Woodend Community Association Update ! PLEASE COME AND JOIN US ! Woodend Community Association was set up to promote and support initiatives to advance safety, wellbeing and community spirit in the Woodend Community. We provide members with opportunities to express ideas and concerns and raise awareness of developments which affect the Woodend area. By paying a $5.00 household membership you have direct input into the Woodend Community Association’s objectives to enhance our community. The more members we have the better we can strive to enhance our community. Please email Woodend.Community.Association@gmail.com for membership information. WOODEND COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION COMMITTEE - TREASURER Woodend Community Association Committee (“WCAC”) are looking for a community resident to take on the role of Treasurer. If this a role that sounds like you then please contact us by email. WOODEND TO WOODEND BEACH WALKWAY/CYCLEWAY We were very fortunate to have received the early Christmas gift of $30,000 from the Lotteries Community Facilities Fund. Along with this and the fantastic funding we received last year the Woodend Beach shared walk/cycleway project is due to resume work on the Sandhill Road bend to remove a part of the sand hill and putting in gabion baskets as a retaining wall. This will ensure a safer pathway for the public down Woodend Beach Road. The work has started and is due to be completed by the end of next week. Please see below for pictures. The work on the “S” bends on Woodend Beach Road will start by the

Page 4 THE WOODPECKER FEBRUARY 2017

second week of February. There will be temporary traffic management in place during the works with the work generally being carried out under a “shoulder closed” operation. There will, however, be two locations where traffic lanes will be reduced to a single lane with temporary traffic lights operating for the duration of the work. It is only with the help of our generous funding providers and our community members that we have been able to continue the work on this community project so many thanks for the continued support. We would like to take this opportunity to say a special thank you to Waimakariri District Council for their allocated council contribution to the project of $50,000 and to Paws Vets for their substantial donation of $1000 to the project. We also acknowledge the donation of services and materials from Taggart Earthmoving to the value of $800 and from Road Metals Co Ltd of $600.

If you would like to make a donation or offer your time, skills or expertise we are keen for additional hands on this project to make it come to fruition sooner. Please contact us by email for details on how to donate or to offer your time. Are you stuck for what to buy your loved ones this year?? Why not “Buy a Metre” of the shared cycle/walkway – for just $50 your loved ones will know that they are part of the legacy of this great asset for the local community. Get in touch with Mark Paterson on 0275 349 112 to organise your “Buy a Metre”. All contributions are acknowledged in the Woodpecker (see below for the list). Below is the list of people who have donated to the walkway to date. WCA would like to extend our sincere thanks for your support! Barnett Family

Woodend Combined Club The months of December and January are when the Club holds its Christmas Lunch and Summer Picnic. The Christmas Lunch venue this year was a return visit to the Plough Hotel in Rangiora where 84 of our members were again looked after superbly by Amy, Mike and the team. The Summer Picnic was held at the home of Club President Sandra and her husband Mike. (Pictured Right, Good Food & Yarns at the Summer Picnic) Rain in the morning gave some anxiety but it managed to stay dry for a few hours while some 30 club members enjoyed the wide variety of lovely food dishes they brought to share. January’s coffee morning was at the recently opened Columbus Coffee Café in Rangiora – 18 members enjoying coffee, mixed scones and a good chat.

Woodend Garden Club

Our monthly meeting on 16th January was a car pool trip to Mona Vale Gardens. After having our picnic lunch, sitting on rugs or picnic chairs, indulging in the odd glass of wine [for some], we wandered around on the manicured lawns enjoying the peace & tranquillity. The rose garden was a picture, lots of lilies on the lily pond too. Our next meeting is on 16th February at 1.30pm in our community centre, our chosen subject being 2 of our members, Shirley Wheeler & Val Cotton showing us their take on Floral Art. As always, new members most welcome, just come along to our meeting or phone our president, Rae Miller, 03 3100202, or our secretary Joy Collins, 03 3235258.

