Woodend School student presented with Sir Peter Blake Leadership Award In the latter half of Term 2, Woodend School Senior Student Leaders completed a Student Leadership programme with the Sir Peter Blake Trust. The Sir Peter Blake Leader assigned to the Woodend School team was Erin Jackson, who was

an instrumental leader with the Volunteer Student Army after the Canterbury earthquakes and, who also recently started her own not-for-profit business. Erin had lots of stories and inspirational ideas to encourage the students to dream big! In the final assembly of Term 2, Woodend School student Ella Spark (far left) was presented with a Sir Peter Blake Leadership Award. Tracy Cromwell from Westpac Bank, sponsor of the Young Leader Awards, made the presentation. Ella was chosen as the worthy recipient by the Year 7/8 staff, and the Senior Management team, due to her dedication to her leadership role, as well as her overall attitude towards helping others. Ella did not know there was a Young Leader Award, so she was extremely surprised when the announcement was made. Kathryn had entered a Macrame Bracelet, Carol Giles from Masons Flat Hawarden WI entered a Childs Novelty Hat and Babies Mat, the points added together with the 3 Craft articles gave them most points to win the cup. 20 members from North Canterbury attended the 95th AGM in Wellington. Delegates and visitors enjoyed meeting up with old friends and making new ones. The business had some lively discussions and new ideas to think off. We were pleased to be able to send a delegate Pam Cleeve this year, results of our fundraising efforts. One evening Three Tenors from Operatunity entertained with popular opera, the audience enjoyed singing along with some of the tunes. Come the Cabaret evening six Federations competed against one another with dancing the cancan, singing, piano playing, juggling and telling of funny jokes. Members of the audience entered into the spirit of the Cabaret by dressing in the 1930 fashions. After the excitement of the cabaret the winners of the craft and other competitions were announced and given their trophies it was a great thrill for North Canterbury to be presented with the Robert Young Trophy. 2nd Birthday meeting in Kaiapoi at the Rivertown CafĂŠ in the morning with members enjoying various meals and a short meeting. They were joined by Bev Ensor Pegasus Woodend WI Federation Buddy. And we were thrilled to welcomed a new member Lisa Temple with Her Daughter Zoe, Then the afternoon they joined Kaiapoi Wi at the Riverside Bowling club to celebrate their 85th Birthday with members invited from Kainga WI, Ohoka WI, for a posh afternoon tea of Cucumber sandwiches and lots of lovely cakes , Members wore there Posh hats and gloves. Woodend Community Association Inc REPORT FOR AUGUST 2016

There has not been a lot of activity within the Woodend Community Association since the last report presented in the May edition of the Woodpecker. Perhaps this is the winter blues or people being diverted onto other matters that are involving their energies. When you consider all the different activities and other matters requiring input it stands to reason how over committed one can become. As well as having a family life. Most of the issues we deal with are not overly complex and usually require a limited input.

WALKWAY/CYCLEWAY PROJECT TO WOODEND BEACH By far, the project requiring the most energy at the moment is the continuation of the Walkway /Cycleway between Woodend and Woodend Beach and the fund raising efforts for this. Without the input and commitment of Committee members we would not be where we are at the moment. Ready to attack two of the hurdles acknowledge facing us in stage two. Negotiation of the sand dunes at the start of stage two (close to the junction of Sandhill and Woodend Beach Roads) and around the “S” bends before the long straight on towards the Beach. (Another challenging section that involves a bit of extra input.) To negotiate the sand dune area it is intended to retain the pathway at Road level and to retain the cut face of the sand dunes with “Gabion” retaining baskets. This was decided to be the most suitable method to be employed, is cost effective and will provide a reasonably aesthetic finish. The other options that involved going over the sand dunes were a little more complex and were to employ timber retaining and required a protective barrier Page 6 THE WOODPECKER AUGUST 2016

fence were considered but discarded on discussions with various agencies. A little undulation in the pathway could have been nice but this was out weighed by the safety requirements involved. By the time the “Gabions” weather in and with associated plantings the resulting finish will be aesthetically pleasing. Negotiating this corner has introduced an additional cost to our budget, but one we couldn’t avoid. (Unfortunately)

