A proposed ring road for Hastings is also in the pipeline as part of the directions and options report for the development of the draft Hastings activity centre structure plan.

As part of the traffic management plan, the report states the ‘‘ring road using Church, Queen, Elizabeth and Salmon streets to provide convenient access to the large supermarket car parks should be put in place to complement the aim of downgrading High Street’s traffic role’’.

In other development news, Lifestyle Communities is preparing the groundwork for 142 homes at its latest over-50s estate at 240 High Street.

The first such development in the area, it could ease some of the pressure on families hit hard by

recent job losses in the Hastings area.

Twenty-five buyers have already signed up for a one or two-bedroom home in the complex, which will also include a clubhouse, bowling green, gymnasium, private cinema, heated indoor pool and spa, library, billiards room and bar. Prices for new homes at Lifestyle Hastings range from $236,700 to $330,250.

Project manager Gary Jamieson said he intended to approach local tradesmen to be involved in the project. ‘‘I prefer to source trades including plumbers, electricians and landscape gardeners locally to build community interest in the development,’’ he said. Cerberus Ward councillor David Garnock said any building project that was good for local business and employed local trades people was a positive thing.

HASTINGS may soon be a ‘construction hub’ with news that an Aldi supermarket and perhaps specialty shops and a ring road are on the way.

Several shop owners, who did not want to be named, told the Weekly they understood the shop development was proposed for land bounded by Victoria, Queen and Alfred streets with the rear of properties fronting High Street.

The proposal has two stages, the first comprising two large specialty shops, five smaller retail tenancies and associated parking.

The second stage will have four small retail tenancies, parking and associated landscaping on the corner of Queen and Elizabeth streets.

An Aldi Australia spokeswoman confirmed Hastings as the location for one of its new stores. ‘‘The new Aldi Hastings will provide highly rewarding career

opportunities to the local community, with positions still on offer for enthusiastic, motivated candidates who would like to join the Aldi team,’’ the spokeswoman said. She declined to comment on when work would get under way.

Hastings real estate agent David Nelli, of Harcourts, said he had heard whispers of a new development. ‘‘I think it would be very well accepted in Hastings, being a lower socio-economic area. I know that the Aldi in Frankston is very popular for cheap groceries.

Woolworths and Coles would be a bit worried, but I think its great it coming into town for more competition,’’ Mr Nelli said.

Sid Ferguson, of Satchwells Hastings real estate, was also aware of rumours about Aldi and an arcade being built in Hastings.

Bus passengers ignored The new Peninsula Link may make life easier for motorists but bus service 788 (Frankston/Portsea) remains inadequate and slow for long-suffering passengers. I have been a regular passenger since 1996. There is a 45-minute frequency during the week and an appalling 75-minute frequency at the weekends. Rye to Frankston takes a boring and slow 75 to 80 minutes.

Increasing numbers of people are using bus 788 and there are many recent incidents of severe overcrowding and many have been standing for long distances. Bus 788 should run 20/30 minutes with some express services.

It’s about time governments gave financial priority to upgrading efficient public transport instead of pandering to freeway financiers and motorists.

Please explain Enough of the political misdirection. There is a $4.8 million cut to Peninsula Health. At Rosebud Hospital, the mother-and-baby unit is closing. At Frankston Hospital, 10 short-stay beds are closed until after Easter.

In late November, the state government cut home and community care funding to councils retrospective for this financial year. The government expects councils to make up this shortfall. My question to Nepean MP Martin Dixon is: why is the state government cutting back funding for the most vulnerable people in our community while doling out millions of dollars to the Victorian racing industry and the grand prix?

BY SAMANTHA ROBIN WHILE many Australians are receiving a pretty penny for their hard work, others are not faring as well, a recent report has revealed.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics’ Employee Earnings and Hours, Australia publication showed one in 10 full-time employees was raking in $2364 or more a week — a far cry from the national minimum wage of $606.

The highest average weekly total cash earnings reported for all employees were for managers ($1926) and professionals ($1438).

At the other end of the scale, however, the statistical snapshot found one in 10 full-time employees earned $738 or less a week. The lowest average weekly total cash earnings were reported for sales workers ($607), community and personal service workers ($707), and labourers ($779).

We’re living happily off the minerals boom but aren’t becoming productive enough to sustain our cost of living. ‘‘We need to prove we can work more efficiently in order to get paid more. Upskilling is at the heart of economic growth, it is about productivity and efficiency.’’

Winery approved in green wedge

BY SAMANTHA ROBIN A WINERY has been approved for a patch of privately owned land in the peninsula green wedge.

Following a heated development assessments committee meeting last month, Mornington Peninsula Shire councillors voted to grant a planning permit for the winery and residential dwelling on two hectares at 102 Coolart Road, Tuerong.

