A whole day yesterday (Sunday) without any rain but that was made up for today It must be nearly springtime, daffodils are starting to bloom, the later wattles are turning golden and the frogs have started "singing" at night. Lots of birds are really enjoying this wet weather
I have seen plovers (masked lapwings if you must, ornithologically correct) standing up to their ankles in puddles, but one the other day was in deep enough to look as if he was having a bath A pair of ducks were playing in a running gutter on the side of the road. There are lots of pairs of ducks along the road edges too.
The latest scientific waste of money is serious research into trying to resurrect the Tassie Tiger Again, I ask why? Is it to prove how clever they are with DNA and stuff, or a desire to bring back the top predator to Tasmania??. Surely they could be using their brilliant minds for something more useful.

More remarkably, Joe Lacey, a hero of Dunolly’s 1958 premiership was on hand to savour it. On the other foot, Terry Long, who coached multiple Avoca premierships in the early 1970’s was indeed the timekeeper for today’s game. Ha ha, he would have been stunned as Avoca received a 50m penalty in the last quarter when a loud spectator rated the umpire a galah I bet he has heard far worse go unpenalised, but this is a little change for the Dunobetter.lly also had some memorable netball wins and a large crowd mingled happily after the game. Once again I was struck by the sense of community So many good people drawn together by sport some on the playing field, some as spectators, some in the engine room of volunteers. Amazing and wonderful to realise this club began in 1873 I can see why it has stood the test of time. Ian Lovel

Once again I was lucky enough to enjoy the entrancing atmosphere of country sport at Deledio Oval on August 20th, humbly as the field umpire. Dunolly knocked over Avoca to become the most unlikely of finalists after snapping a three year winless streak earlier this season

In the four page document it talks about ‘Social Return on Investment’ and states that for every $1 spent to run a club, there is at least $4.40 return in social value, in terms of increased social connectedness, wellbeing, and mental health status; employment outcomes; personal development; physical health; civic pride and support of other community groups
Councillor Liesbeth Long
Over the years I’ve attended footy games, either watching my husband or my two boys, or the odd AFL game. I don’t barrack for a particular team, as having a Collingwood supporter for a husband is more than enough for one household in my humble opinion so it’s probably fair to say I’m not a super passionate football Wenthusiast.hatIam though, is in deep appreciation of what local football clubs such as DFNC bring to a community. The pride, engagement and passion of the community watching the last game on Saturday, was a pleasure to witness Standing ‘round the fire, with locals chatting and watching Dunolly Seniors win their last game, securing a spot in the finals for the first time in 11 years, is something I will treasure for a long time.

I had the great pleasure of attending the final DFNC home game on Saturday, at Deledio Rec Reserve. Dunolly Seniors have had a stellar year with an amazing comeback, after only winning 2 games out of 58 between 2017 and the first round of 2022! I grew up in an academic family and sport was not part of my upbringing, except maybe for the odd soccer game, if the Netherlands made it to a final. It wasn’t until I met my husband Andrew at Dookie Agricultural College when I was 18, that I was first introduced to AFL football.
Footy brings people together and promotes good behaviours for a better community It nurtures sportsmanship, which is about teamwork, discipline and supporting each other. It fosters volunteers and I was in awe, watching all the individuals on Saturday, playing their role and going about the jobs that needed to be done to make the day such a successful event. Everyone played their part and was a cog that made everything run smoothly You are all legends, are a credit to the community and should be very proud of yourselves Bring on the finals

The sound of barking and the quick thinking of a young boy led emergency services on a lengthy rescue operation to pull two dogs from a mine shaft near Tarnagulla last week
Dunolly Fire Brigade captain Greg Humphrey said it was pure chance the dogs were found and that crews spent hours safely retrieving them with the assistance of Oscar 1 one of the CFA’s specialised rescue teams “A young boy was riding his push bike through the area and heard a dog barking, so he called the Tarnagulla police. It was very lucky,” he said. “Five of our members went out and helped Oscar 1 get the dogs out. I’d say we were out there for around four hours “It was an unusual

