Remembrance Day in Dunolly
Even though the weather was teasing us, the Dunolly/Bealiba RSL President Rick Gale welcomed everyone. He gave a short reading on the purpose of the Remembrance Service, then Pastor Miriam Darlow gave the prayer “Psalm 23” and a small reading, followed by Councillor Liesbeth Long’s
story and poem “In Flanders’ Fields” The Dunolly school children are so much appreciated for helping to keep the remembrance of the sacrifices made by so many Australians in order to keep us a free country; the little poem they read was very moving Thank you to the children and teachers for your help.

Remembrance Day
The red poppy such a si flower which says so much red poppy is a sy of Remembrance and of hope a positive future and a peace world
On the 11th hour on the 11th of the 11th month, a minu silence is observed and dedicated to those soldiers who died fighting to protect the nation Why is this day special to Australians?
In 1997, Governor General Sir William Deane issued a proclamation formally declaring 11th November to be Remembrance Day, urging all Australians to observe one minute silence at 11am on 11th November each year, to remember those who died or suffered for Australia's cause in all wars and armed conflicts.
On 11th November at 11am, in Dunolly, we paused to remember all of the men and women of the Australian Defence Force who have made the ultimate sacrifice
We will remember them. Lest we forget.

St . Mary's Church Anniversary
Fifty years ago, or fifty one to be precise, a large crowd gathered at St Mary's Church Dunolly, to celebrate the centenary of the opening of the church. The 150th anniversary should have been last year, but Covid restrictions put paid to that.
The celebration will be on Sunday, 27th November, 2022 at St Mary’s, beginning with Mass at noon Bishop Paul Bird, Bishop of Ballarat will be saying Mass. Father John and the congregation invite you to help us celebrate.
We may be able to get near to the hundred plus people who attended 50 years ago There is a photo of this gathering which will be on display in the church. Have a look to see if you can find yourself or someone you know.
The celebrations will continue with a picnic in the Gordon Gardens There are several places in town that do take away or else bring your sandwiches and thermos

Jungle Growth
This is not a criticism, just a comment. After all that heavy rain, everything has started to shoot up and spread out and has got completely out of control My garden has almost engulfed me and I can barely squeeze through the shrubbery to get to the side gate.
I feel very sympathetic for the Council employees whose task it is to cut grass and clear public land. An example of this is at the corner when you are approaching the Avoca Road from the Timor Road
The grass is so long on the corner, it is impossible to see any traffic when turning right towards Dunolly, and that is just a small example of how dense the growth is everywhere.
We need huge robotic slashers to take over, otherwise an enormous working bee of every ablebodied Dunolly resident. Not serious in last

The Welcome Record Wednesday 16th November 2022 Page 7
Last Friday I was humbled to be asked to speak at the RSL Remembrance Day service in Dunolly.
I was born in the Netherlands and as such I did not grow up with the Anzac heritage that was still displayed so proudly on the 11th. This does not mean, however, that I don’t have a deep respect and appreciation for what the Anzac legacy means and stands for
In July 2019 my husband Andrew and I travelled in Europe for 6 weeks. During that time we decided to visit Villers-Bretonneux which was the site of a huge allied battle during the first World War. Following the war, schoolchildren in Victoria helped raise the funds to rebuild the village school that was destroyed during the battle. The special relationship between the people of Villers Bretonneux and Australia was highlighted once again after the 2009 Black Saturday bushfires in Victoria. On learning of the destruction of the local Strathewen Primary School, the people of Villers Bretonneux raised funds towards rebuilding the school This gesture, nearly a century on from the Battle of Villers-Bretonneux, is testament to the enduring bonds between two great allies. We caught the train from Paris to Amiens and then a short connection to Villers Bretonneux I had hired us an Air BNB for a couple of nights and we walked there from the station.
It was incredible to see the references to Australia everywhere, on street signs, restaurants, pubs and Australian themed murals on building walls. We passed the Primary School and above the playground quadrangle there was a huge sign proclaiming “Never Forget Australia.”
The next day, we walked to the Sir John Monash Centre, which is set on the grounds of the VillersBretonneux Military Cemetery in northern France, and adjacent to the Australian National Memorial (see photo) It tells Australia’s story of the Western Front in the words of those who served It was a stunning day with a blue sky and rolling hills as far as the eye could see But there was also a
sombre feeling in the air and we were quiet the whole time as we contemplated what had happened here so many decades before.
We were both incredibly moved by the immersive experience and it gave us a better understanding of the journey of ordinary Australians which was told in their own voices through letters, diaries, videos, audio and life size images To be able to connect with the places they fought and died left us with a lasting impression.
If you are ever in Europe, a visit to Villers Bretonneux is an absolute must!