Some councillors, including David Gibb, argued that there was no need for the winery owners to live on site. ‘‘I am not satisfied that a dwelling in necessary. The operators are not required to be on site full-time,’’ Cr Gibb said.

Cr Tim Rodgers agreed that it was unnecessary for owners to live on the land.

It is the second time the applicant has applied for a permit for the winery. The first application was rejected by the council on the basis that there was to be no on-site production.

The renewed plans include a dwelling, vineyards and production facilities.

Cr Frank Martin said the planning application was a good fit for the area. ‘‘This property does tick all the boxes,’’ he said. ‘‘They have a legitimate product for the Mornington Peninsula.’’

The winery will focus on a Chilean style of wine making, which is rare in Australia.

The applicant’s daughter, Yasmine Aspe, speaking on behalf of her father, described him as a passionate wine maker.

She said the unique style of winemaking would be a popular seller in Melbourne and interstate. ‘‘My father is very involved in the winemaking culture, and there is a lot of work that goes into it. There is no doubt in my mind that this will work and will be a success story.’’

The family has been producing wine for three generations.

Cr Anne Shaw said she applauded the applicant and wished him the best of luck in his wine-making endeavour.

Double dunk Flinders MP Greg Hunt and paddling partner Tim McEvoy got dunked as they tried their hand at the Great Peninsula Paddle from Sorrento to Portsea. The pair came in fourth, and last, place after upturning their kayak during the event. They brought in the wooden spoon in the category of two men in a kayak aged 40-60.

Energy saving rewarded

BY SAMANTHA ROBIN INNOVATION and dedication to the environment have won the Kings Creek Hotel in Hastings an award.

The hotel took out the Australian Hotels Association state award for excellence in the category of best environmental practice at a special presentation at the Docklands.

Perhaps the hotel’s largest and most prominent commitment to sustainability and the environment is its wind turbine, which stands out on the horizon along Frankston-Dandenong Road.

The wind turbine reaches an impressive 22 metres in height and supplements 20 per cent of the hotel’s power usage each year.

Kings Creek Hotel manager Greg Alderson said the turbine was introduced by his father, Bruce Alderson, who had the foresight to look to the future of energy production and consumption. ‘‘He was forward-thinking and saw the benefits of renewable energy so wanted to introduce that to the busi-

Mr Alderson said that in the past few years the hotel had taken a number of steps to become more environmentally friendly. ‘‘We have stopped using irrigation on the garden and have formed an agreement with local tree loppers to supply us with more mulch in order to improve our garden beds and make them less water dependent. ‘‘We have chosen drought-tolerant plants and have been very careful in all of our products and finishes to support the environment and ecosystem in Western Port.’’

The hotel is undergoing a major refurbishment, in which much of the materials will be recycled and reused in the redevelopment.

Energy efficient, low cost lighting has also been installed throughout the premises.

Mr Alderson said he would like to see more businesses and industries introducing energy efficient practices.

‘‘Support for wind farmers is nonexistent. We are hotel managers but we also have to do all our own research and repairs and maintenance without any outside assistance,’’ he said. ‘‘We also need more government support to encourage businesses to make changes. ‘‘It would be good to see the government support it more with turbine rebates.’’

Mr Alderson said the award was welcome recognition for all their hard work. ‘‘It is nice to know that out of all the hotels that go up for the awards, we received it. It’s good for little old Hastings to come through, and it is a great way to promote the town. ‘‘The turbine itself creates a lot of interest for the hotel, it is something we are always being asked about. ‘‘We will definitely enter more awards, especially given our lighting upgrade and refurbishments, because we have a lot of things on the go,’’ Mr Alderson said.

Overgrown grass ‘potential fire risk’

BY LEE OPITZ NOT enough priority or money is being given to clearing overgrown vegetation from roadsides and private property, says Mornington resident Fred Crump.

Mr Crump, a former council parks and gardens worker, is concerned that neither the council nor VicRoads are keeping potential fire hazards under control. ‘‘Who’s responsible for fire prevention? When I worked for Cranbourne Council we were always out keeping the grass down. Now no one wants to take responsibility. ‘‘And I’d like to know how many people have been prosecuted for not cleaning up their properties,’’ he said.

Mornington Peninsula Shire’s team leader for natural systems, Simon Thorning, said vegetation works on council-managed roadsides included mowing and vegetation pruning, primarily for safe passage of users.

He said the council also undertook noxious and environmental weed control along high veg-

etation roadside sections, fuel management along selected road sections and roadside weeding to help protect rare indigenous species. ‘‘All these works assist in reducing roadside fuel levels. Funding comes from a number of different programs, including the $1.6 million bushland reserve fire management plan. ‘‘The shire is currently working on a roadsides fire management plan that will build on, and formalise, roadside fuel management works.’’

