Editor’s Note
Welcome to the first official day of winter! Welcome to the 1st day of July! The start of the second half of the year already!! How on earth did that happen? And of course we had our shortest day, so from now on the days will start getting longer, what a great feeling.
This month I have once again promoted our Woodpecker Community & Volunteer Evening + AGM on 22 July at 6pm at Woodend Community Centre on our front page and on Page 3.
We’ve had a good response so far, however, please do consider coming along; whether you are a current or former advertiser, reader, community contributor, or deliverer, we’d love to have you be part of our evening. Please don’t forget to RSVP for catering purposes.
As also mentioned briefly in my editor report last month, this month starts my 8th year as Editor with The Woodpecker Community Trust. I can hardly believe where the time has gone. Whilst it seems ages ago, I can still recall the nervousness I experienced using the Apple InDesign software and the anxiety and pressure
of completing something within a short space of time and using software I wasn’t familiar with or trained in. After about six months, I started to find my groove and understand the software which made it an enjoyable process rather than stressful.
I am still amazed every month with all the wonderful contributions I receive from everyone, whether it’s paid advertising or community contributions, and somehow it seems to balance out each month with 50% from each providing a balanced read. And finally, I’ve added another post for ‘deliverers wanted’; it’s always to helpful to have back-ups for those leaving, away or unwell, so if you have an hour or so a month and would like to be part of a great cause and get some exercise in the bargain, please do email me.
Otherwise, enjoy the read and hopefully more than one person will find my smartly hidden Mr Woody Woodpecker this month!

St Barnabas Church
It is no great mystery that churches have been in decline in the western world for about 50 years. However, some churches, including ours are reversing the trend. Over the past few months several people from the community have commented about the volume of cars in our church parking lot throughout the week and especially on Sunday morning and are wondering what is going on!!!!
facility we have to connect with Jesus in Prayer and to connect with others.
As a local parish priest, it truly is a great problem to have when you begin running out of parking spaces and chairs in the chapel to cope with the volume of people.
There is one way to cure your curiosity; pop in and say hi. You would be most welcome. I really do thank God for people of our area using the humble
I want to extend a personal welcome to every single person in the community young and old religious and non-religious to join us for any of our daily services that we have at St. Barnabas Church. You are all truly welcome. In fact, you already belong.

North Canterbury Woodcraft Club - Latest News
May had been a busy month for the North Canterbury Woodcraft Club. Towards the end of the month, we had our AGM with the election of a new Committee. President Noel Graham stood down after 15 years in the role - truly an outstanding effort considering he also comes out to the Club every Wednesday afternoon to voluntarily run the Wednesday Club day.
Also retiring from his important role as Secretary was Merv Laws although both Noel and Merv will continue on the Committee. Howard Pettigrew was elected as the new President with long serving member Paul Wanty continuing in his role as Secretary. Viv Milne was elected as Treasurer.
In addition to running the Clubs days, every second Wednesday in the month Noel runs the National Association of Woodturnerʻs (NAW) course - a three year nationally accredited course which takes turners from the very start of turning right through to advanced techniques. He is ably assisted in this by Merv Laws. The curriculum exposes participants to a wide variety of turning styles and methods, including the use of a variety of different media combined with wood (metal, acrylics, etc) experimenting with colouring of wood using dyes, which when applied to spinning platters or dishes mounted in the lathe, produces stunning results. After being exposed to such a variety of techniques and styles of turning, members often decide that one particular aspect really appeals to them, like Bob B who found that making wooden pens really appealed to him.
We have also been thrilled to welcome many new members to the Club over the last few weeks and they have been very keen and eager to try their hand at a new hobby / interest.
New member Jan from Pegasus commented that ʻNoel was very good at explaining things, despite having to assist a large group of other turnersʻ. She was excited to see so many young people in the room turning, and thoroughly enjoyed the session, being very proud of the garden dibbler she produced for her first effort - “I will definitely use thisʻ
Mike from North Loburn has his own lathe and has turned before but as a new member, appreciated the expertise available in the Club and the chance to use equipment he doesnʻt have in his workshop.
Junior member Leonard was amongst many teenagers from the Rangiora CHEF group - the Christian Home Educating Families group, working away on what is known as a live edged bowlwhere the bark is left exposed in its natural state on the top edge of the bowl to add contrast to the turned and polished interior of the inside of the bowl. The woodturning efforts of members of the CHEF group in the Clubrooms meets some of their curriculum requirements. While also having a lathe at home, Leonard loves coming to the Clubrooms for the expertise he receives from Noel, Merv and others, plus the socialising over the lathes which is an important part of the Club.
While Mike and Leonard have lathes at home, do not have this essential piece of woodturning equipment available, usually due to lack of available space. This is where the Club fulfils an important role - providing all the equipment needed, lathes, tools, sharpening systems etc as well as a large selection of suitable timber, all available as part of the very low cost per session. If you are interested in knowing more, please contact Howard on 021353 886 or visit the club in the Northbrook Studios, Northbrook Road on Wednesday afternoons or Thursday evenings. More details are also available on the Clubʻs website at https:// nthcantwoodcraft.net Weʻre sure you will enjoy the experience!

