Very few young Nollywood actors are good at their craft, and Timini Egbuson is one of them. Born in Bayelsa, Egbuson got into acting in his early twenties. His first break came with his role as Toby in MTV’s Shuga, a role he played for about seven years. Timini Egbuson says he didn’t think he had what it took to be an actor, but after being cast in Tinsel, he wanted to do better. And with a sister and mentor like A-list Nollywood actress Dakore Egbuson-Akande, he had someone to look up to, telling himself that if she could do it, so could he. Coming from an entertainment-based family also helped because that would mean he was naturally inclined to the entertainment industry. Plus, he had his big sister to guide him on the dos and don’ts of the industry. He says he still receives guidance from her and doesn’t think it will stop soon. When it comes to rejection, Timini believes that it is part of the process as an actor and that at some point in time, you might feel like you are right for a role, but the director’s vision for the producers might not see you being in it, and it’s something you have to understand. Timini discusses his career on pages 8 to 10.

Foreign Airlines Resort to Aeropolitics as Air Peace Shakes up Lucrative London Route

On July 13, 2022, Air Peace made its inaugural flight operation to China, a 14-hour journey. Soon, it launched three other international routes to Mumbai in India, a 9-hours 14 minutes’ flight from Nigeria and then it expanded into Tel Aviv in Israel and Jeddah in Saudi Arabia.

But on March 30, 2024, the airline, which has been undertaking additional 160 hours’ daily flight within its home country Nigeria for the past seven years since it was founded, flew a fully booked Boeing 777 – a sixhour flight – into London Gatwick airport and all hell was let loose.

Of course, Air Peace CEO, Allen Onyema, beat his chest for what he described as “a six-hour flight that is a nonstarter, a piece of cake,” considering his growing local and international reputation as a Nigeria brand.

BEGINNING OF TROUBLE

Narrating the airline’s experience on that maiden London flight, Onyema said operational roadblocks were erected to frustrate Air Peace. The check-in area was changed unannounced. Delay set in. Then the conveyor system from which passengers collect their luggage was not working and luggage had to be manually carried for a distance of 50 meters. At Gatwick Airport, no slot was available for a long time, a very frustrating experience for the airline’s management staff and passengers who were mostly Nigerians.

But Air Peace would have been mistaken if it thought it was going into a lucrative and competitive London route without a stiff challenge or resistance from old war horses like British Airways, KLM, Ethiopian

Airlines and Virgin Airlines that have dominated the route for long.

“Defunct Bellview Airlines, Medview Airlines and Arik Air had their baptism of fire on this lucrative route before they all went burst,” foremost aviation expert and immediate past president of Aviation Round Table, ART, Dr Gbenga Olowo, told THEWILL last week. “So, Air Peace must be determined to make a difference.”

He reminded the airline of the need to understand ‘aeropolitics’ which is key in the international airline business and be prepared to handle it maturely while seeking government’s support.

previous airlines on the London route did not survive was not because of the politics of the Bilateral Aviation Safety Agreement, BASA.

“It is about access to aircraft on favourable terms. We are going to pray for Air Peace and pray for Allen Onyema that he can sustain this. This is because he is doing this at great expense, even at marginal profit or loss to challenge and it is going to get better,” he said.

Nonetheless, the minister was frontal in his statement that the ‘aeropolitics,’ that forced the previous airline off the London routes was over.

“If they (the UK) go about it subtly, then, we will introduce it too,” he told Aviation Correspondents last week.

The Acting Director-General of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA, Capt Chris Najomo, while speaking on Air Peace's latest moves, provides insight to show that despite the rivalry, the groundwork for this recent aviation breakthrough was laid four years ago.

He said, “You wouldn't believe it. The ministry has been following up on this development for four years now. In fact, the last meeting was when we went to London with the minister and Director, Air Transport Operations and other officials. We went there altogether to tell them how Nigeria is supporting this course. This is the outcome.

''We are so elated that this has come to stay. This is beckoning to all other local airlines to follow suit. We are waiting for others to follow suit. We have many good airlines, such as United Nigeria and Ibom Air, that can do it. Even Overland can do it. All they need is some encouragement. We will be ready to support them. “

FEARS

Minister of Aviation, Keyamo, said that Air Peace and other operators who want to embark on this international route must ensure that they have access to aircraft on dry leases. “If they don't have it, we cannot sustain the route for a very long time,” he added.

Dr Gbenga Olowo, who is also president /CEO, Sabre Network Africa, supports this view but suggests that the Federal Government should ensure the addition of other flag carriers to Air Peace, which will make for collaboration and healthy competition.

Explaining further, Olowo said, “Nigerian airlines, including Air Peace, must collaborate or interline with other foreign airlines as passengers going beyond London constitute more than 60 per cent or more of the traffic from Nigeria.

“When you’re not a monopoly, the game changes and you endeavour to satisfy the customer non-stop. The foreign airlines will also be put in maximum check as their excesses could have untold economic disadvantages.”

Fortunately for Air Peace, it has already secured a partnership with Norse Atlantic Airways, a UK carrier, which can provide the necessary backbone in equipment.

GOVERNMENT SUPPORT IS KEY

Even so, without government’s huge support, sustainability on a regular basis may prove tough for Air Peace, as can be seen in the price war that ensued immediately the airline slashed the London fare for its passengers who have taken the offer seriously and booked the airline till September 2024. After that, what next?

Already, other airlines that used to charge N15 million for first class and N5 million for economy class have crashed prices to about N5 million for Business Class and N1.9m for economy. Should September come and Air Peace is unable to foot the bill, the fares will in all likelihood climb back to their former rates.

From what Onyema called ‘under-pricing and a devilish conspiracy’ that would deal a blow to the cost of operation in less than a month, but, which in actual fact is a healthy competition for his more established rivals on the route, it is clear, as he himself has admitted, that the Nigerian Government has to offer some form of support to it, “as the home governments of those airlines are doing for them.”

Keyamo, who disclosed that he expected competitive prices with the advent of Air Peace on the route, agrees with Onyema. He said the Federal Government would support local operators in accessing lease arrangements like what Air Peace is doing today. Nigeria, he revealed, is on a blacklist to get these dry leases and he has been trying to assure the world and aircraft manufacturers, like Airbus, that their assets would be protected in Nigeria.

“This is because what they want is whether we can allow them to take these assets when there are breaches of agreements. The problem they always face is that when they bring their assets into the country, and there is a breach sometimes, because of court injunctions and local politics, they can no longer take their aircraft away. It is a huge loss to them. What they want is that they should be able to take these assets away when there is a breach,” he explained.

no problem of trapped funds, industry stakeholders, including the aviation minister, have said. Since Air Peace is a local company, the fear of repatriating the sale of tickets to the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, no longer exists.

In other words, the massive repatriation of funds by foreign airlines that puts pressure on the Naira will be reduced greatly.

“This new development eases the pressure on the Naira because this is a Nigerian company that deals in Naira and buys in Naira,” said Keyamo.

Also, on the heels of this development, the minister has set in motion a plan to resolve a major headache for Nigerian airlines, which still have to go abroad whenever they want to service their aircraft.

According to the minister, one of the major objectives is to bring in the Maintenance, Repair Overhaul, MRO into Nigeria. That is very important, he said, because “it is the key to unlocking this industry.”

