Protesters miss bus before rally CAMPAIGNERS staging a protest this week at Parliament House over bus cuts face a telling hurdle – some can’t make it because there are no longer buses to transport them.

The rally at Parliament is expected to attract up to 100 protesters, but others can’t make it, says campaigner Helen Said. The group wants to meet Transport Minister Terry Mulder after the protest at

1pm on Thursday but he has so far declined. Ms Said, of the Bring Back the Buses Action Group, said it was ironic that cuts to buses in the north would prevent people from protesting because the 15-minute walk to the nearest public transport was too much for the elderly or disabled. ‘‘We are demanding that the state government reinstate buses, including the 563 and 571 bus services in

Epping, Mill Park and Bundoora, the 561 bus stops in the East Reservoir housing estate and Westfield Plenty Valley services,’’ she said. ‘‘We also call for a moratorium on the removal of the 509 bus service in Brunswick.’’ She said the group had support from Darebin Progress Association and bus campaigners from Moreland.

Green wedge heritage threat

THE Opposition has warned that Whittlesea could lose one of its historic green wedge farming properties — expected to fetch more than $5 million at auction — to developers.

The 124-hectare throughbred horse stud, Mornmoot, which will be sold next month for the third time in just over a century, is being touted for its housing development potential.

Agents Pat Rice & Hawkins said in a prepared statement that the property was located in a ‘‘future residential development zone’’ and had residential estates within a kilometre of its boundary.

Opposition planning spokesman Brian Tee said the state government was expanding its urban growth boundaries into green wedges and he was ‘‘very concerned’’ Mornmoot would become a housing estate. ‘‘This is part of Victoria’s heritage and it would be a tragedy if it was carved up for housing,’’ Mr Tee said. ‘‘Once housing is in place and

He said the government’s next biennial review of urban growth boundaries was due in November, following its announcement in June of six new suburbs on Melbourne’s fringe, including Lockerbie and Lockerbie North, which take in parts of the City of Whittlesea.

It was home to the champion Victorian racehorse and stallion, Century, in the 1970s and 1980s.

The homestead was built by Russell Chirnside about 1900, and was later owned by Neville Young of Melbourne’s Young and Jackson Hotel and David Leighton of the Leighton Group.

At the moment I have nearly finished my certificate in breastfeeding education to become a qualified breastfeeding counsellor and help other mums.

Whittlesea City Council is one of the councils around Victoria trialling a breastfeeding drop-in centre as a part of a Victorian government research project to improve breastfeeding rates.

The government is spending more than $1 million on the three-year trial, which involves 10 councils, including three that will set up the drop-in breastfeeding centres.

The World Health Organisation recommends that babies be exclusively breastfed from immediately after birth until six months of age, then for breastfeeding to continue, with the

The Diamond Valley group of the Australian Breastfeeding Association is working closely with Whittlesea council’s maternal and child health nurses to implement the breastfeeding drop-in centre at the Mernda Village Community Activity Centre.

Peer support is paramount to a mother achieving her breastfeeding goals. The government project is about finding the best ways to provide breastfeeding mothers with this support. Volunteers from the ABA will form an important part of providing this peer support for the mothers attending the drop-in centre.

In addition to the breastfeeding drop-in centre, the Diamond Valley group offers local support get-togethers at the Laurimar Community Centre on the third Wednesday of the month, from 10am–noon. ■

Sharpshooter bags a medal

FAR from the Scottish Highlands, Thomastown resident Riste Butrakoski is a bagpipe master.

He plays haunting folk songs on the traditional Macedonian bagpipes, known as the gajda, made from lamb skin with a chantra flute-like part for the melody. In 1970, a new life beckoned in Australia, and Mr Butrakoski and his bagpipes migrated.

The 68-year-old shared his passion at Macedonian Independence Day celebrations at Thomastown Library last week, organised by the Spectrum Migrant Resource Centre. Spokeswoman Jagoda Koteska said the City of Whittlesea has one of the highest concentrations of Macedonian-born migrants, being home to about 10,000 of the 40,000 in Australia.

