERS’GUILT?
By Doris Dickerson
I was recently a co-caregiver. However, I was the main one that was the caregiver of my sister. My sister was too much to handle, and her son didn’t help that much. I had to rearrange my schedule and many times I had to get my husband to help instead of her son.
We as Black women beholden to gender, racial and ethnic conditioning about the role of caregiver are often expected to carry on legacies of caring for loved ones. Navigating the complexities of caregiving while balancing our own professional and social lives can also engender what’s called caregiver guilt. Caregivers experience this distinct type of guilt when we believe we aren’t doing enough for our loved one and we regret taking time to focus on ourselves. This guilt often compounds the existing stress of caregiving and can complicate the relationship with our loved one.
Eventually, my sister’s son stopped helping, and I had to enlist the full-time help of my husband. I was really tired and could not do much of anything. The guilt really started to set-in as well as the anger. Who was I angry with? Was I angry with myself, my sister or her son? I suddenly realized I was angry at all three. I was angry with my sister because she would not listen to me and got herself into the situation that she was in at the time. Angrier at her son because he dropped his mother in my lap and took off.
When I am aware that I’m feeling guilty, I check in and ask myself: “What exactly do I feel guilty about?” After authentically reflecting on my responses, I write down why I believe I’m feeling guilty. At different times I have discovered the guilt was rooted in my beliefs that I have to be the perfect sister and caregiver; I am the only person who can ensure all of my sister’s needs are met; and that my sister’s needs should always be prioritized over my own. These personal check-ins allow me to examine the situation, interrogate the validity of the thoughts and their impact on my mental health, and form new beliefs that illuminate the positive aspect and quiet the negative thoughts.
The caregiving journey has changed my life, and my own experiences have made me that much more present and empathetic to the people I work with. When people trust me enough to share their experiences of caregiver guilt and burnout, I offer support and resources accompanied by an assurance that I understand their plight based on my own lived experience.
You may not always be able to prevent guilt about the intersection of your caregiving responsibilities and your personal and professional life. It’s ok to fail sometimes. I had to remember that, and I want you to remember that, too. But leaning into these restorative practices –and showing yourself some grace – can make all the difference.

Just Do It! Sarting Your Own Business
Rhonda Hight
Many of us dream of turning our passions, hobbies, or skills into a business enterprise. For numerous reasons, many people only dream about entrepreneurship, and never put a plan of action into action. Understandably, there are considerations for someone wishing to enter the world of entrepreneurship that may prevent them from taking that step. For some people it is financial, they are not able to go without a bimonthly direct deposit, or need the medical benefits provided by their employer. Others are afraid of failure or lack the self-motivation to go after their dreams.
There is no judgement about these circumstances, in fact it is wise not to make this leap of faith without considering the feasibility of success, and the impact it could have on your life overall. Entrepreneurship is not for everyone.
This year marked the 30th anniversary of my company and let’s just say I have learned a few things about being self-employed. The following is just one of the lessons learned that may help you decide if the time is right to “Just Do It”!
Make sure this is really what you want. It takes a certain type of mindset and level of resiliency to survive the rollercoaster ride that accompanies entrepreneurship. To determine this, ask yourself the following questions:
WHY do I want to do this? Knowing your “Why” is imperative to creating a blueprint that works for you. We have all heard the axiom about the importance of knowing your destination. However, with entrepreneurship, knowing YOUR WHY is most important. You may not know the final destination initially, however without knowing WHY you want to do this, you will be lost, and the probability for failure increases.
Do I have the self-discipline and energy to navigate this journey? The road to successful entrepreneurship requires an abundance of time and energy. Atraditional 9am-5pm workday is not the norm. It requires getting up and putting in the work even when you do not feel like it and could easily stay in bed watching old reruns of your favorite TV show. It requires a tough skin and an understanding that a “No” is not always a rejection of you personally; it is just a part of doing business.
CHIC SAVANT 21
freepick
Are you willing to be flexible and open to where this journey leads? When I began my business, my goal was to become a worldrenowned speaker. However, after establishing my company, most of the requests I received [for paid work] were for training delivery, facilitation, and human resources consulting. I could have stuck to my guns and continued to chase my dream of being a female Les Brown. Fortunately, I was flexible and leaned into the direction that my business was taking. Agility is a core competency for successful entrepreneurship.