Mr Thorning said that after increasing funding for fire prevention programs over recent years, the shire’s annual fire management spending was now $2.5 million.

Work was delivered through a contractual arrangement with a long-term service provider. ‘‘If a resident feels roadside vegetation is overgrown, they should report it to the shire on 1300 850 600,’’ he said.

Municipal fire prevention officer Damien Taylor said the shire fire prevention inspection program began in early October.

He said fire prevention officers had undertaken 4527 inspections of private land and

Of these, 93 landowners received infringements for not complying with fire prevention notices and 25 had been forced to pay for a council clean-up.

Mr Taylor said inspections would continue over the fire danger period.

VicRoads is responsible for maintenance on all

major roads. VicRoads’ regional director for metro south-east Peter Todd said the authority undertook a systematic program of bushfire risk assessment of all roads for which it was responsible.

This was recommended by the 2009 Victorian Bushfire Royal Commission.

Mr Todd said works included full-width grass mowing (fire cut) on all rural arterial roads and removing and slashing vegetation.

The chef, who works full-time at the Sorrento Golf Club, said it was an opportunity too good to pass up. ‘‘I wanted to make a name for myself and this was something I couldn’t knock back.

Whether I got kicked out first or made it through to the end it was a great way to elevate my career.’’

Mr Demagistris said he had no idea what he was getting himself into. ‘‘I was a bit nervous. It was hard trying to find the different ingredients in the store room and coming up with creative dishes all the time. You are putting your career on the line and these people are expecting quality food. ‘‘The pressure was unbelievable, for me I couldn’t get my head around it. You walk in every day wondering what is coming next. ‘‘The worst thing you could do would be to make a mistake on national television, but we are only human and these things do happen.

Master chef: Michael Demagistris is competing for a $200,000 prize. ‘‘Now that I am back in my own kitchen everything feels so much easier.’’

Contestants on the show are competing for $200,000 and a trip around the world to work with acclaimed chefs. While filming is completed, the winner has not yet been announced.

One of Mr Demagistris’ passions is food science. ‘‘I love using food in a way that makes it better than what it is — using different textures, gels and gums can turn food into something creative. I want to bring a little bit of theatre into my work and get customers involved.’’

His dream is to one day own a restaurant on the Mornington Peninsula. ‘‘I would love to have a restaurant that has a bit of everything. Being able to represent the Mornington Peninsula through MasterChef was an honour — there are a lot of good restaurants here and some excellent produce. ‘‘My aim would be to open a restaurant here and make it onto the list of the top 100 restaurants.’’

Mr Demagistris said he wanted to make his family, including wife and two children, proud. ‘‘My family have supported me all the way. I just want to do the best I possibly can and do them proud. Australians will get to know who I am as a chef and hopefully one day they will be my customers.’’

Pristine vision for Tootgarook swamp

Fund-raising on one wheel

THE Tootgarook swamp is set to benefit from an offset of the Peninsula Link freeway development.

The land — encompassing 200 hectares of Boneo Park, a 48-hectare slice of Moonah Woodland and a portion of the Tootgarook swamp — is expected to take a decade to be cleaned up and restored to its original condition.

Peninsula Link developer Linking Melbourne Authority has provided funding for the clean-up as part of the offset requirement for the vegetation removed during the freeway construction.

Work on restoring the land is expected to start soon.

Boneo Park owner Rob McNaught has worked with Trust for Nature to enable a covenant to be placed on the 200 hectares to allow it to be permanently protected and preserved.

Flinders MP Greg Hunt said the wetlands included in the covenant were home to a large number of bird species, including many migratory birds. ‘‘This is a tremendous example of what can be achieved and the hope is that this will motivate other landowners to preserve native vegetation on their own properties.’’

BY LEE OPITZ HE’S one of the most recognisable faces in film and television, and you’d recognise his voice in an instant, but for all his success Samuel Johnson says his greatest challenge is yet to come.

The popular actor is about to embark on a 15,000-kilometre journey around Australia to spread the word about breast cancer awareness.

Just to make things more interesting, he’ll ride a unicycle the whole way and attempt to raise $1 million.

He aims to beat the current world record for riding a unicycle for 14,686.82 kilometres across 48 states of America. ‘‘Twenty years ago we didn’t have mobile phones and my father wouldn’t have a television, so we were forced to entertain ourselves. I taught myself to juggle, then incorporated a unicycle and I had an act,’’ Johnson said. ‘‘I remember after I performed in a concert there was a letter in the local newspaper with the heading ‘Juggler Johnson Inspirational’. I told everyone it was my grandma who’d written in, but I will confess now that I actually wrote it.’’

