Zika & Pregnancy News about the Zika virus outbreak is raising concerns. Though the virus is rarely deadly, research links Zika infection during pregnancy with birth defects such as microcephaly, causing a baby’s head to be smaller than expected, as well as vision and growth impairment, and hearing loss. The virus is also associated with a few cases of Guillain-Barré syndrome, which affects the nervous system. Dr. Martin VanDort, infectious disease specialist, and Dr. Farag Salama, OB/GYN, answer some common questions about the Zika virus.

Q: Do we know everything there is to know about the Zika virus?

Q: How can a woman who is pregnant or hoping to become pregnant prevent getting Zika?

Q: Is the Zika virus present in the United States?

A: New data about this disease continues to emerge. Go to www.cdc.gov/zika for the most up-to-date news and recommendations.

A: The best way to prevent getting the Zika virus is to avoid traveling to areas where the virus is known to exist. Check www.cdc.gov/zika for the most current information.

A: To date, there have been more than 500 travelassociated cases of Zika virus and no mosquitoborne cases in the United States. The mosquitoes (Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus) that spread the Zika virus do live in parts of the United States such as Texas, Florida, Georgia and South Carolina.

Q: How do you get the Zika virus? A: Zika virus spreads mainly through the bite of the Aedes aegypti and Aedes Albopictus mosquito, the same mosquitoes that spread the more dangerous dengue and chikungunya fever. They are aggressive daytime biters living in highly populated areas. The mosquito becomes infected by biting a person who has Zika virus; after the virus incubates, the mosquito can spread Zika to people it bites during its 30-day lifetime. The virus can also spread through sexual contact with an infected man, transfer from an infected pregnant woman to her fetus and possibly spread via blood transfusion. Zika virus is found in saliva, blood, urine and semen. It appears to survive longest in semen. Q: What are symptoms of Zika virus? A: For many, there are no symptoms; but others experience fever, rash, joint pain and red eyes. Other symptoms can include muscle pain and headache. These symptoms typically go away after a few days. Q: What is the treatment for Zika virus? A: There is no treatment or vaccination for Zika virus. If you believe you are infected, see your doctor so the condition can be verified and reported. Get plenty of rest and drink fluids to avoid dehydration. Use acetaminophen for any pain and DO NOT use aspirin. Check with your doctor about other medications you are using and take precautions (avoid mosquito bites, practice safe sex, etc.) to avoid spreading the virus.

If you cannot avoid being in these areas, take the following steps to prevent mosquito bites: • Wear long sleeves and pants • Use screens to keep mosquitoes outside

Q: Will pregnant women be screened routinely for the Zika virus?

• Spray mosquito repellent inside and outside the home

A: At this time, screening is limited to those at risk of exposure or who show symptoms of the Zika virus.

• Sleep under a mosquito bed net • Use Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-registered insect repellents with one of the following active ingredients: DEET, picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus or para-menthane-3,8-diol. These are safe for pregnant and breastfeeding women.

Q: What if I am pregnant and believe that I have the Zika virus? A: See your doctor immediately if you believe you have been exposed to the Zika virus.

Prevent sexual transmission of Zika virus with abstinence or by appropriate contraception from start to finish during any oral, vaginal or anal sexual encounters with a man who has either traveled to areas infected with Zika virus or tested positive for the virus during the last six months. Q: How long after potential exposure to the Zika virus should I wait to become pregnant? A: If you are planning to become pregnant, you should not go to areas affected with the Zika virus or postpone plans to become pregnant until eight weeks after return. Men should wait eight weeks before having unprotected intercourse or initiate pregnancy after traveling to affected areas; they should wait six months if they are infected with the Zika virus.

Dr. Martin VanDort (left) is an infectious disease specialist with Susquehanna Health Infectious Disease, and Dr. Farag Salama (right) is an OB/GYN with Susquehanna Health OB/GYN.

