she was aware of his generous offer. “It’s a big ask for a community group to take on McDonald’s,� she said.

However, it’s understood that at least one lawyer who specialises in planning has advised the group that an appeal would likely be unsuccessful.

An application to appeal must be lodged with the Supreme Court before November 7.

Meanwhile, community resistance to McDonald’s continues.

Last Friday, locals met at Tecoma Primary School where the call for a peaceful protest was reiterated.

On Sunday, locals arrived at the site of the planned McDonald’s to find supporters of the fast food chain had set fire to signs and a tent in a now-famous community garden.

Later, more than 200 people joined local musician Brian Baker in singing a stirring protest song, Ballad for Tecoma, in the garden precinct.

Aboriginal elder Murrundindi also gave his blessing to the protest campaign.

Mrs Gale said the vibe at the garden was “fantastic�. A video of the performance is expected be uploaded to YouTube and shared in the coming days.

Residents have also written to celebrity chefs Stephanie Alexander and Jamie Oliver to ask for their support. In a letter of reply, Ms Alexander said she was ‘‘dismayed’’ that the community’s wishes not to have a McDonald’s built had been ignored.

Protest organiser Shakti McLaren said the fires appeared to have been lit by ‘‘angry kids’’ in favour of the restaurant. An administrator of the Yes to Tecoma McDonald’s Facebook page has written in support of the attack: ‘‘We are pro-anything that upsets you hippies. So burn garden, burn!’’ — with The Age

Robert Richter QC, who specialises in criminal and human rights law, has pledged his support to a campaign to stop the fastfood chain moving in. ‘‘I think it’s appalling that they’re trying to build a McDonald’s in a fabulous rural area,’’ he said.

Yarra Ranges Shire Council last week voted against appealing VCAT’s decision to grant McDonald’s a permit.

Mr Richter said he hadn’t ‘‘read any of the papers’’ but understood there was a team of lawyers looking at them. ‘‘Presumably if they find anything I might be able to help them later on,’’ he said.

Give drivers time to react Recently I have witnessed many dodgy intersection crossings. Is there enough time to vacate the intersection safely? If not, this will suggest that most red light offences have nothing to do with speeding but everything to do with collecting money. Furthermore, the current system is putting road users at unnecessary risk. I propose a simple solution to this problem without need for infrastructure changes or lights timing: for the last 2-3 seconds before lights change, the green light should blink, giving drivers extra time to respond, slow down and stop.

By introducing a green blinking light just before they change, drivers will have extra 2-3 seconds to react. This technology already exists and is used on pedestrian crossings so it would be inexpensive to implement and we already know how to use it.

Introducing it at the busy intersection of Ringwood Street and Maroondah Highway in Ringwood would be good place to start and evaluate.

Re: Box Hill TAFE sizes up Lilydale campus That’s all good — funding a feasibility study from the state government of feasibility studies. Maybe if

they hadn’t slashed funding in the first place we wouldn’t need it. Common sense tells us that if Box Hill is already shutting classrooms at its own facility it would struggle to run another campus without funding being restored. This also leaves the Lilydale campus without a provider and fails to address the issue of Swinburne receiving money from sale of the site.

Re: Lilydale campus ‘jewel’ must not be sold Our leaders have not lost sight of Swinburne’s vision although Swinburne has lost interest in the outer east. We must do everything possible to prevent the sale of the site. We must make our position clear to the state government that we will not support the sale or rezoning of the site that would allow redevelopment. Should Swinburne seek to walk away then so be it; we can not force them to educate our community. We will invite another provider and, failing that, the site must be reserved in its entirety for further education — a community ‘further education facility’ may be the answer. I will not support the previous council’s proposal of a function centre, accommodation and local govern-

ment area. Yarra Ranges Shire Council must play a role in this issue but ultimately take no part in the solution. There are plenty of alternative sites for those uses elsewhere in the Yarra Valley.

The Tecoma McDonald’s issue has problems so much deeper than economic and business matters.

There is its presence opposite a primary school, the demolition of buildings, a severe threat to the national park and, most concerning, that this will set a precedent for McDonald’s to push their way into sensitive environments in the future. A Google search will give you all the information you need on other towns, coastlines and national parks in exactly the same boat.

YARRA Ranges Council is in for a facelift after two councillors lost their seats in Saturday’s council election.

