Editorial

It is fitting that our first issue for 2023 celebrates the best of us at the Dunolly Australian Day Awards. An invisible thread joins the award winners - one of unselfish dedication and commitment to our community.

And yet another important thread binds them which is the making and lifeblood of our community and that is - VOLUNTEERING.

Without volunteers in every part of our lives, much of our community needs, aspirations and vital services would simply not be possible.

Our worthy Award winners represent the very best of our voluntary community and we, the evergrateful community sincerely Thanks You.

With a new year comes new aims, new purpose and new direction. To this end, The Welcome Record will be undergoing a “Refresh” of the community “Book” focusing on readability and clarity.

As Dunolly continues to welcome new residents, young families with different interests, needs and stories - the “soul” of the Book will always remain as an inclusive record of local news, information and stories with a guiding principle on what is important for our Community to know, discover and celebrate

Throughout the coming weeks, you will notice a change in the way The Welcome Record looks as we make continuing strides to “refresh” the Book to record more local voices, current issues, historical and aspirational stories.

To achieve our goals, The Welcome Record needs more volunteers to help us remain as the heart and soul of the Community in this technological age. We welcome any time and help that anyone is willing to spare, so do come and be a part of our 40+years volunteer story.

Our email and phone details are on the left for you to contact us for a chat on how you can help and we look forward to welcoming you all.

DUNOLLY CELEBRATES AUSTRALIA DAY

School’s Parents and Friends Association President as well as being on the school council – all this whilst raising her young family.

An exemplary role model for younger children, Young Citizen of the Year - Thang Nguyen also shines at sport where he plays cricket for LaanecoorieDunolly and also golf for Dunolly. He was also awarded the “Dunolly Primary School Values Award – Community Scholarship”. Thang hopes one day to be playing Cricket for Victoria and eventually Australia. Finally, an extra Award for Mia Schodde who received an Honourable Mention for her outstanding achievements at both netball and little athletics.

Mthrough the days formal proceedings.

Many nominations were received for the popular Dunolly CFA who undertook the tasks of both the CFA and the SES with the absence of a SES service in Dunolly. The Dunolly Fire Brigade received the Community Award in recognition of their outstanding level of responsiveness and wide ranging assistance rendered to those in need and servicing the wider community.

Captain Greg Humphrey thanked the Community for helping them obtain their new much-needed vehicle which was proudly displayed.

Whilst Citizen of the Year Mel Schodde expressed how “overwhelmed” she was to receive her award, encouraging everyone to volunteer as “you can meet people especially if you’re new to Dunolly and become a part of the community.”

A true definition of the quiet achiever, her many voluntary contributions to the community included being the Netball President of the Dunolly Football Netball Club, the Primary

The celebrations ended in a personal, heartfelt speech by special guest Ron Deledio.

A third generation of Italian immigrants on his father’s side and a fourth generation from a convict beginning on his Mum’s side, Ron felt “qualified” to share what being an Australian means to him.

Ron spent his formative years in Dunolly with cherished memories of playing sport, swimming, fishing and living in a safe, carefree, “amazing” childhood, because “someone in the community was always looking out for us.

There is a saying amongst African people “It takes a Village to raise a child” and that was never more true than here in Dunolly.”

It’s that upbringing, of which my Mum and Dad, my family, the people of this community supported and the values they instilled that ultimately, had a positive influence on my life and provided the necessary principles that drove me to achieve high levels in sport and in business.”

He concluded, “So back to my message for today - how an

Australian upbringing can change lay the right foundation and I had nothing but love and support from my family and this community - Rory and Dot next door, Ettie and Norm Burns, the other Auntie Doll (dad’s sister) two doors away…all beautiful people. Joe Lacey, Tubby Hunt, the Polinelli family, the Raselli family, Heenans, Watts, familiesthe list is endless. All winners, All encouragers- all of Dunolly was my family. MY foundation was solid!

“My view of this beautiful country we live in was always so closely aligned with all I knew to be true about Dunolly and my upbringing. “Dunolly was my example of what Australia and Australians were like and for that reason I could never be convinced that we do not have THE most wonderful country on earth and having now travelled to over 50 other countries around the world nothing has happened to change that opinion we truly do live in ‘the lucky country’.”

