Want to Make a Difference?

Talk to a woman or better yet, talk to 100 of them and make it happen in less than an hour! It started with a need for baby beds. It gave birth to a group of outstanding women who – in approximately one hour - raised $10,000 to purchase 300 baby cribs for new mothers with limited finances. 100 Women Who Care is the brainchild of Karen Dunigan of Jackson, Michigan. She was determined to find a way to buy these much needed cribs for the local non-profit who takes care of these new mothers in her community. “I knew I could help”, says Karen. “I knew I could raise the money, but, I was tired, I didn’t want to organize a fundraiser and have meetings and everything that goes with it. I just didn’t have the time. I needed to figure out how to raise sufficient funds quickly and easily. I continued to work on this idea, with friends, and knew that, with my friends’ help, we had to know at least 100 women in the community who could afford to write a check for $100.00 each to reach the goal of $10,000." Their first meeting was in November 2006. The ladies arrived, heard her story and wrote their checks. They finished in one-hour, raising $12,800 – far exceeding the goal and expectations! Since that meeting they have raised tens of thousands of dollars and have changed the name to 100(+) Women Who Care. Today their chapter has over 275 members and the word has spread how effective this format is with chapters now in surrounding states.

community. The organization must be a non-profit entity recognized as a 501 (c) (3) and must have been previously established (no startups). No national or international charities, programs, or organizations will be considered as the purpose is for the contributions to stay 100% in the community. How is the organization that receives the donation chosen? A member who has filled out a Charitable Organization Fact Sheet can put the name of a local organization into the hat for a random drawing at the meeting. The organizers of the meeting will collect the names and at random, three organizations will be selected from the hat. The members who wrote down the chosen names will be asked to come up and give a short five minute presentation as to why their chosen organization should receive the donation. Immediately following, each Member will vote by ballot. Majority rules. Even if your choice does not win, all Members are responsible for writing a check to the winning organization. How long do the meetings last? Meetings are intended to be very short, generally lasting approximately 45 minutes but no longer than 60 minutes. However, you may come to a meeting early or stay after in order to spend time socializing and getting to know other members.

100(+) Women Who Care are groups of women interested in supporting their communities. They come from all walks of life with varying financial backgrounds. As individuals they feel the pressure and challenge of having a meaningful impact, but as a group they know they have the ability to contribute to the growth of their communities in ways never thought possible! The mission is to reach out and help communities by finding at least 100 or more women to contribute $100 four times a year, ($40,000+ annually) either as individuals or teams, to local charitable organizations. The goal is to keep the focus local and have an impact that can be seen. THIS GROUP IS PERFECT FOR YOU IF:

Q&A

THANK YOU JOE!

Let me add my voice to the chorus of PSU fans who now mourn the loss of Joe Paterno. Many of us are looking for a sense of closure. We also begin to reflect on life in general and the lessons it provides and the ones we have learned. As a physician, my view may be different from yours. Over my practice lifetime I have seen many patients succumb to a variety of diseases, including, and tragically, lung cancer. When the first report of Coach Paternoʼs cancer was announced I was at the Philadelphia airport on my way back from a meeting and the Mirror found me and asked for some comments, which were published in an article the next day. The report of a “treatable lung cancer” gave hope, but my comments pointed out that “treatable” does not mean curable. I have been told that Coach Paternoʼs lung cancer was a so-called “small cell” lung cancer. The “treatable” comment most certainly referred to the fact that these tumors usually respond well to initial chemotherapy, but what was not said, for obvious reasons, is that these tumors spread early to other areas of the body (we call this metastasizing), and they all relapse. Like most lung cancers, small cell tumors may not cause early symptoms, which delay the diagnosis. The early spread outside the lung reduces the prognosis significantly. Like most of you, I did not know Coach Paterno personally. Nothing has been said of his personal habits. Small cell tumors of the lung occur almost exclusively in smokers and are most common in heavy smokers. In recent articles, I have written about lung cancer prevention and diagnosis. 47 million Americans still smoke, resulting in 443,000 preventable deaths every year, of which 50,000 are non-smokers exposed to second-hand smoke. Beyond prevention is the need for early diagnosis. Patients who have smoked for thirty years or more and who are 55 years-of-age or older, can reduce the mortality rate due to lung cancer by 20% when enrolled in an early detection program. Since the publication of this data, from a large national study, the Lung Disease Center of Central Pennsylvania has initiated an Early Detection Program where the basic tool is a painless annual CT scan of the chest. More information can be found on our website below, or by calling our office. Coach Paterno is leaving a legacy which will endure on many levels. Let part of this legacy lead us to a healthier future with smoking cessation and the early detection of lung cancer.

Breathe Magazine, a new healthy living publication, is published by Dr. George M. Zlupko and the Lung Disease Center of Central Pennsylvania. This new publication includes breaking news on medical advances in treating respiratory disease, clinical research trials, sleep studies, and treatments taking place at the Lung Disease Center of Central Pennsylvania. Informative articles explain an in-house high risk management program, which includes CT scanning and advanced antibody testing, taking place at the Lung Disease Center of Central Pennsylvania and improves the chances of early lung cancer detection with a significant increase in survival.

The reality that we cannot take the pain from one who grieves is conveyed in the following poem(author unknown.) No one can diminish the pain of losing a loved one but we can keep one another in our prayers. I Cannot Be I cannot be the candle When darkness fills your room I cannot be the rain That makes your flowers bloom I cannot be the wind That blows your ship to shore I cannot fight the battles That you can fight no more I cannot walk your path When you would like to stray But mine will be the hand You hold along the way. - unknown

Central Pennsylvania Regional Career Fair Brings Together Students, Community Members, and Employers By Deborah A. Benedetti

“The career fair offers many opportunities to test the waters, practice job interviewing, and network with employers,” Dr. Lasher said, offering these tips to prepare for the fair: • Visit the career fair website at http://careerfairs.psu.edu/CentralPA regularly to review the list of participating employers in the “Job Seekers” section. This site will be live in early April and will be updated daily. • Research the companies that interest you. Visit their websites, learn about job openings and requirements, and talk with people you know who work at the company. • Assess your education and skill sets. If you don’t have all the requirements for the job, consider enrolling in a professional certificate or associate degree program or taking a course or two specifically related to your area of interest. • Take advantage of the brief pre-fair session on how to make the most of the career fair, which will include general do’s and don’ts, as well as how to approach employers and make the best first impression. • Approach the career fair as an on-site interview. Do your homework and be able to ask at least one or two educated questions about the companies that interest you. Dress for success. Update your résumé and bring copies of it in a professional pad folio or notebook.

Pennsylvania’s unemployment rate is continuing to improve, dropping from a high of 8.8 percent in 2010 to 7.6 percent at the end of 2011. And more Pennsylvania companies are hiring.

Penn State adult learner Kathy Salloum is already making plans to attend the career fair. A single mother of a teenage daughter and son, Salloum would like to find a full-time position after she graduates with a degree in letters, arts, and sciences in May. “I want to test the waters at the fair and see how marketable I am and what positions are available. I know a Penn State degree will help me become more marketable.”

Central Pennsylvania residents who want to learn about job opportunities in this region are invited to attend the fifth annual Central Pennsylvania Regional Career Fair from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m., Monday, May 21, at The Penn Stater Conference Center Hotel in Innovation Park (Exit 74 off Route 220, between State College and Bellefonte).

Central Pennsylvania residents who are thinking about returning to school through Penn State can explore their areas of interest, career goals, and educational options with Dr. Lasher. Call 814-865-5403 for an appointment.

