Police kick off three-pronged blitz on crime POLICE are staging a three-pronged blitz in the northern suburbs after a spate of rock and egg-throwing incidents, and crime in a shopping centre. Local police and officers from the Operations Response Unit swooped on Epping Plaza last Friday in the first of a series of blitzes. Inspector Paul Tysoe said police would use the element of surprise to catch offenders. ‘‘There has been a concentration of crime in the centre, including stealing from shops, theft

of cars and theft from cars, and assaults,’’ he said. The squads would also target car parks at the Northern Hospital and Epping railway station, where parked vehicles were vulnerable to thefts. Police are also targeting ‘‘antisocial’’ behaviour, including ‘‘eggings’’ of houses and cars in Doreen, during the school holidays. Mr Tysoe urged people to report egg-throwing incidents so police could gather ‘‘intelligence’’.

Transit police are targeting offenders after rock-throwing attacks on buses in Epping and Mill Park. Plainclothes and uniform police are blitzing the bus routes during the school holidays, transit police spokesman Senior Sergeant Patrick Allen said. There have been more than 20 rock-throwing incidents around McDonalds Road, Epping, in the past nine months. – Sue Hewitt

THE Mernda Football Club might have won a premiership but it faces a battle to survive. The players filled the Whittlesea council chamber last week begging for help. They want council to upgrade their ‘‘unsafe’’ grounds and ‘‘decrepit’’ facilities in Schotters Road, claiming it is costing them players and sponsors. The senior and junior members could not train on the grounds last season because of inadequate drainage. The club spent thousands of dollars hiring alternative training grounds and have asked council to be reimbursed. Mayor Stevan Kozmevski told players and supporters the club could use the football ground being built at Woodland Waters estate in Mernda in 2014. But club stalwart Tom Felle said this was not a solution because the grounds would not have any facilities until council found money to

MYVOICE ive years ago a group of interested people from Probus, a professional and business social group for men and women, formed the Whittlesea Township Choir. There are 15 members, including three men, who are aged in their 30s to 80s. We are a non-audition community choir and sing a cappella. We welcome new members. We are planning to launch our first CD, Out of the Ash, in October-November featuring three songs, two of which we wrote with composer Sue Johnson. It was recorded in the Uniting Church Hall in Whittlesea. The first song we wrote was Whittlesea Town, based on what we love about living here; things such as the natural beauty, pleasant people and calm pace. Out of the Ash is based on our experience in the 2009 bushfires; it is a choral piece in four-part harmony, with Sue Johnson on piano. As you can imagine, it is a very emotional song for us. The lyrics include this refrain: ‘‘Together we stand our voices raised higher, bonded as one by the heat of the fire.’’ The third song on the CD is a freedom song from South Africa, Shoshaloza, which is great fun to sing. Our repertoire includes an eclectic range of music and we perform, by request, for local groups such as aged care facilities and at community events. Last weekend on September 30, we were part of the Melbourne Arts Centre’s Raising the Roof concert. We were ‘‘planted’’ in pairs in the audience as part of a massed singing event, and led the audience in song in Hamer Hall. We were one of many regional community choirs that came together from all over the state to be part of the concert featuring vocal and instrumental ensembles from communities across Victoria. It is the first time we have sung at Hamer Hall, and it was great fun. It suited our motto: ‘‘Singers are Bringers of Joy.’’ ■

RSPCA on hunt for cat killer BY SUE HEWITT

Green brigade out to spread harmony The name might be a tongue-twister but the notes that come from the Cantorion Cymreig Victoria Welsh Choir are heavenly. The choir, including Colin Roberts, Colin Evans and Bill Denholm, which has performed around the world, recently charmed residents at the South Morang’s Arilla Retirement Village with hymns, arias and Broadway hits. The choir came third in the National Eisteddfod of Wales in 2004.

