Get Growing With Dunolly Community Garden

Our dedicated volunteers from the Dunolly Community Garden needs a ‘Helping Hand’ to continue producing and offering FREE Produce to everyone. The Share Table introduced three years ago in the front of the Garden, located next to the Dunolly Kindergarten in Maude Street, has provided fresh fruit and vegetables from our hard -working volunteers or community donations FOR FREE to everyone in the community.

If you have ever collected lemons, herbs, fruit, seeds, tomato plants from the Share Table, NOW is your chance to “give back” by helping as volunteers, as they need more helping hands to continue.

Get Growing….

Cont’d from Page 1

Established in 2010 the Community Garden was a result of a $20K Grant from Victorian Government program for regional communities to “eat healthy”.

After initial community consultation, the project was led by current Secretary, Lisa Mahon and supported by the Dunolly Kindergarten who provided the space. The project took a few months to complete and a core group of eight pioneers launched the project.

12 years later, the Garden continues to thrive, producing seasonal fruit and vegetables but with dwindling volunteers.

“We are far from being gardening experts but we all have different knowledge and skills, for example Mick and Liz are great at pruning and Veronica is our seed expert. We are always learning from each other in a very informal, relaxed, atmosphere - But WE REALLY NEED MORE PEOPLE.

Many hands make light work so if you can spare a couple of hours each week, fortnight or even monthly – there is no fixed commitment and they would be most grateful to share the load.

The group currently meets each Thursday at 3.30 pm but may look at alternative days and times to suit new volunteers. There are also plans to run workshops, working bees, information sessions on all things gardening, later this year. Join them now and help our Community Garden continue to grow.

Expand Your Impact is a FREE online initiative that challenges you to think a little differently and grow your success, in any area of life.

Delivered by Make a Change in collaboration with six regional partners – including Central Goldfields Shire Council - this program is for anyone who wants to do more, learn more, connect better, or generally be more effective.

Participation is FREE and open to everyone to participate. The first series was held in late 2022 with the second series to be held every Tuesday from 6 to 7.30pm, for six weeks, from Tuesday 21 February to Tuesday 28 March, 2023. You can also choose to attend single sessions.

The first series held in late 2022 was a great success. Michelle Baker, Maryborough Mill House Coordinator, participated and found the program of

Avoid Fossicking Penalty

With tens of thousands of Victorians authorised to search for gold on public land, authorities are reminding recreational prospectors to do the right thing, keep safe and safeguard the environment.

There are almost 73,000 active miner’s rights in Victoria and the rush to get involved shows no sign of abating with more than 8,000 purchased during 2021. While they’re out prospecting for gold, Earth Resources Regulation Inspectors and Conservation

Regulator Authorised Officers are checking that fossickers are licenced, panning in permitted areas and meeting their responsibilities to reduce any impact on the environment. Due to recent heavy rain and flooding, some areas across the state remain closed or inaccessible, so prospectors should plan ahead.

great benefit: “Expand YOUR Impact was instrumental in assisting me to identify a project I wanted to focus on - in my case this was a local community project I was already working on - others in the group focused on personal projects and some on work projects.

“Week by week the Expand YOUR Impact sessions built on the previous week’s sessions clarifying and assisting participants to better articulate and deepen their focus with their own project for improved outcomes.

Karen Corr from Make a Change said, “People participate for many reasons including reassessing what’s most important, developing new methods for success, connecting better with community, adapting to change, and developing effective new strategies.”

Central Goldfields Shire Mayor Cr Grace La Vella said, ”The program is a great invitation to take some time out for yourself, learn, reflect, build skills, make projects happen and connect with like-minded people in the community.”

forests and in designated areas of some national, state, historic and heritage parks.

Prospectors must also follow all other public land rules while out fossicking, including driving only on tracks or roads open to the public, taking all rubbish home, and immediately restoring the area to how it was found by backfilling any holes and replacing leaf litter.

The use of mechanical equipment or explosives is not permitted, vegetation and Aboriginal objects must not be removed or damaged.

In Victoria, hobby gold

hunters must possess a miner's right, which allows them to keep any gold they find.

