School zone plea for highway

BY CAMERON LUCADOU-WELLS A GREATER Dandenong councillor wants lower speed limits on a high-casualty stretch of the Princes Highway where a student was fatally struck by a car outside Dandenong High School last month.

At a council meeting last Monday, Cr Jim Memeti asked for talks with VicRoads on how to make safer the highway section between Jones Road and Clow Street.

On March 6, 13-year-old Shaye Kosky was fatally injured when struck by a car in an 80km/h zone at the James Street intersection. About 100 metres further east, the highway’s speed limit drops to 60km/h.

There is no ‘school zone’ signage requiring motorists to slow down during school drop-off and pick-up times, although there is a 40km/h

service lane between the highway and the school.

VicRoads statistics show there have been 20 ‘casualty accidents’ near the intersection in the five years up to June 30 last year. Eight of those incidents were ‘high-severity’ but no fatalities.

A few hundred metres away, a 30-year-old father, Hamedjan Hussaini, was killed when his car was struck by an allegedly drag-racing car in 2011. Mr Hussaini was pulling out from Henty Street onto the highway.

Last year, Shyam Jayasinghe, 28, was jailed for three years, with a non-parole period of 18 months, for dangerous driving causing death over the incident. He had allegedly sped up to 110km/h in a 60 zone.

Cr Memeti said he had feedback on a number of serious crashes — some unreported to police — on the highway section, which includes a skate park, playground and high school.

‘‘It’s a dangerous intersection at Dandenong High School. It should be set as a school zone,’’ Cr Memeti said. ‘‘I’d like to see a speed limit of 40 during 8-9am and 3-4pm, flashing lights to tell drivers to slow down and the pedestrian crossing more visible for cars.’’

VicRoads metro south-east regional director Peter Todd said the request would be reviewed once it had completed a ‘‘significant update’’ to its speed zoning guidelines.

The guidelines were expected to be completed

by June 30. ‘‘VicRoads will be reassessing and consolidating the guidelines regarding speed zones where there are high numbers of pedestrians,’’ Mr Todd said. ‘‘This will provide a clear and consistent approach across metropolitan and rural Victoria for speed zones and reduce the risk of pedestrian crashes.’’

Timely warning Fire crews,including Noble Park CFA’s Ian Grace, Aaron Yates and Andrew South, are urging households to change their smoke alarm batteries this Sunday, coinciding with the end of daylight saving. First lieutenant Michael Selemba said most fatal house fires occurred in winter and a working smoke alarm gave early warning to evacuate.Volunteer firefighters are needed at Noble Park CFA. EPA denies cuts affect its policing ENVIRONMENT Protection Authority Victoria’s chief executive has denied staff cuts are ‘‘compromising’’ its work in policing pollution in Melbourne’s south-east.

In a letter to the Journal, John Merritt said the EPA was ‘‘more actively involved than ever before’’ in solving issues at landfills in ClaytonDingley and Hampton Park.

Mr Merritt said the EPA was targeting issues that presented the highest risk to the community and the environment.

Last week, the Journal reported that EPA’s acting Dandenong region manager Leigh Bryant told residents that 15 per cent in staff cuts across the state public service had left the authority struggling to cope with demand. ‘‘Our process can be slow but that relates to the resourcing issues,’’ Mr Bryant told residents, which included members of Residents Against Toxic Waste in the South East. ‘‘We have limited numbers and it affects the time we can respond.’’

He said the call-centre company manning the EPA’s 24/7 pollution hotline was on a final performance warning for inadequately recording complaints.

Jim Houlahan, a resident at the meeting who asked about the impact of staff cuts, said it was ‘‘extremely refreshing’’ to be part of a meeting ‘‘without any spin’’. ‘‘I hope there aren’t any consequences for [Mr Bryant],’’ he said. ‘‘If the cuts don’t impact on the performance, you have to think they have been over-resourced or there have been inefficiencies.’’

Mr Merritt said last year’s negotiated outcome with Hallam Road landfill operator SITA Australia over repeated breaches of odour limits resulted in $800,000 worth of work to fix the issue and was ‘‘agreeable’’ to nearby residents.

Under the undertaking, SITA was required to give $100,000 towards a community environment project.

Mr Houlahan said the outcome was greeted with suspicion. ‘‘People don’t want a set of swings or slides. They want the problem solved.’’

Re: Dandenong market traders The new design of the Dandenong Market leaves a lot to be desired. The market has a long history so its place in Dandenong needs to be protected.