From our Mayor David Ayers

Tsunami Warnings

The Hurunui-Kaikōura earthquake sequence late last year taught us a lot and also gave us a lot to think about.

Firstly, it widened the range of possible causes of tsunami along the east coast of the South Island. The initial quake occurred well inland but it then triggered a range of shocks up the Kaikōura coast towards Wellington, which caused a change in the assessment of tsunami risk during the night. It turned out that there was a small tsunami which fortunately had no discernible impact on our coastline. Nevertheless, it gave us a dry run on what

might happen in a more serious event, especially one in the middle of the night. The District has tsunami warning alarms in place in the three beach settlements as the most obviously vulnerable areas. They have been tested and we have found that some people hear them and others don’t so they will also have to be backed up by people rousing their neighbours and the Police and others doing checks. What we didn’t expect was that on a still night, people in places like Woodend and Kaiapoi (and Linwood!) would also hear them and react accordingly. Three welfare centres were opened that night, at the Rangiora Baptist Church, the Woodend Community Centre and the Kaiapoi Rugby Club. Most people who evacuated that night probably didn’t need these centres, although they were three places where there were toilets open. That proved to be a problem in Rangiora where many people went and it is an issue we will have to address. One relevant piece of information that many will find helpful is just how high above sea level their house and other parts of the District are. There is a considerable slope on the Canterbury Plains, and Rangiora, for instance, is beyond the reach of any tsunami. Those who went to Oxford certainly didn’t need to go that far. So there are these things, and more, to think about. As it happened, the evacuation of our beach settlements was a wise move, and the occasion provided all of us which information that we wouldn’t have otherwise got and which we can learn from.

Principal for a day Principal Miss Paterson and DP Miss Messervy took over from students Graeme and Adrienne through being winners of their annual speech competition. Be warned, there were changes a plenty and many surprises during the day. The day started of with the Principals setting themselves up in the office complete with cups of milo, the lolly jar and laptops to work on. Through out the day they worked on computers, received phone calls, ate lollies, met with teachers, held a restorative meeting, supervised community service ate some more lollies and introduced new students to Rimu and Matai. By the time this Woodpecker is published the floor for our new learning block will be poured. We do thank our neighbour’s for their support and understanding during the build programme. Happy New Year and welcome back to the 2017 school year. Once again thanks to all parents, staff and community members who as the local ‘village’ work together to raise our tamariki. We are so lucky that so many people (students, parents, staff and community members) give so much to learning and teaching. The feedback we get identifies the school as leading the way in; • Supporting diverse student achievement • Being up to date with education research • Having and contributing our experience across the school sector • Taking a considered approach to resolving any relationship issues or problems if they arise • Being responsive to the many forms of diversity within our school and the community • Establishing clarity of roles, responsibilities and accountabilities within our teams • Demonstrating a keenness to disrupt current practice where that would be useful, in a way that is collaborative and professionally appropriate We witness every day students and staff connected to their school, removing barriers to learning, caring for each other and causing learning. Our students remain connected and continue to achieve right through to year 8 something that the MOE states is not happening across all schools. Please join with us in being proud of the ‘Culture’ we have all contributed to at Woodend.

THANK YOU FROM THE WAIMAKARIRI DISTRICT COUNCIL AND WIDER WAIMAKARIRI COMMUNITY: We recently received a congratulatory letter from the Council thanking the school community for their considerable contribution to the earthquake recovery effort. The considerable efforts from staff, families and community over the past weeks did not go unnoticed - once again kind thanks to all for the food / clothing donations, the drivers of the school van - the list goes on!! Comments taken from the letter: “The feedback we received from the guests who passed through the Woodend Welfare Centre, as well as from the various representatives of foreign governments who visited, was extremely positive. The appreciation of the warmness of the welcome they received, and the level of assistance provided, was clear. The situation they found themselves in was not their making, but they left Waimakariri with a positive memory of the time they spent with our community. And you all played a big part in that - Thank you again you did our community proud “