Anyone caught panning or fossicking without a miner’s right permit can face penalties up to $36,984 under the Mineral Resources (Sustainable Development) Act 1990. A miner’s right can be purchased for $26 from Services Victoria.

Letters and Notices

Dear Editor

The Gold and Grain Café in Dunolly would like to let the community know that on Saturday the 25th of February we will be closing. The business and property will remain on the market and we hope an exciting new owner, ready to continue to grow and prosper here in Dunolly, will not be too far away.

It has been a pleasure to build our business over the past four years. Though we’ve been through a lot of ups and downs the support of our community and surrounds has helped us grow and prosper into a place that is much loved by many.

Linda and Georgine would like to thank our fantastic staff: Ange, Lily, Georgie, Alison and Charlotte. What fantastic people we have had the fortune to work with! So, cheers everybody! We will miss you and we hope you’ll miss us too.

MARKET UPDATE

The Dunolly Country Market is looking really good for it’s launch on Sunday, February 26 with 22 registered stalls, so far.

Market Manager Lynda Vater said, “We have a great mix of Fresh Produce, Art and Craft, Brica-Brac, Plants – it’s an exciting varied mix of stalls.”

She hopes to also have a minibike/car swap in the Renee Fox Gardens (to be confirmed).

The Market looks to stretch all along Broadway’s Shopping Precinct from the Town Hall to the Pharmacy on both sides of the street. It’s not too late to book a stall, call Lynda Vater on 0418 875 453 or Lynda.vater@gmail.com

I am camped on the back verandah, out of the sun, with coffee and biscuits. Great life. Was it my imagination or have there been more cicadas than usual this year, filling the air with their chirruping. There must have been a gazillion of them around this year judging by the calls and length of time they have been out. Cicadas always remind me of the end of year exams. We used to go to the town hall in Sale - it could accommodate Leaving and Matric (years 11 and 12) students from several schools. As we walked there and back and during the exams in November the air would be full of their songs There have been a lot more butterflies about too the white varieties and the brightercoloured ones as well. We were in the Western District a couple of weeks ago and the air was full of them. I wonder if the extra wet weather caused mass hatchings. The tree loppers from Powercor were here early this morning. When I got the notice about lopping my trees, I was fascinated to know which ones would go, as all the tall trees are well away from power lines. With big trucks parked each side of my wheelie bin (they could have put it back inside the gate), they surveyed the trees and decided the tops should go from a wattle and a melaleuca. These are fairly small trees and I reckon they would take another ten years to be a danger to the power lines.

Just for fun

Two young blokes were discussing how hard it is to find the right girl to marry. "Yeah, it's not easy," says one. "Every girl I bring home to meet my parents, Mum doesn't like." "That's easy fixed, all you have to do is bring home a girl that is just like your Mum." "I've already tried that," says his mate, "and that's the one the old man didn't like."

Dunolly Community Garden News

We had a couple of lovely visitors from The Welcome Record this week at the Dunolly Community Garden.

Katie, the photographer spent some time taking photos of us and some of our tasty produce! Photos that you will be sure to see in future issues.

Thursday was quite a hot day. Everything was in dire need of a good drink, our lettuce seedlings that were looking spectacular last week were very limp and I'm not sure how they will fare. Anna & Ric attended to a lot of our watering needs.

Michael took care of the plum trees, due to the heat and number of fruit on the branches quite a few fruit had shrivelled. I cleared a couple of garden beds to prepare for new plantings. Lisa then helped clear out one of our mint beds. Just after the visitors left, Veronica arrived, talk about timing! We ended up brewing a pot of mint tea using some of the harvested mint. Sitting around and having a chat for a good hour- some of us even longer!

Op Shop News

Books come to our Op Shop in heavy box loads. A friend of ours donates a full box and then buys a different one. Unlike clothing, which gets worn and thin from constant wash and wear, books go on and on, being read and reread with very little change.

Many amongst our selection of books are in almost pristine condition. Dare it be said, some of them may never have even been opened. Books are such personal items, selecting for others is challenging.

your plants. If you don't already have mulch on your garden, now would be a great time to spread some and don't spread it too thinly either. Keep yourself and your pets hydrated.