The Acting NACA D-G, Capt Najomo, who was on the Air Peace inaugural flight to London alongside Keyamo, his Industry, Trade and Investment counterpart, Doris Uzoka-Anite, and Foreign Affairs Minister, Yusuf Tuggar, as well as Senate Committee Chairman on Aviation, Buhari Abdulfattai, among others, disclosed that the agency had given the airlines on that route 21 frequencies to checkmate attempts by competitors to cripple the Nigerian airline.

He said, “The ‘aeropolitics’ following the Air Peace stride was expected. It has been there even when I used to fly Arik Air to London. Now because there is a Nigerian carrier on that route, we have given the airlines 21 frequencies. This is just the beginning. It will be there and they will try all sorts of ways to cripple them, but I want to use this opportunity to tell the FG to make a policy that Nigerians, government officials must fly Air Peace. The Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, Mrs Olubunmi Kuku, gave the assurance that the necessary infrastructure – slots, check-in counter, security and landing aids – would be provided for Air Peace to remain competitive on the new route.

Other airlines have also been impacted by this new development. Chairman, United Nigeria Airlines, Prof Obiora Okonkwo, said the Air Peace move will ginger others, particularly his airline, to open international designation routes soon.

He said, “For us, this is more than a motivation. It is a certification that it can be done. So, I have no doubt that the next carrier that will come on board is United Nigeria Airlines.”

Okonkwo urged Nigerians to resist whatever international opposition by making Air Peace and other Nigerian airlines that will come on board their first choice airline before any other operator.

For the poster boy of this aviation renewal, Onyema, the real heroes for his airline’s current triumph are Nigerians passengers and President Bola Tinubu and his team of ministers who have created the enabling environment for him to make the bold move.

“This is the kind of support airlines are asking for. The Nigerian Government and the people have shown that this is a Nigerian project. Air Peace does not belong to Allen Onyema. It belongs to over 220 million Nigerians who are here and abroad and they have shown their love,” Onyema said.

Automatic Employment to Ex-Corps Member

Miss Arit Abam, an ex-corps member, has been offered automatic employment by the Cross River State Government.

Abam became popular recently when she returned to her home in an unspecified part of Cross River State after completing the compulsory national service.

Upon getting to her father's house, she filmed herself marching towards him. With a military-style salute, she thanked her father and handed her NYSC uniform and cap to him.

She subsequently posted the video on social media, with a touching note of gratitude and a charge to youths not to be ashamed of their humble backgrounds; which eventually went viral.

While offering Abam the appointment, the Governor of Cross River State, Bassey Out, charged the youth in the state and beyond to emulate her action, which he described as worthy of reward.

Governor Otu lauded Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Enoh, for his decision to build a house for the ex-corps member and her family. He said it was exemplary and a confirmation of the bond between the two sister states.

Governor Otu gave Miss Abam the privilege to choose any ministry, department or agency she would prefer to work within the state civil service.

THEWILL recalls that Governor Eno, touched by Arit Abam’s expression of gratitude and the story of her father's sacrifice to see his child through school, recently sent a delegation to Ugep in Yakurr Local Government Area of Cross River State for some background checks.

Upon the team's verification of the story, Eno pledged to build a three-bedroom flat for Mr Abam and family as recognition of his sacrifices.

APC Advocacy Group Praises Gov Eno, PDP Leadership in A’Ibom

An advocacy group acting under the aegis of “Renewed Hope Agenda” has celebrated the development strides of Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, and his leadership style within the last 11 months, even as it has challenged other state governors to emulate what the PDP leader is doing.

In a press statement released in Abuja by the DirectorGeneral of the group, Hajiya Zainab A. Ibrahim, and made available to journalists, the political group, which belongs to the All Progressives Congress (APC) and loyal to the Bola Tinubu Administration, particularly hailed Governor Eno for his bi-partisanship approach to governance, pointing out that Akwa Ibom currently ranks enviably high among the 36 states of the federation by virtue of the achievements it recorded in the last 11 months.

Hajiya Ibrahim poured encomiums on Governor Umo Eno for dismantling what she described as “the walls of political party pettiness in his style of leadership", noting that this and more have endeared the APC group to the governor. The statement reads in part, “We are members of the Advocates for Good Governance and Humanity, the Renewed Hope Agenda, which is a political group of the All Progressives Congress, APC. We work for the APC at the national level and are totally loyal to President Bola Tinubu's administration.

“As a good governance-driven group, we are delighted to observe the unprecedented governance shown by the Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, across sectors. Although he is of a different political party from ours, we are compelled to commend him to serve as a spur to other Nigerians occupying political positions.

“First of all, Governor Umo Eno has broken the walls of political party pettiness in his style of leadership. Renewed Hope Agenda observes with keen interest that immediately after the election, Governor Eno has reached out to all stakeholders in the Nigerian project irrespective of their political parties. Such is seen in his smooth relationship with President Bola Tinubu, Senate President, Godswill Akpabio and other top APC leaders across Nigeria."

The group listed some of the milestones recorded so far by the Umo Eno Administration, including a united Akwa Ibom, the disbursement of over N112 billion for road infrastructure since May 2023, funding of 39 new road Projects and the completion of old projects.

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has said that the new national Identity card, powered by AfriGo, is a single card with multiple services.

THEWILL earlier reported that NIMC, in collaboration with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Nigeria Interbank Settlement System (NIBSS), had appointed SecureID, a Lagos headquartered company, as first Manufacturer of the National Domestic Card Scheme, AfriGo Card.

NIMC had in a statement said the card will address the demand for physical identification enabling cardholders to prove their identity, access government and private social services, facilitate financial inclusion for disenfranchised Nigerians, empower citizens, as well as encourage increased participation in nation-building.

Speaking on the card, Head of Corporate Communications of the NIMC, Kayode Adegoke, said the General Multipurpose Card (GMPC) will eliminate the need for multiple cards.

“The new National ID Card is a single, convenient and General Multi-purpose Card (GMPC), eliminating the need for multiple cards—not three.

"The single GMPC has multiple use cases: Payments/ financial, government intervention/services, travel, etc.

“The National Identity Management Commission is working with the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Nigerian Interbank Settlement System to deliver the payment and financial use cases.

“The card will be powered by the AFRIGO card scheme, an indigenous scheme powered by NIBSS. Applicants for the card will have to request with their NIN through the selfservice online portal, NIMC offices, or their respective banks.

“The card will be issued through the applicants’ respective banks, in line with existing protocols with the issuance of the Debit/Credit cards.

“The card can be picked up by holders at the designated centre or delivered to the applicants at the requested location at an extra cost to be borne by the applicants,” he said

Ganduje vs Gov Yusuf: An Unfolding Public Drama

April 17, 2024, being the date fixed by a High Court in Kano State for the arraignment of a former Governor of the state and current National Chairman of the governing All Progressives Congress, APC, Alhaji Umar Ganduje, over the alleged ‘Gandollar saga’ in 2018, may come and go without much notice, just as it will continue to generate controversy in the public domain over time.

For one, the legal tussle between the Kano State Government and the former governor is standing in the way of a case. While the state government maintains that it has power to try the case, the former governor insists that “the so-called” bribery case is only within the jurisdiction of the federal courts.

According to the Attorney-General of the state and Commissioner for Justice, Alhaji Haruna Dederi, Section 211 of the 1999 Constitution and Sections 121(1), 126(b) and 377 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law, 2019, empowers him “to apply to prefer the charge attached herewith against the defendants.”

