Funding cuts trash EPA’s efforts

BY CAMERON LUCADOU-WELLS THE state body charged with policing pollution in Melbourne’s south-east is being trashed by funding cuts, its regional manager concedes.

In a frank discussion with residents last Tuesday, the Environment Protection Authority’s acting Dandenong region manager Leigh Bryant said the 15 per cent staff cuts across the Victorian public service had left the EPA struggling to cope with demand.

Mr Bryant said managers had tried to shield field workers in the region from the cuts but told the Journal its southern metropolitan pollution control officers had been slashed from ‘‘six or seven’’ to four.

This was due to a combination of the austerity

drive and workers on maternity leave not being replaced, Mr Bryant told the residents, who included members of Residents Against Toxic Waste in the South East.

Mr Bryant said the EPA’s outsourced call-centre manning its 24/7 pollution hotline was not adequately recording complaints. Since a new data system was switched over in September, there had been problems getting a statistical breakdown of complaints.

“There’s been a number of problems — a turnover of staff in the call centre, then there’s the training of the staff to use the new system.’’

Mr Bryant said the call centre company had been given its final warning to lift its performance within eight weeks.

Dave, a Cranbourne North resident at the meet-

ing, was shocked by the revelation: ‘‘We as residents are the ones doing the monitoring for the EPA, we are the ones doing the policing for the EPA and then we find out there are glitches. All those things we’ve told the operators just fell off the system?’’

An angry resident, who did not want to be named, told Mr Bryant the EPA must close down the state’s only licensed hazardous waste dump in Taylors Road, Lyndhurst and a Hallam Road landfill in Hampton Park.

He criticised a negotiated outcome between the EPA with the tips’ operator SITA Australia over repeated breaches of odour limits, rather than taking court action.

In its latest quarterly report this month, the EPA reported a reduction in odour issues from the Hallam Road landfill.

Market traders call for rent cut DANDENONG Market traders have upped the ante in their fight with management, demanding a 50 per cent rate reduction backdated to last July.

Scott Watson has collected signatures from 85 of the market’s 110 general merchandise hall traders on a petition, each affirming their rent was too high and they had more customers before the market was renovated in 2009.

The petition states “we are in no position to continue paying rent at the rate charged currently’’.

Mr Watson, who made less than $6000 at the market last year, was recently knocked back for rent relief.

The petition will be delivered to the market’s manager Savills, owner Greater Dandenong Council and councillors.

“I want the council to know what’s going on. We feel like we’re getting nowhere at the moment,’’ Mr Watson said.

The market board is investigating how the market’s rates compare to other Melbourne markets amid traders’ claims that Dandenong’s are the most expensive.

Councillor and board member Maria Sampey was shocked by the extent of the traders’ demands.

“No one’s getting turfed out of the market for not paying their rent.’’

She said she needed to work out why traders were failing.

“I’d like to know whether some of these businesses are viable. I mean there’s only so many T-shirts that can be sold,’’ she said. ’’[Scott Watson] sells cards at $1.50 each. How much are you going to make with that? Compare that to Whynot bakery selling Lebanese foods and it’s chock-ablock, it’s always busy.’’

Cr Sampey said she, with the support of other councillors, urged the recently appointed board to work out the longrunning stand-off between Savills and traders.

of the latter move. Mr Tormey said he had ‘‘horrible’’ respiratory problems since moving in halfway between the Taylors Road and Hallam Road landfills. ‘‘I’ve nearly passed out in the car driving around here.’’

He said it would be ‘‘horrific’’ once the most hazardous-grade soil is treated at the Taylors Road tip. ’’There’ll be this tall chimney spewing up stuff .

It’ll end up wherever the wind blows.’’

The Liberal Party is not expected to field a candidate in the byelection. A spokesman for Environment Minister Ryan Smith said there were no plans to move the Lyndhurst toxic waste dump in the short term.

Greens candidate Nina Springle said she would like to see the landfill closed within five years but not necessarily moved near ‘‘someone else’s backyard’’.

Independent candidate Hung Vo also supports the tip’s closure.

THE ALP’s endorsed candidate for next month’s Lyndhurst byelection will not fight for the removal of the state’s only hazardous waste landfill.

Martin Pakula, who currently holds a Western Metropolitan upper house seat, said “the easiest thing in the world would be to make promises in a byelection campaign for the removal of the tip’’. ‘‘All political parties have to be careful not to say things that drive down property values and the security of where people live, unless they have alternatives that they can offer,’’ he said.

Opposition Leader Daniel Andrews, who launched Mr Pakula’s campaign last week, said people in the electorate were most concerned about TAFE cuts and fee rises, hospital waiting lists and their own job security.

