rett Kirk’s “office” takes your breath away. It’s an open-air café of sorts at a sea bath near Coogee in Sydney. Kirk comes here most mornings after meditation and dropping his children at dancing and other activities.

He has a swim in the sea baths and then snaps open his laptop and writes his book, a guide for young people who might be struggling with adolescence.

There’s a calmness and naturalness here that suits the man.

He tells me a story about how cathartic writing his book has been, and how the pain over the death of a close friend in 2002 had resurfaced. (Jay McNeil, who died from leukaemia).

He has called that moment “the day my heart opened”. “I think we store a lot of things in the energy in our bodies, so to go back and live through it again helps unblock some of that stuff you might be carrying around,” he says.

“I was sitting in a café a week ago thinking about losing my mate and I was openly in tears. I walked away feeling drained, but I needed to go through that. Although I was sitting in the café with people around me, I didn’t really care. I thought I’d worked through that and I was all OK with it, but obviously something was still floating around me that affects me.

“Everyone’s got a story. There are lots of ups and downs. Not all of us have come from backgrounds where you are open and can talk about your emotions.” Clearly Kirk did.

Kirk retired from football in 2010 after 241 games (the last 200 consecutively). He wanted to stay connected so he accepted Channel Seven’s invitation to join the team as a commentator.

With his football brain and desire to analyse what drives us to excellence and spiritual wealth, Kirk is an excellent pick-up.

The boy who grew up in Albury barracking for the Swans and dreaming of playing AFL was known as a footballer who had life in perspective.

He is a Buddhist who meditates daily, and he saw his career at the Swans as an opportunity to grow and learn and teach.

He spent much of last year taking his lessons to young people around the world and plans to spend much of this year bringing them to adults at home.

Last year he spent six months travelling to 20 countries, with his wife and four children, promoting football for the AFL. “I wanted to spend time with my family and the AFL wanted me to do some work, so I went to a lot of footy leagues – in South Africa, India, through Europe, US, Canada. The passion for footy is incredible outside Australia.”

Kirk acted as a resource for the various leagues, taking footy training, speaking to sponsors, mentoring the young. “In South Africa we went into townships where they have nothing.

“You’re on these dirt tracks and you walk in and the kids have come from school, drop their bags, take their shoes off (and kick the footy). In Johannesburg, in a township, they do a program called Footy Wild, which is like Auskick.

“We were doing a handball drill and they started tribal singing and I was in amongst it and started singing myself and bouncing and my heart’s pumping and I thought, ‘This is what sport is all about; this is what it can do for people’.

“In India there were about three or four cricket games being played and 20 metres squared off for the footy.” The skills level?

“Well behind some others places, like Denmark or Canada, who’ve had footy leagues for years.”

He took some coaching clinics in Reykjavik, Iceland, and played a game. “It was crazy. I thought when I finished I wasn’t going to play again but I was convinced to pull the boots on.

“In Europe they play nine a side, play on soccer fields and rugby ovals. The locals are physical and hard at it. Played on artificial turf and pulled up pretty sore the next day.”

Kirk recorded hundreds of interviews on his video camera.

“I asked people what they love about the game. It was kind of on-the-job training.” A documentary of the trip is being made.

Kirk and his wife travelled with their four children, all under six (they are expecting a fifth). “To have that time where there is nothing else, no other clutter going on. Even if we were stuck

Retiring wasn’t a hard decision. “It was a gut feel. I knew my time was up. I didn’t think how it would be when it finished.

All I knew was I wanted to disconnect pretty quickly.” During the trip with his family he had no feelings that he wanted to be “back inside footy walls”. “That part of my journey was over and I’m looking to start something new.”

But when he arrived back in Australia in July last year he felt a strong desire to be involved in some way with footy again. “A lot of it is to do with the camaraderie you have at a footy club and the bonds you make, but the longer I was out, the more I became comfortable with it.”

Did he reflect on his career? “One thing I need to get better at is celebrating or reflecting. I tend to move on pretty quickly from things. It’s my philosophy of trying to be in the moment.”

Getting away from the fishbowl of AFL, Kirk says, helped his perspective on what he wanted to do and “how I really want to make a difference” in helping others exploit their potential.

ut it took a while to get used to no longer playing.

“I’d been very structured, very meticulous in my preparation routine for a long time in football, which was obviously a big part of my life. Travelling, and not knowing from day to day what was going on, drove me a bit crazy. Uncharted territory for me. I tried to keep running and (exercising) but found it difficult at times.