QUIZ NIGHT This was held on the 20th June at Monteiths Bar/Grill in Rangiora. As reported, this was a successful evening and enjoyed by all those who took part. Along with raffles, the auction and bequeaths a reasonable sum was raised. We would like to acknowledge two prize’s that were donated and not recognised in last months report, the being from:Sweet Pea and Woodend’s Paws Vets. Our thanks to these two donors The Community Association are still looking for fund raising events to help us realise the completion of the project. Woodend School Deputy Principal Adrienne Simpson, said that Ella leads from behind, encouraging others along the way, and she is hardworking, caring towards others and a great team player. “We are all extremely proud of Ella and all our Young Leaders. We look forward to seeing what they come up with from this experience and seeing what differences they can make.” The end of May signalled the end of term for the last school Board. Woodend School wishes to acknowledge the contributions of retiring board members Rob Boyd (Chairperson), Tarsh Howse and Arapata Reuben. With 5 nominations for parent representation received for the next board no election was required so the following were declared elected by our returning officer. Ross Bartlett Miles Dalton (Deputy Chair) Dean Fraser Mark Paterson Shane Thomson (Chair) The board met in early June with one of its first jobs to elect a Chairperson and Deputy Chairperson. The elected staff representative is Adrienne Simpson So as to help take any mystery out of what the role of a Boards of Trustees is in New Zealand let me explain what Governance and Management looks like. All elected, appointed and co-opted trustees, whether they are parent or staff representatives, come to the Board table entrusted to ensure effective governance despite the different perspectives they bring to Board discussions. Individuals are neither advocates nor delegates with sectional interests but work for positive outcomes for all concerned. The Board of Trustees key areas of contribution are to: • Set and, as needed, modify the vision, mission and values • Protect the special character of the school • Ensure a sensible and feasible Strategic Plan • Approve and monitor the Annual Plans • Develop and review the general policy direction • Monitor and evaluate student learning outcomes • Appoint, assess the performance of and nurture the Principal • Act as good employers

• Provide financial stewardship • Oversee, conserve and enhance the resource base • Approve major policies and programme initiatives • Manage risk • Build a broad base of community support • Exercise governance in a way that fulfills the intent of the Treaty of Waitangi by valuing and reflecting New Zealand’s dual cultural heritage This means that the Board delegates all authority and accountability for the day-today operational organisation of the school to the Principal and these delegations are reflected in the Board’s operational policies. As Woodend School also has a strong reputation for distributed leadership Woodend staff are fully engaged in establishing purpose and school wide consistency of management decisions. THE MAIN ROAD CARPARK This carpark due to its narrow entrance, the business of the Main North Road and its design with no footpath is a health and safety risk so we are closing it as a drop off/pick up and pedestrian walkway From today this carpark is for staff, service

and vehicles displaying disabled signs only. Drop off and pickups are to be on School Road and or Rangiora Woodend Road. Pedestrian entrances are to be through the gates on the Main Road, School Road, the Woodend Rec, the Rangiora Woodend Road car park and Owen Stalker Park. The change is needed as we have had an increase in students nearly being hit by other cars backing and vehicles trying to enter and leave the entrance way at the same time creating a traffic jam on the Main Road. Please help all students, staff and parents to Keep Safe and Feel Safe. Please mark your calendar now with our famous school fair on Sunday 11 September on the Rec. Woodend Combined Probus Club

