VETERAN independent councillor Rex Griffin has been elected mayor of the Whittlesea council. Promising to give residents a voice, Cr Griffin was the only one of three former councillors in north ward to be re-elected as new blood flushed into the council, which now has a Labor majority. Five new faces lined up last week to be sworn in to the 11-member council – two more than the former council – and two of them, Ricky Kirkham and Adrian Spinelli, are 23. Cr Griffin was nominated for his second stint as mayor by another long serving-councillor, Norm Kelly, who applauded his community service, including his role as a justice of the peace. Cr Griffin defeated another old-time councillor, Kris Pavlidis, winning the job seven to four. Two north councillors, John Fry and Pam McLeod, were ousted by newcomers Ricky Kirkham, and Nicola Davis, while Cr Griffin came second after preferences in the threeseat ward. Three other new councillors were elected – Ken Harris joins former councillors Mary Lalios, Sam Alessi and Norm Kelly in south east ward, while Darryl Sinclair and Adrian Spinelli, join re-elected councillors Stevan Kozmevski and Kris Pavlidis in south west ward. Long-serving councillor Frank Merlino retired before the election. Incumbent councillor Lalios, who has served seven years on council including a stint as mayor, captured the biggest number of votes. She had 8120 votes or 26 per cent of the south east vote. The win comes des-

We work with two secondary and four primary schools. The scholarships pay for books and uniforms that otherwise the students couldn’t afford. Programs include the student-to-student project for primary school in which an advanced reader is buddied up with one who is behind and they read to each other over the phone three times a week. The iTrack internet program matches secondary students with volunteer mentors in their chosen career field and they can talk about how to take that career path, including the subjects and skills required. The homework club at Lalor Secondary College uses volunteer tutors and we know at the beginning of the school year what skills they need. It’s not only for students. The Financial Literary program is for secondary students

and parents, teaching them how to balance wants and needs, to budget, to avoid scams and about superannuation and tax. Some parents approached us saying they were embarrassed about their English, so we have an English program for them using volunteers from the Adult Multicultural Education Services. Towards Christmas we start getting calls about education scholarships as people start to panic that they have to buy textbooks and uniforms in the new year; some calls come from women who have separated and find it hard to cope. We offer the scholarships from primary school and aim not just to support students to secondary school, but to achieve their dreams. If they really go for it, if they have a passion to pursue their goals, we see students graduate from university or TAFE where they wouldn’t have been able to without the scholarship. You see students who have really grown, spread their wings and know exactly where they want to go and what they want to do. ■

Building costs fall as fire zones change THOUSANDS of new home builders in the city of Whittlesea will have construction costs slashed after the state government removed bushfire-prone area zones on their land. Removing the zone – which requires the use of expensive bushfire-resistant building materials – will also benefit existing home owners who want to make alterations or build extensions. Whittlesea council won its battle, after intense lobbying, to lift the zone imposed after the Black Saturday fire on most of the municipality north of Epping. Whittlesea council’s building services manager Peter Phillips said the bushfire zone had been lifted from 15,500 properties. He said the development of several new subdivisions and estates, such as Laurimar in Doreen and Aurora in North Epping, had reduced the bushfire risk. He said these areas had been ‘‘inaccurately designated as being at risk’’

Ross Savage, a building supervisor for Zuccala Homes, at an Epping house that escaped the extra building costs and been subjected to strict building codes including additions such as decks, garages and verandahs.

‘‘The higher standards of construction are appropriate when properties are within bushfire-prone areas, but

not necessary when well outside that risk area,’’ he said. ‘‘We have worked with representa-

tives at the Department of Planning and Community Development to produce a draft bushfire prone area [zone] map that excludes thousands of City of Whittlesea properties, which were inaccurately designated as being at risk.’’ He said the state government signed off on the amendments. Builder Greg Zuccala said the bushfire zone added $3000 to $5000 to a home worth about $200,000. He said customers who had been hit with the additional costs ‘‘were not happy’’. ‘‘Common sense has prevailed,’’ he said. ‘‘A reduction in the bushfire zones makes more sense and we’re comfortable with the amended areas.’’ The department did not respond to questions about whether other areas were affected or why the bushfireprone area zone was applied to Whittlesea’s growth areas. The Northern Weekly revealed the council was lobbying for bushfire prone zone amendments in July.

MAB Corporation spokesman Richard Johnston said its 240 UNI HILL building was becoming a medical hub in the north. Mr Johnston said the developer was also opening an $80 million business park in Epping. He said 4000 workers would be employed by the estimated 120 businesses that would move into the site in the next five to seven years. Mr Johnston said many construction jobs would be created when building starts on the 62-hectare site early next year. Mr Johnston said stage one of the six-stage development was on the market and the first businesses were expected to move into the site in mid2013. He said Alliance Business Park would become a key industrial hub in Melbourne’s north. “We expect demand to be high due to the shortage of industrial land in the north,’’ he said. Sue Hewitt

Parents and toddlers discover over four sessions how to connect their iPads to big screens to enjoy storytelling, songs, ebooks and apps, as well as playtime. Library manager Tania Barry launched the program after noticing parents were using iPads to occupy toddlers. ‘‘I discovered it’s a useful tool for pre-school literacy, creative play and school readiness,’’ she says.