But even more than setting himself such a tough personal challenge, the journey is a message of love to Johnson’s sister Connie, who is coming to the end of her 24-year battle with can-

Johnson said it was important to spread the message to be aware. ‘‘Don’t fall into the booby trap; be breast aware,’’ he told students during a visit to his old school, Mornington Secondary College. ‘‘I ask every lady in this room to keep track of your lumps and bumps. Talk to your mums, your

sisters, your aunties and be aware. Early detection is the key to beating breast cancer.’’

The college’s drum corps will be among 250 students to see the actor off on his journey, leaving Federation Square on Friday .

INBRIEF Man charged with assault AN 18-year-old man appeared in the Frankston Magistrates Court on Monday charged with false imprisonment and serious assault. Police allege the former Tyabb resident, now of no fixed address, assaulted a woman while she was jogging along the bike path in Hastings, beside the railway line, at 10.30am on Saturday. It is alleged the 47-yearold Frankston South woman was struck on the back of the head with a lump of wood, knocked to the ground and bashed repeatedly. The man demanded she go into nearby bushland, but she refused. She was then continually hit until the piece of wood splintered into shards too small to use as a weapon. Police allege he then grabbed hold of her but she managed run onto FrankstonFlinders Road and hail a passing motorist, who took her to the Hastings police station.

The man was apprehended by Hastings police at the Hastings football oval. The man did not apply for bail and was remanded to appear in the Melbourne Magistrates Court.

Police to target speeders Police have warned they will fine the increasing number of speeders on Bungower Road. Sergeant Dave Collins of Hastings highway patrol said as speeding detected there had risen since Peninsula Link opened, it

appeared drivers were not slowing down after exiting the freeway. The speed limit for Bungower Road is 80km/h. Drivers who are caught travelling between 10-25km/h over the limit face a $282 fine and the loss of three demerit points.

Speed limit lowered Drivers have been reminded the speed limit for Graydens Road, between Coolart and Frankston-Flinders roads in Hastings, has been lowered from 100km/h to 80 km/h.

Sergeant Dave Collins,of Hastings Highway patrol said the reduction followed several collisions at the Boes Road intersection.

Critical condition after crash A man was flown to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a critical condition following a collision at Dromana on Monday. The crash happened at 7.15am when a car turning right into Collins Road from Nepean Highway was involved in a collision with an oncoming 16-tonne tip truck with a bobcat on the back.

The driver of the car, a man in his 50s, was the sole occupant of the vehicle. Rosebud highway patrol’s Leading Senior Constable Daniel Magee said the man was lucky to escape. ‘‘Anybody else in the vehicle would not have survived,’’ he said. The truck driver was treated for shock at the scene.

Winners hit trail again

BY LEE OPITZ LIVING up to the Two Bays Trail Run motto ‘Only the tough survive’, 1000 runners filled the field for the annual event last month.

It’s not for amateurs — only runners who qualified were allowed to tackle the 28-kilometre course from Dromana to Cape Schanck and only the toughest of all attempted the double crossing.

The spectacular route includes Arthurs Seat and Greens Bush forest reserve, passing by Bushrangers Bay and the Cape Schanck lighthouse. Race director Rohan Day said it had been exciting to see the event grow from 500 competitors in 2011 to full capacity.

Every Australian state, the United Kingdom, United States, Brazil, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea was represented in the run.

A total of 950 finished the run, which also produced its first back-to-back winners: Kirstin Bull in the women’s 56-kilometre run and Tracey Austin in the women’s 28-kilometre event. In the men’s half course, Stephen Dinneen broke the old record by more than seven minutes to finish in 1 hour and 46 minutes.

Park’s new view from the top

BY LEE OPITZ VISITORS to Point Nepean National Park can now get a new perspective on the park’s spectacular views of Port Phillip Bay and Bass Strait following the completion of a new public viewing platform.

The Monash light tower was constructed by the Port of Melbourne Corporation with the co-operation of Parks Victoria.

PoMC chief executive officer Stephen Bradford said the tower was named after Sir John Monash, the acclaimed civil engineer and military commander of World War I. “While it’s not well known, Sir John Monash once worked at the former Melbourne Harbour Trust as a young engineer in the early 1890s and we’re proud to deliver a community asset which bears his name,” Mr Bradford said.

The tower played a key role in the safe navigation of ships in Port Phillip Bay from the time it was erected at its present site in 1932, until its navigation light ceased operation in 2005.

The upgraded tower is powered by solar energy, wind turbines and a gas generator and will function as part of a sophisticated

Interpretive signage on the platform provides information about the tower’s function, shipping in Port Phillip Bay and identifies key landmarks in and beyond Point Nepean National Park.