“I remember coming back for the first game I saw and watching Goodsy (Adam Goodes) and Jude Bolton and Ryan O’Keefe, guys I played 10 years-plus with, run out on the ground. I wished I was out there running with them.”

And he missed the routine. “There’s no doubt when players leave the game, some struggle. You go from earning good money and people look up to you and you’ve got a team around you and lots of people to look after you and sometimes you can be in a bit of a bubble, and all of a sudden that’s taken away.

“I’ve got a wonderful wife who keeps me really grounded, a beautiful family. My first thought is how can I protect and care for my family? And what can I best do in terms of getting the balance right in earning the money to support them but also to spend quality time with them?

“My spirituality awareness opened up after I lost a really close mate. I started to ask questions about life. Buddhism resonated with me. Jay McNeil was a mentor to me, guiding me. So if I can offer any help or guidance to young people, I want to do so.”

His Buddhist beliefs helped him in his football. “I feel I’m on my own spiritual path and I draw from lots of different things.

Buddhism (to me is about) not holding on to things, living in the present, letting go of your ego. It helped me as a person.”

There was curiosity among AFL players about Buddhism.

“It was mainly why and how and what. (From) when I started to when I finished, a lot of things have broken down inside the footy club walls and it’s not as macho as it used to be.”

While at the Swans he recommended the books of Eckhart Tolle, especially The Power of Now, to younger players. But it wasn’t just the young ones Kirk guided.

He famously told big firebrand and fellow Swans captain Barry Hall his concerns over Hall’s erratic on-field behaviour, saying he would trust Hall with his children but, because of his volatility, not on the football field.

“I really care about Barry and I think it was wonderful how he was able to finish his career. For me it was standing for something and believing in something. When it all happened at the end it was time to give him some tough love. To say that I cared about him but there are things that are unacceptable.

“I commend him in the way he was able to leave the game, because it would have been a shame if he had left and been remembered for transgressions rather than as a great player.”

Looking back at his own career he remembers fondly his many battles with Brisbane’s Simon Black, with whom he famously swapped jumpers at the end of a game. “Simon Black and I had great contests over a long time. It was always a great test when Simon and I played against each other. We became really good friends afterwards.”

He has always believed football taught good values. “It helped create part of who I am. Especially with leadership.

“When I sat down with kids and adults in South Africa I was talking about what you can learn from the game – discipline, honesty, perseverance. And these things relate to your life and your work life. There are lots of parallels.”

Kirk is interested in helping where he can. “Twelve months ago I went to Sri Lanka with Adam Goodes, Richard Tambling, Brad Sewell, a global reconciliation group, and did some work in Colombo, rebuilding Sri Lanka and analysing what role sport played after the tsunami.”

He has been invited to consult for a group called Bluestone Edge, run by psychologist Pippa Grange, the former general manager of culture and leadership for the AFL Players’ Association. “It’s to do with active leadership, helping to build sound cultures in organisations through ethical thinking,” Kirk says. “(After retirement) I wanted to be stretched and challenged.

I didn’t want to just go into something and not have to think.

Coaching appealed to me, but it was more about extracting potential and helping people build capacity in their selves.”

And the book he’s writing? “It’s targeted at young men. Life’s becoming ever more demanding for young people. I try and provide them with some tools.”

Last year Kirk talked about his philosophy with Judith Lucy in her ABC series on spirituality. He told her the words he used in the affirmations he does during his daily meditation: “As a human being I’m honest, I’m passionate, I’m courageous, I’m disciplined, I have a concentrated mind, I’m compassionate, I’m aware, I’m a good listener, I’m patient, I’m tolerant, I’m adventurous, I’m loving and I’m affectionate, I’m kind, I’m responsible. I am love.”

He said: “I don’t get caught up in my thoughts. I’m not controlled by my ego, I don’t dwell in the past, I don’t worry about the future because the only moment we have is this moment right now.”

Lucy accused Kirk of being perfect, a charge he denied. Lucy said Kirk made her cry, mainly because he was married.

Kirk is quietly inspirational and gentle. It’s been a privilege to enter his calm world. After I left his office I received a text.

’m not entirely sure it has turned us all into narcissists, or stalkers, or people who need to share what they’re having for breakfast. But there is one thing about Facebook I know for certain: if someone is going to post a photo of themselves on their homepage – or any other social-networking apparatus – you can be sure they have selected the very, very best one of themselves they could possibly find.

I’ve recently seen pics of middle-aged women who might pass for 25, and they’ve clearly employed all the photographic tricks. Chins pointed down, turkey necks tucked under and not a single full-body or behind shot to be seen. Botox is not cheap, but Photoshop is. Apparently.