But Ray Tormey, who lives about one kilometre from the Lyndhurst landfill, will only be satisfied with the tip’s shutdown.

He feels let down by both major parties: Labor for moving grades B and C toxic waste to Lyndhurst when in government in 2007 and the Liberals for not only retaining the site but adding grade A hazardous soils in the mix in 2011.

Re: Hazaras do the hard yards Thank you, Hamid, for explaining some of your personal story, a background to why you and your people need protection. Please send a copy to the federal leader of the opposition and to the prime minister. Maybe if they read it and think about your life they will not be so heartless in dealing with asylum seekers who come the dangerous way, by boat.

Coming by boat to claim protection from persecution is legal, and asylum seekers should not be kept in detention for more than one month. They must also be allowed to work to support themselves and their family. The asylum seekers I have known do not like to be bludgers on welfare.

CASEY councillor Rosalie Crestani has confirmed she will stand for Australia’s new ultra-right political party in the September federal election.

Danny Nalliah, head of the Rise Up Australia party, confirmed Cr Crestani would stand on the party’s Victorian Senate ticket at No. 2, behind him.

The party is standing on a platform that combines free market principles with Christianity and opposition to multiculturalism.

Mr Nalliah praised Cr Crestani’s ‘‘stern resolve and courage’’ throughout the campaign against the proposed Doveton mosque, which prompted his invitation to her last month to join the party.

The mosque is planned for a site

next to the $2 million headquarters of Mr Nalliah’s church, Catch the Fire Ministries.

Cr Crestani was the only councillor to oppose it when the application came before the planning committee on March 12.

But she has not given up the fight: at last week’s council meeting, she moved a motion for a poll of residents to see what they thought of the mosque so councillors could ‘‘represent their views properly’’.

She received little support from her fellow councillors.

Cr Wayne Smith described the motion as ‘‘mischief-making’’ that would set a ‘‘dangerous precedent’’.

Mayor Amanda Stapledon said a poll would be counter-productive and divisive. ‘‘I would like to put this to rest and hope it is the last time we hear about it.’’

Residents warned about smash scene

BY CAMERON LUCADOU-WELLS RESIDENTS say they have been pleading for speed humps on Nettle Drive, Hallam, for more than a year — the exact site of a head-on crash between a car and school bus last Wednesday.

On a chicane-like corner, a red sports car veered onto the wrong side of the road in the path of the bus about 3.50pm. Its crushed bonnet had ‘‘dipped’’ under the Emerson College school bus, Inspector Wayne Viney of Casey police said, adding that speed would be investigated as a possible factor.

An Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman said a CFA crew took an hour to cut the driver from the wreck. He had serious head and leg injuries and was flown to The Alfred hospital with lifethreatening injuries. He remained in a ‘‘critical but stable’’ condition on Thursday morning.

A front passenger, with serious abdominal injuries, was taken by ambulance to The Alfred, also in a stable condition. A rear male passenger was treated at the scene for minor injuries.

Some of the 31 children on the bus were dis-

tressed; some had ‘‘superficial injuries’’ such as blood noses and cuts but were largely unhurt, Inspector Viney said.

The bus driver and a bus passenger were treated for shock at Dandenong Hospital.

Nearby residents, who milled around the scene, say they filled in surveys for Casey Council to install speed humps on the drive more than a year ago.

They say the measures are needed to calm the constant hoon traffic speeding on Nettle Drive’s winding corners.

There are no signs warning drivers to slow around the corner, or speed humps or other measures, such as guard rails to protect homes and families.

Lux Fakiki, who lives metres from where the crash happened, said it was about the fourth accident near the crash site in the past five months.

He said speeding cars were a constant danger, especially to the many children living nearby.

Casey Council’s transport manager Paul Hamilton said a local traffic management scheme for Nettle Drive was endorsed at a council meeting in January. The $100,000 project for five

‘speed cushions’ in Fitzgerald Road and Nettle Drive would be referred to the council’s future capital works program and subject to funding availability. ‘‘There is a high demand for traffic management devices across the municipality and there are significant costs associated with their implementation.’’

FOR more years than I can remember — dating back to the happy days when The Journal occupied premises at Scott Street — I was privileged to report on the Dandenong Agricultural and Pastoral Society’s annual show.

I made many lasting friendships among the exhibitors and greatly admired their talents.

Looking through my files, I’ve unearthed a Dandenong Grand National Centenary issue of The Journal dated November 11, 1971, when Alfred John Follett was the society’s president. His parents Walter and Emma Follett (nee Marriott) were the children of early settlers.