The Kano State High Court in the Judicial (N.N) Form 2 or “Summons to an Accused Person” stated that Ganduje is to be arraigned at 9 am before Justice Usman Na’aba, sitting in Courtroom 4 this coming Wednesday. He will be arraigned alongside his wife, Hafsat, son, Umar and five others on eight counts, bordering on $413,000 and N1.38bn bribery.

According to the charges, the state government alleged that, “You, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, sometime between the period of January 10, 2016 or thereabouts, at Kano in the Kano Judicial Division, while serving as the Governor of Kano State and being a public servant in the government of Kano State corruptly asked for and received the sum of $200,000 being benefit for yourself from one of the beneficiaries of contracts awarded by the Kano State Government on your instruction and approval as part of your function as the Governor of Kano State, thereby committing the offence of official corruption, contrary to and punishable under Section 22 of the Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-corruption Commission Law 2008 (as amended), Law No 2 of 2009, Laws of Kano State of Nigeria.”

In the second count, the state government said that Ganduje on February 10, 2017 “dishonestly and/or corruptly to your own advantage, collected a kick-back of the sum of $ 213,000, being money generated from people and entities seeking or holding the execution of Kano State Government contract and

or project for the remodeling of Kantin Kwari Textile Market as a bribe through one of the contractors (agent).”

In another count, the state alleged that Ganduje, between September 2020 and march 2021, “together with one Hafsat Umar (your spouse) and Abubakar Bawuro, a businessman, Safari Textile Ltd, a limited liability company, wholly owned and maintained by the 3rd defendant, agreed to do an illegal act to wit: dishonestly converted to your own use the sum of N1,376,000,000 through account No. 7085982019 belonging to the 3rd defendant being money earmarked and approved for the purchase and supply of face masks and other hospital equipment for the health sector, thereby causing wrongful loss to the people and the government of Kano State and thereby jointly committed the offence of criminal conspiracy, contrary to Section 96 and punishable under section 97 of The penal code (as amended) CAP,105, Vol.2. The Laws of Kano State of Nigeria, 1991.”

The Kano State Government said it had assembled 15 witnesses to testify against them.

THEWILL gathered that Jaafar Jaafar, the publisher of Daily Nigeria, an online publication which published the controversial video clip in 2018 showing Governor Ganduje stuffing his over flowing robes with wads of dollar currencies, is said to be ready to supply more of the videos. The videos have been reportedly authenticated by a forensic expert. He had fled to London following claims that his life was in danger.

Meanwhile, Ganduje has labelled his successor a vindictive politician who he accused of trying to undo his stellar performance as governor between 2015- 2023

The former governor’s spokesperson, Edwin Olofu, dismissed the statae government’s move as an attempt to malign his boss and waste state resources on a matter that was in the jurisdiction of the Federal Government.

He said, “I will simply urge those concerned to refer to the said judgment of the Federal High Court and take a cue from it so as to be well guided, in their attempt to prosecute, so that public funds will not be dissipated without achieving any success; more so to avoid what will be termed an abuse of court process.”

The Federal High Court in Kano on Tuesday, March 6 ruled that the Kano Public Compliant and Anti-Corruption Commission lacks the power to investigate Ganduje over an alleged bribery video. Justice Abdullahi Liman said the Kano Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission, KPCAC, was limited by law as the matter was a federal offence that could be prosecuted by the Attorney-General of the Federation and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

He said, “The offence is a federal offence and ought to have been reported before the Attorney-General of the Federation and Economic Finance Crimes Commission. The scope of the anti-corruption is limited to specific power to investigate federal offences.”

In his reaction, counsel for the anti-graft agency, Usman Umar Fari, said they would appeal the ruling at the Court of Appeal. Ganduje, through his counsel, Matthew Burkaa (SAN), had earlier filed a fundamental rights suit in July 2023 to restrain PCACC from arresting, investigating and inviting him in the alleged dollar video.

The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway Project

The 700-kilometre

Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway is a very important project that will benefit Nigerians on completion and therefore needs all the support from Nigerians.

Estimated to gulp a whopping N15.36 trillion or N4.39 billion per kilometre, tentatively, the Legacy Project, which is planned to be delivered within eight years, is the first of its kind, not only in the country but also in the entire West African sub-region and perhaps, Africa. The construction of the first phase of the super highway covering about 47.47km, starting from Lagos, has been awarded to Hitech Construction Company Limited.

The beauty of the project designed to connect Lagos to Cross River, passing through the coastal states of Ogun, Ondo, Delta, Edo, Bayelsa, Rivers and Akwa Ibom before culminating in Cross River, is the incorporation of a railway network along the route as it would provide an alternative to users who might want to go by rail.

For now, the Federal Government has assured that it will pay compensation to all genuine property owners along the route as the highway will be passing through

nine states, even as it has extended the time for eviction of those within the right of way of the project.

The Minister of Works, David Umahi, who gave the assurance recently at a stakeholders' meeting, said President Bola Tinubu had approved the payment of compensation to all affected property owners and residents who meet the necessary requirements and conditions listed by his ministry.

On the timeline for the multi-billion Naira project, the Minister said: ''The first 47 kilometres will be completed in 36 months, but with what they have done so far, I won't be surprised if they complete it in two years. Until we procure all the sections, we may not be able to say this is the exact time the project will be completed.”

We are however worried by the dimensions of controversy surrounding the project that is yet to take-off. This is to be expected considering the magnitude of the project, the financial outlay and the project executors, HITECH Construction Company. While shedding light on these aspects of the project which has generated public comments and doubts, Umahi said the project would be executed as a Private Public Partnership and the construction company has already sourced the funds for

the project, which spoke to public doubts that the project passed through proper tender and due process: There was no competitive bidding and controversy continues to trail cost of the project and the demolition of things on its path.

While we salute the Federal Government for embarking on such a project that has social and economic import as it would connect Nigerians in the twinkle of an eye and provide room for interactions and markets on a larger scale, we are constrained to call for close monitoring and proper information to Nigerians at every stage of the project’s execution so as to ensure that all the metrics meet the expectations of the citizenry.

We therefore call for more understanding and cooperation for the project, even as we advocate genuine and sincere resolution of all contending issues and cases relating to the project, especially property and infrastructure that will be affected by the project.

The contractors should also be monitored effectively to fully deliver and timely, too, on the expectations of the government and the people of Nigeria in order for the project not to suffer the fate that befell the rehabilitation of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

Mr President, Tackle Corruption

Iwas in a conversation with a friend a few days ago. The fellow asked angrily, “Is Nigeria cursed? Why is it that Nigeria is so rich, yet her people are so poor and suffering?” I responded that corruption and bad governance are to blame. Simple.

Nigeria is known worldwide to be among the richest countries in the world, but very unfortunately, her people languish in abject poverty, suffering all manner of diseases and sickness, as well as and lagging behind, in terms of infrastructural development, yet her political elite are VERY wealthy. No thanks to corruption and bad governance unleashed on the country by the present generation of political leaders.

THE ENEMIES OF NIGERIA, ACCORDING TO THE 1966 REVOLUTIONARIES, REMAIN THE POLITICAL PROFITEERS, THE SWINDLERS, THE MEN IN HIGH AND LOW PLACES WHO SEEK BRIBES AND DEMAND 10 PERCENT, AND THOSE THAT SEEK TO KEEP THE COUNTRY DIVIDED PERMANENTLY SO THAT THEY CAN REMAIN IN OFFICE AS MINISTERS OR VIPS

Nigeria is described as one of the failed states in the world, although this is open for debate. The country does not lack intelligent men and women, as well as highly educated citizens. Nigeria does not lack mineral, economic and financial resources, but we are a country suffering from poor leadership, a country whose leaders swim conveniently in corruption. The corruption and bad governance among our leaders have completely wiped away any modicum of respect from the outside world. Corrupt or sharp practices are now seen as ways of life in Nigeria. Since 1999, when the country returned to democracy, the executive and legislative arms of government have perfected criminal windows at looting the treasury with impunity.

