From the Editor...

2023 will go down in the history of The Welcome Record as even ul, to say the least.

From re-designing, re-posi oning and increasing the online readership of our Paper to almost closing and then, winning the CNAV Best Newspaper Award – this has been an important defining year for The Welcome Record.

The rejuvena on began with a visual and editorial iden ty which now sets us apart namely, that The Welcome Record clearly stands for COMMUNITY. For the first me, in a long me – the focus is firmly back into and about our Community – what we need to know, understand, celebra ng our wins and providing kind support for our loss.

Our Community now SEE themselves in our “Book” and we are again a true Community Paper.

This year, we have defined the Voice of TWR as encouraging, construc ve, fun, informa ve, inclusive, a li le cheeky now and then but ul mately designed to be posi ve, kind, upli ing and a NECESSARY enjoyable read.

It is this special mix of form, structure and heart that defines TWR today which won us that highly coveted Award.

TWR reflects the voices of our Community and during this upcoming Holiday Season as many are struggling or need support – being posi ve, upli ing and kind are necessary values and ac ons that should define our community. TOGETHER, we are always Stronger, Kinder - BETTER. On a personal note, I would like to sincerely Thank our Adver sers – we know you have many op ons to promote your business and are grateful for you are choosing to ‘keep it local’ as without your support, we would not exist.

To all our community volunteers, contributors, cheerleaders, supporter , readers – without you all, again, we would not exist.

The high bar has been set but we can, like always surprise, delight and ul mately confound everyone on what we as a Community, as reflected in The Welcome Record, are capable of achieving with a lot of heart and soul for our community.

UPDATE ...Opticomm Fibre to the Premises

A

(FTTP) network Dunolly rollout

s previously reported in The Welcome Record in June, Dunolly residents (the only eligible town in our Shire) will have access to more reliable, high speed internet via a Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) network as part of the Vic Government’s Connec ng Victoria program.

This significant, next genera on, digital infrastructure rollout for Dunolly is being provided by Op comm, with over 15 years experience as a na onal provider of fibre networks across Australia bringing this exci ng connec vity to over 600 eligible residents in Dunolly.

At last report, it was an cipated that a le er would be sent to all residents providing informa on on the rollout and required ac on for this ‘funded’ technology connec on to be available at their eligible address. As most residents are aware, despite the no ceable cabling/wiring work on Broadway recently, no le er was sent which means no one was mistakenly le off the list or had missed the opportunity.

This mely update is to inform residents on what they can expect and what to do next.

Recently, one of Op comm’s contractors working on the network build had entered into administra on.

Op comm has mi ga on plans in place for such events; however, this will require a pause in construc on whilst the administra on process is worked through, and replacement teams are mobilised.

WHAT CAN WE DO NOW?

Op comm is priori sing resuming work and expects star ng work in the area soon. If your address is eligible for a funded* connec on due to the Vic Government, the most important thing to do is to register your address with Op comm.

Note that registra on does not oblige you to ac vate and pay for any internet services, it just means that Op comm can contact you in order to physically connect your residence to the network.

hould residents wish to connect a er works are complete in their area, they will NOT be eligible for a funded connec on and will incur charges for the installa on and connec on*.

It is vital to register your details, so Op comm can update you when work resumes and it is me to take ac on.

If you want to check whether your address is eligible for a funded connec on, you can use Op comm’s online address checker tool, simply enter your address at op comm.com.au/check. You can then con nue to register at this point.

If your address is eligible, you will receive a message no fying you accordingly. However, if the address is not eligible you will receive an “Address not found” message and means that you will not be able to access this technology.

Importantly, Connec ng Victoria and Op comm remain commi ed to the delivery of the FTTP network, so every eligible resident can enjoy superfast fibre broadband.

Glorious Christmas Windows

Dear Editor, The Christmas windows at Sovereigns on Broadway are just glorious. All that red and white is worth a short wander along Broadway to look at. During the Holiday season, the museum opening hours remain the same 10 am to 3 pm Wednesdays and Fridays and Sundays 1 pm to 4pm.

A shortage of volunteers may mean some of these days will not be open. In addi on, the Museum will not be open on Total Fire Ban days.

