Tarnagulla is buzzing with behind the scenes activity, in preparation for this Sunday’s Strictly Vintage Fair The Southern Loddon Tourism Inc committee, together with many helpers, have come together to make this Fair an event to Comremembermercial Road, Soldiers Memorial Park and the Victoria Theatre will play host to the many activities, with displays of classic cars and retro caravans, including those from the Dunolly Vehicle Club, expecting to attract visitors from far and wide. Stalls showcasing vintage and artisan wares will line Commercial Road and one of the fun highlights of the day will be the interactive Vintage Fashion Parade at midday There will also be tours of the town available in a 1929 Oakland. Many are looking forward to seeing our own Queen Victoria, who will once again grace us with her presence; the sumptuous High Teas in the Victoria Theatre supper room from 11am, no doubt will once again prove to be a popular attraction

A young man had been courting a girl for some time and tried without success to get her to consent to marriage Finally he confided to her that his elderly father was quite sick and would die soon." When that happens I will be a millionaire " Two days later, she became his stepmother.

I was playing on my tablet the other day when a video came on It showed a mother duck with several ducklings playing hide and seek on a lake. The mother duck was diving under the water and popping up away from the babies When they spotted her they paddled like mad to her Then she would dive again. This went on for quite a while and was mesmerizing to watch. I wonder if this was the duck version of locking oneself in the toilet for a few minutes of peace from the kids.

I mentioned bees trying to get nectar from my bright blue garden gloves They were trying again when I noticed they had little bits of blue on their legs where they usually carry pollen. I hid the gloves as I don't fancy the bees taking plastic back to their hives . I have been grizzling a bit about the amount of rain we have lately Then I watched the floods in Pakistan I noticed a long jet trail way up in the sky stretching from horizon to horizon I have not seen one for ages just have not been outside at the right time I really enjoy playing Solitaire on the tablet, but I get cranky at myself when I play a "winnable" game and I don't .

Update on the Garden Art

Did you notice last week’s paper issue had the wrong date? I could say it was deliberate, or I was testing our readers, however it was an oversight and honesty is the best policy. I apologise for the confusion.

Following up from last week’s article on page 11 of the Whispering Weeders’ attempts at concrete art here are the progress results Starting from a sheet of plastic with a mound of sawdust, soil, a large leaf and hand mixed concrete, we created some bird feeders for the garden. Some even managed to make caterpillars from socks and condoms filled with Tconcreteheystill need to be sealed before putting out in the weather. Thank you Sue Clausen for your expert tuition and guidance. Now to learn how to make those delicious 5468 1054

The number of Australians living with dementia is close to half a million a number that is set to double in the next 25 years There are also an estimated 1.6 million people involved in their care. Many people living with dementia can continue to live well after their diagnosis, but often feel isolated because of the stigma and discrimination associated with dementia. That’s why the theme for Dementia Action Week 2022, 19th 25th September, is ‘A little support makes a big difference’ This year, we encourage communities to come together and learn more about how they can support people living with dementia. By everyone having a better understanding of dementia and seeing that a purposeful life can continue after diagnosis, we will eliminate discrimination and its impacts. There are seven small but practical ways you can make a difference in your community To find out more please visit https://discrimination dementia.org.au/ A little support can make a big difference.

Bro. Arthur Russell Crouch – 60 Year Jewel

Arthur’s father invented the Crouch Fishing Reel, which the family produced in the back yard of their Melbourne home. Owing to complaints from council in 1951 the family of father and mother and their three sons, moved to Dunolly and set up manufacturing in the building in Broadway used by W Bro.Reg Stephens for his Undertaker business At 20 years of age, Arthur was the youngest son, working with the family when they built and established the Crouch Fishing Reel Factory, employing several local Dunolly lads This business, like most industry in Dunolly, closed down or left town, so this building is now used as a AKindergarten.rthur, soon after arrival, met Fred Treble (who went on to be P S.G W and awarded an OAM) the proprietor of the local jewellery shop and he introduced Arthur to Freemasonry, the Dunolly Rifle Club and later on, they became involved with the formation of the Dunolly Brass Band (now defunct) Arthur was Initiated into St George Lodge on 28/07/1962 and raised on 26/10/1963 at a time when there was a waiting list to become a Steward of the Lodge. Arthur met Fred’s sister Kathleen, when she took up a role of nursing at Dunolly Hospital They got married in 1957, in the Anglican Church in Dunolly and built a house on the Bromley Road Without the move to Dunolly, Arthur might not have met Kathleen and the happy marriage would never have eventuated Arthur’s father lost a leg from a war wound that would not heal, so did not live to old age. After the death of their father in 1960, the older brothers moved back to Melbourne, but Arthur kept the factory going until 1969, when he also shifted back to Melbourne, going to work as an engineer. making yachting and sail equipment. Sadly, like much of our industry, cheaper imports made production in Australia unprofitable. However, the lasting interest in owning an original Crouch Fishing Reel proves the quality of the product manufactured in Dunolly.