Back then, market gardens flourished and our produce was carted to the Victoria Market in Melbourne in horsedrawn wagons.

The centenary show judges travelled in from afar — some from around Victoria, interstate and even from New Zealand.

Highland dancers twirled to the skirl of the pipes, the lasses lined up for a showgirl sash and Dandenong’s A grade brass band blasted out catchy tunes during the Saturday program.

And of course, there was the main attraction, straight out of Old McDonald’s Farm. Horses, dairy cattle, beef cattle, sheep, goats, cavies

(guinea pigs), dogs and cats were, and always have been, the stars of the show.

Although I lived on a farm at Lyndhurst until my father’s death when I was 17 and helped milk dairy cows on the property, many of the cattle breeds listed in The Journal report still elude me. I’m still fairly uninformed about Branguses, Anguses and Brahman cattle breeds!

Footnote: I do also recall how, working at The Journal during this era, every Wednesday there was a queue of people outside our office, stretching from Dickson Lane around the corner in Thomas Street, to Bill the Butcher’s.

They waited to spend their five cents for 72 pages of news ‘hot off the press’.

At the book nook For 15 years a small, cosy group of women from

Springvale, Clayton and Dandenong has met at each another’s home for a lively discussion on books by women authors. And there’s more room for other bookworms.

The women’s ages range from their 40s to 70s, and the group, the Springvale Book Club, is co-ordinated through the Council of Adult Education.

The members bring their personal experiences to the fore, connecting their stories to the books’ themes.

It’s not just food for thought. Once a year a club member takes a turn at hosting the readers with homemade cakes and other goodies for supper.

The club has a core membership of six, some of whom have a lifelong link with Springvale.

And all have varied tastes in books: “I love detective books,’’ says one of the ladies. ‘‘Others enjoy books on history, love stories — all incorporate a learning experience.’’

Mourners’ pink tribute for teen

Leaders named as citizen consultants

THREE Greater Dandenong community leaders have been appointed ‘grassroots’ consultants to the federal government and Australian Multicultural Council.

Councillor and former mayor Jim Memeti, Young Victorian of the Year Victor Victor and Afghani-Australian lifesaver Imtiyaz Saberi were inducted as People of Australia Ambassadors in Canberra on Harmony Day last Thursday.

They join 50 other national ambassadors, appointed for a year for helping promote inclusion in their communities.

Cr Memeti, of Dandenong South, has been an active Albanian community leader who, as a councillor, has supported infrastructure projects to ‘‘strengthen the social fabric of the city’’.

Mr Victor, of Noble Park, mentors youth, has been in the Multi-Faith Multicultural Youth Network, a volunteer tutor with African group SAIL, music event MC and won Greater Dandenong’s young citizen award in 2011.

Mr Saberi, of Dandenong, is the country’s first Afghani-Australian lifesaver and promotes safeswimming among young people and new arrivals.

Isaacs MP Mark Dreyfus said the ambassadors had a ‘‘vital role’’ informing the government about life in multicultural Australia.

THE words on the tribute screen said it all: ‘‘One day can change everything.’’

It was an understated reminder of 13-year-old Shaye Kosky’s death to the 500-plus family, friends, students and teachers at her Bunurong Memorial Park funeral last Monday.

The Dandenong High School student was struck by a car outside the school on March 6.

Many mourners wore pink — Shaye’s favourite colour — the colour of her coffin and the 13 balloons released, marking each of her tender years. Balloons drifted high and out of sight, towards Shaye’s Dandenong North home.

Then butterflies — which Shaye loved to chase as a younger girl — were let go among mourners.

In a sublime moment, one nestled on the sleeve of Shaye’s father Tony.

He, Shaye’s mother Stacey Brown and older sister Jacinta shared heartbreaking eulogies to their ‘‘princess’’ and ‘‘angel’’ — remembered as a caring, popular animal lover, a little mischievous and a bit of a klutz. Ms Brown spoke of the things she’d miss: Shaye’s ‘‘magic smile’’ and ‘‘the silly little things you used to say’’.

Jacinta, 16, described her many memories of her ‘‘other half’’, each starting with a smile. She

Mr Kosky said Shaye was the most beautiful baby — blonde hair, blue eyes — who became everyone’s best friend. ‘‘Shaye, fly away,’’ he said. ‘‘Be our angel above.’’

INBRIEF Drug trafficking charges A man has been charged with trafficking about $40,000 worth of methamphetamines after police raided two neighbouring units in Springvale.