The career fair is designed for Penn State adult learners, other Penn State students, and local residents. Central Pennsylvania employers will be on hand to talk with participants about job and career opportunities in this area. Penn State Career Services partners with Penn State Continuing Education to sponsor the fair. You can watch a video about the career fair at: http://tinyurl.com/CareerFair-stand-out-and-shine.

Residents considering a return to school also can attend a Transitions: College and Career Prep program to refresh and strengthen their study skills and organizational abilities; improve reading comprehension; learn about doing research, college-level writing, and presentations; develop a personal educational plan; and increase their technology skills.

“If you are a Penn State student, alum, or community member who wants to live and work in central Pennsylvania, are thinking about advancing your career, or are considering a new career, this is an excellent opportunity for you to explore those options and connect with solid local employers,” said Penn State Career Counselor Liz Lasher, Ph.D., LPC.

More information about the career fair is available at: http://careerfairs.psu.edu/CentralPA.

The career fair will attract employers from many businesses and industries, including education, engineering, financial services, government, health care, human services, manufacturing, research and development, and telecommunications. U.Ed.OUT 12-0526/12-CE-0359alm/jms/sss

Add a Splash of Tangerine to Your Landscape!

Unlike many softer colors, orange holds its own in bright sunlight and attracts hummingbirds and butterflies. Orange has also been shown to increase appetite and promote social interaction so it’s a great color to add to your patio or outdoor dining areas. The key to adding orange to your landscape is to use it sparring – a little splash goes a long way. A strategically placed accent in this unexpected color works wonders when you want to highlight a section of your landscape. Glazed pottery is a great way to add a little Tangerine Tango to your landscape without making a huge commitment. Large outdoor planters are great eye-catching accents and are one of the first things guests notice about a landscape. Planters can be easily rotated from year to year, or even between seasons, to change the look of your home. Stop by Wheatfield Nursery to pick up spring accessories for your landscape. If Tangerine Tango isn’t your thing, our planters come in a wide range of colors – from Atomic Yellow and Lime Green to Caribbean Blue and Deep Purple!

Safe, Effective and Lasting Weight Loss Most of what you have been told or been led to believe about weight loss simply is not true for the majority of people. The notion that eating right and exercising is all that you have to do leaves many people frustrated and overweight. We all know someone who can eat whatever they want, never exercise and yet they remain skinny as a rail. We also all know someone who can follow their current diet to the letter, works out for hours on end yet still has a very difficult time losing weight and keeping it off. Long term, sustainable weight loss has to do with your metabolism. What controls your metabolism? Hormones. We have five hormones that cause us to burn fat and three that cause us to store fat. To lose weight and keep it off we need to maximize our fat burning hormones and control our fat storing hormones. Counting calories or points only works to a certain extent. When we restrict our calories, our body uses carbohydrates first, then protein or muscle and lastly our nonessential toxin-storing fat for energy. This is the fat associated with obesity. What if we could move our non-essential fat stores to the front of the line? We can! We successfully use behavior and dietary modification, nutrition and homeopathy to help control appetite, stabilize blood sugar levels, boost your metabolism and burn fat.

Today’s Boomers Downsize Homes, but Upsize the Amenities (ARA) - Say goodbye to the McMansion. According to a leading real estate website, Trulia. com, 2010 was officially the year that homes over 3,200 square feet ended their dominance and appeal. But don’t think that downsizing means downgrading. In fact, homeowners are looking to upsize their amenities to help them enjoy every inch of their homes. And, while many different generations are following this trend, Boomers are a unique group, looking to enjoy their smaller nest now that the kids have flown the coop - yet ensure that their homes are filled with the many amenities they’ll require for their golden years.

their needs, and according to findings from the Research Institute for Cooking and Kitchen Intelligence, boomers are looking for kitchens with amenities that will assist with entertaining. These upgrades may include cooktops with special-purpose features, such as a built-in grill or wok; commercial or professional-grade appliances; a built-in coffee pot connected directly to plumbing or an oven that dramatically reduces cooking times without microwaves.

Bedrooms that Sizzle

Mature adults still know how to spice up their bedroom with hot amenities, including fireplaces, heated mattress pads and large-capacity warming cabinets for blankets, robes, towels and clothing. Convenience-based bedroom trends include a laundry room off of the master suite, remote-controlled window treatments and voice controlled lighting and electronics, making your mature boudoir much more magical than your childhood bedroom.

Anything but Basic Baths

While they may purchase a smaller floor plan, mature adults are looking for ways to turn ordinary rooms into extraordinarily indulgent experiences. In the bath, that means the ultimate spa experience - from elaborate showers to heated floors and towel warmers. But when it comes to the bathroom, it’s just as important to keep it safe. Luckily, safe can also equate to stylish. Try installing comfortable seating for the shower with a beautiful fold-down shower seat made of teak and aluminum; or updating common bath accessories such as a paper holder, towel bar or shelf with a new integrated version that combines each accessory with a grab bar for added safety. “Our goal is to make every bath a safe bath. And, for savvy homeowners looking to incorporate safety at any age, it’s essential we provide products to meet their safety and style requirements,” says Laurie Birko, Moen Home Care brand manager.

The Greater Outdoors

No-mow lawns have sprouted up as a time-, water-, fuel- and money-saving alternative to the traditional lawn. For homeowners in colder climates who are tired of the hassles and hazards of snow removal, driveway heating systems are an ideal amenity. Heat is delivered with either electric cable (electric systems) or by hot water pumped through plastic tubing (hydronic systems) compacted in the surface. Driveway heating also helps reduce injuries due to slips and falls, and possibly liability due to such accidents. Regardless of the size of your home, whether you build new or buy used, filling your empty nest with hot amenities will help to make your golden years as good as gold. For more information about Moen Home Care bath safety products, visit www.moen.com.

The Sleep Center at Lewistown Hospital

Dreaming... of a Good Night’s rest Warning Signs of Sleep Apnea

The Sleep Center at Lewistown Hospital provides consultations, testing, and treatment for a variety of sleep disorders. Sleep Apnea, Narcolepsy, Restless Leg Syndrome, and Insomnia are some of the conditions that are diagnosed and managed by our Board Certified Sleep Specialist, Jose’ R. Acosta, MD, FCCP. As the only nationally accredited Sleep Center in the area, you can be sure your care will meet the high standards of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.

Jose’ R. Acosta, MD, FCCP

What should I do if I suspect I have a sleep disorder?

You normally feel tired even after a full night of sleep.

The first step is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Acosta. During this initial office visit, he will review your symptoms, medical history, and sleep history to determine what testing, if any, may be appropriate.

You snore loudly and frequently.

I need to have an overnight sleep study. What is that?

Your high blood pressure is difficult to control, even with medication.

You wake up with a dry mouth, sore throat, or morning headache.

An overnight sleep study (polysomnogram) is a painless test during which a patient spends the night sleeping in a private bedroom while his/her breathing patterns, heart rate/rhythm, blood oxygen level, and sleep patterns are monitored and recorded by our registered Sleep Technologists in a nearby room. The results of this test are typically used to diagnose/rule out Sleep Apnea, a condition where a person stops breathing repeatedly during sleep.

You experience heartburn or excessive perspiration during sleep. You have trouble concentrating or have become more forgetful. You fall asleep while reading, watching TV, or driving.

What sorts of treatments are available for sleep disorders? Depending on the condition, some of the prescribed treatments may include medications, medical equipment, surgery, or lifestyle modification. Sleep Apnea, for example, often responds well to CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) therapy, a type of medical device. Insomnia, Narcolepsy, and Restless Leg Syndrome are often treated with a combination of medications and lifestyle modifications. All of these treatments can be ordered and managed through the Sleep Center.