“Most Macedonians arrived in Australia after World War II, with limited English and sometimes lacking literacy skills in their native language,’’ she said. ‘‘The Independence Day celebration is an important occasion for them to share their wealth of knowledge about a different time and place while feeling welcomed and appreciated.’’

She said the Macedonian pipes were more melodious and produced gentler sounds than Scottish pipes which produce much higher notes. ‘‘When Macedonians were leaving their homeland to come to Australia

they were farewelled by bagpipe music. Sadly, the tradition in Australia is dying out as most of the players are older than 60 and there are only a handful left.’’

FORMER Northern Hospital nurse Natalie Smith returns home this week after being the first Australian to win a medal at the London Paralympics.

Ms Smith, in her first Paralympics, won bronze in the women’s 10-metre air rifle, behind Germany and China, at the Royal Artillery Barracks.

The 37-year-old, who now lives in Hidden Valley outside Wallan, said the win was ‘‘very surreal’’ and she kept thinking her medal ‘‘is going to disappear’’. She was surprised to win bronze ahead of a Korean shooter. ‘‘I thought I’d dropped down so far, I just had to hope and pray," she said. ‘‘I thought I’d lost it the shot before, so to actually see my name up there was absolutely amazing’’.

Smith became paraplegic in a hiking accident three years ago and began shooting in 2010, progressing rapidly.

Her mother Juanita Lutz said the medal was a tribute to both her grandfathers. Norm Lutz had been ready to represent Australia as a shooter in the 1956 Olympics when he had a heart attack and had to withdraw, while her other grandfather, John Edwards, taught shooting at the Royal Artillery Barracks in the 1940s. ‘‘We’re all so proud of her; she wanted to make it on to the podium, no matter what,’’ Mrs Lutz said.

BY SUE HEWITT sue.hewitt@fairfaxmedia.com.au WHITTLESEA council officers are investigating claims a ‘‘vicious dog’’ savaged a pet in South Morang. But they have dismissed claims the alleged attack involved a pit bull terrier, a restricted breed in Victoria.

The dog was identified as an American Staffordshire terrier cross, which is similar to a pit bull in appearance.

A South Morang mother of three claimed a large dog ripped into her small terrier cross in her driveway. ‘‘My nine-year-old son had our pet on a lead but let go in fear as the other dog attacked,’’ she said. ‘‘My youngest son owns our pet and he ran over to try to separate the fighting dogs. He could have been hurt. ‘‘Our dog was seriously hurt, his whole neck was torn open and we are very lucky to still have him.’’

The mother, who did not want to be named, said the neighbours had paid $900 of the more than $1000 vet bill but ‘‘this is about more than money’’.

She said the attack happened on August 6 but she did not make a formal complaint until August 15 because she said the owners of the other dog had promised to muzzle it and keep it inside. She contacted the council when the animal almost escaped again. ‘‘Now they are denying their dog attacked our pet,’’ she said.

Wayne Bullock, the local laws manager, confirmed the council was investigating the complaint. ‘‘The dog was reported to council as a pit bull but has since been identified as an American Staffordshire terrier cross,’’ he said. ‘‘The dog is a crossbreed and therefore not a restricted breed. However, the dog is not registered, which is part of the offence that is being investigated.’’

Satisfaction achieved The City of Whittlesea has beaten the state average in the Local Government Community Satisfaction Survey in several areas. It scored 66 per cent overall, against a state average of 60 per cent, and 74 per cent for customer service, 3 per cent above the average.

Science in her blood A bout with leukaemia altered Kylie Mason’s career path. By Linley Wilkie

‘I really wanted to ... make a difference, and medicine was a way I could do that’ “It can be a real positive and you can take the experiences that cancer gives you and build on that to make a really positive difference in life.”

Living by that philosophy, Mason had been awarded numerous accolades, including the 1995 Victorian Young Achiever of the Year award and the Premier’s Award for Public Health and Medical Research in 2009.

The mother of two will use the $20,000 fellowship to employ a research assistant (“It doubles the amount of work I can do because it’s an extra pair of hands”) and to travel to an international conference, which will allow her to collaborate and set up

meetings with colleagues overseas. “While you can do that over the phone or on the internet, it’s never as effective as meeting people face-to-face.”