Together Arthur and Kathleen had a son and a daughter, but his older brothers never married Having lost Kathleen, Arthur now 91, lives a quiet life in Aspendale Gardens with help from his daughter who lives nearby, but still maintains his interest and membership with St George Lodge No.18 of Dunolly The above photo is of the presentation of the 60 Year Jewel by V W Bro Ken Calder (Secretary No.18) holding an original Crouch Reel (which Arthur identified as a later model)Ken Calder

Page 12 The Welcome Record Wednesday 7th September 2022 Koalas Koalas are not usually seen around Dunolly, but people have said the have seen them when travelling to Ararat or Bendigo They are such an iconic Australian animal, that we al feel like we know them well, however they are not as cuddly as they seem

Years ago, while driving in the backblocks around Broadford on night, contemplating the stars and lif in general, the driver came to screeching halt. He jumped ou yelling "my little sister wants that!" W all looked blankly at each other thinking he had suddenly gone craz Then we heard a loud menacing growl close by. Colin came rushing back looking for blanket or something, but there was nothing Lucky for all of us! We final saw the koala he was wanting to catch, and it was very quick climbing a tree Colin was wanting to climb after it, but we talked him down, saying that anything which makes a noise like that would easily scratch your face off It is no wonder early settlers called them bears, when they have such a growl Time passed and I was at the zoo one day with my children, looking at the koala enclosure. A TV crew was filming for some show and asked us to move away to the other end We looked back and there was a popular presenter of the time, whose name now escapes me, holding a koala. From the size of it, I would say it was fairly young. It made no sound and seemed to be quite content.

Vicky Frizzell

I now wonder how much training goes into getting a few koalas friendly enough to allow celebrities such wonderful photo opportunities The amazing growl we all heard on the night Colin tried to catch a koala for his little sister, seems much more authentic.

imperial standard weights and the measures are now in the Colac Museum. The weights and measures were made by Potter of London and come in their own wooden boxes The weights go from ½ dram up to 56 lb. The ½ dram is a different weight and added to the collection in the 1950s The measures are from ½ gill to one gallon They have glass strike plates to ensure the container is full A dram is one sixteenth of an ounce. An ounce is one sixteenth of a pound. There are 28 pounds in a quarter and four quarters in a hundredweight. Thus the largest weight 56 pounds is about 25 kg. A gill is a quarter pint and there are eight pints in a gallon.

When the Weights & Measures Act was proclaimed in 1864 the responsibility that weights were correct were transferred to local government. All commercial traders needed their weights verified. One Dunolly councillor said he had regularly weighed his bread from the baker and it was underweight. Sets of standard weights and measures consisted of troy, avoirdupois (imperial), capacity (gills, pints and gallons) and length (one yard) cost £79/15/ This was an enormous amount for shires to pay So many local governments created unions In 1867 a union was formed between the Borough of Dunolly, Borough of Tarnagulla and Shire of Bet Bet. This way they could split the expense of purchasing the weights and measures and only have one weights and measures inspector. Thomas Costello was the first inspector. The Dunolly, Tarnagulla & Bet Bet stamp was a crown above VIC and E30

The sets of weights and measures were issued to the Dunolly, Tarnagulla and Bet Bet Union after the union was proclaimed on 22nd March 1867. These weights and measures were used to check those of shops, hotels and banks Also a government inspector would visit Dunolly and verify that their weights and measures were still correct. This inspector came to Dunolly in 1882, 1889, 1897 & 1903. The Dunolly, Tarnagulla and Bet Bet Union ceased on 12th August 1903 and the weights and measures were sent to storage at the Melbourne Observatory They were reissued in 1908 to the Shire of Hampden in the Western District. They were given the same number E30 and issued with the sets that had been in Dunolly In 1953 they went to the Corangamite Union and were restamped T44A.heDunolly/Hampden

