Trivia Night – a great success
A great night was enjoyed by almost 100 people at the Dunolly Bowls Club on Saturday 15th April. A trivia night was held in aid of the Dunolly Gold Rush Festival 2023. Jan Brock and committee did a fantastic job in organising the event. Michael Rayson was the jovial Emcee and Brian Phillips the gopher and raffle caller.
Everyone was in great spirits and the atmosphere was one of fun and laughter. I was privileged to be part of the winning team and received an enormous hamper which was divided amongst the table. The quality of the goods was superb. Thank you to the donors. The night generated a great result of $1500. A brilliant effort! The DTT did such a great job of putting it all together. If anyone wishes to become a member of the DTT, they would be most welcome.

Baking with Bella
Lemon and Poppyseed Muffins
These muffins are soft and delicious and a nice combination of sweet and zesty. I know it may seem strange to chill the muffin mixture overnight, but it produced taller and fluffier muffins. Give it a try if you have time.
Ingredients
2 cups (254 grams) plain flour
3/4 cup (150 grams) sugar
2 tablespoons poppyseeds
1 tablespoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon bicarb soda
1/2 teaspoon fine salt
1 cup milk (whatever type you like), at room temperature
1 stick (113 grams) unsalted butter, melted and cooled
1 large egg, at room temperature
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
1 1/2 tablespoons fresh lemon zest
For the glaze:
1 cup (125 grams) icing sugar
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
Method
1. Preheat the oven to 200°C. Line a standard muffin tin with paper liners or grease well.
2. In a large bowl whisk together the flour, sugar, poppyseeds, baking powder, bicarb soda, and salt.
3. In a small bowl whisk together the milk, butter, egg, juice, and zest. Pour into the dry ingredients and stir with a spatula until just combined. Do not overmix, there should be a couple streaks of flour remaining.
4. Either put the mixture covered in the fridge overnight OR divide evenly among the muffin tin cups.
5. Bake until golden brown and a toothpick inserted in the centre comes out clean and the edges are golden, about 20 minutes. Let cool before glazing.
6. Making the glaze: In a small bowl, combine the sugar and lemon juice with a spoon until a smooth and thick glaze forms. Drizzle or dip each muffin top with the glaze. Let set before serving.
7. Eat with loved ones or store in an airtight container at room temperature for 3 days. Muffins can also be frozen in an airtight container for up to 3 months.

PRUNING APRICOTS
It was so lovely to get back to the Community Garden this week after my short break.
When we arrived everyone was in full swing cutting down a rampant vine out the front of the kindergarten. The children told their teachers that they were interested in viewing the new house that is being built across the road. We were more than happy to help foster their curiosity.
Mick, Ric, Veronica, Kerry and myself worked for a good hour or more tidying up the front garden. In the end we had to borrow a couple of green waste bins from neighbours! We were lucky enough to have a couple of neighbours stop by and chat a while too.
Autumn time is such a great time to get stuck into some of these
big jobs. The weather at the moment is just perfect if you have an apricot tree that you'd like to prune.
Apricots are prone to bacterial gummosis and fare much better pruned in Autumn. The first thing to remember with any pruning is the three D's, Dead, Diseased or Damaged.
Once you've taken care of those, you can move on to removing any crossing branches. You also want to establish a nice open centre to allow adequate sunlight and air circulation into the tree canopy. Remove any branches that cross over each other.
Then it's down to thinning - if there are branches growing too close together or limiting light and airflow, they need to be thinned. Remember to leave some of that new growth as that wood will be where fruit next year forms in the coming years and will continue to fruit for around 4 years.
We have a few lingering tomato plants that are struggling, so next week we will be pulling those out. I have a few of my own that need pulling out as well. Last year I made green tomato chutney, but I don't think I've got enough for that this year.
We hope you'll visit us on a Thursday in the near future. No gardening experience needed!

Geoff had a football brain that is a couple of steps ahead of his peers. He readily out muscled his opponents with his sure skills and a long, accurate kick who loved kicking a goal. He moved well and played the game in a rugged, hard and fair fashion. In 1985 he won the Maffescioni award. the matches I found myself up against the Geelong captain Joe Slater. 1920 Grand Final:The magnificent work by M. Beasy in the ruck was largely responsible for Dunolly’s win, and following him closely was Polinelli, whose centre work was particularly good.