Greater Dandenong tasking unit members seized 26 grams of methamphetamines as well as four ecstasy pills and $300 worth of cannabis from the Erica Street units on March 14. Another 35 grams of methamphetamines was found in a vehicle at the units. Police also discovered $27,400 cash, as well as laptops, jewellery and cameras. Dien Cong Nguyen, 43, of Erica Street, Springvale, appeared in Dandenong Magistrates Court charged with trafficking methamphetamines and possession of ecstasy, cannabis and the proceeds of crime.

Helping business have a say Dandenong Retail Traders Association chairwoman Glenys Cooper has backed a state MP’s idea for business people being given the vote in council elections. Ms Cooper said it was right for them to have a say since they also paid council rates. South-eastern metropolitan Liberal MP Inga Peulich has asked Local Government Minister Jeanette Powell to investigate the idea. “I think it is a very serious and very visionary proposal, which I would like the minister to consider, along with any other means by which the voice of business owners could be heard at the local municipal level,” Ms Peulich said.

A JOYRIDE in a Lamborghini could make some lucky passenger’s Good Friday especially good.

Joanne Pollina is offering to drive someone in her flashy yellow 2007 Gallardo Spyder convertible on EastLink as one prize in a 30-lot fundraising auction and family fun day in Dandenong this Friday.

She’s only had the $270,000 Spyder, formerly owned by poker world champion Joe Hachem, for four weeks.

Already it has had an expensive date with the panel beaters after a dumper bin rolled into the car’s side.

It’s a smooth dream to drive, if a bit embarrassing, Ms Pollina said. ‘‘People stare at you when you pull up in Dandenong or into Parkmore shopping centre.

People take photos of the car. ‘‘My husband [Mimmo] tells me to leave the car in the garage but what’s the use of that — it’s a joy to drive.’’

Other auction prizes include a ride in an Aston Martin, beauty packs and sports memorabilia.

Mr Cameron is known as the ‘‘triple-0 man’’ — the one people ring when they’re in the hospital or police cells. Often he dips into his pocket to help someone out with $2 or $5, chef Gloria Anderson said. ‘‘He does a lot of late nights. He’s always on the go and he’ll never talk about himself.’’

Central beat the much-improved Yarra Valley Grammar Ariels 58-46 at the State Netball and Hockey Centre and in the process took its winloss record into positive territory with its second win in three matches.

Central coach Leesa Maxfield said her side was beginning to come together. ‘‘Our defensive pressure was again very good and our attack really stepped up,’’ Maxfield said. ‘‘Overall we are just starting to jell as a team and be disciplined in what we do. ‘‘We’ve cut out our errors and didn’t have the drop in concentration that we had in earlier games. ‘‘That made a big difference.’’

of a form reversal. ‘‘You can’t discount them,’’ Maxfield said. ‘‘We just have to concentrate on what we can do, keep up our pressure and keep our error rate low. ‘‘If we do that and execute the game plan, the result will take care of itself.’’

In division 1 Central and Ariels drew 38-38 while in under-19s the Ariels had a 47-31 win over Central.

he had signed up to work in a brothel. But when Jessica arrived in Australia from south-east Asia, the young mother didn’t expect that her passport would be confiscated or that she would have to work off a debt to her traffickers. She didn’t know that she would have to live inside the brothel, on-call 24-hours a day, forced to have unprotected sex with countless men.

If she had, she says, she would have continued working at the brothel in her home country, where she was barely earning enough to pay off rising medical bills.

“They said it would be the same as in my country,” Jessica recalls.

“They said it was safe. But I had to do everything. All of this with no condoms.”

Jessica had a valid student visa when she arrived. It had been arranged by the traffickers who were well aware of Australian laws that allow international students to earn a living as sex workers.

After receiving directions via a payphone at the airport and parting ways with the young women she travelled with, Jessica made her way to a legal innercity brothel. When she arrived she gave $1000 the trafficker had given her to the brothel owner; a transaction she now believes was a finder’s fee payment. She was then forced to sign a contract that would effectively have her working as a sex slave for the next three months.

Jessica is now safe, but her story is not uncommon. The federal government’s Support For Trafficked People program has assisted 191 people since 2004, the majority of whom were forced into the sex industry.

But due to the nature of sex slavery, the number of women trafficked to Melbourne and Sydney’s inner-city and suburban brothels is likely to be much higher. Melbourne support group for women in the sex industry, Project Respect, has supported 20 trafficked women in the past 12 months.

Two weeks ago, officers from Victoria Police’s newly-formed Sex Industry Co-ordination Unit (SICU) swooped on a business in Melbourne’s south-east.The taskforce was established on February 29 to coincide with legislative changes that made police the lead agency for investigations into the multi-million dollar illegal prostitution industry.