Nepean MP Martin Dixon, who officially opened the platform, said the light had been an important navigational structure for

decades. ‘‘I warmly congratulate PoMC for the foresight in incorporating a public viewing platform into the upgrade of the communications tower for the safe navigation of commercial shipping.

“The 360-degree views from the viewing platform provide a unique perspective on the geography and landscape of the western tip of the Mornington Peninsula from Bass Strait to Port Phillip Bay and will add to the visitor experience at the park.”

Volunteers - The Backbone of the Community Recently I was privileged to meet up with Kate Smith, who is the inspiration behind the new Peninsula Wig Library, Presently operating on Thursdays from the Sorrento Community Centre.

This is a free service for women who lose their hair because of chemotherapy.

They can now be provided with a wig to boost their self-esteem and dignity while undergoing this treatment. Normally only those with extras on private health insurance are covered for a wig.

Kate Smith runs this library with a team of volunteers. When Kate was undergoing chemotherapy she was asked by the Peninsula Private Hospital to become a foundation member of the committee to address this need.

Fourscore, and a few lan Storen jokes the only reason he is still alive is simply cause “they” just can’t get rid of him.

“They” are his nine children, 32 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren. “I could name most of them if given the time,” he boasts.

A skilled carpenter, he ticks off the reasons for his long life.

The first of the Storens to reach a century in more than 200 years — it became official last Friday — he never smoked, never drank alcohol and lived a healthy, clean life.

Australian Bureau of Statistics figures show that the nation has more than 4250 centenarians — people aged 100 or more — and supercentenarians (110 or older).

That’s about 235 per cent higher than two decades ago, although the total population grew by just 31 per cent during that time.

But right now Alan is finding it hard to have a positive outlook on life.

“There’s nothing good about living to 100. My legs have given away, and I don’t go out the door much any more. You just have to make the best of it,” he said.

While our average life expectancy at birth is around 82, more Australians are living to 100 and beyond. LEE OPITZ talks to three members of this exclusive club.

Alan married Cicely in 1943. “She was a wonderful mother. She could do anything. She died on June 5, 2002 at 11.30. In a car accident. I haven’t lived long enough to get over it.”

In the 1950s the couple bought a block of land in Dromana where summer holidays were spent camping in tents, caravans or the back of the utility. They built a house and moved down permanently in the ’70s. Alan’s still there with son John — “it’s a good world, I’ve got no complaints”.

As for the best thing since sliced bread in the past 100 years? Alan reckons it’s, well, sliced bread. ‘‘It’s a great invention. When you have to slice

bread for 11 lunches every day, it saves a lot of time.’’

Worldwide, the United Nations estimates, there were about 455,000 centenarians in 2009.

That number is predicted to rise ninefold to about 4.1 million by 2050. As of last year, Australia has one of the highest rates of centenarians per capita, behind Japan, France, the US, Canada and the UK. John McCormack, a senior lecturer at La Trobe University and an expert on centenarians, says working hard and not being overweight are the most common characteristics among the 130 centenarians and super-centenarians he has interviewed. ‘‘It’s assumed that genes have quite a strong impact for longevity. But there are environmental influences as well and I’ve found that most of the people have lived fairly healthy lives,’’ he wrote last year in an article titled ‘Want to live to 100?. ‘‘Most of them are from a different era, so all the jobs they had then were physically hard. We didn’t have as much food as we have now, and when I do a body mass index in my studies, I haven’t found any centenarian in Australia who was overweight.’’

Health advancements and disease control are aiding the rising number of people aged 100 or more. Their numbers double every eight years.

But staying active and being independent are also factors. ‘‘We have this stereotype that older people are frail and decrepit, in a nursing home and not able to do anything for themselves. I’ve found that more than half the people aged 100 live in the community, not in a skilled nursing facility,’’ Dr McCormack says.

If you ask Beryl Sheedy, it’s all down to good genes, eating well, a glass of chardonnay every evening — and chocolate.

Beryl was, and is, a beauty. She has a style and glamour perhaps unexpected in a woman who has survived four generations.

Born of good Irish stock in Warrnambool on January 14, 1913, Beryl O’Mullane was about 18 months old when the family moved to a shop at 198 Glenferrie Road, Malvern, where her mother opened a dressmaking business. It’s still there, in its original condition, with a curved facade and a concrete kangaroo on top. But today it sells hot fish and chips, not hot fashion.

Beryl, of Balnarring, says her mother taught her the importance of keeping up appearances. ‘‘My mother was a high-class dressmaker who designed and made for the society people of Melbourne. We went to Government House

twice when the Queen was there. Mum loved to see the women wearing her frocks.’’