The variety of stallholders need to offer produce and goods that shoppers want to buy at a fair and reasonable price, but the stallholders’ rents need to reflect that. The market has lost is appeal as it is becoming too commercial and the goods offered are all the same. Action needs to be taken now otherwise the market will become another lemon in our landscape.

Re: Crestani to contest Senate The issue for any council is to cater for all minority groups that go to make up a community. I personally dislike Pentecostal Christians and golfers but accept they have a right to practise their pastime.

The issue with Danny Nalliah is he cannot stand the thought that people disagree with his prejudices towards Muslims so he attempted to sway the council on emotive grounds to reject an application for a mosque.

Casey Council has done the right thing by deciding the Doveton mosque application purely on planning issues and not the hysterical prejudices of a small Christian sect.

We need to remember that, despite a traditional identity of Christianity for a majority of Australians, only about 5 per cent attend church regularly.

Danny’s style of Christianity is a strange subset of this 5 per cent and we must not allow their hyster-

ical ideas about theology to dominate how a community is to be constructed.

I can’t believe Casey Council doesn’t care what residents want or whether they are forced to sell their houses because they do not want to live next to a mosque. It’s obvious through this incident that councils have too much power, that they can simply override the 2000-plus names on petitions against the building of the mosque in favour of the town planners’ recommendation. Cr Wayne Smith’s statement — that Cr Crestani’s motion is mischief making that would set a dangerous precedent — is undemocratic. What happened to the rights of the residents?

Re: Positive sign at Noble Park The civic area is a wonderful space, yet a few metres down the road is the Noble Park train station where the landscaping is more like a moonscape. The appearance of the station is an eyesore on the whole Noble Park shopping district. It’s time for something to be done to get an integrated approach to the whole area.

Market trade ‘being hit by grey ghosts’

BY CAMERON LUCADOU-WELLS FRUIT and vegetable traders say parking issues and a lack of advertising are killing their trade at the renovated Dandenong Market.

Their woes coincide with the market’s general merchandise traders, who have threatened strike action against soaring rents despite depressed trade.

As reported in the Journal last week, 85 of 110 general merchandise traders have petitioned for a 50 per cent rent reduction, backdated to last July.

Alex Alexopoulos, who runs Alexander Produce, said the market had ‘‘the cheapest meat, fish and deli section in Melbourne, but nobody knows about it’’. ‘‘If the market advertised the prices, people would come flocking back.’’

Mr Alexopoulos, who has been at the market for 20 years, said the band of ‘grey ghosts’ issuing tickets was a customer deterrent. ‘‘The parking officers are writing a lot of tickets. You see tickets on a row of 10 cars. They’re customers who don’t come back.’’

Mr Alexopoulos said rents were at the right level if ‘‘the market was busy’’. He named a longtime seller who recently left the market because he was making a loss.

Dingley-based grower and seller Raif Memedouski, who has run the 100-square-metre Kiko’s produce stalls for 15 years, said he was up to three months in rent arrears — which equates to up to $48,000.

He said his sales had dropped 30 per cent since the market was renovated in 2011.

He also blamed the parking system, set at 40 cents an hour. ‘‘For the sake of 20 cents, customers are getting $100 fines. While over at the plaza, there’s free parking?’’

DELICATE, haunting, beautiful: these are just some of the words that spring to mind when thinking of porcelain dolls — and the craft is still alive and well across Greater Dandenong.

The doll students’ ‘matriarch’ is Leny Mauriks who, alongside her husband Frank, teaches others the painstaking work that goes into decorating each figure with regular classes at their Dandenong North studio, opened in 1988.

As well as making the dolls, the couple also restore them — the dolls are often regarded as family heirlooms and have been handed down in families for generations.

Mrs Maurik said once the dolls were made, there were intricate and delicate features to be added, making each one completely individual.

They ranged from baby dolls to elderly grandparents, and many skin tones had to be mastered, as well as making the dolls’ hands, arms, legs, feet and eyes.

Among the skills needed to dress the dolls are sewing, embroidery, knitting, crochet work, beading and shoe making. But perhaps the most painstaking task is making the wigs.

When some of her students entered a series of competitions against work on show from

Closed gym puts clubs on sidelines

BY CAMERON LUCADOU-WELLS SPORTS clubs have been forced to find new homes after being bounced out of the former Endeavour Hills Secondary College gymnasium.

The Flames Futsal competition, one of several sports competitions that used the gym, has been defunct since moving out last December when the school closed.