Sadly, the Guides are no more. Then a shady looking character came in and after he left, Kevin warned us never to give him credit, as his excuse was always a hole in his hip pocket; later, we discovered that Kevin had been quite right. We had to learn the cash register, how to slice cold meat, the correct mark up for prices and so Ton.he motel owners, Barry and Val, also extended a warm welcome; they arranged a dinner for us at the motel to meet some of the locals, which was a great introduction to the town. We met the local policeman and a couple of local business owners and were made to feel really at home. It was nice to be able to ease into our environment so pleasantly and we were soon to discover the many events which regularly occurred in Dunolly

For our very first Gold Rush Festival, we dressed up, Mike with whiskers and a big apron and me in colonial dress. We won First Prize in the shop display contest with our miner, stuffed with paper, sitting by his camp fire (which was made with red cellophane), his gold pan containing two nuggets and his mining tools spread around. I still have the little engraved silver cup on the sitting room mantelpiece. And here I am still in Dunolly and although I had to sell the business after Mike died, Fiona, with the same surname, enhanced the place and kept the oldest existing liquor licence in Victoria still alive, just as Peter has done since he took over the premises

Page 16 The Welcome Record Wednesday 7th September 2022 Stories from Cynthia Back again to the past do I travel on my magic carpet to explore my little brain cells (courtesy of Poirot), to remember things that I have done I even surprise myself when I count the many places where I have worked and my many types of employment. If I were to list them, I would find that I have been a journalist writing children’s stories for a radio station, a lab mouse cleaner, a bursar at the Peter McCallum Cancer Clinic, a secretary, an advertising assistant at Coca Cola, including working extra hours in their factory adding up figures (to make ends meet when my husband ran away), assistant to the manager of Granny Davis Bread, an artist’s model, a barmaid in Cairns, co editor of a magazine, a High School English teacher and then a shop keeper, which became last on my list. Let me tell you about my transition into that last job, one which lasted twenty years and one I always enjoyed. After our children had grown up, we decided to sell my beloved mudbrick house in St. Andrews, built with my own blood, sweat and tears oh and my hands too and start a new and different life. I resigned from teaching and Mike was eligible to retire, as the Armed Services allow it after 20 years or the age of 40, and both milestones had arrived We took a break first, answering an ad in the teachers’ magazine for some housesitting while the owners were taking long service leave. They chose us and it proved to be wonderful, we had the run of the house, helping ourselves to everything in the bar and cupboards, replacing when leaving and the only proviso being to water the garden. That was a luxury for us, as we lived on tanks and grew natives, with no such thing as a hose or sprinkler. Then we started looking to buy a business; a pub, caravan park or general store, as we weren’t fussy After many inspections of all of these and weighing up the types of lifestyles, we found Newell’s Licensed Grocers

There was one other bidder who got there first, but we were in the fortunate position of being able to pay cash, so there we were, the new owners and residents of a lovely country town called Dunolly Kevin and Mary Newell were so friendly and helpful and we booked into the motel for a week to learn the business, being complete novices I remember that our first customer was Phyllis Shay wearing her Guides

I was born at St Vincent’s Hospital in Melbourne and Grant at Sunshine Hospital We met at an old time dance night in February 1969, when both of us were sixteen. Grant’s parents ran these nights, which were held in a hall owned by Massey Ferguson, where his father Norm worked My eldest sister Helen and her boyfriend Herbie, who she later married, had taken me to the dance. Two teenage boys were sitting at the door, with a man who was collecting the entrance fees; I did not know at that time who they were, but rather liked the look of one of them. I had no one to dance with and others were getting up to dance, so when Norm got up on stage to tell everyone what the next dances were, Herbie called out “Hey Norm, there is a young lady here wanting to dance with your son!” I must have gone a shade of scarlet red, as Norm yelled out over the mic, “Hey Grant, there is a young lady here who wants a dance, so get up here.” I was praying that it would be the one I fancied and thank God, it was Grant! This was the start of our many adventures together, some of which I will detail in further instalments after we return from our holiday in Cairns. Jenny Gamble

Be prepared, for swooping season Spring has sprung in the Central Goldfields, and with it comes warnings for swooping season Native birds including magpies and masked lapwings (plovers) may now begin swooping during their breeding season, and Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) senior wildlife projects officer Leila Brook said some native birds swoop to defend their eggs and young for the six to eight weeks until they leave the nest.