Get a new Lift on Life at Jezebel’s Boutique! Check out this recent article concerning bra shopping that offers some “supportive” advice! I spent years buying the wrong bras. They were both too big (in the band) and too small (in the cup). I reinforced them with shelf-bra camis, shrouding myself in layers even under simple T-shirts. But then I did the thing. You know — the thing we’ve all been told to do. I walked into a store that specializes in bra fitting and had them measure me correctly. Yup — I’d been wearing the wrong size all along. Of course, knowing your “size” is only the beginning. Finding the right brand, the right style and the right support for your body is a process. Wearing a properly fitted bra and undergarments can change your appearance, make you feel more comfortable, and help you look thinner and smoother. Let our experts help you find the right fit and style for everyday wear as well as special occasions. We are often asked two important questions from our customers. How do I care for my bra, and how often should I replace it? CARE: So, you’ve found the perfect bra: the exquisite piece of engineering that makes you walk a little taller, talk a little louder, and finally pull off the baggy T-shirt as sexy and effortless rather than frumpy. Now you’ve just got to take care of it. “Hand wash if you can,” A good bra is an investment! Do not bleach. And, worst of all, do not throw them in the dryer.” Also, give your favorite bra a break. Wearing elastics on consecutive days makes them wear out faster. KNOW WHEN IT’S TIME TO LET GO Once you’ve done all this legwork, one of the biggest mistakes you can make is holding onto a beloved bra past its prime. Once it’s no longer capable of doing the work required, it’s time to put it out to pasture. The life expectancy of a bra varies greatly depending on body type and usage. A good rule of thumb is to reevaluate every four to six months, especially if it’s a bra you’re wearing super frequently, with a B or C cup, you maybe not need to replace that bra for 18 months or more. If your nipple is sagging below the horizontal mark halfway between your elbow and your shoulder, then you’re no longer getting the support you need. The spandex in the cup has given out. And once you’ve gotten to the tightest hook and it’s still stretching out, it’s time to get rid of that bra.”

Are You Road Ready? Summer is right around the corner and it’s also travel time. With all the excitement and changes in routine, it can be a challenge to stay healthy.

Never leave home without these three items: Oil of oregano caps: These babies kill everything from bacteria to viruses to parasites. Take one each morning that you are on the road to prevent any unwanted invaders. Probiotics: The best defense is a good offense. Probiotics keep the entire digestive tract healthy and help us offload any unwanted visitors, such as bugs and germs. Even if they reside in the fridge, don’t hesitate to pack them too.

Health detectives Angie Wallace, BS, NC, and Monica Montag, CN, HHP use nutritional counseling, functional testing, and targeted supplementation to help you feel your best!

Thieves: Young Living Essential oil blend that kills 97% airborne bacteria. Dab a little under your nose on the plane, put cotton balls with a few drops on air vents in hotels, and use it to sanitize your hands in a pinch. Sure beats getting sick when you are in a new locale trying to have fun!

SUCCESS STORY:

Now, for what to eat on the road:

“I had lost hope after 7 years of going to doctors that didn’t listen to me when I told them that I was tired ALL of the time and that every time I ate, I felt bad. I do recommend Angie at every single opportunity that I have! Thanks Angie for making a HUGE difference in my life.”