STUDENT LEADER CAMP 2017 “We rise by lifting others” The 2017 Student Leaders have been on their leadership camp and are excited to jump in and get started in their roles, pictured right. This was our second student leader camp and was definitely a memorable one! The camp was planned to be in Reefton at the Neylon family farm but due to terrible weather on the Coast, it meant that the camp got moved to Hanmer at the last minute! The leaders left on Monday with Mrs Watson and Mrs Neylon to Hanmer and stayed at Hanmer Forest Camp. They participated in lots of team building activities and learned how to be the best leaders they can be along with the meaning of the quote, “we rise by lifting others”. There was a lot of laughter and all sorts of adventures along the way.

We are excited to see how they use the skills they learned at camp in their roles this year! A HUGE thanks to Hanmer Forest Camp and Alpine Crazy Putt & Village Cruisers for accommodating us at the last minute and also to WSSPA for helping fund our camp.

Local children’s art class teacher publishes A Southern Tale Woodend resident Joanne McDougall has published a children’s book, “A Southern Tale.” Mostly set underwater, it is essentially a chase, as an endangered NZ sea lion tries to catch her dinner. It also features penguins, a fearsome shark and other aquatic animals. Though the fish, shark and dolphins are just generic and designed to be recognisable to children, the other animals are species specific and their conservation status is listed in the back of the book. It demonstrates the food chain in a fun way, which McDougall says was entirely accidental. You can take a look inside the book by visiting McDougall’s website; www.pegasusart.co.nz. A Southern Tale is stocked locally at the following locations: Framemakers, Woodend Paper Plus, Rangiora Id Gallery, Brick Mill, Waikuku Paperplus, Merivale Scorpio Books, Christchurch The story was inspired by time spent

THE WOODPECKER FEBRUARY 2017

manning weather stations in the subAntarctic, where the proximity of sea lions, their curiosity and adventurous spirits provided both amusement and difficulties. They were recently put on the endangered list. The massive Rockhopper colonies are now in decline, and the many Albatross species that breed on the islands are also under threat. McDougall has run children’s art classes from her home studio in Woodend for many years. A number of her students were accepted by ToiToi magazine last year, and have had their own illustrations published. ToiToi is both written and illustrated by primary school children.

This Month with Harry Over Xmas I had an enquiry from a young fan regarding who Hewitts Road was named after. The following is near enough to a reprint of what was written in the March, 1996 ‘Woodpecker. Which will no doubt make a change from my ranting and raving about the half-witted suggestions for street names in the new Ravenswood sub-division. Named after Daniel Hewitt and family who arrived in Woodend in 1874. Born in Lighthorne in Warwickshire Daniel held several positions including gentlemans servant, groom, coachman, gardener and farm labourer. In 1872 what was to become known as the “Revolt of the Fields” occured in southern England. Led by Joseph Arch, a Warwickshire hedgecutter, this was basically a conflict between farmers and the labourers rebelling against low wages and poor working conditions. This led to the formation of the National Agricultural Labourers Union, with Arch elected as the first president. For a while the lot of the labourer improved but falling farm prices, resulting in lockouts and layoffs and a change of government, this proved to be short lived. Desperate for farm labour, the New Zealand immigration authorities began courting the union. In November, 1873, Christopher Holloway, a widely known and respected unionist, was appointed to make up a party of at least 200 agricultural labourers and their families to be ready to sail from Plymouth on the 15th of December. Despite the short notice, with offers of a free passage, a small graturity and glowing reports of conditions in New Zealand, the 200 were soon recruited. A special train was arranged to travel from Leamington Spa to Plymouth picking up the emigrants on the way. One such to join Page 24