Former Billanook ward councillor Tim Heenan and Chirnside ward councillor Richard Higgins were out of the race by late yesterday afternoon. Maria McCarthy is set to become the new Billanook councillor, with 57.18 per cent of the vote after preferences were distributed.

Mr Heenan had 42.82 per cent after preferences. Before distribution, he had led the field of 10 candidates with 23 per cent of the primary vote.

It was a two-horse race in Chirnside ward, with new councillor Andy Witlox taking out 55.87 per cent of the votes, while Mr Higgins received 44.13 per cent.

Mr Witlox and Ms McCarthy will be among five new faces on the council after three sitting councillors — Graham Warren (Chandler ward), Jeanette McRae (Ryrie)

It proved a close contest in Chandler, where Jason Callanan appears to have just staved off John Nieman with 50.70 per cent to 49.30 per cent.

The numbers are just as tight in Walling ward — sitting councillor of 30 years Len Cox polled 50.93 per cent of the votes to Lisa di Battista’s 49.07 per cent.

Ryrie ward will have Fiona McAllister as its new representative, easily leading on preferences with 62 per cent of the vote.

Former councillor and mayor Jim Child will return to O’Shannassy ward, taking 56.95 per cent of primary votes. Existing councillors Samantha Dunn (Lyster ward), Terry Avery (Melba) and Noel Cliff (Streeton) were all easily returned.

HIGH-speed longboard skating on suburban Upwey roads may soon be stopped in some areas, with Yarra Ranges Council promising to take action.

Council officers will apply white dividing lines on Hughes Street, Upwey, because a resident of the street complained that up to 70 skaters congregated on the road in the evening and at weekends.

It is illegal to skate on roads with a painted dividing white line or where the speed limit is above 50 km/h.

Sergeant Simon Covelly, of the Knox police traffic unit, confirmed the existence of the law. ‘‘If there’s a dividing line in the road they can’t skate,’’ he said.

Concerned residents and the council hope that by changing the road rules in the area the skaters will be forced to stop.

Ron Woodward, a builder who lives on Hughes Street, said longboard skating was dangerous because the road was busy from traffic taking short cuts to the Yarra Ranges. ‘‘The skaters drift down blind corners on the wrong side of the road,’’ Mr Woodward said.

Australian Skateboard Racing Association vicepresident Dave Robertson said they advised skaters of the road rules via their website. But he said many skaters saw longboards as vehicles similar to bikes. ‘‘They are not looking to annoy people. Kids use longboards a lot more for transport.’’

Runner defies her doctor to take on the City2Sea

BY DAVID SCHOUT AS the boat took off, Pauline Newton felt pain as though she had broken her back and heard a snapping sound as loud as a gunshot. ‘‘I’ve had three kids, but that pain just didn’t compare to this,’’ the Chirnside Park mum says.

It was New Year’s Day this year, and a picturesque day on the Murray River had turned to disaster.

Mrs Newton was set to water ski, but when the boat took off her legs moved in opposite directions, tearing her hamstring off the bone. ‘‘I just remember screaming until I passed out in the water,’’ she says. ‘‘I wanted to cut my leg off.’’

She was taken to a nearby hospital in Mildura but could not be treated there so was flown to Melbourne.

She was hospitalised for 31⁄2 weeks, and bedridden for four months with a

90-centimetre scar down the back of her leg. ‘‘My hamstring needed to be screwed back onto my pelvic bone,’’ Mrs Newton says. ‘‘It took a long time and a lot of confidence to even start walking again.’’

As well as the physical suffering, the mother of three suffered posttraumatic stress as a result of the accident. She has now decided to compete in this year’s Sunday Age City2Sea event on November 11 as a way to both ‘‘feel normal again’’ and raise money to fight world poverty.

She had sponsored children in Africa until her accident forced her out of her work as a gym receptionist. ‘‘The driving force to do the City2Sea was World Vision. I’m very passionate about ‘making poverty history’,’’ she says. ‘‘But I also wanted a personal challenge to complete. My physio doesn’t really want me to do it, but I’m determined to finish. My sur-

geon said I’d be using a walking stick until Christmas, so I’m doing okay.’’

Mrs Newton will be attempting to finish the full 14-kilometre walk with her sister-in-law Irene and children Teanau, 17, Jake, 13, and Jorja-Lilly, 8. ‘‘I don’t care if I finish at midnight,’’ she says with a laugh. She’s taking part with the help of Chirnside Park sports store, which is fitting her with runners.