Former organiser John Myska said he could not find an alternative venue nearby, so some of its players — as well as its goals, cones and bibs — have defected to the closest competition, Bayside Pirates in Cheltenham. ‘‘There’s a shortage of courts in the area. It seems most of them get monopolised by basketball,’’ Mr Myska said.

An Afghan volleyball group, karate and basketball groups also used the gym. ‘‘It was a crying shame to lose it. It was pretty much used every night of the week except Saturdays,’’ Mr Myska said.

Last year, departing Endeavour Hills Sec-

ondary College principal Barbara Motherside spoke out on the loss of the gym, also used by nearby James Cook Primary School.

She said Casey Council should buy it to preserve the ‘‘community facility’’.

Casey chief executive Mike Tyler told the Journal last year the stadium was owned by the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development and had been open to the community in a ‘‘joint use agreement’’. ‘‘Inquiries about the building should be referred to DEECD,’’ Mr Tyler said.

A department spokesman said the gymnasium would remain closed because of ‘‘extensive issues relating to security, safety, public liability and maintenance’’.

He said a gymnasium at Doveton College would be available for sports groups to hire later this year. The department is assessing possible uses for the school site.

Last month, a spokesman said the department was selling off 35 school sites in Victoria’s south-east — part of a 192-school statewide sale.

DANDENONG Thunder officials were last week weighing up a Supreme Court challenge against a five home-game spectator ban imposed by a Football Federation Australia appeals committee.

The club had hoped the ban would include away fixtures but a clarification by the appeals committee last week thwarted that hope.

Thunder spokesman Sezar Jacupi said the club was ‘‘reviewing’’ the decision ‘‘which brought into question the survival of the club’’.

It has sought an extension to pay a $40,000 fine from the FFA, due this week.

The hefty penalty came after rocket flares were fired from among Thunder supporters at last year’s Victorian Premier League grand final. One of the flares injured two children.

Jacupi said the penalty could potentially derail Thunder’s chances of playing in next year’s National Premier League. ‘‘It is going to be so hard to effectively get through this. Jacupi said it was difficult to sign up members and sponsors. ‘‘We’ve been trying but how do we effectively survive till round nine?

He said the FFA’s advice that the club had no appeal rights to the decision was a ‘‘denial of natural justice’’. A decision to apply for a Supreme Court injunction would best be made before the club’s first home game on April 13. ‘‘We’ll be meeting with our barristers. Max Oldmeadow farewelled Former Holt MP and Dandenong councillor Max Oldmeadow was farewelled at a funeral service at Trinity Uniting Church, Dandenong, last Wednesday. The Chandler High School teacher and ALP politician, who left federal politics in 1975, was more recently a member of Greater Dandenong’s interfaith network. He died on March 21, survived by sons Russell, Ian and Graeme.

BY CAMERON LUCADOU-WELLS EXPERTS in women’s health say families could still be finding ways to have their daughters circumcised — despite the practice being outlawed in Victoria.

While Faduma Salah Musse, a family and reproductive rights education program field worker with the Family And Reproductive Rights Education Program (FARREP) based in Dandenong, says she’s not aware of any specific acts of female circumcision — also described as ‘female genital mutilation’ — in Melbourne’s south-east, it was more likely that families would instead travel overseas for the operation on girls as young as five years.

Such ‘holidays’ are also illegal under Victorian law.

Ms Masse said cultural beliefs supporting the procedure were waning, but any illegal circumcisions would be difficult to detect.

In Victoria, it is illegal to remove or cut any part of female genitalia including the clitoris and labia, or to stitch up the female genital area to narrow or close the vaginal opening.

Those who perform or help find someone to perform a procedure can be jailed for up to 15 years and is regarded as ‘child abuse’ if performed on a female younger than 18 years.

Ms Musse, who grew up in Somalia where the procedure is commonly performed, said the extra threat of jail time and losing one’s child was a heavy deterrent for Australian families.

But in her homeland, uncircumcised girls and women were ostracised. The practice was grounded in custom, not proscribed by religion.

‘‘Back in Africa, it’s something widely believed as the right thing to do,’’ Ms Masse said. ‘‘They’re trying to protect their daughter. They want her to get married and have a good life, and believe it’s difficult to get married if you’re not circumcised.’’

As a community leader, Ms Masse visits schools and community groups to spread word that the practice is illegal and has health consequences including infections, infertility, painful periods and childbirth difficulties. A botched procedure could lead to death.

