ell, of course there’s life after year 12! Every student knows it, and that’s the problem.

It’s the life after the neurosis-making years of 11 and 12 that you’re desperately striving for – the gap year, the course you actually want to study, the job, or just the pub – that makes these final weeks of exams and results so overwhelming.

If you are a year 12 student reading this – or if some equally overwhelmed parent is reading this to you right now (and I’m sorry about that) – almost every pressure you can imagine stands between you and real life right now. There is life, and only life, after year 12: that’s the real point.

I’m referring of course to the well-meaning campaign being run right now by the youth mental-health website Reach Out, trying to calm the flighty souls of final-year school students as they bow their heads and walk down the lonely race and onto the Hunger Games field that is year 12 exams.

It’s a campaign, voiced by well-meaning, high-profile celebrities and others reassuring

students that their whole life will not be defined by a VCE score.

It’s a nice sentiment but – with apologies to the good people at Reach Out and to all my colleagues who took part in the campaign – you’re too late.

These kids have been told, warned, nagged, threatened since they were nine (sorry, scratch that: since they could form letters) that absolutely everything hinged on their year 12 mark, on their ENTER score, and on the ability of the school their parents chose for them to procure the most first-round university offers for their student body.

The school has been playing its part, by funnelling these kids from the time of their very first NAPLANs into targeted streams of success; so now the kids have to play theirs, by working like buggery and getting the best final-year mark they possibly can.

The rhetoric has been heavy for years, and these kids have absorbed it as they have their calcium and their fluoride: through their bones, in their teeth, as they laboured for years through a curriculum designed to make them and their school look as good as possible on that last Day of Judgment.

OK, nothing wrong with working hard; absolutely nothing wrong with excelling.

But, please, don’t come at these wild-eyed, exhausted, anxious kids now, all warm, fuzzy and Steiner-ey with this: “Oh, year 12 isn’t the

“the campaign’s sentiment is nice – but it’s too late” be-all and end-all; oh, your final mark doesn’t matter that much … oh, there’s LIFE after VCE, don’t you know!” Really? Where were you with all that accommodating stuff when they were in year 11?

What drives me nuts is the inconsistency in the message. I can tell you there will be some equally frantic teachers who will not want to hear that the year 12 mark is not the most important thing right now: they’ve just expended their every cell on trying to make sure that for their students it is. I can only imagine how ridiculous it must sound to hear

now – now – that all of this work, all of this stress is not all that important after all.

Here’s what I know: I know so many people who have taken the most unlikely routes in order to find their reason for being on this earth; very few of them have been sure about their journeys. Some regret them; some are enormously pleased about the life-affirming opportunities afforded by their missteps. But all of them, either through dint of their own personality or because of the loving guidance of someone close, had ready access to a deep understanding of joy: of what gave them joy, of what gave their life connection and purpose. And, while their year 12 mark might have mattered, or might not have mattered, what mattered most was their sense of self and their desire to find purpose.

Chrissie Swan knows that leveraging her profile is the best way to help those who need it. “The advantage of having someone like me is that I can get on television, and on any given [show] you’re talking to 800,000 people,” she says.

“It’s a great mystery [to me] why I’m in the public eye or that anyone would approach me to support something or that I could make a difference, so it took me a long time to work out that I could make a difference.”

With three small children and a new role with Nova 100’s breakfast team in 2016 that will see her alarm clock going off at 4.30am, Chrissie is a busy woman. But she makes time for two charities: Care Australia, focusing on its work to help girls get an education both in Australia and in developing countries, and the Ardoch Youth Foundation, a charity providing education support for disadvantaged children and young people.

“I chose two because I want to understand and believe in what I’m doing and have enough time to make a difference,” she says.

“I don’t want to say, ‘Yeah, I’ll put my face on that’. That doesn’t suit me. And you get caught out; someone asks you about something and you say, ‘I don’t know’ – that’s not me.”

Chrissie began her association with Care Australia five years ago, helping with various campaigns including a Walk in Her Shoes fundraising event to help reduce the distance women and girls in developing countries have to walk – by providing clean water and nutritious food close to home – meaning girls can spend more time in school.

Chrissie conceived the idea for Chrissie Kringle, which encouraged people to “buy” a goat or a well to support communities in developing countries.

“I do a lot of publicity, go on as many TV shows as I can,” she says. “I’m the face of their promotional material.”

She says the commonality with Ardoch Youth Foundation is that it’s about education.

