THESPIS IN DUNOLLY
Last Saturday, in the Dunolly Town Hall, operetta lovers were treated to the delightful performance of Thespis, or The Gods Grown Old, by the very talented troupe from GSOV (Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Victoria)
This comic romp revolves around the gods of Olympus who are feeling their age and bemoaning the fact that mortals are not giving them the respect they are due, therefore why bother actually doing anything to help mankind? Apollo, the sun god, complains to his sister Diana, the moon goddess, who has just come off her shift, that he doesn’t feel like getting up today He was already up the day before and the day before that, but the mortals didn’t even bother to say a prayer to thank him for his light and warmth, so
why bother even trying Although he might just pop into Ballarat they would surely be grateful for the sun! Little bon mots like this run throughout the show, referencing nearby locations or current idioms to the delight of the audience.
The remainder of the gods appear in due course, all pondering their relevance to the world Suddenly into their sacred domain comes a troupe of actors celebrating the wedding of two of the company, with a picnic on the mountain top. The theatre manager is Thespis, full of his own self importance, considering himself almost godlike to his underlings. After all he has played a god in many productions.

Thespis in Dunolly
Continued from front page
The Olympian gods are outraged at the intrusion, however, after a discussion between Thespis and Jupiter, in which Jupiter explains the god’s predicament, Thespis proposes a solution. The actors will take over the duties of the gods for a year while the gods travel to earth to see for themselves what is happening
Jupiter is a little hesitant, wondering whether Thespis can handle the job Thespis has no doubt after all, he has played Jupiter many times. How hard can it be sitting up in the clouds? Thereafter follows all sorts of conundrums, with the actors not doing quite as well as they thought ruling the world, as they were too involved in their own predicaments.
It all makes for some very funny moments and of course the music is merry and bright Merry and bright is particularly relevant as this production was actually intended as a Christmas show at the Gaiety Theatre 150 years ago. The manager, John Hollingshead, invited W.S. Gilbert, who had written a number of plays for him, and a
Santa Show - Reminder
young up and coming composer, Arthur Sullivan, to work on a Christmas extravaganza.
Christmas shows usually ran for a season, and then were forgotten. But the critics thought differently. A reviewer for The Times said that “the dialogue throughout was superior in ability and point it was a daring experiment to produce such a piece it met with excellent reception.” This was in fact the first pairing of Gilbert and Sullivan and the rest, as they say, is history Much of the music of Thespis has been reused in Pirates of Penzance. Sullivan had the score of Thespis with him when he was mounting Pirates in 1879 in New York. He had accidently left the first act of Pirates’ music behind and so inserted music from Thespis into Pirates, namely Climbing Over Rocky Mountain.
Thank you GSOV for coming to Dunolly once again with your great band of players to entertain us, augmented by our own Rachel Buckley who played Venus. We so enjoy having you here.
A big hand also to Jan Brock and company who provided the delicious afternoon tea All in all, a lovely afternoon

Letter to the Editor
Dear Editor,
The Dunolly Museum article (page 15, Welcome Record Issue 42 23rd November) included a Publication Catalogue of books, maps and papers available for sale from the Museum and the date of publication.
I do hope that the local Primary Schools, in fact, all schools in Central Victoria, have copies to include in their curriculum plans. Language teaches culture and the culture of the Dja Dja Wurrung contains profound knowledge about our district
The author is John Tully, current President of the Goldfields Historical and Arts Society.
The Society recently enjoyed a “Break Up” lunch, which had to be relocated indoors due to the ferocious wind and bursts of sleet John and Sue Tully shared their picnic lunch at our table. Most tolerant and understanding wife award must go to Sue
One of the Publications is titled Dunolly Brothels (2013)! Could I suggest Historic Dunolly Brothels 1850 to 1900 may be a more appropriate title?

Upstaged!
I’ve been upstaged by a biscuit ! In my cameo role I sang “ What can we do to gain attention? “ I now have the answer just give them one of Jan Brock’s famous biscuits!
The audience and cast members waxed lyrical about Jan’s homemade treats at the interval of the musical comedy opera Thespis.
Actors often warn of the dangers of working with children and animals due to the fear of being upstaged (meaning all the audience attention is taken away from the actor)
But I was totally upstaged by a Jan Brocks biscuit Not that I am surprised one bit!

