MY LAST day at the gardens will be November 2, one week short of 20 years. We’ll have a staff farewell a few days beforehand.

I remember my first day – Monday, November 9, 1992 – very well!

I was planning to stay for a good length of time, but not necessarily 20 years. I’ve ended up being the secondlongest-serving director in the 166-year history of the RBG. Only William Guilfoyle – 36 years – served longer.

I was born and bred in Sydney, lived in Canberra, Aberdeen (Scotland) and Wellington (New Zealand) before coming to Melbourne in 1989.

My wife and I live in Balwyn North, which we love. Our own garden is a modest one with a mix of Australian and exotic plants.

We have two adult daughters, both of whom were married in the Royal Botanic Gardens.

My proudest achievements as director of the gardens have been reinvigorating the institution after a period of decline in the 1980s – new collections and landscapes at RBG Melbourne, establishing the Australian Research Centre for Urban Ecology in 1998 (now internationally recognised) and creating the marvellous 18-hectare Australian Garden at RBG Cranbourne. The second and final stage of this new botanic garden celebrating the colour and diversity of Australia’s plants will be opened on October 20.

Visitor numbers at both RBG Melbourne and RBG Cranbourne have steadily grown – in 2011-12 there were 1.63 million visits at the Melbourne Gardens and 147,500 at the Cranbourne Gardens.

Travel is high on my retirement plan list – including botanic gardens

Report points to online splurging

TOORAK has ranked as Melbourne’s third highest area for online retail spending with a per-shopper average of $962, according to the NAB Online Retail Sales Index analysis of spending by postcode.

At the top, Canterbury and Brighton reached more than $1000 per shopper. The numbers have called

into question the need for online options from specialty shopping strip business owners.

The figures represent part of an increasing national trend proving Australia’s growing fondness to spend online.

According to the report released on August 31, online retail spending totalled $11.7 billion in the year ending July 2012. It represents a 5.3 per cent share of the traditional retail

sector, but when food and beverages are excluded online sales rise to 8.7 per cent.

Victoria ranked second highest for online retail spending at 23.4 per cent behind New South Wales’ 33.8 per cent.

Armadale resident and final year RMIT Visual Merchandising student Charlotte Garrisson headed one of three student groups who revamped Country Road South Yarra’s windows last week. Unveiled after nine weeks of preparation, the annual Window Project involved teams of five students designing and installing the window treatments with a budget of $1200. Garrisson’s window is a colourful mixture of bowls and mugs, representing the retail chain’s crockery collection. “It’s been really beneficial to see what it is like to work in a professional retail environment where our creativity is encouraged,” she said. Country Road creative director Sophie Holt commended the students on their exciting work. The creations will be on display until October 12 at Country Road’s flagship store on the corner of Toorak Road and Chapel Street.

Council tilt all in the family

NINETEEN year-old student Jimi Athanasopoulos is following in his father Tas Athanasopoulos’ footsteps with his bid for a seat in Stonnington’s East ward in the upcoming council elections.

He is joined by sister Tini Athanasopoulos who has nominated for a seat in South ward.

Jimi (pictured), a design student at Swinburne’s Prahran campus, says he decided to stand for council after community anger boiled over in response to the state government’s TAFE funding cuts.

“I want to see the community better served in terms of tertiary education and a fair go for TAFE students in Stonnington,” he said.

The 19-year-old expressed concerns with Stonnington council’s lack of young blood around the decision-making table, saying it is “in need of a fresh approach to a number of key issues”.

According to father and existing

North ward Stonnington councillor Tas Athanasopoulos, his two children made the choice to run for council of their own accord following the state government’s TAFE cuts and continued frustration with council decisions.

“They are strong-minded young people who want to have their say about their community,” Cr Athanasopoulos said. ‘‘They are completely independent of each other.’’

With their father renominating for his seat, each of the Stonnnington municipality’s wards includes a member of the Athanasopoulos family.

Jimi and Tini join a handful of young guns aged 25 and under vying for a spot at the council table.