Men do it too. There are plenty of pics out there of 50-year-old dudes peering pensively into cameras they’re clearly holding themselves, night-time shadows falling strategically over wrinkled foreheads.

In fact, my brothers-in-law love to post pics of themselves, six abreast, dressed in their finest Lycra biking gear, and in their minds I know they truly believe they’re putting the very best images of themselves out there for the world to see. No additional commentary from me on this, however, but you get the idea.

In the world of Facebook there are rampant, gratuitous photo posters and there are people who would rather sleep in their own vomit than put a photo of themselves online. But I’m sure both groups would agree that, if you’re going to put a photo of yourself up, you’ve done so because you think it’s a good one.

Someone on my friends list has about 200 pics of herself on her online album, and in every one she’s employing movie-star

poses, chin down, one leg in front of the other. These have all been carefully selected, of that I’m sure. There’s not a single one of her in her pjs nursing a hangover.

And that’s fine, if she’s making the choices. A friend was mortified recently when one of her buddies put a dozen pics of her and their gang frolicking around on the beach on her Facebook page. The pics were tagged, so they then linked onto her own homepage, which can then be viewed by everyone in her own friends list, which happened to include a whole lot of people from my friend’s work.

So there she is, out and about with all her gal pals, in her togs, for everyone and her boss to see. And not one of the pics caught her good side.

I’m the first to admit I’ve googled old boyfriends, colleagues, schoolfriends, even potential tenants. Mostly, I like to snoop on those from my past that I despise, in the hope of discovering things haven’t turned out well for them in the end. So if, like me, the whole world is snooping, we need to learn how to edit (or work the private buttons).

More importantly, anyone holding a photographic device needs to be told, straight up, not to put the photo they’ve just taken of you on Facebook. Not unless you’ve cleared it first, anyway.

And I’m not even talking about images of silly young people passed out drunk on a couch or dressed in drag at a rave. Kids invented Facebook – they can do whatever they want on it. I’m talking about everyday trakky-dack pics taken without consent at someone else’s kids’ birthday parties, or photos taken by nieces at Christmas with you in the background spilling gravy down your face.

Remember, peoples, Russell Brand once posted a photo of Katy Perry, still in bed, mascara gloop in the corner of her eyes, first thing in the morning. She made her first coffees while still at school and then spent 3½ years at a South Yarra local, The Lawson Grove Shop.

For the moment, this bright four-month-old café is attracting Armadale regulars. They’ve embraced its vibrant new menu and are talking up its quality coffee. But co-owner Ruaraidh (pronounced Roorie) Gunn says his ambition is for 8 Days to become a destination café – a place people will cross suburbs to visit, a not-unrealistic goal.

The owners, who include Jason Ennels and Con Racicos, have bought their own Synesso espresso machine rather than using a roaster-supplied one so they can expand their coffee repertoire to include guest roasters. For now though, the Crompton Road house blend and a regular Ethiopian Yirgacheffe single origin are supplied by Five Senses.

As a short macchiato, the house blend is proficiently brewed and berry bright, with a tart pear-like astringency.

The menu includes dishes such as the popular avocado and Persian feta combo on sourdough and an excellent summer-fresh smoked trout salad.

Gunn, a former professional player and coach on the Real Tennis circuit, worked in pubs in Britain 20 years ago, but 8 Days is his first café.

“I’ve perfected my customer service working with weird and wonderful people while running tennis clubs and I like to make sure people are happy,” he says.

There’s a polished, inner-east feel to the slick modern decor at this suburban café.

Charcoal-framed folding windows surround the generous space on two sides and are reflected in the dark shelving behind the pale timber and tiled bar.

For 20 years the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival has been a red-letter event on the calendar of Victorians with a passion for eating and drinking.

So, to celebrate its second decade, the festival has released a book featuring the talents of the internationally recognised chefs who have contributed to its success. Published by Murdoch Books, with an eloquent foreword by Melbourne food writer Michael Harden, the book features an exclusive collection of recipes from participating culinary legends gathered over 20 years.

There’s Shannon Bennett’s sublimely simple mushroom risotto and Fergus Henderson’s classic chocolate ice-cream.

henever I eat a meal in a restaurant – which is quite regularly – I sit there chewing and ask myself: “Is this better than I could make at home?” Much more often than not the answer is yes.

In Melbourne we really are blessed with an abundance of good, often great, eating. Gastronomy is our middle name.