Businesses and community leaders are partnering to participate in a pilot project to attract skilled migrants to the Shire. The 12 month initiative Welcome to Central Goldfields is in response to staff and skills shortages primarily in Maryborough. There is a shortage of housing for these new residents, and I have put my hand up to billet a family in Dunolly It may only be for a few months just until they get on their feet, or it could be for long term. Either way, I am looking forward to making people feel welcome and safe in our wonderful community

Let me introduce you to the latest addition to my family, my new dog Skyla. I have written about becoming lost in the bush when taking her for a run, but have yet to mention what a lovely girl she is Just like Maddie, Skyla came from Queensland, but thi time I rigorously refused to let my daughter in law, who finds homes for unwanted dogs, find me a new dog, as i so complicated bringing one home. She agreed, but the day before I was to leave, Marie rang me to tell m she had been asked to re house a dog which s considered ideal for me and she couldn’t resist, despi the promise. I refused and instructed her not to bring he over to my daughter's as I had no intention of bringing dog back; I intended to find one locally which I had be planning to do since Maddie died. This must have fall on deaf ears because next morning there was a knock the door and there was Marie with a slim, eager looki black dog. I fought my urge to meet this dog and reiterated m decision not to meet her I tried my very best to ignore thi intruder, but somehow or other she got under my skin an I found myself actually patting her, against my bett judgement of course. Marie left without this dog, nam Skye, and I cautioned my daughter to take her back the next day, after taking me to the airport My daughter socialised Skye with Buddy and Holly, he two dogs, and she settled in, but I warned Skye not make herself too comfy, as it was very temporary.

Skye slept with the two dogs and early next morning awoke to a black head on my pillow, nudging me awak and a tail waving in the air It was very hard not respond. Oh heavens, I thought, I think this dog has go the better of me and that’s how it happened. I flew hom that day and two weeks later, after Marie had taken Sk to the vet for her check up, needles and chip, she was ready to leave for a different climate To fly an animal down is not cheap, quite a bit more than my own fare, but now the deed was done and off she went My grandson picked her up and brought her to Dunolly two weeks later

A 36 year old Maryborough man was fined $727 for taking firewood from the Maryborough State Forest, while a 72 year old Tarnagulla man was fined $727 and $282 for a breach in the Tarnagulla State Forest.
Conservation regulator and FFMVic authorised officers can enforce environmental laws and conduct frequent patrols in forests and parks, targeting the illegal collection of firewood from public land. Those caught breaking firewood collection rules can face penalties of up to $9246 or a year in prison. Vehicles and equipment may also be seized
“It’s great to see most people are doing the right thing and sticking to the collection seasons and designated areas, however people should know authorised officers regularly patrol parks, forests and reserves to catch those who aren’t. “We would also like to thank community members who contacted Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) to report this suspicious behaviour It is through community reporting that we were able to identify and fine four of the people.”
The 2022 spring domestic firewood collection season will begin on September 1st and run until November 30th. For more information on firewood collection visit www.vic.gov au/ collecting firewood To report the illegal cutting or removal of firewood anonymously call DELWP at 136 186
Six people including residents from Maryborough and Dunolly have been fined a combined nearly $5000 for breaching firewood collection rules around the region, with some caught thanks to community reporting All were fined for removing firewood outside a designated firewood collection area, with two receiving extra fines for illegally driving off road.
Fined for breaching rules in local forests

Possibly a new direction from Council A positive one
Thank you. Wayne McKail, President.
Regarding the Satisfaction Survey and the concerns around clarity of a budget listing, both these interactions involved many emails, and we have to say both officers we discussed these issues with were prompt, great communicators and polite.
At the moment, there are so many projects in the mix, around our shire all needing beginning and also a lot of committees being formed, this is a sign of potential activity We would like to see activity around these Fprojectsorexample, a permanent dance and a gymnasium classes venue for the community, and also that long awaited and most promised Youth Hub. We ask you to keep an eye out for your neighbours, friends and family Winter is nearly over but not just because it is winter. Every day, work with each other.
The third speaking with a team leader on a Council project, they also behaved in the most professional Wmannereleftfeeling with all three, that the communication and behaviour was of the highest level These Council representatives are a credit to the Council and represented the community on the highest level Well done and thank you In all three situations we left with a reasonably contented feeling and a belief that the interaction was worthwhile It is now down to their leaders to finish all these meetings, leaving us with a feeling of worth. CGR & RAI is not asking the Council to do it our way, but we ask that we leave with a feeling that we have been given a good hearing, that our input has been worthwhile, and we look forward to the outcome. More time is needed to obtain a final result on one and two. Thus far, thank you to those representatives of our Council for your time and we respect you for your professionalism From this you have gained respect. Extremely pleasing The outcome for the concern around the $1M question? We left with an agreement that things have been presented better, and still no 100% agreement as to the location of the funds in question The next Council monthly financial and capital projects report may shed more light on it, hopefully It is also extremely pleasing to see more activity around the stage four of the Carisbrook levee. An extremely long awaited project, which should have been completed many years ago

