It is a bitter sweet pill that we swallow with the front cover of our final issue for the year being a unique and personal tribute to Esmé Flett, one of The Welcome Record’s pioneering volunteers by celebrated cartoonist James Stuart (Read the story behind the cover in our special Tribute to Esmé on Pg 13)
Her passing last week leaves an indelible mark in the Community and “The Book” as Esmé affectionally called The Welcome Record. She will always be missed but will always live on as we continue to publish “The Book” without her.
Vale Esmé and Thank you
As we come to the end of the year, with all the many celebrations throughout the coming months as well as enjoying a belated Summer, we should all remember to stay safe by NOT drinking and driving According to the experts, even one drink can impact your neurocognition and your ability to drive. Trying to beat the breathalyser is a very expensive and dangerous fool’s game for which no one wins.
On a lighter note, don’t forget that the Dunolly Pool will be FREE this Summer until 13th March 2023.
The pool will be open every day other than Christmas Day and on days where the forecasted temperature is less than 25 degrees.
As always Be Prepared and Aware for the upcoming Bushfire Season. Be kind and celebrate with joy and good tidings for everyone. See you all in the New Year!

Letters to the Editor
Floods on Burnt Creek Dunolly
Dear Editor
About fifteen years ago the Central Goldfields Shire Council built a temporary road crossing on Burnt Creek in Maude St South Dunolly Consisting of two pipes for water to pass through, they added a concrete wall connecting the pipes together about a foot higher on the top end causing a blockage After the rain this causes water to back up and find another level lower than the Council crossing. This new water path is through my sheds and our studio. We have taken this to Council only to be told it’s not their problem. Why not? They built it
The new path for the water goes through the house lower down the creek from me then through Rachel Buckley’s. The problem is easily solved that “Blind Freddy” could fix this in a couple of hours But the Council keep putting it in the too hard basket! I figure after the next flood I will have no option but to seek legal action to get the Councils' attention, to take this matter seriously, as the next weather pattern is already in the pipeline

Esmé Flett - a small tribute honouring a large life
Dear Editor
The 6th of December will be a sad day for many years to come Felt by many, more deeply by some. We honour a wife, a mother, a daughter, a friend, an aunt, a grandmother - and so much more As an exceptional proof-reader for The Welcome Record, whilst I was one of the editors, I came to know Esmé's excellent attention to detail with layout and wording of the paper (also known as The Book)
Mixed with humour, her love of words, her quips and wisdom helped me navigate the intricacies of newspaper layout and placement of adverts etc. She taught me a lot, not only newspaper ‘mores’ and ethics, but also living with kindness and humility
To say Esmé will be missed by her family and friends is true, and inadequate. Esmé's passing leaves a large hole in the Dunolly Community. She was involved in so many areas of the town - St John’s Church, Dunolly Players and Gilbert and Sullivan Society events and The Welcome Record, are but a few of the groups Esmé gave her time and skills to.
Esmé also held a wealth of information about Dunolly's history due to the Flett family's long association with the district over many years. May each and every person whose life was touched by this generous, strong, vibrant woman, reflect on their memories and give thanks for their knowing her I certainly will

Bereavement
We are deeply distressed to announce that our beloved Esmé Flett passed away at Ballarat Hospital on 6th December 2022 Esmé was our pianist/organist and a founding member of our Gilbert & Sullivan Society and played for many concerts at Buckley's of Dunolly as well as the organ at St John’s Anglican Church. Esmé has always been encouraging and supportive to our local performers and was a great lover of music and performing arts.
Our deepest condolences to Keith and family Esmé will be sorely missed and never forgotten

