FIRST PERSON

I am Emma Lynch … and I work high above the ground I was in marketing before becoming a ropeaccess technician. I’ve always been an active person, but I just needed a change in scenery. At this company (Vert Industries), we do lots of different things, not just window cleaning. Painting and just general building maintenance, so a lot of leak detection issues and pretty much anything people can’t reach from the ground. We’re on ropes; we rarely work off platforms. We wear a full body harness and two ropes, so you’ve got a main working line and a back-up safety line. It’s almost like an apprenticeship. You start at level one, that’s a week’s course – and then you need 1000 hours and a minimum of 12 months’ experience to progress to level two. And then there’s level three, which is the most advanced riggers. It’s pretty safe. We don’t really get “danger money”. I wish, is the short answer. Everyone would be doing it otherwise, I think. The tallest building I’ve done was 70 storeys, or about 230 metres. When you’re there up that high it’s peaceful and quiet. You get beautiful views of the bay. The toughest bit is the physicality of some jobs. Each building’s different with the way you have to approach things, in terms of reaching. Reach is probably the most physical part of what we have to do. You’ll set up for a drop but you have to try and reach as wide as you can – obviously to reduce the amount of drops you do on a building. We start at the top and abseil down. How do we get back up? People presume we would climb back up, but we don’t. We use lifts or we use gravity. You’re generally two to three hours on a drop. It gets quite uncomfortable in the chair, and physically demanding on your back and hips if you’re there for say more than three hours. Once I had this guy sprint towards the window. I was bracing myself, as I didn’t know what he wanted to do. But he was just eager to say hello. This job tends to attract people who are adventurous and easy-going. It can be mentally stressful, some parts of the job, and figuring your way around a building, so you have to be a little more laid-back. Some people look at us and think we’re crazy and they’d never do it in a million years. But we do feel lucky; it’s a pretty cool job. ●

The editor’s desk THEWEEKLYREVIEW.COM.AU On Instagram, I generally skim past snaps of acai bowls balanced on enviably trim legs (to protect my self esteem) but lately, I am pausing – with equal envy – on the shots of fluttering linen curtains on cabanas and cocktails balanced on the lip of azure pools. TIRED OF THE BONE-CRUNCHING CHILL OF BITTER WINTER? TIME TO ESCAPE. PETER WILMOTH SHARES THE MOST REJUVENATING HOT SPOTS.

Spice Islands

FEEL the HEAT

Yes, they are as exotic and magical as they sound. Janet DeNeefe, the queen of Ubud who moved from Melbourne to Bali more than 30 years ago, has taken her famous hospitality skills to sea. I was lucky enough to join Janet as she hosted an extraordinary boat trip to the fabled Spice Islands, the scenes of bloody battles three centuries ago between the English and the Dutch over control of the highly lucrative market for nutmeg and other spices. If you love history and food – and you’re keen for an adventure on the open ocean – you will relish this trip. With a small group, it will take you to still extremely remote places with the knowledge of history and, of course spices, shared daily by the redoubtable DeNeefe. The area today seems as remote as it was when in 1667 the Dutch swapped the tiny nutmeg-rich Run Island for Manhattan, which the English happily accepted. The visit to Run Island – about three kilometres long and one kilometre wide – is poignant in witnessing the simple life its residents enjoy, and its fascinating place in history. The trip is immersed in history. The boat sails through the Banda Archipelago, a network of small islands once the world’s only source of nutmeg and mace. But there are also wonderful meals shared on the boat, and some in hand-picked restaurants on the islands. There is also some superb snorkeling. A truly once-in-a-lifetime experience, and a chance to visit a part of east Indonesia you otherwise may never get to see. ● Spice Islands Tour from Ambon to Banda Neira, Indonesia, with Janet DeNeefe, from November 10-18. Nihi Sumba Island This extraordinary experience is on the list of every surfer with the dream of escaping the crowds in the water (the excellent surf break is reserved for guests). On the remote Nihi Sumba Island in south-eastern Indonesia – a 50-minute flight from Bali – the various styles of villas are set right on the famous left-hand wave, known locally as “Occy’s left” after the Australian former world champion Mark Occhilupo. It’s a piece of coast with a reputation as one of the best left-hand breaks in the world. But the wave has been described as “double overhead on an average day”, so it’s not for beginners,