A new book co authored by a University of South Australia academic gives an insight into how text messaging celebrating its 30th birthday this year has been driven by technology and young people. Every day, nearly 20 billion text messages are sent worldwide, with more than 3000 emojis to choose from Short message services (aka SMS) are the single most used feature on a smartphone, but have they denigrated or improved our language?
“Ironically, once new expressions enter everyday language and become common, they lose their novelty and appeal for young people who then create new words and phrases to differentiate their identity and social group. The same trend can be seen with social media channels such as Facebook, created in 2004 by university students Once their parents started using it, young people moved on ” The only constant about language is that it changes, Dr Strambi says

“Despite the concerns often expressed by language purists, nearly three decades of electronic communication have demonstrated that speakers learn to switch confidently and accurately between formal and informal language It has even been suggested that text messaging may in fact enrich literacy, rather than hinder it.” Dr Strambi says young people have always been innovators when it comes to new words and expressions in our language, combining words learned from their parents with new phrases to create frequently used idioms.

In the book Exploring Language in Global Contexts, UniSA linguist Dr Antonella Strambi and Flinders University lecturer Dr Olga Sanchez Castro devote a chapter to addressing the impact of technology on language, citing more efficient communication and the role that young people have played in driving this Itchange ’s almost 30 years since the first text message was sent by 22 year old UK software programmer Neil Papworth on 3rd December 1992, wishing his colleague ‘Merry Christmas ’ From an original limit of 160 characters, messages are now media rich (including emojis, photos, videos and GIFs), can be sent by various channels, and have morphed from private social exchanges to useful communication tools for governments and businesses
“There is evidence to show that language is becoming more informal and more efficient both influenced by technology and text messaging has led that transformation. It is an asset, not an issue ”
“Where once they were purely social channels, SMS is now also used to send ‘pushed notifications’ such as reminders of payment dates, weather alerts, appointments and critical health messages,” Dr Strambi says “Text messaging has changed the way we communicate and while deep concerns have been expressed about how detrimental textspeak is to literacy and grammar, there is no real evidence to suggest that is the case.

Well, what a fabulous day we all had! A wonderful crowd played in the championships, which comprised nine holes in the morning and nine holes in the afternoon. This was coupled with a fun social event of nine holes during the afternoon. We were also celebrating 100 years of competitive golf at the Club. What fun! What golf! Just great to see so many people! We want to thank the CFA for the fabulous barbecue lunch. What a feast! And Margaret, Henry and Lazar, who provided the delicious lunch, fitted right in with the fun and happy mood all around. What lunch hosts they were and everyone enjoyed the outdoor barbecue. We had thought the weather might be against us as there was heavy rain throughout the previous night, but no, Tarnagulla had another great weather golfing day