With summer just around the corner, the Dunolly and Talbot outdoor swimming pools will open, with free entry, for the outdoor pool season from Saturday 3rd December until Monday 13th March, 2023.
The Maryborough Sports and Leisure Centre will extend its opening hours and remain open until 7pm on weekends and public holidays. Weekday opening hours will remain as normal. Plus, the Maryborough Sports and Leisure Centre will also offer reduced fees for casual entry during the outdoor pool season Season passes will remain as normal. Thanks to the Victorian Government’s FReeZa program, free single-entry pool passes to the Maryborough Sports and Leisure Centre indoor pool will be provided to youth under the ages of 25. The vouchers are being distributed via our locals schools this week. Vouchers will also be available at Council’s Customer Service Centre. Unfortunately, as announced in July this year, the heritage listed Maryborough Outdoor Pool won’t be opening this summer To ensure our local community and visitors to our Shire still have access to aquatic facilities during the summer, Council has worked closely with Unified Leisure to implement a range of swimming options for the community: The Olympic pool is more than 80 years old and for safety and structural reasons the pool cannot be re opened until it is demolished and rebuilt This will be a significant project at considerable cost and we will continue to advocate to State and Federal Governments for funding.
To find out more about where you can swim this summer and for more information on the future of the Maryborough Outdoor Pool visit: www engage cgoldshire.vic.gov au/ maryboroughoutdoorpool
Central Goldfields Shire Mayor Cr Grace La Vella encouraged community members to take advantage of free entry at the Talbot and Dunolly outdoor pools and the extended opening hours at the Maryborough Sports and Leisure Centre this summer
“Our pools are fantastic assets for the community. They provide a perfect social hub for our children, parents, families and friends. We understand that the closure of the Maryborough Outdoor Pool will cause inconvenience and disappointment to our local community We know the facility is much loved by our local residents and the wider community”.
“The reality is that the pool is more than 80 years old and we must ensure the pool is safe for our community to use. We’ll continue to advocate tirelessly to State and Federal governments for the $6 million we need to rebuild this heritage listed, recreation and sporting icon so as to ensure it can be enjoyed by future generations.”
**Please note the Talbot and Dunolly outdoor pools only open when the weather is 25 plus degrees.

Dunolly Community Garden
Now that the weather is starting to warm up, winter vegetables are beginning to die back. We have already harvested our garlic, saving the best heads for next year's planting and putting the excess on the share table.
We have pulled down our pea vines and saved seed from those that grew with the most vigour. Planting of the summer crops has begun, the weather caught us by surprise and we seem to have lost most of the zucchini plants, but our tomato plants are coming along nicely
fruit fly too, which was a major problem in our area last year
Earlier in the year we had a fruit fly expert come to the garden and show us how to identify the pest and the best ways to control them The pests will already be hatching and starting to lay their eggs in fruit. We have made quite a few simple cheap effective fruit fly traps and these are available for free from the community garden. We meet at the community garden in the

The Secret Life of coins
Coins are becoming a rarity and finding them in your purse or pocket is harder these days. You can see if coins have been kept by someone as a collection, bright and pristine despite the date minted, or very sad and grubby if used frequently Brushing with toothpaste will restore them to former glory Small change usually has a rough life, tossed into small bowls, ash trays and bottles and put aside until collected for a quick trip to the milk bar or fish and chip shop. Previously having been doled out as pocket money, now probably folding money is needed to meet demands.
My interest in coins was rekindled when our Queen Elizabeth II passed away this year Seeing her likeness stamped on the coin is something we have known all our lives. I have found some coins with the 2022 date on them and hope to put them aside as my own collection. I was surprised to hear the Mint had already produced the coins for 2023, bearing the Queen’s image, which now won’t be used.
If you read the date and imprint on each coin, it recounts a history or commemoration of important events. On the head side, the image changed as the Queen aged in her portrait, but still a profile with a crown, and all-important minted date The tail side particularly on the 50 cent coin, has shown the
march of time, depicting subjects such as the Silver Jubilee, World War dates, historical figures and landmarks (the Sydney Opera House, Windmills and Merino sheep). The $1 and $2 coins have also had significant artwork on them.
I recently sent away to the Mint to purchase the 50 cent coin commemorating 75 years of the Australian Signals Directorate 1947 2022 The artwork on it contained a secret code which was solved by a 14 year old the next week! My interest in this was that it coincided with my significant birthday and made a great memento
A new era will transpire with the coronation of King Charles III and our new coinage will emerge to follow tradition, unless of course we become a Republic!