They charged a 66-year-old Bentleigh woman and a 64-year-old Ormond woman with forcing a child to have sex for money. The business was one of about 100 licensed brothels in the state. The legal sex industry estimates there are 300-400 unlicensed brothels across Victoria with links to human trafficking, tax evasion and organised crime.

Government corruption has also been a problem. City of Yarra planning enforcement co-ordinator

Ken Wolfe last year pleaded guilty to taking more than $130,000 in bribes from illegal brothel operators. It was Wolfe’s job to enforce sex laws and shut down illegal brothels from Fitzroy to Richmond. An enforcement officer from Darebin council was also stood down in 2011 after it was revealed that he was involved in the illegal sex trade.

According to a Productivity Commission report released last month, local councils responsible for brothel planning, zoning and workplace health and safety, continue to identify illegal brothels and co-ordinate further enforcement with state and federal government agencies.The job of investigating illegal brothels has traditionally been split between councils, local and federal police, consumer affairs and the tax and immigration departments.

Port Phillip council conducted eight investigations into illegal and legal brothels in the 2011-12 financial year.Three legal brothels were found to be breaching their permits and the council pursued two cases at the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal. Echoing the findings in the report, Port Phillip council and the Australian Adult Entertainment Industry, the body that represents Victoria’s legal brothels, want police to take a more active role in the crackdown against illegal brothels.

Port Phillip mayor Rachel Powning said council officers continued to investigate illegal brothels before referring them to the police.“Police are better

positioned to investigate and pursue allegations around illegal brothels due to the broader issues such as criminal activity and other related offences,” Cr Powning said.

“Any action taken under planning legislation for illegal land use generally results in an operator moving to another premise.”

Under local laws, councils have the power to prohibit the use of a premises where an illegal brothel is run for up to three months. But the legal sex industry claims this does nothing to deter illegal brothel operators who easily set up shop somewhere else.

AAEI spokesman William Albon commended Port Phillip council on its work against illegal brothels but conceded local laws were too restrictive.“Regrettably, the council can only use planning law and go after the owners of the land where the illegal brothel is sited,” he said.

“Rarely is the owner of the land the illegal brothel operator.”

Since it was set up, SICU has investigated three illegal brothels.

One of them is located in the City of Port Phillip, where South Melbourne has 10 per cent of Victoria’s licensed brothels.

However, the taskforce has failed to identify a new breed of brothel, which began promoting its prostitution racket through website Sweetybabe.net.

Sweetybabe clients access photo galleries and descriptions of sex workers “available today”, who are promoted as a mix of students, office ladies and clubbing girls in their late teens and early 20s.The

website details the sex services provided and costs, starting at $350 an hour. Contact with the brothel operator is made via a 24-hour customer service hotline or Chinese social networking website QQ. The illegal brothel employs at least 19 sex workers and was set up the day before SICU launched.

Six new sex workers have been promoted online in the past week.

The racket, allegedly run by a Chinese syndicate that has spread from the suburbs to inner-city hotels, has recently made inroads across state borders to Sydney, Adelaide and Perth. A mobile phone app to complement the website is under construction.

Victoria Police Inspector Trevor Cornwill, who lead SICU until last week, said the taskforce was not investigating any brothels operating out of Melbourne hotels or Sweetybabe.net. “We are investigating one illegal brothel in Melbourne CBD based at a fixed address,” he said.“We haven’t looked at any hotels.”

Asked whether he suspected an illegal brothel was running out of Melbourne hotels, Inspector Cornwill said he wouldn’t be surprised.“Yes, it’s possible because these illegal brothels are quite fluid in that they’ll set up in one place and then move to another place. It wouldn’t surprise me at all.”

Sweetybabe clients are not told which hotel will be used until the day of the rendezvous; they are typically met by staff in the hotel lobby and given a key pass to access the elevators and hotel room. In some cases the illegal brothel operator uses one hotel room as a reception area, showing clients a line-up of sex workers and providing pre-booked rooms.

A customer who attended the mobile brothel operating out of rooms at Crown Towers on four occasions since March said he was offered sex each time and told he could request different women. He was asked to pay $350 an hour or $550 for two hours in return for sexual services.

The customer attended West Melbourne’s Flagstaff City hotel last month, where he was introduced to five women who were providing sex services out of two rooms. He was also offered sex at the Grand Chancellor in June.

In a members-only forum on Chinese dating website CatchGod, another client of the mobile brothel described his encounter

with a Sweetybabe sex worker at Crown. He wrote that the sex worker charged $350 an hour for sexual services without a condom.

“It’s worth the money,” he wrote.

“This weekend I’m very satisfied.

Thanks to the Sweety girls for providing a high-quality girl.”