A COWARDLY animal killer who shot a cat with a high-powered bow and arrow and left it to die in Mernda is being hunted by authorities. The cat would have been facing the offender because it was shot through the front left ribcage with the hightech arrow exiting through the right side of its back. ‘‘This is an horrific act,’’ senior RSPCA inspector Simon Primrose said. ‘‘It was obviously a deliberate act. If it is a thrill kill, it is concerning that it could happen again.’’ The tabby and white female was seen alive and uninjured near the Shell service station in Plenty Road, Mernda on Sunday, September 23. The following day it was spotted running with the arrow embedded in it, but it was not reported until after its

body was discovered on Tuesday in the car park at the Mernda Mechanic Institute hall, near Bridge Inn Road. The RSPCA was notified last Wednesday and recovered the body. ‘‘This is considered a high-end cruelty case where the animal was likely to have endured hours of suffering before it died,’’ Mr Primrose said. ‘‘It appears to have been shot at close range as the cat was facing or walking towards the offender. ‘‘Someone is out there using a high powered weapon in a public area – they could have shot a child.’’ He appealed for witnesses to hunt down the animal killer who, if successfully prosecuted, could face up to two years’ jail or a maximum $69,000 fine. The cat was not microchipped or desexed but did not have fight wounds typical of feral cats, he said. ■ People with information should contact the RSPCA on 9224 2222.

WHITTLESEA council is losing its longestserving councillor in a shock lead-up to elections. Frank Merlino, who has served 22 years and been mayor four times, is not among the 48 candidates vying for 11 vacancies. A new lobby group has emerged with Bicycle Network Victoria rating pro-bike candidates on its website. There is a marked increase in the number of female candidates for Whittlesea – 22 women and 26 men have put their hands up. In the most sought-after south east ward, which has 22 candidates standing for four vacancies, there is an equal split between male and female contenders. In south west ward, seven women and eight men are vying for four vacancies, while in north ward there are seven men and four women

battling for three spots. Of the nine councillors, eight are standing in the newly drawn up wards that have two extra councillor positions. One of the youngest contenders is 19-year-old Mill Park university student Alahna Desiato, who is lobbying to extend tram route 86 to South Morang. ‘‘The lack of public transport in the south east ward is a huge issue and has influenced my decision to run for council,’’ she said. ‘‘I will represent a youthful and energetic approach for council decision-making.’’ Running for north ward is Ricky Kirkham, 23, an army logistics adviser who was deployed to support efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan in 2009. ‘‘This was an amazing experience and has fuelled my desire to continue to serve the public,’’ he said. – Sue Hewitt

NBN in sports training Australia’s first NBN-enabled sports training session was held in South Morang last week. NBN Co staged the event to coincide with the ‘‘switchon’’ of 2300 properties in South Morang last Wednesday.

Online bid on crossroads

‘No’ vote to class action

BY SUE HEWITT

WHITTLESEA council has decided not to join a class action suing power company SP Ausnet over the Black Saturday fires. Council sought legal advice about joining the action by Maurice Blackburn over the Kilmore East bushfires which killed 119 people and in a secret meeting last week voted against it. The council assets and infrastructure destroyed in the fire were covered by insurance, said Tracey Mallett, council’s acting director of finance and organisation improvement. “Council is acutely aware of the loss and devastation felt by the local community through the tragic Black Saturday bushfires,’’ she said. ‘‘We were at the frontline of response and recovery and our recovery support to the local community still continues. Council spent just over $6 million in our bushfire recovery efforts, and received almost $5 million in funding support including donations.’’ – Sue Hewitt

WHITTLESEA resident Hayley Skerry is leading an online movement to improve what she believes is a dangerous intersection. She said the intersection of Plenty and Wallan roads and Laurel and Macmeikan streets would claim a life unless traffic lights were installed or other measures taken. The situation would worsen once the McDonald’s restaurant opened in Plenty Road, near the Whittlesea Primary School, said Mrs Skerry (pictured). ‘‘I’ve avoided this intersection since I got my learner’s permit in 1998. There is confusion over who has right of way and there are no adequate turning lanes. The confusion and risk are worse at school drop-off and pick-up times as the traffic increases. ‘‘There’s nowhere for pedestrians to cross except at the school crossing.’’ Mrs Skerry has started an online petition at gopetition.com with 65 signatures so far and a Facebook campaign with almost 200 ‘‘likes’’.