Mayor Dan Gordon Update
As we look back on Matariki Weekend, I hope you had the chance to spend quality time with family and friends. Matariki is a time to pause, reflect and reconnect. It’s those moments of togetherness that truly strengthen our community.
I thoroughly enjoyed joining the Pegasus Residents’ Group for their Te Iwa o Matariki evening. It was a fantastic night of celebration, bringing people together and exploring the fantastic work done by Te Kōhaka o Tūhaitara Trust in the wetlands, including seeing all of the Matariki plantings. The following morning, I had the pleasure of taking part in the Pegasus Parkrun 9th birthday event. While I joined the walking group rather than running, it was a great way to get out and enjoy the company of others in one of my favourite spots in our district. My thanks to the organisers and volunteers who make events like these such a success.
Ronel Stephens has been the driving force behind the Cuppa, and her catering is the stuff of local legend. A huge thank you as well to Rhonda Mather for her tireless support from the early days, helping form Waiora Links and championing a voice for residents. We’re also grateful to the outgoing committee — Ian McGregor, Steph McDonald and others — along with the ever-supportive Shona Powell, Chair of the Woodend-Sefton Community Board and many other community members. Thankfully, the Cuppa will continue under new leadership. I look forward to seeing what’s next. Council has recently adopted our Annual Plan with a 4.98 percent rates increase, one of the lowest in Canterbury. It aligns with our Long-Term Plan and reflects careful planning and fiscal responsibility while maintaining the quality services our residents rely on. Thanks to everyone who made a submission.
Recently, we also gathered to farewell Waiora Links Community Trust and Ronel’s Community Cuppa. While it was sad to see these initiatives wrap up, the event was a wonderful chance to celebrate the incredible work they’ve done. The Cuppa in particular has played a vital role in connecting people and welcoming new residents to Pegasus over the past eight years.
I’m also really enjoying my drop-in sessions. Keep an eye on the Council’s Facebook page for the next dates. I welcome contact from anyone who needs assistance or has an issue that you might want to discuss.
Email me at dan.gordon@wmk.govt.nz or phone 021 906 437.
I’m here to help.
Woodend - Sefton Community Board
New bus stop in Ravens wood Commercial area
The Board, working with the Council roading team managed to get Environment Canterbury to change the route for the 95 and 97 buses. They will now do a short deviation into the Ravenswood Commercial area and utilise the new bus stop on Bob Robertson Drive opposite Gull that the Council installed. It’s likely to be an interim step, hence no bus shelter or seat, as the Woodend Bypass will bring some changes
What’s happening
In the background there are always projects progressing that the Board is involved in. Here are a few which you will be hearing and seeing more about this year
• Staff are analysing feedback received on the Pegasus Youth Space. Once complete a report will come to the Board. Thanks for all the feedback.
• Work is ongoing at the Waikuku Beach Pond opening it up, removing some invasive species and planting natives which will allow for views of the water and the birds that use the area. Interpretative signs are currently being designed.
• Staff are developing a proposed design for the new toilets, changing rooms and an exciting new playground at Woodend Beach which will come out for public consultation. We can’t wait to see the proposed design for the playground as it promises to be amazing.
• A new Welcome to Woodend sign will be installed on Rangiora Woodend Road.
Farewell and our thanks to Waiora Links Trust
Board members would like to thank Ronel Stephens along with the other Trustees, current and former, the team of volunteers, and the sponsors of Waiora Links Trust. They held some great events, provided opportunities for residents to connect with each other, and Ronel’s Community Cuppa was a monthly highlight for many. At the Cuppa Ronel always gave us the opportunity to give an update on what was happening in the area and Council staff were often welcomed as guest speakers. We’re thrilled to hear the good news that the volunteers are working on bringing a new cuppa to life in some format Where would we be without volunteers?
Our next meeting – all are welcome