Mowing update
As one of the wettest years on record in Victoria, the saturated ground conditions have made it difficult for Council to keep on top of growth along our roadsides and reserves.
For Council to manage the growth along our roadsides and reserves, over the coming weeks we’ll be using internal and external contractor crews.
The good news is that our roadside slashing program has commenced in Carisbrook this week They will do the main roads heading north before moving to all areas in a southerly direction. We’ll provide regular updates as crews move across our Shire

Councillor Liesbeth Long
On Friday I attended the Zonta Club of Central Goldfields’ 16 Days of Activism at Zonta’s “R” for RESPECT Flowerbed in PhillipsGardens
The 16 Days of Activism against Gender Based Violence is an annual campaign that begins on 25th November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and runs through to the International g ay on 10th December.
Led by civil society, the campaign is supported by the United Nations who state that violence against women and girls remains the most widespread and pervasive human rights violation worldwide affecting more than 1 in 3 women, a figure that has remained unchanged over the last decade.
This year’s theme is “UNITE! Activism to end violence against women and girls” which invites everyone to be an activist in preventing violence against women and girls through taking a stand publicly, wearing the colour orange, engaging in activities and events to raise awareness in their local communities, joining women’s rights movements and activists.
In many ways the recent pandemic has made the 16 Days of Activism campaign even more important than before. According to the latest statistics from 2021, the COVID 19 pandemic intensified all forms of violence against women and girls:
∑ 45% of women reported that they or a woman they know has experienced a form of violence against women and girls.
∑
Seven in 10 women said they think that verbal or physical abuse by a partner has become more common.
∑
Six in 10 felt that sexual harassment in public spaces has worsened.
So what can you do and how do you get involved?
You can attend an activity to help raise awareness. There are some interesting things planned, see flyer. How did these activities come about? Well, Central Goldfields Shire Council is a member of the Victoria Police Neighbourhood Policing Local Safety Committee (NHP LSC)
The LSC comprises representatives from Women’s Health Loddon Mallee, MDHS, The Orange Door, Council, Various community groups, community services and schools
The LSC has determined that family violence underpins almost every safety and social issue in Central Goldfields and have committed to making a difference A survey was conducted across organisations to explore the problem from different lenses.
This data was themed, and actions emerged The actions were further explored and split into 16 days of activities designed for a variety of audiences using different modes. Well done to all for putting this together
Together we can make a difference, I whole heartedly believe this.
You can join the 16 Days of Activism activities across the Central Goldfields to view the full event program visit: www centralgoldfields.vic.gov au/16days2022