Many have declared that Nigeria’s oil and gas reserves are so enormous to transform her economy, if only well managed. But, since the discovery of oil and gas in the country back in the 1950s, the Nigerian people's living conditions have worsened. It is all due to the corruption and bad governance woven around the system. Today, in Nigeria, our crude is taken outside, refined and shipped back for local consumption. No oil-producing country does this. None of our four refineries is working. They are all comatose. The only reason why these refineries are not working can be traced to corruption and bad governance visited on the country by our leaders past and present.

Our electricity is in a very terrible shape. There is no light anywhere in Nigeria. The people are charged for what they never consumed. From Kafanchan to Ilorin to Maiduguri, Umuahia to Badagry, Ogoja to Asaba, the story of our electricity is the same – darkness everywhere. It is only in Nigeria that people pay for electricity tariffs they never consumed. If we must fight corruption, then it must be all-encompassing. Every sector and individual must be made to answer for any wrongdoing. It is difficult but that is the way to go. The recent budget padding allegation, levelled against the Senate by a member of theirs is an act of corruption that should have been investigated, findings made public and culprits made to face punishment. But this is Nigeria, where we have untouchable men and women in power. The soft landing provided by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the senate members only emboldened the perpetrators of the budget padding more.

The enemies of Nigeria, according to the 1966 revolutionaries, remain the political profiteers, the swindlers, the men in high and low places who seek bribes and demand 10 percent, and those that seek to keep the country divided permanently so that they can remain in office as ministers or VIPs. Nigeria cannot survive its economic pain, and arrest its fall until we decide to fight corruption to a standstill. No country on earth can survive monumental corruption. Former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Mrs Betta Edu and her predecessors, are involved in a financial scandal. That they are roaming the streets of Nigeria free is disturbing. That is certainly not the best way to fight corruption. The EFCC claimed to have recovered about N30 billion that the ministers diverted to private accounts. Why the agency is pussyfooting on arresting and prosecuting these women for their financial recklessness while in office is mind-boggling. This kind of measure sends the wrong signal to the outside world that we are not a serious country. In other climes, Mrs Edu and all those involved in such fleecing would have gone for tutorials at our Correctional Home.

The EFCC appears to be full of energy in tracking, arresting and prosecuting cybercrime offenders. Its operatives display their muscles on Bobrisky and others for spraying naira notes at occasions. But they develop cold feet and remind us of laws going after political criminals. What has happened to the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, Sen. Orji Uzor Kalu and the corrupt allegations hanging on their necks? What will happen to Alhaji Ganduje, his wife and associates? It is the political criminals that have pulled the country down to its knees. The commission and its Chair must brace up and go after the political criminals more because they are the country’s real albatross. Not long after, Customs was in the news for corruption cases. About N12 billion was traced to the private accounts of its officers. One officer alone had about N9billion in his account. The EFCC or ICPC have not ensured that these fellows answer to their misdeeds. The story so far has been swept under the carpet. All the Customs officers are back to their duty post like nothing happened. What a way to fight corruption!

History made it clear that Malaysia, Singapore and Taiwan are some of the countries Nigeria were in the same frequency back in the day, but have left Nigeria in developmental achievements. While Nigeria’s leaders are driven majorly by pecuniary interest, the leaders of the three countries above are driven by patriotism and love for the country. In Nigeria, since 1999, no former president, vice president, minister, lawmaker, or Governor, has not become an instant billionaire. How would Nigeria move forward?

Citizens Civic Responsibility: Tersoo David Ukechir Example

Certainly, this is not the best of times for Nigeria. Every socio-economic index is a pointer that Nigeria is at its lowest level. Government at all levels and citizens across religious, ethnic and political divides are unanimous that Nigeria deserves better than its present status.

Unarguably, the primary responsibility of governments is the welfare and safety of the citizenry. But a government or a nation is what the citizens make of it. In other words, Nigeria’s problem has since shifted from leadership deficit to followership failure, otherwise, how can a government deliver on its mandate when the people deliberately alienate themselves from the scheme of things?

No one seemingly recognises their fundamental rights and privileges and obligations to fellow citizens, the immediate community and then the country.

However, in most cases where they pay attention to their rights, they ignore their responsibility to others. It is this absence of civic responsibility that has continued to undermine Nigeria’s efforts at attaining a just, virile and prosperous economy and democracy.

But, what is civic responsibility? It is simply “a socially good behaviour to perform” towards a nation’s ordered social and economic development. It is a veritable tool in the hands of the citizenry to actualize the country of their dream. And whereas civic duty is mandatory civic responsibility is only morally compelling yet easy to perform. Sequel to weak institutions, civic duties can be evaded without consequences but the repercussions of citizens’ failure to discharge their civic responsibilities are enormous.

Succinctly put, civic responsibility, closely related to philanthropy, is all about freely giving back to society. It is about love for the country and fellow citizens. It is about selfless service to humanity. It entails doing what will inspire the government or leadership to deliver optimally on its mandate, to the advantage of the people and society. It is about patriotism and national interest. It is a global best practice.

To further underscore the importance of citizens’ civic responsibility, the Senate at its consideration of a motion on the recent killing of Nigerian Army personnel in Okuama Community, Delta State, among others, urged the Federal Government to “embark on enlightenment campaign to sensitize the public on their civic responsibilities as it affects their relationship with security agencies”.

Also, in yet another motion on the challenges of out-of-school children in Nigeria, the Senate called on the critical stakeholders to trigger “the national consciousness through sensitisation and advocacy on the importance of education to the growth and development of our country and the benefits of having majority educated population”.

Empirically, in the same manner that the legislature connects the people to governance, civic responsibility connects the citizens to the government. It facilitates popular participation in the scheme of things as it empowers the citizens to demand accountability from governments and also challenge underperformance or anti-people policies at all levels and tiers of governance.

For instance, when people do not participate in choosing their leaders or express interest in guiding

governments to performance, how then do they expect democratic dividends such as a stable economy and enhanced security?

Again, how do the masses expect national development when they downplay patriotism and nationalism or especially, withhold their due respect to fellow citizens and constituted authorities?

FAMILY VALUES ARE TODAY IN VERY SHORT SUPPLY DUE TO FAILURE ON THE PART OF PARENTS TO BECOME MODELS TO THEIR CHILDREN, JUST AS MOST RELIGIOUS LEADERS HAVE UNFORTUNATELY DEVIATED FROM MORAL GROOMING OF THE FAITHFUL

Furthermore, why will the government not be negligent to the masses or corruption, incompetence and high magnitude of wastage in governance not fester when the citizens are defined by apathy and hostility towards the government?

Worse still, family values are today in very short supply due to failure on the part of parents to become models to their children, just as most religious leaders have unfortunately deviated from moral grooming of the faithful.

Quoting from a publication titled Farewell to Democracy in Nigeria, “we brazenly ridicule our symbol of democracy and the conscience of the nation merely for political expediency. We allow our emotions to overwhelm us in our criticisms. We forget that the disparaging remarks are not just about the legislators. It is about their families and constituencies. It is about the offices they occupy. It is about the totality of these Nigerians who have sacrificed their privacies and liberties to serve us. It is about the legislature as an institution and bastion of democracy. It is about the sustainability of democracy. It is about our future and posterity”.

