Annual 2 Day Traditional Gathering 13th 14th August 2022 It has been three years since we’ve been able to hold this event, due to COVID lockdowns, mandates and the theft of our equipment! It’s nice to be back up and running again! It was a great turnout, considering the wet weather. There were 79 people in attendance, aged between four months and 84 years, with 43 Archers The course consisted of two 25 Novelty Target Field rounds, the Clout, Kings Round, Axe and Knife throwing.
There were archers from all over Victoria and NSW, who braved the weather, dressed in mediaeval costumes, wellies and brollies They all had a great time and said they’ll be back next year! We would like to congratulate Tristan Clough, who was overall winner and all participants and event winners Well done! A big thank you to: Our members who volunteered their time to make the weekend a success, Dunolly CFA crew, who catered for the event, DFNC for the use of their facilities.

Rosie’s Ramble It has been a very damp few weeks, so a day without some rain is a bit of a novelty We might be wet, but we do not have floods as parts of Gippsland have today It has been a great few weeks for our elite sports people. There were the Commonwealth Games, tennis, golf and just about every sport known to man and woman I have some brightly coloured garden gloves When I was having my coffee break on the back verandah, I noticed two bees very busy on the coloured parts as if they were on flowers They must go for the colour of flowers, not necessarily the smell I have been wondering about all the fuss there is about planting tulips, putting them in the chiller etc Sister Ramble gave me a pack of tulip bulbs many years ago. I used to put them in the crisper and carefully followed all the instructions For several seasons now I have just left them in a big pot outside. They bloom every year and have increased and multiplied I may have to repot them before next year. I think the Dunolly winters are cold enough to take the place of the chiller. There are serious studies being done in Australia and Germany into the sleeping habits of spiders Even though they have no eyelids they have rapid eye movements similar to those of dreaming humans Spider brains are also being studied. WHY??? I wonder about one of the little girls in the Dettol ad on TV, the one where they come for a snack The table is sprayed with the germ killer and so are their hands They hop into the fruit then the dark haired girl pulls a face I wonder if she got a taste of spray from her hands Rosie Joke Book "Are You the game warden?" asked a lady thet

We look forward to receiving contributions of stories or articles for The Welcome Record, as we know many readers love the human interest side of our paper It helps some people keep in touch and often gives them a bit of a laugh to brighten their day, in particular when they read Cynthia’s stories or Rosie’s Ramble. Our regular contributors are few and far between however and we will always welcome your own stories. Many do not even consider that their own life stories or reminiscences may be worth telling, or that others would like to hear about them, but that is not the case.

Never has there been a more critical time than right now There is a struggle in trading, this being a result of not only a cold Winter, COVID, the higher cost of living and petrol, but also, from a serious lack of support by the locals We very much need the locals to spend their dollars here and for us not to depend just on the tourists
Shop Local — Shop Dunolly Dunolly is the loveliest hamlet in Central Goldfields Shire, being enriched with magnificent historical buildings and spacious parks with fantastic amenities for our children. In our beautiful tree lined main street, Broadway, in addition to our welcoming eateries, there are at least eight retail shops and galleries which need to be supported Yes, more than eight retail shops and galleries!
Each one of these shops is enthusiastically displayed with love and passion Whether it is a collectable item, a beautiful, handcrafted item, jewellery or art. We do have it all, you just need to come and have a look. Sometimes there’s that very special gift that you’re looking for, or you might want to spoil yourself with a unique present. Often Layby is available to assist with those that have a budget Gift wrapping is also available, to help save on that extra cost.
A big thank you to Jenny Scott and to The Welcome Record for your continuous support in doing articles and photos of our businesses We need all the help we can get. We encourage and urge you to please come into our shops and give us a go. After all, we need to support one another to keep our shops open and more importantly, to keep our town so incredibly unique.
Our retail shops are stocked with a brilliant array of countless new, old, surprising and different items, ready for your perusal When was the last time that you made a conscious effort to come and explore what there is on offer right here in Dunolly before you made the trip

