Victims flee mock war zone

THE Kinglake Ranges will become a “war zone” where victims flee civil conflict and dodge militia to get to safety.

The Global Frontline Challenge, created by former Australian commando and Kinglake resident Mark Squirrell, will simulate a war to raise money to help people in real-life conflict zones.

Teams of four adults will flee through the hills at night, conquering

physical and mental obstacles similar to those found in war zones, on their

escape to a neighbouring “country”.

Mr Squirrell said participants would be told they are members of a clan involved in an uprising against a corrupt government.

They will be told: “It’s time to flee on foot across the border with your family and your most valued possessions. Go!’’ “It will be the ultimate test of mental strength and perseverance because, unlike a traditional outdoor adventure challenge, the entrants won’t have any forewarning about what’s coming around the corner.”

Mr Squirrell, who spent 10 years as a humanitarian aid worker in places such as Somalia, Gaza and Afghanistan, used his experience in helping people forced to flee their homelands as the basis for the event.

“It will ensure that competitors have a lifelike experience but also a unique insight into the perils of a combat zone,” he said.

The May 11 event will raise money for Access Aid International, which helps people in global hotspots.

Business analyst Ben Ryder wants to do for bocce what the film Crackerjack did for lawn bowls – get young people involved. Mr Ryder (pictured) is a weekend devotee of the game. Like the Crackerjack character Jack Simpson, played by Mick Molloy, Mr Ryder wants younger people to embrace bocce. As a child he joined his parents in the French version, called boules, in the backyard and became enchanted when he saw bocce being played at Bundoora’s Norris Bank Reserve.

“There were all these old Italians playing, enjoying themselves,” he says.

“I thought we should expand this in the community; it is a social rather than competitive game.” His wife is Italian, and Greek, Macedonian and Italian neighbours are keen for a bocce rink in Satin Park in Bundoora’s Windmill Street. They have petitioned Whittlesea council, which is considering it.

Zone plan a game changer

NEW residential zones which will change development possibilities for land were revealed to the nation’s developers last week.

Residential zones one, two and three will be replaced by a neighbourhood residential zone, residential growth zone, and general residential zone.

Local governments have 12 months to nominate land for those zones before the new zoning automatically kicks in The neighbourhood zone limits building heights to eight metres and is intended to protect neighbourhood character.

The general residential zone has a nine-metre discretionary height limit and planning documents show it encourages development that maintains neighbourhood character.

Residential growth zone has a default variable height limit of 13 metres.

Planning Minister Matthew Guy announced the new zones at an annual conference of the Urban Development Institute of Australia, saying the plan was ‘‘unashamedly one that will seek built form change’’.

Mr Guy used his speech to announce a new land supply target of 60,000 housing lots within Melbourne’s Urban Growth Boundary over the next two years, up from 50,000 lots previously stated.

Whittlesea council’s manager of established areas planning, Maria Cooke, said residents could still comment on the council’s draft housing strategy which sets out new residential zones in the established suburbs of Lalor, Thomastown, Epping, Mill Park, Bundoora, South Morang and Whittlesea township.

Centre to drive green future

BY SUE HEWITT RMIT’S $10 million “Green Engines Research� facility in Bundoora is a first for the Asia-Pacific region, with local and overseas automotive industries lining up to be involved in research projects.

The centre, which opened today, will research new vehicle engines and converting existing engines to alternative fuels.

Professor Aleksandar Subic, Dean of Engineering and head of the school of aerospace, mechanical and manufacturing engineering, said the research would tackle the challenges faced by the automotive industry in a “carbon-constrained economy�. “The facility is not about developing alternative fuels, it is about developing new engines or improving existing engines to make them sustainable [using alternative fuels],� he said.

FAT and fed up, Carmelo Failla started a program that changed more than his appearance – his whole life is unrecognisable.

The Mernda man shed 35 kilograms and a high-pressure job that was keeping him away from his wife, Rebecca, and their three children.