Bali To the more than one million Australians who visit Bali each year, there’s some news – there’s a new kid in town. It’s Malaysian full-service carrier Malindo Air, and I experienced the first flight on the new MelbourneDenpasar route on June 8. Malindo Air has taken up the route vacated last year by Tigerair, and will offer strong competition to Jetstar. We landed happily in Denpasar to access a list of hot Bali entertainment options; some new

although a surfer friend has told me “regular” surfers can usually find a wave that’s not too challenging. Nihi Sumba is more than a luxury resort, it’s a “culturally immersive enclave” encompassing active adventure, “barefoot luxury”, superb food from their own gardens and a beach club. Activities include fishing, horse riding, yoga and wellness, a spa and kids’ activities. Some villas are close enough to the beach that you can check the surf break from your bed. The “Kasambi” villa is the one you might consider – it overlooks the wave and is regarded as the surfer’s “villa dream”. ● Nihi Sumba ● nihi.com

and some older favourites. Try Bikini restaurant, the next venture of Melbourne-born restaurateur Adam McAsey, who opened the everreliable Sisterfields cafe (next door) in 2014. The two share a courtyard dining space. Another ex-Melburnian Maurice Terzini has Da Maria (pictured), a fun and funky modern Italian, part-osteria, part-pizzeria, part-bar, that features a DJ each night after 10.30. Da Maria is a collaboration with Sydneysider Adrian Reed, who has the party-time diner Motel Mexicola.

Finally, I get to fill an embarrassing gap in my visits to the world’s great cities – by experiencing Hong Kong. All those endless images of stunning cityscapes towering over Victoria Harbour have to be seen for yourself. The new Murray Hotel in Central is the perfect Hong Kong kick-off spot. With its deluxe rooms and ideal location (between Garden Road and Cotton Tree Drive), the Murray has been transformed from an office building into a luxury destination. We move at a fair clip through the best of Hong Kong. Lunch at Mott 32, a contemporary Chinese restaurant in Central, is in that category, as is Ho Lee Fook, a more casual funky Chinese kitchen. Access the views of Hong Kong through rooftop bar Sevva (10 Chater Road). Take a trip on one of the last remaining traditional Chinese junks and watch A Symphony of Lights, the multimedia show that dazzles the harbour every night. We are taken on a tour of Sham Shui Po on the Kowloon side, one of the earliest developed areas in Hong Kong and now an emerging neighbourhood where modern cafes sit alongside traditional eateries and

Bali in the ’80s was a party island but has evolved into serious culinary destination, and Terzini’s new place has developed a strong following. Still abuzz is Saigon Street (in Petitenget) serving delicious casual Vietnamese and a visit to Mama San in nearby Kerobokan is imperative. ●

● Peter Wilmoth travelled to Hong Kong courtesy of the Hong Kong Tourism Board, to Bali courtesy of Malindo Air and was a guest of Janet DeNeefe on the Spice Islands tour.

Dream believer T

racy Grimshaw will never forget the day in 1981 she walked into the Channel 9 newsroom in Bendigo Street, Richmond, surrounded by people such as Brian Naylor, who she had always looked up to. She grew up watching “the box in corner”, and she was starting a dream job as a television reporter, in what was a male-dominated world. The name Grimshaw was on the staff roster, and many of the other journalists at the time just presumed it was a man. But there was one man who welcomed her with open arms, and she will always be grateful for it. “I knew nothing,” Grimshaw says. “I had done a fast-track cadetship in a suburban newspaper in two years, and I was ill equipped to start in the top-rating news station in the city. But Peter Hitchener walked up to me, and said ‘hello, you must be new here’, and I said ‘Yes, my name is