The rumble of eight cylinder engines will be heard across the district this weekend as classic Holdens roll into town, but beyond being a dream come true for car enthusiasts, this weekend also holds special meaning for the Pilgrim family It’s been 50 years since the first V8 HQ SS rolled off the Holden assembly line at Fishermans Bend and to mark the milestone, some 50 of the vehicles will be cruising into the district. Organised by Avoca stalwart Marg Pilgrim, the event is in honour of her late husband Hayden, a lover of all things Holden who sadly passed away in February this year Hayden’s love for Holdens started early when he managed to get his hands on one of the elusive trial run SS vehicles, something Marg said quickly became his pride and joy. “As a youngster, Hayden was a car fanatic and a Holden man but of course could never afford to buy a new car,” she said. “One of Hayden’s neighbours worked at the Holden factory in Fishermans Bend and said ‘Hayden, you need to get a V8’ , which Hayden said he’d love but couldn’t afford. “His neighbour turned around and said he could buy one from the Holden board, a perk of being an employee, and sell it to Hayden “I think Hayden was planning on going overseas but the car stepped in and he took it it was actually the press test car for Victoria and he was delighted with it, it was his pride and joy ” The SS was Holden’s trial run to see whether a four door Monaro would be popular and released with a price tag of $3295 or $3500 on road and in three colours, including Ultra Violet like the Pilgrim’s, the vehicles sold like Jhotcakesust1600 of the vehicles were made in August 1972 but demand was so high an additional 1200 were badged and plated the following year Marg said it was appealing having a V8, but this didn’t always marry up with using it as the family car. “The possibility of travelling around in a brand new V8 Holden was really inspiring for Hayden and the SS became our family car until the kids got a bit bigger,” she said. “I can remember as a young bloke Hayden put these wide wheels on it because that’s what young guys do and with a V8 in it, it was a bit of fun “For me though, trying to get into a car park in Chadstone or wherever else to get the groceries was a nightmare, the car didn’t have power steering and the wide wheels didn’t help.” Hayden and Marg had been the driving forces behind organising the 40th anniversary of the HQ SS to take place in Avoca in 2012, at a time when SS owners were largely isolated and had little to do with one another. The 40th event saw guest speakers talk about their days with Holden and the development of the HQ SS and Marg said it was hailed a resounding success “When we realised the 40th was coming up we knew very few SS owners at that stage, we tracked a few more down and spread the word and those people took a leap of faith and came to Avoca to meet other SS owners,” she said. “It was just like one big family and a core group vowed then to meet every second year in August, the weekend was put aside and there’d be about 20 cars with 30 or 40 people.” The SS owners grew into a friendship group for Hayden and Marg, who said the 50th anniversary would be bittersweet “It was a big friendship group and it will be nice to catch up with everyone who’s been so supportive of Hayden and me as well over the journey,” she said. “It will be a tough weekend but it’s in Hayden’s honour as much as anyone’s because without him, it never would have happened “My legacy is to carry that on for everyone else now and this event is good for the people involved but it’s also good for the town it’s bringing an influx of people and benefits businesses and community groups too ” There will be registration and a meet and greet at the Avoca Hotel on Friday evening and again on Saturday morning at the Avoca Public Park where breakfast will be provided by the Avoca CWA A group photo of the SS vehicles will be taken at 11.30 am and after lunch, the group will visit local car museums, including David and Dorothy Beer’s private museum. The Beer’s property showcases a bit of everything, ranging from old farm machinery, historic tractors, automobiles, aeroplanes and much more. David said interest for the museum opening and overall 50th anniversary weekend is growing “The museum is pretty well known in certain circles and we’ve got people coming down from Nowra in New South Wales to check it out,” he said. “There’s no easy way to describe the collection, other than to say there’s a lot of historic machinery and tools from the late 1800s. “I’m always picking things up as I go and I enjoy it, we purposefully built our property so we could have everything here and it’s great. “I think what we do is pretty interesting and to open up and support Marg and the 50th anniversary is pretty great too ” David and Dorothy’s museum will open this Saturday, August 20 from 10 am until 3pm and is located at 608 Maryborough St Arnaud Road, Alma. The main display of the HQ SS vehicles will be this Sunday, August 21 at the Avoca Public Park and car enthusiasts and historic vehicle clubs are invited to join the event. Food trucks will provide catering and there will be displays and memorabilia of the SS’s history Article and photograph Riley Upton Courtesy Maryborough Advertiser