The course for runners, joggers and walkers starts at the Arts Centre in the CBD and finishes by the sea in St Kilda.

BY PATRICK HUTCHENS MORE than 50 unregistered weapons have been handed in to Maroondah police during this month’s firearms amnesty.

Victoria Police has called on people to hand in weapons throughout October, but Ringwood police’s property manager Gaye Bobbine says they’ll accept them at any time.

A batch of weapons including guns, knives and machetes was destroyed on October 22 and many more are expected to be handed in in the next few days.

Ms Bobbine said a lot of people might have kept relatives’ old guns. ‘‘One man received a gun in the 1960s as part payment for a job and had later forgotten about it. ‘‘Another man had a sword hanging on the wall of his bedroom for 20-something years.’’

It is illegal to possess a sword in Victoria unless an owner is registered with a collectors’ club.

A culinary journey through the Valley

BY PATRICK HUTCHENS A SIX-week food and wine tour of the Yarra Ranges, all in the name of work?

Sounds like wishful thinking — but for one mother-and-daughter team, it was the next step in their business venture.

Melbourne writer Jonette George and her daughter Daniele Wilton became entrepreneurs through a ‘gap in the book market — producing food and wine lover’s guides for regional areas around Australia.

Their latest is an exploration of the outer-east.

Their book, Produce to Platter: Yarra Valley and The Dandenongs, landed in bookstores on October 15 and is being stocked at wineries and cafes throughout the region.

It’s the latest in a series of similar books that started with Produce to Platter: Mornington Peninsula — which sold more than 20,000 copies — and was followed by focusing on Daylesford and the Bellarine Peninsula.

The pair spent six weeks travelling around cafes, restaurants and wineries in each region and

wrote a book that gives the reader a taste of the culinary delights and the local history. ‘‘It’s something that locals are really proud of and something that tourists can take home with them as a souvenir,’’ Ms George said.

The idea came when she and her daughters were living in Queensland and there was a downturn in the economy. ‘‘Mum was publishing up in Noosa when the financial crisis hit and we thought, why don’t we just go back to Melbourne?’’ said Ms Wilton.

Ms George also didn’t want her daughter working for a large marketing firm when she graduated, so the pair combined their skills to create their own business.

They are now planning Produce to Platter books for Tasmania, South Australia and off-thebeaten-track localities such as Kashmir and Malta.

Public housing waiting lists in the eastern region have fallen to their lowest level in four years.

State government figures released last week show there are almost 5000 fewer applicants on the waiting list than in September 2010. Housing Minister Wendy Lovell said a ‘‘proactive approach’’ had seen the waiting list fall to the lowest level since the September 2008 quarter.

The year 11 student at Ringwood’s Tintern School competes in traditional Scottish Highland dancing and has just returned from a performance in Scotland for more than 200,000 people.

Sarah travelled with 25 Australians who were hand-picked to train and then perform for three weeks at the famed Military Tattoo extravaganza.

This year’s event, held under the bright lights of Edinburgh Castle, was staged in honour of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

The Military Tattoo is held annually in Edinburgh and televised around the world to an audience of more than 100 million.

Sarah, who was introduced to the sport by her mother, described the Scottish experience as “amazing”.

“I spent the whole time with the group rehearsing and practising for the show,’’ she said. ‘‘The dance was a mix between contemporary dance and Scottish Highland dancing.”

For Sarah, this isn’t the first time she has travelled to dance — she’s flown to Sydney, Canada and Switzerland to perform.

Artist with a few tricks up his sleeve

BY DAVID SCHOUT AFTER Ry Thompson went under the needle for 13 hours straight in Taiwan, his passion for tattoo artistry only heightened.

That week the 40-year-old Ringwood tattoo artist spent 40 hours, in total, getting ‘‘inked’’. ‘‘It was pretty excruciating, but in the end worth it,’’ he says. ‘‘Here in Australia people get tatts for the sake of it, but over there it’s a right of passage. The tattoos have cultural significance and flow together to tell a tale on the body.’’

Mr Thompson has been in the industry for fewer than three years but has come to love his job, growing his client base at his studio, Ringwood Tattooing and Body Piercing.

He says he’s latching onto a booming industry.

