What if You Could Climb That Sledding Hill as Fast as the Kids? Don’t let heavy, aching and swollen legs stop your winter fun! Vein Disease is said to affect 30-40% of Americans and most don’t even know they have it. Slowing down your life because of swollen, aching, heavy legs or restless leg is not an option in the lifestyle of today’s busy women. You do not have to limit the time spent on your feet to eliminate the symptoms. They are treatable and even covered by insurance 95% of the time. Vein Disease is not just the presence of ugly varicose and spider veins, which are thought to be a cosmetic issue. Those ugly veins can be part of the problem but just because you can’t see the veins on your legs, does not mean that you aren’t at risk. Vein disease (also known as Chronic Venous Insufficiency) is often rooted from an underlying issue where valves within the leg veins do not open and close properly causing a pooling of blood in the legs. Vein disease is chronic and progressive so over time it can increase in severity with non-treatment. The pooling of blood can cause worsening symptoms or can even lead to serious complications like bleeding veins, ulcers and even blood clots. Early detection and treatment is the key! Early detection starts with education and a proper diagnosis. A free consultation will explain the disease and its effect on your body as well as the treatment options available and your specific insurance coverage options. It’s important to conduct a specific physical examination where it can be determined how your legs feel and if you are experiencing any symptoms, and if so, how the symptoms affect your daily life. In addition to the physical examine, it is important to always have a venous ultrasound to look at the valves within the veins of the leg. This is the only definitive way to determine if vein disease is present.

I HAD NO IDEA I DIDN’T HAVE TO LIVE WITH LEG PAIN

The procedures to correct the valve malfunction of Chronic Venous Insufficiency are surprisingly easy. Patients no longer experience the painful vein stripping of the past which required time off work, a hospital and surgical experience, and pain! Laser treatments are fast (done in less than an hour), virtually pain free with no sedation, and done in the office. The best part is that there is little to no effect to your normal routine. In fact, you are encouraged to walk and move. The results speak for themselves when the aching and heaviness are gone from your legs and you can stand all day pain free! So cook, go to the kids or grandkids events, exercise, travel, and even go to your job pain free! You can even go out and buy that pair of shoes, which will not only look better on a great pair of legs but they will feel better too!

Healthy Veins are Essential to Healthy Living PReVentIVe VeIn cARe

If you experience tired, achy, painful legs, you are not alone. Varicose veins affect over 20% of the United States adult population. Although usually thought to be no more than a cosmetic nuisance, varicose veins can be the source of more serious complications.

Self-care—such as exercise, maintaining a healthy weight, eating well, elevating your legs, wearing compression stockings and controlling other health conditions—can help prevent varicose veins or keep them from getting worse. However, if you are concerned about how your veins look and feel, you should know there are virtually pain-free treatments available. Walk in, walk out.

•  •  •  •  • WhAt IS VeIn dISeASe? Healthy veins have valves which open and close to assist the return of blood to the heart. Venous disease occurs if these valves become damaged, allowing the backward flow of blood in the legs. When blood cannot be properly returned through the vein, it can pool in the legs, leading to a feeling of heaviness and fatigue—causing varicose veins and other skin changes. While usually not lifethreatening, venous disorders still affect your circulatory system and can lead to more serious complications, such as ulcers, blood clots and/or stroke if left untreated. Spider veins are similar to varicose veins, but are usually fine and superficial. Spider veins are found closer to the skin’s surface and are often red or blue.

•  •  •  •  • SPIdeR VeInS & OtheR VAScULAR SKIn cOndItIOnS The Excel V™ laser system by Cutera® safely and effectively treats a broad range of vascular skin conditions, from superficial blemishes and skin discoloration to large lesions and deep vascular scars. It provides fast, immediate results without injections or long-term side effects on conditions such as rosacea, spider veins in the legs and face, telangiectasia, cherry angioma, sun spots and port wine stains. Aesthetic services are also available for treatment of common skin conditions. Treatments can repair damage, open pores, remove dead cells and toxins, tighten and firm the skin, and add vital nutrients and water which reduce the appearance of wrinkles and dry skin.