Update
In the past, the small town of Tarnagulla was always well known for its pageants, street parades and other celebrations, in earlier days drawing on a much larger population. In recent years, the whole town has only come together on an occasional basis, but when it does happen, the events are well patronised and enjoyed by both locals and visitors alike. A hugely successful Tarnagulla Strictly Vintage Fair previously took place in both 2016 and 2017 and we are so pleased to now be able to welcome its revival on Sunday 11th September, 2022 from 9am to T3pmarnagulla has a unique and largely untouched heritage streetscape, providing a perfect setting for an event which showcases vintage wares, clothing, classic cars and retro Macaravansnyactivities will combine to make this an event not to be missed, with classic cars and caravans lining the main street, stalls featuring an array of vintage collectables, an interactive fashion parade, sumptuous high teas and a history display in the historic Victoria Theatre, together with a visit by our wonderful Queen Victoria. Music will be provided in Victoria Park by the Maryborough Brass Band throughout the day and the CFA will conduct a breakfast BBQ Members of Dunolly Vehicle Club will also be visiting, giving an opportunity for people to view their classic cars Many more attractions will feature on the day, including games for all the family, so there will be something for everyone

On a more serious note. The photo is printed on a postcard. On the other side, the postcard is dated 9th March, 1908. The letter was written by B. Fullerton, who worked at the mine”. Thanks to John for providing this background information
In the photo, you can see the water from the monitor washing material to a sump. From here a gravel pump took it up to the washing plant. Behind the shed, the elevated water race brought water from the Old Lead Reservoir The height created initial pressure when it was fed into the pressure pump.
Members of Dunolly Historical & Arts Society recently discovered a previously unseen image on an old postcard relating to Dunolly and made the decision to purchase it for the sum of $21. The image was very faded, but still worth adding to the Museum’s collection The image on the postcard featured the Old Lead Dredge; John Tully has provided the following description.
“Although we refer to it as the Dunolly Dredge, it was really a hydraulic sluicing plant. This mine worked from 1907 to 1909, starting between the Recreation Reserve and the railway line and working downstream. Where they finished, we now call the Dredge Hole. The Mine was operated by the Old Dunolly Gold Sluicing Company NL.