Bistro Gitan, which opened in October, is a welcome new asset to the city’s repertoire of fine diners and its success is not surprising given the restaurant’s pedigree.

A prime South Yarra corner site, the old Fawkner Bistro, is now in the hands of three offspring of the legendary French chef Jacques Reymond. Edouard (ex-MoVida), Antoine and Nathalie Reymond, assisted by their father/partner, have conceived a relaxed and airy bistro with confident service and the sort of food I really couldn’t make anywhere near as well at home.

It takes considerable talent and training to turn out decent French cuisine, and ex-Jacques Reymond chef Steven Nelson obviously has both. Engagingly savvy floor staff spruik his food in a high-ceilinged, quite elegant dining room with plenty of light and a bar that does casual eating and fireside drinks in winter.

Speaking of drinks, there’s ample temptation to be found in Bistro Gitan’s winelist, which picks its grapes from noteworthy vineyards here and in Europe and features a considerate selection of wines available by the glass, 250-millilitre pichet (small jug) and half-litre carafe. There’s also a reserve list for those special moments when you fancy blowing more than 200 bucks on a bottle.

The cellar’s pan-European bent echoes a menu that occasionally deviates from classic French fare to present snacky churros with gruyère, for example, or black Angus beef with churrasco sauce. But the daily special, an intensely Gallic salad of grilled sardines, sautéed lambs’ brains, croutons and sauce gribiche, reveals the kitchen’s true loyalties.

We start small – “a mouthful” according to Gitan’s graduated menu – and order a Hervey Bay scallop with panzella salad. I think that should be “panzanella” but don’t want to out myself as a pedant or a fool by saying so. Besides, my lunch companion, a French swot, has already corrected the entire menu on the blackboard above the kitchen servery. There were only four errors.

Anyway, the scallop is tiny, really just a mouthful, and is paired with a minimalist arrangement of golden croutons, ground olives and tomato slivers glistening in a slick of very good olive oil.

It reminds me of an amuse-bouche except I’ve never paid $8.50 for one of those before. An underwhelming start to an otherwise crack menu.

Six nuggety snails nestle in the dimpled pockets of a palette-shaped dish, swimming in hot garlic butter seasoned with ground almond. The snails are springy and willing sponges of the butter and they explode in the mouth like garlicky bombs.

I’ve never had a croque madame quite like the Gitan version. It’s a sandwich of two fluffy, almost

cake-like slices of grilled white bread packed with chilli jam-smeared blue swimmer crab, palm hearts and a gruyère béchamel. It is rich, sinful, remarkably light.

When the Petuna ocean trout arrives I dive in with a fork and am, momentarily, speechless. The trout comes “a la plancha” from the grill, and the four pumpkin-bright pieces are overlaid with thin cantaloupe slices and underlaid with a fresh horseradish aioli.

The canteloupe steals the show. It’s just stunning with the trout. It seems unusual to serve fruit and fish but, when you think about it, not so unusual. Lemons, tomatoes, oranges and olives can all work beautifully with seafood, and Atlantic at Crown already does that fancy prawn cocktail with cubes of rockmelon jelly.

There’s a nod to the family heritage in a sort of fish casserole called la pôchouse that hails from the Reymonds’ home region of Jura, beside the Swiss border.

A plump white hunk of hapuka has been baked in the oven precisely a point and arranged in a bowl with white

onions, tiny champignons, a smidge of kaiserfleisch and some sorrel. It is a lovely dish, largely because the fish is so perfect. The french fries we order to go with it are catering quality and let the team down a little.

Desserts might range from a simple fromage blanc with sugar and fresh fruits to waffles flavoured with lemon maple syrup and something called pineapple sauce nutella.

We err on the side of safety and go for the special of honey sabayon gratin, so creamy and sweet and slightly torched on top, layered over plump, spectacular cherries and chopped strawberries spiced faintly with cinnamon, star anise, juniper berry and orange rind.

Whatever you and your loved one do, when it comes to Valentine’s wines I like to think I’ve got all bases covered.

My wife and I have always tried to avoid the hustle and bustle of restaurants packed to the gills with swooning young lovers, or the inevitable disappointment of leaving booking a restaurant too late (usually my fault), choosing instead to spend the night in with a good bottle and food to match. It will be the same again this year – having a three-year-old daughter scuppers any spontaneous plans that may arise on the day – and that’s perfect by me.

We’ve been marking special occasions lately with grower Champagne, and I see no reason to change things for the most romantic day of the year.