Happy days

LETTERSOFTHEWEEK Find your focus I was rather dismayed at Rod Easdown’s article ‘‘Safety First’’ (RL, September 18) . Rod discussed so-called ‘‘safety’’ features on vehicles such as the latest Volvos that have blind spot, lane-straying and anti-tailgating technology. This sort of technology has been available for decades. It’s called using your eyes and brain and thinking about your driving. In introducing such technology, aren’t we sending the message that it is OK to get behind the wheel without engaging your brain? I’d say that anyone who feels they need such technology should probably not be driving. Rod asks: ‘‘Just how safe can we get?’’ The answer is that the roads will never be safe until attention is focused on the most dangerous aspect of any vehicle, i.e. the idiot behind the wheel. Car manufacturers’ insistence on removing the onus from the driver to think is a retrograde and dangerous policy. Safer cars = dumber drivers. David Jones / via email

Students have swapped a classroom for a bowling rink in an initiative at Peter Lalor Vocational College. The school has won a NAB Schools First Program $15,000 grant to introduce a ‘‘positive education’’ program in partnership with Victoria University. As part of the program, the students enjoy ‘‘happiness Tuesdays’’ where they do things that make them happy such as bowling, art, cooking, sport or jewellery making. The program is designed to improve academic achievement, attendance and negative attitudes towards school. Assistant principal Kath Kenny said the positive education program helped students to identify their top character strengths and ways to approach life with an optimistic rather than pessimistic attitude.

Get on board I am filled with hope for the students I work with given the federal government’s

announcement of education funding reform. As a teacher working in an alternative setting in the northern suburbs with at-risk students, the increase in funding would mean that schools I work with would be able to support these students more effectively. Increased funding would allow these students to access services and would give schools the ability to provide assistance within the classroom for our most needy students. I urge the premier, Mr Baillieu, to bring Victoria on board with education reform. Our students need it now! Daniel Cohen / via email

‘‘Then a few months later I got a call from mum saying Suzie was back in hospital; in palliative care with a brain tumour.’’ He flew to Brisbane and sat by her side. One by one, other brothers and sisters arrived. Then more bad news. ‘‘The doctors told us that it had gone from one brain tumour to 19 in three days and it wouldn’t be long,’’ he says. ‘‘She hung on, she amazed them; there was still one brother left to come.’’ When the last brother arrived, Suzanne spent time sharing her life with them. ‘‘Suzie was over the moon. It was what she wanted but never thought was possible. She saw us all together again and so did our mum,’’ he says. ‘‘Suzie had amazing clarity, and then at other times . . . ’’ Kronk spent three weeks with his sister until she died on September 22 last year. ‘‘I have watched two sisters die – my younger sister was 17 and I was 20 when she died in my arms from an asthma attack,’’ he says. ‘‘Some people may say I was cheated to have so little time with Suzie, but I look on the positive. We

could have gone the rest of our lives without catching up and we finally did see each other.’’ Kronk is honouring his sister by fund-raising throughout October for the charity, Challenge, supporting kids with cancer.‘‘My partner’s son, Jamie, is 14 and has leukaemia and luckily is in remission,’’ he says. ‘‘Cancer is heartbreaking but with adults at

least they’ve had a chance to live their lives, but kids haven’t lived at all.’’ Kronk will hold numerous fund-raising events this month, including having a design shaved into his hair, a silent auction, car boot sale and various fitness events at his workplace, One Health and Fitness at South Morang. ■ Details: call 9436 6122.

T took almost 40 years for Lynden Kronk to reunite with his older sister – then only a matter of months to lose her forever. Now the South Morang personal trainer is raising money to help children with cancer in memory of his sister Suzanne Baldwin, who died last year aged 52. Mr Kronk was four when his parents’ marriage broke down and their seven children were split up. ‘‘I don’t have a lot of memories of her then. She was the oldest, and about 10 years older than me,’’ he says. But last year his mother contacted him to say Suzanne had lung cancer and a few months to live, so he rushed to Queensland to be with her. Then their hopes were raised. ‘‘She was given the all-clear. Instead of a couple of months to live, she was in remission and told she would live five or six years,’’ he says. There was a lot of catching up to do, but now the brother and sister had time to get to know each other and Kronk returned to Melbourne to plan his next trip to see her.

