Rosie’s Ramble
After a drought lasting about four days, we are back to the wet and cold again. We can only look forward to the rest of Spring I wonder if anyone (short of those who can solve a Rubik's cube in seconds) can get one of those small "handy" shopping bags back into the bag they came in. There are thousands of them in the country, roughly stuffed back into the little bag or just abandoned in the boot of the car.
I climbed a little way up the dam wall a very little way to see how much water had found its way into it. It is full to the brim, fuller than it has been since the big flood. A pure white duck with a bright yellow bill was floating all alone on the water, not making any ripples. It was lovely and of course, the camera was in the house.
Have you seen the TV ad where a man burns his mouth on a cheese toastie that was too hot? I burned my thumb on hot cheese while cutting up my fried sandwich. It hurt!
When I was shopping on Sunday which is a great day for it, not so many people around I could not help but notice that there must have been an older car meeting in town. There were many beautiful shiny vehicles that seemed to be doing very careful laps of the town. When I got back to Dunolly there didn't seem to be a parking place on Broadway There were a few older cars there too I even saw a Morris Minor (very old) in the street
The couple of good days brought out half the motor mowers in Dunolly over the weekend by the noise going on
Joke Book
A man and his small daughter were in an overcrowded lift Suddenly a lady turned around, slapped the man and left in a huff The little girl remarked "I didn't like her either, Daddy. She stood on my foot, so I pinched her"

Central Goldfields Shire Council News Mayoral Column
We are now heading towards the Victorian state election which will be held on Saturday 26th November 2022.
In coming weeks we can expect the level of debate between the parties and independents to intensify as they all seek one thing your vote.
All councils are facing the challenge of trying to provide the services our communities want and need, but which is getting more challenging as rate capping bites in and is set less than the actual cost of providing the services needed, including local roads which have been punished by heavy winter rains.
We are successful in seeking grants and that makes a real difference. We continue to work with other councils to try and find a better funding model which the Government will accept.
We also work together to deliver greater efficiencies at less cost Critically though, we need to grow our population and local economy
With the right investment in our Priority Projects Plan initiatives we are well positioned to do that and create all the extensive benefits and service resulting.
The investments needed include better telecommunications and digital connectivity, added rail services, the further development of the gold interpretation at Maryborough Railway Station to make it a global destination as World Heritage Listing takes place, sewerage for Talbot, housing facilitation and much needed investment into our heritage assets including recreation facilities.
Ripon is the most marginal seat in Victoria. Shire residents should expect some clear commitments on these issues.
Don’t underestimate the power of your vote.

Dunolly Op Shop news
Summer clothing will hit our racks Thursday 29th! Thank you for your great support of our Winter Stock Clearance.
Many, many bags left the Op Shop along with their happy customers. Any winter clothes which remain, will still be for sale at very heavily reduced prices. So look for our special price tags on these super bargains.
Warmer days help us all to think about the need for lighter, cooler garments. Sadly, we even need to think about those skin damaging sun’s rays. The grandchildren were hunting round looking for sun screen last week for their holiday bike rides
Many of our customers need to buy light summer shirts and tops for their gardening and other outdoor activities. Hats and caps are also here at the Op Shop. Head wear has another use at the moment, alongside keeping the face sun protected Have your local magpies started swooping?
The coming of October gets folk looking at their whole wardrobe. Op Shop welcomes those garments which have sat in the wardrobe for the whole of the cooler months and never seen the light of day. Wardrobes have another shady happening Wardrobes shrink garments!
If you find your wardrobe has done this to last season’s summer garments then those clothes will also be most welcome at the Op Shop. Bring them along and buy some new clothing items which are a comfortable fit

