From The Editor…

You will have noticed a change in the way The Welcome Record looks with this issue with a re-design of our cover, back and centre pages. In the coming weeks, we will be revamping the interior pages of our community paper to reflect a more vibrant and current look and feel.

However, I would like to stress that the “soul” of The Welcome Record will not change but continues to focus on COMMUNITY – what we need to know, what we love to do and what we celebrate and remember. Just as we continue to refresh the design of the paper, we are also focused on a more “open door” editorial policy of celebrating and recording our varied Community activities, events and interests. Welcome is in our name and we always look forward to everyone in the Community contacting or sending us information so we can truly reflect our Community in our weekly coverage.

In order for us to do that week after week, we urgently need VOLUNTEERS.

We need volunteer reporters, proofreaders, photographers, production staff as well as help with distributing the paper throughout the town and into Maryborough.

Many hands make light work and right now, we do not have enough volunteers to “share the load”. After more than 40 years and completely run by volunteers, The Welcome Record is one of a few handful of surviving weekly community papers and we are at a critical crossroads in our survival as a Community paper.

If we are to continue – we need support not only to survive but thrive into the future. We urgently need our Community’s help and without it, the paper will fold. Please respond promptly to our advertisement on Page 8 calling for volunteers to guarantee our future.

Our fate is in our Community’s hands.

Letters and Notices

Dear Editor,

Hello to all Members, families, friends and supporters,

Thank you to the scores of people who came to the Tarnagulla District Golf Club last Saturday, 25th March and pitched in by adding finishing touches to make the Course look just beautiful. Dave Shay, Peter Ravenhall and Peter Van Der Valk had the Course already mown and had performed a lot of maintenance over the Summer months to have the Course looking a treat.

On Saturday, we topped up the sands (and yes, they're putting very true), cleared some scrub areas, trimmed branches and cleaned up debris around the Course.

Others weeded the Clubhouse garden, cleaned all the windows, sweptyou name it, it was done with a mix of elbow grease and very good humour. Harold Shipston had steam-cleaned the Clubhouse carpet over the Summer and it looks new again!

A warm “Thank you” to so many capable and good people who have done such a marvellous job.

Op Shop News

GOING, Going…..

The $5 a Bag Sale is going wonderfully well. Thank you to all our keen purchasers. Can you imagine the relief our volunteer workers feel, when yet another load of summer clothes, shoes and handbags “sail” out the door? Every bag means so many less items (you can stuff a very large number of items into our bags) which have to be taken off the racks, folded up, placed into large containers and packed into vehicles, to be sent to holding facilities larger than Dunolly Op Shop. Please come back again and relieve us of some more summer wearables.

DUNOLLY SENIOR CITIZEN’S CLUB

Indoor Bowls every Monday afternoon staring at 1 pm. Just $5 to join the Club and $2 each week to play.

THANK YOU

The Welcome Record would like to sincerely Thank the Dunolly Senior Citizen’s Club for their kind donation of $50. It is greatly appreciated.

Ride for Cancer, Adelaide to Melbourne 24th th

The brave and weary team from Ride for Cancer - Adelaide to Melbourne stopped in Dunolly on their last legs of their fundraising ride. Having raised almost $35,000 for three Cancer groups – Breast Cancer, Leukemia and the Cancer Council, the riders had just braved an eye-watering 160 km ride from Nhill to St. Arnaud before arriving in Dunolly. Happily, they were most impressed with the welcoming locals and the refreshments on offer. The group has an Instagram page “Ride for Cancer” which will still allow anyone to support their cause through donations. Well done lads!

As you walk into the Op Shop, you may think you have come into one of the very lovely art galleries that we have in Dunolly. You are still in the Op Shop because we have received generous donations of pictures, paintings, prints and frames. Some of the items are works of art in the true meaning of that statement.

Some of the photographs also fit into the fine art category, particularly a couple of lovely Central Australian scenes. Other pictures are what one might call ‘early attempts’ – that may be a kind way to describe them.

However, some of the frames in which these pictures are placed are very tasteful. This enables our Op Shop customers to place their own favourite pictures and photographs in remarkably good frames for the tiniest price. Do come along and search through our ever-growing supply of artwork, pictures and prints in frames.

Our community is being encouraged to get physically active while having some fun at the same time by taking part in Adventure Bingo – an initiative from Healthy Loddon Campaspe.

Adventure Bingo invites residents to get involved, either online or via hard copy, by walking one of six trails across the Loddon Campaspe region. Through the initiative, participants spot points of interest listed on a grid during their walk and once they’ve spotted three items in a vertical, horizontal or diagonal line, they’ve got Bingo.