Cuppa in the Community
A free morning tea for people from Woodend, Ravenswood, Pegasus and surrounding areas. 10am first Tuesday monthly at St Barnabas Church Hall, Woodend.
Shona Powell, Chairperson Woodend Sefton Community Board, attends our meetings and keeps us informed about what is happening in the area and listens to concerns we may have. We decided to invite Shona as our guest speaker so she could inform us about the role of the Woodend Sefton Community Board. Community Boards are elected and paid. The Board has a statutory role to represent and advocate for the interests of the community. There are five elected members and two councillors. Shona said that the biggest challenge at the moment is ongoing rapid growth. The meetings are formal, and the agenda and minutes are on the Council website. Shona went on to say that members are part of the community and need to be able to talk with residents and business owners to get their views, problems and concerns. They aim to be a link between the community and Council.
Last year the Board achieved Accessible viewing platforms at local beaches, a new playground and toilets in Woodlands Estate in Woodend, new Woodend Town Centre toilets which were co -funded with the Council, provided extended surf lifesaving patrols, seating along Bob Robertson Drive, Waikuku Beach pond clean up and planting, first stage and the Pegasus Community Centre is going ahead. The Board has advocated for the Woodend Bypass, a pedestrian path between Woodend and Ravenswood and a bus to come into Ravenswood. Shona also told us about upcoming improvements to the local area.
For your diary: Tuesday 7 July –Martin Pugh, Community Development Facilitator will speak about Community Support.

Pegasus parkrun - 9th Anniversary!
Well it certainly feels like the colder months are with us and along with the change in weather we see a bit of a downturn in participation numbers.
That doesn’t stop Pegasus parkrun though, on 21 June we celebrated our 9th anniversary, as it’s well known that Pegasus parkrun often set up themed events, it will come as no surprise that we had a theme of CATS for the 21st.
There was a large number of Cat People around the Lake that morning. Fabulous felines, Aspiring Alleycats, Tenacious tomcats, Crazy cartoon cats, wandering wildcats, Flighty feral cats, tremendous tabby cats, Cat woman and possibly even the Cheshire cat are all very likely to be participants.
Apart from this celebration the last four weeks at Pegasus parkrun have seen 518 participants out on course, with 54 Volunteers administrating those four events.

Matt James for Council - Community First. Growth that works.
I’m standing for Council to deliver strong, future-focused leadership backed by real experience and deep community commitment. My career spans both national and international corporations, iwi organisations, and over a decade running my own business here in North Canterbury, helping local people and organisations succeed. This district is my home. I’ve raised my family here, chaired school boards and charitable trusts, and I currently lead the Pegasus Residents’ Group. I understand our
communities because I live and serve in them every day. My focus is smarter growth, stronger communities, and a Council that listens, acts, and delivers. I bring a rare combination of governance, business acumen, social conscience, and independent thinking to every decision. I’m here to work for you and to help shape a district that’s resilient, connected, and thriving. That’s my commitment to Kaiapoi, Pines Beach, Kairaki, Woodend, Tuahiwi, Pegasus, Ravenswood, Waikuku and Sefton.