For more information on Sleep Center at Lewistown Hospital

I want to be evaluated. What’s the next step?

Breast Imaging Specialist Helps with Early Detection As a radiologist specializing in breast imaging, Dr. Hanae Bahr has found her dream job at Susquehanna Health’s Kathryn Candor Lundy Breast Health Center at Divine Providence Hospital. “This is the love of my life; this is what I do best,” says Dr. Bahr. “This” is finding the slightest irregularity in breast mammograms and ultrasounds, giving women the best chance in detecting and treating breast cancer. She has honed her skills to find very subtle indications of breast cancer by specializing in breast imaging – viewing up to 120 mammograms a day. Additionally, she recently completed a breast imaging fellowship at the University of Maryland to stay current with the latest innovations. Dr. Bahr is passionate about her work, reading every image as if it is for her mother or her sister. Because her office is at the Breast Center, she can immediately request additional or specialized views of a patient’s breast or, if necessary, an ultrasound for further analysis. “Having a designated radiologist who is a breast specialist on-site gives everyone an advantage toward detecting and beginning treatment of breast cancer at its earliest stages,” says Dr. Timothy Pagana, Medical Director of the breast center. “Dr. Bahr also improves our service by eliminating wait time and return visits for our patients. Working behind the scenes, she ensures optimum breast views and makes it possible to provide follow-up imaging or a biopsy during one visit.” Dr. Bahr’s original radiology fellowship in 1986 focused on whole body imaging and involved extensive use of ultrasound technology. Her experience in this field is a perfect complement to breast health where ultrasound is being used increasingly for women with dense breasts. “This is a very special place for breast health care. There is a rare combination of excellent caregivers and technicians who really care about the patients and I am so pleased to be a part of it,” says Dr. Bahr. Take advantage of the area’s most comprehensive approach to breast health care. Call Susquehanna Health’s Kathryn Candor Lundy Breast Health Center today to schedule your mammogram at 570-320-7619. Planning for Disaster . . . Don’t Plan Backwards By Samantha K. Wolfe, Esquire I had never heard of a sump pump before moving to the Susquehanna Valley. In fact, when I was viewing the house I eventually purchased, I had to ask my realtor what the contraption was in the garage. She explained to me that the purpose of a sump pump is to pump any excess water from my house if it should flood. She proceeded to reassure me that although flooding happens in the Susquehanna Valley, because I live on a hill, I should never need to use it. That was before September of 2011.

Mr. Mortensen’s strategy was flawed. He wasn’t planning ahead for the disaster. He was standing in the middle of the disaster sopping up the water with a water resistant towel, trying to plan backwards. Sump pumps only work if installed before the flood hits. Likewise, asset protection trusts only work if implemented before creditor issues exist. The lesson to take away from this case is to plan ahead for disaster. If you desire to preserve your legacy and provide for your future generations, then act as if you know the floods will eventually come and you will need a sump pump to protect your assets. Consider asset preservation techniques well before the disaster. Sump pumps are installed for a reason. Asset preservation is done for a reason. Plan ahead for the disaster; don’t plan backwards. You never know when the next flood may come.

That week in September when we had the horrendous flooding in the area, I arrived home from work earlier than usual, and as soon as I pulled into my garage, I heard something that sounded like running water. It took me a few seconds to realize what was making the noise. It was my sump pump. I learned very quickly the importance of a sump pump. The way I see it there are two ways to view someone who decides to install a sump pump in his or her home: (1) the person is paranoid and overprotective, or (2) the person is planning ahead for disaster. Based upon my experience, I would argue that whoever installs a sump pump knows what he or she is doing. You can’t plan backwards. You can’t wait for the disaster to occur before you take action. Similarly, the Alaska case, Battley v. Mortensen, Adv. D.Alaska, No. A09-90036-DMD (2011), reinforces this thought: Plan ahead for disaster; don’t plan backwards. In this case, Thomas Mortensen executed a trust in order to protect his assets, and he transferred assets to his trust without giving thought to maintaining ownership of assets outside the trust to sustain his daily living. Furthermore, Mr. Mortensen was in the midst of recovering from the financial devastation of a divorce and dealing with depleting financial resources and continually increasing debt. Vision Problems, ADHD, and the Homework War Vision Problem Checklist

Frustration with reading. Homework that takes forever. Skipping words or lines, leaning close to books, fatigue with reading, trouble copying from a board, or letter reversals past age 9. These are common symptoms of a functional vision problem. Difficulty coordinating and focusing the eyes at close range can cause text to blur, shimmer, or float, causing loss of place in text or trouble with comprehension. Children rarely report vision problems, however, possibly because there is no reference point. According to experts, convergence insufficiency (CI) may affect roughly 5% of the school-age population. The problem is easy to miss, though, since most kids with CI have healthy eyes and 20/20 eyesight. A medical eye examination may miss a functional vision problem. The symptoms of CI overlap with those of ADHD. With CI, however, problems occur mostly with sustained near visual tasks such as reading. Homework can become a nightly battle. Poor behavior is sometimes a way to distract attention from academic failure. What can be done about functional vision problems? Sometimes subtle glasses prescriptions can help. Other times, programmed therapy is needed. Dr. Marcus Myers is an optometrist with residency certification in Vision Therapy & Rehabilitation. He practices in Muncy, PA at the Vision & Learning Center. For more information, visit www.pavisionlearningcenter.com or call 570-546-4885.

“Many factors can mimic attention-related problems. This includes functional vision problems. Parents are usually puzzled, as they often say that the vision has been tested numerous times. However, most visual evaluations do not check for things such as eye teaming. A child may still have problems even if they have “20/20” vision. Treatment for sensory issues may result in overall improvements in a child’s behavior and emotional adjustment, showing the extensive negative impact undetected visual problems could have.” ~Dr. Christie Seiler, neuropsychologist, Williamsport “(Our son) would have meltdowns because he was having a hard time reading. He is a very fluent reader now and he doesn’t fidget anymore. Homework is a breeze. It’s not screaming. It’s not yelling. Having Your Own Energy Crisis? People need energy! Statistics show that nearly 50% of all Americans suffer from low energy. The other 50% were too tired to answer the survey! How well you live depends upon how well your adrenal glands function. They are the “stress handling” glands. The adrenal glands produce a variety of hormones which are released directly into the bloodstream, where they are carried to virtually all the cells of the body. Our fast- paced, stressful lifestyle sets us up for adrenal fatigue. If the stressors are extreme for long periods of time, the effects becomes chronic. Without adequate rest and nutrition to replenish the depleted vitamin and mineral stores, the adrenal stress just gets worse and the result is unrelenting fatigue. In addition, eating a lot of processed, convenient, junk food that robs the body of vital energy, stresses the adrenal glands even more. Eating the typical American diet over time puts you in a prolonged stress response which causes the thyroid to slow its function. If you answer “yes” to any of the following conditions you may have Adrenal Fatigue. Need sodas or coffee to keep you going? • Can’t bounce back from illness or stress? Feeling run down and stressed? • Decreased sex drive? Having trouble getting up in the morning? • Crave salty or sweet snacks? Struggling to keep up with daily demands? • Not having fun anymore? Have suffered from bronchitis or pneumonia more than once? Stress and High-Cortisol Levels The adrenal glands normally secrete hormones in a cycle. Under prolonged stress, our adrenal glands secrete more of the hormone cortisol. High levels of cortisone can cause sleep disturbances. Millions of Americans unnecessarily live with Adrenal Fatigue. At Optimal Wellness I can perform a nutritional exam that includes specific tests for adrenal function. One must get back to eating whole foods, and eliminate the convenience foods with all their chemicals. Whole natural foods and food supplements (if properly processed) are enzymatic and alive. Human-made (synthetic) or separated (fractionated) supplements are dead chemicals. Ingestion of lifeless chemicals, which the body may treat as toxic, and which can cause deficiencies, imbalances, or other adverse reactions, will not really build health. Human health requires live bioavailable supplements that are readily accepted and used for maintenance, repair, energy, and function. Does the body know the difference? Absolutely! The Standard Process supplements I use are organic whole-food concentrates provided to upgrade the quality of your diet in order to support normal physiology and biochemistry. I do not diagnose or treat disease. I provide superior nutrition so the body can heal and function at higher levels. Lessons Learned By a Girl In The Beer BUSINESS: 2. Celebrate your successes, large and small – I need to work on this. If you’ve had a productive week, sleep in an extra hour. If you’ve had a great year, kick your heels up and treat yourself to something you’ve had your eye on. 3. Never forget your audience – In every decision, in every action. Your audience is who has delivered your success. 4. Build a support system – For each finger of your right hand you should be able to name someone to turn to when you need a pickme-up. This can include your business partner, your mother, even your dog. But if can’t think of five, you may want to reconsider your strategy. You cannot divide and conquer on your own. 5. Work and life balance – Keep your work worries at work and your personal baggage at home. Give yourself a schedule. From 9-5PM, keep all communication and thoughts work-based. Come 5:01PM close down your work email and head for ‘home mode.’ 6. Have confidence in yourself, your product and your future together – If you’re not 100 percent behind your product, why should your audience be? Make it count, every time. Share your enthusiasm and let your audience catch it like a fever. A really cool, harmless kind of fever ... but just as contagious. 7. Be a lady – Enjoy yourself responsibly and remember that no matter where you are, you are the face of your company. We all slip, but do your best to mind your manners. 8. Keep it local and support your neighbors –Love thy Mom n’ Pop Shop. For every small business you go out of your way to support, that may reciprocate into one new customer for you.