The couple joined the Premier’s Active Families Challenge – in which families exercise for 30 minutes daily for 30 days – three years ago.

It kick-started a new life. Mr Failla quit his IT project manager job, studied fitness and is now a personal trainer. He is 46 but his biological age is now 32.

“I don’t recognise me or my life. I am very positive and happy now,” he said. “Before I started I had hurt my back picking up my daughter and struggled to walk around the corner.

Now, in the past year, I have run the equivalent of a half marathon [21.1 kilometres] every Sunday with the

goal of running a full marathon [42.2 kilometres] in October.”

Mr Failla dropped from 105 to 70 kilograms and people said he was too skinny, so he “beefed up” by putting on five kilograms of muscle.

Mrs Failla, 38, lost 13 kilograms during the first challenge and has since cycled 200 kilometres in the Ride to Conquer Cancer event.

“We were fat and lazy and we had three kids growing up learning our bad habits and decided enough is enough,” she said.

“We used to just sit and do nothing. Now the whole family does something active. On Sundays Carmelo runs to St Andrews and I drive the kids there, we take the kids to a park, then I ride my bike home and Carmelo drives the kids back.

“When we started, Carmelo was so large that he was a borderline diabetic; it was a wake-up call.”

The family will take up the 2013 challenge that runs until April 14.

Trio charged over crimes

Family sheds kilos to gain life

A LALOR man faces 59 charges for an alleged crime spree, which includes the theft of a $289,000 Porsche and four police pursuits.

Police allege Steve Kaxos, 23, of Lalor, stole the Porsche 911 from a St Kilda Road apartment car park on February 7 with his Thomastown girlfriend, Charmaine Riley, 25.

Nathan Knight, 21, of Lalor also faces charges relating to the theft of the sports car.

During a police pursuit on February 11, officers were chasing a stolen vehicle through Bundoora allegedly driven

by Kaxos with Riley in the passenger seat. In an alleged pursuit six days later, Kaxos was arrested by police in Mill Park following a chase involving the aerial wing and the dog squad.

Kaxos has been remanded in custody to face a committal mention at the Melbourne Magistrates Court on May 13. Knight and Riley have been bailed and will face court on April 15 and May 13 respectively.

As patron of Zoos Victoria, Mr Chernov helped raise $16,000 to save 20 species from extinction, 16 of them in Victoria. What should have taken 15 minutes took an hour as the fire came in waves blocking their path. They found bodies in the burnt out vehicles which were the emergency call-outs.

More heart-wrenching was when Klammer’s personal mobile started ringing. ‘‘There were mums begging us. They kept pleading, ‘forget me, just save my children’.’’ ‘‘There was nothing we could do.’’ In the aftermath Klammer and her family stayed in Kinglake, at one stage living for 15 months in a caravan: two adults and three children. ‘‘It is our community; we chose to stay,’’ she says.

Klammer, who has been a SES volunteer since 1994, says the Kinglake unit is stronger since the fires, despite half of the then 18 members moving away because they had lost property.

It now has 28 members, including three juniors who Klammer says are the future.

In their down time, Klammer, 46, drives a courtesy bus for an RSL club, and Derwent, 55, is a small businessman and Murrindindi Shire councillor.

Derwent loves helping people, but it’s his sense of duty that keeps him coming back: ‘‘somebody’s got to do it’’. I

The emergencies are diverse. It’s not just pulling tarpaulins over storm damaged houses and sand-bagging in flash floods, helping in industrial accidents and searching the bush for missing people.

The SES crews often cut open smashed vehicles to rescue the living and recover the dead.

Derwent says ‘‘you try not to remember the nasty ones. We all have a slightly different way of dealing with it’’.

But Klammer recalls a quadruple fatality where two small children lost their lives in a two-car collision on the Melba Highway near Dixons Creek in 2011. ‘‘It is sadder when innocent people lose their lives and their families are left behind.’’