Market research shows the tattoo industry in Australia has grown at a rate of 5.5 per cent in the five year to 2012.

An IBIS World study concludes that ‘‘the evolution of popular culture has lifted tattooing from underground scenes and criminal associations,

and focused on tattoos as a form of art and expression’’.

Mr Thompson says people don’t look twice at arms or legs covered in tattoos as they used to. ‘‘It’s the in thing to do at the moment and has become socially acceptable, although it’s still frowned upon in the workplace. ‘‘I think that will change. It’s an industry that is growing and I don’t see it stopping any time soon.’’

The adage that ‘‘if you get it, you’ll regret it by 40’’ is a fallacy according to Mr Thompson. ‘‘That’s just not true. People could say the same thing about having kids,’’ he says. ‘‘It’s the one thing that you can take to the grave.’’

Mr Thompson will be exhibiting his work at the second annual Tattoo and Body Art Expo at the Melbourne Convention Centre next month.

The expo runs from November 9-11 and features local and international artists displaying their work.

f it hadn’t been such a cool day forcing me to wear a cardigan that didn’t quite suit my outfit, it would have been perfect. The sky was cloudy, but with glimpses of blue, and we were less than 10 metres from the rails.

There was a flash of colour from the jockeys’ silks as their horses raced past in a thunder of hooves. No activity was more strenuous than strolling to the bookies to place a bet before returning to my picnic rug, warm glass of champagne and the company of friends.

That’s what a day at the country races is all about.

Melbourne’s love affair with racing has been well documented and long acknowledged — we even have a day off for a horse race — but over the past few years the popularity of a day at the races has exploded, particularly during the Spring Racing Carnival.

But the atmosphere has changed at the metropolitan meets. Racegoers aren’t necessarily there to see one horse take home millions in the race that stops a nation. It’s about the fashion, marquees, hook-ups and celebrity spotting.

But country racing is increasing in popularity — tracks are being upgraded, fashion competitions attract high-profile names and the horses run a decent race.

Racing expert John Rothfield — aka Dr Turf — says country racing is experiencing a resurgence, particularly at this time of year. ‘‘It’s been promoted really well, the facilities are really, it’s great for families and, instead of running their big cup days on a Tuesday or Wednesday, they’re now on a Sunday.’’

Rothfield says he has ‘‘always loved’’ country racing and, while often the quality of the horses may not be up to the standard seen at Fleming-

He says the benefits for business are great because of the influx of visitors. ‘‘In Avoca, there are just 400 people who live in the town but they attract about 8000 people to the Avoca Cup.’’ Cranbourne Turf Club chief executive and chamber of commerce member Neil Bainbridge agrees. ‘‘There’s no question that it’s outstanding for the town — racing in Cranbourne brings $100 million to the local economy and about 1200 jobs.’’

The Cranbourne training complex is the largest thoroughbred training centre in the southern hemisphere with 105 trainers based at the site and 753 stable hands.

Bainbridge said country races benefited surrounding businesses. ‘‘When you get about 10,000 people to an event, a percentage will stay overnight in the town, they’ll buy petrol from our stations and stock up on supplies at the shops.’’

Charlotte Littlefoot is a regular around the tracks — country and metropolitan — and organised the Myer Fashions on the Field at the Cranbourne Cup several weeks ago.

She says the country races are considered more ‘‘accessible’’ for a number of reasons. ‘‘There’s every age group, there is more space and it’s not

as packed as one of the big metropolitan meets.’’

In the fashion department, Littlefoot says designer labels, unique student designers and vintage Chanel won’t necessarily take out top prize.

And the ages of entrants ranged from 18 to late 60s. ‘‘You do get some serial entrants in country racing, but at Cranbourne this year a local girl took out second place, so that evened it out a little.’’

Littlefoot says the runner-up wore a vintage skirt and a simple black top — ‘‘it was just the way she put it together’’.

The seasoned racegoer says country fashion entrants often ‘‘create’’ part of their outfit with their own hands. ‘‘The lady who won made her hat — she bought it from an op shop, painted it and created a whole new style.’’

Littlefoot, who helps trains her horses as her day job, says the obvious difference between country and metropolitan meets is the horses.

John Rothfield says the quality of the races depends on the size of the venue.