Our roads, like many roads across the state, have been hard hit by the recent flood events. Full restoration works on our road, bridge and drainage network will be a long term challenge. It’s going to take time and will require extensive funding through Victorian Government recovery funding streams

Act now to start your nursing career in Maryborough
Are you thinking of starting a nursing career? As we rapidly approach the end of the year it’s time to lock in your next step
If you’re leaving school or thinking about returning to study, Maryborough District Health Service (MDHS) is offering you the chance to train to be an enrolled nurse in a supported, hands on learning environment in Maryborough
Applications for the Diploma of Nursing, run onsite at Maryborough, in partnership with Bendigo TAFE (RTO no 3077) are now open
The 2023 intake at Maryborough District Health Service will start on Monday 13th February but you need to act now to meet course entry requirements. Join an upcoming information session to find out more and take the pre entry test. Information sessions will be held in the Centre of Inspired Learning (COIL) Classroom at Maryborough District Health Service on Wednesday 16th November, Tuesday 29th November and Friday 13th January 2023.
The Diploma of Nursing (HLT54121) course runs over two years, three days a week on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday It is the perfect chance to study and learn new skills in the healthcare sector According to Sarah Broad, Operations Manager of Organisational Development at MDHS, there are many benefits to being able to live, work and train locally.
“The TAFE course run at Maryborough offers the benefits of being able to learn and study locally with experienced nurses and educators in our community,” said Mrs Broad.
“We often hear from students that the experience gained from learning in a small to medium sized health service means they get more breadth and exposure to different clinical scenarios.
“You also get to be part of a fun and amazing team, while helping to connect our community to great person centred healthcare.
“At MDHS we encourage a culture of life long learning and are committed to working with our team to develop flexible and tailored long term career opportunities so it’s a great place to start your journey,” she said.
Bendigo TAFE CEO Sally Curtain said Bendigo TAFE is proud to partner with MDHS to provide its students with the skills and training for jobs of the future.
"Our 2 year nursing diploma means our students can get into the workforce quicker and then work in their last two years if they choose to complete their bachelor’s degree to become a registered nurse.
“Nursing is a rewarding career with high job prospects for students when they complete their
study, while also supporting the most vulnerable members of our community,” Ms Curtain said Bendigo TAFE student Tiarne Gale said she loves the convenience of being able to train as a nurse, just a 10 minute drive away from home.
Tiarne is in her second and final year of studying the Diploma of Nursing at Maryborough District Health Service through Bendigo TAFE.
“Learning here at MDHS has been a very positive experience for me,” said Ms Gale.
“
I’ve made many friends and built many relationships. I find the teachers very welcoming and knowledgeable, and have a massive respect for everything nurses do.
“
We’ve learnt a lot of skills such as caring for the elderly, slide sheets, basic life support, IVs and taking blood it’s harder than it looks.
“
It’s like one big family here, and I really like that when you come in you don’t feel intimidated
“
It’s very inclusive and a great learning environment, where you get a lot of one on one attention to develop your skills,’ she said.