Champagne producers can be broken into two camps – the big houses and the grower-producers. The Champagnes of the big houses are known worldwide and associated with luxury; think Moet, Veuve Clicquot, Bollinger. They’re the Champagnes that rappers rhyme about. These houses, as they’re known in the Champagne region, don’t grow enough grapes to produce the massive volumes of wine they make each year, so they source grapes from a large number of growers.

Owner-growers – or récoltant-manipulants, to use the French term – make their bubbles using grapes grown on their own vineyards, much the same way as smaller wineries in Australia make their wine.

truly memorable – I’ve found the grower Champagnes have, on the whole, been more interesting and better value.

There are about 19,000 growers with vineyards in Champagne and about 5000 of them produce their own wines. That’s a large number, but the volumes they produce account for less than 5 per cent of the market, and even less in Australia.

The number of grower Champagnes being brought into Australia – one of the world’s largest Champagne markets – is increasing each year, and with the Aussie dollar buying a lot of euros there’s great value to be found. There are some fantastic examples you can find for about $60.

When hitting the town, Tim Cohen of hip new Brunswick restaurant Albert St Food & Wine has a few tips for getting the best out of the wine list on the big night.

Champagne might often be the most expensive wine poured by the glass, but it’s likely to be the best value wine on a list, says Cohen, whose CV includes a stint with Champagne house Vranken Pommery and high-end restaurants Vue de Monde and The Point.

If a restaurant is going to sell glasses of Champagne, it wants to ensure it’s a popular choice. “Champagne should not be heavily marked up,” Cohen says.

If it’s just two of you celebrating a romantic dinner, ordering wines by the glass to suit the food is a good option, too, he says.

Cohen’s final say on making the most of your food and wine experience, wherever you eat, is this: “Trust your instinct and value the sommelier’s advice.

Brigid Brinkley, 22, is an operations team leader at Luna Park and drives the world’s oldest continually operating roller-coaster – the Scenic Railway.

I was in my second year of uni when I got a weekend job at Luna Park. It was always a special place for me when I was a kid. Dad had his work Christmas parties here and I remember those nights when I could go on the rides as often as I liked. So when I needed a part-time job to help pay my way at uni, I figured why not work at a theme park? I started as a ride operator and learnt six or seven rides. My very first ride was the Red Baron – a little aeroplane ride for toddlers.

But it was always my goal to drive the Scenic Railway.

It took me 18 months to get the opportunity to learn how to operate it and I had to do a week’s training program. I read the massive manuals about the operation of the roller-coaster, I learnt every inch of the track and did a full track walk. Then I drove it around empty for four days so I could understand the track and different speeds.

I’ve just finished a bachelor of production at Victorian College of the Arts, where I majored in costume and sets. I’d like to work in theatre one day but when I was offered a job here I grabbed it.

I supervise the rides department, supervise film shoots when they happen here and I operate rides at least once a week.

Summer is the best time here. We get a lot of people wandering in after a day at the beach and it’s very relaxed. And there have been some memorable moments, too.

I remember watching a little boy who’d just been on our Top Drop ride. He hopped off and looked quite ill and I could see he was trying to make it to the nearest bathroom. But there were a lot of people milling around and he couldn’t get anywhere. A lady with a pram was blocking his way – and this boy’s lunch just wouldn’t stay down. He ended up projectile vomiting hotdog all over her. So I quickly helped clean her up – while the boy suddenly felt better and ran off to another ride.

Cleaning up vomit was one of the worst parts of the job when I started, but you become impervious to it after a while. And it doesn’t compare to the best parts of the job. There’s nothing like driving the roller-coaster on a warm summer evening at sunset. I feel pretty lucky then.

David Gazzo, 21, is a volunteer lifesaver at Bonbeach Life Saving Club.

I was six when mum’s friend got myself and a group of friends involved in lifesaving. I did my nipper training at Bonbeach on Friday nights. It was a perfect way to end the week. I’d be in the water, learn about lifesaving and then swim and have a game of cricket. I’ve just done a trip around Australia and I couldn’t wait to get back to the club.

My first job was with Life Saving Victoria in the education department, teaching water safety and CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) at schools. This year I’m studying digital film and television but I still teach water safety at schools, and I’ll remain a volunteer lifesaver. The beach is my favourite place in the summer.

On Saturdays I get to the beach about 12.30pm, earlier on a Sunday. I set up the flags, check the boat and log on to the communications centre at Life Saving Victoria.

If it’s a hot day, we do some patrols handing out sunscreen. In colder weather we might get people setting off flares when they get into trouble in their boats and we help them. We finish patrol between 5pm and 6pm.