The Geelong Cup — a group 3 race — had some big names competing last week due, Rothfield says, Rothfield to the venue and the fact it was just two weeks out from the Melbourne Cup. Other country race meets offer something completely different. Melbourne Cup day in the Yarra Valley will be celebrated with harness racing. Peter Goudie, 71, is a ‘‘retired’’ trainer —

who still trains horses — and has lived in the Yarra Valley for more than 25 years.

He’ll have ‘‘three or four’’ horses competing at the Yarra Valley racecourse next week and says there has been up to 15,000 spectators at Cup Day in previous years. ‘‘It’s become more of a social event,’’ Goudie says. ‘‘The horses are a bonus.’’

A Yarra Valley local, Goudie says the day attracts plenty of interest from the area — ‘‘you’ll bump into neighbours, maybe even a whole street’’ — but also gets plenty of visitors from Melbourne. ‘‘The weather definitely dictates how many visitors we get. A lot of people make the decision the day before.’’

He believes country races have a different atmosphere to the metropolitan racing days, like Derby, Melbourne Cup or Oaks days. ‘‘We’re more relaxed, it’s family-oriented and people feel happy to bring along their kids or grandkids,’’ he says.

On Melbourne Cup Day, there will be a designated family zone along the straight, children’s entertainment and free entry for children accompanied by an adult. ‘‘They definitely cater for kids — dad can take the kids to the kids’ zone and mum can relax.’’

John Rothfield says country races are also a natural magnet for Christmas parties and corporate events. ‘‘They’re a great idea because it’s during the day, so people don’t get too stupid and it’s something different.’’

As for the future, Rothfield is certain a day at the country races will become a regular for many racegoers. ‘‘It’s the country, so it’s relaxed. And it’s moving in the right direction — it’s really strong and really vibrant.’’

BY DAVID SCHOUT his year’s Maroondah Festival has a certain sporty feel and residents are encouraged to get their blood pumping with a range of bustling activities on November 11.

An ‘RACV fun and fitness area’ will feature sports clubs with come-and-try activities and a race for local waiters and bartenders.

Another highlight will be the festival’s inaugural mascot race, with furry and fluffy mascots of various clubs and organisations scurrying towards the finish line.

Maroondah director for leisure services Wendy King says parents and children are encouraged to get involved. ‘‘The area will have displays for many sports clubs with most hosting come-and-try activities for you to test out your skill — including calisthenics, fencing and boot camp. ‘‘There will be a traditional hakka perform-

ance and visitors are encouraged to join in.”

Festival goers have been urged to use Maroondah’s bike paths to get to Town Park on the day. There will be rewards for doing so. ‘‘People wanting to use active and sustainable transport to the Maroondah Festival will have the prime parking bays,’’ Ms King says. ‘‘An additional incentive is that the first 150 cyclists who use the service will get a free show bag.’’

Each year the festival attracts more than 20,000 people and organisers expect the same this year.

Besides the fitness area, patrons can enjoy amusement rides, market stalls, food vendors and chalk art drawings.

This year’s event includes a special Remembrance Day service and a minute’s silence to honour our fallen Diggers.

The Maroondah Festival runs from 10am-5pm on Sunday, November 11, at Town Park, Croydon.

Chasing the BReeZ The Subaru BRZ combines great looks and brilliant performance.

By ALISTAIR KENNEDY tâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not often that the entire Australian motoring media agrees on the merits of a particular vehicle, but such has been the case with the new Subaru BRZ. This exciting and affordable two-door coupe has gained rave reviews from just about everyone whoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s driven it, although sadly very few members of the public, and so potential buyers, have had that opportunity and wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have for some time.

High global demand meant that barely BRZ 200 models made it to Australia. Of these, about 50 were allocated to dealers as demonstrators meaning that demand was always going to heavily outweigh supply and all available cars were sold in just over three hours when they went on sale in July this year.

BRZ is built at Subaruâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Ota plant in Japan as a joint venture with the companyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s part-owner, Toyota, and it competes directly against its identical twin, the Toyota 86.

The division of labour between the two companies makes a lot of sense with Toyota looking

I

after the product planning and styling while Subaru in charge of its engineering development and production.

The BRZ breaks new ground for Subaru in that it has rear-wheel drive â&#x20AC;&#x201D; all its other Australian models have all-wheel-drive.

The Subaru coupe certainly looks the part with its low-slung styling and short overhangs. The front is dominated by a large, hexagonal grille with sweeping headlights and the rear is tall and square with an additional brake light positioned between twin large tail pipes.