FARREP manager Trish Plompen said Dandenong was identified as a popular residence for new arrivals from countries most widely practising female circumcision, such as Sudan, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Somalia, Yemen, Oman and Saudi Arabia, India, Indonesia, Malaysia and Pakistan. ‘‘It’s so hard to calculate how prevalent it is in Australia,’’ she said. ‘‘There’s no sign on any medical records saying ‘female circumcision’. That data is not recorded. Someone who has had it performed will often deny it also because of the legal consequences.’’

There have been recent charges in other Australian state: an alleged circumcision of six and seven-year-old girls in Sydney, and a Perth couple for allegedly arranging for their one-year-old daughter to be circumcised in Bali.

However, the FARREP team is confident that its educative fieldwork has reduced the problem locally. ‘‘Five years ago, it was more prevalent,’’ Ms Masse said. ‘‘You ask a young man now: ‘Are you going to marry a girl who’s not circumcised?’

Penny drops on machines that ate my life Most gamblers play the odds to feel something, but Anna Bardsley did it to feel nothing. DANIEL TRAN investigates the hypnotic effects of problem gambling. he grief and frustration that normally demanded Anna Bardsley’s attention faded to a dull ache as the poker machine whirred to life. The bright lights and wordless tunes had an almost hypnotic effect, and soon the aching reminders that her daughter was dead and her husband was consumed with anger were gone.

In the world of ex-gamblers, Bardsley is different. Unlike those who gambled for the rush, she played to escape. ‘‘It was a way to cope with a lot of tragedy and trauma and aftermath of all of that which had gone on for years,’’ she remembers. ‘‘ I was trying to get away from something that was painful and when I went there, I wasn’t feeling anything, [I] literally zoned out.’’

Playing the pokies was recreational family fun until Bardsley had a fight with her husband one night. Walking out to cool off, she opened the door to addiction. ‘‘I went for a drive and the lights beckoned from the side of the road. Literally. I saw the flashing lights of the venue and thought I could go in there,’’ she said. ‘‘And that was the beginning of the end.’’

Bardsley doesn’t know how long her addiction persisted, but she does remember carrying around a Gambler’s Help card.

‘‘I used to just take it out and look at it. And I’d put it back in my purse and think, ‘No, won’t do it now’,’’ she recalls.

But as she continued to suppress her doubts and to put off seeking help, other feelings emerged. ‘‘The shame that you feel covers up any sense of self worth that you have. It’s like a blanket that sits over everything.’’

The book, released by MonashLink Community Health Service, is a compilation of literary work from 11 ex-gamblers on their struggles with addiction. The book was the product of three writing workshops held at MonashLink by author and social advocate Arnold Zable.

Similar workshops have also been held for asylum seekers and Black Saturday survivors as a form of rehabilitation. ‘‘I’d come to see the power of story in creating self understanding,’’ Zable says. ‘‘So there’s the art of story and there’s also, I guess, the healing power of story.’’

The MonashLink group comprised people from all walks of life — students to tradesmen and professionals. ‘‘You begin from the premise that any one of us can be in this predicament, any one of us can become gamblers,’’ Zable says.

The success of the program brought in extra funding to secure another two workshops that were run late last year.

Zable says writing about their struggles empowered former addicts. ‘‘Once you get the techniques for storytelling, once you develop the skill, you’re empowered to tell your story and you’re empowered, I guess, perhaps to take more control of your own life. ‘‘Instead of it being locked up inside, you’re getting it out there. Once you start getting it out

For Bardsley, dealing with the shame through writing has been therapeutic. But she is one of only two authors who were brave enough to put a name on their story. The others used first names or pseudonyms. ‘‘Shame lives in dark places. Shame can’t live when you put light on it and that was why I decided to use my name,’’ she says.

About $10 billion is lost on poker machines every year, the productivity commission says.

This is down from $12 billion.

But despite fewer losses, the Victorian InterChurch Gambling Taskforce says there are now more opportunities for addicts to take a punt. ‘‘It’s a great concern that we’re seeing gambling appearing on Facebook, on phone apps, on all sorts of online applications. We’re seeing aggressive marketing of gambling through sporting events,’’ taskforce chairman Mark Zirnsak says. ‘‘It’s really been pushed on people and really seeking to penetrate into their lives. I think that’s the gambling industry responding to the drop in traditional forms of gambling.’’

Gambler’s Help Southern general manager Sanja Cosic reports an ‘‘anecdotal’’ trend towards more people with online gambling problems seeking help at the service, which covers southern metropolitan Melbourne council areas such as Casey and Greater Dandenong.