COVERSTORY

A Bunch of

do-gooders

A consumer movement helping businesses go green is taking root in Melbourne. By Linley Wilkie

ext time you pop into your local cafe or corner shop, don’t be alarmed to find a crowd of people browsing the shelves or buying coffees... dressed as carrots. You’ve probably stumbled across another carrotmob. A close relative of smart mobs (when a crowd gathers to advocate for a common cause), flash mobs (when a crowd gathers for a trivial, yet entertaining performance) and the most recent addition to the family, cash mobs (when a crowd gathers at a small business and spends up big), carrotmobs are all about the environment. Businesses are encouraged to improve their sustainable business practices by having a carrot dangled in front of

them in the form of a cash-wielding mob. Dressing up as the vegetable is entirely optional. The first carrotmob was in San Francisco in 2008. Consumer activist Brent Schulkin visited 23 convenience stores and promised to bring a mob of customers to whichever business was willing to reinvest the largest sum into energy-saving measures. Hundreds of people descended on the winning business, spending more than $9000 in one visit, and the business used nearly a quarter of the revenue to install a greener lighting system. Schulkin likens the carrotmob vibe to a party. “The mobbers are happy, the business is happy [and] that’s what makes this model exciting,” he says. “Some people really

want more influence in the world, [which is] often difficult to achieve on your own, but can be easily achieved as part of a mob.” The idea took root around the world, with hundreds of carrotmobs cropping up everywhere from Mexico City to Bangkok – and in late 2010, Brunswick West. Albion Budget Supermarket was carrotmobbed by more than 100 shoppers, who bought groceries they needed anyway (the movement doesn’t encourage unnecessary consumerism). Owner Medhat Ghaly then used the $700 raised to invest in energy-efficient light bulbs, matching it with $700 of his own money to convert the shop’s entire lighting system. This was the second of five Melbourne carrotmobs

STEVE LIGHTFOO T

Thornbury’s Helen Barclay has been involved in. The 27-year-old co-founded Carrotmob Melbourne with Ying Hu after stumbling across the not-forprofit, grassroots organisation through a separate social movement. “I wanted to get involved in the community from a sustainability perspective and this was bringing together business with sustainability; it completely married what I’m passionate about,” says Barclay, a business operations manager at Cesar, which undertakes research and consultation for Australia’s wildlife conservation and agricultural sector. Despite their best efforts, Barclay and fellow Carrotmob Melbourne campaign organiser Ashlee Brady work with limited resources and the number of carrotmobs held in Melbourne since it began in April 2010 can be counted on one hand. The pair is now keen n to spread the word and encourage like-minded people to o carrotmob other Melbourne businesses. Brady came on board for the third carrotmob, contacting Barclay after reading about Carrotmob Melbourne in a magazine. “It appealed because of its simplicity,” the economics student says. “It doesn’t go against business practices and principals; it harnesses the he fact that business responds to financial incentives and harnesses that for good rather than profits alone.” In May, a marketing lecturer at Melbourne Universityy posted a message on the Carrotmob Melbourne website,, suggesting they organise a carrotmob on campus with his is students acting as the “mob”. “Having his class as the basis for the mob meant it could be fast-tracked,” Brady y says. She approached three businesses at the university, gathered ideas for improving their energy practices, and pitched them to the marketing class, which voted on the winning business, Crepes a la Carte. The student owners of this tiny crepe stand were eager to develop Australia’s first biodegradable crepe cone and after about 200 people chowed down crepess for two hours, they had raised more than half the money ney needed to develop a prototype. “What I noticed mostly y was the enthusiasm of academic and office staff within the he university,” Brady says. “The idea of using carrotmobs for profit does speak to a variety of age groups.” The most recent carrotmob was in June at Elgin Street’s t’s Cafe Lua. Impressed by the October 2011 mob at Federation ation Square’s Il Pomodoro (where staff pledged to plough profi ofits into an on-site herb garden), the City of Melbourne joined ed forces with Carrotmob Melbourne to run the Carlton Carrotmob Challenge. It’s a chance for people to support change by exercising their spending power, says City of Melbourne’s manager of sustainability, Krista Milne. “By supporting the mob movement, local government can coordinate bringing together those like-minded members of the community to harness their collective voice to create positive change.” The council supported five Carlton businesses, including Cafe Lua, to undergo an environmental assessment, which identified ways each business could lessen its environmental impact. “Part of what’s important to us is also educating the businesses,” Barclay says. “If they didn’t win the carrotmob, they still got to learn what they could do to reduce their impact on the environment.” Cafe Lua owner Angus Giles wasn’t familiar with the carrotmob movement, but having already introduced sustainable elements into his business, such as recycling coffee grounds and selling reusable KeepCups, thought it was another wise move. “Being rewarded for environmental practices that are sensible and conserve the environment sets a leadership agenda,” he says. “I think it’s the beginning of a consumer-driven wave, where you actually bless people with your hip pocket for the things they’re doing in a small way. It’s a really nice, simple idea and it’s effective.”