Rosie’s Rambles
It is the silly season again for cricket commentators I heard one say on the radio that if they kept their eyes to the ground, they might hear something about one of the players. I bought two punnets of seedlings from a hardware store in Maryborough a while back Found the receipt in my bag it is 45 centimetres long!
I have a bad habit of leaving screen doors open if I only going out for a few nutes. Last week I went and when I came back, e was our resident ngle-back lizard climbing up the inside of the screen door. It must have wandered in while I was outside, and the wind closed the door I put it out in the pigface and the cat spent quite a while staring at it I think she must have been hissed at and warned off It could easily have been a much-less-welcome visiting reptile.
The quickest way to find something that you thought you had lost is to buy a new one. I should have remembered that before I invested in new secateurs.
Heard on a Ballarat ad for used cars "Don't go to the other cowboys, get your new car from us."
Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Rosie
Just for Fun
Overheard at the Women's Fellowship Christmas party - "When it comes to a Secret Santa gift, I'm going to choose something I bought That way I know I'll get something I like”.
The juniors had been learning the carol "Born in a stable so bare" and afterwards they drew some pictures. One little lad had included Mary, Joseph, Jesus and a big brown blob at the back "What's that"? the teacher asked “That's the stable bear, of course" replied the boy
The awkward month
Anyone who has a birthday in December knows that they are likely to be overlooked. Celebrations are forgotten or linked to the Christmas rush and presents Very disheartening to be forgotten!
I have two sisters who were born in December
If they moan, I just tell them to think how Mum felt in her full bloom, during the heat (as one was born between Christmas and New Year) as Mum struggled to serve up a hot Christmas dinner whilst she was in wait I say to this sister, be like the horses, who all celebrate their birthdays together in August She could choose another date, but no, she is stubborn. “I have never had a real party on my birthday and Mum even forgot me one year when I was young”!
This year she is 70, so Kath wanted to do something ‘BIG’ but it wasn’t to be. Restaurants are closed following Christmas or planning for New Year Catering staff are over the excitement and any guest asked to commit are on short breaks until after New Year. Woe is me and my sister! In desperation, she booked a walk on Mt Kosciusko, taking her away from the approaching birthday –how can you age or celebrate if one can’t find you? But what are friends for? Her cycle group rallied and will have a special coffee after their ride and family will see her over Christmas after all, oops!!
Then, as if by a miracle, my other sister received an invite for High Tea on the 23rd of December at the Windsor in Melbourne; this includes our birthday girl, amongst others who have birthdays that collide and which are to be jointly celebrated. So, saved by the extended friendship circle. Christmas needn’t be mentioned, which does bring on frothing at the mouth and stamping of feet, called a three-year-old tantrum The rest of us can relax and enjoy the festive season. ‘Happy Birthday’ to all December babies! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all

king with Rhonda’ for the year
Our final session with Rhonda this year is this Monday the 19th at 1.30 pm here at the Centre. Our group have made some wonderful cards recently, and with Christmas so close this is a terrific opportunity to create some lasting memories for loved ones. The cost is $12, and is all-inclusive.
Coming up in the New Year
Once I’m back from leave, my number one job is to purchase devices for the Centre, so we can run informal computer classes!
I’m hoping that by mid-February we’ll have a wonderful tutor lined up too, so watch this space The classes will be very informal, with the main object being to build people’s confidence in navigating this online world we’ve made for ourselves.
I’m hoping we can finally get our astronomy club up and running- the weather this year has simply been too temperamental for me to even consider starting it yet.
We are hoping to bring art/craft classes for kids at the Arts Hub next year - this will be absolutely fantastic for our younger community members We also have a few ideas for teens as well, so we’ll be planning all of this in early February.
I wish everyone in our community a safe and happy Christmas, with a prosperous New Year. Many thanks to The Welcome Record team for giving me this column space

Flood recovery – roads
Our roads, like many roads across the state, have been hard hit by the recent flood events.
Full restoration works on our road, bridge and drainage network will be a long-term challenge. It’s going to take time and will require extensive funding through Victorian Government recovery funding streams
To secure the funding, the condition of our roads, bridges and drainage culverts are being assessed by an independent contractor, with more than 60 percent of our road and small drain network already assessed
More than 880 repairs have already been identified as part of this assessment. Work has also started on assessment of our major bridges and culverts
A priority list of works and improvements is now being compiled to be submitted to the Victorian Government for funding to deliver the works that are needed.
This includes a list of emergency repairs, with a contractor already being sought to complete these works.
Get your skates on!
In case you missed the news last week, the new Skate and Scooter Park in Maryborough is ready for use. The new facility is located at the Adventure Playground at Princes Park, Maryborough. The project is jointly funded by the Victorian Government through the Sports Recreation Victoria – Local Sports Infrastructure Fund - Community Bank Avoca, Maryborough and St Arnaud (in partnership with the Maryborough Lions Club) and
Free Green Waste
We’re offering free green waste disposal to encourage residents to prepare their properties for the upcoming fire season. Free green waste drop off is available to residents at the Carisbrook, Talbot and Dunolly transfer stations until Sunday 18th December Residents should start preparing their properties by:
® Clearing undergrowth and fallen branches.
® Moving firewood away from the house.
® Cleaning leaves from gutters.
® Ensuring that grass is cut.
Mowing update
As one of the wettest years on record in Victoria, the saturated ground conditions have made it difficult for Council to keep on top of growth along our roadsides and reserves. For Council to manage the growth along our roadsides and reserves, over the coming weeks we’ll be using internal and external contractor crews. Crews commenced in the Dunolly area and are moving south. For a list of roads that have been mowed so far to date visit: www centralgoldfields.vic.gov au/ roadsideslashing2022