Its counsellors help problem gamblers with behavioural strategies and financial management. Greater Dandenong, in particular, has long been an area of high demand, although Ms Cosic was reluctant to say why.

‘‘Our service sees problem gambling as an interaction between person, product and environment. ‘‘So no one thing contributes to the problem but a combination of factors. We need to address the issue as a social determinant of health just as we have approached smoking, drinking and other public health issues.’’

She says it is very difficult to generalise what sort of personalities and life circumstances are most vulnerable. ‘‘In terms of the people we see in the service they cover the whole gamut of the community from pensioners to company directors, students and basically anyone in the community.

Problem gambling does not discriminate and we hope that people will recognise that this is just another issue we can help them manage and does not imply anything negative about them.’’

While the length of Bardsley’s addiction still remains undetermined — the whole period is a blur and she continues to sort through her memories — she does remember eventually calling the Gambler’s Help number. She had decided that she deserved to be happy. ‘‘And I haven’t looked back,’’ she says. ‘‘It’s been a difficult journey of unpacking all that stuff, but it was worth it.’’

Her advice to other gamblers is to take the leap and call the help line. ‘‘Do what you can to reclaim your life because it belongs to you — it doesn’t belong to gambling.’’

T’S hard to think of Russell King’s blazingorange FJ Holden as sad and rusted-out, which is how it looked six years ago when he bought it as a nostalgic keepsake from his younger tearaway days.

Since then he’s rebuilt the car inside and out — with new doors and floor panels, a 1990s motor, gearbox and diff, and a searing paint job to replace its original baby-blue hue.

The FJ — recognised as Australia’s first locallybuilt and designed commercial car model — seems to retain its iconic status.

At last year’s Dandenong Valley All Holden Car Show, Mr King’s car drew a crowd and was duly crowned the ‘people’s choice’. ‘‘But there are some new Australians who don’t know what it is. They say it looks like a new car,’’ he said.

Mr King will again take the short drive from his Heidelberg home for the car show at Greaves Reserve on Sunday.

The former spray painter did ‘‘99 per cent’’ of the work on the car himself.

He guesses his car ‘owes’ him about $30,000 in parts — but could be worth anywhere up to

$50,000 on the open market. Mr King knows of a V8-fitted example costing $47,000. ‘‘My car drives pretty well — a bit like an old car but it gets up and goes with the new cars. It gets up to 100 [km/h], no problem.’’

He is part of a 100-member early Holden car club based in City of Monash; about 70 per cent of the members’ cars are ‘‘works of progress’’.

Scorpion still dreams of AFL

The Casey Scorpions captain recently quit his full-time post as an accountant to dedicate himself more to the rigours of VFL football.

The hard-running defender said the recent influx of mature-age talent into AFL ranks had given him hope that a big league club would come knocking.

But the 25 year old is not hanging his hat on it. ‘‘It is exciting [for VFL players]. It started a couple of years ago with Podsiadly and Barlow and it has been a bit more of a breeding ground for AFL clubs these days,’’ Panozza said. ‘‘Sam Dwyer from Port Melbourne and Matt Jones from Box Hill have been picked up as well.

I guess it is just a matter of being the right fit and hope that you catch someone’s eye that needs a running backman or a winger. ‘‘For the past three years I have been working as an accountant but now I’m doing a few part-

time roles and something different. It reduces a bit of travel that I’m doing and I can dedicate a bit more time to the club and the players which you need to do when you’re captain.’’

Panozza, a former East Ringwood player in the Eastern Football League, recently took on the captaincy for a second season, but it is the first time he has held the post on his own after Kyle Matthews stood down to focus on getting his body right and playing good football.

Amazingly, Panozza has played under six coaches in his eight seasons at the Scorpions, with Rohan Welsh the latest to enter the revolving door.

He said the former Carlton forward had been impressive and was beginning to put his own stamp on the team, which won the minor premiership last season. ‘‘It has been a bit of a merry-go-round as each coach comes and goes,’’ he said. ‘‘Rohan has been great so far.’’

The Scorpions suffered through a tumultuous off-season with coach Brett Lovett, the reigning

VFL coach of the year, standing down to spend more time with his family.

Rumours had been swirling for months that the Scorpions were in financial trouble and it then emerged that Melbourne might cut ties with its VFL affiliate.

After an emergency meeting between the club and AFL Victoria the governing body vowed to support the Scorpions through their time of trouble.

