New law forces vendors to reveal fire risk By Angela Valente PROPERTY sellers in the Macedon Ranges and Sunbury areas will have to disclose to buyers if their properties are in bushfire-prone areas under new state government rules that come into force from next Wednesday, July 31. Changes to the Sale of Land Act 1962 require the information to be included in the vendor statement or section 32 agreement. Some contracts already disclose whether land falls within a bushfireprone zone, but from next week it will
be illegal not to make the disclosure. A Consumer Affairs spokeswoman said if information in a vendor statement was inaccurate or incomplete, a buyer could rescind the contract at any time before settlement. The law change was recommended by the Victorian Bushfires Royal Commission which was set up after the 2009 Black Saturday bushfires that claimed 173 lives. Designated bushfireprone areas were determined by the Planning Minister in September, 2011. Information about whether a property is within a bushfire-
prone area is available at the state government website Land Channel. Several real estate businesses in the Macedon Ranges contacted by the Weekly said they were not aware of the law changes. Consumer Affairs Minister Heidi Victoria said the changes gave buyers further legal protection. “It’s important to fully research any property you are planning to buy, including finding out about its bushfire safety,” she said. Garry Seddon, Raine and Horne Woodend branch manager, said full
disclosure about land to a buyer was important and necessary. “You have to disclose everything – it is fair enough,” he said. “During summer, things start to dry off and all you hear on the news is about bushfires; it’s in people’s minds. “At some point, common sense has to prevail. If you are building a house in the middle of a state forest there are bushfire concerns, but if you’re in town there isn’t that concern.’’ John Dunlop, of Dunlop Real Estate in Sunbury, supported the full disclosure of all land details, including
whether properties are located within bushfire risk areas. “It’s only the start of what will come eventually, and it’s not hard to find out information as there’s a lot of it around,” he said. “People are spending a lot of money and they should find out all the information they can before they make a purchase.” Mr Seddon believed the changes would not affect property prices. Trentham goes festive in July

SANTA Claus is making his way to Trentham on Saturday for a Christmas in July celebration. Trentham’s combined churches committee is hosting a special “winter warmer” dinner. Committee secretary Glenda Holmes said a three-course dinner with “all the trimmings” would be on offer, as would door prizes. “There will be plenty of entertainment and a wonderful way to warm up on a midwinter’s night,” she said.
Cool Harmony community choir will sing carols and Kyneton band JustUs will also entertain. The event is open to everyone, but places must be booked. Tickets cost $30 and money raised will go towards maintenance of Trentham’s churches. The dinner will be held from 6.30pm at the Trentham Mechanics Institute. — Angela Valente Details: 5424 1572 or, 5424 1523

A blanket of snow covered much of the Macedon Ranges on Saturday as Woodend, Mount Macedon and Trentham shivered through below-zero temperatures. Daylesford and Ballarat also received a dusting of snow on Saturday. A number of families made the most of the first snowfall for this winter season. Having fun among the flakes at the Sanatorium picnic ground were Minna, 7, Ashley, 6, and Griffin, 7. Sharing their delight were members of the Baxter and Cowburn families. Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Richard Carlyon said temperatures at Mount Macedon were ‘‘negative’’ all day, reaching a top of -1 degrees. “From the reports I’ve been hearing, there was a small level of snow at the top of Mount Macedon. The snow level dropped at about 500-600 metres [above sea level] on the weekend, just enough to touch some of those towns. Snow was cleared up quite quickly.” For our picture gallery of the snowfall, go — Angela Valente to sunburyweekly.com.au.

Dance champ a class act
A ‘wonderland’ for families
and I enjoy being on stage.” Last month, Ms Baker was named Australian champion professional female latin soloist at the Australian Salsa Open held in Sydney. She has spent the past five years teaching, performing and competing both in Australia and overseas. After a stint living in Melbourne, Ms Baker has moved back to the Macedon Ranges and wants to teach others salsa dancing. “I really enjoy the beginners’ level of teaching, introducing someone to a brand-new skill right from the start. Most people have little or no dance experience and can be a little frustrated or embarrassed. But it’s such a joy to see the successes six or eight weeks later.”
Woodend will be transformed into a ‘winter wonderland’ this Saturday for a family fun day organised by the Woodend Business and Tourism Association. Children’s activities – face-painting, a best-dressed child and pet parade, circus show, colouring and art competitions and a sausage sizzle – run from 10am-2pm at the Woodend Community Centre.
Equine exhibition Woodbine Art in Malmsbury will host an exhibition, Horsense, featuring horses depicted in paintings, photographs and other media. Artists include Lyn Beaumont, Helen Cole, Ivan Durrant, Susan Long and Randoph Marshall. The exhibition, at 2644 Daylesford Road, runs from August 4 until September 1. The gallery is open from 11am-5pm, Friday-Monday. Details: 5423 2065.