Her mother became the breadwinner when Beryl’s father returned from the battlefields of France, suffering the effects of gas poisoning.

“I remember the noisy trams and trips back to Warrnambool to see the family. We’d start off at about four in the morning and arrive about four in the afternoon.”

She’d sit next to her dad in the family’s Maxwell and helped to steer the long course. She met Jim at a carnival in Sandringham, where her mother had bought a holiday house. Older by nine years, Jim swept 18-year-old Beryl off her feet.

“He bought me Ashes of Roses perfume, and I’d only known him a fortnight. Every Saturday night when we were courting we would go to the theatre and I always came home with a box of Newman’s chocolates.”

Although she had worked for her mother, it was the job of wife, mother and friend that she valued most. Renowned for her cooking, Beryl would host a tea every weekend featuring her homemade sweets and cakes.

“I don’t know how I did it while looking after the children,” she recalls.

Jim never drove, but perhaps because of those long trips to Warrnambool, Beryl loved being the family driver. ‘‘Mum was one of the best drivers ever,’’ son Bernie says. ‘‘She always had the car and the family heading in the right direction.’’

While macular degeneration has curtailed Beryl’s driving, it hasn’t stopped her from getting out and about.

Bernie says his siblings and Beryl’s 14 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren have to make an appointment to see their elusive matriarch: she’s always so busy as an active member of the CWA, senior citizens club, Legacy and the church, and the unofficial widows’ club, a group of friends who meet monthly for lunch and a flutter on the pokies.

She lives independently and loves tending her thriving garden.

Beryl, who had open-heart surgery eight years ago, said it would have to be a better world with all the advances in medicine. ‘‘Must write to that doctor to tell him I am still alive,” she quips.

Longevity trends found in Dr McCormack’s research showed there were very few smokers among centenarians, and the ones who did smoke gave up at an early age. It also found that many of the men who reached 100 were unmarried. ‘‘As centenarians redefine old age, 65 is almost like a prime age again. I think that 72 is the new 65,’’ he said.

Although the gender gap is closing, women still predominate among centenarians. ‘‘Of the 130 people I sampled, 80 per cent were women. Women tend to look after themselves better than men, healthwise. More than a third of my sample had no children, which is a bit over the standard representation in the census.

Love story: Florence Close says the love of her life was her husband Harry. ‘‘If they did have children, women often had them in their 40s. It seems like they’d delayed, or pushed menopause back a little bit, which may be an indication that somehow or other they were ageing a bit more slowly.’’

Perhaps having to wait a long time for her first child is the reason Florence Close is still going strong. ‘‘I don’t know how I’m doing it. No one else in my family has lived this long,’’ the 101-year-old says.

Already a celebrity for reaching the century on October 25, 2011, Florence was pleasantly surprised when the Weekly called in to her Patterson Lakes home for a chat. ‘‘The paper made a fuss then. I don’t know that I have anything interesting to tell you.’’

Sitting in the garden she enjoys so much, Florence says it is nice to talk to someone new. ‘‘I think a lot. I sit here in my little house and think about all sorts of things. But I am lucky that I can still think and still talk.’’

She can’t remember the date she married or when she lost her beloved Harry, but he is in her thoughts every day. ‘‘The saddest part of my life was when he went away. You would have loved him. I was very special to him. I was very lucky.’’

It was like a bolt of lightning when Harry met Florence at the ticket counter at Ivanhoe railway station. ‘‘He sold me a ticket and I guess he thought I was a bit of all right. I liked him straightaway too, and he asked me out. I was going out with

another boy at the time, but I gave him the flick.’’

After a courtship of outings and ‘‘canoodling’’ in the back of the car, the young couple married and were transferred by the railways to Red Cliffs in the north-west of the state and set up home there. ‘‘I hated the heat and there was nothing but rows and rows of grapevines to look at. We had no conveniences, and I had to cook on a woodfired stove.’’

While there are good memories of time shared with Harry up north, there are painful ones too of difficulty in getting pregnant and giving birth to a stillborn child — ‘‘you never get over it’’. But the long-awaited arrival of her ‘‘precious’’ John completed the family.

A stay-at-home mum, Florence is critical of today’s working mothers. ‘‘I don’t understand why mothers shove their babies on to someone else. They don’t know their kids now. Kids get far too much today and they don’t appreciate it. But that’s just my opinion. I would have loved to have had more children, but I’m so thankful that I have John. Family is so important. ‘‘Sometimes I don’t think it’s a good world today. It’s just not the same. People want too much, and I don’t think they love each other like we used to. We used to show it to each other. But I mustn’t moan. I don’t think I’d change anything. I was happy.’’