Retirement Surprises

with specific talents to help them with bookkeeping or other tasks. Think of your talents and interests and you will find something that fits. Finally, if you have a partner, talking through how you envision retirement is important, not just the financial impact. Some people want to travel while others enjoy sitting on the back patio reading a book. Having your plans set and then discovering your partner has a different idea can lead to difficulty in retirement. Again, flexibility is key. Differentiating between wants and needs is also important. Make a list of all your expenses in two columns marked ‘wants’ and ‘needs.’ You may want to winter in Florida for three months a year but it is not a need. Let’s say the market takes a drop and you need to pull back on expenses, that’s when you forgo some of the ‘wants’ just as you would if your paycheck was cut. In short, retirement can be a fulfilling time with proper planning but expect surprises on the way and be prepared to face them. By Judy L. Loy, ChFC®, Retirement Income Certified Professional® and CEO of Nestlerode & Loy, Inc., an investment firm located in Centre County and serving the world. As with the working world and life in general, surprises are always just around the corner. Retirement tends to hold its own set of surprises and I have run across quite a few. Given the number of people heading towards retirement, I decided to write this Women’s Journal article on some of the ‘usual surprises’ that can arrive at or in retirement. The first surprise is retiring itself. Recent research from the Transamerica Center for Retirement Studies showed that 60% of people retire earlier than planned. Therefore, when planning your retirement income plan, leave yourself some wiggle room. Otherwise, realize that you may have to lower your standard of living if you retire five years earlier than planned. The two things that make the most impact on a successful financial retirement (i.e. not outliving your money and maintaining your standard of living) are retiring later and taking social security later. Thus retiring earlier than planned can have an impact on a retiree’s ability to maintain long-term financial stability. People retire early for various reasons, from career burnout to job loss to illness in the family- all of which are generally unexpected. Flexibility can be the most important part of a successful retirement. Let’s say a person decided to retire earlier than expected but wanted to delay social security given its inflation adjusted annuity payment. A part-time job can often bridge the gap from full retirement to social security payments. If a retiree has access to an annuity, pension or investments, it may be prudent to take from those sources and delay social security. From FRA (Full retirement age-66-67) until 70, benefits grow an average of 8% a year. Given interest rates, this is the best growth you can get. Another surprise in retirement is the sudden feeling of not contributing. Many people find fulfillment in their careers. Maintaining flexibility here is key. Some firms will allow a phased-in retirement, wherein an employee begins working part-time and having a more flexible workload before they fully retire. If you are looking towards retirement, contemplating your interests is important. Let’s say you have always loved art. Volunteering at an art museum or taking a Penn State course could be a way of fulfilling your desire to still be engaged and learning. Staying social, continuing to learn and staying engaged are three things that can keep a retiree healthy. The talent you brought to a career can also benefit many nonprofit organizations. Non-profits are always looking for good people July August 2016

Why You Might Be Afraid To Let Yourself Smile? Absolutely everyone wants to be proud of their smile; they want to show off a beautiful set of pearly whites; they want to display the confidence they feel inside. So why doesn’t everyone have their own perfect smile? What is everyone so afraid of?

smiling, comp-veneers are for you. Our only options for these issues in the past were veneers, crowns, or braces. These traditional treatments could be cost prohibitive and sometimes damaging to the natural tooth structure. With comp-veneers we usually do not have to do any adjusting to the natual tooth structure, and they are much more cost effective because there is no lab bill. We can also show you a wax up of what your smile would look like, and do a demo or mock up of what it would look like in your mouth before we start. That way you can be assured you will like the final result. Comp-veneers resemble a press on fingernail, but for teeth. We match the size and shape to your tooth, fill the template with filling material, and press it onto your tooth. No shots, minimal drilling, and we bill the procedure as a 5 surface filling to your insurance company, which will cover about half of the cost. Comp- veneers, like Icon can improve your smile without any excuses!

Damage to the tooth? Pain? Money? Not knowing what your smile will look like? Age? Vanity? These are a lot of the reasons why we hear patients may be reluctant to improve their smile. We are here today to let you know, none of these reasons should be used as an excuse to not smile! Not one of these excuses should keep you from the smile you always wanted. We can give you treatment options that... 1. Won’t damage the tooth, 2. Won’t require you to be numb, ( and won’t hurt) 3. Won’t cost a dime for certain cosmetic proceudres 4. Won’t leave you wondering what your smile will look like (we can show you first before we start) 5. Won’t have you leaving the office thinking you are too old for something (it’s more important to have strong, straight teeth as we get older,) and 6. We definitely won’t let you leave thinking a pretty smile is vanity, cosmetically sound smiles are also structurally sound smiles.

Finally, Fast Braces are a great way to align teeth, for cosmetic and functional reasons. “Form follows function”, if the teeth aren’t lined up right, they aren’t functioning right. Improper alignment causes recession, periodontal issues, broken teeth and restorations. A straight smile is not being vain, it’s being smart. Properly aligned teeth will save a fortune in dental costs down the road, no matter what your age. As we get older our teeth become more brittle. Therefore, it is more imperative for the teeth to be properly aligned as we get older, rather than when we are younger. Exactly the opposite of how most people think!! Most adults, however, do not want 2 years of traditional braces (now vanity might be an issue!!) Invisalign can be very cost prohibitive. Fast braces are a great alternative to Invisalign, because there are brackets on the teeth, however, they are clear. Better yet, these clear brackets only need to be in place sometimes for as little as 10 weeks, and the cost is half that of comparable Invisalign treatments.