WHEN Elysia Baker dances she gets lost in the music. The Macedon resident is a three-time Australian latin dance champion and now wants to teach her technique to others. Ms Baker grew up in Woodend and started taking classical ballet lessons when she was three. When she was old enough, she travelled twice a week to Melbourne to learn latin dancing. “It became an addiction. The thing that gets me is the music; it’s really infectious. It was good for me because I was living in the country and it opened up my social network and I was meeting new people,’’ she says. “I would see my salsa friends and work colleagues more than I did my normal friends.” And it certainly stuck with her; she loves performing. “It’s a little bit of an escape, a nice way to do exercise without feeling like I’m exercising. “A big pull factor for me is the performance and the competition

Car thieves extend reach to ‘bush’ By Angela Valente THIEVES are targeting vehicles, often left unlocked and in remote areas, according to Macedon Ranges’ top cop. Inspector Ryan Irwin said last week the number of cars being broken into and having property stolen was an ongoing problem in the region. Thieves are targeting cars in residential areas, around railway stations and in remote locations, including in the Wombat State Forest
and the Lerderderg State Park. Last month, the Weekly reported that in the Mount Alexander and Macedon Ranges shires there were 147 cases of theft from cars in the 12 months to March compared with 110 during the previous year. “Trail bike riders are often the victims of these offences,” Inspector Irwin said. “Recreational riders leave vehicles parked in bush locations while motorcycle-riding in the forest and return to find their vehicle has been broken into.” The items stolen include bags

containing riding equipment and clothing, tools, wallets, cash and mobile phones. “A seemingly quiet location should not necessarily make people think there is less chance of becoming a victim of theft. In fact, it is often the remoteness that makes the location more desirable for thieves due to the reduced likelihood of being disturbed,’’ Inspector Irwin said. He said increased patrols were part of the targeted approach to combat the problem in the Macedon Ranges.
Police also rely on help from residents. “We are also urging people to report any suspicious behaviour they observe while in these locations. “We are very keen to hear of any information people might have. It might be as simple as obtaining the registration number of a vehicle that looks out of place or where the driver’s behaviour is unusual.” Report any suspicious behaviour to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or go to crimestoppers.com.au.
Work on a new pavilion at the Romsey sports precinct is finished and it will be open for use this weekend. The $1.8 million pavilion, part of a $5 million sports project for the town, has football and netball change rooms, a community meeting room, kitchen, storage, disabled public toilets and a spectators’ viewing area. The pavilion opening will be celebrated as part of Riddell District Football League’s round 15 RomseyMacedon game. Work on a second pavilion, near Romsey Primary School oval, is almost complete.
SES readier than ever Sunbury SES last week received new equipment – a medium chainsaw, pole saw, two half spine boards, a large protection kit, one chock kit and one block kit – from insurance company AAMI. The company has provided $3.1 million to the SES over the past 11 years.

Well trained for platform beat By Tara Murray SUNBURY railway station and its surrounds will be safer following the introduction of protective services officers (PSOs) last Tuesday, police say. The PSOs will work from 6pm to the last train every day, monitoring the station, bus stop and commuter-parking area. The officers have the power to detain anyone who threatens public safety. They can also confiscate weapons and issue fines. Sunbury’s Senior Sergeant Tim Douglas said the officers would complement the work police were doing in the area. “[Their presence] will be great for the whole transport hub and help contribute to an increased perception of safety and security at the station. “We have all [police and residents] heard about the antisocial behaviour, criminal damage and thefts from – and of –

vehicles around the station. “The presence of these guys, I think, will be reflected in the results [lower crime figures] as happened at the Broadmeadows station when PSOs were introduced.” The Weekly has previously reported concerns of residents and councillors over the incidents of graffiti and antisocial behaviour at and around the station. Transit police’s Sergeant Tony Smith said the officers patrolling Sunbury all had a minimum of six months’ experience in the role. Sergeant Smith is in charge of the PSOs at four stations along the Sunbury line. As well as Sunbury, the stations are Sunshine, St Albans and Watergardens. “Our experiences in Sunshine and the rest of the line are that the mere presence of officers makes a perception [for people] of being safer,” Sergeant Smith said.