Musically and stylistically something of a cross between Ash Grunwald and Pete Murray, Frankenreiter’s personal brand of boogie tends towards infectious chug-a-lug, spiced with sharply plucked melody lines.

Since departing his former band Sunchild for a solo career, he has notched up five albums and many EPs and videos. His most recent record, Start Livin’ is a nine-track collection of simple, folk-infused songs that offer indie fans that ‘something’ they are often looking for.

Frankenreiter said. ‘‘Most of the songs are about my wife and our two boys, and the life that we’ve built together in Hawaii. ‘‘This album’s completely unlike anything I’ve ever done before. We skipped the basics and went for a whole lot of different instruments. ‘‘We never brought in a drum set — instead there’s handclapping for percussion, or banging on pots and pans. We were using everything from bells to singing bowls to Zippo lighter. At one point we put some beans and salts in a can and shook it.’’

A musical and surf buddy of American performer Jack Johnson, Frankenreiter played support for his Oz tour and has enjoyed a following here ever since. Johnson co-produced and played on his self-titled album.

Activity: Help learner drivers gain their probationary licence.

Details: The Mornington L2P program needs volunteers who can spare an hour a week assisting young learner drivers to gain their 120 hours of on-road driving experience. L2P is designed to help young people who have limited or no access to a vehicle and a supervising driver to gain the experience needed to gain their licence. The learners are matched with volunteers from the community who mentor and supervise their driving using a vehicle provided by the Mornington Peninsula Shire. Volunteers must be a fully licensed driver.

Where: The L2P program operates from Hastings and Rosebud.

Bulldogs snap Sorrento streak

BY MORGAN COLE MORNINGTON has staged a major coup, defeating league powerhouse Sorrento by five runs in their MPCA Provincial Shield match on Saturday.

The Bulldogs are the first side to defeat Sorrento this season, stamping themselves as a serious threat come finals.

The Mornington batting line-up offered fierce resistance all the way down the order.

Ben Clements was again at the forefront with a knock of 57.

Senior assistant coach Rob Hearn was delighted that his side is brimming with confidence, now that the biggest scalp in Provincial is now under their belt. ‘‘We knew it would be a really tough game,’’ Hearn said. ‘‘All we needed was a decent start and we felt we could win it.’’

Andrew King again spearheaded the Sorrento attack after taking 12 wickets against Ballam Park in the previous round — he snared five wickets, including the scalp of Clements.

The Mornington batsmen adapted to the slow pitch with Hearn (41), Clements (57) and captain-coach Luke Popov (47) all accumulating high totals. ‘‘The ground was really slow, so their 220 really seemed like 300,’’ Hearn said.

The hero of the match for Mornington came was 14-year-old batsman Ryan McDonald, who made 30 runs to help guide the Bulldogs to victory. ‘‘He was really good out there and showed a lot of poise under pressure,’’ Hearn said.

Sorrento is certain to be playing finals and Mornington has all but secured its place in the final four with Baxter, in third place, nipping at its heels.

Fourth place remains up for grabs.

The Peninsula Old Boys look to have found form at the right time of year holding that place, but Mt Eliza and Crib Point remain in the hunt.

Resignation hits Steelers WESTERN Port Steelers have moved swiftly to replace Youth League 2 championship-winning coach Kenny Brunner.

The Steelers announced that George Yerondais would be replacing the popular Brunner, who was forced to stand down for family reasons.

Steelers general manager Marc Pirrotta said the club was confident Yerondais was the right man to continue the giant inroads the Youth League 2 boys had made under Brunner.

“There is no doubt that it was a big blow to us when Kenny resigned from Western Port Basketball,’’ he said. ‘‘However, we respected his decision as he had to do what was right for his family. ‘‘But our priorities quickly turned to finding a replacement that would not only fit the requirements of the role, but to also continue the legacy of a successful culture for our Youth League program and we feel we have found that with George.”

Yerondais is a junior representative coach with the Steelers and has a strong background in basketball, having worked with Australian Boomers coach Brett Brown during his time at Bulleen in the 1990s.

Yerondais said the Steelers had the right system in place and he was excited at continuing and expanding the work that has already been done.

“My vision is to carry on the winning culture that Kenny’s legacy has left behind with this group,’’ he said. ‘‘Further to that though, my vision is to work in with the senior men’s program and head coach Justin Bourchier to open up opportunities for players who are actively looking to take the next step.”

Yerondais said he believed giving the players defined roles and maintaining a strong set of team rules was paramount to a successful team.

“Maintaining structure and discipline as a group I see as one of my key focuses in the initial stages of this program and my involvement,” he said.

Pirrotta said the appointment of Yerondais had been straightforward.