New fertility centre to serve the north BUNDOORA will get its first IVF unit at University Hill early next year. A Melbourne fertility centre will open the IVF clinic at MAB Corporation’s office and medical centre building, known as 240 UNI HILL. Growing demand for full IVF services in the north had encouraged the City Fertility Centre to open a Bundoora centre, chief executive officer Adnan Catakovic said. He said the centre would initially have five staff and three fertility specialists but could expand as demand increased. ‘‘This brand new facility will provide vital fertility and IVF care,’’ he said. ‘‘It will have a modern and comfortable feel rather than a clinical hospital atmosphere. Our aim is to provide a warm and welcoming environment for our patients.’’ He said University Hill was an ideal location, with its proximity to transport making it convenient for patients who had to travel.

Dismay over Mernda coffee stop A STORM is brewing over the allegedly forced closure of a familyrun mobile coffee trailer in Mernda. The trailer served coffee and toasted sandwiches to early morning commuters and truck drivers on Plenty Road from 5am weekdays until it fell foul of authorities a few weeks ago. Bec Williams and her husband Leeton claim they had to close their Beanz a Buzzin coffee trailer because Whittlesea council has classified it as a ‘‘takeaway shop’’, not a mobile venue. The Williams claim they operated from the car park of an antique shop – the only commercial operation in a rural section of Plenty Road in Mernda – for more than two years before council ‘‘changed the rules’’. Mrs Williams claimed that when they opened she was told she did not require a planning permit because the business was mobile and operated on private property. It was only after an unrelated com-

plaint, over their A-frame advertising boards, that council officers allegedly told her the trailer was now classified as a ‘‘takeaway shop’’ and needed a planning permit, which would be refused because their roadside site was in a rural zone. ‘‘It is not a tacky kebab trailer – it’s worth $60,000 and we serve coffee as good as you get in Lygon Street,’’ she said. The business’s Facebook page had almost 150,000 views between October 6 and 12, with increased support from people missing their early brew, she said. She said her husband had a workplace accident in 2008 and could not work as a carpenter again, so the coffee trailer was their only source of income. Council spokeswoman Maria Cooke said: ‘‘Council is assisting Ms Williams in exploring other opportunities on nearby land, including planning permit requirements. Council has not yet received an application for any alternative site.’’

Cops in Doreen drug search POLICE blockaded a northern suburbs street after allegedly finding explosive devices and drugs in a house garage. Officers are investigating whether the house in Garden Street, Doreen, was used to manufacture illicit drugs. Inspector Bob Dykstra said police were called to a domestic disturbance about 10am on Friday, October 26, where they found ammunition. After speaking to a male at the house, the police executed search warrants and found a firearm, explosive devices and unspecified drugs in the garage, he said. The police bomb response unit was called to dispose of the alleged explosive devices. Inspector Dykstra said the operation took until the early hours of the following morning to ensure the house was safe. ‘‘We didn’t know what we were dealing with, we had to identify the hazards,’’ he said. He said a man was helping police with inquiries. No charges had been laid. – Sue Hewitt

Good to go

I voted for new blood that will hopefully listen (‘‘Victorian council election 2012: New blood in Whittlesea council’’, NW website, October 30). Please do not allow big companies in the township of Whittlesea. We don’t want our town overrun by McDonald’s, Woolworths, KFC etc.

Land has already been bought by the government in Breadalbane Avenue, Mernda, for a P-12 state school (‘‘High school placement crisis looms for Mernda, Doreen students’’, NW, October 16). The current government needs to act now to start building this school. This fastgrowing area of Melbourne is being neglected by the government with substandard access to public transport and now schools. Get to it, Ted.

Not for profit I have no affiliation with the school or church, but I think it is sad when an organisation as large and powerful as the Uniting Church can’t maintain a school until it becomes viable (‘‘Acacia closure sparks exodus’’, NW, October 30). The school is in a huge growth area and surely the church could pay out the owed monies and allow the school to start again. Since when did schools become businesses? Surely the council costs would have been known prior to the commencement of the school building. Health, education and social services were never intended to show a profit.