What a great effort for under 11s, the whole season undefeated under 14s didn’t make it to finals, but great effort all year round. Reserves had a win against Avoca, didn’t make it into the finals, but tried their hardest all year. Seniors winning their final game for the year has put them into the final rounds for the first time since 2011! I hope all the boys do well in the final series and the atmosphere at the game on the weekend was unbelievable, with heaps of people at the game. It was great to have you all there thank you very much. Your President, Ric Lang Vice President’s Report In what we thought may be horrid conditions for our oval (like many others across the league), we were pleasantly surprised by the great condition in our last game for the home and away season against Avoca. Our undermanned 14s battled hard against quality opposition and continued to show guts and determination across all 4 quarters Best performers across the day were the Coopers (Polinelli and Willoughby), Ned and Harrison The DFNC is rapt with the development of these kids over the last 12 months and look forward to seeing them mature into senior footballers over the years to come. Our reserves had the opportunity of redemption against an undermanned Avoca, who were fielding 16 players Though at a disadvantage, the Avoca boys showed the better signs by half time, taking in a 14 point lead at the main break
The Dunolly boys worked hard to knock that deficit to 8 points at the last change, with a historic spray from coach Beary that had the boys finish strongly with an 11 point win in front of a vocal home crowd. Best players on the day were Matty Bradley, Rhys Bottams, Nicko Ryan and Cooper May The boys should be rapt with their efforts across the season, where getting a consistent 22 on the park has been a struggle looking forward to a big 2023 pre season. Our seniors knew the job they had in front of them, to win and almost guarantee a spot in the finals, lose and go home pondering the what ifs of the season However, the boys turned up from start to finish leading across the day and at every break. Fish, Xav and Danny Fulton offered plenty up forward, while Baz and Tranter were brilliant in the link up play. Big Grant Raven slotted in perfectly for his 1st senior game of 2022 and Josh Goodman played his best game for the season Shep and Adzy did what they do every week and provided run and carry across both wings. In a hard best to pick, Fish took the honours with a 4 quarter effort, Joshy Goodman for his impact across the day in the backline, Tranter for his inside work, the ever reliable Connor Sheppard for his work rate, with Baz and Adzy rounding out the top 6. Next up is Navarre on Sunday in the club’s first senior final in 11 years! The whole club and community will be around you give it a red hot crack guys!Jamie
What a great home game at Dunolly Football Netball Club, with wins for all junior sides going through to finals

Dunolly Football Netball Club President’s Report

We have had much interest in new team/club members, and we will be looking forward to especially building 11.5, 14.5 and 17.5 football sides up to where they should be We are looking great but there is still room to boost the numbers There is a fantastic opportunity for more intake on the field and in Coaching and Assistant Coach positions If you are interested, we’d like to hear from you 20asap.22has shown that the Club has the heart and family values to move forward for future generations and our local community Our 150th year 2023, is a great year to be on board. We are looking to break down more barriers, and break some personal club records We are looking to hold Interviews shortly in pre season and we are still inviting expressions of interest. Our fundraiser for the Netball court on the 20th went fabulously well The Avoca crowd was wonderful and the attendance on the night was massive. We thought we’d had some big events this year but this was possibly the biggest attendance so far. Thank you everyone for coming and supporting our netballers and to everyone who helped cook and clean (and all the bits in between), thank you You are absolute saints!
The 15s were able to get an early jump on Avoca and with some great defensive pressure and midcourt play, saw the girls maintain that lead throughout the game, finishing game winners 24 20 Gold and Grain incentive went to Brianna and Club went to Miya
This weekend Sunday 28th sees our under 11, 13 and 15 netballers in finals! And our Senior Footballers in the elimination final at Princes Park. The club is lucky enough to have come back around on the wheel to be hosting the bar on the same day! So you can grab a bevvy from us there, a stubby holder and cheer along. Everyone is welcome to come along to training on Thursday night at Deledio Reserve and enjoy the atmosphere.Travel
The 13s started strongly and never looked back With some strong all over court play, the girls were able to build on their lead and run out the game comfortable winners 28 3. The Bakery incentive went to Jas and Club incentive to Charley
Safe, Natalie Conlin. DFNC Secretary Netball Report
In the 17s, Avoca took an early lead The girls had some great passages of play and the defensive end worked tirelessly and even though we won the last quarter, we were unable to catch up, going down 17 25. Dunolly started really well in the C grade with some great play all over the court. Avoca upped their defensive pressure from there and we found it hard getting it into the attackers The ladies gave it their all, but Avoca was just too strong We went down 13 68.
Page 26 The Welcome Record Wednesday 24th Aug Dunolly Football Netball Club Latest News from the Nest
B Grade Avoca took an early lead, but we did not make it easy for them, with some fantastic defensive pressure.
Our 11s kicked off the last game of our home and away season with an extremely close game. Avoca took an early lead, but we were able to close that gap and head into the last quarter, 9 goals each. With some great defensive pressure and very steady play, we were able to run out the game winners 12 9. This incredible group of kids went through the home and away undefeated and each and every one has contributed to a great season
The score didn’t reflect how well these girls played on Saturday We went down 20 42. A Grade had a big job ahead of them taking on the undefeated Avoca. Our first quarter was really strong only trailing by 3 Avoca came out strongly in the 2nd and got away to a big lead. Once again, our defensive end worked tirelessly, getting many deflections, our goalers were shooting well but unfortunately, we were unable to come back, going down 46 69 The Club incentive went to Mel and Railway Hotel incentive went to CongLeahratulations to all our teams this season Although wins were hard to come by in the senior grades, everyone put 100% in week in and week out. Our 17s did an amazing job this season and for a group of girls who have never played together before, they nearly made the top Nex8!tyear we are sure they will be up there Our 11s and 13s will be playing in the 1st qualifying final on Saturday and 15s will be playing in the elimination final on Sunday It would be great to see as many supporters there as possible, cheering these amazing juniors on! We have a very talented group coming through Good luck in your finals campaign 11s, 13s and 15s Mel Schodde, Netball Co ordinator