“We went through a pretty arduous process and had a lot of interest from potential candidates as well — including some well-known names around the Big V community,’’ he said. ‘‘I suppose who wouldn’t want to coach a championship winning team?

“But George interviewed exceptionally well and brought a clear vision to the table that we couldn’t ignore. I have no doubt we have found the right man for the job and I am truly excited to see how the youth men’s team progresses through 2013.”

Since Brunner quit the post, the Steelers have run their own pre-season, with Yerondais set to take the reins this week.

“The immediate impact that I will be striving to achieve is to mesh with the group in order to establish a level of understanding and rapport,’’ he said. ‘‘This will be the key to building the trust and respect required.”

The Steelers play their first pre-season game on Saturday.

Carey hopes four can have a crack at cup

BY BRAD McGRATH PAT Carey won’t know which way to look in today’s $350,000 Listed Centrebet Mornington Cup (2400m).

The Mornington trainer could have as many as four runners in his home town cup as he tries to emulate his 2008 success with Attrition.

In one of the hottest fields in the history of the Mornington Cup, Carey will certainly have Mornington Cup Prelude (2000m) winner Durnford and mare Dame Claire in the starting field. Carey will also be sweating on starts for Altonio and Angola who are the second and third emergencies.

The local hope will be trying to go one better than highly-fancied Cedarberg went in 2011 when he was narrowly beaten at the post.

Durnford and Angola are sired by the same horse as Cedarberg who tragically died during track work last year.

“I don’t know about redemption, they only ever run a race once and you deal with that result. I don’t look backwards, you just go forward. The benefit of going forward from that race with Cedarberg was that he went on to win the BMW,” Carey earlier told Inside Racing.

“Durnford is a different type of horse to the

likes of Cedarberg, Ethiopia and Angola who were all huge horses around 17 hands; he’s smaller and has a lighter frame and I think there’s a question mark on him at 2400 metres.

“Having said that, when you’ve got a horse hitting the line at the end of 2000 metres, like he did last start, it always gives you confidence going forward.”

If one of Carey’s quartet is to gain automatic entry into this year’s Caulfield Cup they will have to beat an impressive field which includes Gai Waterhouse-trained top weight Rueben Percival and group 1 winners Shadows in the Sun and Fiumicino.

Trainer Stephen Theodore and jockey Craig Williams will attempt to claim the $250,000 Inglis Premier (1200m) with exceptional two year old Crack A Roadie.

“Crack A Roadie is just where I want him going into Wednesday. It’s been a perfect preparation so far,’’ Theodore said. ‘‘It’s very hard with two-year-olds, let alone any horse to say that everything’s gone spot on, but it has and I wish the race was tomorrow.’’

Theodore will also be attempting to win the $120,000 Listed Hareeba Stakes (1200m) with Last Gift who was previously trained by Jim Fogarty.

MPNFL sees no drug problems but remains vigilant MPNFL boss Jeff Jones does not think the league has an illicit drugs problem but believes it would be ‘‘naive’’ to think country footballers are immune from recreational use.

While the AFL Victoria Countryaffiliated competition falls under the AFL’s anti-doping policy, Jones said he was unaware of any players being drug tested.

Recreational drugs were part of society and ‘‘you would have to be living under a rock’’ to be unaware of them.

‘‘Under the AFL’s doping policy community footballers can also be tested by ASADA,’’ he said. ‘‘It’s probably not as regimented as the AFL or VFL. ‘‘You would have to be naive to think people in sport are not using recreational drugs. ‘‘You can see it in everyday life when you walk down the street.’’

There has not been a recorded case of an AFL Victoria Country-registered footballer testing positive for drugs.

Connell agreed drugs in society were a problem and said they were actively pursuing ways to educate community level sportspeople on the perils of drug taking.

He said there were no plans for drug testing to take place at a local level but it could happen. ‘‘There has been no research to suggest there would be performanceenhancing drugs in country football,’’ he said. ‘‘There is no doubt illicit drugs in society are a massive problem and as a

football community we are doing what we can.’’

Connell said AFL Victoria Country would be rolling out several anti-drug initiatives over the course of this year.

Jones said the MPNFL would embrace anything that contributes to stamping out drugs in sport. ‘‘There are a number of courses available but we haven’t had a drug education course since I joined the MPNFL eight months ago. ‘‘We have covered it as part of our road safety and alcohol courses.’’

AFL Victoria, which governs competitions including the VFL and TAC Cup, enforces a stringent education program.

VFL players are regularly drug tested and Casey Scorpions’ Wade Lees received an 18-month ban for importing performance-enhancing drugs in 2010.

AFL Victoria confirmed last week it would be sending trained staff to VFL clubs to make players aware of risks and subsequent sanctions.