The hotels have denied any knowledge of brothel activity.

Sex industry sources say they are concerned that the new police taskforce is too focused on illegal brothels operating in the suburbs to shut down the mobile brothel operating in the city.The owner of one of Port Phillip’s 12 legal brothels, who asked not to be named, was doubtful a small team of police officers could effectively crack down on operators.“I’ve heard about the new team, but there are not enough of them,” the owner said.“The problem is so big – illegal brothels are booming.”

One former brothel manager said he knew many Chinese sex workers who quit their jobs in legal brothels to work for the mobile syndicate.

He said the women earned more money working for the mobile brothel because the customers, mostly young Chinese students, were prepared to pay more to avoid going to street-front brothels.

Since 2009 there has been a push to introduce signs in the reception area and all rooms of legal brothels that describe what sex slavery is and provide the phone numbers of local and federal police. However, unless the signs are displayed in languages other than English and unless the state government is on board, critics argue they will be useless.

Through an interpreter, Jessica said she was forced to sign a contract when she arrived in Australia. She believed she was not allowed to leave the brothel and with no understanding of local laws, she went to work.

“When a customer came in we all came out from the room and line up.” Jessica said she paid a cut of her wage to the brothel owner, the trafficker and the Malaysian agent who recruited her. Along with the Malaysian, Chinese and Korean women she lived with, some who were also trafficked, Jessica was available for sex 24-hours a day, seven days a week before she finally escaped.

The entry-level Cruze CD has been cut out of the range, being replaced by the Equipe.

Starting at $19,490, which is $2000 less than the model it replaces Added features include foglamps, sports grille, 17-inch alloy wheels and rear park assist as standard.

Cruze CDX (starting from $24,190) gains premium features including keyless entry with push button start and a reversing camera. The last is also added to the range-topping SRi-V (from $26,490), while the SRi sport model (from $22,490) gets rear park assist as standard.

Those familiar with the Aussie made Holden Cruzes will recognise three engines from the Series II range – the 1.4-litre iTi and 1.8-litre petrol engines, and 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel.

Over the next 24 hours or so and more than 500 kilometres the motoring media were introduced to a range of MY14 models on some of the best and most testing roads in the country.

While the 1.4, 1.8 petrol and 2.0-litre diesel engines hooked up to a mix of manual or automatic transmissions had the Cruze skipping along the narrow twisty roads at full tilt, it was the sporty 1.6 petrol turbo six-speed manual that offered the most driving satisfaction.

All the 230 Nm of torque was put to good use running down slower traffic.

With 31 models selling for less than $30,000, the Cruze MY14, which goes on sale in April, faces a congested small-car market where competition is red hot.

BY ROY WARD DANDENONG Lions won their first Agnes McDonnell Trophy since 2007 with a stirring win in the Victorian Women’s Cricket Association Essteele Premier Firsts grand final on Saturday.

Playing at the AH Butler Oval in Frankston, the Lions lost the toss and were put into the field

by Box Hill. The Mustangs posted 8-191 in their 50 overs, leaving the Lions plenty to do with the bat.

Kate Dempsey made 73 for the Mustangs. Julie Hunter took 4-48 and Emma Gallagher 3-30 for the Lions.

Gallagher took the vital wicket of Mustangs captain and Australian star Meg Lanning for just six runs.

But veteran batsman Sarah Elliott became the

anchor of the Lions’ chase, compiling 73 not out from 90 balls as the Lions chased down the total 5-192 with 46.5 overs.

Australian star Julie Hunter made 48 off 73 balls and Belinda de Feyter was 25 not out off 30 balls at the end.

Penelope Cleghorn took 2-15 for the Mustangs to be their best bowler.

Elliott, whose husband minded her fivemonth-old son Samuel during the innings, said the Lions’ win was a fantastic team effort. ‘‘The fielding effort was great on a very good batting deck,’’ she said. ‘‘We shared the wicket around and took some fantastic catches. Then in our innings we had batting partnerships all the way through. ‘‘Having runs on the board can be very helpful in a grand final but we knew if one of the top order stayed in then we would be OK.’’

Elliott praised Lions playing coach Kelly Applebee and the club’s committee for their work in developing and recruiting young players in the past few years. ‘‘It was such a special win for the club,’’ Elliott said. ‘‘We haven’t been in finals for about five years and we finished fourth this year and only got our best team together during the finals. ‘‘There was a lot of past players at the game on Saturday. These few years have been a rebuilding period for us. ‘‘It’s been a tough year for us, numbers-wise, and we actually played short in a few games but got our best team in the park during the finals.’’

