A MESSAGE FROM LEADERSHIP
DEAR FRIENDS,Weld Legacy Foundation had an exciting year in 2023 supporting this community in many impactful ways! We awarded nearly $725,000 in grants plus over $80,000 in scholarships totaling more than $805,000 to benefit Weld County citizens.
As part of the organization’s 49-year history, Weld Legacy Foundation continues to aid many departments at Banner Health’s North Colorado Medical Center with the costs of medical equipment, continuing education as well as department costs. Additionally, grants were awarded directly to individuals and their families for assistance while they were receiving medical treatment. Finally, Weld Legacy awarded grants to support other medical programs in this community.
Weld Legacy has 14 scholarship funds to support students earning a degree or certification in the healthcare field or continuing education for healthcare professionals. In 2023, scholarships were awarded to 22 students and professionals totaling $83,103.
A vital component enabling our organization to support all these programs is our fundraising events. In 2023, we hosted three fundraising events with a golf tournament, black-tie gala and a 2K/5K run. Additionally, there were another four fundraising events of which Weld Legacy Foundation was a beneficiary.
Finally, Weld Legacy Foundation began working on building the capacity of other nonprofits in this community who offer programs in health or education. In 2023, we assessed the top needs of area nonprofits that Weld Legacy could assist to help them deepen their impact for the individuals they serve. Utilizing the information gathered in 2023, we plan to begin offering services in 2024 to help them multiply their impact.

MONFORT CHILDREN’S CLINIC
The Monfort Children’s Clinic operated by Sunrise Community Health is located at 100 N. 11th Avenue in Greeley. The 15,000 square foot facility is owned by Weld Legacy Foundation. Monfort Children’s Clinic provides affordable comprehensive physical and mental health services for children in this community. The estimated value of the in-kind rent is $148,500 annually.

Weld Legacy Foundation has many patient support funds to aid individuals and their families with costs incurred during treatment from a serious medical illness. In 2023, the Foundation distributed $189,750 directly to or for patient support. These awards support people with a wide variety of costs including:
Living expenses for patients undergoing treatment: $19,607
Travel costs to/from treatment and medical transports: $23,300
Mammograms and other testing/diagnostics: $30,376
Burn garments and clothing from the Hospitality Closet: $14,020
Cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation: $61,882
Pediatric costs for car seats, personal items and stays at the Hospitality House: $17,288
Medical costs for medical alert systems, scales and prescriptions: $23,277



CURTIS STRONG EYE CENTER FOR THE VISUALLY IMPAIRED $95,000

The Curtis Strong Eye Center is operated by Ensight Skills Center. They provide a full range of low vision services, assistive devices, support and education. Curtis Strong was a prominent businessman in Weld County who suffered macular degeneration, an affliction of the eyes, in the later years of his life. He gave a $2.3 million bequest to Weld Legacy Foundation to support others who are visually impaired. In 2023, $95,000 was distributed to Ensight Skills Center in Greeley to support their operations.
HEART SAFE CITY $41,991

The Heart Safe City initiative aims to educate citizens on identifying the signs of cardiac arrest, how to administer CPR and use an automated external defibrillator (AED). In 2023, Weld Legacy Foundation paid for three additional AEDs to be placed in public areas as well as operating costs for the program.
SCHOLARSHIPS
Weld Legacy Foundation has 14 established scholarship funds to support students and professionals in the medical community to earn degrees and certifications or continued education in the healthcare field. In 2023, the Foundation awarded 22 students and medical professionals with scholarships totaling $83,103.
WELD LEGACY FOUNDATION HAS AWARDED 345 SCHOLARSHIPS AND INVESTED OVER $1,832,145 IN STUDENTS AND PROFESSIONALS IN THE HEALTHCARE FIELD IN THIS COMMUNITY.
Mildred S. Hansen Nursing Program Scholarship - (two-year scholarship covers the cost of in-state tuition, fees, books and a living stipend). It is awarded to a student pursuing either a Bachelor of Science or Master of Science in Nursing, Nurse Practitioner, or other related advanced nursing degree at the University of Northern Colorado.

Nurse Education Tuition Assistance
Scholarship - ($1,500 per semester for up to five semesters). It is awarded to a student pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in Colorado.

Allied Health Professional and Emergency Medical Services Scholarship - ($1,000 per semester up to two semesters.) It is awarded to a student pursuing an Allied Health Professional or Emergency Medical Services degree or certificate through courses at Aims Community College.

Henneck Family Scholarship - (up to $900). It is awarded to Banner Health NCMC ancillary staff for continuing education within their professional field.

FUNDRAISING EVENTS AND BENEFICIARIES
34TH ANNUAL WELD LEGACY FOUNDATION GALA


The 34th Annual Weld Legacy Foundation Gala, Wicked Affair, presented by Chevron was held on October 28, 2023, benefiting Bright Futures. The event was sold out with over 400 guests in attendance. The recommended attire was black-tie Halloween which resulted in many entertaining and chilling costumes.

The evening’s festivities included a flash mob of zombies set to Michael Jackson’s Thriller, a fortune teller, just-for-fun gaming tables, and dancing to the Jerry Barnett Orchestra. There was even one lucky guest who won a Tahitian pearl necklace donated by Weiss Jewelers.
Each year the Weld Legacy Foundation honors an outstanding individual, organization, or family for distinguished service and leadership in healthcare or education in our community. The 2023 Legacy Award recipient was Scott Ehrlich for founding the College Promise program for Aims Community College students. The success of that program ultimately led to expanding college assistance across all of Weld County. The new program commenced in 2015 and was named Bright Futures.


