International Women's Day (IWD) is a global celebration of the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.

Marked annually on March 8th, IWD is one of the most important days of the year to celebrate women's achievements; educate and raise awareness for women's equality and call for positive change advancing women.

IWD is about women's equality in all its forms. For some, IWD is about fighting for women's rights. For others, IWD is about reinforcing key commitments, while for some IWD is about celebrating success. And for others, IWD means festive gatherings and parties. All choices of activity can contribute to, and form part of, the thriving global movement focused on women's advancement.

In this week’s issue, we chose to mark the day by featuring our many and varied women in our Community, both young and old, from our past to the present - celebrating business owners, artists, pageant fund raisers, musicians, photographers and writers.

Locally, it is also a time for us to reflect on the role of many women in our community.

Many unselfishly volunteer to ensure that our most important community services continue.

In fact, without them, many community services which we take for granted, would cease to exist.

We are and should respect and be thankful for their unflagging community spirit. However, as many of them retire, having contributed so much through so many years – it is time for the current generations to “step up” by volunteering and help keep our community groups sustainable and thriving. Our community spirit is alive and well but we must ensure it continues for generations to come. Women of our community, we Thank you.

Dear Editor

TOMATOES ARE EASY!

I would sincerely like to thank The Welcome Record for the way they presented my birthday with input from my son Michael and daughter Jill evidently. Also, to the many calls and cards, I received very, very much.

The story behind that picture.. Regarding the drinking photo it brought back memories from about the mid 50’s of the trip to Lake Bolac with George Torney who had made his own speed boat from scratch powered by a 6 cylinder dodge motor and water skies which four of us learned to ski on. This was very uncommon at that time.

Laanecoorie Reservoir wasa very popular spot at that time. We were invited to come to Lake Bolac by a cousin of mine who lived there, to put on a water ski display at a gymkhana they were holding at a picnic ground near the Lake. However, it was that rough at that venue, we had great difficulty staying upright. The other side of the lake was very calm so we decided to shift over there as a few locals were keen to try this sport. Unfortunately, half the crowd followed us over there so the organisers of the day weren’t very pleased.

Dear Editor,

Come Spring, I have usually grown tomatoes from seed. It’s very exciting and the results are good.

I plant them in pots and have favourite spots to catch the sun. But I was lured by early plants in the shops and everyone knows you don’t plant before the ‘Footy finals’ are over!

Why not?”, I thought, get a step ahead so I started them in the shed as the weather was still unpredictable during last Spring. With two pots of Cherry toms, whom everyone says can’t fail and two other larger varieties - I watched and waited.

They were slow to move it didn’t look good! With bursts of heat then cool nights, Christmas passed then New Year and the plants lingered.

Come January, I decided it was time to tempt fate, so into the big outdoors, it was live or die time!

I think my cousin had a lean business that week. As it was pretty hard work (Ha Ha) my mate and I were having a well earned drink, leaning against George Torny’s Fargo ute, which was our transport vehicle and boat tower. Those were the days.

This International Women’s Day is all about celebrating women's achievements, raising awareness about discrimination, and taking action to reach equality.

I am endlessly inspired by the women I meet in our community every day. Women have always been the backbone of our rural and regional communities. They do so much for every club, committee, and community group. Over the years, women have been recognised more and more for their contributions in these areas and have taken on formal leadership roles, which has strengthened our community even more.

As the new Member for Ripon, I want to thank the extraordinary women of Dunolly for all that you do – including the farmers, teachers, nurses, disability support workers, business owners, volunteers, and more.

You juggle so much and do it all without want for recognition or praise, but because you care about others’ wellbeing and making our community a better place.

I hope you know that you’re valued and appreciated, and have a grateful community behind you.

Tiny flowers had started to appear and the nights were warmer which tomato plants love. They were on their ‘starting blocks’.

Then you guessed it! Listening to the ABC radio, a knowledgeable man said to pollinate your tomato flowers, use a bird feather to ‘spread the joy’. Noted on the calendar and six days later, the first fruit appeared - they are slow and small but I have tomatoes! Hurrah! They will go well with potato salad soon.