Our July Mini-Speaker was a club member who told us of her recent visit to Kaikoura for a Whale Watch tour. Whale Watch was founded in 1987 and has become a huge success story. Many people are employed in the running of this venture which has won many top tourist awards. The trip aboard a modern comfortable catamaran started with the introduction of Captain Jimmy and the crew, followed by a Maori welcome by the tour guide. The guide spoke at some length about sea sickness and a crew member gave out bags (and collected them!) as they journeyed to the place where the Sperm Whales are usually spotted. The guide said that it was fortunate that at Kaikoura the edge of the continental shelf is so close to land since the sperm whales need deep water in order to dive for squid, which is their preferred food. The Giant Sperm Whale is the 4th largest of all the great whales and males can attain a length of up to 20 m and weigh up to 60 tonnes. The sperm whale is the deepest diving mammal, diving for over 2 hours down to over 3000 m. Our speaker gave us a well-observed commentary of her trip and said that she was very lucky indeed to have seen 3 sperm whales. She would recommend the 2 hour tour to anyone as it was so awesome.

Our Main Speaker last month was local identity and historian John Harris, who is a regular contributor to the Woodpecker as “Harry”. He spoke to us about the naming of streets in the local sub-divisions and of his current involvement with names for the new Petries development. In days gone by the streets in Woodend were designated first of all by the Roads Board and then by the County Council to be named after early settlers. There were of course exceptions such as Parsonage Rd, so named because the Parsonage was at the very end. Page 12 THE WOODPECKER AUGUST 2016

Judsons Road was named after Harry’s great-grandparents William and Sarah Judson who came out on the Clontarf in 1860. Harry had worked with Consultants on street names for Pegasus and proposed a “Mary Ellen Drive” and eventually a “Mary Ellen Street” was agreed to. Harry said that Mary Ellen was a lady “before her time” - she was the first woman member of the North Canterbury Power Board and even sat a “Linesman’s Ticket” to ensure she understood the technicalities under discussion! Also in Pegasus is “Barnes Street”, named for Alan Barnes, the first Woodend serviceman to be killed in WW2. Harry provided many examples of folk deserving of commemoration in road names, including children fostered out to Woodend people from Burnham Industrial School. He stressed the importance of retaining the history and heritage of the area. Harry concluded his talk with some recollections of the ups and downs of running the Woodend Boys Club. Some 70 Club members and guests enjoyed a coach ride out to the Springston Hotel for a hearty mid-winter dinner. A great variety of festive hats were worn with prizes awarded in 3 categories. A very successful raffle was held, making it all a very enjoyable occasion.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR To the Editor, Dear Madam, In 50 years of freelance writing, both professional and amateur, I have been known to rattle a few cages. However the reaction to my article in the May issue defies all expectations and one is left reverting to the old bard, Shakespeare. In Act 3, scene 2 of ‘Hamlet’ there is a little bit of iambic pentameter spoken by Queen Gertrude, Hamlets mum, about some old sheila grizzling about murder and mayhem. She quotes “the lady doth protest too much methinks”. This figure of speech, often “bastardised” to suit the occasion, is used in various phrasings to convince others of some matter of which the opposite is true. Bots letter, Woodpecker July, gives over to much aeolistic references to school policies, board rules etc.etc. In my column I made 2 or 3 observations. Regardless of local school rules, policies or procedures etc. etc. the facts still remain. Our school doesn’t advertise publicly under its own logo forthcoming board elections or casual vacancies. Any member of the public is allowed to stand for these. If there is no public advertising how does that person know? Some of my Boys’ Club members have been taken away due to unresolved issues. That is fact. I think I could safely say the parents could vouch for this. Other B.O.T.s in the district ask the ‘next cab off the rank’ in the case of a casual vacancy arising. That is fact. The letter also states that staff vacancies adhere to rules set by the ministry. All appointments have to be ratified by the board. It goes on to say “not all appointments are required to be advertised in newspapers”. Fair enough, Page 14