Sixteen-year long councillor Anne O’Shae, who recently withdrew from the election race, said it is a good sign that young people are taking interest in local matters and “it is important that the community doesn’t make any preconceptions about their age and listen to what they have to say”.

JUST four out of the nine current Stonnington councillors have renominated for the 2012 council elections, leaving South Ward without a familiar face standing for re-election.

The community of Malvern, Glen Iris and East Malvern was shaken after all three councillors Anne O’Shae, Judy Hindle and Greg Hannan pulled out of the race.

Cr Hannan announced his intention to step down in the lead up to the birth of his second child and “to focus on my corporate career”.

However, current mayor John Chandler, Meliner Sehr, Claude Ullin and Tas Athanasopoulos will all stand again.

Across the state, the number of candidates nominated for the October 27 elections has risen from 1975 in 2008 to 2004 this year. However, Stonnington has registered the same number of nominees as 2008 with 36 in total.

Despite two of the city’s longestserving female councillors, Anne O’Shae and Judy Hindle, bowing out of the race, 11 women have registered their for the Stonnington elections.

A total of 656 women have registered across the state, up 39 from the 2008 elections.

Local Government Minister Jeanette Powell welcomed the rise in female candidates saying it provides “a greater range of experience around the council decision-making table”.

Among this year’s candidates are a handful of independents including executive committee member of planning backlash group Malvern East Group’s Matthew Knight, and

Hot on the list of campaigning points was planning, with the majority of candidates announcing intentions to revisit the councils planning strategy following the state government’s zone reforms and VCAT’s July decision to allow a 466-apartment development at 590 Orrong Road.

Open space, cyclist safety and heritage overlays were also named as campaign issue by Foster, Koce, the Stonnington Greens and Knight.

Council elections will be held on October 27 with attendance voting compulsory for all entitled residents and ratepayers.

JACARANDAS in a Toorak street are to stay after a residents’ survey.

The Ross Street poll was prompted by a petition signed by 46 residents in April asking that Stonnington council replace all 26 jacarandas with pear treesas they made Ross Street unattractive.

Last December, council estimated it would cost $15,600 to $20,800 to replace them.

A council-commissioned arborist said some trees should be replaced with the same species. An arborist commissioned by the petitioners said the ‘‘streetscape is lacking in aesthetic value and this is primarily due to the poor quality of the street tree planting’’.

The council was also contacted by two residents wanting the trees retained.

Council sent surveys to 227 residents and businesses on June 6. Sixty-five ratepayers did not vote, 24 wanted the trees replaced while 41 sought retention. Last month, councillors backed the majority.

Malvern’s men’s Probus Club is celebrating after a successful membership drive at last week’s open day in the lead up to Stonnington Seniors Festival starting on Sunday.

The club’s goal of doubling its membership numbers from 25 to 50 is now much closer after an additional 14 people showed their support for the Rotary Club initiative. ‘‘We are very pleased with the result and we are looking forward to hosting a second open day on October 23,’’ said club secretary and public officer John Pennicott.

According to Mr Pennicott, the club was in desperate need of new members to ensure its survival.

Member and United Nations World Health Program professor Graham Brown was the guest of honour at the open day.

Since opening two years ago, the Burwood Road business has grown from three to 14 employees and was recognised as Melbourne’s finest butcher in The Age Good Food Shopping Guide 2011. Now Cannings is celebrating becoming carbon neutral.

Canning, who lives in Prahran, is frank about the environmental cost of operating a business.

“I started seeing how much you waste, how much power you use, and it just blows your mind, all that plastic and cardboard,” he said.

Canning has made a number of changes to the store’s energy consumption, including restructuring

three fridges into one and doubleglazing the display cabinets. But the biggest contribution to his $400 in monthly electricity savings came from swapping low-watt f luoro bulbs to LED lights.

His advice to other businesses looking to save money and reduce their carbon footprint: “It’s all about the LED lighting.”

Canning acknowledges the seeming contradictions between his passion and his profession. “The vegetarians and the ethicists would say there’s no such thing as ethical meat, and I kind of agree with that.

There’s ethical farming – which is as ethical as it’s going to get, ever – but in the end, the animal has to die.”