As this Thursday (16th Feb) will be so hot we will no doubt be meeting in the morning. If you'd like to join us, check our Facebook page for an update.

If this week is too hot, we hope you'll visit us on a Thursday in the near future. No gardening experience needed!

94 Maude Street, Dunolly.

Dunolly Op Shop can support your efforts to supply books for your children. A few coins will bring hours of intellectual enrichment for your child. When one box of books has been read, bring the books back and select some more.

A good range of materials, for our sewing and fabric-working folk, is available at the Op Shop. The colour, feel or amount of fabric available may well start your creative juices flowing. Come and see if our sections can get you started on a productive venture.

Tiny Towns Arts Trail is back for 2023

Things are gearing up and the Tiny Towns Arts Trail team is full steam ahead as we prepare for the Trail weekend, which coincides each year with the ANZAC long weekend .

Tiny Towns Arts Trail is an independent, artist run initiative, that gets off the ground each year, due to the dedication of the artists and supporters who work tirelessly in the lead up the trail, to make it an event to remember. This year, we were lucky enough to receive a small, once-off tourism grant from the Australian Government’s Regional Arts Fund and Regional Arts Australia to help promote the event, which is exciting.

On a final note, the Tiny Towns Arts Trail team would like to express our appreciation to all the artist, community members and businesses that support us each year, either through participation in the event, encouragement for the work we do, or by opening their wall spaces as makeshift galleries for artists to hang their work.

The dates for the 2023 Tiny Towns Arts Trail are Saturday 22, Sunday 23 and Monday 24 April.

Stories from Cynthia

The Times They Are A’Changing” - so sang Bob Dylan, and times have certainly changed drastically in my lifetime. One of my granddaughters has moved from Canberra to Maryborough since Christmas and her two older children have commenced school at St. Augustine’s, the older, a girl just turned nine and her six-year-old brother. When the older one was telling me about the classroom equipment and methods of teaching in Grade 4, my eyes kept opening wider and wider. I was a high school teacher in my younger days and now I was being introduced to the present education system in a world quite alien to me. So, I decided to pay a visit to St Augustine’s and see for myself what is happening in the schoolroom these days. Sonia, the principal, was only too happy to give me the rundown on this very attractive and welcoming school.

Having been an English teacher, I mentioned how our classes had tubs of the set books for all the different classes and the book monitor would hand them round to each student and then collect them at the end of the class. Well, they do still have a similar system but these are not ordinary paper books. They are called Chromebooks and they are electronic and accessible to E books. Grades 3 to 6 have one on one devices and students can use their home computers to access the school lessons. Chalk blackboards are a thing of the past, now it’s whiteboards and Smart TVs. Of course, there is still plenty of written work with pen and paper because our children are certainly not being turned into robots. School camps vary according to the classes, with trips to the city and the beach, but the one that appeals to me is the Preps’ excursion and they are known as Foundation class. Their outing starts with breakfast at school,

swimming pool, library, the gardens etc. and finally returning to the school after everyone has gone home, where they are served tea. This is a very exciting day for the small ones and parents don’t collect them until 7 o’clock. My great grandchildren just love their school and have settled in very quickly. In no way making comparisons, I do need to say that having volunteered at our Dunolly Primary school years ago, I found it a most caring environment, the staff so involved with the students, great pastoral care, and I am still in touch with two of my protégés. Looking back on my teaching days, I took early retirement to move to Dunolly and buy a business so when I left Montmorency High, electronic devices were in a very early stage with two rather primitive computers for the whole school, each form having two sessions per week to learn computer, which was mainly Word Processing. Don’t laugh when I go back further and tell you about my convent schooling. We had to form lines in complete silence before being directed to each classroom. If Reverend Mother occasionally appeared on the stairs or showing visitors around, we had to curtsey; we had to wear gloves to religious instruction and to weekly General Assembly with all nuns present, when everyone received a conduct card for the previous week. I would hate to tell you what colour my card often was except it wasn’t the colour I would have liked. How times change.

Tender to rebuild Octagonal Pool

Council will use the $2 million in Victorian Government funding to upgrade the octagonal pool at the heritage-listed Maryborough Outdoor Pool complex.