Voters to grill McEwen hopefuls in debate By Angela Valente and Tara Murray
The Weekly asked the five candidates vying for the seat of McEwen to state what they see as the biggest issues for the electorate, and to spell out their vision: Rob Mitchell Job creation, security and cost of living are the biggest issues. I want to see Labor’s nation-changing reforms including DisabilityCare, the NBN, Better Schools funding and our Clean Energy Future programs implemented.
Bruce Stevens The community needs recreational areas and links to vital Melbourne services. Economic disadvantages impacting these include rising cost of living, the sale of public assets, loss of manufacturing and farmers leaving the land.
Trevor Dance The greatest issue facing McEwen residents is lack of good grassroots representation in government. This negatively affects funding, infrastructure, healthcare, employment, business, farming and education.
Donna Petrovich Reducing the cost of living for families and the abolition of carbon tax are the big issues for me. The fiscal mismanagement of the Gillard-Rudd government has caused more than $200 billion of debt for Australians. It is time for a change.
Neil Barker If not addressed, climate change will devastate the environment and the economy. Out-ofpocket health costs are also increasingly affecting us. Public health needs more support. Inequality in educational resource allocation must also be addressed.
MMP06899-02-a23Jul©FCNVIC
The debate will be held at Cope Williams Winery, 160 Glenfern Road in Romsey on August 9 from 7.30am to 9.30am. Tickets cost $50, including breakfast. An early-bird discount applies before 9pm this Thursday. Details: election13mcewen. eventbrite.com.au.

FIVE candidates for the federal seat of McEwen will battle it out at a ‘great debate’. Organised by the Romsey Region Business and Tourism Association (RRBATA), the breakfast debate will involve candidates answering prepared questions from the public in an open forum. Taking part will be preselected candidates Donna Petrovich of the Liberal Party; Greens’ Neil Barker; Palmer United Party’s Trevor Dance; Bruce Stevens of Katter’s Australian Party; and incumbent Labor MP Rob Mitchell. RRBATA president Jenny Stillman said the debate was an opportunity for candidates to spruik their ideas and for residents to see the candidates perform. “We’re excited to host what will be the opportunity for the McEwen community to meet all the candidates and tease out those federally administered issues relating to the
McEwen community on both local and national levels.” Journalist, producer and communications expert Tracey Curro will moderate the debate. Ms Stillman encouraged people attending to submit questions ahead of the event. “At this point, we’re interested to see what the community wants to throw up. We haven’t put up the questions we want answered; it’s not about us, it’s about the broader community. Across the electorate, there will be broad issues and very specific issues to people. We’ll be interested to see what people say.” Nominations for the federal seat of McEwen close on August 22.

Vandals don’t let up on laundrette
Two charged over burglary TWO men have been charged following a burglary on Dalrymple Road, Sunbury, last Thursday. Police were called to a property on Dalrymple Road, near Deverall Road, about noon after an alarm alerted a neighbour about a break-in. Police air wing and local units were used in the search for two men, who had fled on foot. A 23-year-old Melton man was arrested about 2pm on Thursday, near Murray Road, Gisborne. Another man, a 41-year-old from Diggers Rest, was later found at a property on McGregor Road, Gisborne. A detective senior constable with Hume CIU said the investigation was ongoing. The 23-year-old has been charged with two counts of burglary, two counts of theft, possessing a handgun and ammunition without a licence, ‘proceeds of crime’, and driving while disqualified. The other man was charged with one count of theft and burglary.

Just too much: Alan Fraser is sick of vandal attacks on his laundrette.
It’s the word on the wire.
IN his 35 years of running a Sunbury laundrette, Alan Fraser has not seen such a high incidence of graffiti and vandalism as over the past eight months. “I’ve had equipment damaged three times in the last eight months,” Mr Fraser said. “It’s devastating to come in and see the machines trashed and treated with no respect.” He said the attacks had caused $13,000 in damage. “The first lot caused $5000 damage, which was the biggest cost from the vandalism. “I’ve had to throw out a $3000 washing machine due to the damage caused. They have smashed glass on the dryers and have put graffiti over everything. They are lucky they haven’t electrocuted themselves when damaging the equipment.” Tired of the attacks, Mr Fraser installed security cameras that cost
him $7000. But these failed to deter vandals, who targeted the business again on June 24. “We reported it to police, as we have to every time,’’ he said. “This time, though, I printed out photos from the camera and went around Sunbury trying to see if anyone knows who they are. “In one-and-a-half hours, I was able to get a name of one of them.” There have been about 580 graffiti reports to Hume council in the past year, while the clean-up bill for the past five years is more than $4 million. “Too many people turn a blind eye to what is happening, until someone else stands up first,” said Mr Fraser. “I’ve seen it on the trains. I will stand up and say that’s not good enough and others will then agree with me.’’ Details on the latest burglary: go to facebook.com/eyewatchhumepsa