Ngā mihi o Matariki, te tau hou MāoriGreetings of the Māori New Year
As winter brings the longer nights, so the sky darkens over the park and when it’s at its darkest, a cluster of shimmering stars appears over Te Tai o Mahaanui (Pegasus Bay)Matariki! Also known in the northern hemisphere as Pleiades or Subaru, Matariki heralds the Māori New Year - a time to honour those who have
walks of life as a moment to pause, reflect, and connect with the land. If your group is custodian to a biota node in the park, now is the time to come visit! Plan a picnic together! Come see how the place is doing and see if anything needs clearing or replanting. Bear in mind the park and beach are closed after dark and the best places to go stargazing are up high - try Maukatere! (Mt Grey).
passed, celebrate the present with whānau (family) and plant seeds of hope for the future.
As a Tiriti o Waitangi settlement trust, Te Kōhaka o Tūhaitara welcomes this uniquely Kiwi celebration, rich in heritage and meaning, and hopes it will be embraced by people from all
Full steam ahead!
Winter may be here, but things are still busy in the park. There is restoration work to do, education sessions planned, and community support continues to grow — even with frosty mornings and muddy gumboots! A big thank you once again to Kaiapoi High
School students for all their stamina and hard work.
As always, our planting season kicks into full swing by June: in this month we planted 1,261 plants within the park! We couldn’t have done it without the fantastic group of Kaiapoi High School students that came for a planting day at Steve’s node, near Te Kohanga Wetlands. Despite the cold, the students brought great energy and helped us get over 200 native plants in the ground.
Ka pai tō mahi, team!

Fundraising Focus
The Trust’s two settlement partners, Ngai Tahu and Waimakariri District Council, need as much help as they can from stakeholders and donors in the community. A lot of work at the Trust has to take place indoors at the computer, identifying grants and funds we can apply to, for projects we need to do to achieve our vision.
We’ve been hard at work submitting funding applications to fund materials for our ongoing fieldwork, supplies for our planting programmes, and new equipment to continue with all the routine maintenance. Securing this funding is vital to continue delivering meaningful outcomes for the park and community.
If you would like to donate to us or leave a legacy to this place in your will, please be in touch! We would love to hear from you.
Looking Ahead
We’ve got more planting days coming up in July and August, including a session with students from Christ’s College, working four days each to
complete their Gold Diploma. There are also plans in the works for a public volunteer planting day—keep an eye out for more details soon!
If you’d like to get involved, volunteer, or organise a group / school planting day, please reach out — This is everyone’s park, so we are always keen for everyone to get involved.
Ngā mihi nui,
The team at Te Kōhaka o Tūhaitara Trust

