CATBACKERS President’s Letter

On behalf of the Catbackers, I want to welcome you to the home of the Wildcats. Westminster is a place where high standards cultivate diverse community, creative leaders, and driven athletes. Our athletic programs provide opportunities for our student-athletes to pursue physical, mental, moral, and social development.

With more than 280 state championships, Westminster is the most awarded athletic program in Georgia. In short, it’s the Wildcat Way.

For over 40 years, Catbackers have supported Westminster’s Athletic Department, our student-athletes, and our coaches. The publication of the Green & White magazine allows us to honor our athletes during each sports season. We are grateful to have many advertisers and corporate sponsors that make this magazine possible.

Every Westminster family is a member of Catbackers. A Steering Committee of approximately 40 Mary Fletcher Higdon members governs our business and affairs throughout the school year. Our mission is simple: to foster community and support of all athletics at Westminster. Thanks to the generous backing of parents, local businesses and friends, along with alumni, we succeed by providing coaches with grants that offer amenities and tools for our teams. Such tools include new turf in the weight room for speed and agility training, new cameras for WCAT to broadcast games, new athletic equipment, increased student fan attendance at events, new uniforms, and many other ways of supporting the Athletic Department.

When COVID 19 interrupted our 2020 season, no one knew what was coming. We certainly didn’t know the effects it would have on our 2020-21 athletic season. Westminster has left no stone unturned in making sure we move forward safely for our students, faculty, and staff. So, this year’s sports seasons might look a little different and, in turn, this year’s Green & White might look a little different. Nonetheless, we move forward with the anticipation of sitting in the new Alfred E. Thompson Stadium, visiting our community plaza, working in a new and improved concessions stand, and watching our student-athletes play the sports they so dearly love. None of this would be possible without the support of our athletic staff and dedicated coaches.

We hope the opportunity to attend our sporting events is possible this year. We would love to have you join us to cheer for our studentathletes, volunteer in concessions, and purchase an advertisement in the Green & White. Wildcats

The 2019-20 sports season was shaping up to be a record setter for the Wildcats. Fall State Championships for Boys and Girls Cross Country and a runner-up finish for Volleyball were followed by Boys and Girls Swimming & Diving first place finishes in the winter. Spring sports were just hitting their stride, looking strong and then on March 12 it ended abruptly when the impact of COVID-19 required the suspension of athletic activities. Since we’re trained to give it our all until the horn blows, we held out hope for a resumption of the season but that hope faded on April 2 when the GHSA blew the final whistle for the 19-20 year. I was heartened by the creativity and care of our coaches as they maintained connections virtually with their teams, but obviously this couldn’t replace the disappointment of having a season interrupted, especially for our seniors. The response to the disappointment required us to draw on the lessons we learn from participation in sport, especially those lessons around resilience, discipline and leadership.

Our reintroduction to sport and campus over the summer was centered around our Strength and Conditioning program where we had a chance to employ the school’s return to school protocols. Our coaches were great at making sure our students were wearing masks, distancing, sanitizing and washing their hands and this set the stage for our 2020-21 academic and athletic year.

Typically the start of a sports season brings renewed hopes for an undefeated season and state championship. This year was going to be different. While those external benchmarks will remain important, our focus and priority must center around the true value of an athletic experience in an educational setting - the relationships developed and shared experiences. And once again we will turn to the lessons learned from sport of discipline, creativity and flexibility.

More than ever we will rely on Catbackers to celebrate our scholar athletes and our coaches. In the pages of the Green & White, you’ll see great examples of this creativity and flexibility. I have no doubt that the Westminster community is up to the challenge and am thankful for the unyielding support.

The profession of Athletic Training encompasses the prevention, examination, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of emergent, acute, or chronic injuries and medical conditions. Certified Athletic Trainers are highly qualified, multi-skilled health care professionals who work as part of a collaborative inter-professional health care team.

Westminster has a long history of providing the services of such professionals for athletes. Donna Hays, Head Certified Athletic Trainer, has been at Westminster since 1992. The program has grown over the years to include three full-time Certified Athletic Trainers, one part-time Certified Athletic Trainer and a team of students with an interest in medicine.

Our goal is to provide the highest quality care possible for middle school, junior varsity, and varsity athletes. We strive for accurate injury identification, swift return to activity, and education of the parent and the athlete.