What is this Referendum on Local Councils all about? When our Constitution was written more than 112 years ago there was no mention of Federal Government funding for Local Councils or community projects. This means there is now an unforeseen loophole in the way many community projects are currently funded. It means important funds for community projects are open to challenge because Federal funding is not referred to in the Constitution. If any challenge is successful, Federal funding for important community facilities and services like ‘Roads to Recovery’, Child Care Centres, Libraries, Community Sports Grounds, Community Centres, Swimming Pools and Public Parks may have to be withdrawn. That’s why there is a referendum to bring the Constitution up to date – to ensure and protect the way many important community projects are funded.
Here are some more important things to know. Does this have the support of Federal Parliament with members voting in favour by a margin of 179 to 10? Does this have the support of Local Councils in all States and Territories around Australia?
YES YES
Is updating the Constitution the only way to legitimise direct Federal funding for these community needs?
YES
Will projects remain subject to public scrutiny and the proper checks and balances before approval?
YES
Will Local Councils still be accountable and answerable to State Governments?
Has this update been supported by an independent committee of Constitutional experts? Does voting NO really put funding for local projects and services like ‘Roads to Recovery’, Childcare Centres, Libraries, Community Sports Grounds, Swimming Pools, Community Centres and Public Parks at risk?
YES YES YES

ust imagine how great it would be if our kids never had to hear the words: I have bad news – it’s cancer,” Carla Lunardi says, eyes fixed on two little boys wobbling down the path before her on trikes with training wheels. The children Lunardi was warned she might never be able to have – Xander, almost 4, and Oskar, 22 months – are her own best evidence and motivation for the Ride to Conquer Cancer. She was 15 when she was diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma – a form of cancer that typically afflicts teenagers and is often misdiagnosed as “growing pains” or a sports injury because of the gradual onset that may begin in soft tissue or bone. Lunardi, too, initially believed her persistent sore back was down to dancing classes five nights a week. It was when she was doing work experience at a kindergarten near her Werribee home that the disease really made itself known. “I was bending over to talk to the little kids and my back just kept cramping,” she says of that frightening day 15 years ago. “It got to the point I could hardly breathe. I went home,
which was just around the corner from the kinder and just lay on the floor. I could not move – I was in so much pain.” A CT scan revealed what appeared to be an abscess but – as the subsequent biopsy revealed – was far more sinister. “It all happened very, very, very quickly,” Lunardi says. “Within two or three weeks I went from dancing to being a cancer patient.” Early on Lunardi was encouraged to have some of her ovarian tissue frozen because there was a real risk the months of chemotherapy and six weeks of radiation treatment would destroy her fertility. “It was a little bit surreal as a 15-year-old to have to think so far into the future,” she says. “Even going through my treatment the severity of it didn’t dawn on me. I think it was part of my coping mechanism that I just did what I had to do, day in and day out, just to get by to survive. I think it was one or two years later that it kind of hit me how critical it was.” By then Lunardi had graduated from being a cancer patient to a survivor. But many of the friends she made through CanTeen – the support group for young people with cancer – did not.
“Through CanTeen we made a lot of friends and we lost a lot of friends,” she says. “There was a point in the early 2000s that I was going to more funerals each year than birthdays.” The disease continues to take its toll on her family, claiming the life of Lunardi’s paternal grandmother in 2007, while on her mother’s side her Aunty Lee is battling Hodgkin’s lymphoma. “That’s the thing about cancer – it’s just not fair,” Lunardi says. “I think that’s why it is so important that everybody gets behind the fight, because it really does affect everybody whatever their age, race or socio-economic standing.” For Lunardi, that means getting back on her bike and joining her younger siblings and Aunty Michelle for the Ride to Conquer Cancer. “I thought, if they can do it, I’ll have a crack. Before we started training I hadn’t been on a bike since I was, like, 15 and couldn’t do more than three kilometres – a few minor details,” she says with a laugh. “But now I feel good. I’ll do all 200 kilometres from Melbourne to Mornington and back for sure.” Her youngest brother, Nicko, can attest to the transformative power of the ride.
“I was a bit of a stuff-up before the ride last year,” he says. “I was a bit down with myself and unhappy at where I was in my life. “But I got such a positive response from everyone around me getting together and helping me out, it put a bit of faith and confidence back into me. My training was like Forrest Gump training. It was just ride, ride, ride and ride some more. I had a really bad bike and did the whole thing in skinny jeans, but when I finished I had never felt better about myself.” So much so that this year he’s signed up to the Vision Crusaders, a national team of 26 riders and four crew who will tackle all five Australian rides and a sixth in New Zealand – a staggering total of 1200 kilometres over six weekends. And the big difference isn’t just the extra distance he’s prepared to go. This time he’ll be wearing Lycra. The first Ride to Conquer Cancer is in Queensland on August 16-17. The Victorian Ride to Conquer Cancer takes place on October 26-27. Trivia to burnish Bluestone
One scheme. One focus on individuals. One commitment to lifelong support. From 1 July, Australia’s current support system for people living with disability is being progressively replaced with DisabilityCare Australia. This new scheme will help provide a better quality of life for Australians with a significant and permanent disability, and for their families and carers too.
What’s new about DisabilityCare Australia? DisabilityCare Australia is a new way of funding personalised support for people with disability. As well as looking at a person’s immediate needs, it will take a lifelong approach and enable people with disability to have choice and control over their supports. It will focus on early intervention, recognising that timely support can minimise the impact of a disability on individuals, families and carers. Assistance will be provided at the right time, rather than only once people reach crisis.
Who is eligible? DisabilityCare Australia will help people who have a significant and permanent disability and who need assistance with everyday activities. This includes people whose disabilities are attributed to intellectual, cognitive, neurological, sensory, or physical impairment, or a psychiatric condition.
Friends of Kyneton’s Bluestone Theatre will hold a trivia night on Saturday, August 3, to raise money for the refurbishment of the theatre. There will be prizes, entertainment and a light supper provided. Tickets are $10. The first questions are asked at 7.30pm at the Kyneton Mechanics Institute. Details and bookings: Alan Stone, 5422 1807.
Tasty prize Damian Sandercock, of Kyneton’s Piper Street Food Company, has won the ‘From the Paddock’ category at the ABC Delicious Produce awards for his traditional English pork pie and pork rillettes. The national awards recognise outstanding contributions by small and artisan producers.
Kindergartens celebrate Works on kindergartens in Macedon and Woodend will be officially revealed today by Minister for Children and Early Childhood Development Wendy Lovell and the Macedon Ranges council. The work has provided upgrades to buildings, toilets, flooring and storage.