Martha Hayle MP recently visited Dunolly Primary School for the Dunolly Primary School’s awards assembly where she presented her new annual Award for Courage to student Toma Peters who received a $50 IGA gi voucher and a framed cer ficate. Toma has shown incredible courage in his me at Dunolly to not only embrace every educa onal opportunity, but to thrive in the wider school community to become an outstanding role model for all around him. Toma shows courage to stand up for what is right every day and a very worthy recipient of this award. Well done.

SOLAR PANELS FULLY INSTALLED AND CREATING POWER! I’m really thrilled to report that our solar panels are now fully installed, fully paid for, and are happily making power as we speak! I’m amazed at how efficiently Mel and Glen from Enviroshop Newstead installed them- it took less than a full business day for the panels to be installed, powered up, and making power.

I would like to thank the following organisa ons for their contribu on to our project through grant monies: Community Bank Maldon and District, Central Victorian Greenhouse Alliance, and Central Goldfields Shire Council. My special thanks go to our sub-commi ee of hard-working volunteers, who helped me over the course of many mee ngs over many months: convenor Tony Macer (who also helped with grant wri ng- thanks so much, Tony!), Rachel Buckley, Colleen Stra ord, Cr Liesbeth Long, Lisa Mahon and Faye Arnold. It really reduced the burden of effort from my shoulders to receive such assistance, so my hearty thanks team.

Introducing our new ‘A er Hours’ Pantry on the verandah! To protect food from the weather, we have re-purposed this old Kelvinator by ge ng Andrew Sco to secure it safely to the concrete les, and the fabulous artbrain of Lynda Vater to paint it! I’m thrilled, as it will be a safer way to store pantry items for people to access a er-hours. Holes have been drilled on the side to prevent mould from growing, and the sturdy construc on will mean we can place long-life milk inside for residents who may need a li le extra.

CHRISTMAS BREAK HOURS AT THE CENTRE: The Centre will close for two weeks over the Christmas period from 3pm Thursday the 21st of December, but the Dunolly Neighbourhood Pantry will be OPEN on the following days: Thursday the 28th of December from 1.30 to 3pm.

Thursday the 4th of January from 1.30 to 3pm.

The Centre will be back up-and-running on January the 8th at 9.30 am. We would like to wish our community of Dunolly and District a happy, safe and prosperous Christmas and New Year period, and we look forward to coming back bigger and be er next year!

Staying Calm for CHRISTMAS Demen a is not forge ng things. It is an altered mind state.

Demen a is an exhaus ng trial for one’s self confidence. We ask friends and family to support us when our self-worth is ‘under fire’.

O

ur Australian Christmas is different.

The main reason for that difference is our place in the Southern hemisphere.

European Christmas is a couple of days off work or schooling.

They share a gi for that special person and a social celebra on or family meal.

For Aussies it is culmina on of a year’s ac vi es, a comple on, a me to measure the achievement from the past eleven months.

Families also throw holiday plans into the fray.

How can you support folk living with demen a in the overwhelming abundance of Christmas?

Here are some ps...

Shopping: The regular supermarket can be quite overwhelming.

Red coloured decora ons, piped music of familiar songs, lights, gli er and nsel may make the supermarket a ‘no-go’ area if you have demen a.

Shop at a quiet me, the very first thing in the morning.

Shop in short bursts with a quiet sandwich in the park, between shops.

Support someone to shop online, because there can be so much on the screen that the effect is s ll overwhelming.

Social events: Make sure that all par cipants are aware of how demen a can affect a person’s wellbeing.

Small children can be enlightened, without overwhelming them with informa on. Suggest to the child, to say “Hi” and their name to all because they have grown so much, they are now uniden fiable. Remind children of the powerful influence of good manners.

In Conversa on: Lead the conversa on with statements that can be answered with a nod of affirma on. No ques ons please!

Not even “Ow y’go-en?” Try not to say how you forget things.

Demen a is not forge ng things.

o illustrate this, I shall give you a recent mental outlook from my experience from a couple of days ago.

A er a pleasant walk, I took off my beloved Akubra and placed it on the kitchen table.

A few minutes later, I put my hand to my head only to find my hat was not there.

Looking at the table, I saw that I had taken my hat off.