Zachary Roe ‘20 and Mira Srinivasa ‘22

The @atlantatrackclub recognized Zachary and Mira as two of the area’s most accomplished cross country student-athletes by naming them to the 2019 Powerade All-Metro cross country team.

Matthew clinched the gold medal in the Boys 17-18 1500m race at the AAU Junior Olympic Games. Matthew clocked a 4:04.86 to take first place at the competition held in Florida.

Alex Bacchetta ‘22 and Charlie Wickliffe ‘20

Price Miller ‘22, Price won the 2020 Southeastern Junior Golf Tour Championship.

Alex & Charlie made the @ajcnews’ all-metro team, which consists of students from all Georgia High School Association classifications. In addition, Alex was named to the Class AAA all-state team.

Concessions, Corporate Ad Sponsors, Patrons And Team Booster Ads Through concessions, corporate advertisers, patron and team booster ads, the Catbackers are able to offer financial grants to the athletic department to enhance each and every program.

In 2019, we awarded two grants. We were involved in supporting an Adidas contract that will replace every uniform in the program over a three-year period. Catbackers also funded the purchase and installation of an indoor synthetic surface (9 feet wide x 40 yards long) within our Fitness Center. This has allowed us to expand our programming into speed and agility work where our strength and conditioning coaches provide hands on teaching and supervision of these activities in the same space as their strength work.

In 2018, we contributed to the funding for a new scoreboard in the Alfred E. Thompson Stadium. This scoreboard has video capabilities that allow us to celebrate teams and students in a fun and modern way as well as highlighting our scoreboard sponsors. It also allows our world-class student broadcast group (WCAT) to show off their talents.

CATBACKER CHEERLEADING SPOTLIGHT Why did you choose to become a Cheercat?

I was amazed with the connection that the cheerleaders have. My cheer team is like a bunch of sisters to me. I love the effect cheerleaders can have on the student section. It is a great feeling to be able to get the crowd excited for a game.

What has your sport given you?

My sport has given me the best four years anyone could ask for. Every year has gotten more fun. It has given me such fun experiences that I will remember forever.

What do you like about being an athlete?

I cherish the bond with other members of the team.

What advice would you give to someone younger than you?

Have fun! High school really does go by so fast. I learned from the pandemic that you have to take advantage of the time you have. You never know when something will be taken away from you.

Alejandro Villanueva, offensive lineman for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

What coach has made an impact on you and why?

Coach Easley, Varsity Track and Field Coach, has made the biggest impact on me because he always gives the best advice and team talks. Plus, he has pushed me to become a better athlete overall.

What superpower would you choose for yourself?

The ability to read minds.

I love banner painting. It is a fun way to bond with the cheer team because it is the first time we are really all together.

My birthday is on Christmas!

Are you related to anyone famous?

Helen Keller is my distant cousin on my mom’s side of the family.

What coach has made an impact on you and why?

Coach Tribble! I ran for him on the distance track team in the spring, and his training had a huge impact on my running.

I got so much faster, and I learned a lot from him. When we would stretch after practice, he would tell us little stories about runners around the world (like that one guy who ran in the bathtub while doing laundry) or tell us stories about life.

What impractical thing would you do first if you won the lottery?

Buy a ton of vinyls.

What is the best part of being on a team?

The best part of being on a team is definitely the camaraderie and traditions. I have gotten to become friends with so many people because of XC. I loved pasta dinners and sister group sleepovers last year!

What is a fun fact about you?

I have spent over 800 hours on zoom with my friends since the start of quarantine.

What is your favorite pre-game pump up song?

What advice would you give to someone younger than you?

Be curious. In two years, or five years, or ten years, you’ll look back and thank your younger self for joining that new club or trying out the new sport. The only way to grow is to keep pushing yourself outside of your comfort zone!

What is your favorite thing about Westminster?

Every single student has passions and interests in different topics, but we share the same eagerness to learn and to lead.

Why did you first choose your fall sport?

Coming to Westminster in 9th grade was extremely intimidating, but I very quickly fell in love with it. I chose cross country because my mom is a marathon runner, and I wanted to be able to train and run races with her. I also wanted to meet new people and make new friends!

What coach has made an impact on you?

Coach Eubanks has supported me unconditionally while I was going through some challenges at home, and I’ll never be able to thank her enough for her kindness and understanding.

I was always at cross country and track meets anyway, so I figured I might as well run.