Register Your Burn
As Fire Danger Periods come to an end across the state, hundreds of Victorians are expected to take advantage of the cooler autumn conditions in the coming weeks to conduct private fuel reduction burns.
The Fire Permits Victoria website is the easiest option for Victorians to register their burn-offs with authorities
Landowners who plan on undertaking burns in areas not under fire restrictions are reminded that registering private burns is vital to community safety and keeping authorities up-to-date on all planned fire activity across the state.
Registering your burn-off allows authorities to crosscheck triple zero calls from the community about smoke or fire sighting and avoid firefighters being dispatched unnecessarily.
ESTA Director Operations
Andy O’Connell said “using the Fire Permits Victoria website to register your burn-off ensures ESTA’s fire call takers can focus on emergency triple zero calls.
“We’ve seen a high volume of non-emergency calls this week and expect similar numbers as Victorians undertake burn-offs ahead of forecast wetter weather.”
Register https://firepermits.vic.gov.au/ or call 1800 668 511.

Central Goldfields Residents and Ratepayers Assoc. Inc.
ANZAC Day, another successful Dunolly Country Market and Tiny Towns Art Trail are all now behind us.
A huge well done to the organisers, participants and volunteers involved across the board. Fantastic to see such devoted community spirit and we look forward to seeing this continue.
Tourism and community spirit is one thing which draws visitors to our amazing Shire, it is so heartening to hear positive comments filtering back. Keep up the good work.
After our ‘Coffee with the Mayor’ in February 2023, several Dunolly residents attended this most welcomed event, with a major issue to discuss around Council's planning for Flynn Ward. The Mayor gave an undertaking to reply. Several attempts (as reported to us) have been made to obtain a reply, and still no answer has been forthcoming.
At the February coffee meeting, the Mayor gave an undertaking to meet two months on and do a catch up. That proposed two-month period has now been pushed back to three months, apparently with an undertaking of more Councillors attending, and at an as yet undisclosed location and time. The Mayor requested that CGR&RAI give her at least three weeks’ notice in advance for her to at least read invitations to events. We do hope the Mayor
provides the same respect to the community. CGR&RAI recommends that any person who has concerns to raise with the Mayor or Councillors, consider emailing their question to the Mayor prior to the meeting, and if you are not able to attend for the answer, please forward it on to someone who is able to attend to hear the reply. Obviously Council's return communication is not a strong point. With Council’s planning services to now be outsourced to Melbourne, hopefully this will reduce a lot of the issues we have been experiencing for years. The Council report on this move was “It expects the process to be streamlined and make application more efficient.” Expects?
What form of study and research went into this move if virtually no information can be provided to the community, with a statement of “It EXPECTS?” Will any planning staff be retained at our Shire office? Will executive planning staff and CEO's salaries be reduced, due to works being outsourced? Will this move reduce or increase the cost of an application?
It is not wrong to ask Council or Councillors questions, and it certainly is not wrong to insist that you receive an answer.
Thank you and please look after each other.

Free Mental Health sessions for Local Football Netball Clubs
A great football netball club is more than its players, coaches, or premierships. Looking after the mental health and wellbeing of players and members leads to a stronger club both on and off the field.
The key for clubs in being able to provide a supportive environment, is having the skills and confidence to identify when someone is not travelling so well, have a conversation with them and support them to get help if needed.
Tackle Your Feelings is a free mental health training program for community AFL and netball coaches, as well as committee members and other club support staff. The program was inspired by mental health education developed for AFL professional coaches
and players, consisting of a face-to-face presentation from a local psychologist and additional online learning. Sports Focus have again partnered with Tackle Your Feelings, for the third year, to deliver the national program to the local football and netball clubs in Central Victoria. In 2022, the program was delivered to more than 2500 community coaches from 200 clubs across Australia and locally 10 clubs have already taken part with more booked in and ready to go in the coming weeks.