“There’s a massive problem in our own country with education and I wasn’t aware of

Tim Rogers’ association with the Sacred Heart Mission in St Kilda began five years ago when his young daughter was away in the United States for Christmas with her mother. “It hit really hard and I was shocked,” he says. Christmas, he says, added “this extra level of piquantness, not having family around”.

Tim – “not a big fan of Christmas” – decided to use the time productively.

The lead singer of the band You Am I and now the Bamboos, and a resident of St Kilda for 16 years, decided to approach the mission to see if they could use his services.

“The only job I do as well as sing a little bit out of tune is dishwashing, which is what I’ve done since I was about 16; lots of pizza restaurants around Australia,” he says.

“I chanced my arm, turning up [at Sacred Heart] and volunteering. I wasn’t sure I’d get the gig. I like to do a good job with anything … I turned up and brought my own gloves, being the obsessive I am.”

He need not have worried about being accepted. He was welcomed warmly and returned to wash dishes on Boxing Day as well. “I wish I’d done it a lot more during the year because at Christmas everyone shows up, ‘Oh, aren’t we great, we are wonderful people’, where during the year they need more hands on deck.”

Tim enjoys the time he spends at the mission and says the roles are carefully defined. “I’m a porcelain specialist.

I’m a better dishwasher than I am a waiter.”

He says the kitchen environment has much in common with that of the band room. “It’s the banter, trading stories. If you work in a kitchen, you’ve

got to have good stories. If you’ve got good stories you’ve got value, like a six-foot-six full forward.”

This year Tim hopes to do the stretch – three to four days over Christmas at the mission. “It’s their busiest time of the year and a pretty heavy emotional time as well. Around Christmas … if you are kind of a loner, estranged, it can hit a little harder around then, whether you’re religious or not. And I found it did to me.

“I thought if I go down there for a couple of hours and if that’s helping people who are far worse off [then good]. I look around and think, ‘I could be needing Sacred Heart’s help in a couple of years’. I’ve had bad years and bad times and health issues so I figure I’m putting in so I’ll get a seat for lunch when I need it.”

Do people recognise him? “Not a lot.

A few folks mistake me for an uglier version of Tex Perkins or the guitarist in Powderfinger or Tim Freedman, which I’ll never accept.” ● » www.sacredheartmission.org

Ian Curley

supports st vincent de paul & pancare foundation Today Ian Curley is one of Melbourne’s most revered chefs, presiding over the kitchens at the eternally fashionable The European with its chic Supper Club lounge and rooftop bar Siglo. But he reflects that if he had not received guidance, things could have turned out very differently. “I didn’t come from the best start,” he says. “I genuinely believe that you’re only three bad decisions away from being homeless or in real strife.”

Before moving to Australia in 1988, Ian spent his sometimes wild youth in Coventry, England, “fighting, essentially, in little street gangs,” he says. He spent some time in a youth detention centre. “It was to do with football hooliganism and being a troublemaker. I did time in a juvenile prison for young offenders, where they say, ‘If you’re going to carry on this way, you’re going to the big house’.

“My mother and father came to visit me over Christmas and I thought, ‘Why am I making them do this on Boxing Day when they’re leaving the rest of the family at home to come and visit me?’. You feel about this big and you think, ‘This is not the life for me, I’m not that bright, I’m not going to be the world’s greatest criminal, I don’t have the heart for it’, so I tried to put my head in the right space.

“I could have gone either way. I went into cooking to get away from being a troublemaker and it worked for me.”

When he became successful, Ian decided to give back by helping others change their lives. Among the several groups he helps with his time and skills is the St Vincent de Paul Society. He has contributed to

supports ovarian cancer research foundation Megan Gale knows that one of the best uses of celebrity is the chance to give something back.

“I think there should be an obligation to do it,” she says. “I think [it’s great] if you can use your profile as a tool to raise awareness and especially for a cause like [ovarian cancer], which I didn’t have an awareness of before.”

Megan has been involved with the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation for four years.

It began when she came on board as an ambassador for L’Oréal Paris, which had formed a partnership with the foundation in 2009 to help raise funds and awareness.

The facts about ovarian cancer are shocking. It’s the fourth-most-common cancer affecting women. The foundation says that each year about 1500 women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer in Australia, and every 10 hours one woman dies from the disease in this country.

Crucially, there’s no early detection test.

The ultimate aim of the foundation is to develop a non-invasive and cost-effective test

many events for youth projects over the years, sometimes working with people with drug and alcohol issues. “People need a hand up sometimes. I had a hand up. People gave me good advice.”

His most hands-on involvement has been working at a Fitzroy residential facility, teaching cooking and life skills to 14 people dealing with substance abuse. “It’s a detox house where they’re tested every day so if they’ve taken drugs or alcohol they’re asked to leave,” he says.