Reserves
On behalf of me and the team we would like to thank everyone for their support and time volunteering each week Without you the game cannot go on, so we thank you once again and I hope to see you all next year for another crack!
Hayden Wellard. U14 5 Coach Junior Football Report
The unfortunate loss of champion Ben and Co Captain Isaac through injury (outside of footy life) made it a tough slog and our numbers low But next year, an older junior Eagles team will look to pull off a few more wins and continue to build a strong team Well done to all involved and we look forward to building more strength in character and success on the ground in 2023. Greg Crumpton and Callum Liddicoat Junior Football Coordinators
The second quarter brought m with Avoca clearly up for the quarter, with Dunolly wasteful remaining at 14 points Sensing that Avoca were starti being undermanned, Dunolly r and Mitch Wingrave using the great effect, creating opportuni the game back to 8 points A hard final push was needed team was desperate to go ou contributing strongly to run ov end the year with a victory Best Players for the day wer Bottams, Nic Ryan, Cooper Jackson Goodwin, with Matt With that our year is done. Thanks to all involved in the representing the club in finals! RAZZA DAZZA!
Heading into our final home and away game against Avoca the equation was simple; win and we make the top 8, lose and our season was over. Prior to running out before the game, our senior group gathered and shared a moment of silence in respect to the Wingrave brothers and their family, remembering the boy’s mother Bianca
Going into the weekend knowing it would be the final game of the year for the Reserves, we were keen to make a good show of it. Avoca had beaten us earlier in the year in a match many felt that made the team all the different result. Avoca however, fielding an un out of the gates hard, winning and taking their opportunities up point lead at the first break
On Saturday, the boys came out against a much stronger side in Avoca. Even though they fought well in the last game of the home and away season, they went down by a large margin. Well done to our resilient Dunolly Eagle Boys and Girls 2022! Full credit to all the U14.5s who stayed positive and saw out what was a tough season with just one win and many crushing defeats
Rather than report about the game this week, I would like to instead thank the boys for what hasn’t been an easy year on field but they embraced it and put 120% in each week and gained some new mates friendships were made they held their heads high every week, on and off the field, so well done lads
Dunolly Football Netball Club Seniors
InRogerswhat was a very physical first quarter, we were able to come into the first break with a seven-point advantage. Our work rate needed to lift if we were to have any chance of holding onto this small lead, and that it did; although Avoca had the advantage of the slight breeze, our will to play the style of football we wanted was evident. We played for each other and kicked out to a 34 point lead at the main break. The second half saw the game plateau, with both teams kicking four goals for the remainder of the match, leading to us prevailing 13.13 91 to 8.8 56 victors Xavier Ryan led the way in front of the big sticks, kicking three majors, while Oscar Keogh and the Goodwin brothers also kicked two each. Better players for the day were Fisher, Goodman, Tranter, Sheppard, B.Goodwin and Zuk. We keep our season alive and look forward to the Under 14.5 Report