Mazenod chuffed with surprise signing MAZENOD Soccer Club senior coach Nick D’Angelo admits he never expected to coach anyone trained by legendary Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

But that all changed when Mazenod signed former Red Devils and Melbourne Victory midfielder Grant Brebner earlier this month.

The 35-year-old star will play and coach juniors at Mazenod College this year along with a possible other marquee signing, leaving the club well placed to contend for the title in the FFV State League 5 competition after the club won the now-defunct metro league competition last season.

of the two-time A League champion. ‘‘When you take on these jobs, especially in state league 5, you are sort of lucky if someone in the side has played three divisions higher,’’ he said. ‘‘Players with that sort of experience are like a [Alessandro] Del Piero in your team, so to have a bloke like Grant who is highly decorated and has such an impressive CV — I didn’t expect to be coaching someone coached by Sir Alex.’’

Brebner came to the club as he was friends with some of the Mazenod board members and he has quickly forced up the standard of his teammates along with players in the club’s fledgling junior program, which in his first season has recruited more than 100 players. ‘‘Brebs has been fantastic,’’ D’Angelo said. ‘‘All he wants to do is put something back into

grassroots football. He has played at the highest levels and he is only 35, so could be playing at a higher level but decided to help us out. ‘‘We have some good 17, 18 and 19-year-old kids and they come from good footballing backgrounds and he is like a mentor for them. ‘‘Everyone lifts at training when he is around.

It’s like the boys want to impress him, so it’s been all positive.’’

D’Angelo expects Brebner to fall into his usual defensive midfielder role.

D’Angelo encouraged football fans to come and watch his team during the coming FFV season.

DANDENONG Panthers were on the verge of dropping out of the Premier Cricket finals in their semi-final against Melbourne at the Albert Ground yesterday.

Batting first, the Panthers were bowled out for 191 on Saturday with all-rounder James Nanopoulos (45), captain Darren Pattinson (41) and Tom Donnell (36) the leading lights. Demons allrounder Alex Keath (4-41) and Brenton McDonald (3-61) did the damage.

With overs left in the first day’s play, the Demons took a big chunk out of the Panthers’ modest total, finishing on 2-74 with Victorian duo Michael Hill (26 not out) and Andrew McDonald (22 not out) well placed to take their side to the further 118 runs needed for victory.

In the other semi-final, Ringwood had all but sealed its place in the grand final after routing Prahran at Toorak Park.

The Rams bowled out the True Blues for 184 with Blair Allan (3-37) and Michael Topp (2-52) taking early wickets to make sure the home side’s innings never got off the ground.

In response Rams stars David King (95 not out) and Tom Stray (61 not out) had the visitors on 1-172, needing just 13 runs for victory.

The Premier Cricket grand final will be played over the Saturday, Sunday and Monday of the Easter long weekend.

Rangers win again DANDENONG Rangers men kept their undefeated start to the South East Australian Basketball League season going with an 85-81 win over Mt Gambier at Dandenong Stadium on Saturday night.

The Rangers held the advantage throughout the match and made sure the Pioneers wouldn’t storm past them at the end with a solid last quarter.

The Rangers made the most of their opportunities as the Pioneers got 10 more free throw attempts but shot just 13 of 25 compared to the Rangers shooting 14 of 15.

Dandenong also dominated the rebound count 44-32.

Rangers import forward Daequon Montreal was again in top form shooting a game-high 28 points and grabbing nine rebounds while fellow import Tony Lewis added 15 points and six rebounds.

Rangers point guard Andrew Harms added 13 points, five rebounds and nine assists to show he is in good touch.

Matt Sutton had 20 points for the Pioneers while Titus Robinson added 19 points and 11 rebounds.

The Rangers women had a bye this round and all of SEABL takes a break over the Easter long weekend with matches resuming the following weekend. Both Rangers teams host Geelong at Dandenong Stadium on April 6 with the women’s game starting at 5.30pm.

Ridges has a blast in grand final BUCKLEY Ridges claimed its second DDCA turf 1 premiership in four years with a resounding win over Mordialloc at Keysborough Reserve on Saturday.

After rain reduced play on the first weekend, the Ridges resumed on 3-162 and stormed to an unbeatable position, smashing 180 runs in a furious 20-over session to start the day.

DJ Watson made 188 not out and Greg Todd made 54 and captain-coach Marc Calkin 43 as they posted 5-342.

The Bloods lost an early wicket and were never really in the run chase as experienced spinner Wes Nicholas snared 6-41 from 15.2 overs and Todd added 2-24 as the Bloods were bowled out for 107 in 47 overs.

Calkin, who won’t return to the club next season, praised his players for their performances throughout the season.