“I would teach them cooking, how to make pasta, meatballs, try and fend for themselves,

Some of these people have never had to cook for themselves. I think if I can impart some sort of knowledge to them, more power to me.”

Ian also donates his time to the Pancare Foundation, which supports research projects into pancreatic, liver, biliary, oesophageal and stomach cancers, as well as the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation and the Starlight Children’s Foundation.

“I was humbled and shocked to learn some of the statistics about ovarian cancer,” Megan says. “There was a lot I didn’t know about the disease. I didn’t know you couldn’t get an early detection test. I just assumed, that like breast cancer or cervical cancer, if you were diligent about your health, you could go along and have a check-up. [With ovarian cancer] you can’t.

“I’ve probably been lucky that no one I know has been affected by it. However 10 years ago I could say I didn’t know anyone who had cancer, but now I can count with more than two hands.”

How has her involvement changed her? “It puts life in perspective. It makes you realise all these other little things that we get stressed about from day to day – it matters but it’s not the be-all and end-all. Jockey Damian Lane recently bought a two-storey home near Flemington racecourse and a luxury car, all from race earnings – and he’s only 21. But money isn’t what motivates him. It’s about being the best at his sport.

A stint riding against the world’s best in Hong Kong earlier this year honed his skills and saw him return to Victorian racecourses in great form and on track in the Victorian jockeys’ premiership race.

What’s the buzz?

It’s more than just his name, it’s Damian’s form that leads to comparisons to one of racing’s leading lights; the newcomer is often compared to veteran rider Damien Oliver.

Their stories are comparable: two jockeys with similar first names come to Victoria from Western Australia and lead the field.

The young Damian is leading the Victorian jockeys’ premiership ahead of the 43-year-old veteran, who holds 10 metropolitan Victorian premiership titles, but it’s early days yet.

In the beginning …

Far from the glamour of the racing carnival, Damian started his career mucking out stables [read: picking up horse poo] and doing training rides starting at 4am as a favour for his mum Vicki Harper and stepfather Greg Harper, both trainers in WA. At 14 he moved in with his dad, former jockey and WA

trainer, Michael Lane, and came into money – the giddy amount of $140 a fortnight. And he still had to be ready for school at 7am.

The big break …

Damian became an apprentice to his father, riding winners in WA. At 17 he started again, moving to Victoria to finish his apprenticeship with the Mathew Ellerton/ Simon Zahra team. His break was riding Trust in a Gust to win the 2014 Sir Rupert Clarke stakes. He then gave up the chance to win the 2014-15 jockeys’ premiership to ride in one of the world’s most competitive arenas from April to June this year in Hong Kong.

Where to now?

Damian shares a similar dream to his colleagues; he wants to hold the Melbourne Cup as the winning jockey.

This is also usually the time people start admitting things – past love affairs, that period when they thought you were a bitch, the use of substances other than moisturiser to maintain their youthful glow. There can also be meltdowns, when those who may well have maintained good hair all evening will lay their head on the table and tell you things they’ve never admitted to anyone – their marriage is on the rocks, their boobs aren’t real, or they ran over the cat.

For this reason, and also because around now it’s game on for red-wine lips and loud singing, staying the distance can have its advantages.

e food writers live to discover a new ingredient. So I raced across to Fitzroy with a couple of buddies as soon as I learnt about Saba’s Ethiopian restaurant.

It’s well-suited to its Brunswick Street location, with bold red feature walls and a collection of colourful baskets clustered and hung as artwork.

Saba Alemayoh and her mother Tekebash Gebre run the restaurant. Tekebash does most of the cooking and Saba is a delightful host.

The initial claim to my attention is their use of teff flour to create injera, a traditional Ethiopian flatbread.

Teff is an ancient grain, smaller than a poppy seed, similar to quinoa, and gluten-free. Saba imports it and has it milled at Melbourne Milling in Box Hill South. She has her eye on a new grower in Victoria.

Saba, an Australian from the age of nine, had been running a health food and catering business before opening the restaurant in late August.

Food is served on big, flat plates, lined with injera, that fit into colourful baskets. Dishes arrive in separate bowls that are overturned onto the flatbread.

There’s no cutlery (unless you really want it), so tear pieces of the bread and use them to scoop up curries, dhal and stews.

The injera is spongy and delicate, with a fermented, yeasty tang that’s a natural offset to the chilli used in most dishes. We order

ow-alcohol wines are so hot right now.

It’s a trend I wholly support, but I find the wines rarely hit the mark.