On the right track I think this situation can be summed up in two words: poor planning (‘‘Tackling Aurora transport woes’’, NW, October 30). It’s all very well to build these massive new housing developments, but unless the proper infrastructure is in place the people living in them risk becoming isolated. It’s pretty simple – build that train line. The government always seems to find enough money to build massive road projects (Western Ring Road, EastLink etc) but never enough to service the outer suburban

Please, please, farmers, protect your children when out on the farm (‘‘Quad bike deaths alarm’’, NW, October 30). Living on a farm is one of the most dangerous things you can do and many farmers are far too relaxed about safety. I know of two families who lost a child in situations that could have easily been avoided. Take a few extra seconds to put a helmet on and never let children ride unsecured on tractors. Keren / via email

Thanks to a battler I, like many women, am glad terminations are legal in Victoria (‘‘Power, corruption and lives’’, NW, October 30). The pro-life lobby should

face up to the fact that all the legislation in the world will never stop abortions. I think President Bill Clinton summed it up when he said they should be safe, legal and rare. If the state were to remove the legal protection, things would simply return to the situation Jo Wainer faced when she started her campaign: an unregulated backyard industry and thriving corruption. Kudos to Wainer and her fellow campaigners for taking on this battle on behalf of Victorian women. Unfortunately it seems she paid a terribly high price. Andrea / via email

PROFILE

Peace is the word Sue Hewitt meets the La Trobe lecturer training ambassadors to prevent family violence or anti-family violence campaigner Reeta Verma, a spate of murder-suicides involving newly arrived Indian families in Melbourne is a grim reminder of why her work is important. ‘‘It doesn’t have to happen,’’ she says. ‘‘We have to show people how healthy relationships prevent family violence.’’ The La Trobe University law lecturer, based at the Bundoora campus, says a new project hopes to protect women at risk in vulnerable communities in the northern suburbs. It will provide ‘‘healthy relationship ambassadors’’ to teach their migrant and refugee communities how better relationships can prevent domestic violence. The university and Preston’s Spectrum Migrant Resource Centre will provide Australia’s first ambassador program. The first 25 ambassadors, whose intensive month-long training started this week, will work with migrant communities to promote changes in attitudes and behaviours linked to family violence.

F

FREE W PILLeO very

The project will involve Indian, Sudanese, Somali and Iraqi (Arabic and Kurdish speaking) communities in Melbourne. Ms Verma says migrants and refugees experience pressure that can trigger violence. ‘‘They have financial stress, they have no friends or family to support them, they are new to the Australian culture and they have no proper job. But they [perperatrators] cannot blame traditions or customs for family violence. The majority of newly arrived people have happy, cohesive families.’’ Ms Verma wrote the curriculum for the training program, along with Shabbir Wahid from the university’s Centre for Dialogue. ‘‘We spent a year in community consultation and research into cultural complexities in relationships and resettlement issues among new migrants, which can lead to violence, before deciding on the ambassador project.’’ Ms Verma says it is an ‘‘extremely sensitive area of socio-cultural intervention’’. ‘‘The ambassadors will become an important tool in preventing violence against women in their

communities by encouraging a new social consciousness that it’s OK to talk about such issues in a non-judgmental way,’’ she says. ‘‘Individuals will be able to discuss factors giving rise to unhealthy relationships and, if necessary, seek appropriate help.’’ Ms Verma has worked in the family violence field for 20 years. In the early days it was a taboo subject, she says. She joined the Taskforce Against Domestic Violence in Indian Communities in 2008, and says many more people are now discussing the issue openly. ‘‘The ambassadors will tell their communities that behaviour such as slapping, hair pulling, pushing and more, are not all right. We have to educate the community, the victims and the perperatrators.’’ Mr Wahid says some elders in the Indian community are ‘‘reluctant to air issues relating to violence in relationships’’. ‘‘It is important to go to the root of the problem and not deal with them as isolated incidents.’’ ■