Thanks to: Dunolly CFA for providing the food donated by Woolworths Maryborough, the Bowls Club for their constant help and support and Jan Stephenson for the Music.

Rosie’s Rambles

Hello and a belated Happy New Year. I have apparently decided that this year will continue as last year - I washed a tissue last week.

I decided that I would make some condensed milk salad dressing at the beginning of the heat waveeasy peasy? No! There has to be a drama. First, I put the milk in a jar that was too narrow to stir, added the vinegar, mustard and salt and created a blob of unmixable gunk.

I scrapped the lot into a jug and attacked it with the Bamix. That created a very nice mayo at last. Washing up was interesting - two measuring cups, a jug, several spoons and the Bamix. No fuss!

My electricity account ended with 8 cents, so I dug up a five cent piece, a two and one cent coin and paid Michael with it. Not legal tender anymore, so I had to use a ten cent piece - and lost the great sum of two cents .

My hoya has gone mad this year. Only one bloom last year, five so far this year and plenty of buds. Must be all the banana peels it has been fed with. I love the pretty pink flowers.

DUNOLLY COUNTRY MARKET

The Dunolly Traders Inc made up of the shopkeepers & traders of Dunolly are now the committee that manage our local market. We have changed the date and changed the name too. The market now operates on the 4th Sunday of each month.

To attract more stallholders and give them a chance to test the market we have made the first three market bookings free. This also applies to current stallholders. We will not be asking shopkeepers to pay a $5 fee to have their stock outside their shops either.

Fundraising will take on a different approach in the future. We hope to attract fresh new stalls to the market and have music as part of the day. If you are in a car/bike club we would love to have you visit Dunolly, if are you clearing a house or shed, come and have a stall or three. We welcome bric a brac & secondhand as this attracts visitors to the market too. If you want to discuss or ask any questions, please call our market manager Lynda Vater 0418875453 or lynda.vater@gmail.com.

STOP Fruit Fly

Last season the Dunolly Community Garden hosted a workshop led by Susan Blampied, a horticultural expert who works for the South Australian Fruit Fly Control team. The work the team does in the Berri district has enabled the community there to retain a fruit fly free status. Unfortunately, Dunolly is not quite so lucky and last year fruit fly destroyed quite a considerable amount of local home grown produce in the district.

The Dunolly Community Garden has free fruit fly traps available and a limited amount of fruit fly netting available at cost. We urge anyone growing tomatoes or fruit to drop into the garden to pick up a free trap. The garden is located at 94 Maude St, and we meet every Thursday afternoon.

If you require a fruit fly trap and are unable to come to the garden to pick one up, please email dunollycommunitygarden@gmail.com or send a message via our Facebook page and we will hopefully be able to deliver one to you, if you live locally.

Located in the old Nurses’ Home beside the hospital on 18 Havelock Street (top of Bull Street). Monday to Thursday 9.30am to 3pm; and Dunolly Arts Hub, on the corner of Thompson and Alice Streets.

Sunday:

• Golden Triangle Archers meet on the fourth Sunday at 10am, Deledio Reserve on Elgin Street (behind the RL Williams oval). Covered shoes compulsory, and parents must stay with children.

COMING SOON:

Introduction to computers: Call me at the Centre for more details- this course will be very informal. The Hospital Auxiliary meets at the Centre on the first Monday of the month and the CWA meet at the Centre on the first Wednesday of the month. Both organisations are looking for new members, so please call me for further details!

The Whispering Weeders is a friendly group of like -minded ladies (or gents) who enjoy visiting gardens and nurseries, learning about them from others and sharing a cuppa or lunch on our outings.

We meet on the last Monday of the month and no gardening is involved, only some appreciation is all you’ll need. There is no commitment, just rock up to whatever might interest you. Details will be published in The Welcome Record prior to each visit, or you can call Kath at the centre.

The Welcome Record

Stories from Cynthia

Christmas 2022 is already a distant memory as we now anticipate another year, hopefully more promising than so many of last year’s dreadful events worldwide. Australians are not stereotyped celebrators of Christmas and the old English tradition of snowflakes, warm fires and roasting chestnuts doesn’t fit our climate or lifestyle.

Many Australians still settle for the turkey and plum pud, but there is a great number having barbecues, seafood on the beach or, maybe just eating outside in the backyard.