Canning sees his work as an opportunity. “I’m facilitating a need for meat while using my position to educate people about ethical farming practices.”

He says he’s fortunate to work in Hawthorn, where people are willing to pay a little extra for ethically farmed meat.

Black dog plagues aged

NEARLY a quarter of aged-care residents suffer clinical depression and half of them are undiagnosed, according to a Deakin University study.

The study has sparked calls by Stonnington aged-care workers for an injection of funding and services.

Professor Marita McCabe, director of Deakin’s Centre for Mental Health and Wellbeing Research, headed the team, working in conjunction with Benetas and Uniting Aged Care.

The study, which involved 250 aged-care residents, found only half of the people suffering depression had been diagnosed and even fewer received appropriate treatment. A clinical assessment of each resident in the study was compared with their diagnosis to find the result. ‘‘This means that many people are leading a fairly miserable existence within the aged-care system, and

that’s not good enough,” Professor McCabe said.

She said the research also found that aged-care residents who had health issues paired with depression died earlier.

“It is time for aged-care staff and management, as well as government, to fulfil their duty of care to the psychological as well as the physical welfare of our elderly.”

Staff and management of Benetas and Uniting Aged Care who assisted in the study were found to be largely unaware of the extent of depression among residents.

Professor McCabe said the research found residents sometimes did not speak up for fear of causing trouble, embarrassment and a tendency to see depression as “a normal part of ageing”.

She said further complications arose when elderly people had Alzheimer’s and were heavily sedated, masking psychological problems.

Katrina Szabo, of UnitingCare’s John Macrae Centre, Toorak, said

the community was unaware of the extent of depression among elderly people and that they could often play a part in reducing it.

“Isolation is the main driver for depression in elderly people,’’ Ms Szabo said. ‘‘As they lose their independence and their friends, family and spouses begin to pass away, ageing can become a very lonely experience.”

Ms Szabo said the only contact many elderly people had was with a carer, but even slight improvement in social interaction could greatly improve a person’s life.

Ms Szabo said Stonnington was making an effort to improve services such as transport and funding for the elderly, but there was much more to be done and volunteers were in constant shortage.

Deakin researchers are working with aged-care agencies to curb the rate of depression by providing better staff training, improving detection and treatment and employing specialist doctors and nurses.

A SPRING IN THEIR STEP The John Macrae Centre, a UnitingCare adult social support service, held its second annual Spring Dance on September 25. More than 120 people who live or work in Stonnington attended the community event, held to raise awareness for issues that face elderly people in Stonnington and the support available through Toorak Uniting Church.

The government-funded centre supports more than 80 disadvantaged and isolated elderly residents in the Stonnington area.

The burglar left through the front door.

PRAHRAN The driver o of a reported stolen vehicle allegedly drove straight at two Stonnington police officers investigating vehicle break-ins in Chomley Street. The officers, patrolling in the Malvern divisional van, responded to a call that five cars had been broken into about 3am on September 25. They saw a man get into a blue Ford wagon. The man then allegedly drove the vehicle straight at their van and they had to swerve to avoid being hit. The Ford, registered OIA 911, is still missing. Anyone with information should contact Crime Stoppers.

Stonnington police are investigating a series of thefts from tradies’ utes. Five utes were broken into – three in Malvern Road and two in Waverley Road – about 3am on September 21. The vehicles were on the street, the nature strip or in private driveways. The thieves forced open the rear of each vehicle and stole valuable power tools. Police urge tradesmen to lock the rear of utes and vans when finishing work, and to engrave equipment with their driver’s licence number.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR ■ COURSE CUTS UNFAIR As a university student, I can somewhat sympathise with the anxiety TAFE students would be feeling in relation to the potential discontinuation of their courses (‘‘Cut fear fuelled by TAFE report’’, RL, September 19).

To have your course cut short without the ability to obtain some form of credit for the years one has already completed is outrageously unfair.

Not to mention that this, together with the raised fees, will just put more of our youths on the streets and will prevent many from acquiring an education and hence, future employment.

