After two years of COVID restrictions, Dunolly was once again free to conduct this year’s Anzac Day Dawn Service and March down Broadway. A large number of participants lead by Bradley Saul on bagpipes, marched from the Post Office cenotaph to the RSL Hall for the Commemorative Ceremony, stopping briefly to lay wreaths at soldiers memorial.

The Ceremony then moved outside to the flag pole where Bradley Saul played a moving rendition of The Last Post on the trumpet. The Ode was recited by Joe Lacey and Phil Vernon, with the Australian Flag being raised by Joe Lacey. Once the official proceedings finished a light lunch was enjoyed in the hall.
The Commemorative Ceremony was emceed by Dunolly School Principal Katie Lovel and Dunolly

I did not get to Studio 33, but we did see Val's exhibition in St Arnaud earlier this year. Based on the quality of the works there, I am sure her exhibition did not disappoint. Another success story for the Tiny Towns Art Trail people and a tribute to all their hard work.
A warm Saturday afternoon invited us all out to explore the Tiny Towns Art Trail in Dunolly, and there was quite a bit to see.
Puzzle Flat Art Gallery, Dunolly Museum and the Historic Court House were open and welcomed many visitors. Many people stopped to admire the progress of the mural which was being painted on the wall of the GoldSearch building over the weekend. Our back page this week features the full story of this latest attraction on Broadway. The Tiny Towns Art Trail created a lot of

At the gallery, the portrait competition had much to recommend it too. A big black crow immediately drew Jean's glance, while I struggled to choose between an owl, a horse and a woman. But really all of them were worth a vote.
In glorious sunshine, members of Maryborough and Dunolly car clubs enjoyed a run to Landsborough. 16 vehicles from the two clubs met at Natte Yallock for morning tea before heading to Landsborough where an excellent meal was provided at the Landsborough Hotel Members ate outside in convivial surroundings and were entertained with music provided by The Groove Dudes. It was a successful event and may be a precursor to more combined outings. Thanks to the organisers for their efforts.
I dropped by the Community Garden to see the new colourful panels on the share table and they look great. Coming soon will be a seed sharing container which I am sure will be very popular. Drop around and have a look. Keep updated via their facebook page: Dunolly Community Garden or for our online readers follow this link:https://www.facebook.com/DunollyCG

The Autistic Narnians had a very colourful exhibition at the Arts Hub. The digital display really caught my eye, as did the red topped mushroom/toadstool and the linocuts. The enthusiasm of the young artists was lovely to see. Anna Ashton's felt work never fails to find admirers, and even more so when she explains the intricacies of construction needed in some pieces.

Each weekend and on public holidays, tourist information is now accessible on Broadway, from a brochure stand stocked by the volunteers at the Rural Transaction Centre, on the corner of Broadway and Bull Street. The stand will be placed adjacent to the RTC, providing a valuable resource for weekend visitors to town during the hours the Centre is closed. Of course, during the week, the information will continue to be available inside the Centre.

I continue to help community members with this bonus, which has been extended until the middle of the year. If you receive a government payment and have a concession card from Centrelink, I can help you apply. I’ll need a copy of your most recent power bill, as well as your concession card. This is a one off payment, so call me at the Centre for an appointment.

The Criterion Hotel changed its name to the Railway Hotel in 1873 ahead of the railway arriving in Dunolly. Criterion Lane did not become Railway Lane but kept its name. It was not until 1890 when the Post Office was built that the lane was fenced and absorbed into the Post Office property.

Criterion Lane
In 1863 the Bull & Mouth Hotel in Dunolly was demolished and two small brick shops built. A narrow strip of land alongside them was sold to Ernst Ernstsen who owned the Criterion Hotel.

John Tully’s Lost Streets of Dunolly
Simpsons Lane

George Simpson owned the Bendigo Hotel in Dunolly. He became quite wealthy and purchased a number of other properties. Two of these were near Burnt Creek to the south west of Dunolly. When the Pound Rush started in 1865 some of the diggings were referred to as on the west side of Simpsons Lane. That is the road that led to Simpson’s paddocks.
George Simpson left Dunolly in 1869 and the name Simpsons Lane was slowly lost. We now call this Separation Road.