There’s a couple of ways lower-alcohol wines are made and both can compromise the product.

Grapes can be picked early when they contain less sugar (and lower alcohol) but this means they’re also missing flavour.

Alcohol can also be removed using reverse osmosis but this can make the wines feel thin and unbalanced.

There is one low-alcohol Australian classic that has been picked early for the past 50 years and has alcohol levels at 10-11 per cent. It’s Hunter Valley semillon.

Semillon is grown around the world – it’s the white grape of Bordeaux and Sauternes – and widely in Australia. For some reason it’s the soils and climate of the Hunter Valley that does it best.

Semillon’s a curious grape. Its large berries are quite delicate and require hand harvesting. The best examples are picked just before it fully ripens. Incredibly long-lived, young semillon develops

complex flavours over time. Age changes its texture, too, from zippy to rich and smooth over five or so years.

Luckily, many Hunter producers set bottles aside each year and do the ageing for you. You pay $15 to $20 extra for the privilege. It’s not a bad thing at all. ● BEN THOMAS bthomas@theweeklyreview.com.au

The just-released Thomas Wines 2009 cellar reserve Braemore semillon ($50) is just starting to show secondary characters as a six-year-old. It’s delightfully smooth and there’s a light toastiness to its zesty citrus flavours.

Sarah says she likes that Trudy’s transformation isn’t the predictable fairytale it might seem.

While some actors would be chafing for more lead roles, Sarah says there are definite bonuses in taking the smaller parts. “Part of that is being able to be part of films that are telling great stories and have wonderful actors and actresses at the helm. t’s been a big year for Sarah Snook. There’s scarcely been a new Australian film or TV series released without the Adelaide-born actor’s name in the credits. She’s had lead roles in The Secret River and The Beautiful Lie (currently showing on ABC), while notching up scene-stealing supporting roles in Holding The Man and The Dressmaker. Major celebrity seems imminent.

“It’s surreal,” Sarah says. “You put your head down and do what you do and suddenly they all come out at once.”

In person, Sarah is graceful, self-effacing and strikingly glamorous. Part of her success as an actor is to make you forget all that. While she shines as a leading lady, her real talent is as a character actor, crafting roles that are flawed, unpredictable, even gawky.

The Dressmaker makes a virtue out of such unpredictability. On the surface it’s a snappy and savage revenge comedy, but director Jocelyn Moorhouse builds in elements of classical tragedy, musical and spaghetti western. It’s also an all-too-rare thing – a crowd-pleasing Australian film that’s as clever as it is fun.

Bianca C. Ross is the author of the Herbert Peabody children’s book series, which teaches children about farming and food production.

Bianca used to work in marketing for the food industry, which led her to writing the books.

“I did a research project for frozen yoghurt with some kids, and one of them asked me why there was a cow on the packet,” Bianca says. “I said, ‘Well, there’s milk in frozen yoghurt, and milk comes from cows’ and this little boy looked at me and said, ‘No, milk comes from a carton in the supermarket’.”

That conversation stayed with her, and years later she decided to act on it. “I created a character for children who’s fun and engages kids and helps connect them with their food and understand where their food comes from,” she says.

Bianca lives in Toorak, and enjoys all the fresh foodie delights to be found there.

Manhattan. I love their coffee, it’s fabulous, there’s a wonderful barista there. I also love

I love power walking and there is no better place than in among beautiful trees and stunning homes. There’s a few beautiful lemon trees in front yards around the place, and seeing food growing helps my cause.

The reality My therapist Fiona tucks me into the bed-like treatment table and starts to work on my face.

She applies a cleanser first and then uses a resurfacing wand to exfoliate my skin.

Next a light peel is applied and left on for a few minutes. The word peel sounds scary to me – but I hardly notice it and, from what I’m aware, I didn’t shed layers.

We’re then on to the fun part – extractions.

Fiona uses a special tool to get rid of all the impurities. This feels kind of prickly at first but once I get used to it, it feels fine and I start to imagine all the gunk that must be getting sucked from my face.

More hydrating solutions are added, and then we get sci-fi. Fiona fits a mask that beams LED light on my face, and says, “It’s going to be very bright” before she turns it on, which was kind of an understatement. I settle in and let the light do its work on my fine lines and uneven skin tone.

At the end of the treatment, Fiona shows me all the dead cells and dirt that have come off my face, which wasn’t too much … but still enough to slightly turn my stomach.

The pay-off My skin feels super-soft and hydrated and I walk around for the rest of the day glowing (which could possibly be an after-effect of the LED mask).

WOULD I DO IT AGAIN?