Tracy’ and he introduced himself and said welcome. “He had no idea who I was. He made my life, let alone my day, that day. He is as warm now as he was to me that day, that’s just who he is,” Grimshaw says. Fast forward almost 40 years and both Grimshaw and Hitchener are a force for Channel 9 Melbourne in that all-important 6-7.30pm primetime slot. Grimshaw’s A Current Affair is an underrated ratings juggernaut, rarely out of the top-10 nationally rated television shows since she started as host in 2006. She has had a long, successful career, starting as news reporter, later newsreader, to hosting Today for 10 years until 2006, first with Steve Liebmann and Karl Stefanovic for one year, and now ACA. There is one blip – in 1995 she hosted Midday with David Reyne, with no TV band and a reduced budget, after the heady days before her when Ray Martin was host. The job lasted nine months. “That wasn’t a stellar moment in my career, but it taught me to work with a live audience,” she says. Now, Grimshaw has her first, and well-overdue, TV Week gold Logie nomination. She will be up against Love Child and The Wrong Girl actress Jessica Marais, host of the now-axed Family Feud Grant Denyer, Andrew Winter of Selling Houses Australia, Amanda Keller of The Living Room and Rodger Corser of Doctor Doctor Doctor. The Logies ceremony will be held at the Gold Coast on July 1. Channel 9 campaigned hard for

her to be nominated. “I was absolutely gobsmacked,” she says. “I didn’t know the network was going to do that campaign for me. I have been with the one network for 37 years, and I am not exaggerating when I say it has a family feel to it. I have been offered jobs at other networks ... but Nine make it easy to stay.” A Current Affair is also up for the most outstanding news coverage or public affairs Logie for her interview with Don Burke, the night that Fairfax Media and ABC broke the story about his bullying and sexualmisconduct allegations. “I am still loving it,” she says.

““A A Current Affair still presents me with a challenge; every new interview is a challenge, and every person and story are different.” Born and bred in Melbourne, Grimshaw now calls Sydney home – where ACA is filmed. Outside work, she treasures her dogs and horses. “The horses and dogs don’t give a rat’s ass what I do all day; the expectations are pretty simple and I do like that simplicity when I come home,” she says. ● TV WEEK LOGIES \ Live voting for gold/most popular categories reopens June 29 and closes at the end of Nine’s red-carpet telecast.

Icebreaker? Dealbreaker

H

ello there. I’m Nath Valvo – I’ve lived in Melbourne since birth and I tell jokes for a living. Saying hello to you – a stranger – isn’t something I do often. I don’t think many of us do. Question: Are Melburnians snobs? Maybe snob is too strong a word, but I can’t help but notice a huge bunch of us would hate nothing more than small talk with another human being, especially our neighbours. Tad depressing, yes? In my early 20s I lived southside. Five years in St Kilda without a word to a neighbour. I didn’t even talk to my housemates (found ’em on the internet). The three of us would communicate in a WhatsApp group –

often, we’d all be in our own bedrooms talking via text. Snobbery was taking place inside our own home, let alone the driveway. Then I moved northside. The hippies, arts students and nonnas are no different, it seems. A few years in an apartment block and nothing but a few classic awkward elevator ice-breakers – “Level three? Thanks” or “It’s really coming down out there” or “Cute dog.” The building was evacuated once. Even at 4am – with hundreds of us scattered across gutters in our pyjamas – not a word was said. My boyfriend Cody (he’s really hot – stop mentioning it) and I have just moved again. Still northside but

a new street and new neighbours. It’s been a month and not a single friendly word from anyone. If this were a movie, we’d have received a welcome basket from a gossipy neighbour. Sadly, we’re still waiting. Someone left a note on my windscreen last week, saying: “You park like a dickhead”. Does this count as a chat? Sitcoms have taught us that next-door neighbours should be hilarious characters – popping their head over the fence with some great zingers. In reality, you’re lucky to get a g’day on bin night. Hearing a knock on my door is so rare these days, my initial instinct would be to hide. “Why is someone knocking on the door?” “Is someone on fire?” “I haven’t ordered Uber Eats. Quick, Cody. Hide!” Maybe I’m completely wrong and your street is full of hilarious chats and cupcakes on doorsteps. But in my street no one is talking to anyone, which is fine with me. OMG, am I a snob? ● Comedian Nath Valvo is touring Australia with his new show, Show Pony Pony, and plays Sydney in August. Nath joins us with his new column every fortnight.