THE WOODPECKER FEBRUARY 2017

the train was Daniel Hewitt, wife Gwyneth and eight children. Holloways’ party, after a couple of days in the depot at Plymouth was to be divided between the ‘Mongol’ a new dual sail and steamship, and the sailing ship ‘Scimitar’. However heavy fog and engine repairs to the ‘Mongol’ resulted in both ships arriving in Plymouth a week later than the immigrants. Conditions at the depot were far from ideal with dampness resulting in illness etc. After a few days at sea, despite the best attempts by the ships surgeon, it became apparent that measles and scarlett fever had been bought on board. By the time the ‘Mongol’ reached Dunedin, 15 children including ten year old Emily Hewitt and one adult had died. To add to the misery it was found that the decks on the ‘Mongol’ had not been adequately caulked which resulted in damp bedding and the provisions were far from satisfactory for the children and the sick. No landfalls were made during the voyage as the captain feared he would lose passengers and crew. He also seemed hell-bent on making a record run to New Zealand in his new boat. In order to conserve coal he delayed the use of the water condenser by reducing the emigrants daily allowance only sanctioning it’s use when the tanks were dry. He achieved the record of 51 days. The ‘Scimitar’ also made a record run of 71 days. Due to the large number of deaths,a Royal commision enquiry was held into both voyages. Findings from these were used to set standards for later emmigration voyages. After 6 months in the Dunedin area the Hewitts moved to Woodend, first to a house about opposite the school before moving to a cob cottage on the east side of the main road about where Hewitts

cost $99 which was also a bit of a stretch and proceeded with the paperwork that accompanies large financial outlays. It was here that the smoothness of transaction suddenly deteriorated. I explained that I wished for the billing side for any operation of my new purchase to be charged to my present account as had been the case with the last machine. She tapped my name into her computer and gazed at the screen. She tried again. On the third try she When people asked me to reaffirm my name complain about which I assured her had not changed in the last few my phone not been minutes and punched it in being turned on again. I am sorry sir but we I explain that it is don’t have an account under your name. No, I replied , the for my benefit bill comes to me under my and if I wish to fathers name. In that case sir, under the privacy act we will speak to them need written permission from him regarding your purchase I shall ring. and his account.

Road now joins. In 1882 Daniel owned 8 acres on which he built a larger house to accommodate his large family, By 1900 he was farming 100 acres. Daniel was active in the Methodist church and a member of the school committee. Mrs Hewitt became a matriarchal figure in the village. It was a Woodend tradition that any baby born in the village had to be taken for an “audience” with her.

Just prior to Xmas I had the occasion of buying a new cell phone. This was due to my losing the previous machine, a small flip top affair that warned me with a rendition of a bit of Mozarts Sull aria that someone wished to communicate with me. Being culturally advanced I am into classical music. That is if I had it turned on. When people complain about my phone not being turned on I explain that it is for my benefit and if I wish to speak to them I shall ring. So I went to the usual phone shop. I explained to the lass that I wished to buy a simple little phone that didn’t cost to much as I was on a pension and struggled a bit on the financial side. All I wanted was a device I could talk to other people. It didn’t need to be able to take photos, peel onions, perform colonoscopies, explain the theory of relativity, drown kittens, confirm pregnancies or prune roses. In short all I wanted was something akin to the original that Alex Bell invented ie a piece of machinery that after pressing a few buttons someone would say “hullo”.

I am sorry love but he’s dead. Seriously. Well I hope he’s dead because we buried him. And knowing my old Dad if he wasn’t he will be pretty cheesed off about it by now. And I am certainly not going to upgrade to one of your expensive devices that can communicate with the dead just so you can check with him if it is alright for me to have new phone. It was here that a bit of a hiatus set in. Perhaps sir if you bought his death certificate in we may be able to do something. Look love it is only a phone I am trying to buy. What about I bring a shovel in and you pop down to the Woodend Anglican cemetery and check for yourself he is in a state of demise.