but how does one know if one is getting the best candidate for the job? Personally I think that public ads for employment cover the employer from any hint of malversation, nepotism or venality, in short ‘jobs for the boys’. Probably the most baffling revelation to appear in this saga has to do with the front page of the fortnightly school newsletter dated 19th May, 2016. It starts “Dear Parents and Caregivers, “We read with interest this months edition of This Month with Harry in which mention was made of the election process for Woodend School. We act as Returning Officer for Woodend School” It goes on to state policies, procedures etc. etc. Further on it comments on my original thought that some votes may have been lost as I came last in the count. “I wish to assure Harry the process was fair and the final results were an indication of the school community wishes.” The statement finishes, Wayne Jamieson, Returning Officer, Woodend School. This gives rise, as it would to any layman, to the assumption that the article was written and signed by Wayne Jamieson, Returning Officer, Woodend School. Not wishing to make an ‘unfriend’ over this issue, I decided to seek an audience with Mr Jamieson regarding my article. At 10.15a.m. on Tuesday, June 18th, I, along with a colleague met Mr Jamieson at the Canterbury Education Services offices. It soon became apparent after a few minutes that all was not as it seemed. Mr Jamieson had not read my article in the ‘Woodpecker’ and when proffered a copy didn’t want to. No, he did not write the bit in the school newsletter. No, there had not been any written communication, either

letter or e-mail between himself and the school on the subject. Further questioning seemed to heighten his discomfort level at our presence and we were shown the door. There being no written communication between the school and Mr Jamieson, one can only assume that any dialogue, if any, was by telephone. Therefore one can only hazard a guess as to the accuracy of the information given to Mr Jamieson. Within a day or so of the appearance of the school newsletter, a copy of the very same ‘Woodpecker’ letter from Bot was emailed to parents and caregivers. In conclusion, and in reply to the statement, “this article has caused much distress amongst our students, staff, parents and the wider school community” I can only say what a load of meracious crap. I think our students, staff parents and the wider school community are made of sterner stuff. However I am prepared to accept there may be one or two who may bow to manipulative and dictatorial directives and obey accordingly. Finally I revert to Shakespeare and old Queen Gertrude. “The lady doth protest too much methinks.” Yours John C. Harris

WDC considering joining Woodend, Tuahiwi & Pegasus water supplies The Woodend, Tuahiwi and Pegasus communities currently source their water from the same location near Gladstone Park. The water is treated using different methods to remove manganese. The Council is now considering joining the water supplies, physically, and financially, and discontinuing chlorination of the Pegasus water supply. The Woodend and Tuahiwi water is treated using a biological filter. Chlorine is not required as part of the biological treatment. While the treatment process works well, some manganese build-up still occurs in the reticulation system, and occasionally this leads to some discolouration of the water. The Pegasus water is treated using chlorine and a filter to remove manganese. While the treatment process works well at removing manganese, the chlorine can have a strong taste at times, and occasionally this leads to variations in taste and odour from the supply. This proposal involves: • Joining the Woodend (including Tuahiwi) and Pegasus water supply schemes, physically and financially

• Treating all Woodend and Tuahiwi water at the Pegasus water treatment plant • Ceasing chlorination of the Pegasus water supply • Joining Woodend, Tuahiwi and Pegasus reticulation with a new pipe along Main North Road and Pegasus Boulevard • Potentially connecting the Bramleys Road new source well directly into the network in the future. If it is decided to join the schemes the WDC believe this will increase the resilience of the three communities to natural disasters by providing combined backup water sources, emergency storage and headwork sites. Joining the schemes also means the wider ratepayer base will share the long term cost of renewals, treatment upgrades, resilience and maintenance. This Month with Harry Recently I was asked to submit a few names of early settlers for street names for the new 2 roads (Petries) subdivision. In the early 1970s, the then Rangiora County Council passed a resolution that the street names in the impending Woodend subdivisions be called after early settlers. Things went well for a while but the wheels fell off with names like Lacy Gates, Greenwood, The Stables etc. My list included early locals such as Benjes after the Benjes brothers from Germany. They were ‘sugar bakers’ or confectioners who had a shop on the corner of Petries and the main road. Across the road Alfred Catchpole, a bootmaker had his shop which incidentally is still standing to this day. I also submitted Jill Creamer and with a bit of luck may get a park or reserve. Others included Luisetti, Hazelhurst and Coulter, all Burnham children who in some way or another added to Woodends history. However any effort to preserve the history and heritage of this village has hit a brick wall when one sees the suggested road names for stage one of the Ravenswood development. We are likely to get a Bob Robertson Memorial Drive after the developer (deceased). Tara Crescent after a sheep station near John Ravens station. Tara was on the other side of Cust and no where near John Ravens holding. A Woodford street who according to the reason for being chosen was a pioneer flourmiller. Richard Woodford, a resident and one time councillor of Kaiapoi built the first flour mill at Ohoka. Nothing to do with Woodend at all. There will be a Godley Place after John Robert Godley, one time agent for the Canterbury Association and probably had very little direct dealings with Woodend. Priests Lane is another name suggested simply because John Raven was an Anglican priest although history books Page 26