But Panozza said the club had been open and honest with the playing group throughout the ordeal and was working feverishly to try to stabilise the club’s finances. ‘‘It was documented in the media a fair bit but as the club informed us it wasn’t all true,’’ he said. ‘‘There were bits that were but some of the finer details weren’t. ‘‘The club let us know that they were and are trying very hard to get more sponsors and improve the club’s position in Casey and their relationship with Melbourne.

ia Sorento is the larger of two SUVs from the ambitious Korean importer. The smaller Sportage is aimed more at the youth and small family market while the seven-seat Sorento is effectively a crossover people mover with some off-road ability in the AWD variants.

The latest version of the Sorento was launched here in September 2012. Although there were external changes, they didn’t change the overall look of the vehicle.

In people mover mode the management of Sorento’s interior space is critical and the Kia designers have managed to juggle the various passenger/luggage permutations nicely. As is invariably the case with mid-sized seven-seaters the third row is best left to pre-teen children.

The third row of seats folds flat to provide up to 1047 litres of luggage space with the centre seats in place but drops to 285 litres with all seats occupied. The back row seats are split 50/50 to allow some extra seating flexibility. Folding both rows of rear seats opens the rear up to a van-like capacity of 2052 litres.

Star tackling recovery

BY ROY WARD AT his best, Dandenong Thunder midfielder Matt Theodore is one of the most dangerous attackers in the Victorian Premier League.

The 23 year old former Melbourne Victory player has been a key cog in the Thunder’s attack for three seasons but since going down in a heavy tackle during last season’s semi-final against Oakleigh Cannons, has barely been on the pitch.

After struggling with groin and hip pain during the season, the tackle ‘‘finished the job’’ leaving him with two tendons torn off the bone near his groin and more complications in his hip area. The injury forced Theodore to sit out the Thunder’s preliminary final and grand final wins. ‘‘There was some pain when I was playing but that tackle completed it,’’ he said. ‘‘It’s been a very slow recovery, I had to have an operation and the rehabilitation was very basic.’’

Theodore has only just returned to training and while he is working hard, expects to need a month or more to run himself back into a state good enough to return to matches. ‘‘It had been about six months since I had trained so it was good to get out there with the boys and get a feel for the ball,’’ he said. ‘‘But I was wrecked after about five minutes. My whole body was just felt dead but I managed to finish the session.’’

Whether it’s just some stirring from his teammates or not, Theodore even managed to soften the approach of newly signed hardman Steven Topalovic, a player known for his physical play in games or training sessions. ‘‘The boys were very good with

me and no one put in any tackles,’’ he said. ‘‘But Toppa, he is a bit of a monster. He came in with one tackle but I kicked the ball away and he didn’t compete it. If he had, I would have been on the ground for sure.’’

Theodore admits the hardest part of missing the grand final was not on game day but in the celebrations in the days after. ‘‘It was pretty hard watching the final,’’ he said. ‘‘It was great seeing the boys win and I enjoyed it as if I had played but a few days after it was hard knowing I had missed out on something so special.’’

With those sentiments in mind, Theodore can’t wait to reach full fitness and return to matches although he hasn’t set a date for his return, with his advisers telling him he still needed at least another month of

training before being fit to play.

Theodore said the Thunder squad looked sharp and ready for the new season, in which they will start on minus three championship points and without crowds for their first five matches due to crowd misbehaviour during the grand final. ‘‘We just want to get out there and play,’’ Theodore said.

With Topalovic joining the squad along with Zac Walker (Melbourne Heart), Matthew Park (East Fife, Scotland) and Luke Hopper (England), the Thunder look to be in contention for the title again although star forward Luke Sherbon, keeper Stuart Webster and midfielder Ross Thompson have all left the club. ‘‘With the right attitude and a bit of luck we should be right to try and win it again,’’ Theodore said.

SFL set to stage Anzac Day game CLAYTON and East Malvern will play a special stand-alone game at Meade Reserve, Clayton, on Anzac Day. The clubs have had the game endorsed by the RSL, AFL Victoria and the Southern Football League with the special Thursday game to be played in the early afternoon so supporters can take it in before the AFL clash between Collingwood and Essendon.

Clays coach Ben McGee said he was excited about the match which would be the SFL’s only Anzac Day game and possibly the only one in Melbourne’s southern suburbs, with the Eastern Football League and VAFA yet to announce if any of its clubs will play.