Will it affect my Disability Support Pension? No. Your Disability Support Pension will not be affected.

Agency welcomes carbon tax relief By Tara Murray
SHAWN SMITS
A SUNBURY welfare agency has welcomed the extra cash local families will get with the axing of the carbon tax, but it believes many will continue to struggle financially. Prime Minister Kevin Rudd announced last week that the average household would be $380 a year better off after the nation moves to an emissions trading scheme with a floating price of about $6 a tonne from July 1 next. Under the previous arrangement, the carbon price would have been about $25 a tonne. Careworks SunRanges’ Nicky Gallus said the number of clients seeking help from the agency had grown substantially in the past two years. “Any money that families will save is lovely, but I’m not sure how much of an impact it will have,” she said. “We’ve had one person who is
living on $200 a week coming in for food. After rent, car rego and petrol, there isn’t much left. “Bills continue to increase and people are coming here pretty much overwhelmed with nowhere else to go. “Some have debt collectors chasing them for unpaid bills, so we sit with them and work out payment plans.” Ms Gallus said that for many people who faced growing costs, the first option was to sell their cars. “In rural areas like Lancefield and Romsey there’s not many buses, so it makes life really hard.’ she said. “One of our clients walks an hour to take the kids to school.” Sunbury pensioner Doug Bishop said he would wait until next year when the ETS was introduced to know how it would impact him. “The everyday things keep going up,” he said. “As a pensioner, things like increases to water rates, car rego and licence fee really hit hard.”
Charity drive helps women bag jobs
Here for you: Elusive Style staff member Mel Paradiso is ready for the charity drive.
HER handbag is one thing most women couldn’t live without and many may have several others sitting unused in their wardrobe. Sunbury’s Sylvia Ryan has decided to put women’s fascination with handbags to good use and help charity group Dress for Success, an international non-profit organisation that helps clients find jobs and remain employed. Part of the service is providing clothing and accessories for interviews. “The charity helps kit out underprivileged women for interviews to give them confidence,” says Ms Ryan, who is collecting the bags through her shop, Elusive Style. “When women look good, we feel good, too.” Ms Ryan said people could donate their old handbags at a special event for the charity at her store on August 2. There will be special offers for women who take part in the charity mission. The event includes prizes, food and drinks, and a spring fashion event. — Tara Murray Details: 8746 8685