There are 3 revolutionary products on the market; Icon, Comp-veneers, and Fast Braces. All of these products can resolve issues that at one time only traditional veneers, crowns, or Invisalign could fix. However, those excuses listed above, would pop up with these traditional treatments. However with Icon, Comp-veneers, and Fast Braces, we can put those excuses aside, and create the smile you always wanted without hurting your tooth, your mouth, or your pocket book. White spots on teeth have always been tough for dentists to treat. These white spots can result during development of the tooth, during orthodontic treatment, or they can be decalcification from acid in the mouth. Previously, only veneers or invasive fillings really covered these spots. Most of the spots, however, are just air spaces in the tooth. Icon is a material, that without drilling, can pentrate those air cavities and fill in that void with a clear material that blends in with the natural tooth structure. No shots, no drilling, and we bill the procedure as a one surface filling to the insurance company. Icon is a wonderful way to improve your smile without any excuses!

Please don’t keep making excuses for not smiling. Please don’t keep holding your hand infront of your mouth when you talk, and stop doing that thin lipped smile in pictures! We can help you get the smile you always wanted. These are just a few of the many treatment options we can review with you at our free consultation visits. Call now, and mention this article in the Women’s Journal!

Comp-veneers are another, new, non invasive, way to improve your smile. If it’s large old fillings, discolored teeth, or spacing that is keeping you from

Do I Have A Hearing Problem? Ask yourself the following questions. If you answer “yes” to three or more of these questions, you could have a hearing problem and may need to have your hearing checked by a doctor. • Do you sometimes feel embarrassed when you meet new people because you struggle to hear? • Do you feel frustrated when talking to members of your family because you have difficulty hearing them? • Do you have difficulty hearing when someone speaks in a whisper? • Do you have difficulty hearing when visiting friends, relatives, or neighbors? • Does a hearing problem cause you to attend religious services less often than you would like? • Does a hearing problem cause you to argue with family members? • Do you have trouble hearing the TV or radio at levels that are loud enough for others? • Do you feel that any difficulty with your hearing limits your personal or social life? • Do you have trouble hearing family or friends when you are together in a restaurant?

There’s a New Chapter in Town

Submitted By: Anne Persun Proud Blue Star Mother

loved ones who are serving in the armed forces or are now Veterans. The Blue Star Mothers of America have a service flag that is an official banner authorized by the Department of Defense and is called the Blue Star Flag. The Service flag is displayed inside the home on a front window by families who have members serving in the Armed Forces during any period of war or hostilities. The service flag is an oblong shaped banner with a red border and a blue star placed in the white center. Each blue star on the flag represents a child serving in the Armed Forces.

In March of 2015, the North Central Pa Chapter 12 of the Blue Star Mothers of America, Inc. became a reality for a small group of women from Lycoming County when the organization’s Charter become official. This idea first came to light by Jackie CeaserWherry and Jane Schramm who met through their sons recruiter’s office when they were enlisting into the United States Air Force. As concerned mothers they became aware of the need to support each other and the families of our service members.

Mothers who lose a child while serving during wartime have a gold star placed over the blue star on the service flag. They are known as Gold Star Mothers. These very special mothers understand the meaning of ultimate sacrifice. One of the duties of the Blue Star Mothers is to assist and support the Gold Star Mothers and to make sure their loved ones sacrifices as always honored and remember by the community.

After becoming familiar with the mission of the Blue Star Mothers of America, Inc. it became apparent this organization would be beneficial to the community here in Lycoming County. Jackie and Jane started a recruitment campaign for members. A member would be any mother, stepmother, grandmother, foster mother and female legal guardian who has children serving in the military, guard or reserves, or children who are veterans. Other family members are encouraged to join and would be considered “associate” members. The Blue Star Mothers strive to provide support for active duty service personnel, promote patriotism and assist Veterans organizations.