Ours was the latter, but with a rather last-minute change of plan. After having everybody travelling to Dunolly last year, mainly because I was having a big birthday, we decided to have a quiet, simple affair, with just four of us at my daughter’s place in Maryborough.

Mel and I would be joined by my granddaughter, who has moved to Melbourne with husband and toddler. Then everything came unstuck when my middle granddaughter changed her mind at the last minute and decided to fly down from Canberra with her three small children, then my stepson, who had planned to join family in Tasmania, was unable to go, so he decided to join us too.

That was exciting news, but too late to order a ham from our butcher. Suddenly I had to alter my plan of not cooking the traditional pudding and set to buying ingredients and yet again doing my boil and bubble. Previously, every year I had produced the plum pudding, according to mother’s recipe and always made enough for a second pudding, another tradition shared with friends who had settled in Dunolly at the same time as we did.

They purchased the pub and we bought the licensed grocer within months of each other, so we go back a long way. Christmas lunch was prawns, salads and meats, no turkey but we did have the bon bons with the tired old jokes. Eg. Q. Did you go to Carols? A. Yes, I went but she wasn’t home. Ha ha.

Now that we had a crowd coming, it was decided to have Christmas lunch outside. Mel had recently bought a small caravan, so by adding a second awning to the one on the van and with a big umbrella, we set the table up in lovely cool shade. A master stroke was Mel buying a big, netted-in trampoline as a Christmas present for the kids, the nets making it safe for even the tiniest one. As it was a hot day, they put a sprinkler underneath and that was a huge success, taking care of the small fry all afternoon.

The weather favoured this year’s Christmas, with warmer weather than we had experienced in previous weeks, with those sudden storms and torrential rain. That strange summer weather has had a bad effect on my garden because quite a few of my hardy plants are now dying or have died. One

lavender bush has died and the other one seems to be on its last legs, there are no nectarines on the tree and my crepe myrtle hasn’t flowered.

I always keep an eye out for Monika’s small crepe myrtle opposite my back gate, as it always flowers prolifically, yet so far this year, nothing, nor has Kate’s most famous, huge crepe myrtle, which is usually covered in flowers by now. Returning home from Christmas, all my pansies in hanging pots on the verandah had gone kerflop. What is happening to the world?

Anyway, let’s all have a bright and happy New Year.

MAYORAL COLUMN

Last week, as Mayor of the Central Goldfields Shire, it was my great pleasure to be involved in officiating the Australia Day ceremony in Maryborough. In addition to welcoming 14 new residents to our Shire as part of the Citizenship Ceremony we also announced our Central Goldfields Shire Australia Day Award recipients.

Tony Macer was a deserving recipient of the Citizen of the Year Award, as was Hannah Lanfranchi who was presented with the Young Citizen of the Year Award.

It was wonderful to see the Dunolly Gold Rush Festival presented with the Community Award of the Year – with Rod Stuart the Dunolly District Inc President there to accept the award on behalf of the organising committee.

The return of the Dunolly Gold Rush Festival after a 16-year interruption came together by a hardworking group of volunteers through Dunolly, Today, Tomorrow

The core aim of the revived Festival was "to put the smiles back on the everyone's faces”, bring people into the town to share the Gold Rush heritage and stimulate the economy of Dunolly.

It quickly gathered the support of local residents, businesses and held on the 23rd of October, 2022, the event attracted around 1500 people throughout the course of the day, bringing an economic boost to the town.

An event like this doesn’t happen without a hardworking volunteer organising committee. The Dunolly & District Inc did an incredible amount of work in pulling this event together and this award is testament to that. Congratulations to everyone involved.

Lastly, just a reminder that entry to the Dunolly outdoor pool is FREE this summer when daytime temperatures are above 25 degrees, all the way through until March.

Stage two of the Maryborough Railway Station Activation project will commence in January. To make way for the project to begin, the Central Goldfields Visitor Information Centre will be relocated to a new temporary home at 53 Burns Street, Maryborough.

Maryborough Pride Festival

The inaugural Maryborough Pride Festival was successfully launched, on 28 January.

The event had a family-friendly, country fair “feel” with marquees and bunting aimed at youth.

Cr Sproull said it was important for the festival to focus on youth.