Healthy Loddon Campaspe is also giving residents the chance to win one of 50 $20 sports store gift cards via a series of prize draws. Entries are open from now until Friday 5 May, with five weekly draws starting from Tuesday 11 April.

Healthy Loddon Campaspe Coordinator, Alicia O’Brien said, “The 2022 Australian Report Card on Physical Activity for Children and Young People indicated that whilst most children and young people in Australia have access to public open spaces such as parks and playgrounds, just one quarter are meeting the national physical activity guidelines for their age.

We hope that by encouraging people to participate in Adventure Bingo, it will provide a fun, free reason for children and families to be more physically active.”

“It also provides residents and visitors alike with a free, self-guided opportunity to explore walks in our region at any time that suits them,” Ms. O’Brien said.

family that encourages everyone to be physically active by exploring walks across our region while having some fun at the same time. With school holidays almost here – I encourage local residents to get involved and have some fun.”

The Welcome Record Wednesday 29th March - Page 7
Other Adventure Bingo walks are located in Gunbower, Bendigo, Boort, Romsey and Maldon.

To ensure the safety of the community, and to enable further investigation to be carried out, a section of the grandstand has been closed off from community use. We’ll keep the community updated as soon as we know more.

convenience.

Heather greeted and invited us the previous office for the station, now set up as a museum with many photos, plans and historical items. Well versed in the history of the station, she gave a very interesting historical account with many personal stories and thanked Jenny Scott for her contribution of photos. As Whispering Weeders, the spotlight of our visit was the spectacular garden. Just to name a few of the plants grown – Kalamata olives; flowering caper bushes; Italian lavender; citrus trees; a large mulberry tree; and a two hundred rose bush hedge for the public carpark. Heather also described how the capers are seeded and harvested; how the huge amount of horse manure helps make the garden thrive and gave tips on how to cut lavender correctly.

The caper farm part of their business has been sold to a local couple Narie and Mark (Wot’s Your Caper) and is still thriving. Heather and Robert are putting their considerable skills towards creating a culinary line using capers from their own patch. We lucky ladies were given a taste of small savoury biscuits with capers and one with cheese and capers. These would be suitable for a cheese platter or for the tapenade made by Robert and Heather from olives and capers. After the walk around the garden, we went back to the station where Heather served tea and coffee, plus the savoury biscuits.

An enjoyable and educational morning was spent, and we headed back to Dunolly due to the wet weather, except for Natalie who went on to the caper farm where she had a tour of their Wot’s Ya Caper yard and workshop commenting that “It is an amazing place.”

Anyone can join the Whispering Weeders Garden Group, on the last Monday of the month. Our next visit is to The Great Stupa at Myers Flat on April 24th Marilyn Goldie

THE LIZARD LODGER

Early in Summer, I discovered I had a beautiful Blue Tongue Lizard in my garden. Whenever I attempted to clear the grass, weeds or leaves there it was, most annoyed that I was removing the hiding places. After the downfalls of rain, what I call umbrella grass sprung up all over and near a drain. So I left the grass when mowing, creating a showy, shady spot. I was completely oblivious that the ‘Lodger’ had taken up Summer residence there. A lovely hidey hole in the drain, sunshine to bask in and a shady patio area. The weed had done it’s season and was looking scraggy so I chopped it off close to the roots, only to find a very cross blue tongue wondering where its beautiful shelter had gone!

I was horrified so I hurriedly gathered some droopy pots plants to recreate its habitat. To make amends I put the ‘Lodger’ on the feeding rounds along with the chickens and birds with offerings of lettuce, fruit and bread.

These secretly disappeared each morning and after the necessary energy gathering sun-baking was done. The lizard became accustomed to me and allowed me to study the interesting changes that occurred as it warmed up - the duller grey shades developed into a lemon colour on its neck, belly and sides.

It was fun having a wild creature take up residence, enjoying the ‘Air B&B’ that I had created.

As the season passed I thought I saw another lizard in quiet spots, under the tomato plants.

It wasn’t as confident as it’s friend but I wondered if they were a pair making the best of a safe haven.

Baking with Bella

These chocolate chip cookies are crispy on the outside, chewy on the inside, buttery and perfectly sweet.

They are easy to make and don't require chilling! I make mine gluten free so I can eat them, but normal flour would work fine

Ingredients

½ cup salted butter

½ cup white sugar

½ cup light brown sugar

1 tsp pure vanilla extract

1 large egg

1 ½ cups gluten-free all-purpose flour

½ tsp baking soda

¼ tsp baking powder

½ tsp fine sea salt

1 cup chocolate chips

Instructions:

1. Preheat oven to 190 degrees Celsius. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper, set aside.

2. In a small bowl, combine gluten-free flour, baking soda, baking powder and sea salt. Set aside

3. In the bowl of a standing mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, cream together butter and sugars until light and fluffy.

