As we come to the close of another year, it’s a pleasure to reflect on what has truly been a great year for The Woodpecker and for our community. We’ve welcomed a wonderful number of new advertisers, contributors, and community champions to our pageseach adding colour, insight, and heart to every edition. With rising costs touching everyone, we’ve made a small adjustment to our advertising rates for 2026. This helps ensure The Woodpecker remains sustainable, and we genuinely appreciate your understanding and continued support. At the time of writing, we are looking forward to hosting our Christmas Thank You Evening - an opportunity for us to acknowledge and celebrate the many people who help bring The Woodpecker to life. From our dedicated deliverers braving the elements each month, to our distributors ensuring magazines reach every corner of our delivery area, to our committed Board members guiding the Trust with care and stewardship, and every individual who has contributed an article, photo, notice, advert, or idea - we are incredibly
grateful. And, of course, a heartfelt thank you goes to you, our readers. Without your ongoing engagement, encouragement, and community spirit, The Woodpecker simply wouldn’t be what it is.
This time of year naturally encourages us to pause - look back on the year that’s been and to look ahead with fresh energy to the one to come. It’s a season for family, friends, connection, rest, and replenishment. I hope you find moments to slow down, reflect, celebrate, and enjoy what truly matters.
As this is our combined December / January edition, it also means I have a rare treat ahead… a month off from editing! A welcome chance to recharge and return refreshed for 2026. On behalf of The Woodpecker Community Trust, I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a safe, happy, and healthy New Year. May the season bring you joy, warmth, and a sense of community—today and always.

Woodend Spring Flower Show 4 October 2025
spring there were delicious Devonshire teas on sale, and these were very popular and a raffle which exceeded all expectations.
Once again, the Woodend Spring Flower Show was a great success in its 92nd year it is as popular as ever with almost 1000 entries in 164 different categories and despite the weather not coming to the party the visitors on the day kept everyone very busy. As well as the beautiful flowers entered there were floral displays from the North Canterbury Floral Art Society, the daffodil competitions as always drew competitors from all over New Zealand and the children’s handcraft section was full of very creative designs. There was also a bloke’s section which had more entries this year than last, so we hope to see even more next year. Because of the weather all the stall holders were inside, which they very much appreciated, there was a cake stall and raffle run by the Pegasus Woodend Women’s institute and a craft stall, the Woodend Gardening club had a stall, but they weren’t all local Kaiapoi glass also had a stall. In keeping with
The event was preceded by a children’s craft day held on 1st October where the children could make items for entry to the show. This year they could choose any or all the
following caterpillar on a leaf, mask, decorated biscuit and handmade card as well as a chance to complete the colouring competition, always popular and over-subscribed and a great way to spend a wet school holiday day. The show is run by the committee,
their family and friends and volunteers from the Woodend Gardening Club and the members of the committee would like to thank all those volunteers for their untiring efforts.
This event could not run without local support, and the Woodend Spring Flower Show Committee would like to extend our thanks to the following for their support for this year’s event:
Woodpecker Community Trust for their grant.
Creative Communities Scheme, Waimakariri District Council, for their grant for the craft day held on 1st October.
Woodend Sefton Community Board Waimakariri District Council, for their grant towards the flower show.
PAWS Vets for
their donation to the children’s prizes
Kirstyn Barnett for her support of the children’s craft day.
Woodend Nurseries for their donation of trees.
Kaiapoi Menz Shed for their
assistance with the photo boards.
Bunnings, Marshlands for their assistance with the tables.
Thanks also to Templeton Daffodils for their continued and ongoing support of both the flower show and the work of the committee.
All the advertisers in the booklet which helps us have enough funds to keep this event going, all profits from this year’s event are used to develop and promote next year’s show. We hope to see you all there with lots of entries.
We are delighted to show you some photos of this year’s show.

St Barnabas Church Update
St Barnabas Anglican Church joined in the community Halloween activities again this year. We provided non scary and fun interactive games for children
and young people to enjoy at the ‘church house’ or ‘candy apple house’ as our host house has become known for. This year’s theme was Scooby Doo, and that we don’t have to hide behind masks, but that God has grace and love for us all. In the space of just two hours, we gave away 240 toffee apples and 260 Scooby Doo snack biscuits, and 150 flyers about our theme. Luckily there were still lots of lollies to share
for the last people who arrived to participate in the fun and games. Christmas is just around the corner, and we look forward to celebrating with you all.
All are welcome at any of our Christmas services. If you have never stepped inside a church before but you may have been thinking about then here is your personal invite to come and check it out. Christmas is a great time to visit as there are always visitors, so you don’t have to worry about not knowing what to do or anything like that. Come and experience the Christmas story with us.
Grace and Peace.