Although there are four seats the rear pair are basically there for emergency use rather than for long-distance travel. The boot is quite small although the rear seatbacks do fold flat for extra storage space. Surprisingly for a car where space is at a premium, the BRZ comes with a full-size spare wheel.

Power comes from an all-new 2.0-litre turbocharged horizontally opposed petrol engine that generates 147 kW of power at 7000rpm and

205Nm of torque at 6600 revs. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve always loved the throaty sound of the Subaru â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;boxerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; engine. Both the six-speed manual and six-speed automatic transmissions were specifically developed for the BRZ. Our test car had the manual, a delightful short-throw unit that is fast and smooth and just asks to be used frequently.

With so few cars available Subaru adopted the unusual strategy of selling the BRZ exclusively

over the internet and with national driveaway pricing â&#x20AC;&#x201D; $37,150 for the manual and $39,730 for the automatic.

Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve left the bad news until last because, despite ongoing pleading with Subaruâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s head office decision makers, the worldwide popularity of the BRZ means that there could be a wait for up to a year before the next shipload arrives in Australia.

Fingers crossed that this isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t the case.

that. Nissan is remaining tightlipped on details of them. As previously, Pulsar will be sold in fourdoor sedan and five-door hatchback bodies. Both are larger than in previous Pulsar generations, with a strong emphasis on interior space. We havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t had a chance to drive them yet, but our seating tests of cars specially imported before the Sydney motor show showed them to have good legroom, headroom and width in the rear seat.

Norsemen sign premiership coach Knight

BY ROY WARD NORWOOD has made its premiership intentions crystal clear by signing former Noble Park premiership coach Denis Knight for the 2013 Eastern Football League season.

The 43-year-old coach will return to Melbourne in the coming weeks after spending several years living in Queensland and coaching in the Queensland Australian Football League with Broadbeach and Southport and spending a less successful stint with Labrador this past season.

The Norsemen announced Knight’s appoint-

ment last week. The former Bulls coach replaces Kevin Tibaldi, who was not reappointed.

The club won the minor premiership this year but lost out to grand finalist Vermont and premier Balwyn in the finals.

Knight said he knew his task was to take the Norsemen to the promised land. ‘‘It may only seem like a small step but going to that next level is certainly a bigger step than it looks. I’m definitely not going to turn the place upside-down. Kevin has done a fantastic job.’’

Knight said Norwood officials would handle the bulk of the recruiting for his first season, with several recruits on the verge of joining the club.

by ROY ASPINALL WE have now passed the halfway mark in the world’s greatest racing carnival and it is again proving an outstanding year.

The BMW Caulfield Cup Carnival was a top-class opening chapter for the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival, which culminates in the 56th running of the group 2 $351,000 Sportingbet Sandown Guineas (1600 metres) at Sandown’s Hillside track on November 17.

We have again seen a large influx of international performers seeking a share of the riches on offer, especially for the 152nd Melbourne Cup and prizemoney for that race of $6 million, plus $200,000 in trophies.

The visiting horses have already shown their influence on the carnival with Dunaden’s win in the Caulfield Cup, and then last Wednesday the John Gosdentrained Gatewood became the third successive international to win the group 3 $315,000 Geelong Cup (2400 metres).

Americain was successful in 2010 and then Dunaden followed up last year and both subsequently won the Melbourne Cup. Remember that Media Puzzle won in 2002 before his Melbourne Cup win and in 2008 Bauer won the Geelong Cup before being narrowly beaten by Viewed at Flemington.

Gatewood’s win at Geelong will greatly enhance his chances of a start at Flemington, but with just a one-kilogram penalty he’s still well down the list of qualified horses.

Last year his stablemate, Induna won at Geelong and was unlucky at Flemington, but Haymaker in 1974 is the last horse to win the Geelong Classic (then known as the Geelong Derby Trial Stakes)/ Victoria Derby double.

He completed his preparation on Saturday in the group 2 $235,000 Mitchelton Wines Vase at Moonee Valley.

The Starlight Children’s Foundation Norman Robinson Stakes (2000 metres) at Caulfield on October 20 has always been a good guide to the Victoria Derby and the winner Hvasstan impressed.