Nicole Courides, owner of Intercourse Brewing Company, sheds some light on the estrogen-heavy influences and successes of the beer industry In any given industry, there are at least a dozen female movers and shakers who are burying the framework of a onceexistent glass ceiling. The craft beer industry is no exception; it’s ripe with hundreds of brilliant, resilient and fearless women. (Yes, hundreds.) Some are brewers, some are marketing tycoons and others make a living educating the public about the goodness of beer. Kim Jordan, CEO, New Belgium Brewing Company (Fort Collins, CO), the third largest craft brewery in the country; Carol Stoudt, coowner and first brewmaster, Stoudt’s Brewing Company (Adamstown, PA); Teri Fahrendorf, seasoned 30-year-brewer and founder of the Pink Boots Society, a professional organization with more than 700 members; and Julia Herz, Craft Beer Program Director of the Brewers Association are just a handful of the industry’s pioneers. I am no big name, but I am honored to be a young woman in the beer industry. The Company: Affectionately named after the town in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, Intercourse Brewing Company was founded in 2008. Our products are named for towns surrounding Intercourse – Bareville Pilsner, Paradise Pale Ale, and my personal favorite Blue Ball Porter. Yes, this is real. We started in five counties of Pennsylvania. Now, we’re distributed in 60 percent of the home state, 90 percent of Ohio and nearly half of New Jersey. Our 2011 production sales number (480 barrels) more than doubled our 2010 report (220 barrels). We are a contract brewing company. We pay a host-brewery to produce and bottle our product and then we handle the distributing, marketing and sales. In the future, I’d love to establish a physical location for people to visit, and I can’t wait to see our beer available on draft (hopefully by the time you read this article). I look forward to the day I can proudly say our product is widely available throughout the US and that Intercourse is not just a cool name, but also a great brand that’s earned its merit. Lessons Learned: There’s a vault of embarrassing stories, great humiliations and insight, and I’m eager for the lessons of the future. In the meantime, here are some lessons I’ve learned: 1. Go hard or go home – You cannot expect results without putting the train on the tracks. March / April 2012

“May your spirit be light and may you always enjoy Intercourse (beer).” Cheers to the successes of the future! Courides received her BA in Journalism/PR from Rider University in 2009 and is a member of the Brewers Association, Pink Boots Society, and Brewers of PA.

Real Estate

Realty Reality Reflecting on the real estate market to better understand what may be ahead I couldn’t help but think of the phrase “back to the future”. The past decade in real estate has been an anomaly with easy money, lax regulation, and the development of real estate as a short term investment strategy even for the average person. After some necessary corrections we are now in a real estate market that is similar to what it used to be. The purchase of a home is now more of a long term investment for most people.

increased demand, as seen by positive figures lately, both locally and nationally. That said, sellers will have to be more competitive. Forethought and planning are the keys for success. Consultation with Realtors, stagers and contractors are all good ideas and should happen well before putting a property on the market. In some cases incentives may be necessary to “sweeten the pot”. Buyers are not just looking for a cheap price but a quality product. Repairs and some renovations before marketing can go a long way towards a successful sale.

What does this mean for buyers and sellers? We have mixed inventories, more demanding lending practices and other various other factors that make real estate something that requires knowledgeable help from professionals in a number of areas to understand the nuances of financing, local markets and meeting your specific needs.

To maximize your satisfaction in any real estate transaction talk to your favorite Realtor before making any major decision. Stay tuned for Scot's next article on how to add value to your home. For buyers, it doesn’t get much better than this. Rates are low, inventories are full and sellers are often willing to work with buyers. The tricky part is getting financing. We have returned to the days of needing a reasonable down payment and a good credit history. Often the available mortgages will also require more verification of funds and income than what you may be used to, but if you have the ability to do so buying right now is a smart thing to do.

For sellers, it isn’t all bad. Buyers are re-entering the market which has

Cookies with Flair at the Café

by Kim Kowalczyk

S

pringerle cookies are dense cake-like, European cookies — crisp on the outside and chewy on the inside, and perfect for sharing with a cup of tea or coffee. They are usually molded individually or the design is rolled into the dough with a specialty rolling pin. They’ve become a favorite at the café, flavored with lemon, orange or anise oils and citrus zest. I first discovered these cookies when Reverend Keith Koch brought me a sample; it was love at first bite. The following recipe came with my fancy rolling pin, which I found online at House on the Hill. If you’d like to try your hand at these, search YouTube for some online tutorials. To ensure that your cookies retain their design, I suggest drying them for 24 hours. Baking them at a low oven temperature also helps preserve the image.