4. Add egg and vanilla and beat until combined.

5. Add dry ingredient mixture and beat until the dough is uniform throughout

6. Add chocolate chips and stir until evenly distributed.

7. Use a small cookie scoop to measure out 1 ½ TBS portions of dough, then roll into balls and place on prepared baking sheets at least 2” apart (I usually put 8 or 9 cookies on each baking sheet).

8. Bake in preheated oven for 9-10 minutes, or until cookies are barely set.

9. Cool on baking sheet for 5-10 minutes before transferring to a wire cooling rack to cool completely.

Central Goldfields Residents and Ratepayers Assoc. Inc.

CORRECTION The error was ours.

Last week we stated that our next Ratepayers meeting was to be at “Dunolly on 4th April 2023 at 7pm at St John’s Church Hall, entry off Barkly St Dunolly.”

That is incorrect, and our next meeting will be held at Gordon Gardens (Bowls Club side shelter) on 4th April at 6 pm. Please bring a chair and a coat just in case it gets cold.

Last weekend's Dunolly Country Market again was very well-attended and was so pleased to see a lot of support. Well done to all concerned.

Since the Coffee with our Mayor event we have not noticed any improvement with the planning concerns and there is also a concern with the Council and State grants distribution across the Shire.

We would suggest you contact your Ward Councillor and seek advice on both of these matters.

Our Councillors were elected to advocate for us. Flynn Ward has one of the more involved councillors. For those in other shires, please reach out to your elected councillor and we would recommend it all be in writing.

The outcome regarding the Council charging interest on overdue rates and charges ended up with CGR&RAI contacting one of our councillors and receiving this reply: “State government say whether

(sic) we can or not (and set the maximum rate) but I believe the choice is Council's. If a ratepayer is overdue but engages with Council on a payment plan, interest would most likely be waived.”

We would recommend anyone questioning anything regarding this situation not to ring Council, but to please put it in writing and obtain a “Read Receipt” when sending emails or mail it by registered mail. Unfortunately, the situation is now that we have to have our backs covered. Keeping copies of every communication with councillors and council is very important.

It is very disturbing when our council and councillors are screaming “Please contact us“ that a simple question about council charging interest has gone through three council officials, and taken over three weeks.

Council is probably hoping this will go away. Please contact the Shire with any questions, but make sure you have copies.

Stay safe and look after each other.

PLEASE NOTE:

The next Ratepayers meeting will be held on the 4th April at 6 pm at Gordon Gardens (Bowls Club side shelter).

Tarnagulla District Golf Club Greenskeepers’ Games Report

In the afternoon, we played the 7 hole Greenskeepers' Games. Some of the holes were changed to create a different layout and it was a lot of fun and enjoyed by all.

In the Clubhouse, we all clapped Betty Higgs (a youthful 95 years) who played very well, typically hitting balls down the middle of the fairways, for her continued support of the Club, her enthusiasm and her golfing abilities.

We also had a lot of talking, laughter and clapping in the Clubhouse and our Winners were:

Women's Winner: MEREDITH HARWOOD

Men's Winner: SHAUN MAVER

Nearest the Pin: GARRY HARWOOD

Our next event is the Easter Saturday "EASTER CUP" event on Saturday 8th April 2023.

The Event is a 9 hole Three Ball Ambrose and you can bring your own team of three or we can place you with other players to make up a team of three.

The Three Ball Ambrose is such a forgiving game of golf as you chose your next shot from the ball with the best position from the balls the three of you have played. We have so much fun as the Ambrose makes us all feel like Champion golfers.

The event is FREE to all Members ( Gold Membership - can vote at AGM - $80; Non-Voting &/or Social Membership - $50; Junior Membership - under 16 years - Free) or $15 for non-members. (Members can play all year round without paying any green Fees. Non-Members pay $5 per day Green Fees in the Honesty Box.)

The EASTER CUP will be a wonderful day and we are all looking forward to it.

You can Register at LRAAD@MAIL.COM or on 0481 008 006 or in person on the day.

Bealiba Bowls

There were a few bowlers missing this week but the seven remaining had a fun night.

One team of four playing one team of three. Lots of laughter, kitty clinging to the edge of the mat & bowlers hoping their bowl would get close enough without being the one to tip kitty over.

The team of Lyle Streeter, Shirley Coburn & Heather Cooper and the team of Tiger Coburn, Gary McClelland, Chris Evans & Malcolm Campbell ended up with a win, a draw & a loss each.

Very even bowling across the evening. We wish our injured bowlers & those on the sick list, a very speedy recovery.

Happy bowling

Chris Evans