This year the members of the Blue Star Mothers PA 12 are continuing their mission of honoring Lycoming County service members by bringing for the first time a very special national program to the area called Wreaths Across America. This program started out with wreaths being placed at each of the tombstones in Arlington National Cemetery the second Saturday every December. Since its beginnings the Wreaths Across America program has grown all across the United States and overseas. The Blue Star Mothers mission is that this upcoming December 17th 2016 at Wildwood Cemetery they will be coordinating a wreath-laying ceremony with the ceremony being held at Arlington Cemetery. The goal is to share the Wreaths Across America message, “Remember our fallen U.S. Veterans, Honor those who served, Teach your children the value of freedom”.

This long standing tradition of service and patriotism by the Blue Star Mothers of America started in 1942. Captain George H. Maines, who had conceived the idea for this group had the Flint News Advertiser print a coupon asking mothers of servicemen to return the coupon after filling it out. After receiving 1000 responses from the ad a decision was made to form a permanent organization. On February 6th 1942 the organization was reported on the Congressional record. In June of 1960 the organization was chartered by Congress.

The members of the Blue Star Mothers PA 12 recognize that families of Lycoming and surrounding counties have a long, rich history of service to the country. They understand what it is like to watch the child become an adult and leave home to become a member of the Armed Forces. This understanding and support is the foundation of the organization.

Since the recent chapter formation of North Central PA 12, this group of local women and associate members have assisted the Lycoming County Veterans Affairs with a food drive, mailed care packages to service members deployed overseas, participated in the MIA/POW ceremony, offered support to the Lycoming County Veterans Council during the Memorial Day Service, shown their patriotism by marching in the Veterans Day and Grand Slam Parades plus other projects and activities.

For more information about the local Blue Star Mothers of America Chapter 12 please go to their Facebook page under the same name. Their contact information is: BSMAchapter12@yahoo.com 570-772-4638. Their mailing address is, P.O. Box 851, Williamsport PA 17703.

As a member organization and non-profit, fundraising to support the many projects is always ongoing with hot dog stands, selling baked goods, sales of military themed items and donations. All of the members are volunteers and find great joy in supporting each other and their family members. This fellowship of service and sacrifice is exemplified by their July August 2016

The FACTS About the hCG DIET

Is the hCG Diet An Effective Way To Lose Weight?

"I started losing right away...and thought, "Wow, this really works! "– Sandy D.

"It changes your body. I've changed my whole way of eating." – L.A.

The hCG (human Chorionic Gonadotropin) is a glycoprotein composed of 244 amino acids and it results in rapid and safe weight loss when used in combination with a very low calorie diet in a medically supervised setting. Many patients have advised that it has had a positive effect on their hypothalamus, the part of the brain controlling metabolism. It is believed that hCG injections trigger the body to burn abnormal stored fat while at the same time protects your muscles, healthy fat and basal metabolic rate. Pharmaceutical hCG is FDA regulated and has shown dramatic and sustainable weight loss when administered under a physician's direction and can only be obtained by a licensed physician. Each person is different and our customized approach, tailored to individual needs, allows us to create achievable goals that are based on your lifestyle and personality. At Last Diet Ever, we understand your health challenges and know there are medical and natural options to help you lose extreme amounts of weight quickly, safely and without surgery. Our medical professionals are committed to help you make the changes in your life and health.

Last Diet Ever provides a 4 to 6 week program where men can lose up to a pound a day and women a little less with no hunger - which is often associated with other reduction regimens. This program is a wonderful weight loss program, but is not for everyone. Anytime a person wants to radically change their body weight, they need to get the facts to ensure a healthy long term outcome.

Can I order HCG Drops Over The Internet? Only hCG injections have been shown to raise blood levels of hCG, so that is the only acceptable way of taking hCG at this time. Any other way of taking hCG, such as drops, pills, or sprays, are likely dissolved before ever reaching the blood, and they do not raise blood levels; this would be like taking nothing at all. An injection is the only proven method of taking hCG at this time. Injections should only be taken with a prescription from a doctor, and under medical supervision. (Sheri L. Emma, MD)

Will I Feel Hungry and Deprived? By patient report, hCG reduces feelings of hunger. This allows them to eat very little comfortably. Why? It is believed the presence of hCG in the bloodstream takes the appetite away. hCG is a pro-hormone which helps the body make more hormones. Since hormone deficiency or imbalance is usually part of the reason for weight gain, whether it’s your thyroid, or menopause (or andropause), this hormone offers help.