Springerle Cookies ½ teaspoon baker’s ammonia (hartshorn) 2 Tablespoons milk 6 large eggs, room temperature 6 cups confectioner’s sugar (1-1/2#) ½ cup unsalted butter, softened but not melted ½ teaspoon salt ½–¾ teaspoon flavor oil 2 lb. box of sifted cake flour Zest from one orange, lemon, or lime More flour or confectioner’s sugar as needed for rolling Dissolve hartshorn in milk and set aside for 30–60 minutes. Using your electric stand mixer, beat eggs until thick and lemon-colored (about 20 minutes). Slowly beat in the confectioner’s sugar, then the softened butter. Add the hartshorn-milk mixture, salt, flavoring and citrus zest. Gradually beat in as much flour as you can with the mixer paddle then stir in the remainder of the flour to make a stiff dough. Turn on to a floured surface and knead in enough flour to make a good print (practice makes perfect!). Roll dough about 3/8” to ½”. Brush dough with confectioner’s sugar and roll design into the dough. Cut with a knife and transfer to parchment lined baking sheets. Dry for 24 hours. Bake at approximately 325 degrees. If cookies puff too much, reduce the oven temperature. Bake for about 10–15 minutes or until dry and the bottom just begins to turn golden. 2/13/2012 10:13:17 AM

INSIGHTS INTO HOW WOMEN SHOP If you are relying solely on demographics to define your target market, chances are you’re missing the mark. Today, more than ever, traditional demographic segmentation has become less and less relevant to marketers as a means to define business opportunities. Growing diversity and market fragmentation mean life stage is less important and lifestyles are more idiosyncratic. As a result, women’s buying behavior is more complex than ever. Retail analysts predict that by the year 2010, the consumer marketplace will be defined more than ever by shopping behavior and motivation rather than demographics. To help marketers stay at the forefront of women’s shopping behavior and motivation, Frank About Women conducted a groundbreaking segmentation study of women’s core shopping mindsets. Overall, we found that women fall into five distinct categories when approaching almost any shopping trip: • Zealot Shoppers (27%) relish all forms and formats of shopping. • Feel Good Shoppers (19%) view shopping as a self-indulgent escape. • Mission Shoppers (18%) are value-minded and seek convenient, efficient shopping experiences. • Butterfly Shoppers (26%) view shopping as a social event. • Anti-Shoppers (10%) approach shopping as a necessary evil.

Health

Restores Desired Figure and Confidence A new procedure, known as Mommy Make-over, is quickly gaining popularity among women longing to restore their bodies back to its pre-pregnancy shape. The most common patient is between 25 and 45 years of age, and has had one or more children. Body contouring, breast surgery and tummy tucks - alone or in combination - are key components of this post-pregnancy enhancement. “These patients basically want to recapture what their bodies looked like prior to their first pregnancy," explains Robert Louton MD, board certified plastic surgeon at Blair Plastic Surgery of Altoona and State College. “Usually, women come in after having several children. They often have stretched abdominal wall muscles and lax skin that hasn't bounced back as much as they'd like. Even with a lot of sit ups, these patients are unable to regain a nice flat abdomen.” A popular combination of procedures is a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty or mini abdominoplasty) along with breast surgery (breast augmentation, breast lift, or both). Liposuction and even labiaplasty can be part of the mix. “Before performing multiple procedures, I consider the patient's health and overall weight and body mass index”, continues Dr. Louton. “If the patient presents with factors contributing to a higher risk of complications, I will split up the procedures. Beauty

Styling for Your Face Shape So what’s a designer to do? First we’ll discuss what you like about your hair. Next , we’ll talk about changing what is changeable. Then we’ll discuss working with or at least accepting what is not changeable. Finally, I will sculpt a mutually agreed upon hair design to the precise shape of your head. If a design replicates the shape of your head it will naturally compliment your face shape. And life will be good.

I was just reading an article from my favorite on-line professional beauty magazine. It’s an article explaining the author’s take on cuts for specific face shapes. Like so many articles addressing face shape, the article falls short in many areas. There’s a good reason for this. Simply put, there are so many considerations that must be addressed when designing a hairstyle for an individual that a book, not an article is needed. Fortunately for the experienced hair designer you (the reader) have worked out all of your hair issues before I ever meet you. All I have to do is sit and listen to you talk about your hair, and see if there is anything I think I can add. Is your hair TRULY too thick or thin? Probably not! Is the growth direction in your front hairline REALLY hideous? No! Is your forehead ACTUALLY too high? Again no! Does your hair HONESTLY refuse to lay the same way on both sides of your head? Yes (with good reason)! And so on... Now, do you genuinely dislike these personal features? Obviously! And we haven’t even considered your face shape yet.

Anyone Can Visit Disney World! Hello! Are you thinking of a trip to Disney World? My name is Erin and I’m a travel consultant for a local travel agency in State College. Expedia Cruise Ship Centers, Nittany Valley has been locally owned by Paul Podwika for over 20 years. Our agency specializes in cruise, land, all-inclusive, group, Disney and destination wedding travel regardless of where you live. There are three Disney ‘experts’ (Sonia, Liz and me) in our office. We all work together to make your trip to Disney a life-long memory. Planning with ‘experts’ can and does make a world of difference. Disney has been a huge part of my life since I was three years old. My Dad won our first family vacation to Walt Disney World from the company he works for. I was three and my brother, Jared, was 6 months old when we experienced our first Disney vacation. Since our first trip, my parents took us on a week-long Disney vacation every two years. We have made it a family vacation tradition and at times traveling with up to 18-20 family members! To me, Disney World is my "happy place" and my getaway to leave work, modern day technology and schedules at home and enjoy quality time together. Over the years and many visits to Walt Disney World, I have been blessed with a lot of Disney knowledge from my experiences. While attending college for my bachelor’s degree in marketing, I interned through the Walt Disney College Program during my senior year. I interned in the vacation planning and marketing division at Walt Disney World for six months. I dealt with guests daily and helped with tickets, vacation planning and dining. Working with Disney guests each day was a learning experience and very rewarding. Some of the people I met while in Florida had such great stories that I won’t forget! So combine my years of love for Disney with the internship that I had at Disney, I feel I know some fantastic ins and outs to making your vacation a marvelous memory. If you feel you have challenges and want to know more about a Disney vacation…. I can help you plan the perfect Disney World or cruise vacation. Planning a Disney World or Disney cruise vacation can be overwhelming. There are many details that go into planning a perfect Disney vacation. Hearing

Questions You Should Ask Before Buying a Hearing Aid Who should I see about my hearing loss?

Can I handle putting the hearing aid in?

If you are having difficulties hearing, you should discuss the issues with your family physician. Your physician will direct you to an Audiologist for a hearing evaluation. Many insurance companies require a referral or prescription for the hearing test, Medicare and HMO’s included.

Your Audiologist will spend up to an hour with you teaching you how to insert and take the hearing aid out. During your 30-day trial, you should be seen two to four times to review all the information given to you during the initial fitting of the aid.

Does it come with a warranty?

Is my hearing loss permanent or severe enough to warrant wearing a hearing aid?

All hearing aids come with a warranty. Typically there are two different types of warranties: loss or damage and repair. Depending on the brand of hearing aid and Audiologist, you will have one to three years of warranty.

The Audiologist will explain your results in depth, clarifying whether the hearing loss is permanent or may require a visit to the Ear, Nose and Throat specialist for further examination. Should the hearing loss be severe enough to warrant the use of a hearing aid, the Audiologist will discuss your options. There are several different technology, price and style choices. For those not ready to make a decision about purchasing a hearing aid, the Audiologist will give patients educational material to take home.

What is the average life span of a hearing aid?

The typical life span of a hearing aid is five to seven years. Hearing aids can and will break down just like an automobile. Dr. Sandra Chamberlin, Au.D., CCC-A is an ASHA certified PA state licensed audiologist with over 19 years of experience. Education: B.S. Marywood College, 1989, M.S. Vanderbilt University,1991, Au.D. Pennsylvania College of Optometry, 2007

Will it restore my hearing to normal?

A hearing aid will help the hearing impaired person in many different situations; however, it will not restore the hearing to normal. Unlike glasses that restore vision to “20/20”, a hearing aid user will still have situations that prove difficult.

How much does a hearing aid cost?

The price of a hearing aid is typically determined by the circuit that is in it. Digital hearing aids offer three circuit choices: good; better; and best. The “best” circuit is the best choice for those who are in noisier environments or have poor speech understanding. The “good” circuit is appropriate for individuals who are typically in quite environments. There is a very large price range between the good circuit to the best circuit.

Williamsport Hearing Services The Hearing Experts

Do I wear the hearing aid everyday?

