etty Churcher had the most wonderful eyes. Bright, twinkling, amused blue eyes that captured you in a lively and steady gaze. She looked at the world around her with fascination and care, and very little escaped that gaze.

And Betty Churcher also had a wonderful eye: that rare, fugitive quality of seeing through to the truth in an instant, of knowing a great artwork from a good one, and of being able to see the world and the vision of the artist through the paint, through the canvas and into the very soul of creativity.

In her final years, Betty Churcher was also going blind. It was a miserable irony, and when this much-loved artist, teacher, gallery director and author died last week at the age of 84, the sight she took with her, one she shared so generously with all Australians, is one we will likely never see again.

Betty Churcher was an educator. She started as a student with a precocious talent for drawing, studying art in London, those voracious eyes opened to the world of great art. But for all her adult life she taught art and, as director of our national gallery, she taught the people of Australia how to see. She knew no higher calling.

As the first and so far only woman director of the National Galley of Australia, Churcher unapologetically regarded the marquee-title exhibitions – which earned her the part-derisive, part-affectionate moniker Betty

Blockbuster – as mass classes in art education. Growing up in Brisbane in the ’30s and ’40s, she once told me, there was “just nothing” and in the excitement of the large-scale exhibition that came to town with all the thrill of the circus she saw an opportunity to provide for the public a portal into another world that was denied her as a young woman.

The fact that these blockbusters earned money was a bonus; that they have become an adopted feature on the calendar of every art institution around the country only shows her enduring fearlessness as an administrator.

She was the polar opposite of the fearsome man she replaced as director of the NGA. The James Mollison era was an enormously impressive one. And while he was greatly respected, Churcher was deeply loved. She not only wanted a formidable collection and institution, but she wanted to make as many people as possible fall in love with the works as she had.

However the art community will remember her as someone who genuinely, deeply loved what they did.

She just loved art. As deceptively simple as that sounds, for many it’s a vanishing trait. All the artists to whom I have spoken are grieving for a woman who trained as an artist, married an artist, had a son who became an artist, and gave over an enduring sensitivity to people who make things. That’s just not the case with all arts administrators.

As Betty Churcher’s eyesight began to fade so, too, did her hope that age and infirmity would not rob her of her most important sense of all. She had such a great eye – a keen understanding of a good picture that was born of both instinct and training, and her judgment was unerring – but the shadows were closing in. She described it to me in 2007 as “midnight sitting on my shoulder” and in that compelling image I could feel her despair at the curtains being drawn.

She nonetheless went on to make more television and produce more books, including her marvellous final publication, Australian Notebooks – an educational textbook masquerading as a beautiful, hand-drawn journal; the teacher simply couldn’t help herself.

Australia will always need great art teachers; our sometimes awkward, often defensive relationship with art requires that kindly and visionary educator to take our hand and show us the sheer delight that comes from spending time with beautiful, moving, challenging things. I think the reason we love and revere our national art teachers so much is that we know how deeply we need them, and how well they have served us. Betty Churcher may well always be our most loved, most favourite teacher of all. \

eta Searle’s story is one of resilience, perseverance and the refusal to be cowed by boys at school who bullied her for playing sports traditionally associated with boys and men – sports such as football and cricket.

Some of these bullies may well barrack for St Kilda and know that the girl they bullied now works at the Saints as a development coach, the first woman appointed to the senior coaching panel of an AFL club.

“From the first week it was almost like I was a part of the furniture,” Searle says of the welcome she received from St Kilda. She notes the club has two women on its board and three women in executive roles.

“It’s about getting balance [and ideas] right,” Searle says. “It’s about inclusion and diversity. If I was a coach, I wouldn’t employ people who were exactly like me because what are we going to bring to the table? You bring in skills you don’t have so together you can go forward.”

After a long career as a player and coach in women’s leagues, Searle spent time as an assistant coach at Port Melbourne in the VFL, working with the head coach, former Hawthorn star Gary Ayres, who would become a mentor and, she says, her champion.

She left that role in 2013, not out of a lack of passion –

playing again at 20 when she found out there was a women’s competition (the Victorian Women’s Football League).

“When I started playing [as an adult], my immediate friends I told, and eventually they all started playing, but in the bigger environment I didn’t go to work and say, ‘I play women’s footy’. Now it’s well-received and widely accepted and there’s a lot of fathers engaging their daughters in it.

“It’s healthy and it [builds] confidence. [Kids] walk into a school now and say, ‘I play footy’ and it’s, ‘Oh, really.’ You’re the cool kid now.”

Did that experience help her later? “I’ve no doubt.

Obviously I’m resilient, strong, lots of things that have occurred in my life that have contributed to me being where I am. That was one thing that shaped me, and there were others, in terms of my work ethic.