One of the perks of the job is using the equipment – the inflatable rescue boats are fun! And I feel a real sense of pride when I’m in my uniform.

Summer jobS life \ This is a busy time for many Melburnians. As the city warms up, SArAh MArinoS talks to them about what they love about their work.

When I was surfing a few years ago, a young boy got caught in a rip on his boogie board. His family was yelling from the beach. I paddled over to him and explained what was happening, told him how to identify a rip and then paddled back to the beach with him.

A couple of times I’ve had to do CPR on people. But that’s part of the interest – never knowing what will happen and being able to help if people are in trouble.

Whenever I go to the beach with friends I’m always looking around to see what’s happening. It’s the same at swimming pools. I see a kid go a bit too close to the water and I keep watching – just in case.

I never know what situations I’ll deal with day to day – lost children, lost dogs, a lost boat out in the water or people stuck in a rip. But I’ve also been involved in rescues when I just happened to be at the beach, noticed someone in trouble and had to bring them back to shore.

I started working at the zoo in 2005 after I saw a job advertised in the newspaper. The role is about developing ways to communicate conservation messages that are interesting and entertaining to guests.

What Melbourne Zoo does is world leading in terms of its conservation, so to be able to deliver conservation messages is a great thing. I feel it’s vitally important to the future of many of the animals we have at the zoo.

In summer I start between 9.15am and 10am. I unlock the Trail of the Elephants for the public and during the day I do a series of presentations, using life-size puppets, about different animals in the zoo. The puppets are quite beautiful, well-crafted and have good mechanisms so they move very well. Although they’re quite large, they are actually very light.

My focus usually is on the elephants and seals. It’s my job to come up with a presentation that gives the audience kernels of information about the conservation of these animals. It’s not about delivering cold, hard facts but more about presenting information so it’s accessible and so people can say, ‘If I just make that little change in how I shop or behave, I can make a difference to this animal’.

This summer we’ve got a campaign encouraging the public to choose phosphate-free detergents. Waste water from our houses ultimately ends up in our waterways and, for the platypus, water high in phosphates increases algae bloom and kills invertebrates important to it.

We have a platypus puppet and I operate that puppet and have developed a short presentation about that.

The most challenging part of what I do is to make what I’m saying and presenting fresh every time. If children don’t like something and it’s boring – they’ll tell you, or they’ll talk to each other and tell each other.

If that happens, I cut to the next part of the presentation that has a more interesting visual aid or I pick up my energy level a bit to get them back on board.

Performing and seeing the sense of wonder in a child’s eyes is also a highlight for me. I can see them take on this understanding that they can be responsible for helping the survival of a species. Or they tap mum and say let’s do this or that to help. I see the younger generation influencing the older generation and wanting to make the right choices to help these animals in the future, and that’s pretty rewarding.

Bringing art to life \

Dodi Rose, 56, has been a volunteer tour guide at the National Gallery of Victoria for seven years.

I was studying art history at the University of Melbourne, and when I finished my degree I heard the NGV was enrolling new guides. I’m passionate about art and I thought taking around tour groups there would be an ideal way of sharing some of what I’d learnt

I work here from December to the end of March, and the rest of the year I run the Melbourne International Animation Festival and work at festivals in London, Estonia and Portugal.

The best part of the job is working in the gardens, particularly later at night when it’s closed to the public. The film starts, people settle down and I have the sense of having the gardens to myself.

I start at the gardens with my crew at 4.30pm. We cordon off the site, and at 5.30pm the production crew arrives and we set up. At 6.30pm the customer service team dust off their smiles and start helping people through the gates. About 8.45pm we roll the ads and the film. Once the film is finished, the production crew pull apart the site and I leave about midnight.

We’ve moved from 35-millimetre films to full digital and there is demand for bean beds now – people no longer sit on the ground like they used to. But the event is still about taking a risk with the weather, sitting under the stars and watching a film on the big screen in the middle of a park.

My favourite films are the classic black-and-white films, such as Casablanca. The funniest moment is when we screened a film called Donnie Darko – about a teenager plagued by visions of a large rabbit. Sometimes people dress up and I was at the entrance gate and saw someone walking towards me in a giant bunny suit. The bunny was wobbling all over the place and my first instinct was that he or she was intoxicated. So I watched the bunny eventually veer off to one side and fall in a pile on the grass. I went to have a chat, expecting someone drunk, and instead I found there were two people in the suit, trying to get in on one ticket. Part of me wanted to let them in for their sheer commitment. \

at university. It was also a chance to see the gallery’s wonderful collection.