“The alarming statistic is that queer youth suicide is the largest single demographic for suicide. The event has a major focus on starting conversations and enabling conversations about identity and allowing our young people to find a space that’s theirs.’

The event kicked up with a rainbow conga line at Station Domain and continued with various other festivities including Maryborough Brass Band, a Drag Show, school bands.

“We know we need to support our young people and show that we are an accepting and inclusive community, if we do this then those young people would be more likely to stay in the community and

As children across Australia begin a new school year, Kids Helpline is reminding families to keep an eye on their children’s wellbeing at what can be an anxious and stressful time.

“It’s not surprising that heading back to school or the important step of starting school for the first time can be an anxious time for children.” said *yourtown CEO Tracy Adams.

Kids Helpline @ School, one of yourtown’s service offerings, strengthens the reach of Kids Helpline by providing evidenceinformed learning to support the social and emotional wellbeing of children when at school with topics such as bullying, resilience, friendships and student wellbeing.

Kids Helpline @ School supports primary school students’ mental health literacy, normalisation of help-seeking behaviours, and promotion of positive health and wellbeing.

Made possible thanks to the

support of Bupa Foundation, it uses digital technology to link Kids Helpline professional counsellors with students and their teachers in interactive education sessions.

“We know that mental health challenges often begin during childhood and if left unattended they can lead to poor outcomes in adulthood. Teachers can connect their classroom to a Kids Helpline counsellor free of charge simply by booking a session at kidshelpline.com.au/schools/ primary for a session that is both educational and interactive in a fun, engaging environment,” said Ms. Adams.

The innovative school-based program has supported over 100,000 primary school students in the past 2 years.

Kids Helpline has an established reputation as a first point of contact for children and young people who need counselling support.

Available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, children are able to choose

Central Goldfields Residents and Ratepayers Assoc. Inc.

Welcome all to 2023. A fantastic start to the year with the Australia Day celebrations across our country.

Several of us attended the Dunolly celebrations - a very special mention for that event. It was wellorganised, well-attended, presented and wellreceived. Congratulations to all involved. Well done to those putting their hands up for committees for the Dunolly Market and The Welcome Record, these are both two key parts of Dunolly. If you have a few spare moments, why not contact them to offer some community support. It will very much appreciated.

CGR&RAI believes that 2023 is the year where we will see a lot of change, more community involvement and much more transparency. That begins with the community.

With all the election promises and past projects either not delivered or not completed, it is now our place to get these projects completed. The Gordon Gardens, how long have we heard of promises and are still waiting? Not to overlook the Deledio Oval promise and hopefully we will see the dump point receive the accreditation it should have, just to mention a few.

It is our place as residents, to keep our elected representative and Council aware of these promises. The same applies to the issues with the roads and long grass.

CGR&RAI encourages the community to email their concerns, reports and requests to Council, and keep sending them in again and again. We believe our Council need to learn how to be a community council again, and we are a very key part of that.

By helping Council be aware of the issues at large, at the same time complimenting the Shire for the good deeds done, that hopefully will bring about positive results.

CGR&RAI's full weekly report will be available here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1164790124076391

Our next public meeting will be at Carisbrook Senior Citizens Hall, Urquhart Street, Carisbrook on Tuesday 7th Feb from 7pm. All welcome – see you there. We thank you all for your efforts. Please keep safe, support others and work together.

Due for a vaccination?

The sessions conducted by Council’s team are free for vaccinations on the National Immunisation Program (NIP), and for all ages. Vaccines also available for private purchase for non-NIP vaccines. Dunolly - Sessions held at Dunolly Senior Citizens Hall 21 Bull Street from 10am to 11amWednesday 22nd February and Wednesday 22nd March. Bookings are preferred.

Dunolly Gold Rush Festival wins Community Award

At the Maryborough Australia Day Awards held on 26 January, our Dunolly Gold Rush Festival won the Community Award of the Year.

Rod Stuart, President of Dunolly, Today, Tomorrow – the organisers of the Festival, proudly received the Award on behalf of the organising Committee and the many community groups and their volunteers including The Neighbourhood Centre, the Arts Hub, The Golden Triangle Archers, The Historical Precinct Committee whose hard work and dedicated commitment to the Project truly made the Festival a resounding success. The Award was presented to a group/organisation which has had a significant contribution to the local community.

Congratulations everyone!