“I wasn’t the brightest tool in the shed so I had to work really, really hard. And, as it turned out, if you work hard enough for long enough, things do turn around, and so all of a sudden in year 12 I’d gone from struggling my way through high school to getting great marks and going to uni.”

She studied physical education and in 1996 started teaching at Brighton Secondary College. Over the next few years she coached the VWFL club Darebin to five

She was contacted by a couple of clubs and had two interviews. Then St Kilda rang, telling her it needed a development coach.

Two months later she started at the Saints, helping other coaches and relaying messages to players on match days.

Her dream was alive again.

Searle knows she’s a product of perseverance and self-belief. “I have always been prone to hard work.

That’s just the way I was wired, I think. If you want to do something, you’ve just got to keep persevering and find a way. There’s no doubt it’s tough, but it’s tough for any working woman, tough for any working single woman. The fact that I’m in AFL doesn’t make it tougher, I don’t think.”

She is proud of being a role model, especially for her daughter. “Tessa certainly gets the magnitude of it. She’s proud and she’s impressed.

“It’s about in 10 years’ time, what legacy is she going to see? I’m thinking in terms of role modelling, how you can do things that you want to do if you keep persevering and working hard and put yourself out there.

“There’s no doubt that from the time I started coaching to where I am now, I’ve had to put myself outside my comfort zone numerous times. I think it’s important that you need to go outside your comfort zone to develop and do things that you like.”

Her job with the Saints is certainly a pioneering role.

Former St Kilda coach Stan Alves has said of Searle: “This girl can go to the next step. She can be the groundbreaker.”

“It was never from the viewpoint of doing anything like that,” says Searle. “For me that’s a really nice by-product of it all. The fact that it’s making opportunities easier for other women coming through, the fact that other women are taking up coaching and seeing that it perhaps can be a career pathway, is fantastic. I feel a sense of responsibility, certainly, to carry that out.”

She gets a lot of requests to talk and do clinics. “I’d like to get to as many of them as possible. If it helps give confidence to young ladies coming through, then I think that’s a really powerful tool.”

What role does gender play in her work? “For me, I go to work every day and work with two coaches who are male, and 46 [players], all male. I don’t go to work thinking, ‘They’re men and I’m a woman’. I go to work thinking, ‘I’ll do my job and they do theirs and we all get along really well’.

I don’t see it as a gender thing at all. I think the gender part of it comes from the outside media … You know, at work I’m just a coach.”

Did she find the culture at the club female-friendly?

“I’ve always been openly welcomed and supported by everybody and treated fairly and respectfully,” she says.

“From the moment I walked in the door at St Kilda, I felt extremely comfortable.”

Searle’s role this year will be developing the club’s young list and working with St Kilda’s associated VFL team, Sandringham. Do the young players approach her the same way they would a man? “They treat me as a person, a person they respect. And if you respect a person you treat them for what they are, and that’s exactly what I get down there.”

Does she dream of being senior coach one day? “It’s a footy term, isn’t it – take each day as it comes. If I could stay in footy for a long time I’d be really happy. My job firstly is to be the best coach I can for St Kilda and try to stay involved as long as I can. To me it’s about continually growing as a coach and as a person.

MY VIEW \ KATRINA HALL ON THE TRACKS OF HER LIFE

T

he minute I got off the plane in Adelaide the Paul Kelly song of the same name popped into my head and it never left for the two days I was there.

And it did occur to me, walking around those very well-planned Adelaide streets, that a lot of people might suffer from song association problems brought on by Kelly’s music. I have them frequently when I’m at the MCG, Kings Cross, and the song about his baby who never let him sleep was on high rotation in the middle of the night around here for a while.

And here’s a really embarrassing admission. Every time I change the sheets on my bed, a Bob Seger song about someone living inside someone else’s heart, comes into my head. From out of nowhere.

It was the soundtrack to the ’80s movie About Last Night, and it played out in a scene where Demi Moore changed the sheets on the bed she shared with Rob Lowe and, as lame as it sounds, that moment and

that song has just stuck, maybe because About Last Night was ridiculously aspirational for us girls back then, in our early 20s, who thought shacking up with someone even remotely like Rob Lowe would have been something pretty exciting (still might, if I’m honest).

And making fettuccine with pecan dressing (sad I remember so much from that film) for darling Rob on New Year’s Eve, working in advertising, hanging out at the baseball, you know, it all looked like a bit of a cool life because the reality was I spent most of my days back then out ridiculously late and in a whole bunch of

grungy Melbourne pubs, which meant I barely managed to see daylight on weekends, so doing any kind of linen washing probably was worth putting a soundtrack to.