Well, it’s that time of year again! I am sure we are all wondering where the year has gone!! Woodend Volunteer Fire Brigade would like to wish our community a very happy Christmas with family and friends and a prosperous New Year, especially after the tough years that we have had recently with covid. Thank you for turning out in droves to our recent Halloween Community Event. It was lovely to see you all and to see you dressed up and enjoying the evening with your families. A big shout out to the businesses that supported us; namely New World Ravenswood, Hellers Kaiapoi, Woolworths Rangiora, Mitre 10 Papanui, Steve from Spencerville Fire Brigade and particularly Mainpower. Without you, it would have been hard to run this event. As I am sure you know, our Brigade is a Volunteer Station and we are not there 24/7. However, any fires / incidents that we are called to; if our
members are in the district; we will always turn out and attend. Often this requires us to leave our workplaces / or Selfemployed businesses, and families, for an extended period. Over Christmas and the New Year period, there may be fewer members around and we ask that you take care when lighting any fires (www. checkitsalright.nz) and that you drive as safely as possible and be aware of other road users around you over the holiday season. On that note, if you live in Woodend or Ravenswood and are available during the weekdays, we would love to hear from you if you are interested in volunteering with us. Although it requires commitment from you, you will find it very rewarding and it will give you a great deal of satisfaction helping your community. You will have noted that in past articles on the Members of the Brigade – this was a common statement when asked how they felt about the Brigade and why they joined.
Once again, a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year
Many thanks to those we have worked with in 2025. May your holidays be filled with sunshine, joy, and a touch of summer magic. Here’s to new homes, memories, and a bright 2026.

Woodend Friendship Club Report
At our October meeting, Heather Anderson delivered an engaging presentation on Driving Miss Daisy. She detailed the company’s origins and the motivations behind its founding. Established in 2008 by Melanie and Jack Harper in Havelock North, the idea was sparked by Melanie’s experience driving her aunt to various appointments. Officially launched in 2009 with just one vehicle, the company has expanded into a nationwide franchise network boasting over 80 franchises. These franchises operate throughout New Zealand and have now extended overseas. The service reached North Canterbury in 2012. Driving Miss Daisy offers companion driving services, with all drivers trained in first aid and police vetted.

The weather was sunny although a little windy, and tables were put out so we could sit around and eat our lunch in a sheltered spot in the garden. With the competitive side of our club programme now under way with the Interclub competition in progress, we are represented by the young and the not so young.
Woodend Bowling Club
One of these ‘not so young’ happens to be a spritely 94 year’s young Thelma Smith. Thelma came to our club in 2020 having moved south from Auckland where she started her bowling days seventy years ago. Known then as Thelma Robertson she was (and still is) an accomplished bowler who has represented at Club, Regional and National level bowls. Her energy levels know no bounds and is an active, contributing member to
the club serving as a Women’s selector for the last two seasons, along with helping to do some coaching along the way. Thelma married Brian Smith at the St Stephens Church, Tuahiwi in 2021 with both her and Brian being eighty-nine years of age and they live in their own home in Woodend. We congratulate Thelma on her reaching 70 years of bowling and wish her many more years around the greens.

Woodend Primary School Community Engagement Fund Recipient
Woodend School was successful recently in receiving a grant from the Community Engagement Fund, via The Woodpecker Community Trust to part fund literacy resources for our senior students. Literacy is a nationwide focus at the moment with many educators striving to improve the data around this curriculum area. Our teachers have all attended professional development
this year in Structured Literacy and whole class explicit teaching. As part of this learning, the teachers at Woodend School have been focussing on whole class teaching of reading at the level the children in each year group require. This has necessitated the need to be able to provide whole class sets of novels.
We appreciate the support from the Community Engagement Fund which will go towards providing some of these resources for our students.
If your community group is interested in applying for this fund, please see details on Page 38.