Saturday also features the group 1 weight-for-age $1,002,500 Longines Mackinnon Stakes (2000 metres), which will see many horses having their final start before the Melbourne Cup. The Spring Racing Carnival concludes on November 17 with Sportingbet Sandown Guineas Day on Sandown’s Hillside track.

A playing senior coach in the Bulls’ 2003 and 2004 premierships, Knight has played in the Victorian Football League, South Australian National Football League and the Tasmanian Football League.

He said the Norsemen had attracted him by the growth of the club on and off the field. ‘‘The excitement comes from where the club is at, where it hopes to be. Not just next year but longer term.’’ ‘‘I’m talking about the things that are happening off field — their junior system is fantastic. ‘‘They want to get better and achieve things.’’

Building a team, and knee NEW Chirnside Park coach Leigh Horsburgh knows what it’s like to get knocked down by injury and get back up.

Now he hopes to lead his Panthers up off the canvas and into the next Eastern Football League division 3 season.

The 27-year-old was announced as the Panthers’ coach last week, replacing Brett Davidson, who will coach Waverley Blues in division 2 next season.

After a distinguished playing career with Cranbourne, Stony Creek and Buln Buln, Horsburgh will come to the Panthers as a nonplaying coach.

He suffered a serious knee injury this past season and has yet to get it repaired.

“I’d like to be playing but I need a knee reconstruction, so I’m pretty much retired,” he said.

“I’m probably not going to get it fixed any time soon. It’s too hard being a playing coach now; it’s not the easiest thing to do.”

Playing assistant coach Anthony Bernardo will join Horsburgh at the Panthers, having previously played with Noble Park juniors, Narre Warren, Springvale Districts and Buln Buln.

Horsburgh said, in his opinion,0 the Panthers had a solid list, one which looked good this season until hit by serious injuries.

He said he wanted to build up the side from within and put a strong, fit team on the park next season.

“I reckon from what I’ve seen last year they started like a house

“Those injuries were broken legs, hurt knees, etc – I think the core group is pretty good and I look forward to working with them.

“The under-19s only won one game, but if we can get the best out of the kids then hopefully we will get three or four of them playing senior footy.”

Horsburgh also wants to build depth at the club and create competition for places.

“With footy clubs, to reach your best you need the bottom five players in the side always under pressure from blokes in the twos,”

he said. “That way you have to play good footy.

“So we need to create a bit of depth and we need 50 blokes, quality blokes, not just 22 players in the senior side.”

Horsburgh is based in Cranbourne at present, but his partner’s family is in Ringwood so he could be moving closer to his new club.

He said the Panthers as a club had all the tools for success.

“The off-field side of things really attracted me,” he said.

“They have a good system in place; the club is set up well and has good people.

“My job is to create a successful side on the field.”

Bulls hang in tough to post top win against the Sharks NORTH Ringwood’s batsmen haven’t always had the reputation for being strong under pressure.

But in their clash with reigning premiers Warranwood in the RDCA Lindsay Trollope Shield on Saturday, the Bulls recovered from 6-60 to pass the Sharks’ modest score of 112.

After Daniel Humphrey (31) anchored much of the innings, wicketkeeper Evan Jones and playing coach Jeton Rexhepi (40) came together for a seventh-wicket stand which took the Bulls past 100 and within reach of victory. Their partnership ended and the Bulls finished play on 123.

Rexhepi said his side hung tough when the pressure was on. ‘‘Warranwood bowls very tight lines,’’ he said. ‘‘They had a lot of depth in their bowling but overall our headstrong play got us over the line. ‘‘We have tried to get the batsmen to back themselves and play shots, never try to get ourselves bogged down. ‘‘But it seemed to work the opposite way throughout this game. ‘‘Evan Jones’ positiveness did get us over the line.’’

Rexhepi said his side wanted to improve its performance in pressure matches. ‘‘It’s interesting — one of the things

the guys did say after the game was that in a lot of the tight close games we used to struggle to gain a positive attitude towards the end and kill sides off,’’ he said. ‘‘But we got the win this time.’’

The Bulls play Ainslie Park next and Rexhepi is expecting another close match. ‘‘It’s always interesting to face sides who have just come up,’’ he said. ‘‘They come up all gung-ho and not fearful of anything.’’

South Croydon’s 9-244 declared was just enough to hold off Wantirna South.