suggest he was a vicar. We are going to get a Shipton Avenue after one, according to the reason for selection, Ingram Shipton who took over a pastoral run near Raven. There is no such person recorded as being in or near Woodend. I can only assume it is supposed to be Ingram Shrimpton from early Waikuku. There will be a Minerva Crescent, the ‘Minerva’ was the boat John Raven came to New Zealand on. Other suggestions included Lilburne and Kesteven, supposedly early settlers in the area. Andrew Lilburne grazed stock in the upper Ashley region while Thomas Kesteven owned a large block on the banks of the Waimakariri near the gorge. Both men no where near Woodend ever. Another two submitted were Rhodes and Wilkin. George Rhodes and Robert Wilkin owned a grazing block at Carleton between Cust and Oxford. Once again hardly Woodend. It is to be hoped that the members of the Woodend Ashley community board revisit these daft suggestions and sanity prevails. This is not what our forefathers envisaged for our town. At the beginning of July, I had my 70th birthday. The mighty three score and ten. It is intended that celebrations will last for the next twelve months and started during the holidays with a couple of activity days with the Boys’ Club. On Thursday 14th and 21st we had a day long session doing a bit of clay target and rifle shooting in the morning and some motorbike and go cart riding in the afternoon. Sunday the 17th saw 36 boys assemble at Setra Park for Camp Mothers birthday shout. They were told to watch out for a large mobile ferris wheel coming from Waikuku. However it didn’t turn up but a helicopter landed in the paddock beside us so we all went for a ride in it around Woodend and Pegasus instead. And we put these special

headphone things on so we could talk to each other and Russell the pilot. It was real neat. A truly memorable day. J.H.

Following on from the great fun our youth group had at their June sleepover, they had a disco on the 10th July. It was a great night, with DJS, dance competitions and face painting. In addition to having fun, they were fundraising towards the cost of a World Vision goat, which they hope to purchase at the end of the year. Our church held an evening Taize service this month, in addition to our regular 9.30 am and 4.30 pm services. It was a wonderful time of quiet reflection and prayer, an oasis in our busy lives. Also our 9.30 service on the 31st July was a combined service with our partners from Amberley parish, this time it was held in Amberley at Holy Innocents church. Last month we mentioned we were planning a combined services trip to Weka Pass on the steam train. Sadly we have had to postpone this, however we haven’t given up the idea. When we have a new date, we will let you know. Two study groups will be running through August and into September. The first is a Discipleship Group Study for members of the 4.30 congregation, running on Wednesday evenings, which began at the end of July. The second, a Grace Group Study series, begins in August and will take place either on Wednesday evenings or Thursday afternoons, depending on demand. The Mainly Music sessions have begun again, from 10 am until midday on Wednesdays. We do have spaces available Page 28

at present, so if you think you and your preschooler might enjoy the sessions, why not come along and try it out. It’s a great chance to socialise for both you and your child, with music, food and fun. The launch for Operation Christmas Child also comes in August and we are planning to take part in this great initiative again this year. In partnership with Amberley parish, we managed to provide 60 boxes of gifts last year and would love to equal or exceed that total in 2016. We’d love to see you at one of our services this month, so if you’d like to join us, do come along. In the meantime, enjoy the lighter evenings!