McGee instigated the match bringing together the two clubs as his father, Patrick McGee, was a veteran of the Vietnam War and an active member of East Malvern RSL. He said the Clays were working to also involve the Clayton RSL in the match. ‘‘We want to keep the legacy of Anzac Day moving and progressing,’’ he said. ‘‘We want to engage the veteran community and at the same time allow both clubs to pay their respects to fallen servicemen and women.’’

Both clubs and the league have worked together on the game which McGee hopes will be a success.

The club also expects to have musicians available to perform the Last Post and the national anthem before the game as is the custom at Anzac Day sporting events. ‘‘The support from the league has been fantastic,’’ McGee said. ‘‘Matt Duck has been a great help in making sure we dot the ‘Is’ and cross the ‘Ts’.’’

McGee said it was also a way to welcome East Malvern into division 1.

The match could also add more incentive for the club to stay in division 1 for next season. ‘‘My attitude about Clayton is that while I’m here we are never going to get relegated,’’ McGee said. ‘‘And we would love to see East Malvern stay up this season so next year we can return the favour and let them host the Anzac Day game.’’

The clubs will play for a cup, possibly called the Monash Cup, and award medals to the most courageous player in each team.

Keysborough bowler joins charity day three-timers KEYSBOROUGH Bowls Club member Barry Shipperlee became only the third player to win the annual Rotary Club of Noble Park charity bowls day three times when he was successful on March 24.

Last year, Wilma Stevenson of the Dandenong RSL-Recreation Bowling Club and her husband, Iain, who plays at the Narre Warren Bowls Club, became the first bowlers to win the event three times.

With different partners, Shipperlee previously won in 2001 and 2006. This was the 27th year that the charity event has been held and it has 22

raised more than $186,000 has for local charities.

The winning team of Ting Silom, Kevin Deer and Barry Shipperlee was the only four-game winner, finishing 30 shots up.

The battle for runner-up was much closer, with five three-game winners.

After a countback, the team of Graham Aubrey and Eddie Van Loon of Burden Park Bowling Club and Brian Kingwood of Mulgrave Country Club came out on top being 21 shots up.

An opening spider was won by Gary Wastell of Berwick Bowling Club.

The day was organised by the Rotary Club of Noble Park, in conjunction with a committee comprising representatives of all lawn bowls clubs in the city, and Roy Aspinall of Highway Bowls Centre.

At the presentations, organising committee chairman Brian Burton thanked the organising committee, Keysborough Bowls Club, the ladies who provided the catering, bowlers in general and especially the sponsors, who he urged all bowlers to support.

Departures: Chris Hanns (Chelsea Heights), Gavin Blizzard (NTAFL) One to watch: Matt Maginnes, made the top-10 in the league best and fairest last season and the Woods will hope to get even more service from Maginnes this season.

Chances: Ashwood will want to make a move up the ladder this season but it won’t be easy with several sides looking to have improved, none the less a few early wins could be all they need to rise.

Roy Ward says: Ashwood is a hard side to get a read on but teams that want to play finals will know they need to make sure they beat the Woods.

BLACK ROCK Coach: John Burke.

Arrivals: Jack Coleman (VAFA), James Nicholson (VAFA).

Departures: Declan Harrington (St Kilda City), Bradley Kilgore (VAFA).

One to watch: Cory Durie - Skilled midfielder who should excel against division 3 midfields.

Chances: Unless injuries set in, Black Rock should be around the mark come finals time but no other division 3 club will take them lightly.

Roy Ward says: Expect plenty of spies at Black Rock’s first few matches as no one knows what to expect from the former division 2 club, on first look they should be a lock for the finals.

CARRUM PATTERSON LAKES Coach: Andrew Lucas.

Captain: To be announced.

Arrivals: Everyone.

Departures: None.

One to watch: Jarrod Williams will get his chance to shine with the Lions, if his practice match form is anything to go on, he should be in for a good year.

Chances: Hard to know what to expect from the new boys but with good numbers and high emotions in the early rounds they could cause a few upsets.

Roy Ward says:Don’t take the Lions lightly this year and look out in the years ahead, as they want to build a big football club.

DANDENONG Coach: Daniel Atkin.

Captains: Ryan Forsyth and Chris Hatfield.

Arrivals: David Behan (Murrembeena), Dale Jose (Doveton), Warren Kairns (Riddell DFL).

Departures: Andrew Morris (Heatherton).

One to watch: Kevin Atkin, full-forward ruckman who should be more effective with added depth to the side.