On Black Saturday, many of the Kinglake SES members were fund-raising ‘‘off the mountain’’ in Whittlesea. Their pagers started going off in response to road crashes as people fled Kinglake on the Whittlesea-Yea Road, and the volunteers talked their way around roadblocks and drove back up the mountain.

hen there is an emergency call-out in the middle of the night, the head of one local rescue team doesn’t have to worry about waking her deputy – he’s right beside her.

Leanne Klammer is the Kinglake State Emergency Service controller, her deputy controller and partner is Andrew Derwent, and three of her unit members are her children.

Daughter Louise, now 20, joined as a junior and is now a team leader, son Alex, 18, is an operational member and Klammer’s youngest Nicholas, couldn’t wait to turn 16 to become a junior member. Her eldest, Martin, now 25, was a junior member but school demands at the time meant he had to give it up.

If the couple get an emergency call, they have eight minutes to hit the road; including four minutes to acknowledge the call and another four minutes to organise a crew.

Often Klammer is still wearing pyjamas under her orange SES overalls, but they have a near perfect score meeting the time for call-outs.

Back to his roots Vasili Kanidiadis harvests the wealth of the northern suburbs in his new TV series. By Sue Hewitt

A

n elderly man with a shy smile produces a plump, home-grown tomato and shows it to Vasili Kanidiadis, the cult television gardener. It’s a “bewdy” and the man who fronts TV’s Vasili’s Garden, tells him so. ‘‘He’s not saying, ‘see my standard roses’, he is telling me to look at his tomato, so big and fresh,” says Kanidiadis. ‘‘This man says he has grown this from seeds that he brought into the country in his underwear when he migrated [decades ago]. There is pride in what is simple; and I hear many similar stories.’’

Kanidiadis, the son of Greek migrants, is the knockabout bloke who digs into Melbourne’s suburbs to reveal the rich multicultural love of home-grown food.

The northern suburbs are a smorgasbord of edible gardens on which Kanidiadis feasts while producing his television show. The show is as homegrown as the produce and the gardeners, which may explain his recent parting with SBS for a return to his roots in community television.

Vasili’s Garden started at community television station Channel 31 in 2003 and was lured to SBS in 2007, but last week returned to Channel 31, renamed Vasili’s Garden to Kitchen.

Kanidiadis wants to keep the eclectic, home-movie style he created at the start, visiting ordinary people in the veggie patch, sharing the spoils and inviting them to dance as he plays the accordion. It’s a fun celebration of multiculturalism, with a smiling declaration of “maresi!” (“I like it!” in Greek) to the camera when Kanidiadis samples a great piece of fruit or learns a technique to plant the ‘‘old way’’.

His show’s concept of sharing the gardening traditions brought from European villages by postwar migrants has achieved cult status – at its peak attracting hundreds of thousands of viewers a week – but it has not made him rich. He says each program costs him personally. ‘‘It’s been 10 years and I am out of pocket,” he says.

However, Kanidiadis is richer in wisdom. ‘‘My stomping ground is backyard gardens in Thomastown, Lalor, Epping and other northern suburbs where the bulk of my shows are filmed,” he says. ‘‘There is a breed of migrant who lives there who are extroverts, passionate about life and love gardening.

They don’t have a deep-pocket kind of wealth; they have a wealth of knowledge and I harvest it.”

Kanidiadis was slow to harvest his own family’s gardening knowledge. Born in Coburg and moving to Keilor Park at the age of six, he grew up with the traditional Greek veggie patch that his parents tended without chemical fertilisers or pesticides. They shared the home-cooked produce around a table with extended family. ‘‘As a teenager I grew up in an environment where we had the garden and understood the benefits of growing your own fruit and vegetables,” he says.

After they moved to Keilor Park, his father demolished the old family home in Coburg to create a veggie patch there, and took his schoolboy son there daily to harvest ripe produce or sit under a lemon tree and feast on the pickings.