I do need to say here quite emphatically that my view on the realities of domestic cohabitation have changed considerably, and changing sheets on a shared bed is now most definitely not soundtrack worthy, film-worthy or even note-worthy.

Bob Seger, Paul Kelly – those guys have a lot to answer to. And Cyndi Lauper: my beloved says every time he thinks of his first girlfriend, Girls Just Wanna Have Fun comes into his head, because that’s what she told him was the case, in all seriousness, like it was her anthem, or her excuse, for what I don’t know – that crazy perm, that bright red bubble skirt perhaps.

I’ve seen the photos.

Anyway, song associations can be very hard to shake.

Every morning, when the kids get up, it’s Good Morning Sunshine often replaced soon after by Don’t Bring Me Down. And I do wonder how many parents know the words to the Frozen soundtrack, because Let it Go can be a useful song for a range of situations including driving, housework, and finding an empty packet of Mint Slices that you’ve hidden and someone else has found.

don’t like to be so vulgar as to discuss the bill up front.

Gastronomy is about more than the price of a meal.

But the latest edition to this 161-year-old pub offers a damn good, value-for-money dining experience. The service was exemplary (thanks Zoe), the food is the gastro pub concept that Melbourne skates over in socks, and the makeover of this fine old gent is respectful and restrained.

Please don’t stop reading and dive for the phone (that would be crass). It’s polite to know a little more about your hosts. At the helm, and in his first ownership venture, is Iain Ling, a UK-born hospitality professional who acquired some of his finesse at Fortnum and Mason greengrocer and Roka Japanese restaurant in Fitzrovia in London. In Melbourne, he polished his craft at MoVida Aqui for a few years. He and wife, Stella (ex The Botanical and Roka), opened the revamped Hotel Lincoln in November.

Ling apologises for the cliché, but says he fell in love with “the bones of the place” as a regular patron about six years ago. His refurbishment pays homage to the framework and the history of this 1854 corner pub.

The stiffness and formality of white leather chairs has been replaced by bare timber tables, casual chairs and a lick of flinty, stone-coloured paint. Walls and bar stools wear a smart shade of steel blue that accents the original jade-green tiling, while historical wall murals and polished timber finishes add warmth and character rather than stealing the show.

In the kitchen, Lachlan Cameron shows the stripes he earned at MoVida Aqui and Supernormal while confidently adding his own flair and imagination to a blank canvas, with brushstrokes that sweep across Asia and the Mediterranean.

Spanner crab, tucked prettily into a corn cracker skirt, is the kind of airy dish I’d eat daily. Barely coated with balsamic vinegar, chives and a dollop of aïoli, the seafood rests on the delicate cracker made with tapioca flour and juiced corn that’s been dehydrated and then fried until crisp. It’s unlike any kind of pub fare the Lincoln has ever served, I’ll bet.

In the only naff reference to its pub lineage, the menu is divided into beer-glass sizes – 7oz, schooner, pint and pot, equating to small, medium, large and side dishes.

Edamame with flaky kelp salt and the crab and corn crackers are on the 7oz list, with a baked fig combo that will long remain among my memorable mouthfuls.

The halved fig lolled on a pillow of lightly acidic sheep’s milk yoghurt, draped with the thinnest slice imaginable of guanciale (cured pig’s cheek). The caramelised meat added a savoury element and a layer of fat to an intensely sweet drizzle of honey and a finishing nip of muscatel vinegar. Hardly pub grub.

Zoe Clements (another MoVida Aqui alumni) amended the portions intended for two to suit our table of three. I am grateful I didn’t have to share either my corn cracker, or that divine fig.

OF A SKINNY CHEF JANE ROCCA meets Italian culinary superstar Massimo Bottura

assimo Bottura has been described as the Jimi Hendrix of the kitchen and, while this avant garde and award-winning chef is creating a colourful soundtrack of his own, he has drummed up plenty of attention thanks to his Modena restaurant, Osteria Francescana, being named number three in last year’s list of the world’s Top 50 restaurants.

The 52-year-old chef puts modern Italian dining in a new headspace, deconstructing traditional meals and plating up artistic diversions. There’s a hint of molecular magic and a nostalgic nod to Modena’s slow-food movement in his exquisite dishes.

Modena is in the northern Italian region of Emilia-Romagna, renowned for its ParmigianoReggiano cheese, cured meats and balsamic vinegar.

It’s an area steeped in culinary tradition, which is what appeals to Bottura. But while he respects the past, he packages familiar dishes into a modern dining experience. Or, as he puts it, “presenting tradition as seen from 10 miles away”.