Orphans sing for hope: Uganda’s Watoto Children’s Choir will perform in Sunbury on Sunday. The choir, made up of orphaned children, including Regina (pictured front), has been travelling the world since 1994 as ambassadors for millions of children in Africa, orphaned as a result of HIV/AIDS, war and poverty. The choir is now on a four-month tour of Australia and has previously travelled to Brazil, Canada,
China, Europe, Asia and the US. Its music is an energetic fusion of contemporary gospel and traditional African rhythm. Watoto founder and pastor Gary Skinner says: “Through the choir’s Concert of Hope, we share a message of transformation by telling the story of Africa’s rescued orphans and women.’’ The concert is at the Sunbury Baptist Church, 207 Gap Road from 6pm.

The Macedon Ranges council has created division among the Gisborne community by promising one community group that it will protect the Daly Reserve, while at the same time promising another an earlyyears hub in the same reserve. The council is also selling off parkland in Gisborne to build a new netball complex, hoping no one notices it is also spending the same amount on its own office expansion. I understand the issue is overcrowding, yet there are many ways to solve this problem that are not as costly for the community. It is a matter of priority. Alison Joseph, Bullengarook The results of Macedon Ranges council’s community satisfaction survey reflect higher levels of community satisfaction with the council’s performance and direction. While there is always room for improvement, in all five core performance areas we have either exceeded or are on par with other large rural shires. With regard to the budget adopted
on June 12, an amendment was made to reduce rate revenue by $723,000 and lower the average rate increase from the proposed 6.9 per cent to 4.9 per cent. This saving was achieved by removing the purchase of new land for a proposed early-years hub in Gisborne. The council will instead consider using a small portion of the council-owned site of Daly Reserve, and develop a master plan for the reserve to protect its environmental significance. We will also continue to consider the pine plantation site. These are economically challenging times, so we have sought to keep rates as low as possible while maintaining all our services and allowing for much-needed capital works. The business has a range of internal and external doors in stock – pivot or hinge - and provides free weather seals with every door sold until August 31. To Buy or to Sell First For homeowners aiming to sell their home and buy another, it’s the classic real estate question -- buy or sell first? If you sell first you may find yourself under a tight deadline to find another house, or be forced in temporary accommodation. If you buy first, you may be saddled with two mortgage payments for at least a couple months. You may need the money from the sale of your original home in order to prequalify for a loan for your new home. It really comes down to risk; whether you want the risk of owning two houses, or possibly none at all. For most people, the stress level is lower when you sell first. You have time to get pre-approved for your new mortgage and see all the housing options in the price range you’d like to buy. You end up in a short-term rental with the cash in your pocket and a pre-approved loan, so you look like a cash buyer when you make an offer on the home you finally decide on. We at Dunlop Real Estate have considerable experience in assisting clients with the intricacies of a simultaneous sale and purchase. If you are considering such a move, or have any other real estate matter in mind, feel free to call me, John Dunlop on 9744 2555 or call into our friendly offices at Sunbury and Gisborne for a chat.

Cash in hand Make your credit card work for you, not the other way around
F
or many people, the words ‘‘I’ll just put it on the credit card’’ are all too common. When consumers are not aware of the pitfalls, there can be dire outcomes. Australian-owned online financial service Cashfirst says credit can be an important part of balancing everyday finances, but to make it
1
Break the cycle of debt before it starts Consumers who can’t repay the card limit should decrease it to a level where they can pay back their monthly spend in full.
2
work, cardholders must avoid the debt trap. “The key is to be aware of hidden pitfalls and make the credit card work in the card holder’s favour, rather than against,” Cashfirst general manager Richard Shepherd says. Shepherd offers the following tips for credit cardholders:
Quick cash in hand means less in the pocket later Cash advances are an expensive way to borrow money and are usually charged at a higher rate with significant additional fees, so try to avoid them.
3
Can’t afford it now . . . will it be affordable later? Think about whether the item/service is necessary. If it is, figure out how much needs to be repaid each month to avoid falling into further debt.
4
Making the minimum payments only sets credit card holders back If credit card holders only make minimum repayments on their credit card (2-3 per cent of the balance), it could take 15 years to pay back the loan, and that’s only if they don’t spend more.
5
Know the interest rate Interest rates are generally around 20 per cent a year with many cards also charging annual fees. Check what interest rates and fees the lender is charging, then look around for better deals.