Dunolly Museum – Tour to Norwood
John Tully’s twice yearly tours are always eagerly awaited by many, with this latest one being no exception
Around 40 people gathered outside the Museum and followed John in their cars to visit the historic homestead “Norwood.”
The property is in fairly close proximity to Dunolly, but as it was a private home, the exact location was not officially disclosed prior to the visit Norwood was built prior to the Gold Rush, but there had earlier been another dwelling on the site The exterior of the beautifully restored homestead, extensive gardens and grounds which included a croquet lawn, together with the amazing outbuildings, gave everyone much to drool over. The adjacent Bet Bet Creek was flowing strongly after all the recent rain, with a swirling cascade over the site of the former weir Timbers from the earlier bridge could still be seen in and on the edge of the water
Thanks as always to John for a most informative tour and also to Glenn Braybrook, who had personal knowledge of the property, having worked there about twelve years ago. Glenn related in detail, his memories of the building of the machinery shed, stables and other outbuildings. It is certainly a credit to him and the others who carried out this work, as the buildings look like they have been there since the house itself was built!
After leaving Norwood, we all gathered at Timor Creek Streamside Reserve for lunch The major part of the group then headed off elsewhere, but unfortunately I was not up for any more walking that day! By all accounts, everyone had a fabulous time, with many still reflecting on their memorable visit to “Norwood.”

Dunolly CWA 75th Birthday
Continued from the front page
On September 21st, the CWA Dunolly Branch celebrated our 75th branch birthday. There was a good number of visitors from other branches and several ex members present
After the welcome, Faye presented an interesting potted history of the branch including some old photos and other memorabilia.
Then the afternoon’s entertainment began with eight members (including our own Colleen) of the Maryborough Belly Dancers doing their thing This included some very graceful dancing and the tinkle of the little bells on their colourful costumes. One has to be pretty fit for this activity Thank you, ladies!
Next up was the Ukulele band with local players and singers This was a lot of fun and included some enthusiastic community singing from the audience. Again, thanks to the players for an extended session.
All this fun was followed (of course) by the cutting of the birthday cake by the branch president and a tasty afternoon tea. It was a most enjoyable celebration Many Thanks go to the visitors, entertainers and branch members.

Stories from Cynthia
After describing my recent visit to Melbourne and highlighting all the changes in Melbourne’s night life, it is only fair to draw attention to all the pleasures and delights of Melbourne by day
After reading this story, a good friend of mine who lives in Melbourne sent me an email pointing out the reverse side of the coin, so I will quote some of the things she wrote about First she pointed out how much the international flavour had brightened up the social scene with the influx of overseas students and Asian families coming here; thus spicing up our traditional eateries with their own cultural style of cooking and the many languages heard around the city.
Then there is the river scape, looking down at the Yarra from the bridge on Swanston Street seeing the bars and restaurants at Southbank with their river views, the water ferries travelling down to Docklands Last Christmas I wrote about a river cruise down the Yarra as part of my birthday celebration and this Melbourne friend was one of the party It was such an eye opener to see how much use people had made of the Yarra in the past years, with floating restaurants and fun parks on the banks.
My friend also reminded me of the street musicians, often known as buskers, in the Bourke Street Mall, many of them quite professional. There are the lovely arcades between Bourke and Collins Streets, with the famous Gog and Magog in Royal Arcade and the exquisitely fashionable Block Court, where that fabulous cake shop /café still exists and where I ate Strawberry and cream sponge cake with my mother when I was twelve.
When my friend visits the city at night for dinner or a show she told me that she travels happily home by train because she feels safe with the PSOs (Safety Patrols) patrolling public transport late at night
Another aspect which reminded me of bygone days was the beautifully designed Her Majesty’s Theatre where we went to see the show ‘Hamilton’ last weekend. It is just the same as I first remembered it when taken to see a pantomime by my mother when I was a child. The extravagant art deco style
features gilded edged boxes and wall features, with geometric shaped lights and the wall friezes depict classic themes It has the third upstairs gallery, above the dress circle, which used to be referred to in most old theatres as the gods I read once that the writer Charles Lamb and his sister Mary used to pool their money to afford to go up in the gods and sit on hard benches to see a play Then when he was successful and could afford the best seats he never felt as much pleasure as when he was up in the gods. Her Majesty’s is very old, built in 1839 but the present décor was refurbished in the 1930s. Another theatre, this time a picture theatre (now known as a cinema) which is long gone, was the old State theatre in Flinders Street It was magic to a child’s eyes because when the lights went down the ceiling turned dark blue and was dotted with sparkling stars and the silhouettes of mediaeval towers. I can still see it now.
The Sisterhood
Over the last two years we have all experienced sadness. As my siblings have aged, the things we should expect in life when they happen are a shock. After a short spell in Care, I lost my eldest sister Jessica and her husband It should have been looked at as a blessing (due to ill health) but if reflecting the ‘sisterhood’ group as a boat, Jessica, was our ‘Bow’ steaming ahead, organising and planning the way and our lives.
As she and my second sister Eva were close in age, finally to give her son’s peace of mind Eva also went into a Care home, which resembles a resort
The ‘Engine’ in our ‘sisterhood boat’ , Eva is hardworking and practical until retirement! She then blossomed into a butterfly, soaring and soaking up the arts and travel
I must admit it was a bit scary to reflect on my ‘Sisterhood‘ connection I have floated through life so probably, I am the ‘Life buoy’ being a carer, a home body, a doer. Taking pleasure in the simple things in life and being in my age bracket, I came to the conclusion that I have five good years left!
Sister number four has a heart of gold. Margaret is much travelled, very family orientated and a committed book worm But I wouldn’t rely on her to steer our ‘sisterhood’ boat one could end up anywhere, which would be fun!
Being the youngest is never easy I’m told. Kath has struggled all her life to be the ‘Captain’ of our boat, if only someone would listen!
She is an achiever, pushing boundaries and wanting the medals to prove it.
In conclusion it may be a miracle we are all still talking, can forgive each other and have a bond like no other, of ‘Sisterhood’ over our lifetime.