As Kanidiadis grew up, he studied engineering and then classical piano, before being pulled back to his roots and learning horticulture. He opened a nursery in 1993 in Coburg, the namesake of the original TV program Vasili’s Garden, and it drew a following. His quirky nature, friendly advice and flashing smile earned him an invitation to do a talkback gardening show in Greek for a multicultural radio station for seven years in the 1990s.

Then came the television program, and this is where Kanidiadis embraced the suburban migrants of the north as the talent for his cameras. ‘‘The rich ones went to the other side [of the city] but here [in the northern suburbs] gardening is a labour of love.”

Perhaps born of financial necessity, the postwar migrants of the north continued centuries-old traditions and practices imported from their family farms in Europe, he says. They also brought with them a friendly competitive streak. ‘‘I have seen a 1.3-kilogram tomato, a 1.6-kilogram cucumber that is four times the size of a normal continental cucumber and a 2.6-metre long gourd,” he says. ‘‘But size doesn’t really matter; it comes back to growing, eating and cooking the produce.’’

For Kanidiadis it also comes back to keeping traditions alive and teaching a new generation the

old methods. These skills will be lost unless they are embraced by the young, he warns. He suggests schools should include in their curriculum healthy lifestyle programs that include gardening, eating from the backyard and skills such as collecting, preserving and propagating seeds, fruit and vegetables and gardening the old way, without chemicals.

He stresses it is not just the eating of the produce that keeps people healthy, it is the actual gardening. ‘‘There’s no age limit for gardening, they can be very young or like a man I met in Ballarat who was in his late 70s who took me up to his hillside garden and I struggled to keep up with him,” Kanidiadis says.

He says the future of preserving these priceless traditions lies with the children of postwar migrants returning to their roots, and their grandchildren and great-grandchildren discovering them. ‘‘The younger generation have grown up with vegetables in a plastic bag that they heat in a microwave, but as individuals we can work to change that,” he says.

My generation got sick of gardening, but now they are reconnecting to it, sometimes because their parents have passed away or their parents are too old to do it.”

Kanidiadis says his own four children grew up with a remote control in their hands rather than a rake, but now take an interest in gardening.

In fact he has drafted the entire family to help out on his new Channel 31 program. His wife, Lisa, an elite athlete, presents a segment on healthy bodies and his eldest daughter Eleni, 17, presents a segment on healthy habits. Behind the scenes son Louis, 16, is the first cameraman and editor; daughter Anna, 14, is second camera person; and his youngest, Julia, 13, does the graphics and credits for the show. ‘‘It really is a family affair,’’ he says.I

Nathan Gardiner is growing into cricket. By Daniel Paproth

ictoria fell frustratingly short of making the final of the Imparja Cup in the Northern Territory but Nathan Gardiner can rest assured he did all he could.

In what proved to be Victoria’s last match of the Twenty20 tournament, against South Australia, the Whittlesea batsman opened and top-scored with 51 from 37 balls. Victoria made 8/192 and went on to win the match, but a paltry run rate meant it missed out on the final.

Gardiner (pictured) scored the sixth-most runs of any player in the tournament, which pitted each state’s best indigenous players against each other in Alice Springs in late February.

His 146 runs, including a half-century in the last match and 41 against Western Australia, were crucial for the Victorian team, known as Noogal Toengorrt Tani.

Born in Preston, Gardiner is a member of the Wurundjeri people and says he enjoyed the tournament despite not making the final. ‘‘We haven’t won a title, we equalled our

best from last year,’’ Gardiner says. ‘‘But it was a good experience, all the boys had a good tournament and we gelled well together.’’

Gardiner was recognised for his bumper tournament with selection in the Black Caps; the team of the tournament. He was also recruited to Cricket Australia’s under-23 development squad. ‘‘I had a lot of confidence going into the Imparja Cup,” Gardiner says. ‘‘I’d made a few starts before the tournament so I was pretty confident I could make a few runs. ‘‘Twenty20 cricket is a new format for me really, I haven’t played a lot of it, you’re pretty much attacking from ball one. ‘‘It was good to play with all the people who have come from different backgrounds and communities and it’s just a really good tournament I think.’’