Alana Mitchelson / via email ■ NO DISCRIMINATION Gay and lesbian couples in Australia are not discriminated against in any way, shape or form. The Australian Labor government only recently amended 85 pieces of legislation in regard to social security, taxation, superannuation and much more, to

legally recognise gay couples. This was fair and reasonable reform.

However changing the marriage act to also recognise gay couples is one reform the majority of my neighbours and community are opposed to. The majority of people agree that marriage is a special institution between a man and a woman, and the best way to raise children, with a mother and a father.

Those arguing that gay couples are discriminated against ought to see what real discrimination is like, such as [in] nations where homosexuality is still illegal and punishable by death.

Turning back the tide Expansive homes on the banks of the Yarra provide glorious views, but at what cost, asks EDDIE MORTON

I

t provides 70 per cent of Melbourne’s piped water and hydrates one of Australia’s most renowned wine-making regions.

But according to river advocates, the Yarra River is under threat from unsightly developments.

Catherine Santo, founder of the Yarra River Action Alliance, blames a lack of environmental planning controls along the river for inappropriate developments in Stonnington and Boroondara, which she says will set a precedent for further “eyesores”.

“People have cottoned on to the value of the river and the value of their riverside properties,’’ says Santo.‘‘Some of the old lots of land have not changed hands since they were divided as long ago as the 1940s … It is a feeding frenzy for developers.”

While Planning Minister Matthew Guy has suggested an overarching

body to manage developments along the Yarra as part of the state’s planning reforms, Santo isn’t confident the government will deliver.

“Actions speak louder than words, especially in regards to the planning decisions,” Santo says.“It has been left up to local councils to protect their own patch of the river and so far Stonnington has been the only one who has made ground on planning restrictions.”

The river separates a number of Melbourne’s inner municipalities, including the City of Stonnington where, in August, the council passed an amendment to its planning policy, the first of its kind in Melbourne.

Amendment C155 came after a report from urban design consultancy Planisphere recommended planning restrictions along Alexandra Avenue between

Punt Road and Grange Road in the hope of creating “a cohesive boulevard”.

Overlays were applied to the small stretch of river, ensuring that all development was subject to environmental constraints and compatible with the environmental values.

However, as promising as the council’s efforts have been, Santo and Yarra Riverkeeper Association founder Ian Penrose say there is still a long way to go to stop developers from encroaching on the Yarra’s natural beauty.

“There are a number of disturbing developments that were allowed in Stonnington just outside the C155 boundaries, specifically on Orrong Road and Yarradale Road,Toorak,’’ says Penrose.‘‘There is a real fear that these properties will set precedent for future, more obtrusive developments.”

In 2004, Penrose and a handful of like-minded Melburnians founded the Yarra Riverkeeper Association with the aim of safeguarding the river.The group has grown to more than 500 members and Penrose has the official title of ‘‘riverkeeper’’.

Each week he patrols the Yarra’s banks from Collingwood to the river mouth at Port Phillip Bay in the association’s punt.

According to Penrose, a developer was recently forced to rebuild the riverbank after the natural riverbank collapsed during the building process.

“These houses sit only a few hundred metres from Stonnington council’s C155 boundaries. As you can see, they completely eradicate any natural skyline, damage natural habitats and leave no riverbank for others to enjoy.

“I fear that the government

will continue to allow planning applications from independent developers, like these, looking to make a quick buck off their exclusive blocks of land. We must put measures in place to control what people can do in the future.”

The Yarra Riverkeeper Association is calling for amendments such as Stonnington’s C155 to be made mandatory along the length of the Yarra River in municipal Melbourne.They also want building heights restricted to two or three storeys and set well back from the banks.

“I would like to be able to swim in the Yarra one day,” Penrose says.

“It is such a shame because I think Melburnians have become accustomed to thinking of the river as a filthy, no-go zone.Why wouldn’t we fight to protect it so that we can enjoy it, use it and be proud of it?”

Flow on effect Ian Penrose believes saving the river is a matter of protecting social health as well as the health of its natural inhabitants.