Stories from Cynthia
Thespis
What fun we all had in the Dunolly Town Hall last Saturday afternoon when the Gilbert and Sullivan Society came to town to present Thespis, a littleknown Gilbert and Sullivan operetta.
Despite Rachel’s worries about attracting enough people to a less-familiar production, she was rewarded with a full house and a most enthusiastic audience they were, me included
It was a very entertaining and funny romp, titled The Gods Grown Old where the Planetary gods exchange roles with a group of actors discovered by the gods picnicking on Mount Olympus.
The cast sang beautifully, Rachel was a cast member this time and her superb voice raised the roof and sent shivers up your spine Geoffrey Urquhart provided the musical accompaniment, not just piano but occasional blasts on the horn. Many members of the cast were young and extremely talented vocally
To add to the friendly atmosphere, champagne, wine, tea and coffee were available before and at
Wildlife
After reading Vicky’s letter expressing appreciation for the positive feedback from her wildlife flower stories, I felt that I could very much engage with that, as I always feel most gratified when someone stops me in the street or in one of the cafes to tell me how much they enjoyed my mixed bag of stories I found particularly interesting and enlightening, Vicky’s previous articles on our wildlife creatures, the echidnas, possums and the worrying plight of mange spreading throughout the wombats. When I lived in St Andrews, wombats were regularly encountered crossing the road, like the kangaroos, only being much smaller, were often hit before they were seen.
Although St. Andrews was outside the normal habitat of koalas, one happened to stray on to our property I well remember the day because it was a Sunday, my often lie in morning and I use the term lie in rather than sleep in, because on many a Sunday morning I was known to be sitting up in bed reading the paper and having cups of tea served to me until quite late, sometimes receiving the occasional visitor who would perch on the end of the bed to chat. Therefore, when the kids rushed in to tell me there was a koala in our tree, I thought it was a ruse to get me out of bed, but it was the truth; not far from the house a plump koala was on a low branch of a gum tree having his breakfast. It would have been far from home so we thought that dogs may have chased it down from Kinglake, its normal habitat. The kids spread flour around the tree and then left it to go home without being disturbed by spectators, thinking they could trace its route, but they couldn’t discover which direction our visitor had taken
interval, plus Jan’s amazing delicacies, mouth watering biscuits and cream meringues
I spoke to a couple after the show, their first time in Dunolly; they were very excited about the performance and asked me when they could expect the next show
This theatrical event was produced by the Dunolly Gilbert & Sullivan Society in partnership with the Community Bank Maldon & District
Since then, I have met up with a few koalas, one not so long ago at Bromley and the man in the house nearby came over to tell me it was a regular visitor. Koalas also live and are often seen on the property my stepson owned near Broadford, on the road to Mount Disappointment. I was once almost attacked by a possum when it came down our chimney and let me know, don’t come any closer I didn’t
My favourite Vicky wildlife story was the one on the echidnas; I learned some interesting facts about echidnas from that one
One member of our Australian wildlife that I do miss is the kookaburra In St Andrews, they used to sit on our decking rail, even bringing their young and I never tired of listening to them laughing their heads off high up in the trees.
The only kooka I ever hear now is when I am listening to Macca on a Sunday morning.

With the State Election completed (several seats to be finalised), we can confidently say that the Labor Party will retain control in Victoria. We congratulate all those who won or retained seats and thank those who have lost their seats and others who ran for election.
This result means much, as Flynn Ward and other Wards in the Central Goldfields Shire have funding promises toward projects, based on the re election of Labor
With the present situation our Shire is in, its performance in relation to the rest of the state or country, we need to turn our thoughts toward the next Council election With the target of completely changing the trend of our Shire being one of the lowest ranked shires, currently we are slightly increasing on a few areas, yet we are still well below where we were four years ago. This target can be set into place with we, the community, working to obtain transparency, good management, efficiency and assisting the Council in gaining the trust of the community
With the recent rain, especially in Dunolly, there have been several premises (both commercial and residential) which have repeatedly received water damage from heavy rain, waterways not being kept clear, possible damaged roads or incorrect levels.
Last Council meeting, it was stated that: “The sealed road asset is considered as two separate assets the road pavement and the sealed surface The sealed surface typically has a 15 year life span, whilst the pavement lasts 45 to 60 years, depending on stable ground conditions.” 'Depending on stable ground conditions', and 'typically', are not confident words.
Look at the new surface on the Pleasant St, Carisbrook surface, which was laid just over twelve months ago; now it is all but eroded in places. Should Council have a weather clause placed in their 15 year or 45 to 60 years allocation?
The parks have been the flagship of the present Satisfaction Survey score, since our customer service ratings have dropped drastically Does it now appear our parks are not receiving the upkeep they have previously received? Will this be the next drop in ratings?
We encourage all community members who have concerns around their area, to please inform Council, and to keep them well in the loop as to present concerns Be part of our recovery and make the next score increase
Look after each other and thank you