Away from national tournaments Gardiner plays with Whittlesea Cricket Club’s first XI in the Diamond Valley Cricket Association, where there wasn’t much to cheer about in 2012-13.

‘‘Twenty20 cricket is a new format for me really, I haven’t played a lot of it” Playing in the Money Shield, Whittlesea lost every game, finishing last on just three points.

Gardiner was one of the few shining lights with 296 runs at an average of 29.6, with a best score of 110 and a half-century.

“It was a pretty tough season, not many numbers around the club,” says Gardiner. But it may all be about to turn around for him, with a potential move to Premier Cricket on the cards. His captain in the Imparja Cup, Ben Abbatangelo, plays for Northcote. ‘‘I’ve been approached by a few people to go and play district cricket,” he says. “I’m thinking about it.’’ I

atholic schools are discovering what is most precious as part of their Catholic Education Week activities.

The archdiocese of Melbourne has run Catholic Education Week for 16 years, and this year’s theme of “entrusted with something precious” has been interpreted and applied not just to education week, but to the general curriculum.

Parade College in Bundoora is one of the oldest and largest Christian Brothers schools in Australia, with 142 years of Catholic education in the tradition of Edmund Rice, a Roman Catholic missionary and founder of the Congregation of Christian Brothers.

Parade’s ministry and religious education director, Rachel Roche, said the c ollege would focus on world religions, legacy and tradition for Catholic Education Week.

“We are proud of and focus on tradition and a legacy that we need to uphold,” Roche says. “As part of our religious education classes

throughout the year, we focus on the history of the college.

“One of our mottos is ‘hold fast to your traditions’ and this is something that is part of the school journey, or school life.”

“We have a Christian Brothers cemetery here at the school, which is still in use, so when a Christian Brother dies, even if he hasn’t worked at the school, he is buried in the cemetery.

“We have a newly established indigenous garden.

“We would then look at what are the precious traditions of the Christian religion or the Hindu or Muslim religions.”

Ladies’ College for the whole school year.

Learning and teaching deputy principal Stephanie Evans says gratitude has been incorporated into the theme.

The students have written prayers on leaves and they have been placed on a tree of gratitude.

“It’s about being grateful about what you’ve got and those gifts that we have, and what we believe in,” says Evans.

“The things the students wrote on the tree had a lot to do with their relationships, but it came through that they were grateful for the person that they were, the environment they were in, and the opportunities they have.

“The notion of the gift that we’ve got and how can we use those – that’s what being entrusted with it really is, and that’s what grows, hence the tree.”

Parents are also introduced to the theme through an information evening.

“The theme then extends to the school being entrusted with their daughters, which is something precious to them,” Evans says.

ith technology increasing in every part of our lives, religious schools are striving to be more interactive and immersive by integrating iPads, tablets, apps and e-books into classrooms.

Students have easy access to technology, which allows them to grasp religion and religious history with immediate responses and resources online.

Rachel Roche, director of ministry and religious education at Parade College in Bundoora, says a popular app called Glo Bible offers interactive maps, videos and images.

“They can read a passage, go to the pictures and see the construction of the temple that might be mentioned, like a virtual tour,” she says. “They can see where events in the Bible have occurred and the geography of what is now Israel or Palestine at that time.”

Not only have apps and e-books replaced hard copies of the Bible in many schools,

the newly revised standard version of the Bible has an app that can search for words to find passages or gospel stories on particular subjects, such as community or friendship.

The Good News Bible app is used in classrooms, as it contains maps, timelines and details about key people.

This is the second year that students have been using iPads and the Good News Bible app as part of their religious education classes at Catholic Ladies’ College in Eltham, says deputy principal Stephanie Evans.