Continuing, “what we say or write about the legislature is a reflection of what the world thinks about Nigeria as a country. Foreign investment opportunities are threatened. The zeal to serve and passion for patriotism in public office decline with attendant increases in poverty and corruption. If only we could ponder the harm done to the image and reputation of Nigeria, how our flags and passports are viewed and how our nationals studying abroad feel among their peers, in the face of what exists on the internet about our legislature”.

How Zenith Bank Plc Built

Notwithstanding the huge opportunity provided by the massive devaluation of the naira, Nigeria’s import of agricultural goods have continued to rise against the value exported.

Economic experts identify increase in export of locally produced commodities as a major benefit of devaluation of a country’s domestic currency as it will lead to higher earnings.

However, the case has been different in Nigeria since the devaluation of the naira by over 200 percent against the dollar in June 2023.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) in its ‘Foreign Trade in Goods Statistics’ report for Q4, 2023, Nigeria imported agricultural products worth N711.14 billion against N463.97 billion it exported during the period.

This constituted a balance of trade deficit of N247.17 billion or 53.27 percent of this segment of the foreign trade in goods statistics for the period.

The report showed that the N711.14 billion agricultural goods imported during the period represents a 10.48 percent and 59.97 percent when compared with the values recorded in Q3 of 2023 (N643.68 billion), and the corresponding quarter of 2022 (N444.82 billion) respectively.

However, the N463.97 billion agricultural goods exported in Q4 2023, showed an increase of 110.91 percent over the N219.99 billion recorded in the preceding quarter of the same year.

N20.36trn Balance Sheet in 2023 - Set For Holding Structure

Zenith Bank Plc, Nigeria’s most capitalised financial services institution (N1.3 trillion), took a huge advantage of its industry leadership to build a historic balance sheet of N20.36 trillion in 2023. The quantum leap in the group’s balance sheet expansion constitutes a 65.8 percent rise against the N12.28 trillion in the preceding year.

According to its audited financial report for the FY ended December 2023 filed with the Nigerian Exchange (NGX) last week, the group grew asset base by N8.08 trillion - the highest growth rate (65.8 percent) in a space of one year, based on data from its previous annual reports.

The impressive performance underscores the group’s transition to a holding structure which is work-in-progress and could be actualised in the coming days, according to analysts and documents seen by THEWILL. “Zenith Bank is at the verge of emerging a holdco organisation in the nearest future. Its impressive 2023 performance offers a strong ground to actualise this goal and, also, enables the group to meet the new N500 billion recapitalisation requirements of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) for banks with international spread like Zenith Bank,” said Sunday Buraimoh, a finance expert.

The strong asset base recorded by the group in 2023 accrued from various earnings channels that recorded significant growth, thus boosting the group’s profits during the period.

Leading the massive growth in revenue is gross earnings of N2.13 trillion. This represents a growth of 125.4 percent year-on-year and is the highest gross earnings ever reported in the group’s history.

The bank also reported a net interest income of N736.18 billion, more than double what was reported in the previous year. Profit before tax rose to N795.96 billion, against N284.65 billion in 2022, constituting a 179.6 percent increase, while profit after tax rose by 202 percent to N679.9 billion against N223.91 billion, setting another significant record for the

group.

Data from the financial report further revealed that the group accrued an FX revaluation gain of N228.98 billion, marking a substantial appreciation of 808.6 percent from the N25.2 billion gain that accrued in 2022.

The bank has not seen special interest income grow anything close to that record in its many years of trading. THEWILL reports that the CBN had directed banks not to pay dividends from the windfall but to ‘quarantine’ the forex revaluation gains for the rainy day.

Additionally, the group grossed handsome revenues from net income on fees and commission which yielded N109.31 billion; while trading gains pooled N566.97 billion, representing a 166.6 percent increase – all yearon-year.

A significant contributor to fees and commission income for Zenith Bank during the fiscal year was electronic product fees, which amounted to N51.8 billion, marking a 13.3 percent increase from the N45.7 billion posted in 2022.

Interest on loans and advanes reflected the expansion in loan book as the bank earned a whopping N671.72 billion compared to N320.48 billion harnessed from interest on the facilities during the preceding period. On the same growth trajectory, fees from electronic products rose from N45.73 billion in 2022 to N51,81 billion.

However, the bank paid more on (human capital) outsourcing which climbed to N24.87 billion during the review period, from N14.75 billion in the previous year, a significant increase of 68.6 percent.

cost during the year as the bank paid N41.7 billion compared to N27.64 billion in the previous year on this expenditure head, representing an increase of 50.8 percent.

In 2023, the group’s capital adequacy ratio climbed to 22 percent, up from 20 percent in 2022.

The buoyant group recorded earnings per share of N21.55 compared to N7.14 in the previous year, a 201.8 percent growth; while it expanded its loan book (Loans and Advances to customers) to N6.57 trillion against N4.01 trillion, or a 63.4 percent growth.

During the review period, total shareholders’ equity climbed by a 68.5 percent to N2.32 trillion as against N1.37 trillion, while retained earnings: hit N1.17 trillion against N625 billion in the preceding year representing a growth of 8.7 percent.

The company has proposed final dividend of N3.50 per share bringing the total for the year to N4 per share.

To make adequate accommodation for the regulatory threshold of 65 percent loan-to-deposit ratio, the bank allocated a substantial provision of about N409.6 billion which led to a significant reduction in its net interest income.

This could be to play safe in accommodating the stringent CBN regulations that forbid the banks from utilising their huge retained earnings for dividend payments. This came on the heels of the regulator’s recent directive to banks to exclude retained earnings from the calculation of their share capital.

...Imports N711.14bn, Exports N463.9bn in Q4 ’23

It also showed a rise of 171.97 percent when compared with the N170.59 billion achieved in the corresponding quarter of the previous year.

According to NBS, during this quarter, most agricultural products were exported to Asia, valued at N270.65 billion, followed by Europe with N164.23 billion.

Export of agricultural products was dominated by ‘Sesamum seeds’ valued at N124.49 billion followed by ‘Superior quality Cocoa beans,’ with N100.66 billion and ‘Soya beans (excluding seeds)’ with N67.31 billion. Analysis by direction of trade reveals that ‘Sesamum seeds’ worth N45.04 billion and N29.18 billion were exported to China and India, respectively. Furthermore, ‘Superior quality Cocoa beans,’ worth N60.58 billion and N22.69 billion were exported to the Netherlands and Malaysia respectively, followed by exports of ‘Soya beans (excluding seeds)’ worth N35.80 billion and N24.61 billion to India and Pakistan, respectively.

On the other hand, the major agricultural goods imported in Q4, 2023 included ‘Durum wheat (not in seeds)’ from Latvia with N111.72 billion and Poland with N74.67 billion. This was followed by ‘Malt Not roasted.’ from Belgium and The Netherlands valued at N15.26 billion and N12.15 respectively.

Reacting to the report, a Finance expert, Kalu Aja, expressed disappointment over the dominant role of oil and gas in Nigeria’s foreign exchange earnings despite the trite called diversification. He suggested a strategic implementation of a robust and realistic plan for the development of the agricultural sector.

“I looked up the trade numbers for Nigeria to understand where the forex needed to strengthen the naira would come from. I was not impressed.