COVERSTORY

atherine Deveny is a Melbourne writer known across Australia for declaring that God is bullshit, women who take their husband’s surnames are stupid and that monogamy is a crock. Although we know an awful lot of what Deveny thinks, it’s rare that she gets to tell her own story. Other writers – not to mention politicians, members of the clergy, shock jocks and anyone who owns a Ralph Lauren polo shirt – are keen to paint the 44-yearold mother of three as ‘‘acid-tongued’’, ‘‘controversial’’ and ‘‘provocative’’. But according to the woman herself, she’s just ‘‘singing from her heart’’. ‘‘I’m a mum, a partner, a cyclist, a friend,’’ she says, sipping black tea in her Coburg kitchen. ‘‘Basically, all I try to do in life is get to the best possible place with the least possible damage and I’ll stand up for what I believe in. I could not give a f--k what people think.’’ Words are Deveny’s stock-in-trade, a trade she spruiks through newspaper columns, social media, writing workshops, radio gigs, stand-up comedy, guest spots on ABC’s hugely popular Q&A and, earlier this year, a stint on SBS’s critically acclaimed series Go Back to Where You Came From, on which she caused something of a sensation. Deveny’s latest project is The Happiness Show, her first novel but not her first book. She has three others under her belt: a trilogy of newspaper column best-ofs, It’s Not My Fault They Print Them, Say When and Free to a Good Home. Deveny’s signature style of eye-watering honesty sprinkled with humour is evident throughout her new book. It’s about Lizzie, a Brunswick mother-of-two and stand-up comedian who’s happy with her lot, including her partner, Jim. Days before Christmas, the BBC invites her to London to discuss turning her one-woman show into a television series, which sets her on a collision course with Tom, a man from her past who’s her ‘‘unfinished business’’. Although they’re both in happy relationships, Lizzie and Tom rekindle their love match. Deveny says she wrote the novel 10 years ago and never meant for anyone else to read it, let alone publish it. The story is partially based on her own experiences, but somewhere during the writing process the characters took on lives of their own, she says. ‘‘I wrote it when my son Charlie was born, and I sat over there (pointing to her plush couch), under the ceiling fan, wearing a sarong and breastfeeding a baby. And this book just came to me,” she says. ‘‘I was compelled to keep writing it because I wanted to find out what happened at the end of this story. I’d never written a novel before and I still don’t see myself as a novelist. At the time, I just kind of put it away and didn’t think about it. ‘‘I knew the major publishers were after books about the harried, working mother who has a husband who doesn’t understand her, he can’t be left alone with the kids, she wants to eat ice-cream more than have sex; and that wasn’t my experience and that wasn’t the kind of book I wanted to read at all.’’ The relationship between Lizzie and Tom may be confronting and their actions hurtful, she says, but they are typical of human nature. ‘‘The book is about different forms of love and challenging what’s considered normal when it comes to relationships,’’ she says. Love is complicated, says Deveny. Long-term heterosexual monogamy is not a realistic expectation for many people, she says, and she’s baffled as to why this continues to be defined as ‘‘normal’’. ‘‘The nuclear family started when the life expectancy was 35,” she says. “We’re now talking about 85. How many

C

decisions do you make in your 20s or 30s that are still going to be practical or suitable 20 years later? ‘‘We seem to be coping very well with the fact that technology changes; we’ll probably move suburbs, we’ll probably have lots of different jobs, but we don’t seem to be as good as adapting to reality of what modern relationships truly are.’’ Even before its launch, the book has generated interest from film and television producers, something Deveny is clearly pleased about. But she’s adamant she would never want anyone to change the ending. ‘‘One of the things when you have relationships going on in books is you have a ‘passion and regret it’ moment or they don’t do it and they regret it, but this book is not that,” she says. “This is a very modern love story and I think some people will find it very confronting.’’

Deveny grew up in Reservoir, an D ‘‘awful’’ place where racism, homophobia ‘‘a and a misogyny flourished, she says. ‘‘I an never felt like I fitted in. People weren’t n e happy; they were bitter and had chips h a on their shoulders,” she says. “I wanted o tto o live a life of happiness and not obligation. There were so many things we had obligation to do and I still don’t understand why, because they were not nourishing.’’ Apart from time spent travelling, Deveny has always lived in Melbourne’s north. When she moved out of home, she took up residence in several Fitzroy sharehouses, studied cinema and drama at La Trobe University and got her first big break, writing for Tonight Live with Steve Vizard. She’s now settled in Coburg, in a home she shares with her three sons, Dominic, 14, Hugo, 11, and Charlie, nine, boyfriend Anthony Artmann, two boarders and an overly enthusiastic Jack Russell-cross called Archie. Her open-plan kitchen and family room has a warm, lived-in atmosphere, with photos and other personal items