“I do not have anything against people building houses, or developers developing. I do, however, have a problem when the banks of Melbourne’s most ancient water source are ruined to make way for unnecessary and unsightly structures,” he says.

Maintaining a connection to nature in the city is one of the most important elements of human mental health, according to Penrose. As a result, the Yarra Riverkeeper Association is calling on local governments to discourage developments that rob people of that increasingly rare slice of greenery.

“People do not make the connection between their state of mind and the environment around them. What they do not realise is that having natural landscapes around you improves your mental health.”

Today, Penrose has taken us out on the Yarra Riverkeepers’ boat to show us a number of Toorak properties, which the group says have compromised the river’s natural landscape.

On the way, it becomes clear how alive with natural wildlife the river really is. Families of ducks patrol riverbanks and birds such as cormorants dive in, chasing small fish below the water’s surface.

“It’s bloody beautiful on the river and very few Melburnians have experienced it,’’ says Penrose. ‘‘However, stormwater pollution, human waste and litter continue to destroy the water quality and many breeds of river wildlife are facing the endangered species list.”

Suddenly, as if someone has changed the backdrop on a movie set, the landscape transforms into lavish, contemporary architecture overshadowing the natural treeline and leaving little evidence of the original riverbank below. It’s a timely insight into how the Yarra could look in the future if development continues unchecked along the river.

ike so many Melburnians, I am crazy about the macaron. While I love the morsels of French deliciousness, I never appreciated how much work goes into making them. Until now, that is. I’m impressed by my first-time efforts, guided by circle patterns under the baking tray.The trays go into the huge oven and we make the ganache before assembling our precious delicacies.

The Verdict Arno, who boasts years of experience as well as a charming accent, is an entertaining and generous teacher. He answers our endless stream of questions during the hands-on session that runs for two hours and costs $100.The good news is, we take home a box full of our creations.

The bad news is, we are advised to leave them in the fridge for two days before tucking in. A difficult task indeed!

ou can smell it in the air, can’t you? That intoxicating fragrance of spring.

It’s no wonder humans have celebrated the season’s arrival since the dawn of time. It’s a reward for surviving the drabness of winter – and it’s been a pretty dismal winter in Melbourne this year. But there’s much to celebrate.

Stonnington’s – and Melbourne’s – horticultural jewel in the crown, the Royal Botanic Gardens, has a host of events planned for its spring open day on Sunday, October 7. The garden’s arborists, Rebecca Barnes and Jim Shugg, will demonstrate their tree-climbing skills and give an insight into how the historic trees are managed.

Lovers of gardens, history and opera are in for a treat.

The Camberwell property Astolat will open this Saturday and Sunday as part of the Australian Open Garden Scheme’s 25th anniversary.

Three gardeners care for the grounds surrounding the 15-room mansion, built between 1884 and 1886.

The property’s name derives from Tennyson’s Idylls of the King. The garden is divided into seven ‘‘rooms’’ spread over almost a hectare.

Paths wind through shaded areas, flowering borders edge sweeping lawns, and large trees – many heritagelisted – dapple the driveway.

The owner, who wishes to remain anonymous, is involved with the Dame Nellie Melba Opera Trust that gives scholarships and performance opportunities to our most promising young opera singers. Some of them will perform at Astolat. Head gardener Michelle Olifent will talk about the garden at 11am, 12.30pm and 2pm.

With most guests coming from interstate and overseas, they also wanted a venue that wasn’t too far from their Hawthorn East home or CBD accommodation. Louise says the most memorable moments of the day were seeing each other for the first time as she was walking down the aisle for their garden ceremony, the dance and the overwhelming sense of excitement and sheer joy of the day.“Doing our first dance that we had been practising for months was really nerve-wracking but it was great to surprise our guests with a choreographed dance, which they weren’t expecting,” she says.

Action Jackson saves the day

HE MAY have just lived the boyhood dream, but Jackson Macrae isn’t getting carried away ahead of one of the busiest months of his life.

Playing for Oakleigh Chargers in last week’s TAC Cup grand final, Jackson, 18, kicked a ‘‘golden point’’ in the final quarter to hand the Chargers the premiership. He won the best-on-ground medal in the process.