You will do best with a hearing aid if it is worn everyday, all day. It should be worn from they time you get up until the time you go to bed. There are certain situations in which the aid should not be worn. They include high noise environments, hunting, target shooting, lawn mowing, swimming and showering.

Does it take batteries?

You will need to replace the hearing aid battery every week. Batteries typically cost less than $1.00 each. It is cheaper to buy them in bulk than just a few at a time. The battery typically has a shelf life of four years.

Choosing the Right Rehabilitation is Key Patrick Meyer considered himself a healthy 24-year-old. Then one night while in his bedroom, out of nowhere, he had a seizure. “I remember lying on my bedroom floor, pounding my fist on the hardwood, hoping that my roommate downstairs would hear me and come help.” Thanks to quick responses by friends and emergency medical professionals, Pat was life-flighted to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh, where he had brain surgery to stop the bleeding and remove a blood clot. Pat’s family learned that his seizure was due to a brain hemorrhage; he had a condition called arteriovenous malformation, or AVM, of the brain. AVM is an abnormal connection between veins and arteries, and most people never have symptoms. A weakened area of the AVM can start to bleed, which is what happened to Patrick. After surgery, Pat was placed in a drug-induced coma to allow the brain to start healing. When he woke from the coma, he could recognize his parents, his brother and his girlfriend, but the brain hemorrhage left him paralyzed on the entire left side of his body. When it was time for rehabilitation, doctors at UPMC recommended HealthSouth Nittany Valley Rehabilitation Hospital in Pleasant Gap, where Pat stayed for five weeks as an inpatient. “I remember waking up in a HealthSouth patient room, with my left arm stuck in a flexed/ bent position,” says Pat. I was confused, I had no short-term memory, and I could not move my entire left side, including my face.” At HealthSouth, he started physical, occupational and speech therapy – up to three hours a day. While Pat does not remember his first day of therapy, he can tell the story, thanks to his family who looked on as he began his rehabilitation. “On my first day, I was in a wheelchair, and my neck was too weak to hold up my head. Physical Therapist Rob Haviland bent down and whispered something in my ear. Then he put a gait belt on me, lifted me up and walked me around the therapy gym. I wish that I had a video of what we looked like that day. What a great reminder that would be, of how far I have come.” Walking in physical therapy is one of Pat’s best memories of his rehabilitation at HealthSouth. “I was in a wheelchair for so long; walking around the gym with the physical therapists gave me a mission,” Pat explains. “I went from a walker to a four-point cane, and then to a single point cane. Physical therapists also worked with me so that I could climb stairs again.” In Occupational Therapy, Pat worked with his hands, practicing regular activities of daily living, which is an important part of a patient’s readiness to go home. Pat adds, “The nurses also seemed to know just how to work with me and my brain injury. I used to wear this thing on my left hand to keep it open, otherwise it would just close shut. It was hard to sleep with, and sometimes, in frustration, I would rip it off and throw it on the empty bed next to mine.” He laughs, “Beth Russell [certified rehabilitation registered nurse] used to say to me, ‘You’re young; you don’t want your hand to be that way for the rest of your life. Now let’s put it back on.’ She was caring, yet clear about what was important,” Pat explains. “I needed that to stay focused and motivated.” “I also went through a period, as an inpatient, when I would have bad dreams - night terrors - and they were actually memories of what really I read it in the Women’s Journal!

You may have lost weight and are wearing smaller sizes. Bring the items you no longer want or need to Clothes Mentor and you’ll receive cash on the spot for the items we wish to purchase. No appointment is necessary. “Eliminating some of the items in my closet made it easier for me to see what’s in there that I still want to wear,” said one happy shopper. “And it’s great to have a little extra runningaround money from the clothes I sold.”

Landscaping

Ready, Get Set, Garden! It’s easier than ever to grow a beautiful garden! There is so much information Create your own garden in 5 Easy Steps available through books, magazines and the internet that the mystery is almost

completely removed from this fun and relaxing hobby, even for the novice. One of the only mysteries that remains is why doesn’t everyone try it? Even when yard space is limited a garden is within reach. Window boxes give your home an instant, colorful cottage look. Container gardening provides a portable, compact and simple way to garden, and is great if you are limited to a balcony, deck or patio. Raised gardens are an excellent way to make gardening accessible to those with mobility challenges, bringing the garden surface is closer to the gardener. Raised gardens also provide great drainage, so if your area is extremely wet, or seems to be solid rock, this is a great solution. There’s no such thing as ‘no place to garden’! All you need to do is take that first step down the garden path.

By Melody Aumiller of Fox Hill Gardens

Step 1: Pick the place before the plant. For a first garden it’s best to start small and expand as you gain confidence and competence. Add curb appeal to your home and plan to install a few plants that will frame your front door, or bring charm to a bland lawn with a small flowering garden surrounding your light post or patio. Plant a patch of several herbs and veggies near your kitchen door, in a sunny spot, handy for snipping a few sprigs of rosemary or basil to enjoy with fresh, homegrown tomatoes! Step 2: Analyze the area. Now list important factors such as hours of sunlight your site receives, if it’s windy, average moisture levels and special challenges such as hungry deer and rabbits, rocky areas, road salt runoff or walnut trees. These factors can doom your gardening project unless you choose the right plants. The most important consideration is soil, which provides the conditions and nutrients plants need to thrive. Have a soil test done through the nearest Cooperative Extension office for a nominal fee. Go to the website extension.psu.edu/counties and click on your county to find the closest office. They’ll walk you through the process and advise you on how to act on the test results and make suggestions to improve your soil.

Mature Garden Just Planted

Step 3: Prepare for planting. Assemble the tools you will need, such as a shovel, trowel, rake, wheelbarrow, watering hose and gloves. If planting in your yard, make an outline of where to dig. If you use your garden hose for this, you can preview and adjust what it will look like without making permanent marks. For a pleasing shape, distinct curves or straight lines are generally best. Remove any plant material within this zone down to bare earth, including roots. Add a 3” or thicker layer of topsoil, composted manure or vegetation, or other soil amendments recommended in your soil test as needed. Dig the new garden area about 18” deep and mix well.

Warning: Gardening may become addictive! Though it’s simple to achieve great success with relatively little experience, this is a subject which can take a lifetime to master. To learn more, attend upcoming gardening workshops, informative talks by Master Gardeners, and offer to help experienced friends and neighbors with their projects. There may be perennials to share along with wisdom and advice, and the opportunity to cultivate great friendships!

Step 4: Peruse, plan, and purchase appropriate plants. Next, visit a local full service nursery like Fox Hill Gardens where plants are healthy and receive excellent care. Be sure to bring the list of growing conditions and challenges with you. Nursery tags indicate plant preferences for sun/shade, moisture, maximum size, etc. Get ideas and see what you like. Ask the friendly expert staff for advice on plant choices. You may want to return to your planting area, and look at it again to decide how many of each type of plant you’ll purchase when you return to the nursery. Keep in mind how big your selections will be at maturity. It’s important not to overcrowd them to avoid disease issues later.

Fox Hill Gardens is a local full service nursery and landscape business located in State College, PA. We carry a variety of unusual evergreens, Japanese maples, trees, shrubs and perennials, as well as seasonal annuals, hanging baskets, vegetables, herbs, fruiting plants and fruit trees. We specialize in shade, wildlife and native plants, and can help you choose plants for even the most difficult or challenging areas of your landscape. If you need to place a special order, request a consultation or design, or contact us for any reason, please call or e-mail and leave a message. Our friendly and expert sales staff return to the public sales area April 1st, and look forward to helping you find the perfect selections!