“We just kept pushing through. We got a little bit of luck but everything we did came off and when you can score 180 runs in 20 overs, it’s fantastic,” he said.

“I’ve been happy here as you know and I’m really happy I decided to come to this club and wish them well for the future. But I will need to stay in Darwin next season.”

A smashing birthday party

BY ROY WARD BUCKLEY Ridges batsman DJ Watson spent all week stressing about batting in the DDCA turf 1 grand final but he only needed 20 overs to take his side to a memorable premiership.

Watson resumed on 87 not out with the Ridges on 3-162 and led the charge in the first 20 overs of the day, making 188 not out with 17 fours and two sixes.

The Ridges smashed 180 runs in those 20 overs to take their total to 5-342 declared with Ben Watson four not out.

DJ Watson, whose innings will be long remembered, was honoured with the Damien Fleming medal as best player in the turf 1

grand final. The premiership was his second at the club following its 2009-2010 premiership and it came on his 25th birthday.

“It’s just good to get over the line again.

This time I feel like I can absorb it more, really suck up the experience of winning the flag.”

Watson said he had spent much of the week thinking about his innings, which left him nervous.

“I just got out there today and felt good. I don’t know what got into me. I’ve been nervous all week, to be honest, but once I was out there I felt good and managed to get away and make a few runs.”

Watson had started a new job during the week and that, along with the anticipation of

resuming at the crease, made for a difficult time.

“I started a new job and had a bit of time to myself so I was thinking about it way too much and got myself too worked up. ‘‘I honestly don’t know how I got over it. I suppose I just counted down the days until the game.

“It’s definitely the best I’ve ever batted.”

Ridges captain-coach Marc Calkin praised Watson for his innings.

“Scoring 188 in a final is unbelievable,” Calkin said.

“You couldn’t script it better. ‘‘Everything he has done this year, all the work he has put in really came off for him today.”

For club’s president, a point of pride BUCKLEY Ridges president Kieran Watson had arguably his best day in cricket on Saturday as his club won its second DDCA turf 1 premiership in five seasons.

As head of the club, the premiership was a rich reward for years of hard work. But as a father, watching sons DJ and Ben play in the premiership made for an unforgettable day.

DJ made 188 not out and Ben was not out with him when the Ridges innings ended.

Watson said the premiership was a special one for his club. ‘‘As club president I’m so

happy to see us get another flag after all the work that went into it. As a father, to see my two sons play in this premiership made it all the more special.’’

After coaching seven of the 11 premiership players at junior level, Watson had more reasons to enjoy the occasion. ‘‘We had seven players who came through our junior sides right up to turf 1.’’

Watson said the premiership was the perfect way to end his presidency, which he will step away from to have a rest. ‘‘It’s the

perfect way to finish up. I’ve been president for five years, I coached juniors for a lot of seven or so years and played for a lot of years, so to see the boys win today leaves me over the moon.’’

While Watson received a premiership medal as president, he quickly took it off and asked captain-coach Marc Culkin to give it to injured bowler Jeremy Kuru, who was one of the stars of the season for the Ridges but injured himself in the semi-finals.

Saints go marching in ST MARY’S wasn’t meant to make the DDCA one-day finals, in fact the Saints as a club hadn’t won a senior premiership in a decade heading into this season.

But the Saints earned a chance to play in the postseason and made the most of it, winning through the semi-finals in the final round and then coming from the back of the field to make the grand final against favourites Silverton.

The Saints, led by first-year captain Ben Graham, went on to beat Silverton in a rain-interrupted match last Sunday week to claim the club’s first senior premiership in 10 years, making 8-161 to Silverton’s 156 all out.

Rain interrupted the match on the Saturday so it had to be completed on Sunday, which added a little pressure to the Saints’ run chase.

In typical one-day league fashion, there was some uncertainty about whether the Saints had passed the winning total or not so they actually had two chances to run out on the ground and celebrate the premiership.

“It came down to the end and we had plenty of wickets in hand but were running out of time so we had to swing and run,” Graham said.

“We got two boundaries at the end and the boys ran out celebrating because we thought we had won.

“But we were told we should play another ball which was hit for four to third man which gave us a five-run win.

“So we started celebrating and ran out there again.”

The win was especially important to Graham, who took on the captaincy from his stepdad John Guterman at the start of the season.

Guterman plays alongside both his stepsons with younger brother Josh Graham also in the side.

“He said the captaincy was doing his head in so he passed it on to me,” Ben Graham said.

“The best thing about the whole day that was mum and my sister were on sidelines for the whole game and also when we were celebrating I turned around and get a big hug from my stepdad.’’