It was wonderful to attend this year’s North Canterbury Business Awards and be part of celebrating the hard work happening across our business community.
Every year I’m reminded of the skill, innovation and determination that sit behind so many local enterprises. Our businesses bring real flavour and opportunity to North Canterbury, and it was a privilege to present an award on the night to help honour those achievements. Thanks to Heather Warwick, Claire Gifford and the team at ENC for putting together another fantastic event. Hearing the stories of this year’s finalists was a good reminder of the skills and range of businesses we have here and the important role they play in shaping our district.
I also love joining in with Oxford’s Christmas Wonderland decorating a tree. A truly special time of year. It’s also the time of year when everything seems to speed up. Term four is quickly drawing to a close. Over the coming weeks I’ll be attending school assemblies and prizegivings across the district. These occasions offer a wonderful chance to acknowledge our young people and celebrate their achievements, especially those finishing their schooling journey. We have so much talent in North Canterbury, and I always feel proud of the potential I see in every hall I visit.
As we transition into the festive season, the district is beginning to take on its familiar end-of-year energy. The Christmas Tree Festival is underway, including the installation of our district’s trees outside the Kaiapoi and Rangiora Service Centres. The decorated trees in the foyer of the Rangiora Service Centre are something I look forward to every year. They bring a sense of warmth to the building and always spark conversation among staff, elected members and visitors. We all end up quietly choosing favourites.
At Council, we’ve been focused on inducting our new councillors and setting ourselves up for the important work ahead. I’m genuinely encouraged by the energy, commitment and diverse strengths around our table. There is a lot to do, but I’m confident that together we can meet the challenges and opportunities in front of us and continue to serve our district well as we head into the new year. I welcome contact from anyone who needs assistance or has an issue that you might want to discuss.

Cuppa in the Community
A free morning tea for people from Woodend, Ravenswood, Pegasus and surrounding areas. We had an excellent turnout on Tuesday, 11 November, with around 30 local residents attending to hear from our speakers from NZTA about the Pegasus–Belfast motorway project. Representatives Nicola Hunt, Brendon French and Stephen Carruthers from NZTA were present, along with Don Young from the Waimakariri District Council, newly elected Councillor Shona Powell, and Councillor Brent Cairns with his wife Shirley.
The session provided a general overview of the preliminary work already completed and included a video presentation that took us along the proposed route of the new motorway. Many questions were answered, and it looks set to be an impressive development once finished. Work is expected to begin in summer 2026 and will take at least four years to complete. There was no discussion regarding tolls, as that decision rests with the Government.
For your diary:
Tuesday 9 December – The Lions will be selling Christmas cakes at $25 each and telling us a little about the work they carry out. Following that we will have an informal cuppa with some festive food Thanks to our sponsors Joe's Garage, The Coffee Club and St Barnabas Church
Merry Christmas Meri Kirihimete!
As the festive season approaches, I wish you and your loved ones a safe and joyful holiday.
Christmas is a time to remember what’s important, the simple pleasures of being together with family and friends. Amid the hustle and bustle, take a moment to pause, reflect, and enjoy the memories you’re creating.
A heartfelt thank you to our emergency services, medical teams, lifeguards, and everyone working to keep us safe while we celebrate this holiday period.
For those that are able, please consider supporting local businesses while ticking off your Christmas lists. Shopping locally helps our Waimakariri community thrive and keeps the good cheer and neighbourly connection right here, at our doorsteps.
Remember to give yourself the gift of kindness - this season is as much about rest and self-care as it is about giving and sharing. On behalf of the Council, I hope this season brings you togetherness, hope and happiness.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Meri Kirihimete!