“It’s contemporary about the notion of a global community, and the Good News Bible app is used for reflections,” she says.

This global classroom concept is also becoming a way for students to learn about other religions with quick and easy access to the internet and video conferencing services, such as Skype.

Sound investment Desktop speakers get a shake-up. By Rod Easdown

The thing about the X300A is that it’s serious. Try lifting one. Yep, that’s 7.5 kilograms right there. And just in case you’re wondering, nope, serious ain’t cheap.

The 13-centimetre mid/bass driver is obvious but nestled inside it is a separate 2.5-centimetre tweeter. And here’s what makes these serious speakers – both the tweeter and the mid/bass get their own dedicated amplifier hidden away inside the cabinet.

Most desktop speaker systems get a simple amplifier driving everything, usually a class-D digital unit, but each X300A has two classA/B amps tuned specifically to the mid/bass or tweeter it is driving. This means the drivers are always getting the right amount of power, and good power means sweet sound.

But having the amplifiers inside the speakers brings another huge plus for a desktop system; you don’t need an external amplifier.

’m about the only person I know with decent computer sound. It’s nice to have good music while you’re working, and I know how to rig it up. So I don’t have to put up with the itsy-bitsy speakers inside the computer itself – horrible things that have the timbre of old tuna cans. Nor do I have one of those little speaker systems they sell in electronics shops, a step up but usually not much of one. Even the ones with a separate low-range woofer are usually pretty awful.

And they vary so markedly. I’ve heard $50 ones that sound OK and $200 ones that are dreadful. Most won’t go loud enough; some will but distort the music horribly.

Me, I bought a couple of proper speakers and a special cable to connect the computer’s 3.5mm audio output to the RCA plugs of my amplifier and … uh-oh, I think I’ve lost you.

Come back, there’s an easy way now. British speaker maker KEF has just unveiled it – the X300A is a highly compact speaker that won’t take up too much space on your desk, with a

be amazed by how much better everything sounds.

OK, so they cost $1345 a pair. Justify that with the knowledge that you won’t need to spend another cent for seriously good audio.

t’s slightly worrying that the best TV the ABC has produced this year has been cheaply made documentaries. I’d rather be immersed in a satisfying fictional world.

But here is Annabel Crabb, offering a rather jolly tour of our capital’s underbelly.

Canberra is espionage heartland, we’re told, with one in 50 of its inhabitants somehow connected to the spy business.

Dressed as a 1940s lady detective, Crabb pores over sleazy documents implicating Robert Menzies and Harold Holt in debauchery, traces the rise of the ALP’s “faceless men” and considers a scandal that helped topple the Whitlam government. As a refresher on Canberra’s frequently sordid history, this is entertaining, but more controversial content would have been welcome.

I

t’s rare to find a 50-year-old thriller whose peaks have not been blunted by overfamiliarity. Hitchcock’s North By Northwest – revived this week in sparkling high definition by the Astor – is one such beast. When revisiting the classics, we usually feel an obligation to make allowances, in terms of pace, stunts and spectacle. It’s tempting to say no such allowances are needed here. Even by modern standards, it’s a cracking tale and superb entertainment. The themes of shifting realities and twisting identities almost seem to pre-empt latter-day cerebral thrillers such as Christopher Nolan’s Memento and Inception. That said, some slack must be cut. Cary Grant is, frankly, a bit rubbish. His charisma ultimately wins over the viewer but it’s tempting to imagine how much better the film would have been with someone who could, well, act. (There’s an unintentionally hilarious scene in which James Mason chides Grant’s character for being a terrible actor.) Instead, the screen is stolen by Eva Marie Saint, who makes something bold and captivating out of a potentially slender role.

rtists do like to make a mess. This “opera in paint” blends dance, painting, music and film in a reinvention of a 2008 production where a troubled artist escapes into a world of imagination.