Mason says the award also empowers women in science. “It gives you acknowledgment that your work is worthwhile and confidence in the fact that your work has been recognised by your peers at a high level.”

So was Mason’s career path born out of her cancer battle or destiny? “Leukaemia is such an intrinsic part of my life that I can’t just take that away.

“Before I had leukaemia I wanted to be a coroner and was always interested in medical science, but my experience as a teenager meant I was in hospital a lot of the time, spending a lot of time with doctors and nurses as my role models,” she says. “I found that through that experience I really wanted to come back and make a difference, and medicine was a way I could do that.” ■

ylie Mason has dedicated most of her life to science and was recently rewarded once more for her groundbreaking efforts. The Bundoora doctor received the L’Oreal For Women in Science Fellowship for her research into treatment for cancers of the blood.

Mason works at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research and the Royal Melbourne Hospital, developing and testing new drugs for cancer treatment, and taking the tests through to human trials.

She appreciates what her patients are going through, having been diagnosed with leukaemia when she was 15.

“I have a certain empathy with my patients, having been there and done that,” she says. “It’s important to understand that every journey is different and the cancer experience is different, but there are some shared similarities.”

Mason hopes her own story can in some way inspire patients. “It doesn’t stop you doing anything you want to do,” she says.

grieving Fran Cusworth meets families who have loved – and lost – their babies before they had a chance to get to know them

T

hey’re little people, sometimes small enough to fit on a father’s hand. But these are not little deaths. The grief that surrounds the death of a baby in pregnancy, birth or in the fragile early days of life can be seismic.

It can break up marriages, shape a family’s dynamics forever and it lasts a lifetime.

Renee Fallon spent four years doing IVF before she became pregnant with Bethany. But 19 weeks into the pregnancy, after a wisdom tooth infection, Renee’s membranes ruptured and contractions began. Bethany was born alive, but survived for little more than an hour.

Renee and her husband Paul held a funeral, inviting around 40 people, and then a party a year later, with a jumping castle, to remember Bethany.

Three years on, now with a healthy two-year-old daughter and a two-month-old son, they still mark Bethany’s birthday with a cake, and Renee is the Victorian organiser of Pregnancy Loss Australia.

While they’ve been surrounded by supportive friends and family, the Fallons say there are those who don’t understand the grief for a baby born early, who seem embarrassed by it. ‘‘We had a few friends who declined to come to the funeral. They said it just wasn’t their thing,’’ Paul says. ‘‘You drift away from those people.’’

On Sunday, September 16, Pregnancy Loss Australia will hold its annual memorial walkathon in Doncaster, releasing balloons to represent the lives cut short.

Once, such things weren’t talked about at all.

Stillborn babies were whisked away from mothers

before they could even hold them and buried in a communal grave. Out of sight, out of mind, it was believed. But older women say they never forget the loss, or the way they were treated during this era. ‘‘I never got to hold the baby,’’ says 66-year-old Lynne Vago, from North Melbourne, whose fullterm baby, Alina-Jane, died at just 30 hours from a heart defect present at birth. ‘‘I was sent home with a sleeping tablet and a prescription to dry up the milk. ‘‘Back when it happened, it was very bad form to talk about it. You kept a stiff upper lip, or you might make somebody feel bad. ‘‘I got home and thought, ‘How could we have left the hospital without the baby, without telling her we loved her?’ ’’ But times have changed. for babies who have died in utero or from early delivery, and most parents get the chance to hold the body of their son or daughter.

When you expected to spend years raising a child, but you only have a few hours with them, how do you spend that precious time?

People name their babies. They take photographs and handprints.

They gently wash and dress them. And above all, they hold them.

Heartfelt is a not-for-profit organisation that uses professional photographers, who volunteer to come at short notice to take pictures of stillborn or critically ill babies and children, for free.

The organisation’s national president Gavin Blue says professionals can carefully frame and light a photograph to reduce the disturbing impact of the medical aspects. ‘‘Talking about stillborn children is still a social taboo, and people do shy away, so it really helps if people have a photograph they feel comfortable sharing, that won’t upset people.’’