Do I have a support system in place? It truly takes a village. Do you have enough savings to cover at least 3-6 months’ worth of bills, a good tax accountant or CPA, a contract attorney, supportive family members and friends? When making the decision to Just Do It, you must take a helicopter view of your life. What is my current financial situation? How long can I go without receiving income from my business? What other roles and responsibilities do I have (familial or otherwise) that I will have to manage as I build this business? Do I have a network that I can call on for resources, support, or connections?
The answers to these questions are critical and can make the difference between success and failure. Be brutally honest with yourself. Do not give the responses you think you should give, but answers that represent your truth. The insights you will glean from honest answers to these questions will identify your strengths as an entrepreneur, and the gaps you will need to fill for your business to succeed.
The answers will help ensure that you choose a business model that aligns with not only your passions, talents, and skills, but also your life. They will help you identify the resources you already have, and those you will need to acquire.
After an honest self-assessment, if you feel that you know your “Why”; that you have the selfmotivation and energy needed; that you are flexible and open to where the journey takes you; and you have a support system that will hold you up, and hold you down on your journey…Just Do It!

A Journey With Erisa: Unleashing the Power From Within
by Erisa Martin
Dr. Sandra Wright is one current encouragement. She empowers me to share my gift of writing on this platform so I can help others and shed my insecurities.
When I hear the phrase,” Unleashing the Power from Within,” the initial imagery that comes to mind is of a hero like Superman. As Clark Kent, he is an unassuming journalist working for the Daily Planet. He blends in with the crowd, but when a problem arises he utilizes a phone booth to change his garments and persona emerging with the power to defeat any foe.
From the fictitious life of Superman and the realities of many sung and unsung heroes, we learn that unleashing power isn’t a onetime occurrence but is a power stream from a greater power source. Likewise, a process must be taken to tap into the power available fully. I courageously share the ongoing internal processes that empower me to unleash my power within my mind, body, and soul.
I must first begin by saying that God has utilized HIS SPIRIT and many people who carry his power, to help me in this process. We are often our worst critics, but he strategically placed people in my life who saw my budding potential and gifts that I overlooked because they came naturally to me. He built me up in secret, and publicly with his words and teachable moments I am eternally grateful for the individuals who have poured into my life from birth until now.
The other steps that assisted me in tapping into my power occurred throughout my life but are eloquently labeled in chapters and exercises in a book entitled, “Winning the War in Your Mind, Change Your Thinking, Change Your Life.” By Craig Groeschel. His book is broken up into four parts considered to be the tools to change your thinking.
Part 1: Replacement Principle: Remove the lies, and replace them with the truth.
Part 2:Rewire Principle: Rewire your brain, renew your mind
Part 3:Reframe Principle: Reframe Your Mind, Restore your perspective
Part 4: The Rejoice Principle: Revive Your Soul, Reclaim Your Life
Part 1: The Replacement Principle took me through a “Thought Audit.” It challenged me to contemplate my daily thoughts and ask questions like, “ Are my thoughts building me up or tearing me down? Do I think worried or peaceful thoughts? Do my thoughts cause me to keep people at a distance or help me get closer to others? The two lines of questions are opposites. The author states,
CHIC SAVANT 24
“ I’ve broken down the questions into two categories: defense (protection from the Enemy) and offense ( growth toward God.)”
My hidden insecurities and mental imbalance kept my daily thoughts in the defensive realm. My continuous thought patterns fed a feeling of fear until it became a spirit of fear that rested on me and scoped my thought processes about my success and the safety of myself and my family. I was enticed to invest in the prideful, overwhelming task of trying to control the outcomes of situations out of my control. Although smiling on the outside the internal battle was raging and tearing me up inside. But God.
Medication, therapy, journaling, and attending Bible-based worship services, and classes helped me to unearth some of these hidden insecurities and give them their proper label, lies. I began to cling to and combat the lies with a familiar truth. “ God hasn’t given me the spirit of fear but of love, power, and a sound mind.” 1 Timothy 1:7 The power of freedom unleashed from within was possible once my invisible chains were removed.
Part two: The Rewire Principle started with a familiar scripture as well.
“ Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by renewing your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is his good, pleasing, and perfect will.” Romans 12:2. Having an intentional thought life and arresting my thoughts when they weren’t in line with my truth helped my confidence to emerge from the inside out.
I am no longer living with a victim mentality but a victorious mindset which has made a drastic difference
Being the child of two divorces, the violent dismembering of a family, my biological father feeling he had no place in my life so distancing himself, the recipe for daddy-daughter issues, the mental health diagnosis of Bi-polar and even my insecure feelings about my hair balding on the sides contributed to a why me type of mindset.
In implementing the rewiring principle, I can admit that those situations that God brought me through taught me that he is my stability amid instability, that my parents never stopped loving me in their discord, and that my father’s distance was a coping mechanism for himself that I took personally. God helped me hone in on the importance of acknowledging my mental health challenges and brought me to a community called, “ Healing of the Minds”, where I can empathize and empower others going through some of the places I have gone through. Furthermore, the bald spots I covered for so long are now part of a natural hairstyle that frames my face and speaks of my freedom from what others may think. Moreso it is based on a known truth …I am beautiful from the inside out and must own that to exude and unapologetically unleash the power within, with or without hair on the sides.
The next article will contain the remaining two tools. The Process of revealing the SuperWoman in me continues. Prayerfully you are currently in a place where you are unleashing your power within but if not please take this journey with me.
With Love, Eternally Grateful Erisa

From Solopreneur to Entrepreneur: Navigating the Journey
by Doris Dickerson, EdD
Transitioning from a solopreneur to an entrepreneur is a significant milestone, marking a shift from managing a solo venture to overseeing a growing business. This have been quite a journey for me because it involves a truly profound transformation in mindset, skillset, and strategy. When I was a solopreneur, I was the business; after becoming an entrepreneur, I realized that I have to build and lead this business. Here are a few things I had to realize when I went from solopreneur to entrepreneur:
Understanding the Difference
The first step in transitioning from solopreneur to entrepreneur is understanding the fundamental differences between the two roles. A solopreneur operates independently, often managing every aspect of the business alone. This includes marketing, sales, customer service, and administration. The solopreneur’s focus is often on delivering a specialized service or product, leveraging their expertise.
In contrast, an entrepreneur is someone who moves beyond individual contributions to build a business that can operate and grow independently of their direct involvement. This shift requires a broader vision, the ability to delegate, and a focus on scaling the business.
Developing an Entrepreneurial Mindset
Transitioning to an entrepreneurial mindset involves several key shifts and this is very important:
1. Vision and Goal Setting: As an entrepreneur, you need to envision the future of your business beyond your personal involvement. This involves setting long-term goals, identifying growth opportunities, and planning strategically.
2. Delegation: One of the most challenging transitions for solopreneurs is learning to delegate. Building a team means trusting others to handle aspects of the business, freeing you to focus on strategic growth.
3. Leadership Skills: Effective leadership is crucial for entrepreneurs. This involves inspiring and guiding your team, making informed decisions, and fostering a positive company culture.
4. Risk Management: Entrepreneurs must navigate greater risks and uncertainties. Developing a robust risk management strategy and being adaptable to change are essential.
Building
a Strong Foundation
As you transition, laying a solid foundation for your business is crucial. Here are essential steps:
1. Business Plan: Develop a comprehensive business plan outlining your vision, mission, goals, target market, competitive analysis, and financial projections. This plan will serve as your roadmap.
2. Financial Management: Ensure your financials are in order. This includes setting up proper accounting systems, managing cash flow, and securing funding if necessary.
3. Legal Structure: Choose the appropriate legal structure for your business, such as a corporation or LLC. This decision will impact your taxes, liability, and ability to raise capital.
4. Brand Identity: Establish a strong brand identity that resonates with your target audience. This includes your business name, logo, website, and marketing materials.

Building and Leading a Team
Your team is the backbone of your growing business. Effective recruitment, training, and leadership are critical to success:
1. Hiring the Right People: Identify the skills and qualities you need in your team members. Hire individuals who complement your strengths and bring diverse perspectives. You don’t have to hire a lot of people, but make sure they are the right fit.
2. Training and Development: Invest in training and development programs to ensure your team has the skills and knowledge to perform effectively. Continuous learning should be part of your company culture.