SHAWN SMITS
Sunbury Lions’ stingy defence excelled in trying mid-winter conditions to enable a dominant 58-17 win against Melton South on Saturday. The Lions are on a three-game streak of holding opponents to less than 20 goals in Ballarat Netball League A-grade. But the winning streak has failed to move Sunbury out of fourth place as the top teams continue to pull away from the rest of the competition. The Lions (9-1-2, 42 points) trail Melton (9-2, 44) by half a game and top pair North Ballarat City and East Point (both 11-1, 48) by a game and a half. Sunbury had winners on every line, with defender Beck Anstey, mid-courter Prue Stanley and goaler Michelle Robertson (37) its best. Melton beat Bacchus Marsh 50-16, East Point beat Redan 40-30, Lake Wendouree beat Ballarat 42-28 and North Ballarat City beat Sebastopol 68-32. Sunbury plays Lake Wendouree (sixth, 6-6) this weekend.
In Riddell District Netball League A-grade, Lancefield’s late run at a top six spot continued with a 50-36 win against Broadford on Saturday. The Tigers (seventh, 6-7) moved to within a game of sixth-placed Rupertswood (sixth, 7-6) after Rupo lost 58-42 to Sunbury Kangaroos. Sunbury Roos led start to finish against Rupo on Saturday with 39-goal shooter Kila Elavo the dominant player. Riddell Bombers held on to second spot with a comfortable 66-23 victory against Diggers Rest, with Jessica Dominko, Taylah Keogh and Cayley Armstrong leading the way. Macedon was equally comfortable in holding on to fourth spot with its 63-16 victory against Woodend Hesket. In the weekend’s other match, Melton Centrals continued their unbeaten season on top of the ladder with a 65-19 win against Rockbank. RDFL Round 15: Romsey v Macedon, Sunbury v Lancefield, Wallan v Woodend Hesket. Byes: Rockbank, Broadford, Rupertswood, Riddell Bombers.

Diggers hand Riddell reality check By DANIEL PAPROTH Diggers Rest ended Riddell’s unbeaten streak in emphatic style on Saturday, thumping the Bombers 12.7 (79) to 2.6 (18). Riddell remains on top of the Riddell District Football League ladder, a game clear of Diggers Rest and Sunbury, but it was thoroughly outplayed in wet and heavy conditions at Diggers Rest Reserve. Play was heavily contested early in the first term, but Diggers Rest slowly worked its way to the top, slotting the only three goals of the quarter to lead by 17 at quartertime. As it turned out, the Burras’ 3.1 (19) was more than Riddell

could manage for the entire game. The Burras kicked three goals in each term, but in the conditions they were worth far more. A 29-point half-time lead felt matchwinning – it wasn’t until late in the second term that James Nolan finally got Riddell’s first goal. Up until that point you had to wonder whether Riddell would even get one, such was Diggers’ dominance. The Burras smashed the Bombers through the middle, a handful of players regularly streaming forward; there were eight goalkickers. In defence, they always seemed to have players drifting back to at least halve contests if not outright