Disclaimer: The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not approved Human Chorionic Gonaditropin (hCG) for use as a treatment for obesity or weight control. Dual Agency: A double edged sword

When it comes to real estate do you know what a Dual Agent, or dual agency, is? It is not two Realtors dueling over a commission. It is a legally acceptable business arrangement where a Realtor (and Broker) are the same for both the Buyer and the Seller. While it may be a legitimate option for both Realtors and consumers, the question is it a wise choice. The Consumer Notice states the licensee works for both the seller and the buyer. It also explains that “a dual agent may not take any action that is adverse or detrimental to either party” and must disclose any known defects about the property. A final stipulation is noted in that a Realtor (licensee) should have written consent from all parties before acting as a dual agent. With this sort of language, it is clear such an arrangement has both good and bad points. It is a fine edge to balance for a Realtor, and consumers should give it serious consideration before getting into a binding contract. I have done transactions as a Dual Agent, but I am generally not a big fan of them. It can allow for an easier flow of communication when there is only one agent to coordinate things, and in some cases there might be a slight reduction in costs for a seller that could translate into a lower sale price (each contract is unique).

However, there are many opportunities for conflicts of interest to arise in dual agency agreements. A Realtor’s responsibilities for each client is to work exclusively for the best interests of their client and at times doing that for a buyer and a seller is challenging. There are also high professional standards for Realtors in terms of confidentiality of financial and personal information for all consumers. Juggling these demands and limitations adds unique dimensions to negotiations and processing of real estate transactions. Dual agency can be a good option, if addressed correctly. It has to start with transparency and full disclosure on the part of the Realtor as soon as possible. I start by identifying myself as a legal representative for a client and take the time to make sure everyone is clear on what that means. I explain how the dynamics change when people are “under contract” and when we are not, and I go into any conversations with the understanding that dual agency may not be the best arrangement for me or the consumer. As with all things related to real estate, develop a good relationship with a local Realtor of your choosing and talk to them about things like dual agency. It is an acceptable option in today’s real estate world, but is it right for you?

Now that the weather is heating up, many people cannot wait to get outside and play some golf. It’s a sport that people of all ages enjoy, and you never know from one day to the next how you will make out. Although golfing is a fun game, many times players suffer from common injuries. The repetitive torque from swinging the clubs often causes a variety of pain. Listed below are four common golf injuries and how chiropractic can help get you back in the game. 1. Back Pain- This is the most common golfing injury. Swinging clubs in the same direction over and over again causes a lot of torque on the spine especially in the low back area. The repetitive motion can lead to disc injuries, muscle strains, and stress fractures. In our office, Drs. Kevin, Kelli, and Kerri can perform spinal manipulations to relieve pain and pressure from disc injuries. The doctors are also highly trained in whole food nutrition, which can help with ligament support and bone building processes needed after a stress fracture. 2. Golfer’s Elbow- This injury refers to medial or inside elbow pain. Pain in this area is often aggravated with gripping the clubs or during impact of hitting the ball. The doctors in our office are highly trained in applied kinesiology. This technique can help to reset muscles that have been injured around the joint. By fixing the muscles, pain and inflammation can be reduced. 3. Knee Pain- Knees are often affected with golfing due to the rotational forces. Keeping feet planted while swinging the clubs can irritate ligaments and muscles. Constant bending and squatting to gage the green or pick up golf balls can also affect golfers’ knees. Regular chiropractic care can help stabilize the muscles around the knee and ensure proper adjusting occurs to create proper motion within the July August 2016

joint. At Hands in Health, the doctors may also use cold laser therapy, which can help decrease inflammation within the joint. 4. Shoulder Pain- Shoulder injuries are caused from repetitive swinging motions during golf. Drs. Kevin, Kelli, and Kerri can all adjust the shoulder joints to decrease pain. Kinesiotape can also be used to help rehab the shoulder while it heals. Kinesiotape is the colorful tape that many athletes use that acts as ice on the joint, but does not restrict motion. Since 21 muscles attach to the shoulder, many times muscles can become imbalanced. Proper strengthening and stretching exercises can be incorporated during proper rehabilitation. Golfing is an enjoyable sport. The game is growing in popularity among both men and women. Help your body to prevent injury and recover quickly with chiropractic care. At Hands in Health, our doctors work thoroughly to ensure proper healing. If you have questions or would like to schedule an appointment in one of our office locations, please call us. We are excited to help you feel well and get back in the game. The Greatest Wealth is Your Health!