While women’s grief can be further complicated by the physical impact of childbirth – sometimes labouring to give birth to a baby they know has died – men’s anxiety for their wives and partners can mean they fail to acknowledge their own sadness.

Psychologist Penny Brabin, a specialist in grief counselling for baby loss, and on the board of the International Stillbirth Alliance, says grief-stricken fathers can be neglected in the focus on mothers. ‘‘But men have been in labour wards since the late ’70s, so these days they are much more part of it.’’

With ultrasound images of babies in utero available so early now, parents attach much earlier to the idea of their baby, she says. ‘‘We have fewer babies, and we have more control over pregnancy, and women are more vocal – all these things have changed the way we respond to the loss of a baby.’’

Hospital staff are these days much more aware of how to deal with parents who have lost a baby, she says. ‘‘Most of these parents are relatively young and some haven’t seen death before.’’

While much has changed for the better in the past few decades, she says more attention is needed to help parents handle the terror of subsequent pregnancies after losing a baby. ‘‘A lot of women are really suffering through it. We need some better programs in place.’’

Diamond Creek mother Amber Bull’s first child was stillborn at 24 weeks. While she now has two healthy children, she says her later pregnancies were periods of high anxiety. ‘‘With the next pregnancy, I couldn’t enjoy it. I felt angry about that, like I’d lost my innocence,’’ she says. ‘‘With the second one it was even worse. I felt like, ‘When’s my luck going to run out?’ ’’ Surrounded at home by pictures of babies, children and family, sipping tea while her newborn son naps, she says the loss has changed her profoundly. ‘‘I make a concerted effort to appreciate every day, and to remember how lucky we are to have two healthy children,’’ she says. ‘‘The things we once might have worried about, they’re insignificant now.’’ ■

‘I was just numb’

On Labour Day weekend this year, Kathryn Lieschke and her husband Lance were taking it easy at their South Morang home, their first child due in less than four weeks.

But on Sunday, March 11, it occurred to Kathryn she hadn’t felt her baby move for a day or so.

She and Lance headed to hospital, expecting to be reassured with a scan, or at worst, taken for an emergency caesarean. ‘‘Even I could tell, looking at the scan, that there was no heartbeat,’’ says Lieschke, 29. The baby had died, the cause unknown.

After an induced 12-hour labour, the pair had 12 hours with their baby boy Toby, bathing, dressing and photographing him, and finally, saying goodbye. ‘‘I felt like my life couldn’t go on,’’ Kathryn says. ‘‘I felt I would never laugh, or ever be happy again.’’

They had a funeral 10 days later, then Kathryn returned to her job as a public servant much sooner than expected.

Six months on, she says the hardest thing to come to terms with is that life is moving on without the baby for whom she expected to be caring. ‘‘Even the seasons are changing. And Toby’s not here.’’

While she’s had strong support from close family and friends, she’s been a little shocked by acquaintances who seem surprised she didn’t get over it after a month or two, and by those who try to comfort her by saying she will have other children. ‘‘They think because we never met him, that it’s not like really losing him. But for us he was our child, our first-born child. ‘‘For us, Toby was very real. We felt him move and saw his heart beat. We made plans that included him. He was already part of our lives.

Yes, we might have other babies. But they won’t replace Toby.’’

Four years after her baby boy died in utero at 24 weeks, Amber Bull’s voice still shakes when she talks about it.

These days she has a healthy two-year-old, and a six-week-old baby boy, but the loss of her firstborn is still raw, she says.

She went to the Mercy Hospital with husband Travis for a scheduled check-up when she was 24 weeks’ pregnant, and was told there was no heartbeat. ‘‘I honestly can’t remember much. In some ways I think I’ve blocked it out. I think I went into shock. All I could think of was that I still had to give birth,’’ she says. ‘‘I was just numb, thinking ‘How am I going to get through this?’ ’’ After a 12-hour labour, the baby was born. ‘‘I think that was when it hit me, when I saw Travis holding him. I couldn’t even speak to him. I was just too upset. I was crying.’’