So childhood mortadella sandwiches are transformed

into gastronomic foam on just-baked bread while his version of his grandmother’s bollito misto is reinvented to retain vitamins and the sweet aroma of yesteryear, but gently cooked to keep the goodness intact.

“I get lost in nostalgia,” says Bottura, in Melbourne recently to promote his latest cookbook Never Trust A Skinny Italian Chef Chef.

“I save nostalgia for Christmas Day, then it’s all about the family. I love it but I can’t get trapped in it. I am a man that is always projecting into the future.”

This is Bottura’s fourth cookbook. In it he highlights his deepest passions – food and art, which are interconnected in his world.

He says he draws as much inspiration from artists as he does from the ingredients he chooses for his Italian delicacies.

Osteria Francescana is always heavily booked; everyone, from tourists to celebrities, wants to experience his original dishes, which include recomposed lasagna or a compression of pasta and beans served in a shot glass.

Each dish at Osteria Francescana is a reconstruction of a memory, an idea and, more often than not, a play on words; where else would you find meals named ‘Chicken chicken chicken where are you?’

“I am all about culture. It’s the main ingredient in my cooking. It’s the biggest challenge for me because I try to discourage young chefs from joining the kitchen, to get out there and gain some life experience and then come back,” he says.

So where does a guy who presides over the world’s third best restaurant choose to dine when he’s not cooking himself?

“I enjoy many kinds of experiences, but I certainly want to taste food that is made with passion and love,” he says.

“I am always open for surprises and the unexpected when I dine out. If you think you know everything, you don’t go anywhere.”

While in Melbourne a few years ago, Bottura noticed the abundance of restaurants using dashi in their kitchens. It took him by surprise. “I was like, this is not Japan. This is Australia. Why do I find myself tasting all these dashi variations?

Why aren’t these people making more dishes out of crocodile and kangaroo and cooking something that goes deep into their culture? I know this might shock some people, but it’s important to explore who you are when you run a restaurant. Chefs have the chance to really push new boundaries if they’re willing,” says Bottura, who will also be a guest on Channel Ten’s MasterChef this season.

Bottura trained under Alain Ducasse and spent

a summer with Ferran Adrià, going on to pursue his culinary dream in New York before opening his restaurant in 1995. It was in New York that he met his wife, Lara Gilmore. The couple tied the knot in 1995 and have two children, Alexa, 18, and Charlie, 14.

While contemporary art inspires him, and his home and restaurant are packed with original paintings and photographic works, music also informs his palate – everyone from Lou Reed to Bob Dylan amplifies his message.

“I love music. I own more than 12,000 records and I listen to everything from punk to jazz to post-punk,” says Bottura.

He went to London at 18, chasing a punk rock adventure, seeing bands such as Dead Kennedys and Siouxsie and the Banshees. He even spent a night in jail for burning public rubbish bins with some larrikin travel buddies.

For someone who once said there are three things you can’t tamper with in Italy – football, the Pope and your grandmother’s recipes – Bottura certainly seems to be trying his best to do the last one. Directed by Rachel Perkins, the episode plays out as a crime drama that focuses on the victim, rather than the procedure.

The reality of post-rape care is dealt with frankness, as are attendant issues of blame, shame, race and class. As Lorraine, Deborah Mailman is astonishing. A scene following the attack, in which she phones home to check on her kids before reporting the rape to the police, is one of the most powerful moments of Australian TV in years. Mailman’s performance is a masterclass in nobility and defiance against terrible odds.

Redfern Now will be much missed. It’s hard to think of another Australian series so concerned with showing us our nation as it is, not as we might like to idealise it. Tough but never gruelling, and as affectionate as it is honest, this is world-class television. \

A sunken German U-boat, loaded with Nazi gold, is the treasure at the heart of this rather grubby heist film. Laid off by his salvage company, submarine captain Robinson (Jude Law) recruits a rag-tag crew of Russians and Brits, borrows a rickety Soviet sub and sails out into the depths of the eponymous sea. It isn’t long before tensions bring the voyage to a crashing halt.

Halfway between Ocean’s Eleven and Das Boot, this is a fairly joyless thriller. A sense of gloom pervades, both literal and political. These men are bottom-rung workers, exploited and discarded, and out for revenge.

Law is quietly charismatic, despite being shackled with a tricky Scottish accent, but his crew of desperate men are sketched in broad and ugly strokes. Only Ben Mendelsohn stands out, as the terminally unbalanced Fraser.

Thankfully, the direction is tight, the submarine setting is claustrophobic and there are some extraordinarily tense set-pieces. \

The third LP from Ireland’s Villagers strips away the broad scale of 2013’s {Awayland} for a more intimate, brooding approach. Gone are the offbeat pop songs and, with them, much of the experimentation that has made Conor O’Brien’s work so distinctive.