Fox Hill Gardens

Step 5: Place the plants. Arrange the plants while still in their pots until you are pleased with the design. Dig holes twice as wide as the pot, but no deeper. Gently remove a plant from its container, and loosen roots so they can spread outward. Place the root ball into the hole and fill with soil, pressing firmly, but don’t pack it down. Make sure to keep the soil level where it was when the plant was in the pot, or the stem will be subject to rot. Water thoroughly, encouraging deep root development, until the plant is established. Pull out all weeds by the roots as they appear. To retain moisture, suppress weeds and build organic material in the soil, mulch ornamental gardens with bark mulch for a crisp, professional look. Be sure to keep mulch a few inches away from the trunk or stem. March // April April 2012 2012 March

Going To Court – Tips For Your Court Hearing mom and dad are testifying. Always address the Court as “Your Honor.” Treat all courtroom personnel with respect and dignity as they are extensions of the Court. When inside the Courtroom: You must stand each time the Court commences or adjourns. Recording devices are not permitted in courtrooms as any transcripts of the court proceedings are performed by the official court reporter. Turn off your mobile phones. Remove any of your hats or sunglasses, unless for medical or religious reasons. Do not bring any food or drink into the courtroom. During the proceedings, it is important to remain calm. This is not the time for jokes as this is a serious matter. There are to be no outbursts of emotion and absolutely no yelling. There is to be no facial expressions that show disdain for what anyone is saying. During the proceedings, it is best to only talk to your lawyer quietly when no one else is talking. The lawyer cannot listen to both you and the witness at the same time. Use a pen and paper to communicate anything to your lawyer. Going to Court is difficult. If you are going to go through this difficult process, make sure you have a purpose and that you are maximizing your chances for success.

We try hard to work things out, but inevitably, there will come a time when the only way to resolve differences is to have a judge resolve the dispute. The most important thing for you to do is to:

Be prepared. Meet with your lawyer in advance of your hearing. If you are going to testify, know what questions he or she is going to ask. Know how you are going to answer these questions. For example, “I want primary custody” is not a helpful response. What is helpful is “these are the days that the children should be spending with me, and these are the days that the children will be spending with the other parent.” Know what areas the lawyer wants to bring to the court’s attention. Also, do not assume your lawyers knows as much as you. They most assuredly do not! Tell the lawyer what areas you think are important and discuss the matter. If your lawyer refuses to bring up what you believe to be an important matter, then you should consider a different lawyer. When testifying, you must be firm, confident and direct. Answers that begin with “I think” or “I believe” are not helpful to your case. Now is the time for you to tell the Judge what you know. Arrive at court: You should arrive at least 30 minutes early to give yourself plenty of time to find parking, get through courthouse security and to find the courtroom. If you have any problems finding the right courtroom, ask court staff. It is appropriate to bring a family member or friend (who is over the age of 18) to sit with you and provide support. However, your support person cannot sit with you at the table with your lawyer and cannot speak on your behalf. Respect the court: While there are no rules about what to wear in court, court is a formal place and you should dress accordingly. Wear something that respects the court but something that you are also comfortable wearing. Usually this is something that is both neat and conservative. For women, this usually means, no high heel shoes, no short skirts, and limit makeup and jewelry. If you are to cry in court, you do not want your makeup to ‘run.’ You want the judge to remember you, not your clothing. Generally, courts are not appropriate places for children. Please make other arrangements for your child’s care when you come to court. The only exception to this is if the child is going to testify. And if the child is going to testify, make sure that your child is not in the courtroom when I read it in the Women’s Journal!

We are committed to the thorough understanding of your legal goals. With this understanding, we can develop a practical strategy and provide sound advice so that the impact of these events will be minimized and you can go on with your life with the least amount of obstacles blocking your new path.

Retirement – How Much Income Can You Afford? By Judy L. Loy, ChFC® and CEO of Nestlerode & Loy, Inc., an investment firm celebrating their 75th year and located in Centre County

would pull only $4,800. Adjusting the withdrawal rate to reflect the market conditions can help sustain the portfolio value but can be difficult for people used to a more predictable income level. However, it is similar to the working years in that if you did not get that bonus or your salary level was frozen, you would adjust your standard of living to accommodate the reality. In this way, you are doing the same in retirement. Over time, the account would grow as would the income to be drawn, just not in a straight line. If the numbers don’t work for the preferred withdrawal rates and the type of activities you dream of enjoying in retirement, the answer may be retiring later or working part time in retirement. Both of these delay the need to pull a higher withdrawal rate and give retirement savings time to continue growing. Also, the length of time the retiree’s portfolio would be needed in retirement would get shorter thus increasing the chance it would last. There are many other options employed to sustain retirees throughout retirement. The best thing to do is to plan ahead. Begin to look at your desires for retirement and what it will take to get there before the time comes. This will give you more options in retirement and a more comfortable outlook when the time comes.

When getting closer or moving into retirement, many investors look to supplement their social security or pension income with income from IRA accounts. In looking toward the retirement portion of their lives, the main questions retirees must ask: Can I sustain my standard of living, will my money last through retirement and how much can I take from my investments every year? For women, this is particularly important. 80% of women will need to take care of their own finances at some time in their lives and the latest statistics say that women live longer than men by 5.2 years on average. The withdrawal rate is important because it can have a long-term effect on the viability of your retirement savings. If you take too much money early in retirement, you may run out of funds later in life. Yet, if you take too little early on, you might not be able to enjoy that money later as much as you could when you were comparatively healthier and more active. The answer to the question of safe withdrawal levels depends on many things. One of the most important is the allocation within an investor’s portfolio. For instance, if you are risk averse and only want ‘guaranteed’ investments, such as Certificate of Deposits (CDs), Bonds and Savings, you will need to adjust your withdrawal rate to a lower amount while interest rates are this low and realize there is no way you are keeping up with inflation. For the current length of retirement (which averages 21 years), it is crucial to keep pace with inflation. This means allocating among bonds, real estate, commodities and, yes, stocks. With traditional diversification such as this, the customary withdrawal rate is 4%. This means that if your portfolio is worth $100,000 you can pull $4,000 (or 333.33/month). Annually, the amount withdrawn can be increased by a 3% inflation rate (2nd year withdrawal $4,120) to maintain your standard of living. This 4% withdrawal rate has been time tested and gives the retiree a comfort level that the money will last 30 years. Global financial services firm T. Rowe Price estimates that there is an 88% chance of the money lasting 30 years by using the 4% rate. This payout rate keeps the retiree feeling secure long-term, but it can be difficult living on 4% of a smaller portfolio. Many retirees use a higher withdrawal rate to maintain their standard of living. Another option is to pull 5% from the portfolio and adjust to that same rate at the beginning of each year. For example, if retirement savings are worth $100,000, you would pull $5,000 in the first year. At the end of the first year, let us assume the markets did badly and the value of the account is $96,000. So in the second year the retiree I read it in the Women’s Journal!

Dentistry

What Keeps You From Going to the Dentist... Accepting New Patients

At Carnicella & Associates we truly have two ways to take the fear out of going to the dentist.