“Swooping can catch us by surprise, but it is normal behaviour for some territorial birds,” she said. “Swooping is basically a scare tactic to warn people and animals not to come near their nesting young. Birds may swoop people or animals, so be mindful of your dogs too.

To avoid being swooped, DELWP recommends: Know your local swooping hotspots Avoid the area if possible Move quickly, but do not run Cover your head with a hat, helmet or umbrella, but don’t wave it around Do not harass or feed birds. To find local swooping hot spots or to upload your own, you can visit Victoria’s Swooping Bird Map although at the time of publication on Thursday afternoon none had been added in the Central Goldfields Shire at www.wildlife.vic.gov au/managingwildlife/swooping birds It is illegal to harass or harm native birds and other wildlife without authorisation.

“However, not all birds swoop to protect their eggs and young during the breeding season, so don’t be concerned simply because there are magpies or other common swooping birds in the area. “During this time of year less than 10 percent of birds actually swoop and even fewer make contact. “If you are worried about being swooped, you can do a few things to protect yourself ”

What’s on Tarnagulla Strictly Vintage Fair

Upcoming events at Bendigo Gliding Club

As the freezing and wet winter days start to dwindle and we drift into Spring the gliding club is preparing itself for a busy soaring season. Membership of the club has grown significantly over the last year so the amount of gliders hangared has risen to around 40 This means more take offs and landings, but with the new cross strip and extra hangar space the club is well prepared for this We have some events approaching, the first being an Open Day on Sunday 9 October. The intention is to get the public out to Raywood to see the gliding operation in action, look at the static displays including a classic car display, perhaps pick up some leaflets and information and maybe grab a sausage from the sizzle Hopefully the weather will co operate and we can get a good turnout. After this we will be holding our usual annual Melbourne Cup long weekend activities which should go from Saturday 29th October through to Tuesday 1st November This often involves some members from other clubs around the state coming to visit to take advantage of the good central Victorian soaring conditions. Following this is our Christmas Camp, where, again we can expect visitors from other clubs to come and stay, usually for about a week, from Boxing TDayotop it all off Bendigo Gliding Club will be hosting the Victorian Soaring Association State Competition from 25th February 2023 through to 4th March 2023 This is a pretty big deal and should bring about 30 of the most modern gliders in Australia to our Raywood airstrip. They will compete for trophies in various classes of gliders We are hoping for good weather over this time, and we also hope to bring a bit of business into the town with visitors probably requiring snacks, fuel, full meals, accommodation and so on After this the season will start winding down for the cooler weather from April onwards, when we can start dreaming about the next soaring season!

Some improvement can be expected from some of the challengers next week, which will be interesting to watch.

Come along and join in and have some fun! Ian Arnold

It was the semi finals last weekend and we had 3 sides step onto the court. Our 11s were up first and looked a lot less nervous stepping onto the court this week We were able to get away to a handy lead early on, with some great defensive pressure and all over court play Even with many positional changes in the last half, we were able to maintain our lead and run out the game winners 8 1. All 12 girls were able to step onto the court this week and contribute to their first ever finals win. Our 15s were next to step onto the court on Saturday It was a close first quarter, but Carisbrook were able to sneak away to an early lead We showed some fantastic court play in the 2nd, but Carisbrook were able to maintain their lead and we went into the last quarter 8 goals down. The girls came out firing in the last quarter and with some amazing defensive pressure, were able to narrow in on Carisbrook, unfortunately though, we ran out of time and we went down 20 26. It was a great fight from the girls. Our 13s took on Carisbrook on Sunday. The girls started the game really strong and confident, getting away to an early lead. Carisbrook were able to fight their way back in the second to bring the score within 2 goals We dropped in the 3rd and Carisbrook were able to capitalise and go into the last quarter with a 6-goal lead. Our girls never gave up and won the last quarter but were unfortunately unable to fully close the gap, going down 25 29 Once again, these girls fought to the very end and played some fantastic netball Unfortunately, there is no second chance for 15s and 13s and their finals campaign has come to end. We are all so proud of their season and how far they have come. Our 11s are keeping our hopes alive as they take on Carisbrook in the Preliminary Finals on Sunday, 8.30am at Princes Park We would love to see as many supporters there as possible, cheering on this fantastic group, girls!