WhAt cAUSeS VeIn dISeASe? Most vein disease has a strong genetic link, however, the more time we spend sedentary or standing on our feet, the more we increase the likelihood that our veins will have difficulty returning the blood.

•  •  •  •  •

The most common factors are: • genetics

• body weight

• age

• gender

• sedentary lifestyle

Women are about two times more likely to suffer from varicose veins than men. Pregnancy and hormonal changes can increase susceptibility to varicose veins.

There are many minimally-invasive options to treat your venous conditions—with a short recovery and quick return to everyday activities. A personalized plan of care will be determined to meet your individualized needs. Fall is an ideal time of year to treat your varicose veins. It is easier to avoid sun exposure and comfortably wear compression stockings which are essential in the healing process.

Small Business Retirement By Judy L. Loy, ChFC®, Retirement Income Certified Professional® and CEO of Nestlerode & Loy, Inc., an investment firm located in Centre County and serving the world.

contributions. vested.

The simplest way for an individual to save for retirement is a Traditional IRA or Roth IRA. The contribution limits on these are lower, with a maximum for 2015 of $5,500 ($6,500 for those age 50 and over) but administration is low and other employees don’t need to be included because it is not based on your business. It should be noted that if you have a retirement plan through another job and/ or are married, income guidelines may still limit your IRA options.

Being your own boss is as popular as ever. From aging Baby Boomers wanting to keep their own schedules to young entrepreneurs trying to build the next Uber or Facebook to women who want to be at home with their kids but still have a fulfilling career, many turn to consulting or their own business to create a living. Times can be tough when you are just starting out but don’t let retirement savings take a sideline for too long.

There are many choices and intricacies when selecting the right retirement plan for your business. For more information and to find the right fit for your sole proprietorship or small business, consult with a financial advisor. They can help work through the details, the numbers and your needs and wants.

Once money starts flowing to the bottom line, a small business retirement plan can be the ticket to saving taxes and retiring when you want. Created specifically for small businesses under 100 employees, a Simple IRA allows for tax deductions and tax deferral for employees. It also has a nice employee 2015 contribution maximum of $12,500 ($15,500 for those over age 50). The employer must match (1-3%) or contribute (2%) into employee accounts for a Simple so there are costs involved. The plus side is that the administration of a Simple is, well, simple. There are no top heavy requirements or testing needed.

Nestlerode & Loy Oct/Nov Investment2015 Advisors offer brokerage and investment Women’s Journal services tobyindividuals, businesses and Marketing, non-profits.814-643-3385 For a review of your Prepared Janet Chambers, Beacon investments and help planning for retirement, please call Judy Loy, janet@callbeacon.com ChFC®, RICP® at 814-238-6249 or email jloy@nestlerode.com.

Will you have a worry-free retirement?

If you want to put money in from your company without employee contributions or if you are a sole proprietor at tax time, a SEP IRA allows for a ‘profit sharing’ type of arrangement where a chosen percentage of salary can be contributed by the employer for each employee. The nice part of this plan is that reporting requirements are minimal; the contributions can be made after year-end when you know what your numbers are and contributions don’t need to be made each year. For a small business that wants vesting or a sole proprietor that wishes to maximize their contributions, a 401k or an individual 401k can be a good match. Reporting requirements are higher and for a company with more than one employee, the costs are much higher than other small business plans. The advantage is high contribution limits of $18,000 ($24,000 for those over age 50) for the employee. The employer can also choose to match or do a profit sharing contribution. 401k plans can also have loan provisions and Roth options, which other small business plans cannot. A 401k can have a vesting schedule for employer contributions, which can help with employee retention and reward longer term employees. The Simple IRA and Sep IRA are vested immediately for employer Novemeber December 2015

Employee contributions are always immediately

Get to Know the Pelvic Floor Many women accept incontinence, pelvic pain and pain with sexual intercourse as part of aging or a side effect of pregnancy or childbirth. Fortunately, many of these and other symptoms related to the pelvic floor can be relieved through specialized physical therapy.