Being from a family of runners is fun and my sister will go on weekend runs with me to make them more bearable. Being from a family of runners is funny when my dad gets everyone matching running shoes for Christmas!

What is the best part of being on a team?

You gain a network of people who you can lean on and cheer for!

Coach Tribble’s leadership has done more for me than I can describe. He cares deeply for each and every runner on his team, from the fastest to the slowest. He is truly a man with a kind heart and has had an incredible impact on Westminster and the Atlanta community.

Aydin Bandukwala Cross Country Class of 2021

Why did you choose to run Cross Country?

I ran cross country in middle school, and I originally wanted to do it just to stay in shape for lacrosse, but I ended up falling in love with the sport. Cross country makes me push myself and dig deeper than any other sport or activity I’ve ever participated in.

What is your favorite memory from Cross Country?

The overnight trip to the Wendy’s Invitational in North Carolina.

What is it like running alongside your brother?

It certainly motivates me to run faster and work harder to stay faster than him, but the friendly competition is great.

What are some endearing similarities and differences between Columbia, Singapore, and the U.S.?

They’re all extremely different, but in all three the people loved their native country with a passion, which I love to see.

I’ve always wanted to go to el Clasico, the legendary futbol derby between Barcelona and Real Madrid.

I enjoy how close the sport makes you to your teammates.

All of us are so closely knit, and I think it will remain that way for the rest of our lives.

What’s the most daring thing you’ve ever done?

Ran down a mountain in Ecuador.

What superpower would you choose for yourself?

The teachers are very invested in our future, and in my experience, they will sacrifice every minute of free time if students need help.

What is your favorite memory from Cross Country?

When we won state by 2 points against Pace in 2019.

The ability to fly.

Learning how to lose.

Do you have any superstitions surrounding competition or your sport?

Yes, almost every runner that I can think of at Westminster has something that they do before a race. For example, I have to watch a running movie the night before every morning race.

What is a fun fact about you?

I can name every country in the world from memory.

Why did you first choose Cross Country?

In the fall of sixth grade, my mom presented me with an ultimatum: either join cross country or do the fall play. I chose cross country because I get very anxious when performing in front of people, and I fell in love with the sport.

Who is your sports hero?

Although most of you won’t know who he is, Eliud Kipchoge. He broke the 2-hour barrier for the marathon in 2019, but he didn’t bathe in its glory. He lives as a farmer in Kenya when he isn’t running, and is really down to earth. He believes “No human is limited.”

Coach Morse – He has stuck by me over the course of my time at Westminster and constantly been there to give me advice and help me grow as a person and athlete.

What advice would you give to someone younger than you?

Hard work can take you anywhere you want to go.

What is a fun fact about you?

I ate pizza for every meal for 4 straight days.

Do you have any superstitions surrounding competition or your sport?

I touch the Believe sign above the locker room door every day when I enter and exit.

What is the best part of being on a team?

You feel like you always have an external group of siblings whom you can count on for a multitude of things.

What is your favorite sports quote? ”You miss 100% of the shots you never take”. – Wayne Gretzky.

What do you like about being an athlete?

The grind and routine.

What superpower would you choose for yourself?

Teleportation

What is the best part of being on a team?

The bond you create with your teammates.

Our football chant on the way into the stadium.

What is your favorite thing about Westminster?

Playing football for a great head coach.

If you could attend any sporting event, what would it be?

White Out game at Happy Valley.

What is your favorite sports quote?

“Hard work beats talent when talent fails to work hard.” – Kevin Durant

I would tell younger players to work hard and never give up. Go to every lift and every practice and give it 110 percent all the time. Every position is important and necessary to win.

What is your favorite memory from your sport?

I made my first varsity tackle as a sophomore at Redan.

We were up by several touch downs and we had shut them down so far. They had marched down the field and they were lined up to kick a field goal when I went in. As the play developed, it was a fake and they started running the ball.

I was in the right place at the right time and made the tackle that kept them from scoring and we kept our shut out. I can’t explain the feeling I had at that moment, but it’s a memory I will always have.

What do you like about being an athlete?

I like playing football for Westminster and representing my school. I remember telling my mom before 7th grade football how excited I was to play for the Wildcats. I think it is such a honor to represent our school on that field. Even now every time I run out on the field I feel an excitement for playing football for the Wildcats.

What coach has made an impact on you and why?

