Did you Catch the Train in Dunolly? Groups of locals could be seen at local railway crossings last Sunday, as they took the opportunity to view and photograph the historic locomotives and carriages of the Grainlander, on its return journey to Melbourne. This Grainlander trip was part of an ongoing series of rail excursions organised by 707 Operations; these offer a range of experiences, catering to both rail enthusiasts and holidaymakers alike. The 707 Operations group is a not-for-profit operation which maintains, restores and operates a collection of historic locomotives and rolling stock. This weekend trip was described as a “Heritage Steam and Diesel-hauled Slow Rail Journey” and incorporated visits to Mallee townships and opportunities to visit some of the Victorian

Silo Art Trail locations, before heading back through the various towns on the way back to Southern Cross Station. Of course, Dunolly residents are already familiar with engine whistles, as various trains regularly meander through the crossings in town, however, for many of us old enough to remember, the haunting sound of a steam train and its whistle will always evoke strong memories of days gone by.