WHAT IS THE PELVIC FLOOR? The pelvic floor is a hammock-like group of muscles inside the pelvis that spans from the front of the pelvis to the tailbone. In women, the pelvic floor supports pelvic organs such as the bladder, uterus and bowels. They also help with bowel and bladder control, lower back support, and sexual function.

WHAT IS PELVIC FLOOR DYSFUNCTION? Issues with the pelvic floor can occur in women and men of all ages. When the pelvic muscles are too weak or too tight, they can interfere with bowel and bladder health, daily activities, intimacy and confidence about leaving home for work, errands and social events.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE COMMON PROBLEMS THAT CAN RESULT FROM A PELVIC FLOOR DYSFUNCTION? Bowel and bladder incontinence and urgency are among the most common problems, but pain during sexual intercourse, chronic pelvic or bladder pain, low back pain, and constipation are among others.

AREN’T PELVIC FLOOR PROBLEMS JUST PART OF AGING? Issues with the pelvic floor can occur in women and men of all ages. Some people just naturally have weak pelvic muscles. Certain stages of life, such as pregnancy, childbirth or menopause commonly contribute to pelvic weakness in women. Although these are common medical problems—experienced by millions—you should not quietly accept symptoms that impact your daily activities.

WHEN SHOULD I SEEK HELP, AND WHO SHOULD I SEE? Not everyone feels comfortable talking about embarrassing accidents and sexual experiences with their doctor. Rest assured, he or she has probably heard it before. If symptoms such as bladder or bowel incontinence or urgency, urine retention, constipation, pelvic pain, pelvic organ prolapse or pain with intercourse affect your daily life, speak up now! Your doctor can rule out a life-threatening condition and help you find the most effective treatment before these medical problems negatively impact your quality of life.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING PELVIC FLOOR THERAPY? Pelvic floor therapy is provided in a private setting by physical therapists who have specialized training to evaluate and treat pelvic floor dysfunction. They will take your medical history and lifestyle into consideration when developing your treatments which may include: pelvic floor muscle strengthening, posture and body mechanics training, pelvic joint alignment and mobilization, manual therapy, biofeedback, electrical stimulation, healthy bladder and bowel strategies, fluid and dietary education, bladder training and urgency reduction strategies, relaxation techniques, and stress management.

HOW DO I SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT? Physical therapy requires a referral from your healthcare provider. Call (570) 320-7470 for an appointment.

Shari Berthold, DPT, Victoria Hurwitz, DPT, WCS, and Amy Vandermark, DPT, are Susquehanna Health physical therapists specially trained in pelvic floor therapy and can answer common questions about pelvic floor disorders.

While medications and surgery are options, many times they can be delayed or avoided with pelvic floor therapy.

Pelvic Floor Therapy is offered at the Costello Center, 1705 Warren Avenue and Williamsport Regional Medical Center, 700 High St., both located in Williamsport.

Publisher Note

PUBLISHER NOTE:

Someone recently was talking to Dr. Altmanshofer about TWJ and was saying that the magazine is very appealing and calming. He replied, “It is just a class act!”

My wish for you during the upcoming holidays is one of love and giving. This is the season of giving… so I suggest you GIVE of yourself. There are many ways to do that. It isn’t always a pretty boxed gift… sometimes it’s a hug or a few minutes of your time sitting and listening to someone else. Taking an elderly person out for lunch or babysitting for a single mom who doesn’t get time to herself is another option. I’m sure you can think of many other ways to give of yourself. MOMENTARILY…. Put down the IPhone and IPad and think of someone who can use a special gift – a gift of your time. We in Central PA, America are rich in so many ways…and we can be richer with our friends by giving them a present of ourselves.