The evening was emceed by Vic Lombardi, one of the country’s most-respected sports personalities. Fundraising activities included a paddle raise, which Pivot Energy initiated with a matching gift of $85,000. The Gala had over 100 sponsors ranging from $250 up to $30,000. THE NET PROCEEDS FROM THE GALA EXCEEDED $300,000 TO BENEFIT BRIGHT FUTURES.
Bright Futures is a Weld County workforce initiative designed to strengthen the vitality of the Weld County community. It offers awards to qualifying Weld County students who graduate from a Weld County high school, GED recipients and honorably discharged veterans to attend college, a trade school or career training. The award is up to $14,000 over eight semesters to attend school in Weld County or up to $8,000 over eight semesters to attend in Colorado outside Weld County or its seven surrounding states.

In 2023, Bright Futures supported more than 1,350 students with more than $2.4 million invested in Weld County’s future. Students may use the award for tuition and fees, books, transportation or a personal computer.
Donors to Bright Futures who are Weld County property owners are eligible to receive a credit up to 50% of their donation toward the Weld County portion of their property taxes.

41ST ANNUAL GOLF TOURNAMENT


Weld Legacy Foundation hosted its 41st Annual Golf Tournament in 2023 to benefit Heart Safe City. Although the event experienced its first-ever rain delay in the tournament’s 40-year history, moving it from June to August, there was a great turnout with 55 foursomes participating.
RAISED OVER $37,000 IN NET PROCEEDS FOR HEART SAFE CITY.

The tournament had 57 sponsors ranging from $1,000 - $3,250. There were also 25 other contributors to the event.
In addition to playing a round in a morning or afternoon flight, the golfers further supported the fundraiser by bidding on several silent auction items. The top bid was for a 3-night stay for two at the Omni LaCosta Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, California.

Prizes were also awarded for the Closest to the Pin as well as Longest Drive for men and women. There was a Chip for the Chair contest as well where one skilled golfer won a new desk chair.
The golf tournament raised over $37,000 in net proceeds to support Heart Safe City. Heart Safe City is a community-wide effort to educate citizens on the symptoms of cardiac arrest, how to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and use an automated external defibrillator (AED).
Weld Legacy Foundation has been part of the Heart Safe City initiative since its inception in 2012 and has supported this program with over $410,000 during its lifetime.
26TH ANNUAL TURKEY TROT
In 2023, Weld Legacy Foundation co-hosted the 26th Annual NCMC Turkey Trot to raise funds for supporting patients undergoing treatment in cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation. With over 2,700 runners and walkers, this is one of the largest Thanksgiving 2K/5K races in northern Colorado. The event raised over $43,500 in net proceeds.
Patients involved in cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation receive individualized exercise, diet and treatment plans to meet each person’s needs.
PATIENT SUPPORT FUNDRAISING
Four other fundraising events in 2023 benefited Patient Support Funds at Weld Legacy Foundation. We wish to extend our sincere thanks to these dedicated organizations who have made a real difference with their efforts.
Civitas Clay Shoot - This sporting clay shoot raised $51,000 to support the MD Anderson Cancer Center and CardioVascular Institute at North Colorado Medical Center. These funds aid patients with financial assistance during treatment.


Human Bean’s Coffee for a Cure - This collective giveback day during Breast Cancer Awareness month donates 100% of all sales from the day to support patients with mammograms, breast cancer education and patient support. In 2023, Human Bean donated $33,800 to Weld Legacy Foundation’s Breast Cancer Patient Support Fund.
Knights of Swallows 33rd Annual Golf Tournament - This event is hosted by a group of oil and gas professionals. They raised $31,500 to support burn-related care expenses for patients and their families.
Greeley Stampede Foundation and Ranack Cares Foundation, Tough Enough to Wear Pink Donation - This campaign raised $25,000 for the Weld Legacy Foundation Breast Cancer Patient Support Fund. These monies will be used to support individuals with costs associated with treatment.
CAPACITY BUILDING
Beginning in 2023, Weld Legacy Foundation began looking at how it could multiply the impact of the nonprofit community within health or education across Weld County with capacity building services.
Weld Legacy Foundation engaged in a comprehensive needs assessment in 2023 to determine the most urgent capacity building needs of the nonprofit community in Weld County.
The assessment included 158 surveys followed by 22 one-on-one interviews, and two focus groups with 35 participants to augment and complement the information received through the surveys. Weld Legacy Foundation then hosted a series of workshops focused on three major topic areas: (1) organizational capacity needs, (2) infrastructure and transportation and (3) skills development.

SERVICES
The nonprofit organizations qualifying for the capacity building services are referred by The Weld Trust, the supporting organization to the Weld Legacy Foundation. Based on identifying some of these top priorities, in 2024 Weld Legacy Foundation will work with several of these nonprofits in specific areas that could include:
• Grant writing and fundraising activities
• Potential shared services - WLF staff will determine the feasibility of creating a shared services delivery model to meet the needs of area nonprofits
• Connection events - to better connect with other nonprofits and funders serving Weld County
• Shared space - pursue a location where partners can provide services to their clients