Adventures of Waistcoat W illy
It's time to please all Waistcoat Willy's followers and catch up on some of his many life experiences. This time Billy is on home ground and Rosa has suggested the idea of applying to be contestants on the TV programme Deal or No Deal, a once popular guessing game, now no longer airing.
In true Billy form, he decided to ride down to Melbourne on the motorbike, with Rosa as pillion passenger Arriving at the South Melbourne studios, they were ushered into a big room containing at least one hundred people.
There were about ten interview stations and the interviewer asked their occupations and then asked Billy what had he done in his life What a question for a man with Billy's past life experiences and hairraising adventures! Where would he start?
Billy recounted a few of his many seafaring incidents and the man was amazed at what he heard. He asked Billy whether he would definitely go on the show should he be picked and Billy assured him that he would very much like to accept
Three months passed and then a message arrived to invite Billy and Rosa to attend the TV studios to appear on the show When they arrived, they were given name tags and numbers and were told they would be in Number Two section
Firstly, they were taken to makeup, where Billy had powder brushed on his face and his hat cleaned and then they were ready. A contestant in the first section finished up winning only a dollar and then Billy and Rosa were called up
During the ad break, Billy overheard the man who had interviewed him at the audition say to one of the staff, "If he ever writes a book, I'm going to read it." Pity it wasn't now, because I had a book featuring a selection of Billy's exciting stories printed, which I gave to him last Christmas. Back to the studio. Before Billy went on, Rosa told him to pick number 8, but he said he was going to pick 16 and, believe it or not, number 8 had the $200,000 and Billy had stuck to 16, however he did win $13,000. I can't help wondering what comment Rosa might have made over Billy's choice. Afterwards he was asked whether he would like to choose a box for double or nothing, meaning he either won $26,000 or nothing, and a girl brought out the two boxes. Billy decided he didn't want to take the risk, as he was happy with his prize, but secretly wondered if both boxes held the money, however he would never find that out
As with all money prize shows, winners never receive their cash until the show is aired, in case it might be cancelled That didn't happen to Billy and Rosa however, and they were more than content with their prize money
When the show did come to air, Billy and Rosa invited a few friends for dinner, me included I was the only one who hadn't seen the show and had no idea how the result had turned out No one was allowed to give it away, so here I was calling out
when a generous offer came up, "Take it Billy, take it," and everyone else was just grinning
While in Melbourne, Billy and Rosa decided to visit the grandchildren, and when they arrived, they were surprised to see a big gas bottle out the front. It turned out that the family were blowing up balloons for a party at the children's school Billy and Rosa joined in to help and they all did a lot of pumping until there was a very large number of balloons in a huge cluster "Oh dear", said someone, “how are we going to get them to the school; they won't fit in the car? We should have pumped them up when we got there!" Intrepid Billy to the rescue said he would take them on his bike, as it was only a short distance away So, they tied all the balloons together and the children's father climbed on with him to hang on to the balloons. Billy was going too fast however and his passenger called out to slow down, as he thought he was about to take off and float off to the sky What a lovely sight that would have been for the schoolchildren. Billy wasn't scared about being pulled over because his companion was a policeman. When they arrived, they were greeted by a crowd, all cheering and clapping You can always expect the unexpected when Waistcoat Willie is around!

E-Toll and SMS Scams
We are looking at E toll, WhatsApp and SMS scams. How Do they work you ask? Scammers send an SMS claiming to be someone they’re not, using either kind words or alarming one’s such as:
“Hi mum, my phone’s broken, can you send me some money?” or “UNPAID BILL”: You will be charged $$$ if you do not follow this link.
The important thing is to think things through rationally and calmly before acting on the SMS you have received. If you receive an SMS from an unfamiliar number, don’t click on any links they send even if you have been dealing with that person/business recently eg: Bendigo Bank, Google, Microsoft or someone claiming to know you.
Ask yourself if you have done anything to receive these messages, have you recently set up online banking? Are you currently trying to log into your email and are expecting a verification? Would someone you know send you a link from an unfamiliar number out of the blue? Being vigilant is key to not being scammed.
The E-Toll Scam
Scammers pose as toll road operators to trick people into handing over their personal information. It will start with a message claiming to be from road toll operators like Linkt and may ask you to pay an unpaid toll or update your account details for your E tag. Do not click the link. The attached link will likely take you to a convincing website that may look legitimate When in doubt, check your bill, phone book or jump online and find the correct number and website and contact them direct.
The ‘Hi Mum’ Scam
This scam tries to get you to disclose personal information by pretending to be the recipients child and asking for money.
The scammer sends a message to the victim with something along the lines of “Hi Mum” before claiming to have broken or lost their phone
They can pose as the victims child with vague responses before eventually asking for money or personal information
The scammers try to trick recipients into clicking on the URL link in the message but you should never click on a suspicious URL link ABC News)
The scammer will often try to build a rapport with the victim before asking for money or personal details.
(ABC News)
How to protect yourself
Check to make sure the person you're messaging is indeed who they say they are. Start by calling the original number you have for that person or send them a message over social media or even an email.
And you can always ask a question only your person would know the answer to or make up a fake question to catch out a potential scammer so you could ask something such as: "How's the dog going?" , knowing they don't have a dog.
For example “Hey Sarah, can you send me a photo of your new tattoo?” or “Did you remember to get Strawberries from the store” this works better if you’re asking about something you know they dislike or can’t have.

The section for this particular review was H0206 which surrounds the Maryborough CBD. It was observed that the 2005 Study divided H0206 into 12 sectors, on the night, only eight of those twelve were mentioned. Five interested locals attended this meeting and it was a very good meeting, with lots of discussion