Colleen Small from the UPS store says she sees The Women’s Journal everywhere! Frank Elliott believes it is not advertising but educating women about what he does that gets the telephone to ring and his business to grow. Drs. Kevin and Kelli from Hands in Health think its one of the best opportunities to educate their potential patients

I would like to take this opportunity and say THANK YOU to our readers and our contributors. It fills my heart when I hear stories about how one of our journal stories helped someone make a new decision or take a new path. That’s awesome and I’m thankful women continue to give and receive those ‘gifts’ that help them grow both professionally and personally.

violin duo

Revamped is an independent duo comprised of violinists Mark Minnich and Sally Williams Minnich, who have been bringing the precision of classical training together with the energy of pop concerts ever since since establishing the group in 2008. They have performed in Ohio, Indiana, Pennsylvania, Arizona, Maryland, Washington D.C., and abroad in Austria and Greece. Revamped is currently based out of Central Pennsylvania and is available for performances in Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Washington D.C., New York City and surrounding areas. Centuries ago, musicians were typically composers, performers, and improvisers; each involved in every part of the music-making process. Now, in 2015 we find many genres with sharp delineations and musicians with specializations. Classical music is sometimes referred to as boring and popular music as commercial and shallow. It seems as if the bridges that once joined different aspects of music have been closed off or broken. Revamped tries to cross these bridges in this CD as we infuse classical music with modern sounds and simple popular tunes with rich depth. YouTube CD Sampler: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0cJDiWhFxDQ To Order: http://www.revampedduo.com/albums.html Upcoming Performances: Revamped will be performing in State College's "First Night" celebrations on New Year's Eve; details TBA on their website, revampedduo.com.

Central PA Hometowns: Where Our Hearts Are

Sunbury

At the picturesque point where the west and north branches of the Susquehanna converge, sits the City of Sunbury. Sunbury dates back to 1772 and was named for an English Village, Sunbury-onThames, near London. The Susquehanna River is a beautiful city boundary and a source of many water sports. As of the census of 2010, there were 9,905 residents. The date of first human settlement of Sunbury is not known. However, historian C. A. Weslager indicates that it was probably Shawnee migrants who first settled there. A large population of Delaware Indians was also forcibly resettled there in the early 18th century after they lost rights to their land in the Walking Purchase. From 1727 to 1756, Sunbury was one of the largest and most influential Indian settlements in Pennsylvania. At that time, it was known as Shamokin, not to be confused with the present-day city of Shamokin, PA, located to the east. In 1745, Presbyterian missionary David Brainerd reported that the city housed 300 Indians, half of which were Delawares and the other Seneca and Tutelo. For more about the area’s history, visit the Fort Augusta museum, the genealogical library, and the Powder Magazine at 1150 North Front Street. It is open on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, March through December, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free. Keefer Station Covered Bridge is a quaint reminder of the history of the area, just east of Sunbury on Township Rd. 698. See this and many other covered bridges in the county. The town is home to many parks and playgrounds for children and families, in addition to Cameron Park, Fort Discovery is open 9 to 9 on North Fourth Street. It was built entirely by volunteers. Thomas Edison installed the first successful three-wire electric lighting system here in July 1883. Using Sunbury's City Hotel as its base, the Sunbury Company built a coal-fired power plant on a vacant lot at the corner of Vine and Fourth streets in just three weeks. After a three-wire line was strung to the City Hotel, Edison, on the night of July 4,1883, switched on the current to a 100-candle power light over the City Hotel entrance, to the cheers of residents and marches played by a local brass band. At the city's 150th anniversary celebration in 1922, it was renamed the Edison Hotel and remains in operation today. Every year, at 6 p.m. November 27, the Friday after Thanksgiving, the City of Sunbury hosts an annual parade to bring Santa Claus to his house on Market Street in Cameron Park. The evening features family-oriented craft and food vendors, a parade with the arrival of Santa and the lighting of the tree in Cameron Park, where there is also a live Nativity scene in December. The City Band will entertain. Light refreshments will be served after Santa arrives. Santa receives visitors in his house in Cameron Park throughout the Christmas season. The Polar Express train runs six times on a Saturday and Sunday in early December. Tickets are $10, with children two and under free. The one-hour train ride features Christmas music, story time, and a visit with Santa. Proceeds benefit Fort Discovery playground.