Dunolly Community Garden News

The weather was finally on our side on Thursday. It was sunny but fairly mild, a great afternoon to welcome a new member, Kerry!

Michael and I did quick introductions and left Kerry with Lisa, Rick & Anna.

Michael and I had brought a load of mushroom compost, with some of the money we raised at the Dunolly Country Market, so he brought in wheelbarrow loads to top dress our raised gardens. It's not necessarily the right time to be doing this job, but some of our beds are quite hydrophobic, so we are hoping that adding this compost and more organic matter to the soil will help.

Rick took care of our watering needs as well as helped Michael spread the mulch.

In what I'm sure feels like a neverending job, Anna continued on with those cupboards. Lisa & Kerry picked Nashi pears, pulled out some dying plants as well as watered.

Veronica brought in some eggs to donate, but also as a show and tell. One of her chickens laid the largest egg that any of us had

District s Dunolly branch. Mel Schodde supports her children to not only be proactive in their financial education, but also encouraging them to choose to make a difference by banking in their local community.

All three girls have a piggy saver account. Mia (12) and Taylah (10) have had theirs since they were four years old and Lucy (4) has had hers since she was a baby, given that Mel has worked at the Community Bank for almost eight years.

“We know that by having our kids’

accounts with the Community Bank, around 90% of every dollar does go back into the community,” Mel said. Mia & Taylah, as Dunolly Primary School students, do little chores around the house for money. Mel and husband Brad deposit an extra $5 a week into the girls accounts just as a bonus for them saving.

Mel said “Tay enjoys working for and saving her money, more so than Mia. So Tay does do regular deposits.”

Bendigo Bank’s PiggySaver account has been crowned the Best Children’s Saving Account for a major bank in Money Magazine’s 2023, Best of the Best Awards, announced recently.

My Dunolly Walks

Debris in the tar, how bazar

On one of my many walks

Around the town of Dunolly

There is often rubbish lying about.

Caught in dry grass or rubbish traps. Where rainwater flows

When there is a break in a drought.

The rubbish is varied. From paper to glass

Plastic items top the list. If one was keeping such a list

There is one item which is not to be missed.

On a corner in Inkerman Street

Lies the debris in the tar.

Tar softened by heat. exposing a mobile phone

Pulled apart – in pieces it lies.

Trapped, much as amber would be. This is a less valuable find, any archaeologist would see.

However, it is intriguing, How such a phone would be lying there

Should it be recovered?

In both senses of the word

Covered over again with more tar. Or extracted to be examined. Its owner to be found, give it back? Yet I feel It is better left underground In the tar.

Grants for Local Cemeteries

Six cemeteries across the Ripon electorate, will share in just over $60,000 in grants, to deliver upgrades and maintenance to our public cemeteries, ensuring these important spaces where Victorians reflect and remember those no longer with us, continue to be preserved.

Member for Ripon Martha Haylett said “These cemeteries play an important role in our local community – these grants will provide them with the opportunity to get much-needed upgrades.” These cemeteries are among the 50 cemetery trusts across the state sharing in this round of grants making an important contribution to the cost of cemetery infrastructure, amenities, maintenance, equipment and training.

The grants program provides financial support to help cemeteries – many of which are volunteer-run –continue to function as peaceful and welcoming places of remembrance for the whole community. The latest funding round will help secure the longterm future of these sites and provide them with the modern facilities expected by the community. Grant rounds are awarded twice a year, with applications for the current round closing on 31 March. Our little rogue

She is small and cute. A bundle of pure white. Totally confident that everyone she meets will like her. Anybody who pats her will be rewarded with a light leap and a cuddle on their knee. Even though she is elderly now she still bounces through bushes and onto chairs like a puppy, with complete confidence all will be well.

Shih Tzu Maltese cross terriers are very appealing with their white curly coats marked with a bit of black. But often they are not as friendly as their smiley faces suggest. A carelessly lowered hand might meet with an aggressive bark or a nipped finger.