Ernstsen used the land as access from Broadway to Barkly Street and the public garden. Although this right of way was always private land it was used by the public as a shortcut to the hotel. It became known as Criterion Lane or Criterion Street. Being between two buildings the lane was poorly lit of a night and a place where muggings occurred.

One of the tasks the 13 Councils participating in the Central Victorian Goldfields World Heritage Listing Bid are undertaking is to identify special sites and travel journeys that can be further assessed for significance by experts as the Bid develops.
Dunolly however is very much part of the Welcome Stranger story, for at the time of the discovery it was taken there to be weighed. It had to be broken up just to fit on the scales!

Two Cornish miners, Deason and Oates, found the huge nugget named the Welcome Stranger while prospecting in the Victorian goldfields on 5th February 1869. It was 61cm long when it was found just below the surface at Moliagul and its net weight was 72.02 kilograms.
If my calculations are correct with current gold prices around $86,000 a kilo, the value in today’s terms would be over six million dollars!

Dunolly therefore is very much part of a story which is unique in the history of the world and which we need to tell in engaging and exciting ways to the many who are likely to visit in the future to discover a very special and wonderful place.
It’s easy to become familiar with a story over time and through that familiarity lose a sense of just how significant that story is. The story of the discovery of the Welcome Stranger is an example of this the largest alluvial gold nugget discovery in the history of the world.

Do our Councillors and CEO know what an Annual Report should contain or fully understand what they submit or vote on? To answer the original question, can the community be part of Council decisions and will they listen to you? The answer is YES. Well done to all involved for admitting there was an error and rectifying it. Also, happy to hear the Council is looking into broadening their community consultation to possibly using Zoom meetings. We ask what happened to Open Public meetings? Transparency, trusting and community confidence are fantastic values and we look forward to regaining that.
• The Performance Statement at page 118. Council failed to mention that the Annual Report went from 116 pages to 126 pages, which is a lot of data missing or Governanceshifted.reduced from $120K to $58K with the reason ”Costs associated with elected representatives in line with previous years. The increase in overall costs is associated with Council Election costs (October 2020).”

On reading the 2020 21 Annual Report, CGR&RAI had concerns on the governance figures and many other statistics which we believed were not present. So CGR&RAI, after discussion with Council on a few items, decided to place an album up in our Ratepayers’ Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/media/set/) which highlighted the missing reports we questioned for community interest.
with Heritage Victoria had already been held, yet it appears no community discussion around a preferred location. We understand with heritage being an issue, that locations are limited. This being a State Government grant and initiative on non council owned land, maybe was a contributing factor.
The pattern of little community participation, CGR&RAI feels should be looked at long and hard by Council. The importance of the community being part of their own development and taking ownership should be a priority. Can community be part of the Council's decisions, and will Council listen to you? Read on.

At December 2021's Council public meeting, Councillors all praised and voted in the 2020 21 Annual Report, it was a unanimous vote.

The previous year was $121K which also raises questions, was this figure correct? This February's updated version was also praised and unanimously voted on by all Councillors.
Looking forward to more good work from the Central Goldfields Shire. Thank you.
The question we ask is did we have four Councillors who have previous Council experience (one of 20 years’ experience) and three Councillors new to the task, vote on and approve this December version when it was not in line with regulations and has incorrect figures? This Annual Report was compiled and presented with a lot of participation across the Council.