The work done by Closets Plus in my new home is beyond description. Every closet in the house was renovated and wall to wall cabinets and drawers were constructed in the garage. I tell everyone that Jeff’s work is the thing I like most about my home. He is extremely knowledgeable and professional. There was not a single negative about my experience with Closets Plus. Jeff is not just highly skilled, but, also, a true gentleman. Pat – Lewisburg Closets Plus was the best option for us from start to finish! Jeff completed an amazing walk in closet in our house. Thinking of what was important to us, Closets Plus hit them all! First, the finished project is BEYOND our expectations. Honestly, I can’t say enough about how pleased I am with it (and thats coming from someone who has difficulty visualizing what the end is going to look like from paper). Second, Closets Plus was so easy to work with and flexible. He took our “wish list” and added his ideas and came up with several great options for us to choose from. He welcomed our ideas, suggestions and was willing to make changes until we all agreed on the perfect closet!!! And lastly, he completed this AMAZING closet all within our budget!!!! Brave New World Technology has impacted our world in ways that can improve, or detract, from the experience of buying and selling real estate. In some ways it has been a game changer. There is an amazing amount of information available with the click of a button. The challenges arise when trying to manage and interpret that array of data. Consumers can take greater control over their real estate experience but prudently applying that information should also involve consultation with a trained and licensed professional.

Information on national and regional trends is nice to know. However they may also give you a false sense of what to expect. In central PA we have this problem as there is a great deal of variability from one location to another (i.e. average sale price in State College is $280,000+, in Bellefonte it is below $200,000*). Shows such as HGTV can generate some great ideas but I wish you the best in trying to replicate their results in real time. The same can be said about service providers, including Realtors.

The multitude of sources of information available these days can provide accurate information, or be skewed to portray a particular perspective. It is also easy to present an unrealistic impression of how things work, or who you should work with. I could generate an extensive list of products, services, and service providers who have great presence in the electronic realm. However when you look closer it is apparent that they may not be applicable for your circumstances, or they may know their way around a keyboard better than they know their way around real properties.

Take the time to do your research before you make any decisions. Use electronic sources to gather data, but also take the time to talk to people in person to see if their style meets your needs and they are someone you can rely on. Nothing can beat a well-informed, honest local Realtor in meeting your real estate needs. *- Based upon statistics from the Centre County Association of Realtors MLS, as of October 2015

Want to Make a Difference?

100+ WWC started in 2006 in Ohio when four ladies decided to help their local hospital buy cribs. Today that group is 200 strong. Can you imagine the power that 200 ladies have when they write their $100 check? That’s Twenty Thousand Dollars. Locally, In 2012 Tere Rill, founder of the PA groups, decided if Ohio can do it, so can we. Obviously, we are not at that 200 strong level but we are growing. The groups have many stories and are doing some marvelous things. As an example - The Centre County Ladies gave Easter Seals almost $2,000 and the Huntingdon group gave $500 to ABCsmallanimals.com. It’s easy…each Member commits to donating $100 per meeting ($400 per year) and meetings are one hour or less four times per year. Members have the opportunity to share their passion at the meeting – three are chosen and after some short presentations, the group votes by ballot. Majority rules. Members bring a check to be written out directly to the selected charity. ALL donations are made directly to the winning non-profit…no facilitator or founder get any money. If a member is unable to attend a meeting she may give her check to another member to deliver on her behalf or she may mail it in after the meeting. All donations will be given to the winning area-non-profit 501(c) (3) organizations or other groups deemed worthy by group majority. All About Holiday Treats

For questions about your pets nutrition or to schedule an appointment contact Sunbury Animal Hosptial at 570-286-5131.