3. Creating a Positive Culture: Foster a positive and inclusive work environment. Encourage collaboration, innovation, and open communication. Recognize and reward your team’s contributions.
4. Delegating Effectively: Delegate tasks and responsibilities based on your team’s strengths. Empower your team members to take ownership of their roles, which will enhance their engagement and productivity.
Scaling Your Business
Scaling your business involves expanding operations and increasing revenue while maintaining quality and efficiency:
1. Systems and Processes: Implement scalable systems and processes to streamline operations. Automation and technology can play a significant role in managing growth.
2. Marketing and Sales: Develop a robust marketing and sales strategy to attract new customers and retain existing ones.
3. Customer Experience: Focus on delivering exceptional customer experiences. Happy customers are more likely to become repeat clients and refer others to your business.
4. Innovation: Stay ahead of the competition by continually innovating. This could involve introducing new products or services, exploring new markets, or adopting new technologies.
Overcoming Challenges
The journey from solopreneur to entrepreneur is not without challenges. Common obstacles include:
1. Letting Go of Control: Learning to trust your team and let go of control can be difficult. Remember, delegation is key to scaling your business.
2. Managing Growth: Rapid growth can strain your resources. Plan for growth by ensuring you have the necessary infrastructure, funding, and talent.
3. Maintaining Work-Life Balance: As your business grows, maintaining a work-life balance can be challenging. Prioritize self-care and delegate tasks to avoid burnout.
4. Adapting to Change: The business landscape is constantly evolving. Stay adaptable and be prepared to pivot when necessary.
Transitioning from solopreneur to entrepreneur is a rewarding journey that requires vision, strategy, and leadership. By developing an entrepreneurial mindset, building a strong foundation, leading a capable team, scaling effectively, and overcoming challenges, you can successfully navigate this transformation. Embrace the journey with confidence and determination, and you'll be well on your way to building a thriving business.

Taking Back My Life
By Dr. Sandra Wright
Life often has a way of pulling us into a whirlwind of commitments, responsibilities, and routines that can leave us feeling detached from our own sense of purpose and well-being. This was my reality not too long ago. Despite my professional success and the outward appearance of a fulfilling life, I felt a gnawing disconnect. The journey of reclaiming my life was not an overnight transformation but a deliberate and introspective process that reignited my passion, redefined my priorities, and restored my sense of self.
The first step in taking back my life was acknowledging that I needed a change. For a long time, I had been running on autopilot, juggling the demands of my business, and personal responsibilities. While I took pride in my work, especially in training administrative professionals to achieve their potential, I realized that my own growth had stalled. The moment of epiphany came during a quiet weekend when I allowed myself the rare luxury of introspection. I asked myself fundamental questions: Am I truly happy? What do I need to feel fulfilled?
With these questions as my guide, I embarked on a journey of self-discovery. One of the first actions I took was to reassess my daily routine. I started by prioritizing self-care, something I had neglected for far too long. This meant establishing a morning routine that nourished my body and mind: a brisk walk in the fresh morning air, followed by meditation and a healthy breakfast. These simple changes set a positive tone for the day, helping me approach my tasks with renewed energy and focus. In addition to self-care, I sought to rekindle my creative spirit. As someone who enjoys writing short screenplays, I found that creative expression was a powerful outlet for my emotions and ideas. I carved out dedicated time each week to work on my screenplays, allowing myself to dive into fictional worlds where I could explore different aspects of human experience. This creative pursuit not only provided a sense of accomplishment but also served as a reminder of my multifaceted identity beyond my professional role.
Another significant step in taking back my life was setting boundaries. As a master trainer and motivational speaker, my schedule was often packed with engagements and commitments. I learned the importance of saying no to tasks and projects that did not align with my core values or personal goals. This was not an easy lesson, as I had always equated productivity with worthiness. However, setting boundaries allowed me to protect my time and energy, ensuring that I could give my best to the things that truly mattered.
Throughout this journey, the support of my loved ones was invaluable. I opened up to my family and friends about my struggles and aspirations, allowing them to understand my need for change. Their encouragement and understanding provided a solid foundation as I navigated this transformative period.