“Oil exports alone account for 81% of total exports. Put it this way: If you doubled Agricultural exports ten times, you would not get half of what Nigeria gets from crude oil and gas exports.

“So, in the short term, we must stop the distracting talk of “let’s diversify exports,” etc.; that’s a long-term goal. Today’s goal must be to grow oil exports to generate FX for the economy.

“Solid Minerals exports are “audio”; I won’t waste time discussing them. The folks illegally mining gold and other precious minerals and exporting know what they are doing. Suffice it to say it is criminal negligence for a nation with lithium, uranium, gold, silver, etc. deposits to deliver N35b a quarter on solid minerals exports,” he said.

Aja, who wrote on his X handle said, “Folks, we have been playing since 1970 with ‘agriculture.’ Nigerians have confused what we see villagers do with hoes and cutlass. Apologies to the hardworking farmers, but Nigeria needs to develop a cash crop export infrastructure. It’s surprising that the entire agriculture value chain in Nigeria delivers only N125b a quarter from the top earner in that quarter.

“Thus, Nigeria has to get serious about diversifying its earning base. Nigeria carries a vast and critical risk in that it depends heavily on crude oil and gas to earn dollars. Nigeria is potentially one global crisis or recession away from being bankrupt if she does not diversify away from a single main FX earning base.”

Guaranty Trust Holding Mulls $750m Capital Raise

Guaranty Trust Holding Plc (GTCO) is intending to seek shareholder approval next month to raise up to $750 million in capital.

This initiative aligns with the efforts of other banks to bolster capital reserves in order to meet new regulatory targets.

The Central Bank of Nigeria last month announced minimum capital requirements for banks to strengthen the country’s financial system and enable lenders to play a bigger role in boosting economic growth.

According to Reuters News, Guaranty Trust Holding Plc, which owns Guaranty Trust Bank, one of Nigeria’s top tier lenders, said on Friday it would ask shareholders for permission to raise the funds at a meeting set for May 9, 2024.

Some banks including Access Holding, FBN Holdings and Fidelity Bank Plc have announced capital raising plans in the recent past.

More than 20 banks in Nigeria will need to

raise extra capital within two years to meet the central bank’s new threshold.

The regulator has said lenders require extra buffers to support Nigeria’s economic growth ambitions, especially after two large devaluations in the local naira currency since June last year.

Credit ratings agency Fitch has said that it expected a marked increase in equity issuance by Nigerian banks over the next two years and also mergers as some mid-sized or small lenders could struggle to raise capital.

Guaranty Trust Holding said it could issue shares or bonds in Nigeria or internationally to raise the funds.

THEWILL reports that GTCO reported profit before tax of N609.3billion for the full year 2023, representing an increase of 184.5% over N214.2billion recorded in the corresponding year ended December 2023.

2023, while deposit liabilities grew by 63.7% from N4.61 trillion in December 2022 to N7.55 trillion in December 2023.

Full Impact Capital Adequacy Ratio (CAR) remained very strong, closing at 21.9%, while asset quality was sustained as IFRS 9 Stage 3 Loans improved to 4.2% in December 2023 from 5.2% December 2022. However, Cost of Risk (COR) closed at 4.5% from 0.6% in December 2022 owing to worsening macros which caused significant increase in ECL variables.

What do you make of the saying that nations that actively encourage and empower their womenfolk perform better and rank higher on the global human development index?

In a world where progress and development are paramount, the empowerment of women plays a pivotal role. This correlation is not a mere coincidence; it reflects the profound impact of gender equality and women’s empowerment on societal well-being. Although every individual, regardless of gender, should be valued, respected, and included, women have however not enjoyed this because historically, women have faced discrimination and marginalisation. Luckily, we are beginning to break down barriers, challenge stereotypes in the workplace and creating a more equitable and inclusive world for all. The world should learn to encourage us, celebrate the achievements of women from diverse backgrounds, amplify their voices, and work towards a future where every woman feels empowered and included.

The world should be committed to fostering a culture of inclusivity, diversity, and equality, not just today, but every day. Together, we can inspire change, uplift women around the world, and create a more inclusive and equitable society for all.

Despite the efforts of women and their contribution to development, they remain under-represented in politics, governance and at the helm of large corporate organisations. What do you think can trigger the progress of today’s women?

Inclusion can trigger efforts that foster the progress of today’s women by promoting a culture of support and empowerment. When women feel valued and included in their communities and workplaces, they are more likely to succeed. This can also spark initiatives to address inequalities and promote gender equality by raising awareness of the challenges facing women. By advocating equal opportunities and supporting women in leadership roles, then we can drive meaningful change.

Also, by showcasing diverse women’s achievements and providing role models, women can be empowered to overcome obstacles and reach new heights in their lives. Ultimately, it has the potential to create a more inclusive and diverse world where women can thrive and lead with confidence.

There should be a reignition, a renewed commitment towards addressing the under-representation of women in politics, governance and top leadership roles within large corporate organisations. By highlighting the importance of inclusivity and diversity, it has the potential to spark meaningful conversations, drive policy changes and empower women to break barriers and shatter glass ceilings, as well as a call to action for increased support, advocacy and initiatives aimed at promoting gender equality and creating a more inclusive society where women are given equal opportunities to thrive and lead.

How would you describe women and leadership roles in Nigeria?

In Nigeria, women have made progress in leadership despite challenges. The country’s patriarchal society traditionally limited women’s access to leadership roles. However, there has been a shift towards greater inclusion of women in politics, with female politicians holding key government positions. Women still face barriers like cultural norms and discrimination.

In the corporate sector, Nigerian women have advanced in leadership, but gender stereotypes persist. Challenges such as unequal pay and work-life balance hinder women’s progress. At the grassroots level, Nigerian women lead in sectors like education and healthcare. However, they lack recognition and support. To enhance gender equality in leadership, addressing systemic barriers, promoting inclusive policies, offering mentorship, and challenging stereotypes are essential. Empowering women in leadership can drive sustainable development and progress in Nigeria.

There are over 1,000 employees in Optiva Capital Partners across major cities in Nigeria. Of this workforce, about 80 per cent are mainly youths who you mentor. How did this passion for mentorship take root?

I am passionate about promoting and empowering youths, even women, in

Nigeria. It is something that is innate.

What advice would you give to young people struggling against current economic challenges in the country?

In the dynamic economic landscape of today, young individuals are confronted with a multitude of challenges that may seem overwhelming. They need to arm themselves with the requisite skills and mindset, not only to endure but also to excel in the face of adversity. My advice to young people is to focus on continuous learning and skill enhancement. Given the ever-evolving nature of the economy, staying updated on current market trends and technologies can provide a competitive advantage in the job market. Cultivating resilience and adaptability is also crucial, as economic fluctuations are inevitable.

By fostering a resilient attitude and the ability to adapt to change, they can navigate economic uncertainties more effectively and emerge stronger. Building relationships with mentors and peers through networking can offer valuable guidance and growth opportunities in times of economic turmoil. Taking a proactive and entrepreneurial approach to career development is key in a competitive job market. Initiating action, exploring new prospects, and being open to calculated risks can distinguish them from their peers. Finally, emphasising financial literacy and prudent money management is vital. Acquiring knowledge of fundamental financial principles like budgeting, saving, and investing can empower them to make informed decisions and secure their financial well-being in uncertain circumstances.

In what way does your firm support the entrepreneurial drive of young people, many of whom are beginning to generate income from legitimate sources and enterprises? We have a policy to help and enable local entrepreneurs. At what point did you become an investment, immigration and wealth management expert?