This term has been filled with many memorable moments, each showcasing the hard work, dedication, and spirit that define our school. Whether in the classroom, on the sports field, through the arts, or within our community initiatives, we’ve seen outstanding achievements and countless moments of pride across every area of school life.
Strengthen science, technology, and creativity.
Celebrate identity and belonging.
Learning Priorities
Based on your feedback, Literacy & Numeracy was rated the highest priority with an average importance rating of approximately 4.6 out of 5. Social & Emotional learning was the secondhighest priority.
Looking Ahead: Our Focus for 2026–2028
Over the next few years, we will focus on:
Woodend School’s Future: What Our Community Said!
The Woodend School Strategic Plan Consultation was a success, and we extend a huge thank you to everyone who contributed! Your voice is vital in shaping the future of Woodend School.
What Our Community Values
We heard clearly what you appreciate most about our school:
Caring and dedicated staff
A strong community and whānau feel
A safe, inclusive environment
High expectations for learning
Your Vision for the Future
As we look ahead, you want us to:
Keep the family feel as the school grows.
Maintain strong learning in literacy and numeracy.
Planning for continued roll growth
Enhancing learning spaces and resources
Deepening wellbeing and inclusion
Maintaining high-quality teaching and learning
Together, we’ll ensure Woodend School remains a place where every child feels they belong, can succeed, and loves learning.
Jump Jam
Our Woodend School Challenge Team, The Woodend Toybox Battalion, competed in the South Island Jump Jam Championships on November 1st. The team worked incredibly hard and delivered their best performance on the night. We were absolutely over the moon to place second in the South Island!
A huge thank you to Pip and Mrs Taylor
for their dedication and commitment to the team. We are so proud of every student involved. Special mentions to: Xanthe, who was unable to compete due to injury Olly, for stepping into Xanthe’s place at the last minute and Makenzi, our superstar reserve who showed up and supported the team every step of the way.
Our Parents and Staff Team also took to the stage, performing the ‘Captain Jack’ routine in front of hundreds of spectators! The team included Pip, Abby, Christel, Mr Moore, Miss Ford, Mr O’Neil, Mrs Neylon, and Mrs Harper. It was a fantastic opportunity for our adults to experience firsthand the effort and commitment our students put into their performances.
Athletics
Our whole school has been working hard on developing athletics skills this term. It was wonderful to see every team celebrating their efforts during team athletics events earlier in the term.
In Years 5–8, those who qualified went on to compete at the North Canterbury Zones. A special congratulations to Keira R, who broke the Year 6 girls North Canterbury record in the 80m sprint: an outstanding achievement! We had some fantastic results across all disciplines and look forward to seeing some of our athletes compete at the Canterbury Zones in the coming weeks.
Tennis Champs
Term 4 sees Te Maunga organise their own Tennis Tournament to compete for the Herbert-Smith Tennis Cups. These are the oldest cups at Woodend School and hold a rich history with familiar local names. The tournament
was student-led, with a fantastic job done coordinating umpires, ladders, and scoring. Congratulations to Harry our Boys Champion and Sascha, our Girls Champion. Well done also to our runners-up Olivia and Jack for their strong performance.
Final Bell Ringing Ceremony
The 2025 school year ends on Tuesday 16 December, and this is when our special Bell Ringing Ceremony will be held. Bell Ringing Time: 10:45am Location: School quad. We warmly invite all parents and whānau to come along and celebrate this special moment with us.

PEGASUS TOWN KNITTING GROUP
The weather might be starting to warm up but that doesn’t tempt the industrious crafters of the Pegasus Town Knitting Group to slow down any. Quite the opposite in fact - it seems there is a renewed sense of purpose in meeting other’s needs and the need for 100% woollen garments for newborn babies never quite goes away, not even over the summer months
This group meets every Friday from 10 am to 12 noon at The Peg and Pint (formerly The Good Home) beside the lakeside playground at Pegasus, to knit and natter together. Although, it could be said that by the time one has inspected all the lovely incoming goods of the members previous week’s efforts, and then caught up with each of these members, the two hours pass very quickly and maybe only one row has been knitted. That is one of the good things about this friendly group - there is no pressure to produce. However, produce they do.
Typical baby items donated over the past year
The primary goal of the Pegasus Town Knitting Group is to knit for the premature and newborn babies of Christchurch’s Neonatal Unit or the Maternity Wards of Christchurch and Rangiora Hospitals - whether it be blankets, hats, jumpers, cardigans, vests or singlets This year over 1000 items have been donated to Christchurch babies. Many other projects have also been tackled including beanies for Men’s and Women’s Night Shelters, mitts and hot water bottle covers for children in temporary accommodation at campgrounds, larger child items for new mum and young family support charities such as Rachel’s House in Rangiora, catnip toys for our furry friends at Kitty Kingdom, twiddles muffs and toys for emotional support situations as in dementia homes or for the neurodiverse, and knitted toys for other charities such as Salvation Army or Social Support Agencies to distribute to their families in need Over the year, a further 900 items were distributed to these agencies, and these have been a satisfying way to utilise donated yarns not suitable for babies.
Some of the group-produced items such as Barbie doll clothes, catnip toys and Christmas decorations are also for sale in the General Store on Main Street, Pegasus - the proceeds from which go towards buying more wool. As will proceeds from the group’s annual Christmas raffle, tickets for which will be available from the beginning of December. Please see the contacts below if you would like to support the group with purchase of a ticket. $2.00 for 4 draws, prizes as pictured below.
Also please make contact or if you have, or know of anyone else who may have, wool lying around - this would also be very gratefully received and, most assuredly, put to good use.
New members are also warmly welcomed - Don’t feel as if you have to be a good knitter to join as there are always ladies willing to offer assistance. All wool, patterns and needles are supplied – just come along.