Chances: The Redlegs believe they have added experience and size to their team and after three practice match wins, perhaps

LYNDALE Coach: Rodney Benstead.

Captain: To be announced.

Arrivals: Trent Day (Endeavour Hills), Brian Grundy (Doveton Eagles).

Departures: Glen Krepp (Yarra Valley MDFL).

One to watch: Trent Day had a big year with Endeavour Hills last season until injury struck late in the season, he could prove an inspired signing.

Chances: The only way is up for the Pumas after a disappointing 2012. But the list looks stronger and with a few familiar faces returning to the club, expect an improved side this season.

Roy Ward says: Improvement is certain but finals still looks a hard ask, although a few early wins could change that.

Hard contest: Sandown’s Jason Toan will again be co-captain of the Cobras, while Dandenong players like Regan Hall hope to have an ever better season in 2013.

Daniel Atkin says: ‘‘We know we are coming from a long way back but we were competitive in a lot of games last year, we have added six to seven quality people to our side and haven’t lost anyone.’’

DOVETON EAGLES Coach: Paul Davis.

Captain: To be announced.

Arrivals: Brett Hidgcock (Alberton FNL), Nathan Wilson (Doveton), Clint Wilson (Doveton), Peter Dye (Doveton).

Departures: Brian Grundy (Lyndale).

One to watch: Clint Wilson, experienced ruckman who will also size and experience to the Eagles’ midfield.

Chances: The Wilsons will give the Eagles much needed height with Clint to ruck and Nathan to play centre half-forward, with fleet-footed runners and the return of two-time best and fairest Brett Hidgcock, expect big things from the Eagles.

Paul Davis says: ‘‘To finish minor premiers then bow out without winning a final was very hard on us. We couldn’t stop the guys training over November and December, we will give it our best shot this season.’’

ENDEAVOUR HILLS Coach: Michael Roberts.

Captain: To be announced.

Arrivals: David Bickers (Upper Ferntree Gully), Michael Burke (Rowville).

Departures: Trent Day (Lyndale), Corey Ladson (VAFA).

One to watch: Brendan Robinson is one of the more consistent players in the division and his work will help fire his club this season.

Chances: After two years in the SFL, this could be the year Endeavour Hills pushes up the ladder, with a solid list and good pre-season they could be the big improver.

Roy Ward says: Endeavour Hills knows the league and knows what it needs to do to be competitive, word is the club has had a good preseason so perhaps that could turn into early wins.

HALLAM HAWKS Coach: Hayden Fredricks.

Captain: Kieran Smith.

Arrivals: Dan Maskiell (Sandown Cobras).

Departures: No major departures.

One to watch: Kieran Smith led from the front last year and throughout the pre-season, a smart half back who links well with teammates.

Chances: Hallam enters its second season with a third senior side so it has plenty of players. If they can beat their first season tally of three weeks, the Hawks will consider that a success.

Hayden Fredricks says: ‘‘We want to be raising the bar each week and improve on three wins

MT WAVERLEY Coach: Nick Smith.

Captain: Jarrod Wilkin.

Arrivals: None listed.

Departures: Jason D’Cruze (EFL), Ian Taylor (EFL).

One to watch: James Gough had some big games at full-forward last year and with a more organised team, he could be even more effective.

Chances: A VFL player and assistant coach, Smith brings new energy to the Mountain Lions and he expects his side to go all the way this season. After several years getting close to the mark perhaps this year is their time although Sandown, Doveton and Black Rock could all have something to say about that.

Nick Smith says: ‘‘I’m confident I have 30-35 guys who are learning and showing enough to play senior footy this season, finals is a definite expectation just on previous years and I want us to be the best drilled team in the league, if we do that we will be in the finals.’’

SANDOWN Coach: Mick Rossborough.

Captains: Jason Toan and Dan Macklin Arrivals: Mitch Gersbeck (Cranbourne), Lucas Ligt (Cranbourne), Shane Adams (Cranbourne), Nick Morrish (Cranbourne).

Departures: Shay Ferguson (Sale), Dan Maskiell (Hallam).

One to watch: Nick Morrish is a tall, athletic ruckman who will give the Cobras a different look and more running capacity from midfield.

Chances: The Cobras were stung by last year’s grand final loss and should be a deeper and better side while the likes of Toan and league medallist Macklin should see them contend for the premiership again.

Mick Rossborough says: ‘‘We will be a better team no doubt but with Black Rock coming down and Doveton Eagles looking strong, it will be a new competition so we won’t know where we stand until it starts.’’