Under TAC Cup rules, if scores are tied at the end of regular time in a grand final, the next score ends the game. ‘‘We actually talked about it [golden point] during the week, how there’s no draw in TAC Cup,’’ Macrae says. ‘‘We all had a laugh about it at the time, and then it happened so it was pretty weird. ‘‘I marked it a bit out of my range, so I just tried to get it within my distance and just try and score. It’s all a bit of a blur looking back; I’m just happy it snuck through.’’

The grand final was Macrae’s last at under-age level, with an invitation to this week’s AFL draft combine (formerly the draft camp) the next step in a promising career.

Invitations to the draft combine are extended only to the brightest draft prospects, with the most

talented juniors in the countr y brought together for a series of gruelling physical tests and interviews with coaches and recruiters.

If Macrae is daunted by the combine or the fast-approaching draft, he’s not showing it. ‘‘To test myself against some of the best kids in the country is just really exciting,’’ Macrae says. ‘‘Hopefully that [the draft] will look after itself.

‘‘I can’t really do much performance-wise with my footy now, just control what I can and hopefully test well and interview well and hopefully I get picked up. ‘‘It’s a dream I’ve had since I was a little kid, so any club interstate or in Victoria, no matter what, I’d be happy.’’

Macrae believes his versatility is one of his strongest points, having been used back, forward, and in the midfield throughout the season.

“Playing forward and back has probably helped my development,” Macrae said.

“If they [the AFL] bring in a twosub rule I think versatility is something every club needs.”

Gowers bows out after two seasons at the helm at Old Xavs HAVING finished his second and final year as coach of Old Xaverians, Andy Gowers says he’s leaving the club in a strong position.

Gowers said from day one he wanted to do only two years as coach, and after experiencing the highs and lows of football in the past weeks, he says he’s ticked every box bar one. ‘‘I thought overall it was a good year,’’ Gowers says. ‘‘We were really determined to get a top two position, which we were able to secure three weeks out [from finals] ... that gave us the best opportunity to have a crack at the title.’’

Old Xavs were knocked out at the

preliminary final stage last year, after winning the previous two Victorian Amateur Football Association premier flags, and a change in attitude in the pre-season was at the forefront of Gowers’ mind this season. ‘‘I think the boys were more determined,’’ he says. ‘‘It’s hard to stay mentally hungry when you’ve been successful, but this year I think the disappointment of last year drove a few boys. ‘‘That was one factor, and the other was we had a few new boys that came into the team and really added some depth to our list.’’

Some of those additions included Murphy and Patrick Ambrose, Tom

Carey, and Ben Kennedy, who all added new strengths to an already strong list.

While loath to make excuses for missing a premiership, Gowers lamented a patch in the middle of the season where the Xavs weren’t able to use their running game to the extent they would have liked due to poor ground condition. ‘‘We were playing on really heavy grounds, and I think that took its toll,’’ he says. ‘‘It was just a really wet winter ... and I reckon that made our game style a bit harder to get back to once the weather improved.’’

It will come as no surprise to anyone who’s followed the Xavs this

season that the highlight of the year for Gowers was the come-frombehind win over De La Salle in the preliminary final.

Down by 26 points at threequarter time, Xavs kicked eight goals to one in the final term to book themselves a spot in the grand final. ‘‘We really didn’t look like winning the game for most of it, nearly all of it,’’ Gowers says. ‘‘The boys showed a lot of character with a spot in the grand final up for grabs and they did well to get the result we were after.’’

Xavs ultimately fell short in the grand final last week, going down to reigning premiers Collegians by

seven points. Despite the loss, Gowers says the club is well placed, with five of the club’s seven teams playing in grand finals this season. ‘‘As a club we had a really successful year,’’ he says. ‘‘We weren’t able to get the premierships that we wanted ... so that’s a bitter pill to swallow, but we hope to get back bigger and better next year. ‘‘It’s time to let someone else mould these young men ... there’s a lot more success ahead of them.’’

Gowers coached Old Xaverians to 29 wins in his 41 games in charge.