Get Organized! With the change of seasons approaching, you’re probably craving some new outfits right about now. But before you cram one more piece of clothing in your closet, think about cleaning it up a bit. Here are a few tips to help:

clothes for your closet’s space, consider a closet organization system. Whether you need a pro to organize your space or just want some ideas of your own, stop by our showroom in Selinsgrove to get some ideas. Make this the season you get organized.

USE IT OR LOSE IT You know it’s true: there are some things in your closet that you’ll never wear again. This is the perfect time to ditch those wastes of valuable space. Get rid of anything that makes you think, “Ugh, I hate how this looks on me,” when you actually wear it, that has purely “sentimental” value (it’s just a piece of clothing. You’ll live without it) or anything that will fit you just as soon as you start up that diet again.

PUT IT AWAY (THE RIGHT WAY)

There are lots of ways to stash your clothing, but you want to do it the right way. Even if you’re working with very limited space, try to store seasonal items away, don’t hang your sweaters or knits; fold to retain their shape, and group similar items together (pants, jackets, etc.). DON’T FORCE IT! Unless your closet has been “maximized” (something we do at Closet Plus) no amount of massaging can fit 25 feet of clothing into a 15-foot closet. If you have too many “must keep”

Yes! Libraries in the Digital Age Community

By Molly A. Hetrick, Manager of Philanthropy at Schlow Centre Region Library

With the increasing prevalence of digital and downloadable material, you might wonder what libraries have to offer these days. While the written word and a good solid book in your hand still have so much value, libraries are just as focused on digital resources as their patrons. Libraries provide services and materials needed by patrons in their communities - and often for free! So, if you have an information-related need, it’s likely that your local library can help. How do libraries provide free resources to thousands of patrons, when getting a library card is also free? State, county, and local municipalities often cooperate to fund libraries, along with very healthy support from Friends groups and donors big and small. Every library in Pennsylvania has access to Power Library, a collection of databases funded by the state and available to all library patrons at no charge. From the comfort of your own computer, with your library card log-in, you can access programs like BookFlix - a collection of well-known children’s books transformed into delightful video storybooks and PA Job Resources – a robust resource for jobhunters, complete with thousands of employment opportunities and a resume-builder! Many libraries offer online language courses for adults and children, newspaper database services containing newspapers from all over the world, and – their most popular collection of all - downloadable eBooks! eBooks and eAudiobooks are flying off libraries’ digital shelves, largely because they are a great way for patrons to save money: instead of buying them online, readers can borrow them for free from their local libraries. However, many patrons don’t realize that eBooks cost a library exponentially more than they do for someone using an online service such as Amazon, due to publisher policies and copyright regulations. Feeling grateful that your library provides these books for you? Consider donating to your local library, which is always welcome to offset the costs associated with these offerings. Libraries also continue to be a community hub where people come for social interaction, education, and recreation. Recently moved to a new place? Visit your new local library to learn about community services, local government offerings, or schools, and you’re almost guaranteed to make your first new friend while you’re at it. You’ll see voracious readers browsing the shelves, finding a new bestseller, or enjoying magazines for free. Most July August July August 2016 2016

libraries offer a request option for busy patrons who wish to search for items online, place a hold on them, and simply zip into the library for a quick pick-up. Libraries are often information centers for local social services and non-profits, as well as a great place to attend fascinating programs on subjects ranging from music and science to the ins and outs of the latest digital devices. If you’ve become disconnected from your local library recently, it’s time to reconnect! Stop by the service desk and ask for a quick overview of online options, check out the calendar of events, browse through the new book section, or talk to your friends about what services they’re enjoying the most. Libraries are doing a great job keeping pace with the changing digital times and still provide vital, useful, and educational resources within the community. Hope to see you soon!