It’s a risky move. Relying on little more than voice, guitar and piano, the effect is akin to a magician casting off his bag of tricks and remaining centre stage.

Thankfully, O’Brien is a deft enough songwriter to manage a more subtle appeal to the heartstrings.

Songs such as The Soul Serene have a fragile quality, but are no less hypnotic for their quietness. The gorgeous, swooning Hot Scary Summer recalls Bright Eyes’ Lua with its sparse instrumentation and threadbare romance. Few tracks have the immediacy of Nothing Arrived (a standout from the last album), but the minimalism brings a sort of timelessness. eorgia Papadopoulos does nothing by halves. Whether she’s travelling the world, creating mouth-watering candy buffets or preparing maths lessons at Sacré Cœur, this multitalented educator gives it 110 per cent.

Since growing up in Melbourne’s tight-knit Greek community, Papadopoulos has loved a challenge and never been afraid to try something new. This applies to all aspects of her life, including her teaching, hobbies and passion for fascinating places.

Each year Papadopoulos and her husband, George, visit destinations as diverse as Hawaii, New Zealand, the US, Greece, Turkey and Israel, which they first saw during the Gaza conflict.

When her travel papers had a different surname to her husband’s, Israeli officials suspected they were journalists moonlighting as a married couple. But they made it through to see Christ’s birthplace, Bethlehem, and Jerusalem, where Jesus died on the cross.

Both sites were steeped in history and had churches dedicated to many religions. It looked and felt sacred.

“We didn’t realise how special this place was until we were in the plane leaving,” Papadopoulos says. “We actually went where Jesus was born.”

The unscripted adventure was one of many rich life experiences that have helped this driven young woman develop into a compassionate and empathetic teacher who loves helping her students thrive.

Papadopoulos, 35, grew up in Pascoe Vale South with an older brother, Sam, now an English and humanities teacher. Their Greek-born father ran a Greek school and their mother, who was born in Melbourne of Greek heritage, worked for the Commonwealth Employment Service.

From a young age, Papadopoulos embraced her heritage through Greek school, dancing and youth groups. She loved being around people, joining in and taking the lead. “I was very Greek in many ways,” she says. “Australian as well.”

Papadopoulos attended St Fidelis’ Catholic Primary School in Coburg and did years 7 to 10 at the Academy of Mary Immaculate before completing years 11 and 12 at Lowther Hall in Essendon. School was fun but

Papadopoulos, who loved maths and science, did not consider teaching as a career.

If anything, she resisted the idea because the extended family already had five teachers, including her father.

Besides, she already had more than enough on her plate.

As an active Greek youth group member, Papadopoulos helped organise social events and conferences and served as vice-president for Victoria and Tasmania. She also worked part-time at Dick Smith and learned and taught Greek and Bollywood dancing.

Leaning towards a career in engineering, Papadopoulos was one of about 10 women among several hundred men when she studied it at RMIT. Majoring in communications technology, she did well but graduated at a time when jobs in her field were scarce.

“maths is about problem solving, challenging yourself. this is what happens in any job” Her sense of adventure turned the lack of opportunity into a positive through a four-month trip to Canada, the US and Europe. It was eye-opening, exhilarating and sparked a life-long love of travel. “I booked my tickets without telling anyone,” Papadopoulos says.

Among other things, she found herself in New York less than a year after September 11, 2001. Security was tight and the atmosphere was still surreal.

“There was a really eerie feeling. You could still see the effects. That was a really powerful moment.”

Seeing the world helped clarify her life direction.

Papadopoulos decided she wanted to teach and, upon her return, she completed a diploma of education at the Australian Catholic University.

During her teaching rounds she met George, now 39, who was working as an IT technician at St Bernard’s

College in Essendon. He later worked for the ANZ bank before becoming a funeral director after his mother died and he decided he had an aptitude for helping the bereaved.

“He just one day turned around and said to me, ‘I would like to do that job’,” Papadopoulos says. “I think it really helped him with the healing process.”

In 2004, soon after graduating, Papadopoulos started her dream job at Sacré Cœur in Glen Iris. The school is now into its 127th year of educating girls in the tradition of St Madeleine Sophie Barat, founder of the Society of the Sacred Heart. A Sacred Heart education has five goals: a personal and active faith in God, a deep respect for intellectual values, the building of community as a Christian value, a social awareness that impels to action and personal growth in an atmosphere of wise freedom.

Papadopoulos felt at home as soon as she entered the historic campus, where imposing period buildings contrast with its modern facilities.