ARTISAN RESIDENCES \ TRANSFORMING THE DOWNSIZER LIFESTYLE

I

n a remarkable migration, empty-nesters are increasingly trading suburban blocks for inner city convenience and connection. Recognising how emptynesters aspire to live, YarraBend’s latest release Artisan Residences offers 28 downsizer-tailored residences, within a vibrant, new, new inner-city gourmet precinct in an idyllic riverside location 6.5 kilometres from the city. Transforming the way people live, work and play is a central principle in Glenvill’s development of YarraBend, a 17-hectare masterplanned community on the Yarra River at Alphington. The Artisan Precinct is the community’s social pulse, surrounded by Melbourne’s best artisanal culinary offerings, an exclusive recreation facility and parkland. Innovative residential and hospitality architects DKO and Techne created the Artisan Precinct around cafes, gourmet delis, bars and restaurants selected by Melbourne chef-restaurateur Scott Pickett lining laneways opening to a central square and park. The architecturally striking precinct pays homage to the site’s industrial history. Strong steel grids wrap buildings with circular cut-outs revealing residence balconies and lush vertical plantings. Architect Koos de Keijzer, founding partner and principal of DKO, says downsizers are becoming far more discerning, seeking to retain features of the home they’re leaving while adding lifestyle upgrades and social conveniences. To achieve ideal downsizer living, de Keijzer says DKO converted a house plan to an apartment to create generous new homes with larger living and full-sized kitchens. Three penthouses have large, internally accessed roof terraces; other residents share an expansive rooftop for relaxing and entertaining. All have innovative appliance and gadget hubs to store and charge devices. Some layouts include walk-in wardrobes, study zones, separate laundries, freestanding baths or double vanities. “We call them apartment houses with all the features of your current house in an apartment.” The Artisan Precinct is also home to The Hub, a three-storey facility for YarraBend residents with a co-working floor, a chef-quality kitchen, dining areas, lounge spaces, pool table, bar, cinema and rooftop entertainment terrace. ● LIZ MCLACHLAN

The age of reason TRAIN SMARTER, NOT HARDER, AS THE YEARS PROGRESS

I

often see clients who were once in amazing shape but, as they have aged, they quickly realise that doing what they have always done isn’t enough to stay as lean and healthy. This all comes down to a little thing I call “the sneak-up factor”. As a general rule, this talks about your metabolism slowing down about one per cent each year from your 30th birthday. Sounds scary, right? Never fear; I’m still a firm believer that when it comes to weight loss, your age shouldn’t define your success. I have witnessed first hand from the thousands of success stories on my program that weight loss can happen at any age, and one thing I’ve learnt is that some factors will benefit some age groups over others. As a 38-year-old, for me it’s now about training smarter, not harder and being far more educated when it comes to what I put in my mouth. So, with that in mind, here are a few tips that I’ve learnt from my 28ers of all ages on my program.

GEN Y \ Ah, millennials. Whether it’s work, kids or

both, this is a flat-out time in life, where you often feel like there’s barely a second for yourself. Weight gain is common in these years, with less opportunity to exercise and a tendency to reach for convenience food. My advice is to ensure you are getting the right balance of complex carbs, fats, protein and veggies by preparing meals and becoming friends with the freezer for when you’re especially time poor. When it comes to training, I always tell my busy Gen Y clients to focus on shorter, intense workouts rather than focusing on volume – and home workouts are a great way to do this (particularly if you have kids). Think about including incidental exercise into your routine, like walking to work rather than driving and taking your meetings on foot. GEN X \ For the Gen Xers out there, your peak bone mass will have begun to decrease so you need to make vitamin D and calcium a priority. Think about getting these from a variety of food

sources, other than just dairy products, and get your vitamin D from some good old-fashioned sunshine. Including strength training in your routine will maximise these nutritional intakes, so I’m always telling my Gen X clients to mix it up with anything from Pilates to yoga, to strength training at home or in the gym. As I always say: don’t resist the resistance. BABY BOOMERS \ The bad news for Baby Boomers

is, with a slower metabolism you may need to slightly reduce your overall food intake. The good news? With, hopefully, a bit more time on your hands, you will have plenty of opportunities to be active. I believe that staying active in this phase of your life is an absolute necessity and when we do this we can kick back with a nice glass of red to celebrate, because God only knows we’ve earnt it. When it comes to nutrition, just keep up the vitamin D and calcium for bone strengthening and make sure you’re eating nutrient-dense food. ● ● 28bysamwood.com