scattered throughout. In one corner are several guitars, used for impromptu family performances. From the back verandah hangs a bright yellow sign that reads ‘‘atheist kabutz’’. Deveny is fiercely proud, paid-up member of Melbourne’s north. In fact, it’s more akin to a love affair. When I ask what she loves about living in the area, she smiles widely as she says: ‘‘The mix of the migrants, the old Aussies, the student households, the psychopaths, the people from the eastern suburbs trying to get a bit of leftie cred. ‘‘I love the way sometimes people will leave things like free lemons out the front of their house for people to take. I love the posters, the graffiti, the radical knitting. It’s not one size fits all. It’s my spiritual home.’’ Deveny mentions the 30,000 who turned out in Brunswick last month to pay their respects to murdered Irish woman Jill Meagher, whose disappearance from Sydney Road on September 22 sent the city into mourning. Adrian Ernest Bayley, a 41-year-old Coburg man, has been charged with her rape and murder. ‘‘We all took to the street in quiet, peaceful protest and then we just went and had a coffee,’’ Deveny says. Deveny became embroiled in an emotional firestorm when she revealed, during the week Meagher went missing, that she had been accosted earlier this year by a man she said matched the description of a man seen in CCTV footage. When contentious News Limited columnist Andrew Bolt wrote about the situation, some claimed he was trying to lay some blame on Deveny for what happened to Meagher because she hadn’t called Crime Stoppers sooner. Deveny calls the run-in ‘‘some stupid little incident with a dickhead’’. It’s not the first time – nor will it be the last – that Bolt and other conservatives, including fellow News Limited columnist Miranda Devine and Sydney radio host Steve Price, have taken aim at Deveny. In fact, there seem to be two types of people – those who admire Deveny and support her for ‘‘sticking it to the man’’ and those who think she’s a onewoman offending machine. In 2009, The Age dropped her as a weekly columnist after she infamously tweeted during a Logies broadcast that she hoped then 11-year-old Bindi Irwin got ‘‘laid’’ and that Rove McManus’s second wife, Tasma, ‘‘doesn’t die too’’. When I tweeted her about writing this story, an account called Pray4Dev started following me. Its profile states: ‘‘Don’t hate Catherine Deveny. Pray for her. A woman and a mother. She deserves our love not our disgust. Pray for her. Pray for her children.’’ There are certain preconceptions of Deveny because of what she writes and says. She is aware of this, but says she ‘‘never lies down in the chalk outline that is drawn for me’’. The freedom to do what she thinks, when she thinks it, is liberating, she says. And she’s very grateful for it. ‘‘The word I get a lot to describe me, which I find odd, is ‘brave’. I don’t see myself as brave in the slightest,” she says. “I have never once tried to provoke or offend. This is just what I think. But people think that if they are provoked or are offended, then I’ve done that to them. No, no, no. Offence isn’t given, it’s taken and more damage is caused by taking offence than by giving it.’’ As I stand and prepare to leave, Deveny ducks out of her living room and a moment later returns with a colourful cotton bag full of self-inking stamps. ‘‘Would you like me to sign your book?’’ she asks. Before I can answer in the affirmative, she grabs an oversized stamp and presses it against the opening page of my book.‘‘You can’t fake passion,’’ it reads. You sure can’t. ■ The Happiness Show is published by Black Inc. The book will be launched by Julian Burnside at the Bella Union Bar at Trades Hall on November 8. Bulls market When the league comes to town, the ball’s in Bundoora’s court. By Daniel Paproth undoora will get its chance to stamp itself as a suburban tennis superpower when the Asia-Pacific Tennis League rolls into town on November 18. A representative team from Bundoora Tennis Club was selected to compete in the league’s Victorian conference, which runs from November 11 to the final on November 30. From there, the winning men and women’s teams will play off for the title against the best teams from the other states, New Zealand and Asia during the Australian Open in January. Each team will host a round of competition at their home courts, with Bundoora – known as the Bulls – hosting on November 18. It’s perfect timing. The club has significantly redeveloped its courts over the past five years. Two of its eight courts are now Plexicushion, like the surfaces used at Rod Laver Arena for the Australian Open. The courts also have new lighting and fencing. “It’s pretty amazing considering that back when we started it was just two courts and a

B

bus shuttle,” says president Matthew Testolin, 32. “We were getting power from neighbours’ houses.” He says the redevelopments have the club pumped to host its round of the ATL. “It’s pretty big, and there are only six men’s teams from Victoria,” he says. “This is one of the biggest things to happen to us in the last couple of years, being offered the chance to play in a good league.” The competition format is four singles and two doubles matches, with four games needed to win a set. Bundoora’s success in recent years can also be attributed to its head coach, John Hampson, who has a wealth of experience both in coaching and working with Tennis Victoria. His expertise helped the club established two teams in Tennis Victoria’s grade one pennant competition. They both missed out on finals this season but Testolin says Hampson has helped turn the club around. “Getting a really good coach back to the

Glen Flindell (gold medalist, Asia Pacific Deaf Games), Matt Hampson and Matthew Testolin at Bundoora Tennis Club

club has been able to take us back to healthy numbers,” he says. “John’s name is recognised and known throughout Tennis Victoria and Tennis Australia and he has been with us for five or six years now. “He had a fresh outlook on coaching and, watching the kids, it seems it gave them a new

enthusiasm,” says Testolin. Some of the pennant players will be in Bundoora for the ATL. Also playing will be Glen Flindell, a champion deaf tennis player. Testolin won’t be part of that team but says he still loves playing a couple of times a week alongside his role on the committee. ■

EDUCATION

Preparing for prep School’s in for parents and kids, but when is the right time to go? By Angela Allan efore sending your child to school for the first time, there are things that need to be in place at home, says renowned education consultant Kathy Walker. Walker, founder of Early Life Foundations, says that before starting primary school, children benefit from learning independence skills, such as dressing themselves and carrying their own bag, as well as becoming familiar with routines. “We often encourage parents to establish some routines [for children] – getting themselves dressed, making their own bed, packing their own bag – and in the evening, making sure there is a regular bedtime and reading stories together before bed.” Lisa Joseph, a prep transition co-ordinator at Eltham East Primary School, agrees that routines can help with the structured pace of school life. “A routine is important so the child knows the things they need to do before they leave and when they get home from school, but you also need to be careful not to put