Get Counting! October 17th ‒ 23rd is the 9th Aussie Bird Count! During the week, join thousands of people around the country in observing and counting the birds that live near you in your garden, a local park, the beach or in the middle of town!
It’s a great way to connect with nature while helping BirdLife Australia learn more about the birds that live where people live ‒ and there are some incredible prizes on offer!
The Aussie Bird Count is an activity for all ages that involves observing and counting the birds that live near you By telling us about the birds you’ve seen within a 20 minute period, you will help BirdLife Australia develop an understanding of local birds, whilst getting to know the wildlife on your doorstep! BirdLife Australia is the nation’s largest bird conservation organisation As an independent charity, our purpose is to stop extinctions. We have run the Aussie Bird Count since 2014, alongside our range of different programs, with the aim of protecting Australia’s birds.
To complete the Aussie Bird Count, spend 20 minutes standing or sitting in one spot and noting down the birds that you see You will need to count the number of each species you spot within the 20 minute period If you can identify birds by their calls, please include these in your count
The Aussie Bird Count app has a handy field guide to help you identify birds Once you have completed your count, you can submit it in two different ways: You can submit your bird count through the online web form (this form won’t be made live until the 14 October) OR You can submit your counts through the free Aussie Bird Count app.
The app is available for iPhones and Android smartphones, go to the Google Play or iTunes to download the app for free.

It was a huge success with cars and motorbikes arriving at Ned’s Shed from the surrounding region All in all, about 40 mixed gleaming vehicles and bikes were showcased. The weather was picture perfect which was so welcoming after all the rain
The club has grown from strength to strength with the membership now reaching 60+ and it will be 100 in no time We are all very proud of the comradeship and social connection it has created This has been marvellous for Dunolly because there are so many like minded vehicle owners and enthusiasts in the area Pictured Ned Callow