FEATURE HOUSE KANGAROO GROUND \ 245 KANGAROO GROUND-WATTLE GLEN ROAD 5

ou can bound around this Kangaroo Ground property until your heart’s content. Along with enough land to keep your thighs terrific, the 10-acre allotment offers a huge house, pool and tennis court. When you might fork out similarly these days for an off-the-plan, city apartment, here’s an opportunity for immediate lifestyle satisfaction with that therapeutic, tree-change factor. The prospect of having it all inspired the owner-builder, who bought the property in 2012 and rebuilt on the existing residence. Expanding its parameters, remodeling outdoor areas, putting the pool in, refurbishing the tennis court and extending the garaging to accommodate six cars, he’s turned a demure retreat into a glamourous haven. The house is set towards the front of the block. Rock up the drive to a striking render, timber and stone facade. Inside, continued use of stone and timber contributes to the quintessentially contemporary design. Angled ceilings create interest overhead, and expanses of glass aid the easy passage of natural light. You’ll find a lounge and a media room heralding the study and bedrooms to the right of the foyer. Buffered strategically by the study, the main bedroom has two walk-in wardrobes and a spectacular en suite with freestanding bath, twin stone basins atop a timber vanity and glazed connection to a covered courtyard with Tarzanand-Jane-style shower. To the foyer’s left is the expansive kitchen, dining and family area. Luxe in creamy stone and stainless steel, the skylight-endowed kitchen has a chic, pro feel that’s offset by a stone-mounted, wood fireplace in the family zone. Several rooms open to the rear deck. Wrapping the rear of the residence, this deck burgeons to become an indoor/ outdoor extravaganza. With a covered section housing a kitchenette and pizza oven, expanses of sun-loving space meeting the glass-fenced pool and a swim-up bar in the enormous, freestanding rumpus room, you’re leaps ahead in the pool-party stakes, even before cranking up the surround sound. And, though the owners admit to having hosted epic social occasions, it’s the guest-free evenings they’re steeling themselves against missing. After the birds and kangaroos have visited, and the frogs in the dams embellish the quietening soundscape, these evenings encapsulate their take on tranquility. ● KAY KEIGHERY

Here’s something different in the townhouse department. Colourful and cosy under the toes, it’s a house-size residence big on extras and inbuilt style. There are three social areas, two bedrooms, a study, bathroom and laundry on ground floor. Inviting light through a glazed curve, the main bedroom with spa en suite comprises the first floor. One car can park in front of the garage. The easycare landscaping flatters the subtle facade; it’s not surprising to see solar panels on the roof, and slab heating under polishedconcrete floors (set for off-peak usage) takes the energy efficiency sky-high. The lounge has long, timber-framed windows. The open-plan kitchen, dining and family area forms a roomy hub. Check out the kitchen to inspire your inner chef. Off the hub, the sitting room/study enjoys outdoor aspects through bay-style windows. A cul-de-sac location, seconds from Darebin Parklands and river trails leading all the way to the city, adds quiet on the home-front, and plenty of excuses for Lycra. ● KAY KEIGHERY AGENT \ Miles 9497 3222 PRICE \ $1.3 million – $1.35 million AUCTION \ July 7 at noon

What An Opportunity! Just a 900 m walk from the station and closer still to the bus, parks and the shops, cafes and eateries that make up the centre of Diamond Creek, this generous 635m2 allotment (approx.) comes with a classic home ready to enjoy today and enhance tomorrow. First home buyers, investors or those thinking about fix and flip can look to freshen up the paint, polish up the boards and then sit back and appreciate the proportions and position while deciding how to make the most of the potential on offer. (stca)

Large Land, Grand Possibilities Original, but far from ordinary, this is an exciting discovery for buyers with their minds set firmly on the future. A short walk from cafes, primary school and the bus and within easy reach of the station, it sits on a very generous 718m2 allotment (approx.). Comfortably appointed, generous proportions feature in an interior offering four bedrooms, pristine family bathroom, eat-in kitchen and a large gas heated lounge room. Ready for easy living today, it offers significant scope to revitalize with a contemporary renovation, or to explore options for subdivision (all stca)