Who’s behind the counter?

How we met

Merryn Snare and Margaret Whitehead have lived next door to each other in Surrey Hills for more than 20 years. They bonded over their children, love of animals and similar ethics.

The first time we met was when Marg and the family moved in and I said, “Welcome, I live over the fence”. My first impressions were they seemed a nice family; I got a comfortable feeling that they’d moved next door.

The relationship has been one of friendliness and co-operation, keeping an eye out if anyone needs it. We had an open-door policy that our kids could go into each other’s houses after school if they were home alone.

Marg invites me in for dinner every so often, which is lovely. We occasionally go out for lunch because we both work from home.

On really hot days I say feel free to come over and have a swim. One of the nicest evenings we’ve had is when it was stinking hot a couple of summers ago and half our street lost power. We both had no air-conditioning or fan, so we sat outside drinking a bottle of champagne by my pool. I had about nine ducklings in the pool and possums were coming out of the trees to drink from it. It got too hot and we got in the pool with them.

To have a neighbour that you can have fun with but also trust, admire and respect is invaluable. ●

I remember first meeting Merryn when I was showing my father my new house and she was in her beautiful garden. She introduced herself and was very welcoming. I thought, “There’s a lady who takes pride in her place; I think she’ll be a good neighbour to have”.

Merryn has never been intrusive but if ever you need anything, she’s there. From when my children were young, she has always offered for us to go over and use her pool.

Some of the nicest times I’ve had with her have been when we’ve been sitting in her yard around her beautiful pool chatting and enjoying each other’s company.

Our children are similar ages and went to the same local primary school, but I think we bonded over more than that. Merryn and I always understood each other and had the same life view and attitudes. We do all the neighbourly things – feeding animals, watering gardens and taking in mail.

Once I was locked out of my house and she came over with a ladder and held it while I climbed up to a window on the second storey and let myself in. My husband goes away a bit and to know someone’s there who would drop everything for you if something is needed, means a lot to me. Merryn is such a strong, hard-working and independent woman. ● CHLOE BOOKER

elbourne business entrepreneur and Bond Bar owner Ozzie Kheir spends occasional weeknights living in his 90-square-metre penthouse atop the Adelphi Hotel in Flinders Lane. The modern suite is filled with bespoke furniture and lighting, original pieces designed by Denton Corker Marshall (who started the hotel more than two decades ago) and floored with zigzag carpet and boards that weave across this ideal city pad. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that Ozzie is part-owner of the Adelphi Hotel, which he took over 18 months ago.

My favourite thing Photograph of son Lenni. This was taken on a summer’s day in our backyard. Lenni (aged 3) wanted to go the snow but, of course, it was summer so I bought him a snow machine and I took this photo of him playing with the fake snow.

We purchased this floor lamp from TVRM. I love the contemporary look of this functional piece. We ended up buying the lamps for all the rooms in the hotel – not just the penthouse. They cost around $400.

When our horse Protectionist won the Melbourne Cup last year, it was an incredible feeling – especially when you don’t expect to win.

At the time my wife was pregnant with our second child (Audrey Rose, eight months) and I secretly hoped she would be pregnant again this year before the Melbourne Cup to bring back that lucky streak.

Maryanne Lillecrapp is a Sydney artist who regularly paints the winner of the Melbourne Cup. She took three months to do this hand painting of Protectionist. It hangs in the apartment and is a great reminder of the day.

Eric Gorr and his pharmacist wife Beverley had their new home in Gilbert Grove – then Murrumbeena, now rezoned as Carnegie – built by 1965 in time to welcome their youngest child, a baby sister for David and Jon. “Our house had a rock garden out the front, a den, vertical wood panelling with a nearly invisible door and my parents’ beautiful bedroom had embossed wallpaper and blue carpet that changed colour when you pushed it back with your hand,” Libbi says.

“It was the days when see-saws were still planks of wood that went up and down.

Sometimes when we were playing on the see-saw in Packer Park, my brother David would just get off when I was at the top and I’d slam down into the ground. Maybe that’s why they redesigned them.

“Behind Gilbert Grove was a place called Baker’s Paddock and it was just that, a paddock, and now it’s a big housing estate. Local kids used to drive their cars round and round that paddock way before they were licensed. I remember once dad bought a trail bike home and David dinked me down to Baker’s Paddock and we got pulled over by the local constabulary. David had to get dressed in his school uniform and go down to the police station for a caution.

“Summer would be spent making whirlpools in the Clark’s pool in the backyard, enticing mum to play a game of totem tennis and waiting for the Mr Whippy van to come around.