Stepping Through History: The Cultural Heartbeat of Scottish Country Dancing in Canterbury
Scottish Country Dancing is more than just a social pastime - it’s a living expression of Scotland’s cultural heritage, carried across centuries and continents through music, movement, and community spirit. Here in Canterbury, it thrives in the welcoming halls of Rangiora and Oxford, where the North Canterbury Scottish Country Dancing clubs keep this vibrant tradition alive.
Rooted in 18th-century Scottish society and influenced by European courtly dance, Scottish Country Dancing reflects the fusion of Highland pride and Lowland elegance. Each set and step connect dancers not only with one another but with generations past, who danced the same reels, jigs, and strathspeys at village gatherings, grand balls, and ceilidhs.
Unlike Highland dancing, which is more performance-oriented, Scottish Country Dancing is social and inclusive. Dancers move in sets of six to eight, working together through structured patterns combining grace, rhythm, and teamwork. Many dances bear names that tell stories—The Duke of Perth, Mairi’s Wedding, and The Reel of the 51st Division—evoking historical events, landscapes, or legends. In Canterbury, the North Canterbury Scottish Country Dancing clubs at Rangiora and Oxford welcome dancers of all ages and experience levels. Whether it’s a regular club night or a lively ball, the spirit of community and shared heritage shines through, supported by the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society’s global network.
For locals, joining a Scottish Country Dance is more than learning steps— it’s about becoming part of a cultural thread stretching from Scotland’s rugged hills to the heart of Canterbury, carried forward one reel at a time. We meet every Monday at 7:30 p.m. at the Methodist Hall, 176 King Street, Rangiora. Come and give it a whirlyou never know where your feet might take you!

This Month with Harry
This month it’s back to Ravenswood and a request from other parts of our fair town.
SILLS After Robert Sills and family. A farmer and contractor he settled in Woodend in the 1860s. Very much involved with the Methodist church affairs. The family were to move about a bit including both islands, but two sons were to return to Woodend on their retirement to end their days. George who farmed at Springston married Mary nee Catchpole. Along with sister Florrie Judson nee Catchpole, these two were into photography in a big way. They were among the first to master the art of hand colouring their prints.
WITTE From Germany, Bernard Heinrich George settled in Woodend in the 1860s. As well as farming he ran a brick kiln on Parsonage Road.
KOTUA The Kotua whanau were a respected and well-educated Māori family living in Woodend during early settlement. All great sports people, Rau Kotua gained representative honours in cricket.
CURTIS Another early farmer, Alfred Curtis owned substantial holdings in both Woodend and Rangiora districts. Also owned the Mandeville flourmill on Chinnerys Road, later moved to the Ashburton district.
CHINNERY From Norfolk, Charles Chinnery with wife and twin daughters, arrived on the ‘Mermaid’ in 1862. A brilliant engineer, he had gained his skills working in the Woolwich Arsenal in London. Starting at Halswell in the flax industry, he had moved to the
district by 1872 leasing Leech’s mill on the Cam before purchasing the Mandeville mill on the Waiora stream in 1882. This mill which processed flax by day and flour at night was situated nor’west of the present nursery. It is said that Chinnery watched the Māori women dressing their flax and was able to invent a machine to emulate the process. He was able to ride out the boom and bust of the flax industry by storing his product when prices were low and waited for change. His ups and downs included a couple of fires when one night in 1879 the Cam mill burnt down and no-one noticed till next morning, and a large shed of stored material at the Mandeville site went up in smoke. It was rumoured at the time this was the result of Chinnery having to sack one of his staff. With the advent of the reaper and binder, the demand for twine went up and he did very nicely. He built a big two storied house which he called ‘Tixall’ to accommodate his large family of 12. This was where Leo and Jenny live now and burned down in mysterious circumstances several years ago. An astute businessman, when the local suppliers demanded 3 pounds ($6) a ton for flax, Chinnery built a mill in Morrinsville where flax could be purchased for 1 pound. On returning from one of his many trips to the North Island he consumed a tin of fish, from which he contracted food poisoning and died soon after. Family lore has it that Charles Chinnery could neither read nor write and had to rely on staff and children. J.H.