She went home, keen to ‘‘get out of there as fast as I could’’. Back home in Diamond Creek, she crawled into bed and stayed there for days.

Four days later they had a private ceremony at a funeral home. ‘‘That’s when we had a chance to say goodbye, to tell him that we loved him. It was just us. No celebrant.’’

Now 34, Bull says if she could do anything differently, she would have had photos taken. ‘‘I didn’t even realise it was something you could do. I really wish we had it now. You have so little to show for the whole experience ... And I regret not having a funeral where we invited other members of the family because it would have helped them. But at the time, you just do what you have to do.’’

It was her first experience with death, and it has given her more empathy, she says. ‘‘It makes you stronger, in some ways. I feel like, if I can get through that I can get through anything. It’s made us stronger as a couple, for the same reason.’’

Heather Gudenkauf Mira, RRP $29.99 One Breath Away had me hooked from the first few pages as Heather Gudenkauf quickly sets up the scene and gradually reveals more about the mystery intruder as the book goes on. In the middle of a snowstorm, an unknown man with a gun has entered a US school and taken a third grade classroom hostage, for reasons unknown to everyone. A skilled storyteller, Gudenkauf tells the tale from different points of view – from both inside and out of the classroom – but it never feels jarring and as a reader I really cared for the characters and empathised with what they were all going through. What seems at the time like a crucial plot point is revealed in the first few pages, which makes an extremely tense read to see how the story will get to that point in time and what the hint really means to the broader plot. oll up, roll up, for the greatest show in town, or at the very least, the surprisingly decent sequel that is Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted.

All the team are back – Alex the lion (Ben Stiller), Melman the giraffe (David Schwimmer), Marty the zebra (Chris Rock) and Gloria the hippo (Jada Pinkett Smith) – and they’re still trying to get back to New York.

Their gang of sidekicks – the penguins, lemurs, and King Julien (Sacha Baron Cohen) – are still

stealing almost every scene they are in. So far, it’s business as usual.

But unlike Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa, where it was more of the tame-animals-meetswild animals theme of the first movie, this latest offering indulgently sets itself in sophisticated Europe, and the results are sublime.

With the misguided help of the penguins, the gang of four recklessly buy a circus as a front to travel incognito. Unfortunately the circus is remarkably bad, and since their return to the US relies on them being picked up for a tour, but only if they are remarkably good, they need a change of luck, pronto.

Cue frankly hilarious scenes of them transforming a tiger with performance anxiety, several super cranky performing dogs, an

endearingly stupid seal (Martin Short), and King Julien’s love story with the circus bear.

All this is set against a back story of the gang being pursued by the ruthless, and creepy, animal control officer Captain Chantel DuBois (Frances McDormand), who is determined to have Alex’s head as a trophy. Her relentless campaign is one of the best, and most disturbing, elements of the movie. She also has a wicked way with a dart gun, kick-arse scooter driving skills and a lipstick fetish.

Toss in a couple of chase scenes, most featuring the maniac Captain DuBois, and the whole thing culminates in a circus performance that well earns the 3D entry cost.

There is a lot going on with Madagascar 3, almost all of it good. A sequel worth watching.

But do you like your colleagues enough to spend five days with them, in the middle of nowhere, rationing water supplies instead of sharing the office fridge milk?

That’s precisely the question posed to four Australian workplaces in new ABC2 series Do or Die. The reality-cum-survival program is led by ‘‘top corporate psychologist’’ Dr Travis Kemp (pictured), who each week dumps a group of seemingly friendly colleagues in the middle of what he calls a ‘‘survival adventure’’.

the next round of performance reviews.

The first cab off the rank was Sydney cocktail bar Goldfish. Six employees, including alpha-male owners Ben and Dan, set out in last night’s episode on what they believed would be a fun, team-building exercise. They were visibly worried when, motioning towards the outback, Kemp declares ‘‘stuff happens out here’’.