B

too much into their world. They need time to be still and quiet and just play.” Play is a big part of developing a strong vocabulary, but Walker encourages parents do this in a friendly, natural way – engaging the child in conversation at the dinner table with no distractions or having them reading stop signs or other car number plates while in the car. “Parents often think that preparation involves having their child recite the alphabet and we say that’s not part of preparation for school. It’s actually more making literacy and numeracy fun and real; we don’t want children to be scared of reading and writing because they’ve been forced to do it over the summer holidays before school starts.” Walker adds that separation anxiety is another issue that may need attention before your child enters school. “If they had separation anxiety in pre-school, it’s a good idea for the parents to talk to the school ahead of time and work out a strategy that would be helpful to the child.”

While children mature at varying rates, there is no proven difference in school readiness between boys and girls. But social maturity and confidence are factors when deciding whether a child is ready to start school, says Joseph. “We want children to be confident when they come and confident in their ability to learn,’’ she says. ‘‘Being able to be social and talk to the teacher about things they like, or have a conversation about the character in the book, are important signs the child is socially ready for school.’’ Adds Walker: “Some boys need an extra year before starting school. The main thing for [assessing] readiness is emotional and social maturity; it’s not so much academic ability.’’ Natasha Elkington, director and teacher of four-year-old kinder at Briar Hill Pre-School, says there is a trend towards having children spend a second year at kinder because parents are more aware of the importance of social maturity on the child’s confidence and

THE MASTER (MA15+) When: Opens November 8 Where: General release

very so often, a film arrives packaged in so much critical adulation that it’s hard to see it clearly. Certainly, the new film by Paul Thomas Anderson is beautifully made. Yet many will leave the cinema puzzled as to what all the fuss is about. Freddie Quell (Joaquin Phoenix) is a shellshocked, booze-soaked World War II veteran. When he stows away on a party boat, he meets Lancaster Dodd (Philip Seymour Hoffman), a self-made mystic leading a quasi-religion called The Cause. The two strike up a curious, father/ son-style relationship, even though Quell poses a threat to The Cause’s stability. This relationship forms the crux of the film but, aside from a few blistering scenes, it is one sketched in broad, loose strokes. The men are never quite sure what they mean to one another, and neither are we. Some critics have found depth in the gaps Anderson leaves, but this takes some digging on the part of the viewer. Still, the opening scenes are so seductive

E

Archie Roach (Liberation) archieroach.com.au

ike many classic soul records, the latest album from indigenous performer Archie Roach comes from a very dark place. Two years ago he lost the love of his life, singer Ruby Hunter. A few months later, Roach suffered a stroke and needed to relearn how to play the guitar. No sooner had he recovered than he was diagnosed with early-stage lung cancer. On Into The Bloodstream, however, hurt takes a back seat to triumph. Gospel singalong Song to Sing sounds like a man shedding off his pain to celebrate each new breath. Even more sombre moments, such as the title track and We Won’t Cry (featuring Paul Kelly) see Roach looking for the light rather than dwelling in darkness. The result is beautiful, timeless and soulful music.

that it takes most of the film for their spell to wear off. However, just when we’re sobering up, Anderson seems to descend into fantasy. It’s as if he changes his mind about Dodd for the final act.

Ultimately, it’s a film of stunning performances and beautiful set pieces. While its sparse and stumbling narrative doesn’t quite earn its epic run-time, The Master provides one of this year’s most sumptuous cinematic experiences.

In superb French drama Spiral, top detective Laure Berthaud (Caroline Proust) is forthright, scruffy and refreshingly relaxed

about her sexual conquests. Spiral can be seen as the blueprint for the current wave of European drama. Its frank approach to the seamier side of life triggered a rise in unglossy realism. It’s this realism that is the true drawcard in SBS’ Euro crime collection. Maybe we no longer believe in hyper-polished home-grown crime dramas. However The Bridge, The Protectors, The Eagle and their fellows are just strange enough to appear true to life.

vineyard that had it planted to take cuttings.” The pair then had to convince the Mornington Peninsula establishment. They wanted to plant the “wrong” type of pinot – the peninsula was pinot noir territory back then. Success built quickly at McCarthy’s and Quealy’s T’Gallant winery (it’s now owned by Treasury Wine Estates and McCarthy still makes the wines), and after their third harvest the wines were quickly developing a following. Today, more than 50 wineries on the Mornington Peninsula produce a pinot gris or

pinot grigio and 140 hectares are shaded by pinot gris vines. The clay soils help to give the wines a richness, and a long ripening period – due to the region’s maritime climate of warm days and cool nights – means they generally have good flavour development and good acidity. Peninsula pinot gris ages well. With time, the wine loses its fruit characteristics, develops savoury and spice characters and becomes more textural. ■ To read more reviews, visit www.theweeklyreview.com.au/wine