May News

This week’s 1-6 were Matthew Bradley, Josh Goodman, Grant Raven, Dylan Bray, Jackson Goodwin and Ayden Lee. Our senior boys rounded out the day, with a fairly new line up, led by Captains Mitch Goodwin and Luke Crowley. The boys did well keeping the score pretty close for the first half of the game, making for a good competition and an excited sideline. As with everyone else, the scores didn’t represent the effort these boys made and against a very tough Harcourt well established side. Our goal kickers in the seniors for this week were Mitch 2 Fisher 1 Max 1 Xav 1 and Toby 1 and our 1 6 were 1. Mitch Goodwin 2. Bailey Wingrave 3. Joel Fisher 4. Jayden Beqir 5. Xavier Ryan 6. Adal Zuk. Great games all round.
If you would like to help us out on the day, please let us know; you can contact one of our friendly committee members, me, or just swing by on the day and ask where you are needed. Every bit helps and we truly appreciate all we get.
As many will also know, we have a HUGE milestone in our club this week, with much loved Eagle, Ashlee Lierich celebrating her 250th game.
Congratulations Ash on your milestone game. It is a wonderful achievement and we cannot wait to celebrate it with Pleaseyou.come and cheer her on and help us make it a special day for Ash.
From a spectator and president’s point of view, it was fantastic to see so many happy faces around, despite the scoreboards. To be a part of a crowd cheering on our teams is something many of us have missed. Great job Congratulationseveryone. to our milestone makers for last week. Brianna Lovel played her 50th in our 15s and Serena Lanfranchi played her 100th game in our B grade side. Both girls are seen around the club and very valued members of their teams.
See you on the weekend at Deledio Recreation Reserve.
A lot is on for this week, with a wonderful raffle at the gate, we also have our iPod shuffle night on from 6:30pm organised by our amazing social committee, so hang around after the game for a fun music filled night

Next were our reserves boys, led by captain Dylan Bray, a new group consisting of a mix of long time Eagles and new, who have been training pretty consistently together you could already see a different look to the team. Again, the scoreboard didn’t reflect the changes and as a whole, the boys should be holding their head high, with lots of great things happening on the field. Our mix of players showed we are a competitive outfit who will improve week to week and always come away with something to work on.
This week sees us at home for the first time in 2022 and we as a club, cannot wait for our local supporters to finally be able to see what we can do out there. Thank you all for your patience, I know many have been itching to see us in action.

First up, thank you to everyone who came and enjoyed our season launch with us last Thursday night. We were lucky to have so many attending both senior and junior launches. Juniors did well and I would like to congratulate our ordinators, coaches and teams on presenting themselves so well and to those announced as captains. We were very spoilt with delicious pizza provided by Gold & Grain Café. Next up we had our seniors. Another congratulations to our co ordinator/manager, coaches, Captains and teams. Our seniors, as well as supporters and some sponsors were treated to a lovely dinner of pasta, together with some vegetables and chips, catered by the wonderful girls at Welcome Stranger & Co Café, who not only cooked us dinner, they served all of us and helped with clean Thankup.you to Councillor Liesbeth Long, who attended both our launches and not only got to meet the amazing people around our club, but also talked about our new building and the fundraising that needs to be done. It was wonderful to have you along Councillor, we hope you enjoyed your night.
Saturday saw some interesting games and I won’t talk too much about it, I will leave it to our Netball and Football departments to have their say.

It was fantastic to see our 14.5s out on the field for the first time in a few years. The boys (and girl) did a fantastic job out there against a strong Harcourt outfit. There was a lot of great passages of play and the group will come away with a few ideas on what to work on, but overall it was a great success, despite the scoreboard. 1 6 went to Isaac Scott, Liam Forster, Connor Owen Gale, Ned Crumpton, Zane Tyzack, Ben Raczynski. Good luck against Lexton Eaglets.

The completion of this mural has been part of a long time dream of well known local identity and PMAV President, Jason Cornish. We congratulate Jason on his vision and dedication in bringing this to fruition and look forward to hearing about his plans for future projects.
Embracing Dunolly’s heritage streetscape, gold history and art have come together in this eye catching mural, on the façade of the old Goldsearch building, originally the CBC FollowingBank.thediscovery of the Welcome Stranger nugget at Moliagul on 5th February 1869, by John Deason and Richard Oates, it was transported to Dunolly to be weighed and cut into pieces. Shortly afterwards, a photograph of the Deason and Oates families was taken to recreate the discovery and record it for posterity.

Talented Canberra artist, Biin Art by has magically captured the essence of this photograph over this recent long weekend, in a mammoth effort, at the same time happily fielding off questions from interested onlookers. Coinciding with the Tiny Towns Arts Trail, Biin had plenty of admirers of the different stages of his work, as locals and visitors to town were amazed at the emerging transformation of the iconic blue building.