Annual Budget and Performance report time. In September 2021, our CEO tabled Item 8.8 Certification of Financial and Performance Statements 2020 21 for in principle approval
Later the 2020 21 Annual Report was presented, ten pages shorter than the (usual) previous Annual Reports CGR&RAI went through the ten page short Annual Report and found many omissions from previous years.
As the omissions were not mainly financial and performance-based information, the Auditor General was mainly only concerned with the financial report. So CGR&RAI decided to investigate the State Government site https://knowyourcouncil vic.gov au/ which uses the Council's own Annual and Performance reports for data, then presents key items on their site. We began placing those reports in an album on our Facebook site https:// wwwfacebook.com/media/set/? set=a 1083937332459493&type=3
This album was extremely well received by the community This led to Council publishing an Erratum in Feb 2022, which brought the 2020 21 report into alignment with previous years' reports and the Annual report requirements. Council then requested Know Your Council to adjust specific figures which had been presented in the ten-page short 2020 21 Annual report (which we raised as concerns) and use the figures placed in the Erratum of the 2020 21 report Know Your Council would not alter the figures. CGR&RAI then looked into the Erratum and realized that Council has placed the date 2021 22 in there and not the period 2020 21. So basically this was a medley of errors, to which we believe the community was oblivious, and we are sure Council will not tell you about this error. These issues raised are all in known minutes, submissions or reports, so all can be validated Now we look at the real 2021-22 report, tabled at the 27th September 2022 meeting.
8.1 Annual Financial and Performance Statements 2021 2022, to seek in principle approval for the Statements and authorise two Councillors on behalf of Council to certify the Statements in their final form
This report is (as of 24th September 2022) 69 pages in length, with the issues missing from last year's ten page short report, plus many more items, also appearing to be missing We believe this report is still in draft stage, and hope that Council or the Auditor General do not lead us down the same path
as last year's Annual and Performance report did. Fingers crossed for that.
One question we ask, is why the community is not invited to submit to the Annual and Performance, when it appears Council could use some valuable assistance?
After three consecutive years of increased percentage of staff turnover (this year 21%), we notice that Council also has (in last Tuesday's Council meeting Item 8.3) a policy named 'Recruitment and Retention of Staff in the Shire' This report is aimed at local businesses and companies re staff concerns. Thank you to all community members who were selected to participate in this project We were pleased to see this, and we wish every success for it We now ask at what stage will our Councillors and executive staff show the same consideration to their/our Shire staff?
When continuous turnover is present, production, the efficiency, confidence and trust diminishes. With three years of bordering on 20% staff turnover, we wonder when this recycling will stop Our Council and Councillors have a duty of care to our/their employees to provide a safe, professional and non toxic workplace. CGR&RAI encourages Council and Councillors to act on this immediately We respect and appreciate our Shire employees; you all do a fantastic job CGR&RAI asks that Councillors and executive staff demonstrate their respect for the staff, as well as providing that duty of care It will reward you and the Shire extremely well Our staff are the most valuable assets we have. On 4 October 2022, CGR&RAI will be holding a public meeting at 7pm at the Carisbrook Senior Citizens Hall, Urquhart Street, Carisbrook, to address community concerns around the still not completed western levee and mitigation work around Carisbrook. This meeting is open to the public and will follow our brief general meeting. All welcome to attend it is a free event and bookings are not required, just turn up At this meeting we will be discussing design, dates, and who made those decisions, and tabling the documents that we use for reference We invite Councillors and Council to be in attendance and to correct any information or data we present The main aim is that at the finish of this presentation, we will have a clear idea from start to finish of the complete process. Thank you and stay safe

Club Signings
Over the coming weeks, the DFNC Football department will be making some more exciting announcements of players re-signing and new signing's joining us for season 2023. What a way to get the ball rolling with these next two young lads. Joining the nest from North Bendigo FNC is an exciting young player in Zandyr Barilari (Choc). Zandyr is a great young talent, has a great footy brain, with a maturity well above his years and the skills to go with it.
Choc was the HDFL under 18's interleague captain and played 8 senior games as an 18 year old for a strong North Bendigo team this season, his speed and vertical leap are an upside to his game as well as his non stop engine
We are excited to see what this young gun brings to the DFNC for season 2023.
A few of the guys already know this next bloke having done a brief pre-season with us a few years ago joining the nest in 2023 is Tyler Barnett. Tyler is a young half forward/inside mid who brings a lot of value to the team with an engine and skills to match A running machine and handy basketballer off the pitch, we are excited to see what Tyler brings to the field for season 2023.
Having gotten across to a couple of our games this year, we are expecting Tyler to hit the ground running and welcome him and his family to the DFNC for season 2023
Welcome aboard guys!

W hispering Weeders Garden Club
On Monday morning only a couple of us set off for Lambleys Nursery in Ascot, between Clunes and Ballarat.
Once there, we encountered a little drizzly rain but we didn’t open our brollies at all The gardens are so lovely.
Thousands of spectacular tulips along with beautiful poppies and so many colourful shrubs. The white blossoms of the avenue of Manchurian Pear trees were gorgeous.
After maybe an hour and a half, with purchases made, we headed off to Clunes for some refreshments We went to Twankeys Cafe for what was a most enjoyable lunch
The Barista (among his other jobs) was James, a most colourful and lovely man He and all the staff were so nice and helpful We would be more than happy to go back there It was indeed a lovely day out.
Whispering Weeders garden club meets on the last Monday of the month If you would like to join, please contact Kath at the Dunolly Neighbourhood Centre on 5468 1511