Gris or grigio? The same slightly pink, waxy-skinned grape produces pinot gris and pinot grigio. Traditionally, the grape is picked early in north-eastern Italy to produce crisp grigio, while in France’s Alsace region they pick their grapes later and riper to produce the more textural gris. However, there’s a huge swing between crisp and textural and a lot of grey areas in between. “The market is confused. There’s no way you can categorise gris/grigio as a style, nothing hard and fast, so we had to create a new language,” says Kevin McCarthy, who has been working with scientists at the Australian Wine Research Institute to develop the Pinot G scale. This categorises wines on a 10-point scale from crisp to luscious and is starting to appear on more back labels. “The idea with the Pinot G scale is to empower the consumer so they don’t have to guess.”

Ten Minutes By Tractor 10X Pinot Gris 2010 (Mornington) $28; 14%

★★★★★ Just 252 dozen of this were made and it was a stand-out at a recent tasting. It’s fermented with wild yeast in old oak barrels and there’s real character to this. Aromas of fresh-cut pear, white peach, spice and smoky oak are replicated with some plush intensity on the palate. Drinkability is the key to this wine – I found myself going back for more time and again. With a silky-smooth texture, there’s a bright line of mineral-laced acidity that drives the flavours on to a lengthy finish. ost wine drinkers will have a moment that makes an indelible imprint; when everything just clicks and the memory of the wine stays with them forever. For Kevin McCarthy and wife Kathleen Quealy, it was a bottle of Alsatian pinot gris bought from the old Richmond Hill Cellars in the mid-’80s. The wine was not only memorable for the two young Mornington Peninsula winemakers – it was life changing. “As we first tasted a bottle of Alsace pinot gris we nearly fell off our chairs,” says McCarthy, whose pinot gris and pinot grigio have long set the standard for the variety in Australia. Before the bottle had been emptied, McCarthy and Quealy were set on producing their own, but there were a few hurdles to jump before they made their first pinot gris in 1992. “It was a step into the unknown, planting that pinot gris. Our resources back then amounted to a credit card – we were the classic two young kids with an idea,” McCarthy says. “When we decided to put it in, there were no nurseries that had it (for immediate purchase), so we had to go to Wagga Wagga to a

It’s something companies should worry about. When Australians have a bad service experience, they tell, on average, 23 people. All that bad-mouthing has got to have an effect. the internet. Customers aged 35 and under are most inclined to do this with 44 per cent going online after getting the good oil from a bricks and mortar retailer. Canstar Blue is an independent ratings company that has been around for 20 years (it started as Cannex) and surveys products and services across a wide range of categories. It’s a handy guide when you’re buying stuff. It’s at canstarblue.com.au. By the way, 23 per cent of survey respondents said they had too many electronic gadgets and 21 per cent said they’d bought ‘‘must have’’ gadgets that they never use. ■

Retravision, JB Hi Fi, Harvey Norman and Dick Smith. Betta Electrical didn’t score enough responses to be included in the survey. Among other things, retailers were judged on value for money, comparative pricing, range, service at the point of sale and their catalogues, then came a rating for overall satisfaction. The Good Guys scored five stars out of five in every category except point of sale service and after-sales service, where they got four and were knocked off by Retravision with five in both. The bad news for retailers is that the survey found 25 per cent of consumers seek advice from retailers then search for lower prices on

retailers expect a good price but they’re also looking for efficient service and salespeople who can tell them the difference between a plasma and an LCD television and why one may better suit them than the other. These days electronic gadgets, from $200 cameras to $10,000 hook-it-up-yourself home theatre systems, are complex beasts. Not all are intuitive and easy to operate. Try finding and setting up the programmable remote control that’s right for you and you’ll get my drift. This means it’s easy to buy the wrong product, so there’s a lot of questioning and exploration to be done. But slim margins mean retailers can’t afford to employ and train staff like they used to. That’s probably why consumers do so much research on the internet before they purchase. But some retailers are obviously making an effort. The latest Canstar Blue survey of electrical retailers placed The Good Guys at the top of its customer satisfaction survey for the second year running. It was followed by