My journey has been one filled with accomplishments and this is evident in my continuous growth. I joined Optiva Capital Partners in September 2013 as a relationship management executive. The chairman didn’t know me from anywhere, but he believed in me and he challenged me. The truth is that I love a good challenge. When I set my mind to do something, nothing can stop me. He identified my strengths and weaknesses and began to train me. He built an extreme hunger for success in me and I was recognised consistently as the top salesperson. From there, I grew to become General Manager and right now, I’m the Executive Director of Business Development. I am in charge of building a high-performance organization overseeing 21 branches and my responsibilities include implementing business strategies, work tools for business development, training and development of the team, institutional operations, branch expansion, identifying key results business strategies, and social media marketing.

What are the other things that occupy your time?

As the Executive Director, I’m in charge of the development and implementation of business development strategies, institutional operations, branch expansion strategies, training and development of the business development team. As a wife, I take care of and manage everything in the home with precision and spend quality time with my husband.

Who or what do you consider as the greatest influence in your life?

Mr. Franklin Nechi has been and still is a great influence in my life. He is the Chairman of Optiva Capital Partners. He motivated me and redirected my energy and focus to be a person of significance by identifying my strengths and weaknesses and began to train me. He built an extreme hunger for success in me, elevated my trust in God and trained me to be mentally tough, the kind of mental toughness that helped me to glide through the challenges of life unfazed.

The chairman is a visionary. We call him the Odogwu of Optiva! According to him, equipping a woman is like equipping a generation and this reflects greatly at Optiva Capital Partners as 70 per cent of our workforce are women. The chairman believes that women as nurturers give in everything when given an opportunity.

What else do you do when you are not implementing business development strategies?

My vibrant personality extends to my exquisite fashion taste and passion for writing, travelling and dancing.

IFEANYI UBAH AND COSMAS MADUKA SETTLE DIFFERENCES

It looks like this is a season of reconciliation between warring friends and associates. Just as businessman, Femi Otedola and banker, Tony Elumelu have buried their hatchet, so has Cosmas Maduka, businessman and founder of Coscharis, a colossus with tentacles spread across major auto luxury brands – Range Rover, BMW, Ford, Jaguar and Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, businessman and politician also reconciled after many years of feuding. Maduka who lost his wife about two years ago resolved to let bygones be bygones. According to him, as a bornagain Christian, he has since put the events of 2011/2012 behind him adding that both of them have since moved on because forgiveness is at the core of his faith, and he therefore has no choice but to forgive Ubah. He now calls Ubah his brother and friend (even though he is at least 15 years older than the politician). He also said that he has not only visited the Senator in his house and eaten with him, he (Maduka) has also hosted him too in his home. About 13 years ago, Maduka in spite of warnings from several people, so many uncomplimentary remarks about Ubah and numerous red flags which included negative reports from Nigerian bankers, plunged in, head long, in a bid to rescue his supposed ‘kid brother’ who he didn't quite know too well. Ubah at the time he approached Maduka

for help owed Union bank N40 billion. He then approached Maduka who was on the board of Access Bank to help him out while playing the ethnic card. By the time things which started smoothly went dramatically pear-shaped, on the table were a myriad of issues –missing or diverted consignments of petroleum products, possible diversion of over $200 million off letters of credit that had been opened to facilitate procurement, possible diversion of vessels and alleged subsidy fraud of over N4 billion, being payment received for products that were not delivered, as bills of lading were in the custody of the bank. It was a mess. Maduka had, out of trust, given him a lifeline while putting Access Bank in a difficult situation. Ubah owed him N21 billion and had no plans to pay but kept promising to pay with no clear path to redemption. Ubah simply robbed Maduka in broad daylight. This prompted Maduka to write a petition against him to the then Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, brandishing Ubah as an international fraud and a threat against the state. Maduka even sued him in London over his worldwide assets. He vowed not to allow Ubah walk away with his money. Ubah would later turn round and accuse him of stealing his N4.5 billion. He in turn also petitioned the IGP alleging that Maduka was threatening his life. The long and short of the story is that Ubah never paid back and Maduka because of the principle of his faith has now forgiven him his atrocities. Their rancour has now come to a final end.

FRED AJUDUA TURNS CLERIC Ajudua

Fred Ajudua is now a born-again Christian committed to winning souls for Jesus Christ. He is the pastor of an unnamed church in Ibusa, his hometown in Delta State. Ajudua seems to have come out of hibernation after spending several years behind bars and in courthouses trying to extricate himself from paying heavy penalties for his past mistakes. For a while, the 63-year-old was a political activist who used his connection and influence to decide the political outcome of those who care to pay homage to him.

back as friends as they appeared all chummy with each other. They pumped fists, hugged lightly, back slapped like in the days of old and laughed heartily to each other's jokes. They both sat next to each other on the same table at the wedding party and took pictures together while ensuring no one came between them as they smiled for the cameras. The camaraderie they displayed was pleasing to some of the guests, particularly their mutual friends who found themselves at the centre of their once broken friendship. It does appear as if both of them had a jolt on realising that life was too short to contemplate keeping malice with each other instead of finding ways to resolve their differences.

About a year ago, both men were not on speaking terms, no thanks to Otedola's stealthy moves to take over Transnational Company of Nigeria from Elumelu. Unfortunately, his plans backfired as both businessmen reached a deal on the control of Transcorp, with Elumelu buying back Otedola's shares at a premium and consolidating his hold on the company.

While Elumelu chose to publicly speak highly of his friend

and his business acumen, despite that almost successful takeover, Otedola rather than reciprocate the gesture, went to town with how Elumelu betrayed him businesswise on at least two occasions. Shortly after Otedola's revelation, both friends stopped speaking to each other. This was evident during the lavish 80th birthday party of Hajia Bintu-Fatima Tinubu, mother of the Chief Executive Officer of Oando Plc, Wale Tinubu. The tension that brewed between both men at the party was palpable. Both of them were seated at the same table and they barely exchanged words. To help douse the tension, businessman Sam Iwuajoku offered to sit between them to reduce the tension that could have conflagrated if he didn't make that move. After exchanging pleasantries with the celebrant, the host and a few guests, Elumelu exited the party without much ado.

After that party, both men began to avoid each other and ensured they both never attended events hosted by their mutual friends. Regardless of who first blinked or swallowed the humble pie, it is pleasing that they have chosen to put their differences aside.

Bono, Unseen Force Behind Mavin Records

Don Jazzy was reportedly contemplating a sale or seeking external investment. The Nigerian music community remained on the edge of their seats, eagerly awaiting further details about the future of Mavin Records. The potential sale or investment they believed should mark a pivotal moment in the label's history while opening up new possibilities and ventures for one of Africa's most influential music entities.

There were bids from major players like Universal Music Group (UMG) and HYBE, with valuation estimated between $125 million and $200 million with Shot Tower Capital, an independent investment bank, facilitating the negotiation process. Don Jazzy tried to set the records straight. Making clarifications, he revealed that the label had had investors for five years, but they were leaving and that naturally opened the door for other interested investors.