Left: Helen Barclay, co-founder of Carrotmob Melbourne Below: Cafe Lua owner Angus Giles Bottom: The first ever Melbourne Carrotmob

Cafe Lua promoted that for one week, 50 cents from every coffee sold would go towards the installation of solar panels. When the $1000 raised wasn’t enough to cover the cost, Giles instead spent the money replacing their decrepit air-conditioner with a new, energy-efficient model. “You don’t have to do much to express your environmental concern economically,” Giles says. “It’s customer power – instead of boycotting, you’re blessing. I’d definitely encourage other businesses to do it.” Both Barclay and Brady echo that sentiment. “Our goal is to get more people running carrotmobs in Melbourne – we just want to be a body that people can come to if they want advice,” Barclay says. Taking part is as simple as turning up at a carrotmob with your wallet. Says Brady: “We’ve never wanted it to be a hierarchical thing that just we organised. The point of a carrotmob is anyone can do it. If you’re involved in your community and think that businesses might respond to this, then have a chat to them. Speak to people in the council, or the local pub, or milk bar and see if they’re interested. The more mobs we have, the better each one is.” ■ Details: visit carrotmobmelbourne.wordpress.com.

What is a carrotmob? The carrotmob is based on the idea of donkey owners encouraging their animals to continue working by using a carrot to reward the animal and a stick to punish it. Instead of a boycott, where customers stop buying particular products or services, carrotmobs stage a buycott – a temporary campaign to buy products or services.

Leading the charge Two teens clean up on the equestrian circuit. By Daniel Paproth

“Nothing is ever won or lost. You can always get better scores and better yourself and the horse. It takes a while to build up a really good relationship with the horse and it’s so rewarding because you spend so much time working on one thing.”

Hannah agrees. “I’ve only had Anton for four months but now we are really starting to work together. We’re aiming to compete at an international level by the end of the year. I enjoy it so much and would like to go as far as I can with it.” ■

riding when she was seven. “Dad always promised me when we moved to Australia I could get a horse,” she says. Coach Virginia Creed says the pair have exceeded everyone’s expectations. “I think they are doing an amazing job. “They’re competing at the highest level of interschool competition, in open competitions, amateur and professional, and they’re holding their own in that company. They’re doing exceptionally well.” Dressage, Creed explains, is all about the “training of the horse to make it nicer to ride and more obedient”. “That comes as a result of training and improving the horse’s way of going as well as its physical looks. It takes four to five years to train a horse to perform at an Olympic level.” Michaela, whose horse is named Squiggle, says a rider’s work is never done. “I love it because you’re never finished, there’s always another challenge to work on,” she says.

Two Ivanhoe Grammar students, Michaela Bray, 14, (pictured left) and Hannah Bathen, 15, (right) have dominated competition closer to home in all ages recently. They were the top two dressage riders at the Victorian Interschool Championships in July and both are members of the Young Victorian Rider Dressage Squad. They also regularly placed in events during the Whittlesea and Plenty Valley Dressage Club winter series. Hannah won the 2012 Victorian Dressage Club Medium trophy against riders of all ages. The two both go to Ivanhoe Grammar’s Plenty Campus and say equestrian is in their blood. “My whole family is into horses. I was pretty much born on one,” says Michaela. “I’ve been riding horses ever since I can remember.” Hannah, who was born in Germany, started

You’re terrible, Muriel

book

★★★★ FIRE IN THE SEA ★★★ MENTAL Where: On general release When: October 4

Toni Collette misses the magic of the film that made her a star, writes Kathryn Kernohan lmost 20 years after its release, Muriel’s Wedding remains one of the most successful and most loved Australian films of all time. So expectations are high for Mental, the long-awaited reunion between Muriel writer/director P.J. Hogan and star Toni Collette. While it’s a reasonably entertaining feature, unfortunately it’s a long way short of the bona fide classic of Muriel. Shirley (Rebecca Gibney) is suffering a mental breakdown trying to raise five unruly daughters on her own. Her husband, Barry (Anthony LaPaglia), is an absent philanderer. The final straw comes when Shirley orders truckloads of furniture and whitegoods to her door, exclaiming to her perplexed neighbours that her husband had a big win on Wheel of Fortune. Worried about his impending