Pegasus parkrun news!
Pegasus parkrun has now completed more than 450 Events around the pathway of Lake Pegasus.
Since the winter of 2016 we have regularly lined up on the grass area between Bob's Bridge and the amphitheatre, attracting local Pegasus residents, people from Waimakariri and indeed Hurunui areas and a wide range of visitors from other parts of NZ. Our international visitors have come from Australia, South Africa, Canada, England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales. parkrun is a truly Global phenomenon, and Pegasus is firmly a part of that ’family’. So what is parkrun all about?
First and foremost it is free to participate, equally important is that it is community, parkrun is a safe, weekly 5km jaunt around a predetermined course at 8:00am. Saturday mornings - some areas can have a different start time, so always best to check. The name parkrun continues as it is global branding, but, importantly, it is not just about running, walking has
become an essential part of parkrun and we welcome both runners and walkers to our events. parkrun is well known for its inclusivity and that opens it up to a much wider range of participants as you may have seen on that day of the weekend that we call ‘parkrunday’. If you like the idea of walking or running a 5km circuit, with like-minded people, come along and join in. Over the years we’ve had many people starting off doing one loop of the Lake for a while, before they attempt the full 5km.
We’d love to see you join in too. www.parkrun.co.nz/Pegasus NEXT ISSUE FEBRUARY 2026
Deadline for advertisements and community articles is on 21 JANUARY 2026
It is nearing the end of 2025 and the Menzshed continues to thrive and meet the needs of the local community in many small ways. We have been busy for the last couple of months doing furniture repairs and renovations, building gates, making plant containers, and we seem to have cornered the market in in building kwila (or pine) doorsteps. As well our guys have been busy on a range of personal projects.
If you think we can help you in any way please come and see us at Gladstone Park on a Monday, Wednesday or Friday between 9.30am and 12.30pm, or email us at menzshedpegasuswoodend@ gmail.com or call / txt Derrick on 022 436 5960. Merry Christmas from the Menzshed.

Garden Club Rose and Table Show: A Celebration of Colour, Craft, and Community
Woodend Garden Club brought the beauty of early summer indoors this week with its annual Rose and Table Show, an event that continues to delight members. The Woodend Community Centre was filled with fragrance, colour, and creativity as exhibitors presented their finest blooms and table designs, showcasing both skill and passion for gardening. Roses were the stars of the day. Entries ranged from velvety hybrid teas to abundant floribundas and delicately scented old-fashioned varieties. Exhibitors took great care to present perfect specimens—straight stems, well-formed blooms, and vibrant colour. The judges commented on the high standard across all classes this year, noting that the season’s early warmth had encouraged strong growth and abundant flowering. The table designs added another layer of charm. Members displayed impressive imagination, working with colour palettes that complemented their chosen flowers. From simple, elegant settings to more elaborate themed arrangements, the tables showed how floral art can elevate any gathering. Visitors lingered to admire the attention to detail, especially the clever use of foliage, props, and natural textures.
Alongside the exhibits, guest demonstrator Sharon Macdonald, Floral Art North Canterbury shared techniques for working with flowers in floral arrangements. Her practical tips, creative flair, and warm presentation style were well received and inspired many members to try new approaches
in their own homes.
This year’s show reaffirmed what makes the Woodend Garden Club special: friendly competition, shared learning, and a love of beautiful gardens. The committee extends its thanks to every exhibitor, helper, and visitor who contributed to a successful event.
Roses: A Quick Guide to Care and Success
Roses reward attention with outstanding performance. Here are the essentials for healthy plants and strong blooms:
1. Planting
• Choose a sunny spot—at least six hours of direct sun.
• Ensure good air circulation to reduce disease.
• Improve soil with compost and well-rotted manure before planting.
• Plant with the graft union just above soil level.
2. Watering
• Water deeply once or twice a week during dry spells.
• Avoid wetting foliage to reduce fungal issues.
• Mulch to retain moisture and keep roots cool.
3. Feeding
• Apply rose fertiliser in early spring, after the first flush, and again in mid-summer.
• Supplement with liquid seaweed or fish emulsion to support root health and overall vigour.
4. Pruning
• Prune in late winter or early
spring.
• Remove dead, diseased, damaged, or crossing wood.
• Shape the plant to create an open centre for airflow.
• Cut above outward-facing buds to encourage outward growth.
• Watch for aphids, black spot, rust, and powdery mildew.
• Use a combination of good hygiene, pruning, clean-up of fallen leaves, and targeted sprays when needed.
• Choose disease-resistant varieties if you prefer a lowmaintenance garden.
6. Deadheading
• Remove spent blooms regularly to encourage repeat flowering.
• Cut back to a strong five-leaflet stem.