That story set me thinking of the variety of jobs that lay behind me in my younger days Apart from my glamour job in London that I wrote about recently, I can remember some that were far less glamorous but which I took on to save up for a working holiday overseas. I had been working as a copywriter at a radio station, and being a cadet journalist, wasn't earning much. Then I saw a job advertised for a junior lab assistant at the Walter and Eliza Hall Research Institute, with a very good salary In those days, jobs were so plentiful that if you were half plausible, the job was yours It entailed alternative shifts in the research laboratories, two weeks in the mouse room and two weeks in the equipment room Ordinarily I shied very clear of even the suggestion of a mouse on my horizon, but this was different because laboratory mice kept in confinement are just like pet mice. These ones were all sorts of colours, black and white, white, tan etc, and very quiet and docile. They were housed in shoebox sized tins, with wire mesh lids and arranged on labelled racks according to age, so each week the tins would be moved up a shelf, ready for collection from the top shelf by the research scientists. My job was to clean each box, add fresh sawdust, food and water and move the tins to the next Cageshelf.dmice are slow and quiet, so when I put on the gloves, I would lift the mouse up by the tail and place it on the bench while I cleaned the box. The mouse would sit quietly there, preening its whiskers while waiting to be returned to the box. However, if a mouse occasionally got left out, the next morning it would be like a house mouse, darting under shelves to escape recapture. The mouse room had a strong zoo like smell, as was natural with caged animals, but working all day there you stopped noticing it until you came back on Monday after the weekend. The strong mouse odour then hit you when the door was opened The alternating weeks were spent in the equipment room and my job was to make glass pipettes and I loved doing that. I had to light a Bunsen burner and hold a glass tube centering it in the flame, turning it around slowly until the glass would start melting in the middle. Then the two halves would be pulled apart and the ends would be sealed before the glass started to cool and lo and behold a pipette. I thought that was a fun job and always enjoyed making pipettes One day there was a lightning train strike and one of the girls I worked with was stranded, unable to get home. I travelled by tram, so was safe, but poor Barb decided to stay at work for the night and camp in the mouse room
Stories from Cynthia
As she was a good friend, I decided to keep her company, so we found food in the little kitchen, probably only biscuits, wrapped ourselves in our white coats and towels and slept on two empty wire mouse racks: not very comfortable at all. It was so eerie hearing the mice squeak and rustle in the night and you can imagine the look on our supervisor's face when she discovered us in the morning She was quite amazed, but did send out for some nice hot coffee to warm us up Life has taken me in many directions and am hoping it still will. Five top tips scam 1. No one should be asking reputable company won’t a over the phone or via email. 2. If the Caller starts to threaten you 3. If the Caller is evasive to your questions 4. There isn’t an official number that you can use to call back on to check 5. A scammer pretends to be someone you trust such as a Microsoft Technician or Telstra claiming there’s a problem with your computer. How to Stop Calls from Scammers: 1. Hang up! Even if it’s not a scammer calling, when a company is calling you illegally, it’s not a company you want to do business with. When you get a robocall, don’t press any numbers Instead of letting you speak to a live operator or remove you from their call list, it might lead to more robocalls 2. Call Blocking or Call Labelling Scammers can use the Internet to make calls from all over the world. They don’t care if you’re on the “National Do Not Call Registry” Your best defense against unwanted calls is Call Blocking 3. Don’t Trust your Caller ID Scammers can make any name or number show up on your Caller ID. That’s called spoofing Even if it looks like a Government Agency like Centrelink calling, or the call is from a local number, it could be a scammer from anywhere in the world. With the initial breaking of the ground at the Skate Park, there will be a few weeks before the next stage commences and with concerns around past and coming Satisfaction Surveys, we are also pleased to see the Council has informed the community of this. This 2022/23 Satisfaction CGR & RAI contacted the Council and JWS researchers for clarification around the dates, numbers and process around this new quarterly Satisfaction Survey Council informed us that the complete process has not been finalised, and the 29th July survey which took place, occurred without Council being aware. We then contacted JWS asking for an explanation, and they informed us that the Council is their client and they have all the appropriate documents, so we should approach the Council if we have any questions CGR & RAI then contacted the Shire again, and they have informed us that they will follow this through and report to us the situation on Monday 15th August, or at the earliest possible time. So, this now leaves us with no answers, a satisfaction survey the community is participating in, the Council are not aware of the process and the company JWS collecting the data. Is this good Itenough?alsoappears the Maryborough Station Project has received delays Hopefully the Skate Park will be completed on time. Over $1million stated, but still not explained. As at the 28th June, 2022 public Council Meeting, the 2022/23 Budget was passed. In February 2022 that budget was submitted for public comment. One public submission centred around five concerns:
Central Goldfields Residents and Ratepayers Assoc. Inc.
3. Skate park $250K grant From the budget $225K was shifted from grant to Council revenue, then back to grant. We received confirmation from Council that no extra than $250K was received as grants, and accounting standards were altered. Yet the $225K was reinstated in this year's Budget.
1. Carisbrook levee Stage 4 $610K listed in that Monthly Capital works as “Contract awarded”.
2. Carisbrook levee Stage 3 $309K listed in that Monthly Capital works as “Pleasant St Drainage.
With the Customer Service percentage of 58%, only one shire was lower, the next closest was 61%. With the past week’s replies from Council, they will not increase their public presence and still struggle to reply to questions, so we wonder what the Council and Councillors plan to do to increase our satisfaction survey results Not to mention their own responsibilities to the community. Is this good enough? Thank you. Wayne McKail, President
4. Why was the Monthly Capital funding (which were grants) not listed in the Budget under grants?
5. If the $610K for Stage 4 tender was granted, could you please provide the tender information? So this leaves a question as to why nearly $1M has been stated for projects in the Monthly Capital works, yet not declared in the Budget nor explained? Since February 2022, we have been trying to obtain clarification regarding the above questions At the June meeting, one Councillor stated that all budget submissions were resolved satisfactorily In May 2022 Cr Sproull stated on a thread where we were questioning the $25K to $250K Skate Park Grant statements “If Council has informed you that figures you are using are incorrect and you continue to use those incorrect figures, you are spreading misinformation that you know to be false How exactly is that working together as you claim you wish to do?” A note on this one: The figures we stated were figures tabled and approved by all Councillors Yet the Councillor can publicly state that we spread misinformation but could not clarify to us exactly what was the misinformation which he had previously voted to accept as accurate. Since February 2022, we have been trying to find the answers to this issue, of which Cr Sproull admitted he was not the best person to answer. We have now taken it to the Council after the reply from three different council representatives was to the nature of: There appears to be some confusion on these matters I can guarantee our figures are correct on both documents and as there is confusion, should we leave the issue? We requested a meeting to discuss the outstanding concerns and Council has agreed. Very pleased to finally get a meeting A question why was this discussion approach not adopted back in February, March, April, or even May, when it was obvious there was misunderstanding evident? With the satisfaction survey, Cr Meddows Taylor has stated we must compare our scores to like councils CGR&RAI has done exactly that. From 11 of the 19 small shires, our average all over score of 53% is only equalled by one other shire, all the rest are above.