A

election campaign, Barry ships his wife off to psychiatric care and plucks stranger Shaz (Collette) from the street to be his daughters’ live-in nanny. Anybody who has seen Collette’s excellent series United States of Tara will feel they recognise Shaz, a bong-smoking, knifewielding unhinged woman. She makes it her mission to help Shirley’s five girls – led by eldest Coral (impressive newcomer Lily Sullivan) – all of whom claim to be suffering their own mental illnesses. So begins a series of strange, darkly comic set pieces as Shaz attempts to expose the residents of pristine coastal town Dolphin Heads (Porpoise Spit, anyone?) for what they really are, and tries to convince the girls that it’s the ones with the perfectly manicured

lawns and expensive white leather couches who are strange. Things take a bizarre twist in the second half as shark hunter Trevor (Liev Schreiber), seen only fleetingly earlier in the film as Coral’s employer at an amusement park, is revealed to share a deep history with Shaz. But will the girls get their mother back, and is Shaz all she is cracked up to be? There are some enjoyable cameos from the likes of Deborah Mailman and Rob Carlton, and the cinematography is superb. But a couple of lowbrow gross-out gags feel out of place and the last 45 minutes are extremely disjointed. Underwhelming and patchy, Mental isn’t a complete letdown but its bad points vastly outweigh its good.

Poh’s soul food tv

BY KATHRYN KERNOHAN

asterChef Australia has spawned a lot of stars, but none has retained more credibility than Poh Ling Yeow. The Malaysianborn, Adelaide-based painter – who finished runner-up in the first season of the show in 2009 – has quietly forged a successful postMasterChef career in food. Unlike some of her contemporaries, Yeow hasn’t signed on to appear in ads for paper towels or pasta sauce, or turned up on morning TV to cook a roast. In fact, one of the few times she has appeared on commercial TV was in the underwhelming MasterChef All Stars. Instead Yeow has fronted the charming Poh’s Kitchen on ABC since 2010. Now in its third season, it hasn’t been a ratings bonanza but it has established a loyal audience. The show is a delight. Yeow’s enthusiasm is infectious and she has introduced viewers to

M

some of the best chefs and cooking destinations across the country. In her latest six-part series, Poh’s Kitchen Lends a Hand, the celebrity chef willingly jumps out of her comfort zone. Yeow isn’t the first famous foodie to use her profile for good – just look at Jamie Oliver and Gordon Ramsay – but for an Australian program, this may be a first. In each episode, Yeow uses food and cooking to tell the stories of a group, such as the disadvantaged young people at Melbourne social enterprise STREAT or a team of workers with disabilities in Adelaide. The people she meets are willing to share their experiences with her on camera, and food is the catalyst for things to change or improve. The show is never exploitative, there’s no melodramatic music and everything is done with class and respect. Yeow’s people skills, it seems, are as good as her cooking skills. Next week, Yeow roughs it for a week in remote South Australia, catering for 11 troubled teenage girls. It’s part of Operation Flinders, a

By Myke Bartlett / Text Publishing Fire in the Sea, Myke Bartlett’s assured young adult debut, scooped last year’s Text prize for the category, and it’s not difficult to see why it stood out. Set in his home town of Perth, both the sense of place and his believably spunky cast of teen heroes are convincing. It wastes no time getting started. An eerie, Jaws-like near-miss in the deep waters of Cottesloe Beach is immediately followed by a terrifying twin monster strike on a strange old man. His startled, half-mumbled warning sparks an exciting quest that plunges Bartlett’s protagonists, led by orphaned teenager Sadie, into a surreal and at times terrifying world of mythical gods and monsters. Sadie, who struggles to rein in her feisty ways, is the linchpin, while her unexpected inheritance of a spooky old house brings the mysterious Jake to her door, a young man who appears to carry the weight of centuries on his shoulders. Armed with a rucksack and food supplied, Yeow treks more than 100 kilometres through the northern Flinders Ranges, sleeps under the stars and forms some genuine, not-just-for-TV bonds. It’s truly great TV without a plug for pasta sauce in sight. ABC1, Tuesday, 8pm