Would you believe, a couple of minutes later I a empted to take my hat off again.

Those Alzheimer’s brain blockages were holding the feeling of my

ha ed head.

Instances like this happen throughout my day. Black plas c bags are mistaken for our dog, A gas jet is burning but the cooking pot is on the jet that is not.

Let all of us have a cheerful, confident Christmas.

SUMMER STORIES ‘The BIG Summer Read’ is a library program to keep our young people engaged with the wri en word over the holiday season, especially once school ends.

MDHS SMALL THEATRE TEAMS DELIVERS BIG IMPACT

A

small theatre team at Maryborough District Health Service (MDHS) is making a big impact for people living in Central Victoria and beyond.

In the last year MDHS has helped an addi onal 270 regional Victorians on the planned surgery wait lists have their surgery sooner and in many cases, closer to home.

According to Robyn Wilson, MDHS Execu ve Director of Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health, these surgeries were performed as part of MDHS’s involvement in the Planned Surgery and Reform Project and the Grampians Region Health Service Partnership.

“While the Victorian elec ve surgery blitz began around 18 months ago, our commitment to tackling waitlists dates back to 2017, when we first added a sixth day of surgery, known as our Super Saturdays,” The Super Saturdays surgical list has helped 1,200 people get off the waitlist in Ballarat and into the MDHS theatre to receive the surgery they need – in addi on to their regular surgical list. An impressive result for a small regional theatre with a posi ve flow on effect that ripples through the region.

Ms Wilson added, “Redirec ng pa ents on a planned surgery waitlist to MDHS is obviously a great result for that individual. It also frees up the team in Ballarat to perform other surgeries, improving outcomes for people across the region.

“We couldn’t have achieved this result without the dedica on and commitment of our team, our surgeons and GP anaesthe sts and the support of the surgical liaison team at Grampians Health Ballarat.”

The Maryborough Hospital Redevelopment, due for comple on in 2025, will deliver an addi onal theatre with the latest technology to further enable MDHS to boost their capacity.

Free Wildlife Kits for Maldon & Dunolly

I

t’s that me of year when the days are ge ng warmer, and our wildlife is moving around during the cooler dusk and dawn hours.

It’s part of rural life, and we can drive according to the condi ons, but wildlife can be unpredictable and become vic m to life-threatening injuries from road traffic.

Community Bank Maldon & District have FREE wildlife kits, kindly put together by the volunteers at Red Box Wildlife Shelter.

These kits are a terrific addi on to your car ( just pop one under your seat) so you have all the informa on you might need in an “injured wildlife emergency”.

The kit includes a laminated card full of prac cal and helpful informa on as well as contact details for experts to provide guidance and support when needed.

WHAT’S HAPPENING TO DUNOLLY’S CATS? In the past 6 months, an unusually large amount of cats in Dunolly have gone missing.

An unverified source stated that the number was close to 40 cats! Many theories have been mooted snakes or a reprehensible cat-napper and the police have been informed.

Many owners are devastated at their loss and warn all fellow cat-lovers to be EXTRA VIGILANT, keep your cat safe and close-to-home.

his is the last report from the Dunolly Community Garden un l The Welcome Record is back from their much deserved Christmas break.

We had our Christmas Party on the 25th of November at the Mica Grange Gardens which is located on the foothills of Mt. Alexander and has stunning views across the Su on Grange valley.

We perused the lovely gardens, admired the artworks on display, had wonderful conversa ons and enjoyed some delicious treats that were on offer.

This week at the Community Garden, Michael and I got to harvest some cherries! So nice to finally have something ripening in the garden. We all enjoyed a li le feast of cherries and had enough to take some home.

Ric and Veronica took care of the lawns, with the recent warm weather, rain and then sunshine, they were ge ng out of control!

Anna did the tedious job of staking and tying up tomato bushes. The bushes are all coming along so nicely!

With any luck we will have a bumper crop this season.

t's been a busy year at the community garden, we've had workshops ranging from Gra ing to Making Sauerkraut to basic gardening skills.

We have teamed up with the Neighbourhood Centre to bring cooking classes on a budget.

A special thanks goes to Lisa Mahon for these classes.

She has been the driving force behind ge ng the funding and

organising everyone to help, teach etc.