“I just knew this was the right environment for me,” she says. “It felt right. I fell in love with the place.”

he first year was challenging, as it is for most new teachers. “Even though you do teaching rounds, it’s still not the same,” she says. “It is your class; you need to prepare the lessons. The first year is the hardest.

You are tired, you are trying to adjust.”

Once she settled in, with the support of generous colleagues and mentors, there was no stopping her.

Papadopoulos and her fellow mathematics team members have since worked on making the subject more appealing and moving students past the negative mindset that some of the girls experience.

Their teaching methods are a far cry from the traditional “chalk and talk”. Open minds are encouraged and open-ended questions might have several potential answers, which places the emphasis on problem solving, a general skill that all students need to develop.

Rather than labelling branches of mathematics according to their difficulty, Papadopoulos talks about different types and the purpose and relevance of each.

“It’s really important to have the right mindset,” she

says. “Our teaching continues to evolve and this has affected the way the students perceive maths.”

Papadopoulos and the team, led by head of mathematics, Caroline Brown, have largely based their work on the theories of US psychologist Carol Dweck, who stresses the importance of a “growth mindset” that allows people to believe their basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work. Brains and talent are just the starting point.

Those with a fixed mindset believe that their basic qualities, such as intelligence or talent, are fixed traits.

This mindset can prevent those who believe they can’t do maths from even trying, or recognising their own Alumnae achievement in developing greater understanding.

“Sometimes students feel that they need to learn in a certain way,” Papadopoulos says.

“We’re really trying to move away from the whole idea that this is the only way you can solve a problem.

We want them to explore with a growth mindset.

Everyone can be good at maths. Thinking your way through challenging tasks helps to develop greater thinking capacity.”

Last year Papadopoulos, Brown and colleague Marj Abbey travelled to New Orleans for the US National Council of Teachers of Mathematics conference, where they met Boaler and further enhanced their knowledge of the latest techniques.

They stayed in a house in suburban New Orleans, which is still recovering from Hurricane Katrina, visiting two of Sacré Cœur’s sister schools and touring areas still devastated by the 2005 storm and floods.

“You can only imagine about how hard it would have been,” Papadopoulos says.

It was one of many powerful moments during her travels. In 2006, while attending a World Council of Churches conference in Brazil, she also met Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

Last year, after returning from New Orleans, Papadopoulos presented at Australian Council for Educational Research and Mathematical Association of Victoria conferences, winning the outstanding presentation award at the ACER conference with Brown and Abbey.

At school, she uses her natural and well-honed people skills to show girls they can enjoy maths and be good at it. “It’s not just about learning formulas,” she says.

“Maths is about problem solving, challenging yourself.

This is what happens in any job. You are given a challenging task and you need to work on that task. We want the students to focus on the process and develop the skills to be resilient.”

When she isn’t teaching or travelling, Papadopoulos somehow finds time to run a small business, Eudora Creations, with close friend Jenny Tona. Indulging their creative side, they design and make mouth-watering candy buffets and bombonieres.

It makes life even more hectic, but Papadopoulos wouldn’t have it any other way. “I’ve always been busy,” she says. “It’s just me. I like to be active. W

hat kind of room would entice your children into the study? How about one with a gigantic hammock?

The magical spaces in Tower House were tailor-made for a couple and their young twin boys. The renovation and alterations by Andrew Maynard Architects, a practice with a reputation for thinking outside the box, have created a home that makes you want to linger.

Architect Andrew Maynard describes the Alphington house as like the Tardis – small on the outside, large on the inside. The façade of the original weatherboard doesn’t reveal its secrets, but the shingled tower next to the house signals something is afoot.

Shaped like a rocket ship, or perhaps a sharpened pencil, the tower is at peace with its leafy suburban setting. Nor does it dominate the street. A nearby fir tree provides scale, like a taller sibling.

However, the space within defies a ready label.

A curved stair of fibreglass grating that looks like giant Lego reaches to the hammock. Bookshelves in the same material stack to the ceiling. The truth is, you couldn’t reach the highest shelf unless you were a giant.

A bit like commissioning an architect, it takes a leap of faith to go out on the hammock. “If I die it’s your fault,” I joke, considering the drop to the boys’ desk one floor below. Maynard grins. He’s already hanging out on the net. “It’s like stepping into the abyss,” says architect partner Mark Austin from the floor below.

I needn’t be nervous. It is a nylon net handwoven by a company called Oxley Nets, with a perimeter made from structural cabling called dyneema – it’s high-performance yacht rigging cable that was installed

by McDonald Marine.

Andrew Maynard Architects has made a habit of exploiting transparent materials, using them to aid conversation in awkward spaces. In Black House – an earlier Fitzroy apartment project – it used a perforated steel staircase. In Tower House, the net is harnessed to allow communication through vertical space.