Daisy is not like that, her happy smiley face really does reflect her friendly nature. Sometimes her lovely white coat is not so pristine. However, a romp through the garden or a vigorous game of scratch and sniff in damp mulch results in a very messy little terrier. Being built so close to the ground, particles of mud and dirt don't have to travel very far to get caught in her white curls.

Daisy is also very fond of ‘eau de bird ‘droppings, actively sniffing for them . When some are found, she energetically rolls in them, knowing full well that they are everyone's favourite.

Chicken necks are a problem as she tries to disguise them by burying them in mulch, then pushing more mulch over the hiding place with her nose. The result

Fortunately, she likes that too. Lucky, because there will be many more washes to come for this loveable little rogue.

Jazz Nights in Dunolly

Our Dunolly looks to establish itself as the heart of jazz in the Goldfields with regular jazz events at the Welcome Stranger Café and Co.

Last Friday, the Smith and Holliday jazz combo featuring Matt Bishop, Vinnie Bourke, Bruce Millar, and Melinda Traves paid tribute to the 20’s music of Bessie Smith and the ‘30’s sounds of Billie Holliday. A great night was had by all - well supported by locals and surrounds.

Stay tuned for more jazz to come.

Stories from Cynthia

Last week I wrote about the Special Friends programme at Dunolly Primary School and about my first protégé.

Another young student who made a great impression on me from our first meeting was in grade 4. Jo was the oldest of several siblings who were all halfbrothers and sisters, she had come into the world when her mother was a teenager, and every year a new baby appeared.

I decided to teach Jo to knit, making small baby blankets, then a patchwork quilt.

Once the patches started to mount up some of her classmates joined in for a sewing bee, helping to stitch all the patches together.

Occasionally Jo would call in to my house and we would sit on the verandah, knitting away like two old ladies.

We had cooking sessions, making little pizzas or cupcakes and when Jo presented them to her class, if there had been any slight mishaps, Jo would always put the blame on me.

She had lots of responsibilities at home with such a big family, but was a very go-ahead young person so I encouraged her to enter a local cooking competition, also a children’s art contest in which she did well.

Sometimes we went to the art room, where she showed much talent.

She and a friend also started a stall at the local market with things they had made and collected. One day she brought four of the little siblings to visit me; they were so polite and well-behaved with Jo in charge.

In her mid-teens, Jo succeeded in finding her birth father. He lived in a country town and was married with two children.

Jo eventually decided to live with her other family, finishing school there.

Eventually Jo found me on Facebook, through my granddaughter; she told my granddaughter I had saved her life.

That certainly warmed my heart and we now keep in touch. Jo now has a partner and recently gave birth to a baby boy.

She is also an apprentice chef; that must have been the inspiration from our little pizzas.

I certainly do count Jo as one of my successes and am so happy that she has found her niche in life.

I was sorry to hear that the Special Friends programme has since been cancelled as others also had similar rewards from their visits.

Central Goldfields Residents and Ratepayers Assoc. Inc.

On Monday 27th Feb 2023, our Mayor, Cr La Vella, held a coffee morning with Maryborough Councillors, from 10am to 12noon at the Bull and Mouth Hotel in Maryborough.

About 30 participants from around the Shire attended this event (10 from Flynn Ward) and this was a very well-participated-in gathering. Despite our Councillors claiming a united front, only the Mayor showed up. This event had been advertised for weeks prior, which we believe gave Councillors plenty of time to confirm or offer an apology. Grace continued and did a very creditable job. CGR&RAI would like to see this style of meet the Councillors in every town across the Shire.

There were two issues which raised quite a bit of interest.

One has been going on for several years and Council still have no answer at this stage. Planning Permit approvals see Flynn Ward permits taking way too long, yet Council appear to be passing microdevelopment and estates at will in the Maryborough area.