Kicking the first goal of the last kept the belief and a guaranteed finals spot alive for Dunolly, but again Lexton fought back and kicked the final 2 goals of the game, to take the win 68 45. We now face a must win game this week to have a shot at the finals and following 2 disappointing losses, we must regroup and stick together. The better players for the day were the ever consistent Bailey Goodwin, Connor Sheppard, Lachlan Tranter, Mitch Goodwin, Laughlan Orr and Haydn Leech.
The third quarter was nothing to write home about, as both teams fought hard for control over the ball with it spending a majority of time between the arcs, with both sides going goalless for the term A big final push was needed in the last quarter and Matt Goodwin putting one home brought some extra life to the team Lexton’s heavy rotation on the bench, with their extra 4 available players began to take its toll as their spread and work from contest to contest started to shine through, as they ended up 49 28 winners Nobody could fault the efforts on the day from the undermanned side and heads were held high, leaving the ground. Best Players were Josh Leech, Nic Ryan & Grant Raven while Matt Goodwin & Jayden McDonald kicked 2 Goals each Andrew Bearpark, Reserves Coach Seniors Report
On Saturday, we were in for a boggy, wet slog in what was a very winnable game. We started well in the first half with two goals from Liam The heavy conditions started to take their toll on both sides, but with belief they kept fighting hard right till the end There have been some big improvements in the last few weeks due to their hard work all year, so well done ladsHayden Wellard, Coach Reserves Report
A do or die game for the senior group, with our backs against the wall and with some quality outs, the boys knew it was going to be a finals type of match with the TTigers.hegame started very much on our terms, as we kicked 5 goals to 3 in the first, to lead at the quarter time break, thanks largely to the ball use of Bailey Goodwin and Connor Sheppard in struggling conditions. The second term went very much pear shaped and with hail belting over us, the experienced and bigger bodies from the home side took advantage and kicked away to lead at half time by 6 points
The message was clear at half time that we needed to bounce back and play our style of footy, but under trying conditions and through no lack of effort, Lexton continued to enhance their lead and take a nice 15 point buffer into the last quarter.
Travelling to Lexton always presents its challenges and this weekend showed that, as Dunolly were welcomed to a miserable rainy day Losing a couple of key numbers before the bounce only added to the challenge, but Dunolly were keen to show they were up for the fight, in the first quarter going into the break just 4 points down, with the team tackling hard around the ball and running hard both ways The second quarter continued as a scrappy affair with Lexton taking their opportunities early to open up a solid lead, before a couple of late goals by Jayden McDonald brought the team back to within 13 points

Page 28 The Welcome Record Wednesday 17th A g The year 2016 produced the perfect climatic conditions for the growth of Australian wildflowers. All over the country, botanists were out cataloguing all the flowers they found. Dunolly resident Marion Edwards wore out at least one pair of shoes as she trampled the local hills photographing as many wildflowers as she could. Over the next few months she will share some of those photos with The Welcome Record readers.
Wahlenbergia Also known as Blue Bells. There are many varieties of these. The local one has flowers about 2cm across. They have rather wiry stems which like to wind their way up through other small shrubs. They do not have many leaves. While they like to be moist they do not like wet feet
Wahlenbergia This white one is rarer than the blue The white flowers can have up to eight petals. It grows in the same environment as the blue one They were both found in rocky ground not far from Dunolly.