Councillor Liesbeth Long
As this will be my last column before Christmas, I thought I’d do a bit of a reflection on the ‘Year that Was’.
My absolute highlight this year, as your Flynn Ward Councillor, was seeing the return of the much-anticipated Dunolly Gold Rush Festival in October. So much work went into this by the DDI, the traders and the local community
I was humbled to be the festival’s official Ambassador, which to me was the cherry on top I was super proud to see the event roll out and be so successful, it was a real boon to Dunolly and surrounds
Bealiba residents didn’t sit on their haunches either and a small but enthusiastic group organised a community day at the Bealiba Hall in April This was well attended by locals both long term and newly arrived It gave people an opportunity to meet other locals as well as hear from the various community groups who are active in the town.
Australia Day in Dunolly was a well organised
morning and it was a pleasure to be the MC once again. Local identities were honoured on the day with medals and certificates.
It was also wonderful to see the newly formed Dunolly Traders Assn Inc go from a fledging group, to one that went all out during the Dunolly Gold Rush Festival with fabulous goldrush themed hessian flags and a ‘Trader’s Chase’.
The proposed new Deledio Rec Reserve Pavilion received both Federal and State election promises, but due to the coalitions not being elected the funding was not allocated.
However, the push for funding for Deledio continues, watch this space. It wasn’t all doom and gloom though, as the DFNC received $728,000 worth of State funding to rebuild the netball courts! A magnificent achievement due to a lot of hard work by Central Goldfields Shire Council and the committee
This is just a snippet of some highlights, but there were many more. It has been wonderful to be your ward Councillor for another year and I would like to thank each and every one of you for your continued support
Wishing you and yours a very Merry Christmas and a safe New Year
Cr Liesbeth Long

VALE ESMÉ
Excerpt from The People of the Book: Dunolly and It’s Welcome Record
“By 1983 the Dunolly Welcome Record had become a major undertaking and premises were obtained at Mrs Kitty Daly’s shop in Broadway. There were at this time two typists and the band of volunteers were producing 750 copies each week
Records show that between 1983 and 1986 Mrs Kaye Polinelli, Mrs Esmé Flett and Mrs Robyn Anderson took on roles as typists and the folders were Mrs Kaye Davies, Mrs Elaine McHoul, Mrs McNicol, and Mr and Mrs Des Melton.”
Since then, after more than 39 years, for everyone who was privileged to know her, it was clear that being a volunteer typist was only one of her many talents. Her intelligence, wit and dedication to editorial integrity was equally matched by her love of music, of Community and her constant striving for perfection.
Her remarkable sparkling, vivid blue eyes were the best introduction to a remarkable lady
The Welcome Record volunteers were saddened and shocked to hear of the sudden death of Esmé Flett last Tuesday night Esmé was a valued volunteer and a very well-known identity in Dunolly
We all remember her talent at the piano and the many occasions when she played the organ in the church.
Esmé was a familiar sight around the town on her scooter, always cheerful, despite some health problems. Esmé will be sadly missed We extend our sincere condolences to Keith, Julie, Norman, Rodney, Robyn and Esmé’s extended family.

The story behind the cover
….
“I'm sorry to hear about the passing of Esmé and I am still processing it, weeks ago when we last talked, she asked me if I was going to do a cover image again and I said I definitely would, but it was unfortunate I was unable to have one finished in time for her to see too I decided it would be good then if I also made the Christmas cover also a tribute to her work in the community and have Sam playing the piano, taught by Esmé herself, like she also taught me. ´