The second has again been over a year, Council reportedly are charging residents for services they are not receiving. When Council is asked for an explanation, Council ignores them. CGR&RAI has taken this to the ACCC asking for clarity as it is

something that Council appear not to be able to answer.

We ask everyone to check their rates and charges to ensure they are getting what they are being promised by Council. The answer is simple - communication and replying, not Council ignoring, then demanding that residents pay up.

With applications being submitted for approval by the Councillors, Councillors please gain a sound knowledge of what you are voting on and please support the applicant by having that sound understanding.

We understand there are staff issues across the State, but not all shires have the very bad statistics our Shire does. Why does our Shire have to be better at being worse than every other Shire, and then why is our community expected to accept it as the norm? The answer is communication, consistency, transparency and honesty.

We will finish on a positive note. Please support your local volunteer groups, support our Council and Councillors and help others.

We live in a fantastic shire and we need all, to work to make it even better.

Thank you and regards,

NEWS FROM DUNOLLY KARATE DOJO

Approximately a decade ago we ran our very first ninjas program in Dunolly and it was a huge success!

The program ran for many years, and we saw many of the little ninjas move up to the older class once they had out grown the program.

Numbers dropped off slightly prior to the pandemic, mostly from the kids moving up to the older class, but then once lockdowns and restrictions hit, our little ninja program ceased completely.

During that time, and particularly over the last 12 months we have had many enquiries about when and if little ninjas will start back up in Dunolly!

On Wednesday 1st March we ran a session as an "expression of interest" for Little Ninjas. Our goal is to run a couple of sessions to gauge running the program in term two!

We were VERY happy with the kids that came along to give it a try!! It was great to see them getting active, having fun, and even some new friendships forming - as not all the kids go to the same school together! It is fantastic seeing Karate bring people in the Community together.

Little ninjas will be back on next Wednesday 8th March - 5pm START! At the Dunolly R.S.L. Hall. If there continues to be enough interest we will run the program FREE for the whole of March! Registrations for term two will take place at the end of March.

Little ninjas is a great program for kids aged 5 to 7 years old (children can be older than 7 and still participate, depending on their needs). It is an introduction to martial arts and teaches them very basic karate, but most important, it gets kids active, builds confidence and teaches self defence and strategies to help with bullying.

At this age children are taught to avoid getting into physical fights, to seek help, talk to an adult they can trust and other strategies to help cope with confrontation. For more updates follow us on facebook DUNOLLY LITTLE NINJAS or for further

LAANECOORIE DUNOLLY CRICKET CLUB

Under 16’s semi final

Last weekend we travelled to Jubilee Oval in Maryborough to play Colts in a knock out semi final. Colts won the toss on Saturday and sent us into bat. At the end of the morning we were all out for 138. We came back on Sunday to find out who would progress through to the Grand Final.

In what was a great morning’s cricket, we were fortunate enough to hold Colts to 9/131 of 40 overs. It was a fantastic team effort from our boys. They will contest the Grand Final against Carisbrook at Jubilee Oval on Saturday, 18th and Sunday 19th, March.

young people for young people.” Named after batyr, (hero) the talking elephant from Kazakhstan, the charity aims to “smash the stigma surrounding menial health and empower young people to reach out for support. We help create communities that support young people’s mental health and wellbeing.”

The galaxy pageants focus on believing “all women are worthy of the chance to become the best version of themselves so, with this in mind, we welcome women of various backgrounds, body types, marital status and levels of experience to apply. “We pride ourselves in motivating our delegates to use their platforms to make a difference to those around them. Over the past decade, Australia Galaxy delegates have raised over $640,000 for our designated charities and have been encouraged to become active members within their communities through volunteering, fundraising and attending community events.” A wonderful role model, Rebecca kindly gave her time to attend the recent Dunolly Pool Party to help raise funds for our CFA. She is currently organising a Community BBQ Fundraiser for Batyr in Maryborough, date and details to be confirmed.

This year, the galaxy pageant is fundraising for Batyr, “a for purpose preventative mental health organisation created and driven by