I moonwalk across the hammock and perch under a large window. My body feels loose and relaxed.

Diagonally through the ground-level window, we watch a kookaburra at the fish pond.

I’m enchanted and disarmed. I feel happy. I can imagine lying down, reading or thinking. It is playful and intimate. Being on the hammock feels slightly illicit, like being in a tree house. This smashes the mould of what a children’s study can be.

The owner says she enjoys coming up with a cup of tea when the boys are at school. “I think it’s a wonderful space. We feel really privileged to have it,” she says.

How do the boys use the hammock? Do they bounce around outrageously? “They’re more likely to take up their iPad or sit side by side and read a book,” she says.

Austin says his six-year-old tried to wrestle on it for a bit – “but then he gave up and treated it like a hammock”.

I ask how adults react. “Some come in and say, ‘Wow! I can’t wait to get up there’. It’s almost as if their inner child is released.”

But not everyone embraces the space. “Other people are more circumspect, and then get a buzz from having gone out. Some see it as a kids’ space, and choose not to try it out,” the owner says. Some people have issues about heights so they choose not to go out on the net.

Elsewhere in the house, the owner’s study has quite a different vibe – in keeping with the architects’ intention to make places for various ways of being, including playful, serious, contemplative or creative.

Affectionately referred to as “the chapel” during the build, the study is tucked away at the end of the house.

Designed as a place for thought and contemplation, the room is lined with dark spotted gum. The floor is

sunken so sitting at the desk gives a feeling of being in the courtyard outside. The desk faces a sliding corner window with an enchanting stained-glass window by designer Leigh Schellekens. The back wall is lined with books, and a concealed chair flips open in the joinery to accommodate visitors. It’s a place for dreaming.

On the other side of the courtyard garden is a bathroom. “You could sit in the study and chat to someone in the bath,” Maynard says.

This house revels in social intercourse. Its external shape is like a miniature village. The unfenced front

garden welcomes neighbours to share the vegie patch.

Like its owners, this house is community-minded.

\ RACHEL BERGER LOOKS FOR PEACE IN NATURE

E

very day we’re encouraged to meet our expectations.

Glossy magazines full of bold fonts and even bolder recipes tell us that we need to learn to ask the right questions, practice effective communication, display a positive attitude, remain optimistic and be “in-the-moment”. It sucks.

Not every day is a good day; some days skim the shine off your smile and it’s hard to put things in perspective.

To quote Frank Sinatra’s lyrics: “That’s life … You’re riding high in April, shot down in May.” During a very gloomy time back in the ’90s I considered quitting the program. Focused on a spectacular ending, I drank a half bottle of vodka and urged myself into the bathroom. I opened the medicine cabinet only to find four damp Beroccas wrapped in tarnished foil and a set of Carmen hot rollers. The Beroccas, having exploded their fizz were glued to the shelf and totally useless. I viewed this as an omen, rolled the Carmens into my hair and pretending the blow dryer was a microphone I belted out my version of Kylie Minogue’s I Should be so Lucky Lucky. Life could only get better from that point.

Around this time, we have feasting and a celebration of life across different religions; Easter for Christians, Passover for Jews, and this weekend orthodox Greeks celebrate their Easter. Apart from humungous amounts of carbohydrates, these times offer an opportunity to start afresh, get things right and be with your family.

But what if you don’t have family or you simply want to be alone somewhere tranquil, away from the hubbub, to find peace, inspiration and refuge from daily obligations. Thankfully there are many different locations that are “sacred” because of their history, beauty or aesthetic appeal. It’s easy to underestimate the importance of beautiful surroundings; it’s not just that a person naturally feels comfortable in the presence of beauty, but the surroundings also raise one’s spirit.

The ancient Corroboree Tree in the north-east corner of Albert Park is one of Melbourne’s sacred locations.

The tree is believed to be one of the oldest living things in Melbourne; a steadfast red gum between 300 and 500 years old, which has been a meeting place for the local Bunurong people since before European settlement. The Bunurong tribe (or Boon Warrung) was one of the four language groups who made up the larger Kulin Nation.

The name Boon Warrung literally means “no lip (or speech)” and is a reference to the way in which speakers expressed the negative, that is “boon”.

The site is still considered sacred and is used by Aboriginal elders for important discussions and cultural business.