Sun Matador Records Sun isn’t your typical 2012 female indie-pop-rock record. For starters, the legendary Iggy Pop provides guest vocals and some of the lyrics deal with the plight of the Third World. The cover image of Ms Power (aka Chan Marshall) set against a violet backdrop was taken 20 years ago, and sets the ’80s tone for what is one of the most refreshing albums of the year. Stung by the break-up of a longterm relationship, Marshall has crafted a vital album that dabbles in electronica and indie rock. Lead single Ruin is an irresistible, rollicking piano number. The intro of Cherokee recalls the moody guitar of early U2 before giving way to sultry vocals and a skittery chorus. Nothin’ But Time, the Iggy Pop collaboration, is an 11-minute slow-burn epic that never outstays its welcome. The sweet piano ode to New York, Manhattan, is another highlight on an album that barely has any missteps. — Daniel Paproth

sk a wine lover to name a wine region close to Melbourne and I bet you a bottle of wine that Geelong is not their first answer. Or even their second. For a region with a current slew of acclaimed wineries and such a rich history – its first vines were planted in the 1860s and it quickly became the most significant wine region in the country before disease took hold of Australia’s vineyards – Geelong flies under the radar. Producers such as Bannockburn and By Farr are spoken about in revered terms, while a swathe of young producers, such as Lethbridge, Oakdene and Paradise IV are building on reputations and making a mark on the national wine scene. All up, there are 60 wineries and 40 cellar doors in Geelong that pour their wines to visitors on a regular basis. Every one of Geelong’s wineries is family owned and, unlike its neighbours in the Yarra Valley and Mornington Peninsula, there are no corporate wineries with their big marketing budgets to fly the region’s flag. While the region may be at a slight marketing disadvantage, the

cellar door visitor isn’t – more often than not, you’ll find the winemaker and owner pouring the wines. A reason for Geelong’s low profile may also lie in its size. The Yarra Valley and the Mornington Peninsula are relatively small regions and it’s easy to get a feel for what they do on a day trip. By comparison, Geelong is huge. It’s just under an hour’s drive to get from Brown Magpie Wines on the Surf Coast to Del Surf Coast Stretching from Waurn Ponds to the Otways, the Surf Coast takes in a wide range of scenery and terroir. Wolseley Wines hosts regular gigs at its cellar door and is well worth a visit. In the past year the winery has hosted Chris Wilson, Lisa Miller and the Painters and Dockers. Moorabool Valley A large sub-region that spans Werribee to Anakie, there’s a wide range of soil profiles and aspects that produce varied styles of wines. A number of Moorabool’s

Rios winery at Anakie in the Moorabool Valley. Those distances make touring Geelong a little harder than most regions, so when visiting the trick is to base yourself in a sub-region for the day and make repeat visits. Best known for chardonnay and pinot noir, Geelong is no one-trick pony, with different climates in its sub-regions helping to produce a wide range of wine styles. For more wine reviews, visit theweeklyreview.com.au/wine cellar doors open only once a month, so check winegeelong.com.au for details. Clyde Park is open seven days a week, and on weekends it plays host to atmospheric long lunches. Bellarine Peninsula Rolling hills and bay views are common in what is Geelong’s youngest sub-region. Cooling seaside breezes, coupled with rich loam soils over a base of limestone, provide a good platform for top-end pinot noir, syrah and chardonnay.

★★★★★ Bannockburn Sauvignon Blanc 2011 (Geelong) $29; 13.5% Sauvignon blanc is so often one-dimensional and lacking in personality. By comparison, this complex wine is positively schizophrenic. There’s 10 per cent riesling blended in and the sauvignon blanc was fermented with wild yeasts in a mix of French oak and Italian acacia barrels. Gunsmoke, passionfruit and snow pea aromas lead to intense citrus and mineral flavours that fan out across the tongue to include ripe tropical fruits. It’s smooth, with energetic acidity and a drying grip and another burst of flavour on exit. Food match Grilled chicken with spring vegetable stew 5★ Outstanding 4★ Really good 3★ Good

MOTORING

Net gains Selling you car online? Read these tips first

ROD EASDOWN BEHIND THE WHEEL

Y

ou probably know how to prepare your car for sale, but the internet has changed things. One of the most important things you can do these days is get plenty of good photographs of your car. Newspaper classifieds don’t include photographs because they’d be too expensive, but every internet ad has a photo or two. Make your photographs stand out and you’ll get the inside running. Get the car serviced and fix the