In 2019, the label had secured a multi-million dollars investment from Kupanda Holdings, a subsidiary of Kupanda Capital and TPG Growth. Don Jazzy attested that investors were bidding because Mavin Records possesses valuable assets. Valuable assets in this case meaning bankable artistes like Divine Okubor, aka Rema; Oyinkansola Sarah Aderibigbe aka Ayra Starr; Johnny Drille; Ladipo Eso, aka Ladipoe and several others, such as Charles Chibueze Chukwu aka Crayon; John Ighodaro; Alexander Adelabu, aka Magixx and five in-house producers. However, he kept mute about the specifics. THEWILL has exclusively gathered that Bono, the Irish

musician and activist who uses his celebrity status to call attention to global problems, is now the majority shareholder of Mavin Records. Bono, seeing the huge potential of Nigeria's burgeoning entertainment industry, especially as the country's artists have begun to dominate the international music scene, felt he needed to have a piece of the action. So, through one of his companies based in South Africa, he decided to make an inroad, albeit, silently, by facilitating the deal for UMG to make an investment bid on his behalf.

Like Lagos-based Musiliu Akinsanya, aka MC Oluomo, the Chairman of Parks Management Committee, Ajudua, who likes to refer to himself as the 'Architect of Modern Ibusa,' employed the politics of intimidation, thuggery, violence to achieve his political goals and many dared not complain, at least openly. As soon as the election season was over, he embraced a new venture as a land grabber. He was accused of land grabbing by Akwukwu Igbo residents and those of Ogbe-Iyase quarters in Akwukwu-Igbo of Oshimili North Local Government Area of Delta State. The residents claim that some persons in the community were conniving to grant him power of attorney to sell their lands. The residents at some point formed a protest group and pleaded with the Governor of the state, Sheriff Oborevwori, to assist in dissuading Ajudua from taking over their farmlands to avoid crisis and bloodshed in the community.

AThe deal, according to reliable sources close to THEWILL, involves him taking over the management of two of Mavin's biggest and bankable acts, Rema and Arya Starr. So, while Don Jazzy is the face of Mavin Records, Bono controls what happens in the record label, using UMG as a front. This further raises questions about how this could shape the label's creative direction and business operations. But hopefully it all turns out well and the label continues to champion artistic excellence and contribute to the vibrant landscape of African music. Mavin Records was founded in 2012, following the closure of Mo' Hits Records, a record label owned by Don Jazzy and his former partner, Dapo Oyebanjo aka D'Banj. In 2014, Nonso Temisan Ajufo, aka DJ Big N, became the label's official disc jockey. Tiwa Savage, Oluwatobi Wande Ojosipe aka Wande Coal, Ayoleyi Hanniel Solomon aka Reekado Banks and Iyanya Onoyom Mbuk were all formerly signed to the label at some point.

After seeing that the state government wasn't doing their bidding, some of the protesters got a court injunction restraining Ajudua from entering some portions of land, specifically the ones situated at and known as Umusaigba Farmland by Enugwu Atakpo Ibusa, behind Asaba airport. Fred ignored the court injunction and continued to trespass into the land, using agents of a real estate development firm, Property World Africa Network (PWAN Plus). What is worse is that the firm continued to advertise and sell some portions of the land which is a subject matter of litigation to unsuspecting members of the public. The aggrieved persons filed another motion and got another interim injunction restraining Ajudua and his agents from trespassing pending the determination of the motion on notice. Perhaps having found Christ now, old things will now finally pass away.

Gas as Economic Driver

The well groomed faces of men and women in the tiered hall of Nigeria Institute of International Affairs Victoria Island on 9 April 2024 could only have come from the Oil & Gas industry. Their skin glowed, many in bespoke jackets with expensive watches encircling fleshy wrists. Their faces had the confident look of those whose only worry is which European capital to spend the next vacation, which Ivy League institution to parcel off their wards and not the mundane things about life that bother the rest of us.

Former Minister of Petroleum Don Etiebet sat in the front pew, so with Austin Avuru former MD/ CEO of Seplat Petroleum. There were more than a dozen MDs and CEOs of as many O&G companies, from Gas Link to Platform. Though Chairman and founder of Tony Elumelu Foundation promised to spend a little time at the event, he sat all through from start to finish. So, what was the reason for that mid-morning gathering of moneybags from the O&G sector?

It was the public presentation of a first of its kind book on gas The Rise of Gas: From Gaslink to the Decade of Gas by Charles Osezua. The man himself is the quintessential Gas Man, dubbed so by one of the most influential figures, late Aret Adams, in the sector in Nigeria. The day in question was a public holiday but attendees turned up nonetheless, chauffeured to the venue by deferential drivers and Mobile Police escorts in starched uniforms and wellbuffed boots.

Starting off a little before 11, the MC Tony Kan, writer PR man promised it wouldn’t last more than two hours considering that some of the guests have other engagements. But first a prayer session led by Father Theo Akanya and then, as it happens at such public functions in Nigeria, the national anthem. The MC duly recognised many of the distinguished guests at the event but not before inviting to the podium the chairman of the day Basil Omiyi, Engineer Afolabi Oladele, Gloria Osezua, followed by her husband and author Charles, then Olumuyiwa ED Corporate Communications of NNPC.

Starting with the chairman’s opening address, the event was as much a congratulatory affair as it was a condemnatory session. Omiyi began by thanking the author for doing the sector a great service by writing a book on what stakeholders have generally overlooked focusing instead on crude oil. Along with Adams, Omiyi was sort of a mentor to Osezua at NNPC where the latter began his career as a youth corp member. “I am proud of you to have written a book on gas which no one has done before,” Omiyi said looking at the author the way a proud teacher will an outstanding student.

With hearts pounding with excitement and anticipation, the group succeeded in capturing the ethereal being, its iridescent scales glistening like precious gems in the dim glow of their torches. Ignoring the warnings that echoed in the recesses of their minds, they indulged in a feast fit for kings, devouring the mystical creature with reckless abandon.

But fate, with its cruel sense of irony, had other plans in store. Soon after partaking in the forbidden feast, the young man began to exhibit strange and alarming symptoms. His body contorted in unnatural ways, his skin tinged with an otherworldly glow and a peculiar boil emerged upon his brow, pulsating with an eerie luminescence reminiscent of the mermaid's own visage.

Commenting on the tragic incident, Mrs Lovina Benjamin Iduma, whose father was an herbalist in the village, said she had been told by her dad that mermaids do stay by the river bank or stream in the village.

''I had witnessed that sometimes a lady would sit in the water and I would pass and greet her. But soon, she would vanish into the rock,'' she told this reporter, adding, ''The deceased asked me to buy some parts of the fish, of which I refused to.''

Chief Victor Ezere, an elder from the village, said, ''Whenever we want to fish, the trap is removed overnight. That is a warning from the mermaid. But the deceased refused to heed to custom and the mystery behind it.''

For Mrs Blessing John Bassey, "Give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar. This is what Egwa did not want to accept. He refused the warning of the creature and landed now in the grave.''

According to Bassey, ''Also, it is not everything you see you eat. Nobody used to set traps on that side of the stream. Lovina's father was said to be from the water.''

She also went down the memory lane on the background of the whole incident.

''According to history, his mother was barren eating close to the stream while the food fell and she cried. Then, the mermaid came out from the rock and told her she knows her heart desires that she will have a child.

''The child was Lovina's father today and he was very handsome. It was this history we were told but a long throat has sent this man to the grave. They even said he would turn to a snake if he was treated, '' Bassey stated.

Through her unwavering commitment, NAFDAC recorded an astonishing 80 per cent reduction in the circulation of counterfeit drugs, a feat that not only safeguarded public health but also restored faith in the integrity of Nigeria's pharmaceutical industry.

Lastly, promoting transparency and accountability within regulatory agencies and the judicial system is paramount in combating corruption and collusion.