MOTORING Ferrari buyers, however fast they may drive. The Italians have taken personalisation to new heights. Were you to total every paint, upholstery and trim combination available for your new Ferrari or Maserati you’d come out somewhere north of four million, and that wouldn’t even include the heritage colours they offer. Or you can order your own colour. Take in a swatch of fabric and the Italian paint maestros will match it exactly and suggest complementary colours for the interior. Of course things can go wrong. There’s a famous story in the Sydney motor industry about a special-order Porsche that specified colours so frightful that the factory checked them twice. It was yellow and its bright blue upholstery had gold piping. The problem arose when its buyer died while the car was on the ship to Australia. The dealer was stuck with it; even the buyer’s wife wouldn’t take it. Then a clever salesman took it to the Parramatta Leagues Club and sold it the same night. Team colours. ■

ROD EASDOWN BEHIND THE WHEEL ’ve only ever been chauffeur driven once. It was a terrible letdown. There I was in the rear seat of a long wheelbase Bentley behind a guy in a peaked cap who was acting upon my every instruction, and I discovered a cut-glass port decanter and matching glasses behind a small wooden door that could form a little table. There were two problems. Firstly it wasn’t even lunchtime and secondly the damn thing was empty. Ho hum. Decanters are one of the most popular back seat options among the rich and famous. RollsRoyce has released figures showing that more than half the buyers of their Ghost (that’s the

cheap Rolls-Royce, meaning you usually get a enough change for a six-pack out of a million dollars) and 80 per cent of Phantom buyers (think a mill-and-a-half on up) order what the company terms ‘‘bespoke personalisation’’. This can consist of anything from decanters through to unique paint and upholstery, cigar humidors and picnic baskets to the removal of the back seat and its replacement with wooden pens for the transport of prize-winning rams. Actually that last one may be an urban myth, but the story circulated the western district for years. I once asked Rolls-Royce about it but they pleaded client confidentiality. The personalisation boom has led to a doubling of employees in the bespoke division, where the completed car is sent for its custom fit out. When this is added to the fact that RollsRoyce experienced record sales last year, things in Goodwood, where the Ghost and Phantom are produced, could be said to be going splendidly. Of course custom work takes time but RollsRoyce buyers never seem to be in a hurry. Ditto

Go with the flow It’s an open and shut case for this spacious house

LIAM CARTER PROPERTY WRITER aterstone Hill estate is not your regular city limits development. Firstly, it’s in a valley rather than on a plain. The houses are not lined up in endless rows, but are grouped in comfortable clusters nestled between the Quarry Hills; a protected municipal reserve. It’s the kind of place where ‘‘semi-rural lifestyle” is much more than a marketing slogan. The couple who built the house on the 603 square metre block at 33 Vista Way can happily attest to this. For them it was the happy medium between city and country, just as close to friends in Fitzroy as it is to relatives on acreage outside Whittlesea. They fell instantly in love with the block, which is opposite wetlands with hills front and back. A waterside boardwalk runs across the front of the block down to a park.

W

This parkside patch of Waterstone Hills was the ideal spot to build a house and create a home. The vendors dreamt of a big house and were sold on the idea of two storeys, until they came across this design from Henley Homes. Built in 2006, the house provided the space they desired all on the one level. The double-fronted brick facade is deceptively modest, giving nothing away about the expanses within. The front of the floor plan is defined by a good-sized home office and a large open-plan lounge and dining area. This space is currently used as a cinema room. It’s not until you move further down the hall and into the family hub that you realise why the vendors only needed one floor to satisfy their craving for space. The jaw drops at its size. Polished floorboards extend out past the kitchen as far as the open-plan rumpus. It’s the wow factor that won the vendors over, and it’s this sense of space they hope to reproduce when

they move onto their next project this year. But the size is not just about impressing the socks off guests. It’s also about ease and convenience. With a toddler at home, it provides ample space to play. He can be watching TV in the rumpus, running amok with friends in the living area or playing with his toys in the nearby playroom, all under the watchful eye of mum. The kitchen is positioned at the heart of the house, and is clearly set up for those who love to cook. It has a burly 900mm, stainless steel oven, large pantry, D’Amani dishwasher, double fridge space, glass splashback and a big, L-shaped island bench with fitted sink. Having plenty of storage was also high up on the vendors’ wish list when it came to building this house and their wishes were granted. There are big cupboards in the laundry, built-in wardrobes in the secondary bedrooms, and even extra space in the double garage. Ideal for families with a third car, boat or

caravan, there is additional parking in the backyard, which can be reached via the drivethrough garage. Outside, the modest space has been used wisely. Guests relaxing in the walled entertaining area can enjoy meals prepared in the large wood-fire pizza oven, and served with vegetables grown in the good-sized vegie patch around the back. Should guests want to stay the night, there is ample accommodation. Three bedrooms are positioned in the children’s wing. They share a separate toilet and large bathroom with spa; an added extra selected by the vendors. They also opted for the very best when it came to their bedroom. It has two mirror-image walk-in wardrobes, and an en suite with twin vanities. Living here in a big house among the hills, and with wetlands and parks just opposite, has been a delight for this young family. The next owners look set to be just as lucky. ■