problems. Now have it professionally detailed. It costs a few hundred dollars but it’s worth every cent; it makes the body and the interior look new. Detailers get the gross-out detritus out of the cup holders and map pockets, stuff you miss. They also make the car smell good. Now get your camera. Think about the background. A park is good, your driveway is not. Position the car so it’s getting the best light, without any shadows across it. Turn the steering wheel so the front wheels have a bit of attitude. Take the photograph to show the front three-quarters; that is, the front and side of the car. Here’s the important bit. Don’t take the picture standing up. Lie down ahead of the car and shoot from near ground level. You’ll be amazed just how good your car looks from down there, and how much better it will look than all those other photographs around it. Shot

low, a completely conventional Corolla looks good. Photograph every wheel to show that they haven’t been damaged by kerb scrapes. These shots also show that the tyres have plenty of life left. Photograph the body from every angle. Get shots of the interior to illustrate its condition (make sure the steering wheel is straight), and take close-ups of any special features the car may have, such as navigation or a great stereo. If the rear seats fold, take pictures of them both folded and in place. Photograph the boot and the spare wheel. You won’t get all these in the ad but you can post them on a Facebook page or a website that buyers can access, giving them the web address when they call. You can also post a service history of the car on the page with a more detailed description than you can get in the initial ad.

Things you didn’t know about motoring The longest section of straight road in Australia is on the Nullarbor between Balladonia and Caiguna. It goes for 146.6 kilometres without a turn.

Include the year of manufacture, the date of purchase, the distance travelled (photograph the speedo) and the car’s history. Describe the person who has been driving it and how the car has been treated. Here’s another thing about the internet. People who use it tend to expect instant results. When they call, respond immediately and be at their beck and call. They’ll be looking at your car along with others and if you’re fastest off the mark, you’re more likely to get the sale. ■

Boulevard of dreams It’s resort living without ever leaving home

STEPHEN A RUSSELL PROPERTY WRITER structured landscaped garden in the curve of a sweeping driveway announces this family residence, just across the road from an enticing nature reserve with swaying gum trees and reed-clustered creek. The location is ideal, with Laurimar shopping centre nearby and schools just down the road. But it’s not just location, location, location here. The interior of this owner-built property will blow you away too. A broad, dark hardwood hall forms the house’s spine, running from front door to rear patio doors, which precede the fabulous entertaining backyard and pool.

The luxurious main bedroom with thick charcoal carpet sits just to your left through double doors. Five tall windows overlook the lush parkland across the street, while a further two to the far side frame the bed, ensuring plenty of natural light. On the near wall, a grand gas fire means you’ll be cosy as you like when winter rolls around again. There’s so much room in here you can set up your own private lounge, and the walk-in wardrobe is cleverly arrayed for his and hers. The sparkling en suite beyond features a stylish pale wood vanity topped with two pristine white ceramic bowls, while the roomy walk-in shower has two heads so you don’t have to fight to get ready in the morning. Across the hallway, direct access to the double garage offers convenience, while a sprawling open-plan formal lounge sits just past the main bedroom, again with lush carpet. Diagonally opposite, a possible formal dining room with polished timber floorboards is used

by the current owners as a swish, roomy study, with a low wall peeping through to the family room next door. This is another gorgeous space, with bifold doors throwing open on to a magnificent covered alfresco dining area. A Canterbury Cannon gas fire is perched in one corner, while another cutaway wall, this time high up, adds a cool design flourish. On the other side of this wall is a big rumpus or theatre room, facing on to a second covered entertaining area. The magnificent pale, flecked stone-topped kitchen sits across the way, literally at the heart of the house, overlooking a large meals area, perfect for family dining. An industrial-sized Blanco oven impresses, as does a large corner pantry and contemporary cream cabinetry. The remaining bedrooms sit off to the left of this sprawling living area, along the eastern edge of house. Step into this secondary hall and you’ll find a good-sized bedroom with built-in wardrobes alongside the central

bathroom, finished in pale honey and cream tones features a tiled bath and separate shower. Beside it are are a powder room, linen closet and laundry with access to the side yard and lock-up shed. Two further bedrooms are positioned to the rear, each with built-in wardrobes and great views of the backyard. One allows direct access out to the pool via patio doors. The backyard is a dream, with attractive decked areas and a huge, welcoming pool area surrounded by pale yellow stone. A large spa, timber-screened for privacy, sits nearby, with a lawn area to the left and paved areas providing contrast. On the right-hand side of the house, a landscaped area leads back to the double garage. This property is all set up, come rain, hail or glorious summer shine. All you have to do is move in to make the most of what life offers. ■