Nature is a great teacher, so if you’re finding life a little baffling take a walk behind the historic Junction Oval, wander through bush, native grasslands and a small wetland and you’ll find this ancient tree standing triumphantly defiant against the city’s development. I’m always reassured by its persistence and resilience, I feel welcome and inevitably the walk back brings optimism and changes my point of view. \ boomboom@rachelberger.com

Walk down suburban Kireep Road and discover this wonderland of native trees and wildflowers. Maranoa Gardens (opened to the public 1926) was created when John Watson bought 1.4 hectares of land and began his passion to establish a wildflower garden. Unlike some of Melbourne’s European style gardens, Maranoa was designed to showcase Australian plants – specifically the flora of Melbourne and surrounds.

Different environments range from rainforest to arid rockery, temperate woodland to open heath, a fernery and an indigenous display. \

Perhaps there’s some geomancy voodoo going on here because I’ve always felt a powerful sense of “place” and tradition in these gardens. These are the oldest public gardens in Melbourne, the settlement’s first burial site and the site where the flag was raised to signal an incoming ship. Flagstaff Gardens was the location from which news of Victoria’s separation from NSW was signalled to Melbourne residents with the lighting of a huge bonfire. This mixed stone sculpture (1950, artist unknown) was created to mark the centenary of the proclamation of separation. \

Point Ormond (once known as Little Red Bluff) was another gathering site for the Bunurong before colonisation.

As Myer Eidelson writes in A History of Elwood, the bluff has a mixed and complex history; the traditional owners cooked shellfish in middens and used fires to signal other clans. In 1840 it was the site of St Kilda’s first graveyard and Victoria’s first quarantine station.

Europeans also celebrated their colonial triumphs by lighting beacons on the bluff – in 1851 and 1988, to celebrate the creation of Victoria and Australia’s bicentennial respectively. \

nglehart Homes, one of Melbourne’s most recognised luxury housing brands, is celebrating its 35th anniversary.

A market leader and innovator since its first home design became an instant hit in 1980, Englehart Homes has established an enviable reputation for luxury home design and construction in Melbourne’s inner-east.

The Englehart Group also includes Lucas Morris Homes, which Englehart was associated with in the late 1970s and acquired in the early 1990s. While Englehart Homes delivers individual luxury designs in the $700,000-plus range, Lucas Morris focuses on project homes, also for the luxury home buyer, but with a more affordable price tag, in the $400,000 to $700,000 range.

Typically, the group is not resting on its considerable laurels. It has won more than 100 industry awards, but managing director Ron Englehart and his team continue to drive growth and set new benchmarks.

“At the end of the day, we’re only as good as the last home we have built,” he says.

Englehart Homes’ latest award-winner, The Saville, will represent Victoria in next month’s national Housing Industry Australia awards. HIA Victoria has already judged it the state’s top project home for 2014.

Englehart attributes the growth and success of the business to the approach he had from the start, capitalising on a background in construction and marketing for national and international companies.

“The plans and strategy we put in place in 1980 are just as relevant in 2015. It’s all about satisfying our buyers,” he says.

“Since 1980 we have been working to offer intelligent design and quality materials and craftsmanship at a value-for-money price. Our approach is working as well today as it did when we started 35 years ago.”

Englehart says the group is stronger than ever, continuing to grow and increase turnover. Having

the right people, products, designs and management processes is critical to success.

“Over the years, I’ve seen many builders come and go, but we’ve survived because our creativity and quality is consistent and dependable,” he says. “We are always researching and securing the best designers, trades and craftspeople so we can continue to innovate and meet our own exacting standards.”

Another factor is the importance the group places on market research.

“We talk to everyone who visits our four display homes and I sit in on our sales meetings to listen to their feedback. Careful evaluation helps us formulate the right products and designs for our marketplace,” Englehart says. “We know exactly what is most important to buyers in our market – whether it’s beautifully integrated indoor and outdoor living with zoned kitchen, dining and family living or the fact that there’s little interest in having a separate dining room these days. It’s all important.”

The group is having particular success with the growing numbers of Asian buyers in the luxury home market. Englehart says Asian buyers tend to be exceptionally discerning, attracted by classical design, and to seek quality of craftsmanship and construction, value for money and rigour in management processes.

“We have excellent systems. Every day I can see exactly what progress has been made on all of our building sites, which trades have been on each site and if the build is on track,” he says.

issues before they arise and we can track, measure and evaluate all of our projects.”

One of Englehart Homes’ most spectacular successes has been La Provence, an architect-designed double-storey home with grand provincial French styling that has captured the hearts of many buyers with its mansard slate roof, double casement windows, exacting, elegant symmetry and wrought-iron cresting.

La Provence is one of Australia’s most awarded display homes, having won seven awards, including the Master Builders’ Association national display home of the year and HIA’s best kitchen in a display and best bathroom overall.

The Saville, inspired by American architect Frank Lloyd Wright, is a contemporary single-level design with wide sheltering eaves, a recessed front entry and integrated indoor to outdoor living.