Thank you to the new members who have popped in to help out and to all the community members that have joined us at the workshops!

ad another visit from the large lizard. Yes, I le the door open. He was snacking on the cat's dry food, so I picked him up and removed him. They cannot bite or escape if you hold them firmly just behind the front legs.

I see that perfect fruit is in the news again for Christmas. I can see why good-looking fruit looks great on cheese boards and the like. Is it really necessary for the fruit for fruit salad and pavs and the like to be perfect? A er all, it is chopped up into small pieces.

I have been no cing a very nice perfume in the kitchen that I could not place. I finally realised what the aroma was - it came from the ripening nectarines.

I was coming out of the Post Office one day last week when I heard a racket in the street and an adult and a couple of kids on scooters went past. I thought that they could not be making all that noise.

Then a stream of smallish children on scooters zoomed past, all wearing bright yellow

jackets, so they were very visible. As I remarked to the adult bringing up the rear on his scooter, it reminded me of the ‘Flight of the Bumblebees’’.

I am surprised when people say their cat is the boss of the house. A er all, mine is not like that. She is just clever - she has worked out if she scratches at the bo om of the screen door, I’ll come and let her out.

If she sits outside pa ently, she knows I will open the door to let her in. If she curls up on my bed (not allowed) and looks comfortable and cute, she knows I won't put her off. She is NOT the boss of the house.

he United Na ons designated World Toilet Day was held on 19th November, raising awareness about the need for all human beings to have access to sanita on.

And No – This is not a joke.

Our Victoria Police in a FaceBook Post used the occasion to remind road users that pit stops aren’t just for comfort, they provide an opportunity to get a much-needed break when you’re on a long journey.

Research has shown that driver fatigue is a contributing factor in up to one third of serious crashes, and you don’t need to fall asleep at the wheel to be involved in a crash.

Avoid driver fatigue, especially on long journeys, by taking the following steps: · Get plenty of sleep before leaving · Plan your route before you go and map out where you’ll take a break · Take regular rest stops and when on a break, take a short walk or stop for refreshments · Share the driving with a travelling companion · Take extra care or avoid driving between midnight and 6am as during these hours your body is most at risk from fatigue.

SENIORS Unfortunately the last two weekend’s matches have been washed out.

No balls were bowled against Beaufort on Saturday 2nd December. On Saturday all efforts were made to bring the pitch up to playable standard a er rain had managed to seep through the tarps.

Our bowlers started well with Zac Graham striking first, bowling out Cou s for a duck. Nalder was next to fall at the end of the second over bowled by Sam Bartle . Graham was quick to reply, also bowling out Harris in the 3rd over.

Bartle struck again in the 6th with Adam caught out. Joe Lovel came into a ack and also took out Mackay. Rosier snagged Cooper Mark who has been showing some promise for Carisbrook.

Graham chimed in for his 3rd wicket in Cullinan but the skies opened up and rain halted play a er 26 overs with Carisbrook 7/59. It wasn’t to resume.

JUNIORS

We made the trek back to Carisbrook on what was a scorcher. Requiring 97 for a win, the team would need to bat well together to get close.

The Crumpton boys opened with a rush pu ng on 56 runs from the opening 5 overs. This carried on with Dean and Gracie adding 40 runs in 4 overs giving us the win within 10 overs.

Top scorers for the day were Ned Crumpton (35), Dean Liddicoat (24), Billy Crumpton (17) and Grace Freemantle (8).

Another standout moment was Jordan Mitchell in his first year hi ng his first 4 well done.

Ba ng across the team is greatly improving and the kids are all having fun whilst doing it.

Bealiba Bowls Another season has drawn to a close and we had a great night with a beau ful dinner at the hall shared by bowlers & partners.

In the overall season’s points, the winner was Malcolm Campbell with 64 1/2 points, second was Lyle Streeter on 55 1/2 points and third was Shirley Coburn on 54 points.

This season’s winner of the ‘Sam Whitehead Memorial Trophy’ was Shirley Coburn who pipped Malcolm Campbell in the last round to win by three votes.

President Tiger Coburn proudly presented the trophy to wife Shirley.

We will now enjoy the break and then look forward to resuming in February 2024.