Within minutes, arguments were breaking out about where the group should set up its home base, how long it should take them to run out of water (the answer was mid-afternoon) and exactly how to divvy up a backpack’s worth of food. By the time Kemp left them to their own devices and the group was forced to trek six hours across a salt lake in 38-degree heat, it was almost psychological warfare.

Actor Samuel Johnson provides narration throughout, and the show looks fantastic – almost like a tourism ad for some remote corners of the country. The gist of the gruelling exercise is to encourage openness, honesty, stronger leadership and better lines of communication in the workplace. But, as the

Four Frenchkiss Records, $19.99 Despite rumours Kele Okereke was being forced out of the band, or that they were breaking up for good, British four-piece Bloc Party have just released their fourth album, aptly titled Four. Thankfully for long-time fans the band has ditched the misguided electronica that hindered their previous studio album, 2008’s Intimacy, and Okereke’s poor 2010 solo effort The Boxer, for a more guitar-focused sound that harkens back to their masterful debut, Silent Alarm. Lead single Octopus is an immediate highlight with its hypnotic riff, while V.A.L.I.S. and Truth hit upon the yearning indie rock that Bloc Party do so well, the latter soaring with Okereke’s minimalist lyrics in an ode to a lover.

However the album still feels somewhat slight, with forgettable tracks such as the death metal-aping 3x3 ruining the flow.

Get the deluxe edition; the two bonus tracks, Mean and Leaf Skeleton, are better than a number of songs on the album.

Almost all grape juice is white. Yes, there are grapes with red juice, called teinturier grapes, but they’re rare. All grapes have different flavour characteristics, not unlike the variety of flavours found in other fruit. Red wine, therefore, is not one thing – it offers a world of variety.

2009 Pizzini Nebbiolo, King Valley, Victoria, $50 Nebbiolo is a grape with potential for immense tannins and acidity. It famously makes the wines of Barolo and Barbaresco in Italy. Here, the Pizzini family makes a wine with a savoury nose.

There is fruit, but also seasoned wood, dried rose petals and a note hinting at prosciutto. I love that.

In your mouth, there is generous but not jammy fruit. It is silken, then as the wine is swallowed, the tannins start to emerge.

Cabernet sauvignon has its detractors, but pay little attention to them. Good cabernet sauvignon should never be out of favour. And this is very good indeed. The wine has terrific palate weight. There is obvious fruit, yet it is savoury and complex. Notes of dark fruit, earth and baking spice emerge with each sip.

This wine has terrific structure and good acidity that gives it incredible length and is evidence of its potential for long ageing.

While it is far too young to declare greatness, this wine will happily evolve during the next decade to deliver something quite delicious.

The price of saving fuel It’s not always just your hip pocket that benefits from choosing diesel

ROD EASDOWN BEHIND THE WHEEL he normal reason for buying a vehicle with a diesel motor, rather than a petrol one, is fuel economy.

You may pay a bit more for a litre of diesel, but it will take you markedly further.

Depending on how far you go you’ll amortise the extra price of the diesel motor in two years, maybe four, and ever after you’ll be ahead.

Occasionally, however, you’d buy a diesel for other reasons and the Mazda CX5 is one of those times.

The CX5 is a far better vehicle with a diesel motor.

I’ve driven a couple of them with thee 113-kilowatt two-litre petrol motor and d it struggles a bit.

Not necessarily because it lacks power, er, more because the auto gearbox is so stridently calibrated for fuel economy, and nd so reluctant to change down, that as soon on as the terrain starts to get hilly the vehicle feels decidedly sluggish. You really have to whip hip it.

The diesel is only a tad more powerful but it has more than twice the torque. Even en in higher gears, it sails up hills cleanly and d easily, and generally feels far more flexiblee and agile.

And it gets much better fuel economy att the same time.

But there’s a catch.

You can only get the diesel if you order a more expensive all-wheel-drive model, and then it has to be either Sport or Grand Touring specification – you can’t get the base se spec in diesel.

That means the cheapest diesel is $43,334,

up $3451 on the equivalent petrol model, but a whopping $12,000 increase over the cheapest CX5.

You’d have to really, really want one.

But if you can go the th extra bucks, it’s a good thing.