Were all guilty of it, sneaking our four legged family members a little bit of Thanksgiving Dinner. However it's important to know what’s safe and what can be harmful. Dogs and cats should never be fed grapes, onions, bones, chocolate, caffeine, alcohol, avocado, macadamia nuts, and xylitol (this is a sweetener used in gum, candy, baked goods). People foods that are safe, in moderation, are chicken, beef, pizza crust and vegetables. The most important rule is PORTION CONTROL! For a 10lb cat, 1 ounce of cheese is like us eating 3 ½ hamburgers and a 20lb dog, just 1 hotdog is like a person consuming 3 hamburgers! Just like people, animals can have sensitive stomachs or food allergies. If you give your pet people food or a new treat, it could cause diarrhea and/or vomiting. At holiday gatherings this year, try providing pet friendly treats and make sure the garbage is secure; pets won't think twice about eating tin foil or plastic wrap with delicious food on it. Remember its ok to offer your pet a little table food, but make sure the ingredients are safe for your pet and all things in moderation!

MOM-trepreneurs – A New Networking Concept in Blair County

Sarah Jubeck started a club for mom entrepreneurs with some of the women from the Hollidaysburg Altoona MOMS Club. They have since opened up the group to any local mom who owns or runs her own business including sales consultants for franchised specialties. “We do have a lot of moms who have their own original businesses and we’re growing.” “I started this group because I noticed more and more of the moms in the MOMS Club started taking on side businesses. They would work out of their homes to contribute to the family income, giving them something to do – something that utilizes their strengths and talents. Sometimes when you become a mom that gets put on the back burner.” “Our group’s purpose is to support other local mother-run businesses and essentially pull each other up instead of having a frenzied every-woman-for-herself outlook. We help each other and give each other advice on life and business. A lot of the ladies just want to vent about the struggles of balancing family life and the work it takes to run your own business. Others want ideas for advertising or expanding their business.” “We’re there for each other. It’s ok to have a business and a family! We just started having a monthly meeting, at different locations each month. We eat, drink, and talk about key topics and just take time to vent. It gives us a chance to connect with others who understand and appreciate us for ALL that we do.” For information, visit facebook.com/groups/MOMTrepreneursAltoona/ The next meeting is November 18 at 5 p.m. at Fired Up Ceramics, Duncansville.

Sarah Jubeck, Paint Party by Sarah

ALTOONA – Sarah started her business this year. Paint Party by Sarah is a traveling business serving central PA. She give step-by-step painting instruction in a party setting for people aged three to 100. She also offers private painting and drawing lessons from her home studio. When she’s not teaching art, she continues to create her own work, competing for awards and showing her paintings around the state and beyond. Her husband, Brian, and she have a four-year-old son.

Kaleen Wolfe, Flirt & Flutter Handcrafted Jewelry

HOLLIDAYSBURG – Kaleen has three children aged six, three, and one. She’s always been interested in making jewelry. She designed her newest jewelry endeavor, custom fingerprint, pet paw or nose print, and other customized pieces. She uses a mold of the print to craft pendants, charms, and other items out of silver, copper, bronze, and, occasionally, gold. Everything she makes is personalized. Much can be done through the mail, sending the mold with instructions, and returning it to her. “I like the new group, seeing how they are balancing business and families,” Kaleen said.

Kathy Brua, Fired Up Ceramics

NEWRY – Kathy’s children are now ages six and eight. Her ceramics workshop is in nearby Duncansville. She creates traditional and seasonal pottery pieces that are ready to be painted – by her customers. After a customer chooses a piece and decorates it, Kathy fires it in a kiln with a final glaze. She has children’s story-times with ceramic pieces to match, ladies nights, summer camps, holiday theme nights, and now, gift theme nights. She takes it on the road for pre-schools, nursing homes, and birthday parties. “We’re all moms, some former stay-at-home moms, and share ideas, what others are doing,” Kathy said.