Kia Ora Koutou. By the time you read this article, it will be over, but as I write this piece, this coming week will be National Volunteer Week.
Here’s to our crew of more than 11,800 volunteers serving at almost 600 Stations across Aotearoa, New Zealand. Our volunteers respond 24/7, 365 days of the year. We would like to acknowledge what they give up to do this. Dinners are cut short; work is left for others to pick up and sometimes precious moments are missed.
Please join us in thanking our volunteers for their dedication, and their families and employers who support them, to respond.
In the Woodend Volunteer Fire Brigade, we recently held our AGM, and it was interesting to read our Station Training Coordinator’s Report. He writes and I quote “The training team has
had another busy year meeting the needs of the Brigade, both with Monday night training and team member development.” Over this last year we have had quite a number of our team completing courses which takes a lot of hard work and sacrifice on theirs and the trainer’s part. I would like to acknowledge the following people who have been on various courses and thank them on behalf of the Brigade – (I have just listed the trainers) L. Jory, K. Manaena, A. Penman, A. Raja, J. Hendtlass, R. Haines, C. Horner, A. Henham and S. Grant (You will have seen articles on most of these people in the past couple of years). The courses range from Station Officer, Senior Fire Fighter, Fire Fighter and Qualified Fire Fighter Operational Support. I understand five more members are booked on courses to enhance their skills, this year, which is great for our Brigade.
I would like to finish this article with a safety reminder as we have passed the shortest day, 21 June, with many more cold / icy days I’m sure still to come!
On Wednesday 4 June we had a delightful day out. Tenpin bowling was the game of choice with 14 members playing two games. The winner of the first game was John Jones and the second game was Craig Roberts both with impressive scores. The rest of the group watched while drinking coffee and giving
Woodend Friendship Club
encouragement to the players.
After finishing playing, we went to the Richmond Club meeting up with four other members and enjoyed a lovely lunch.
We had a great turn out for our morning tea at the RSA, 28 members enjoyed getting together to chat and enjoy a lovely muffin or scone. Our normal meetings are held on the third Wednesday of the month starting at 2pm, we are happy to welcome any new potential members 65 and over to come along and enjoy listening to our guest speakers and meeting some of our members. If you think you may be interested in joining us, you are most welcome to join us on one of our trips out. Come along and have a look at our next meeting at Woodend Community Centre.
A reminder the deadline for contributions and advertising is 21st of the month 5pm.

Councillor Redmond seeks re-election
Councillor Philip Redmond, QSM, has announced that he is seeking re-election to the Waimakariri District Council. He is standing in the Kaiapoi-Woodend Ward where he topped the polls in both 2019 and 2022.
A former Kaiapoi-based lawyer, Redmond brings extensive legal expertise, company directorships and proven local government experience to his councillor role. He was awarded the Queen’s Service Medal (QSM) for community service in 2019. As a long-standing member of the Institute of Directors (IOD), he brings extensive governance expertise to Council.
Redmond supports the Local Water Done Well reforms and the Council’s proposed internal business unit, which he believes will deliver real benefits to Waimakariri District’s ratepayers. He firmly believes in retaining local control of assets and keeping chlorine out of urban residential water supplies.
“Waimakariri’s unprecedented growth requires experienced leadership to effectively guide our district through the opportunities and challenges ahead,” says Redmond.
Key priorities for Redmond include implementing water and Resource Management Act (RMA) reforms, while ensuring that the Council delivers on its core responsibilities to residents.
Redmond is a passionate advocate for the Waimakariri District and prides himself on being responsive to residents’ needs. He champions sustainable and affordable rates
alongside investment in key projects that will ensure Waimakariri continues to thrive as an attractive place to live.
“We must invest wisely in essential infrastructure to support growth and development, while maintaining affordability for residents,” he notes.
During his two terms, the Council has achieved one of the lowest rates increases in New Zealand.
Redmond continues to advocate for roading and drainage improvements and enhanced community facilities throughout the Woodend, Ravenswood, Pegasus Town and Kaiapoi areas.
For Redmond, key future opportunities include delivering infrastructure improvements to support Waimakariri’s growing population, maintaining strong local representation and services and responsibly addressing climate change and sustainability, while keeping rates affordable.
Redmond’s commonsense and practical approach provides sound governance. He is an active contributor to a collaborative council that delivers results for its community.
“It has been a privilege to serve the community over the last nine years, and I hope to continue working constructively on behalf of Waimakariri residents,” said Redmond.