Gisborne struck first on Saturday against Sandhurst, but it was all downhill thereafter as the Bulldogs fell from the Bendigo Football League top five. The weekend was also a bad one for the netball A-grade team, which lost after an 11-game winning streak. The percentage hit from the 10.14 (74) to 5.5 (35) defeat contributed to Gisborne being bumped from the five, down to sixth (7-5, 121) behind Sandhurst (7-5, 140) and half a game behind fourth-placed South Bendigo (7-1-4). The Bulldogs trailed by two points at quarter-time but would kick only one goal in the second quarter and none in the third as Sandhurst opened up a 20-point lead at the final change. Any hopes of a Gisborne comeback were ended by four consecutive Sandhurst goals in the last Gisborne returns to Gardiner Reserve this Saturday to play Strathfieldsaye from 2.20pm. In A-grade netball, Sandhurst stunned Gisborne in the opening quarter to set up its 40-35 win. Sandhurst won the first quarter 15-5 and held the lead for the rest of the afternoon. Gisborne (11-1) still enjoys a gap at the top from Kangaroo Flat (9-1-2), while Sandhurst (8-4) consolidated third. In reserves, Kyneton 2.2 (14) lost to Strathfieldsaye 4.5 (29). — with Luke West, Bendigo Advertiser
Hopefully, we can get in a good position to give it a crack because you’re never promised premierships.” For Riddell coach Troy Scoble it was “as bad as we’ve played all year”. “We were totally outplayed. They got on the front foot early and we were not able to arrest the momentum at all. Diggers were terrific,” he said. “As soon as Diggers got on top they really controlled the play. “We’ve got a hell of a lot of work to do.”
win them. That Riddell was held to 18 points in a year in which it had averaged 104 was testament to the Burras’ defensive efforts. Brent Tuckey booted three for Diggers, while the likes of Tom Evans and Craig Marshall were sensational. Diggers coach Jamie Elliott said effort was the difference between this win and the loss to Lancefield the week before. “That’s all I ask for, a bit of effort,” he said. “I thought we were terrific today. We set up really well and there was no big-headedness about it. It was just go out and get the job done. “I think we can beat everyone.
Triple grapple: Diggers Rest’s Mark Freeth finds himself out-numbered in a scuffle with Riddell opponents Robert Henry and David Bruno.
Lancefield’s remarkable charge towards the Riddell District Football League finals continued on Saturday with a 13.13 (91) to 4.4 (28) win over Broadford. The Tigers’ fourth consecutive win shoots them into fifth on the ladder, a game clear of Rupertswood, Macedon and Melton Centrals. Lancefield kicked four goals to one in the opening term to take a 22-point lead into the first break. Broadford got within 15 points by half-time but went scoreless in the third as the Tigers jumped out to an unassailable 37-point lead. If the Tigers can make the finals they will have earned their spot, with games against Sunbury, Rupertswood and Riddell in the run home. Rockbank has thrown its name into finals contention with a 5.9 (39) to 4.7 (31) win over Melton Centrals. The Rams, ninth with a 5-8 record, will need some luck but have an easier run home than most with games against Macedon, Kilmore and Broadford. Centrals slipped to eighth and possibly out of contention, given Diggers Rest and Romsey are future opponents. Rupertswood is clinging to sixth place despite managing just one goal in a scrappy 1.9 (15) to 5.10 (40) loss to Sunbury. Macedon kept its finals hopes alive with a 10.7 (67) to 1.7 (13) win over Woodend-Hesket. Macedon plays Romsey this weekend before Rockbank and Wallan in its final two games. Kilmore got within 14 points of its first victory but couldn’t do enough, going down 3.1 (19) to 4.9 (33) against Wallan. — Daniel Paproth
inbrief Ballarat FL Sunbury returned to the winners’ list with a 16.7 (103) to 8.6 (54) win against Melton South on Saturday. The Lions led by two points at quarter- time and 15 at half-time before holding Melton South goalless in the second half. Ross Sleight booted five goals for Sunbury. Ballarat beat Lake Wendouree by 74 points, Redan beat East Point by 26, North Ballarat City smashed Sebastopol by 141, and Bacchus Marsh beat Melton by 90. Sunbury plays Lake Wendouree in Ballarat this weekend but has requested the match be moved away from Wendouree Reserve due to the state of the ground. Basketball Sunbury remains alive in the battle for fourth spot in Big V men’s division 1 Terrill pool, but will need an almighty favour from Hume neighbour Cragieiburn this weekend. Sunbury took care of business with an 88-83 win against Warrnambool on Saturday to improve to seven wins and 13 losses, two games behind Melbourne Uni (9-12). Sunbury has a doubleheader this weekend – at Blackburn on Saturday then at home against Altona on Sunday. Nothing less than two wins will suffice, while Sunbury also needs Craigieburn to beat Melbourne University on Sunday. In division 1 women, Sunbury lost 73-45 to Warrandyte. The Lady Jets finish their season at home against Altona from 1pm on Sunday.
Soccer Rain-related postponements wiped out most of the FFV state league fixtures on Saturday. Sunbury’s topof-the-table clash away at Sporting Whittlesea was no exception The match at RGC Cook Reserve in Thomastown didn’t go ahead and will be rescheduled for later in the state league 3 north-west campaign. Sunbury’s next fixtured match is back at Langama Park against Yarraville from 3pm this Saturday. In Metro League 1, Gisborne lost 3-0 to Cleeland United on Sunday. In Metro league 2 north-west, Kyneton won 2-0 against FC Strathmore. In women’s state 3 north, Kyneton was on the wrong end of a 15-0 hiding by Watsonia Heights.
VWFL Sunbury secured second spot on the north-west division 1 ladder with its 18-point win against La Trobe Uni on Sunday. The Lions’ 8.5 (53) to 5.5 (35) win means Sunbury (9-5) will finish second behind Bendigo (14-0) with one round remaining.