In developing the tender Council has worked closely with Heritage Victoria to ensure the significance of the complex is maintainedwith the Heritage Victoria permit already in place and ready for works to start.

As part of this Council worked closely with heritage conservators to research the best method to recover and preserve the existing tiles of the octagonal pool. The process involved researchers at Melbourne University who undertook specific experiments with sections of the tiles The project scope includes an entirely new pool shell, recovery and re-application of as many of the original tiles as possible and repairs to the concourse. The advertising of the tender follows Council, in July last year, endorsing a report on the future of the heritage-listed Maryborough 50 metre pool.

Following further assessment of the 50-metre pool, it was identified that the condition of the pool had declined since the previous assessment in April 2021 with the pool having reached the

‘end of life’ stage meaning it is not safe to be re-opened until the pool is demolished and rebuilt. Using the $2 million in Victorian Government funding announced in 2020 on the 50-metre pool would have been a short-term patch job and would not have addressed the increasingly declining integrity of the pool shell.

Central Goldfields Shire Maryborough Ward Councillor Geoff Lovett, said Council was committed to doing everything it can to see the Maryborough Outdoor Pool rebuilt and reopened for the community.

“It was a considered and difficult decision for Council to make last year to have to close the Outdoor Pool.

“Rest assured that behind the scenes we continue to advocate tirelessly to State and Federal governments for the $6 million we need to rebuild this heritage listed, recreation and sporting icon so as to ensure it can be enjoyed by future generations.” said Cr. Lovell.

Baking with Bella

With 4 trees laden with plums, it was time to learn to make Jam! I know there are a lot of recipes out there, but this one worked to make a beautiful flavour and was not overly sweet.

Plum Jam

Ingredients

Juice from 1 lemon

A small amount of water (2 tablespoons if that)

1.5kgs plums (seeds removed)

900g sugar

3 teaspoons pectin

Sterilised glass jars

Method

1. Remove the pips from your plums- this will take a while, see if you can enlist some help!

2. Put the plums in a pot with the lemon juice

3. Cook until the mixture breaks down a little (about 10-15 mins)

4. Add in your pectin mixed with the water- make sure you do this, otherwise you will have pectin clumps in your jam.

5. Stir well, then add in the sugar.

6. Cook until the jam ‘sheets’ off the spoon- this means the drops fall together/stick together nicely.

7. Use a sterilised measuring cup to pour into sterilised glass jars

8. Enjoy and share with friends!

Central Goldfields Residents and Ratepayers Assoc. Inc.

On 7th February, we held our first Ratepayers public meeting for 2023 at Carisbrook.

At that meeting, discussion was centred around the Carisbrook levee.

Also at the meeting, a big direction was given that the community is fed up with waiting for all authorities to stop passing the buck regarding clearing of the creek.

So, it was voted that an effort be made to investigate options for a community effort, and finally get this task underway.

At present several local residents are doing just that, and hopefully we can bring some positive news in the coming weeks.

Extremely well done to all those assisting a fantastic community project. Hopefully by 2024, we will see that creek finally cleared.

Our next public meeting is anticipated for Dunolly on 4th April 2023, location to be confirmed. CGR&RAI would like this to be a meeting where the residents come, participate and possibly set a task to be achieved.

Flynn Ward has a fantastic community spirit, with events happening throughout the year. Please keep in mind the coming Tiny Town Arts Trail and the Dunolly Country Market.

How many projects have this Ward (not to mention the Shire) been promised and have not been

delivered or completed? Is it time to have those projects all done? With promises of Gordon Gardens, the dump point and ongoing lobbying for Deledio oval, roadside slashing and maintenance, just to name a few, is it time to push the barrow for projects which can be completed and done to a reasonable standard?

It is time for the community to have that discussion with Council, insist projects are completed, and for Councillors and Council to start listening to the community.

Our future is not a council directive it is a community effort. We must walk that path together. There are still huge concerns around Council's planning processes, and staff turnover is still way too high.

We are seeing many Council tenders placed online; however a large percentage of those tenders are being readvertised several times.

Just because it is placed for tender, does not mean it is going to be done. Look at the promises with Gordon Gardens, still ongoing.

Time to get all the backlog of projects completed. Please keep an eye out for each other and stay safe.