Taking Back My Life (cont’d)
By Dr. Sandra Wright
Taking back my life also involved continuous learning and growth. I committed to personal development by attending workshops, reading books, and seeking mentorship. These experiences broadened my perspective and equipped me with new tools to tackle challenges. Moreover, they reinforced the belief that taking care of myself was not a one-time event but an ongoing journey. In hindsight, reclaiming my life was about realigning with my true self and embracing a holistic approach to well-being. It required courage, introspection, and a willingness to make changes. Today, I feel more balanced, fulfilled, and connected to my purpose than ever before.
By prioritizing self-care, creative expression, boundary-setting, and continuous growth, I have not only taken back my life but also laid the groundwork for a more vibrant and meaningful future.

Transitioning from Oversight to Action: Empowering Parents to Support Children with Special Needs in Education
The journey of parenting a child with special needs is one filled with unique challenges and profound rewards. As we navigate through this terrain, it becomes abundantly clear that parental involvement is not just important it's essential. We find ourselves wearing multiple hats, playing various roles that extend far beyond the traditional notions of caregiving.
In this odyssey, we discover that advocacy is not merely a choice; it's a calling. As parents, we stand as unwavering champions for our children's rights and inclusion in every aspect of life, particularly within the education system. We refuse to accept anything less than the best for our children, and we're determined to break down barriers that hinder their progress.
But advocacy is just the tip of the iceberg. We also find ourselves serving as educators, tailoring learning experiences to suit our children's unique strengths, interests, and learning styles. We become collaborators, working hand in hand with professionals to craft personalized plans that address our children's individual needs effectively. Yet, our roles extend even further. We are mentors, guiding our children through life's twists and turns, serving as beacons of strength and wisdom. We are caregivers, providing not only for our children's physical needs but also for their emotional wellbeing. And we are coordinators, orchestrating the intricate dance of medical appointments, therapy sessions, and educational services to ensure a holistic approach to their care.
But despite our best efforts, we encounter obstacles along the way. Misunderstanding and lack of awareness often stand in the path of progress, delaying the support our children desperately need. Cultural beliefs and societal stigmas can cast shadows of doubt and shame, leaving us feeling isolated and alone.
And then there's the toll it takes on us, the caregivers. The stress, the burnout, the exhaustion it's all too real. We find ourselves stretched thin, juggling the demands of caregiving with the pressures of everyday life. But through it all, we persevere, fueled by an unyielding love for our children and an unwavering commitment to their well-being So, where do we go from here? How do we bridge the gap between oversight and action, between intention and impact? The answer lies in community in coming together to share our stories, our struggles, and our successes. It lies in education in raising awareness and promoting understanding of special needs and disabilities. And it lies in advocacy in standing up, speaking out, and demanding change.
As we embark on this journey together, let us be guided by a spirit of compassion, empathy, and resilience. Let us remember that our voices have power, and that together, we can move mountains. And let us never forget the profound impact we have on the lives of our children, whose potential knows no bounds.
In the end, it's not about the challenges we face or the obstacles we overcome. It's about the love we share, the lessons we learn, and the legacy we leave behind. So let us rise to the occasion, knowing that with faith, hope, and perseverance, anything is possible. And let us never underestimate the power of a parent's love, for it has the ability to change the world.

Out With the old, In With the…Better!
by Elizabeth Moliter
“Your old work isn’t better than your new work. And your new work isn’t better than your old. To assume there was a golden period and you’re past it is only true if you accept that premise. Putting your best effort in at each moment, in each chapter, is all we can ever hope to accomplish.” – Rick Rubin, The Creative Act
As we embark on a new year, I have been contemplating the phrase “out with the old, in with the new.” What does “newness” really mean in the context of living our best, most productive and satisfying lives? This brings out the question, “Is new always better?”
Let’s dig a bit deeper into these questions and maybe ask a few more!
First, is there value in exploring another kind of “new” that actually treasures the old, the learned, the regretted, the mistaken, and reshapes them into a different “new” that is at once powerful and even proud of the story we’ve already lived? A new that is ready to move into the future with determination, expectation, and promise? Yes, from my perspective, there is.