In the Veggie Garden
Here we are in the first month of Summer with mixed weather conditions one day hot and the next cold.
Once tomato plants start to make fruit feed the plants well, it makes better fruit and helps to keep the plants healthy If the roots of these plants get dry, the fruit is likely to develop blossom end rot, that is a dark rotten patch on the end of the tomato. Although some of the fruit will get the disease under any condition Dwarf beans are a favourite veggie over the summer months They give good results for the space and water that they require. From now until the end of February or mid March is the best time to sow butter beans, they like the warm weather to grow and mature Beetroot is a very handy veggie to have in the soil over the summer and autumn months, they keep well in the garden bed Sown at intervals will give a better chance of fresh roots over a long period of time.
January to March is the best time to sow carrots, late sowings of this variety will soil until early next spring time. Seeds sown over the hot weather are better
St John’s Wort
After the flooding St John’s Wort perforatum) suddenly sprang up acros house I read that the risk of spread region is greatest in a ‘wet year’ following St John’s wort has a long history of use inflammatory, astringent and antisep been used for centuries to treat men and nerve pain, but it has become a ser Australia. In pastures, St John’s wort to livestock. Cattle are highly sensitive poisoning
The plant can also cause central ner depression, spontaneous abortion, an problems leading to death in livestock. I and spent half an hour lifting the weeds an easy job, but it is alarming to see growing all along the creek.
Rach
keep the soil moist, until after they emerge well above soil level
From now until the end of January, seeds of the brassica family, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage and cauliflower can be sown, if preferred from plants. Most gardeners would rather buy plants ready to transplant out
It is not too late to plant out zucchini, squash or the small varieties of the pumpkin family. When the soil is warm plants will make rapid growth. Plant into well composted soil with well rotted manure added.
Fruit Trees
Fruits like nectarines, almonds, peaches and cherries will be forming, so net trees now to save fruits from birds, who have a knack of feeding on fruit before we do!
Control coddling moth with traps, eco oil to smother eggs or dipel for the grubs Remove any contaminated fruit and burn or feed to animals like chickens Remove fallen fruit as well Remove any loose bark and dead leaf build up in the branches and forks of the trees where caterpillars may look for places to pupate.

Eddington is looking very nice at the moment, there is a lot of green grass, which is very different from our usual dry brown dirt. The river here, has only just gone back to its norm height, after being up for a month or more It wasn as high as 2011, but the current was much stronge hurling logs high up in the paddocks. There will be enough firewood for next winter collected by driving around the high waterline! There are still lots of fence repairs being done, a our roads, like lot's of others, are full of washo and pot holes.
Our cattle went for a wander through t neighbour’s when the flood knocked the dividi fence down, and our solar pump ended up in a tree but we were no worse than anywhere else and didn’t have any major damage so we ca complain. It's nice to have some warm dry weathe at last as we head into the hay season
There are quite a few new faces in our town, w new houses going up and others changing hands We farewelled Cliff and Noela Kirby, who mov into Maryborough, we have new neighbours, K and Gaye, along with their little horses, and there are new people in the Kirby’s house. We welcome all our new “Eddingtonites”, and hop they enjoy living in our little town.

Stories from Cynthia
It seems strange that I have only recently been made aware of the abundance of bats in Dunolly I discovered this from friends, who recently came across a bat roosted above their bed just before bedtime. By turning on lights (I thought bats were blind, but apparently they have limited vision in dim light) and with lots of shooing, the bat was finally relocated.
In this same household, a bat at one stage resided in a bookcase If that had happened in my house, I think I would have moved out until the bat left, because I have always had a horror of bats, imagining they might fly in my face, as almost happened once.
It was when I lived in St Andrews, where the house had high ceilings with crossbeams A bat had lodged itself on a beam and when I went down the dark passage, it flew out and nearly hit me, causing me to panic and rush away to hide under the table. I stayed there until the kids managed to lure the bat outside
When I visited Bali, we were taken to see the bat cave and I was disgusted when I saw hundreds of bats hanging from the ceiling and acres of bat poo on the ground. A holy man guarded the entrance because bats were considered sacred and the bat cave a temple, but it made me shiver.
The other phobia I have is Bogong moths for the same reason When I was young, I came home late when all the family had gone to bed, to discover a huge Bogong Moth on the wall over my bed.
I tried to wake up one of my brothers, then my father but no one would help me, as they considered my scary problem trivial In the end I dragged my bed into the passage and shut the bedroom door rather than sleep in the same room as that huge moth
When Dad came down the passage in the morning, he barked his shins on my bed before he realised what I had done, but those are the lengths I would go to in order to preserve my sanity
One time when I encountered a large number of bats, it fascinated me rather than giving me my usual feeling of aversion. It was when visiting family in Hervey Bay; my daughter-in-law collected me from the Fraser Island ferry, drove to a spot along the Esplanade and told me to watch the sky
Suddenly the sky went dark when a huge colony of bats flew across from Fraser Island to nest, goodness knows where; apparently this was a nightly event
Then again, the same phenomena happened when I was staying at my brother and sister in law’s city apartment At sundown they took me on to the balcony and again the sky turned black when the colony of bats from the Botanical Gardens flew off towards their night-time venue
So, it seems that for me close-up bats can be my worst nightmare, but distant bats another story.
Now that I have been told about our local bats, apparently they can often be seen flying around some street lights in Dunolly, however I am not planning to go out of my way to look.

Saturday we played the first week of our 2 day game against Colts. After winning the toss and electing to bat the boys compiled their highest score so far this season 6/182. It was a fantastic team effort with almost half the boys making their highest ever score.