I spend three days a week at the gallery during summer. I’ll take our general-collection tour that starts at 11am or the guided tour of The Mad Square exhibition. It features early 20th-century German modern art.

I get to the gallery half an hour before I start my tours and take a walk through to make sure the works are in place and to get a sense of the people who are visiting the gallery that day. During summer we meet lots of tourists from overseas and from the country.

Some days I’ll do three tours lasting about an hour each – one of the hardest parts of the work is fitting everything in during an hour.

My favourite role is taking the indigenous art tour.

I remember taking a number of people who worked in galleries overseas on a tour of that collection and at the end they thanked me for giving them the symbolic meaning of the works that they didn’t have before The best part of what I do is helping people gain a new appreciation or awareness of an artist’s work. They come away with a new way of seeing something. I remember the Ladder to Heaven by Yayoi Kusama and seeing the reaction of children to that installation.

o one really knows how St Valentine’s Day morphed into the saccharine-sweet day of romantic love that we all love to celebrate these days.

The day, honouring one of Christendom’s early martyrs, began in 496AD and was deleted from the Catholic calendar in 1969.

Why St Valentine’s Day was first celebrated is lost in history. What we do know is that the day first became associated with all things romantic in the cliquish and influential circle of Geoffrey Chaucer, the father of English literature, where courtly tête-à-têtes were all the rage in the Middle Ages.

Chaucer was the first to make the association in his poem The Parliament of Fowls: “For this was St Valentine’s Day, when every bird cometh there to choose his mate.”

It was not until the 19th century that the sending of printed cards with pictures of cupids, doves and roses grew popular. The tradition, helped along by commercialism, has morphed into a behemoth day of retail sales following closely after Christmas and Mother’s Day. Whatever people associate it with these days, it’s nice to know there is a day when you can proclaim your feelings for your love and shower him or her with gifts.

Brandon (Michael Fassbender) is charming, handsome and can afford a good suit. He’s also sex-obsessed, spending his top pick nights bedding young women and his days filling his work PC with porn.

We’re never given much reason to like Brandon, but we do. Partly, this is down to his perverse honesty. Director Steve McQueen surrounds him with flawed characters who cling to the illusion of decency. His date Marianne (Nicole Beharie) believes in love despite the evidence, while his boss is convinced he’s a ladies’ man and a family man. But Brandon is a simple creature – he loves sex with the inexorable adoration of a true addict.

Of course, this simplicity comes at the cost of his humanity. Indeed, Brandon seems distressed by anything in the way of an emotional response.

He weeps while watching sister Sissy (Carey Mulligan) sing and finds his seduction patter shattered on realising he actually likes Marianne. Both moments see him seek solace in his addiction. The more human he feels, the further he runs for shelter.

To McQueen’s credit, the film is fiercely unglamorous, but assembled so artistically that we never feel mired in grimness. Neither does the plentiful sex feel particularly prurient. These are the implied obsessions of our society – where sex is used to sell everything from kids’ clothing to Diet Coke – forced into the open.

In place of any romance, McQueen focuses on the uncomfortably physical relationship between Brandon and his sister. At times moving, at times confronting, theirs is a story of two innocents sullied by – and unable to function in – the adult world. Fassbender and Mulligan evoke the unspoken in a pair of measuredly passionate performances. Neither has yet been better.

Brave and refreshingly frank, this is a remarkable film. \

The ABC has been poking hard at the comedy envelope lately, if not exactly pushing it. Last year Laid edged into left-field for some appealingly black comedy (even if the premise struggled to fill its six episodes) and Twentysomething launched a truly memorable comic character (even if it forgot to include much in the way of actual jokes.) With Outland, it has hit on something even better: a comedy that is genuinely hilarious.

The premise – a secret club for gay sci-fi fans – might sound as if it’s working itself into a tiny niche, but there’s broad appeal here. Lead geek Toby Truslove (Laid) is a likeable everyman whose house just happens to be filled with plastic Daleks.

Those in the know will rejoice in background details and genre winks, but the rest of us (OK, the rest of you) can enjoy the snappy banter and comic tangles between a cast of well-crafted characters. \

BOOKS \ THE BIOGRAPHY GENRE IS NOT DEAD, SAYS CORRIE PERKIN is ridiculed by colleagues. His warnings are described as an overreaction, pro-Jewish and, as time goes on, anti-German.