From a wide lens view, the story of our lives appears to be written as a nonfiction account of who we are as revealed by what we’ve done, with all the ebbs and flows of each passing year forming the narrative. As we’ve been told, we are the hero of our story, but we limit the progress we make when we decide that this must imply that there is an apex to our lives – a point at which the story’s climax plays out and we become our best selves, and then begin to decline or to leave the best part of our life story behind. Instead, why not mentally join the preceding years with the current and ensuing years in a way that can engage us to stimulate better stories, adventures, and improve our overall lives, the older we get.
CHIC SAVANT 36
I embarked on a career in the business world and started a folk-rock band on the side which gave (and still gives) me joy. My professional career took off and I ultimately landed a leadership role in a non-profit organization. I also went back to school to earn a Master’s Degree in my 50s! It’s never too late!
And, yet, with these successes, I still always saw myself as something of a failure because I had not achieved my original “dream.”
It took some time to work through this nagging regret, but I ultimately realized that who I have become – and am still becoming – because of those earlier challenges and even the failures, has made me the woman I am today. Not just stronger because of adversity, but also more authentic and empathetic. I can relate more directly to others' challenges because of my own.
These past, present, and future experiences are forming a “new”and BETTER person – not held back by the past or daunted by the future but liberated by it. They serve as a springboard for my songwriting, a guide for my work as a coach and mentor, and as an anchor in my relationships.
I hope these ideas inspire you to enter the new year with gratitude and acceptance of the past, joy in the present, and expectation for the future!

Women’s History Year-round!
By Sandra Wright, PhD
Women have contributed and accomplished so much but have been overlooked and consequently omitted from mainstream culture. In March, as we salute so many awesome women can help fill that void.
As Harriet Beecher Stowe said, “Women are the real architects of society”.
We honor such women as the prominent historical figure, Harriet Tubman. There have been many discussions and documentaries on this woman. Tubman was originally born Araminta Ross in Dorchester County, Maryland sometime in 1822. After subsequently escaping to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in her late twenties and frequenting a few other locations following that, she always remained true to her roots. Tubman is most recognizable for her acts of securing justice for many enslaved by freeing over 70 enslaved individuals as a conductor on the Underground Railroad, and a hefty 700 more at the Combahee River Raid as a Union spy.
Then there is Dr. Ellen Ochoa the first female Hispanic astronaut. Over the course of four NASA flights, she logged more than 970 hours in space. In 2012, Ochoa was named the 11th director of the Johnson Space Center making her the first Hispanic and the second woman to serve in this position. She has also been recognized with NASA’s Distinguished Service Medal, Exceptional Service Medal, and Outstanding Leadership Medal.
There are so many women architects in our society. However, here are a few of these daring women who made their mark in society:
Nellie Bly (1864-1922) In 1886, 22-year-old Nelly Bly (born Elizabeth Cochrane New York City from Pennsylvania. Bly had gotten her start as a journalist when she penned an open letter to the editor of the Pittsburgh Dispatch which pointed out the paper’s negative representation of women. The editor not only read Bly’s response, he printed her rebuttal, and offered Bly a job as columnist
As a newspaper writer, she took the pen name Nellie Bly. Although, Bly was a popular columnist she was often asked to write pieces that only addressed women.
Ruby Bridges (1954- ) Ruby Bridges birth in 1954 coincided with the US Supreme Court’s landmark ruling in Brown v. the Board of Education of Topeka Kansas, which ended racial segregation in public schools. Nonetheless, southern states continued to resist integration, and in 1959, Ruby attended a segregated New Orleans kindergarten. A year later, however, a federal court ordered Louisiana to desegregate. The school district created entrance exams for African American students to see whether they could compete academically at the all-white school. Ruby and five other students passed the exam.
Dolores Huerta (1930-) was greatly influenced by her mother’s community activism and compassionate treatment of workers. She also experienced extreme discrimination that helped shape her view of the world. A schoolteacher, prejudiced against Hispanics, accused Huerta of cheating because her papers were too well-written. In 1945 at the end of World War II, white men brutally beat her brother for wearing a Zoot-Suit, a popular Latino fashion. These experiences as a child led her to want to help others experiencing the same discrimination. Huerta briefly taught school in the 1950s but seeing so many hungry farm children coming to school, she thought she could do more to help them by organizing farmers and farm workers.