Most people are afraid of needles—so how about needleless “novacaine”? The STA (single tooth anesthesia) Single Tooth delivery system is NOT a Anesthesia shot. Ti drips the anesthetic next to the tooth, numbing S Y S T E M it, without a shot. No numb tongues, lips, or cheeks. No drooling or word slurring. This technology is amazing and not available at most offices. If it really isn’t the needle or shot and you are truly afraid or anxious for no reason, medicine is an option. However, valium scares some people. So why not try hypnosis? Carnicella & Associates now has a licensed hypno-therapist on staff to alleviate all of your worries and fears without having to use medicines. Hypnosis is a state of physical relaxation accompanied and induced by mental concentration. The benefits to Hypnosis can also aid in dieting, quitting smoking, and decreasing dental fears. At Carnicella & Associates we want to change your mind about dentistry. The STA will do that...or we can just alter your mind about dentistry! A Different Kind of Dental Relationship When you visit us, our first goal is to establish a feeling of trust. Our job is to listen to you, respect you, educate you, and not judge your decisions. The doctor understands you might be anxious about the process of receiving dental care. Therefore, she makes it a point to carefully explain your proposed treatment plan and unhurriedly answer all your questions. Only then will she take you gently through your treatment. Modern dentistry has many techniques, local anesthetics, and relaxation methods to increase your comfort. The more involved you are in making your dental health decisions, the less room there is for fear and uncertainty.

Join Our Dental Family of Friends! We would love the opportunity to show you what truly exceptional dental care is all about. Our goal is to provide our patients with care that lasts a lifetime, and we are always very happy to have new patients become part of our family. Our entire team has received special training in providing comfortable, quality dental care, and we love what we do! We welcome the opportunity to offer second opinions, and we strive to treat emergencies that day.

Custom Closets

Get Organized!

With Spring almost upon us, you’re probably craving some new outfits right about now. But before you cram one more piece of clothing in your closet, think about cleaning it up a bit. Here are a few tips to help: Use it or lose it You know it’s true: there are some things in your closet that you’ll never wear again. This is the perfect time to ditch those wastes of valuable Jeff Ulmer, Owner space. Try using these guidelines... • Anything with a stain that won’t ever come up, regardless of what detergent you try • Anything with a hole that can’t be hidden or mended • Anything that makes you think, “Ugh, I hate how this looks on me,” when you actually wear it • Anything that has purely “sentimental” value (it’s just a piece of clothing. You’ll live without it) • Anything that will fit you just as soon as you start up that diet again Put it away (the right way) There are lots of ways to stash your clothing, but you want to do it the right way. Even if you’re working with limited space, try the following: • Store seasonal items away – give the primo space to things you actually wear • Try to maintain a balance of items - when you add something, see if there’s something worn or old that you can take away • Don’t hang your sweaters or knits; instead, fold them to help them retain their shape • Group similar items together (pants, jackets, etc.) to help you assemble outfits quickly Don’t force it! Unless your closet has been “maximized” (something we do at Closet Plus) no amount of massaging can fit 25 feet of clothing into a 15-foot closet. If you have too many “must keep” clothes for your closet’s space, stuffing everything in is not helpful - you’ll only create a headache for yourself later. Instead, consider a closet organization system. One last tip…. At the beginning of a season reverse all of the hangers that have clothes on for that season. Once you wear an item turn the hanger back the correct way. At the end of the season all of those items that have not been put back the correct way should be given to good will. No cheating! Whether you need a pro to organize your space or just want some ideas of your own, stop by one of our showrooms in Mifflinburg and Selinsgrove. Make this the season you get organized. That Just Does Not Make Sense Anymore?

EliminInk Tattoo Removal is a unique system utilizing the latest binding technology for safe removal of unwanted tattoos. There are numerous reasons for the use of EliminInk in removing Tattoos. 1. Permanent makeup Corrections. 2. Unwanted Name. 3. Gang Related tattoos. 4. Tattoo markings for radiation. 5. Tattoo redsign. 6. Impulsive decisions. These are only a few reasons. EliminInk is designed to bond with the original tattoo ink/pigment, and then draw the ink to the surface. DermRenu, a scar inhibitor which is built into the ElininInk solution (as well as being a stand-alone product that is used as part of the after-care program) is designed to minimize or prevent scarring. How it works and will it be painful? Through a specially formulated process, Eliminink "bonds" with all permanent makeup pigments and tattoo ink, thereby resulting in a tattoo removal procedure that is noncolor dependent, unlike that of a laser, which is color dependent. This, in turn, greatly increases the potential for successful tattoo removal and decreases the overall number of treatment sessions required (as compared to what is frequently required when using the laser technique). The Eliminink Tattoo Removal System works much like the original tattooing process. The EliminInk solution is applied using a tattoo over procedure. However, instead of applying ink or pigment this time, EliminInks specially formulated solution bond with the original tattoo ink, and then draws the ink to the skin's surface. You will have some pain associated with this procedure, no more than when you got the tattoo, so if removing a tattoo is what you want then you will have to endure it.

Health

Don’t Miss a Beat in 2012:

Get the Facts About Fats and Heart Health (ARA) With heart disease the leading cause of death in the U.S., according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it’s time to listen to your heart and get the right kinds of fats into your daily diet. The American Heart Association (AHA) recommends consuming polyunsaturated fats, specifically omega-3 fatty acids, for heart health. But what are these “good fats” and how do you make them a part of your daily nutrition program?

of omega-3s. For those who do not eat significant amounts of fish due to dietary preferences, allergies, a vegetarian lifestyle or worries about potential ocean-borne pollutants, there are DHA/EPA supplements made from algae. One such supplement is Schiff MegaRed Plant-Omega, which is made from a vegetarian and sustainable source of DHA and EPA - algae. To learn more, visit www.schiffmegared.com.

Q

: How much DHA/EPA should I get in my diet?

“Hundreds of studies from prestigious groups like the National Institutes of Health and universities like Harvard and Tufts, repeatedly and consistently show that when you add omega-3-rich foods or supplements to the diet, you help to lower your risk for heart disease,” says Elizabeth Somer, a registered dietitian and author of “Eat Your Way to Sexy.” “One important step is making sure your diet is packed with hearthealthy omega-3s. The omega-3s in fatty fish, especially DHA, keep blood vessels squeaky clean and reduce inflammation. They lower heart disease risk; raise HDLs - the good cholesterol; help stabilize the heartbeat and reduce blood clots, thereby curbing the risk for heart attack and stroke.”

A: If you’re not getting at least two servings a week of salmon, mackerel, herring or

sardines, and you’re not loading foods fortified with an algal-based DHA onto your plate, then make sure to take at least 220 milligrams of DHA in pill form. According to the American Heart Association, people with documented coronary heart disease (CHD) are advised to consume about one gram of EPA and DHA per day. Brenda M. Montrella, N.D., CNC, CNHP your doctor of naturopathy and owner of Everything Natural Store and Everything Natural Wellness Center in Altoona looks forward to helping you achieve better health. Please call or visit our store for more information.

Somer answers some questions about heart health:

Q

: What are the main differences between “good fats” and “bad fats?”

A: We often hear that Americans eat too much fat, while people in other parts of the world aren’t eating enough. The truth is that, regardless of fat intake, very few people are eating the right fats. Fats to avoid are saturated and trans fats, which are solid at room temperature - like butter. In contrast, consuming polyunsaturated fatty acids - specifically omega-3s DHA and EPA found in fatty fish - are important for brain, eye and cardiovascular health.

Q

We carry products recommended by Dr. Oz

: Doesn’t my body make all of the omega-3s needed to help maintain a strong heart?

A: Many experts have indicated that the omega-3 fatty acids DHA and EPA are essential nutrients due to the limited ability of our body to make enough of them and because of their beneficial health effects. That’s why we must get these nutrients from the foods we eat and supplements. The main dietary source of DHA and EPA is coldwater fish, such as salmon. Unfortunately, studies show the American diet includes far less than the ideal amount of DHA and EPA. For example, an average U.S. diet contains less than 100 milligrams of DHA per day. That is well below one expert’s recommendation of at least 220 milligrams of DHA per day. Studies show that the more omega-3s you consume, the healthier your heart.