Andrea Sapko, AMS Photography

HOLLIDAYSBURG – Andrea has two boys, ages five and nearly three. “They’re awesome. They keep me busy – full of excitement,” she said. As if that was not enough, Andrea started a portrait photography business, AMS Photography, where she specializes in keepsake photos of families and babies. She schedules her time around when her husband can be home. Her photography had been a hobby, but after her children were born, became a family-centered business. “The club is our networking support group,” Andrea said. “Some have side businesses, or work in direct sales managing their own businesses for companies like Mary Kay, and we also want to do business with one another when we can.”

It’s that Time of the Year Again! The holidays are here. So you are probably thinking, what can I buy this year for my parents, siblings, and friends? Many of us don’t NEED fancy clothes, new electronics, sparkling jewelry, or sports memorabilia. We like all those things, but they are not a necessity. However, we DO NEED our health. It is one of the most precious gifts. We need our health to live our life as optimally as we can and to share special moments with people we love. This year we encourage you to give the gift of health to people you care about and to yourself. The holiday season can get stressful with shopping, going to parties, and over-eating. Let us help. We can offer gift certificates to our office for chiropractic and applied kinesiology services, nutritional consults, detoxing foot baths, and massage therapy. Taking time to rejuvenate your body is so important. We are excited to help you live life to the fullest. We will be hosting wellness workshops during the holiday season. Please attend and bring friends and family if you would like to learn more. We wish you many blessings and well wishes throughout the season.

Is Your Hearing Loss Associated With Other Health Issues? Dementia, Depression, Diabetes, Heart and Kidney Disease By Dr. Sandra Chamberlin, Au.D., CCC-A Much research has taken place recently to look at the relationship between hearing loss and other health issues. Studies have linked hearing loss with Cardiovascular Disease, Chronic Kidney Disease, Cognitive Decline and Dementia, Depression, Diabetes and Falling. A 2011 study found an association between Cardiovascular Disease and poorer hearing sensitivity. A 2010 study found that Chronic Kidney Disease also known as Chronic Renal Disease was associated with a 43% increased risk of hearing loss. A 2011 and 2013 study found that hearing loss was associated with accelerated cognitive decline and cognitive impairment in older adults. Hearing loss was associated with developing dementia. A 2014 study found that hearing loss was associated with depression, particularly in older women with moderate hearing loss. A 2012 study found that hearing loss was twice as common among people who had diabetes compared to those who did not. A 2012 study found for every 10dB increase in hearing loss, the risk of falling increased one and a half times. A 25dB hearing loss was associated with a nearly threefold increased risk of falling. Changes to PA

Law

In the last half of the twentieth century, Pennsylvania and other states began to adopt a no-fault divorce which allowed couples to be granted a divorce without having to prove that one of them committed intolerable acts such as abuse or adultery. Today, all that is required is that both parties agree the marriage is “irretrievably broken.” If both parties agree to the divorce, a divorce can be final in 90 days. However, if both parties do not agree to the divorce, then the divorce can take over two years. And there is the rub. It is not uncommon that one party will benefit financially from remaining married. These benefits include, spousal support, health insurance, residing in the marital home, etc., etc., Although both parties may want a divorce, the party that benefits from the marriage will stay married for the full two years before agreeing to terms. Even though one party may benefit financially, the process for both parties is unduly long, expensive, and there are the emotional costs which cannot be simply calculated such as lingering resentment among parents of children. A bill is being presented in Pennsylvania that would reduce the current two-year waiting period under Pennsylvania’s no-fault divorce law to one year. Members of the Pennsylvania Bar Association Family Law Section argue that this change in the law would focus courts on resolving the overall divorce issues, as opposed to allowing a system that facilitates and fosters delay that is both economically and emotionally costly. If Pennsylvania passes this law, it will fall in line with many other neighboring states with much shorter waiting periods including Delaware, New Jersey, and New

York, which all have six month waiting periods. The waiting period is one year in Maryland, and there is no waiting period in West Virginia. Regardless of whether this proposed legislation is passed, divorcing couples need the assistance of skilled and informed attorneys who are able to both zealously advocate for their clients and provide the emotional strength and stability necessary to guide parties through this often trying process.