Dodd’s frustration is compounded by his unsuccessful attempts to persuade Germany’s politicians to back away from their hardline policies. Some become regular embassy visitors – or, in the case of Dodd’s journalist daughter Martha, lovers.

Martha Dodd is a powerful figure in this gripping account of a society on the verge of madness. Having separated from her American husband, she joins her parents and brother on their Berlin adventure. At first Martha is intoxicated by the glamour of Berlin and the charisma of the Nazis. She has affairs with several party identities, and at one stage is discussed as a potential girlfriend for Hitler. But Martha also reaches a point where she can no longer ignore the terror, and by 1936, like the other Dodds, she can’t wait to leave Berlin.

William Dodd’s diaries and letters, Martha’s writings, State Department files and various German sources provide Larson with rich material. A former Wall Street Journal staffer, he assembles his story with a reporter’s skill. The Dodd family story is thrilling, and he has done a fine job re-creating an important time in history.

In the Garden of Beasts presents a new view of the Nazis’ rise to power. It should be mandatory reading for anyone confused as to why a seemingly civilised German society gave up its individuality and its civil rights for Hitler. \ cperkin@theweeklyreview.com.au

n the November 2011 issue of London’s Literary Review, writer Adam Sisman rejected claims that the biography is a literary genre in crisis.

“Biography seems to me to be remarkably resilient,’’ stated Sisman. “The best biographies being published now are as good as any that appeared in the past – and the worst just as bad.’’

As the reading year begins, we are happy to report that the biography is in a very healthy state. Most local bookshops report that Walter Isaacson’s bio about the late Apple boss Steve Jobs and Australian writer Peter Fitzsimons’ Mawson were among their five bestselling Christmas titles. And in the US, Publishers Weekly featured 13 biographies and memoirs on its list of the top 24 non-fiction books released in 2011.

One of last year’s late bloomers is Erik Larson’s In the Garden of Beasts. A PW best non-fiction choice for 2011, we loved it.

The focus of Larson’s study is William E. Dodd, the first US ambassador to Hitler’s Germany. The bio begins when Larson – a history professor – and his family arrive in Berlin in 1933, just weeks after President Hindenberg had appointed Hitler to the post of Chancellor. During their four-year stint, the Dodds observe a country’s optimism about the new political force transform into fear. Dodd is appalled by what he sees and diligently reports to Washington about undemocratic grabs for power, violence and thuggery, anti-Semitism, human rights abuses and a dramatic increase in German re-armament.

His letters fall on mostly deaf ears. Dodd did not come through the traditional gentlemen’s diplomat network and

ast century, Georgian was all the rage, but now French provincial is in vogue. And some of the newest and biggest French provincial houses are in Balwyn.

This one in Winmalee Road, one of the suburb’s classiest streets, was built with a specific target group in mind: one that is financially savvy, wants a big, traditional house that can accommodate members of the extended family, has several cooking areas and is in the Balwyn High school zone.

This house is vast: it is double storey and has a small back garden.

It stands tall and proud behind a cast-iron paling fence set between rendered brick pillars. The entry portico, with double front doors, is flanked by a wide garage on one side and three sets of vertical windows on the other.

On the upper level, vertical windows punctuate the façade with a central balcony trimmed with swirls in the cast-iron.

Inside, the house gleams with parquetry, marble and stone finishes. Impressive interiors include a study or fifth bedroom off the entry hall. This room has a walk-in wardrobe with a door leading to the en suite. The bathroom can also be entered from the hall, so it doubles as a powder room.

The floor plan is a familiar one. Past the powder room is the formal lounge and dining room, which has an open fireplace on one wall. Pure wool carpet is soft underfoot.

Interiors are neutral throughout, so almost any colour can be used in décor.

Opposite the formal room, a staircase with wrought-iron work curves its way to the first floor.

Continuing on down the hall, double doors lead to the informal living zone that makes up the rest of the ground floor. Here, the living area takes up a large portion of the space, with doors to connect it to the covered outdoor dining and entertainment deck.

In the kitchen, white Calacatta marble features on the island bench, a bench against the wall that houses two Miele ovens and cooktop and in the splashback.

Among the floor-to-ceiling emporite cabinets are a Miele coffee machine and microwave. Just past the kitchen, the meals area leads to the back north-facing outdoor entertainment deck This is a “show” kitchen, according to the agent. The everyday family cooking will take place in the butler’s pantry, which has a full kitchen with Miele cooktop and sink.

The timber-floored and roofed entertainment deck has its own outdoor kitchen. Stainless steel, it is huge with an eight-burner barbecue, built-in fridge, plate- and