He is greeted there by a tsunami of light, music and movement and splattered by colours of every shade. TRYBE is the work of Anthony Breslin, a Melbournebased Australian painter, performer, poet and director who, unsurprisingly, is famed for inventive, Jackson Pollock-esque work that tends towards the surrealistic.

T

he debut album from Melbourne’s own ska sensation is exactly the sort of late-night party album you’d expect, given their energetic live shows. Its approach to the genre is wideranging – taking in ska’s Jamaican roots and a looser, fruitier take on the two-tone sound.

Dean Went to Mexico recalls Madness’ Night Boat to Cairo, trumpets blaring a lethargic salute on the banks of the Nile – or the banks of the Rio Bravo, in this case. Elsewhere, Learn to Love Again fuses a ska shuffle to a Burt Bacharach-style tune, slinky vocals sliding a melody for which Dionne Warwick would have hiked to San Jose.

It’s all rather jolly, if familiar. The album kicks off with a tequila-fuelled take on the Get Smart theme: a ragged, wordless and sweaty tune destined to fill dance floors. The retro trappings stay in place for Lygon Street Meltdown, a Batman-infused tale of gangsters and shoot-outs. It’s here that the album gets

closest to a sense of place and purpose, rather than snatching wildly at influences and genre tropes.

Certainly there’s nothing particularly new here. The album is largely missing the socio-political impetus that shaped the best ska.

There’s no Ghost Town or Simmer Down. In that sense, the record is a missed opportunity – it isn’t hard to imagine a Melbourne ska album fruitfully engaging with our city’s injustices and inequalities. As it is, this is an entertaining tour through a much-loved genre. There’s plenty here to move your feet, if not your conscience.

Micro magic Small cars are making big money, with Rod Easdown

U

nless automotive safety standards plummet we’ll never see another microcar era. Which means that pristine examples of these thoroughly weird cars have become surprisingly valuable.In America a collection of 200 was put to auction recently and fetched $7.8 million. Or on average $39,000 each.

They mostly hail from Europe and date from the years following the Second World War when both steel and money were in short supply. At the same time armaments manufacturers were looking to get into other products.

Saab, for example, made war planes and when business stopped it got a team together – only two members of which had a driver’s licence – to develop a car. But it was Messerschmitt, also a giant aircraft manufacturer, that embraced microcars essentially by putting fighter plane cockpits on wheels.

It started with one-seaters and, finally

throwing caution to the wind, it made a two-seater. The catch was that the passenger sat behind the driver with legs either side of the driver’s seat. German school children used to sing rhymes about how dangerous they were in collisions. Still, they were faster than bicycles and you didn’t get wet when it rained. Well, not very wet at least. But they broke down a lot.

Australia had a few microcars of its own.

Sydney car dealer Bill Buckle imported German Goggomobils and developed an exclusive convertible model, the Dart. It had a fibreglass body, no doors and no roof.

Not even a folding one. If you ever see a Goggomobil try not to snigger, one of these auctioned for $127,000.

Adelaide washing machine manufacturer Harold Lightburn unveiled another fibreglass creation in the 1950s called the Zeta. It was powered by a motorcycle engine and, despite looking like a hatchback, had no hatch – you had to pull

the seats out to access the cargo area. It was certainly the ugliest car ever made here and a popular story, probably apocryphal, was that when manufacture was finally abandoned the body dies were sold to a company making dog houses.

The smallest car in the auction, possibly the smallest car ever, was the single-seat Peel P50 made famous by Jeremy Clarkson when he drove one into an elevator and through the BBC offices from a program planning meeting. He didn’t get out of it once. The Peel had no reverse gear; to go backwards you had to get out and lift it around through 180 degrees. But then it weighed just 58 kilograms and Peel had a publicity picture of a smiling woman doing just this.

A Peel fetched $11,500 at the auction.

BMW’s Isetta, designed by an Italian refrigerator manufacturer, is probably the most famous microcar. One entered through the single door that was also the car’s front.