It was here that I received the 1st knockback. Says she “I am sorry sir, they no longer make flip tops”. “Oh bugger then what do we have instead” says I. We settled on a small flat device that

I left the shop phoneless. I entered another phone shop and exited clutching a new flip top device complete with my original number upon it. J.H. THE WOODPECKER FEBRUARY 2017

Having beaten the Papanui club in the semi final, they then played New Brighton in the final. A slow start saw Woodend 6-2 down but that wasn’t for long, edging their way shot by shot then drawing level. From that point onwards they managed to hold the lead winning 11-9. Some excellent bowls were played by both teams. Woodend team (pictured) of lead, Jack Dzenis, Neil Tiplady and Alex Wyllie skip. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

GIVE A LITTLE

My wife Lisa and I were really looking forward to flying to Whangarei and then driving to Kerikeri to meet up with friends They had recently shifted from Christchurch to ‘settle in’ to their new found freedom of ‘NO CHILDREN AT HOME’! Glen is a whizz in the kitchen and so together with his wife Gorretti, they were setting up a mobile coffee and food trailer. When we arrived mid afternoon, Gorretti was having a sleep. Well and good as the weather up there is much warmer than it had been here! However, over the next few days Gorretti was just not looking good, not eating and had no energy. She decided to go and see a doctor who would do more than just prescribe pills. A week after we got back my wife received this text. “Well the panel of specialists in Akld wanted me to have a biopsy at Whangarei Hosp to identify what kind of cancer cell I have and how advanced it is. Which I did on Tues. Surgeon called me with results yesterday. They categorise cancer cells into 2 groups. Small cell cancer & large cell cancer. I have small cell cancer which is the most aggressive cancer. It quickly and thoroughly spreads through the body. And so it has...cancer now in my adrenal glands, liver, lymph nodes and lungs so far.” The result has been an advanced terminal cancer diagnosis that is now also in her brain & pancreas. She is having chemotherapy so that it MAY give her another 6-12months of life, and is also having radiation on her brain cancer. Her husband Glen at the same time has been diagnosed with a lumbar problem that requires surgery. He is unable to work or support his wife as he is not eligible for Page 28

ACC due to having had the same operation previously. All this for someone who is not even 60! If you have ever received a text or phone call like this then you know how devastating cancer can be. How do you cope with the feeling of powerlessness as your loved one suffers through many tests, then invasive treatments, along with heartbreaking end of life decisions. Give a little offers us an opportunity to help. To all who know and love someone who is terminally ill or anyone who wishes, please feel free to look at Gorrettis month on this website page. https://givealittle. co.nz/cause/gorettismonth Geoff Todd DONATOR LIST I find it appalling the Woodend Community Association think it necessary to frequently publish the list of donators to the Woodend to Woodend Beach Walkway/ Cycleway. For starters I believe the Waimakariri District Council should be funding this, (but that’s another letter) unfortunately this is not the case and the money is having to be raised publicly from mum and dad locals. I do not believe bullying is a good way to raise funds. This is how I see publishing this list frequently, bullying people into feeling bad for not contributing, like their neighbours or fellow businesses. Acknowledge the donators at time of donation, but to continually publish the entire list and make people feel bad, or bully them into making donations, wrong. Shame. Most people who donate do not do it for the public recognition. Warren Dixon

IT’’S EASIER THAN YOU THINK! Seen a pothole, vandalism, broken tree, grafitti or other issue that has got you grumbling? Don’t just grumble…do something!. It may come as a surprise to some of you that Planet Facebook is not a cureall, nor is your page being monitored by Council staff so that they can identify what is troubling you and get it fixed. I have seen many examples of people who put considerable time and effort into airing their grumbles on FB or over the fence to the neighbour or down at the local café. So, I’ve decided it is time to put you out of your misery by letting you know that if you really do want action from the Council, you first have to let them know what the issue is. Sounds simple; is simple!

E L B M U R G DO SOMETHING! I’m not saying you will always get what you want, but if you don’t even bother to address your concerns in the right direction, then it is pretty much guaranteed that you will continue to be disappointed by whatever is bugging you. So, that said, below are some options… now, don’t say you haven’t been told…and don’t leave it to someone else … Kindest Regards Penny Swerth