Hard question Of course Coach Romberg has made a huge impact on me. I remember things he tells us after practice about football and life. He always makes the offensive line feel important even though we are not usually in the spotlight. He and the whole coaching staff really

believe in all the players and are our biggest supporters. I certainly haven’t been the star athlete on the team but I have always felt needed and that I was important to the overall success of the team. I think that reflects back to the great coaches that we have. Coach Alexander, Coach Pelot, and Coach Harrison are the ones I have worked most closely with and they push me hard to be my very best.

What is your favorite memory from Football?

Beating Lovett last year!

The best part of being on the team is that we really are family.

I feel so close to all of these guys and I know they have my back just like I have theirs. It’s hard to describe the bond we have. I know I will remember these days forever and how important Westminster football has been to me.

CATBACKER SOFTBALL SPOTLIGHT What is the most exciting moment from your softball career?

Pitching a shutout against Lumpkin County junior year in the first round of the state playoffs or being named region offensive player of the year.

Who is the opponent you are most looking forward to facing?

I always look forward to the Lovett game. It’s an old rivalry, and I typically know a few players on the other team which makes it extra competitive. The feeling of beating them never gets old.

Do you have any advice for players younger than you?

Enjoy every moment you have as a Westminster softball player. Make sure you will leave the program knowing you have given it your all.

We lost the first game and then totally came back in the second game to win. Even though we lost the third game, I will never forget how proud I was of every single one of my teammates, on and off the field, for playing our absolute hearts out and cheering at the top of our lungs.

What is the best part of being part of Westminster Softball?

I love that we all play because we love the sport and love each other!

Thank you for supporting and pushing me every day. I’ll take the lessons that you taught me to college, and an extra thank you for letting me roam the outfield for the past four years!

What is the most exciting moment from your softball career?

Our playoff series against Lumpkin County in my junior year was my favorite softball memory because we came together as a team and played with so much spirit and heart.

It was one of more exciting games as well because the last game came down to the last out.

surrounding your sport?

I have to end batting practice with a good hit and I have to end pitching warmups on a strike. I also step on the foul line every time before a game- it’s my way of counteracting bad luck.

Do you play any other sports? How does this help with your softball game?

I also play lacrosse as a midfielder. Lacrosse emphasizes teamwork, which definitely helps with softball.

Lacrosse is a more physical, athletic game than softball, so I think it’s always helpful when I get to track down balls in the outfield or infield.

What is the most exciting moment from your softball career?

Winning against Lovett 9 to 7 at home my sophomore year.

What is your warm-up routine?

I usually eat packs of Motts gummies until my stomach hurts.

Do you have any superstitions surrounding your sport?

A superstition that our team has is that before the game starts no one can step on the white lines on the field.

Do you have any advice for someone younger than you?

Cherish the moments that you have with your teammates as much as you can because before you know it you’ll have to say goodbye. They will be your family for the rest of your softball career, and the memories that you’ll make with them will stick with you forever.

What is the best part of being part of Westminster Softball?

The family atmosphere and the pregame meals.

What athlete do you look up to and why?

I look up to Mookie Betts because he’s an amazing hitter and outfielder. He also plays for one of my favorite MLB teams, which is an added bonus.

Favorite dugout snack?

Bubble gum

Do you have any superstitions surrounding your sport?

I like to wear my lucky t-shirt (my track t-shirt from the state championships) to bed the night before a big game.

What do you like to do when not playing softball?

I like to read, play with my dogs, and binge Criminal Minds.

What is your favorite memory from Westminster Volleyball?

Beating Lovett in the state semifinal game my freshman year with the entire school in the stands cheering!

Tell me about your recovery from your ACL injury?

Building all of my strength back after surgery was one of the most difficult things I have ever done. Throughout the recovery process I was motivated by staying engaged with the team and with the sport even when I could not play. Watching my teammates play gave me something to work towards!

Who is your sports hero?

Victoria Garrick! She was USC’s starting libero who advocated for athletes’ mental health.

What gift have your received from Volleyball?

Friends. Volleyball has led me to some of the most incredible women that I know.

What song best describes you?

"Girl on Fire" by Alicia Keys.

What has your sport given you?

It makes me more aware of my surroundings, and allows me to think about my next move quicker.

What is your favorite memory from Volleyball?

At the beginning of the season I put a lot of pressure on myself to prove that I belonged on the team but all my upperclassmen teammates made me feel way more comfortable.

I learned that everyone makes mistakes and they are able to better themselves from it.