After his side lost l 3-46 early, Cameron Smith (73) held the Devils’ innings together, but with his dismissal wickets fell at regular intervals and they were all out for 219.

Glynn James (3-51) and Travis Degenhardt (3-66) did the damage for the Bulldogs.

Croydon North’s Chris Noy (93 not out) and Ryan Hayres (47) put on 99 for the fourth wicket to have the Knights ahead of the run rate chasing Mooroolbark’s 5-270.

With the fall of Hayres’ wicket at 150, Matt Whittaker (5-37) made it hard for the remaining batsmen who could not stay with Noy and they were dismissed for 237.

Bowlers cut a swathe in Strachan round

BY CHRIS ANDERSON IN the opening two rounds of the YVCA’s DJ Strachan Shield one fact has become clear: teams have to take their chances.

For Mt Evelyn and Seville, the two clubs will be experiencing different ends of the fickle nature of cricket.

For the second week in a row, the Blues will be counting themselves lucky to escape with two close fought wins, while the Rovers will be ruing two lost opportunities.

Mt Evelyn won the toss and elected to bat.

After an early onslaught from opening bowlers Ishi Amarasinge and Matt Tilney, captain Kane Jones (47) and Shane Luck, although scratchy, managed to steady the ship and give a base for the visitors to build on.

The wicket of Jones immediately after drinks put a huge dent in the Rovers’ ability to put on runs and despite batting most of their overs, 125 looked a little short of a pass mark.

And short it looked as Seville openers Leigh Atkins and Scott Rackham looked relatively comfortable in taking the score to 60 without the fall of a wicket.

Three quick wickets either side of the drinks break turned the game as an inspired spell of bowling from Luck and Jones slowly but surely tipped things in Mt Evelyn’s favour.

With some toing and froing, it came down to the last over and with 10 runs to get, a couple of lusty blows from the bat of Burns quickly finished off the game and Seville escaped with the points.

Healesville rectified their agonising round three loss with victory against Woori Yallock.

For the second week in a row, the Bloods gave their followers plenty of grey hairs and heart palpitations as they struggled to chase a low total.

Woori Yallock opened proceedings and struggled to be all out for 106 with no batsman making any real impact on the scoreboard.

Chance Burridge (3-35) impressed again with his ability to get key wickets while supported by the ever-reliable medium pace of former captain Steve James (4-29).

In reply, the Bloods coughed and spluttered as they nearly made a meal of the chase.

Hard-working Tigers all rounder Simon Young put the screws on the innings early, and at

no stage did the visitors look at ease chasing.

A bright cameo from Mark Powell (30) kept the Bloods’ noses in front and they managed to do what they couldn’t a week ago —secure victory in a tight contest by one wicket.

Hoddles Creek are fast becoming one of the more admired clubs around the association after a hard-fought win against Yarra Junction.

Having battled away from home last season, early season rains have made their home ground unplayable. With limited practice facilities, compounded by injuries and players leaving, the Wombats have had a less than ideal preparation for the season.

Yarra Junction batted first, and in a continuing trend across the association, failed to bat out their allotted overs.

Young gun Trav Nightingale was the mainstay of the innings with 38, and despite not batting out the overs, 121 would be a tough total to chase on the well-grassed Yarra Junction oval.

Quick Nick Bark impressed with 3-14, while Simon Garside (3-19) kept things tight.

In reply, the Wombats battled hard for points against an Eagles bowling line-up intent on securing the home side’s first victory this season.

Spinner Daniel Lever (3-26) and youngster Quentin Hodgkinson (2-17) ensured the Eagles were always in the contest. However, a determined effort with the bat from Garside (45) ensured his all-round efforts were rewarded with victory for his side with two wickets remaining.

The blowout for the weekend was the clash between Coldstream and Warburton-Millgrove, as the defending premiers flexed their muscles for the second week running and made short work of the Burras.

For the second consecutive week, the Crocs batsmen looked the most assured of all Strachan Shield teams as they posted a significant score of 9-159.

Opener Stephen Phillips was the Crocs’ mainstay, being the innings’ anchor with a classy 61.

The Burras’ woes with the bat continued as they never looked in the contest and were quickly disposed for 66.

Relative unknowns to the competition Carl Dikshei (4-35) and Harry Burnett (3-7) made short work of the home side and ensured that Coldstream will be the team to beat as its depth and multiple contributors make it the complete side.
