“Being in opposition won’t stop me continuing to make sure this community has a voice,” she told the Weekly. Australia’s first Greek-born female parliamentarian (pictured) took the seat named after former Labor

My mother experiences painful intestinal blockages as a result of major surgery. One night, in excruciating pain, she waited four hours for an ambulance, which took her to Sunshine Hospital about 4am.

I arrived to find her lying across chairs in the busy waiting area clutching a vomit bag. There would be a seven-hour wait before anyone would assess her.

I took her home.

Deadly u-Turns must stop: council

Hume councillors are calling for a crackdown on drivers doing illegal U-turns on Sunbury Road near Melbourne Airport.

Councillor Jack Medcraft raised the issue at the council meeting on Monday last week, and fellow councillors echoed his calls for a safety push.

Cr Medcraft said he was concerned that people could lose their lives because some drivers are not following the road rules.

He called on the council to write to police and ask them to monitor the situation and issue fines. “I think this situation has become critical,” he said.

“Cr [Jack] Ogilvie and myself happened to see a car stop on the road at the back of the airport one night. It’s a 100km/h zone and [the car stopped] in the middle of the traffic … the car behind just missed it. It stopped to do a U-turn to park on the dirt area where the old dam was.”

Cr Medcraft said drivers were trying to find free parking near the airport, as there had been a crackdown on people parking along the Tullamarine Freeway.

Cr Ogilvie said the council needed to take it one step further and ask VicRoads to install barriers. He said more needed to be done than

New Epping CFA captain Rob Saitta is ready to tackle the big challenges as the brigade prepares for the coming fire season.

Mr Saitta has replaced Heath Kenzie, who had been captain for six years.

Mr Saitta first joined the Epping brigade in 1994 and has been an active member since then.

He said one of the biggest challenges he faced was the rapid growth in Epping and the surrounding areas.

grass fires, which isn’t the case, with Epping looking after all types of emergencies and [it] has a rescue [team] as well.

“Last financial year we had 425 call outs which is the most we have ever been to.

“The rapid residential and business development growth in the area, which includes multilevel apartment complexes and the overall growth in the Whittlesea council boundary, mean we are going to more jobs.

“The increased number of people moving into the area who have English as a second language is also something we have to focus on.”

Mr Saitta said a fire in February that burnt 2040 hectares meant people were now more aware of how close fires could come to houses.

“That area has never burnt in the 70 years the brigade has been going and [it] was the biggest grass fire Epping has seen.’’

He said he would continue building on the partnerships developed by the brigade within the community, especially with kindergartens and schools.

“The Epping Secondary College actually has a youth crew program which teaches the students about emergency services at the Epping fire brigade. state sitting pretty for asian trade Premier Denis Napthine headed to Melbourne’s manufacturing north last week to outline the benefits of the state government’s recent “super trade mission” to south-east Asia.

Speaking at the Thomastown headquarters of Australia’s largest almond grower and processor, Select Harvests, Dr Napthine said more than 319 jobs and $144 million in economic benefits were expected to flow in the next two years as a direct result of the trade mission.

Launching an initial report into the mission, he described the visit by about 3000 business people along with government representatives as “a tremendous boost” for Victoria’s trade relationship with south-east Asia.

“The consuming class in south-east Asia is predicted to increase exponentially over the next 15 years and Victoria is well placed to provide the goods and services required to support this growth,” Dr Napthine said.

he poultry people are crying foul, some of the alpaca folk believe they are being fleeced and the woodchoppers very nearly got the axe.

Just what is going on with the Royal Melbourne Show?

What was to have been a fairly predictable preview of the annual blue-ribbon event this year took an unexpected turn at the poultry pavilion.

“What chook competition?” president of the Footscray and District Poultry Club and Poultry Stud Breeders and Exhibitors Victoria director Jack Pavey demanded.

“There will be no poultry competition at the Royal this year. We have been given the boot big time and our pavilion has been taken over by MasterChef.”

The Victorian government offered attractive production rebates and incentives to lure Shine Australia – the makers of the Channel Ten cooking game show – from Sydney to Melbourne including, evidently, the uninterrupted four-year use of the renovated art deco-style poultry pavilion.

“The first inkling I had was when people came through the pavilion and started to measure it up,” Pavey reveals. “When they said MasterChef was coming in, I realised our goose was cooked.”

“The Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria (RASV) never even came out and told us straight up,” he says with a shake of the head.

Pavey believes the move to evict the poultry in favour of MasterChef reflects the Royal Melbourne Show management’s aversion to “messy animals” and agricultural pursuits they see as loss-making.

“They have wanted us out for years because they don’t believe we are an asset to the Royal,” Pavey claims.

“They complain about the costs of running the poultry pavilion, but what they don’t appreciate is that 85-90 per cent of people who come through the show come through the poultry.

“People love to see the chooks.

“This was our blue-ribbon event and the shop window to our hobby which let us put our birds before the public so we could promote our clubs and get new people interested.

“It’s 150 years of heritage gone. It’s more a fair than an agricultural show.”

Pavey dismissed the RASV’s rescheduling of the Royal Melbourne poultry competition to June as a “Clayton’s Royal”.

“They didn’t publicise it one bit because they didn’t really want the public to know there will only be 50 chickens in a pen at the show this year in the Paddock to Plate display.”

It is not only the feathered exhibits that will be missing. The number of alpacas at the show will also be greatly reduced, with competition limited to a paraders’ event on Thursday, September 26.

The traditional fleece judging and halter judging were held earlier in the year at the request of the alpaca growers themselves because show dates clashed with an international breeders’ conference in New Zealand.

committee has now recommended the main judging also be held in winter in future years because, in the words of the committee chairman Russell Dawe, “halter judging isn’t really a wonderful spectator sport”.

The reality is the number of alpacas on exhibit at Royal Melbourne has dwindled considerably in recent years, largely due to the entry fees the RASV charges breeders.

It costs $80 a head for a non-RAS member to enter an alpaca in the show compared to $50 for sheep, $125 for cattle and $38 for goats.

New Gisborne breeder and secretary of the Australian Alpaca Association’s Victorian Central Region, Heather Burn of Breenburn Alpacas, said the cost was a major disincentive for growers.

“The prices for entries have become a bit ridiculous if you do a comparison of the other livestock and other shows. It seems to me like the RASV are pricing breeders out,” she says. “As a breeder of an animal that has really only been in Australia for 20 or 30 years it is disappointing that they are not doing things to really help us promote our animals.

“Sydney Royal (entry fees $45 per alpaca for non-RAS member) attracts a massive amount of animals and many members describe it as a good old-fashioned show.”

The cost of entries is also an issue with the woodchoppers, with the axe hanging over the crowd-favourite competition this year.

A member of the well-known Romsey-Lancefieldbased wood chopping clan Janet Meyer indicated a lot of woodchoppers held off entering Royal Melbourne this year in protest at escalating fees and last-minute changes to the program in 2012.

Meyer, who is the mother of Australian junior champion Brayden Meyer and herself a competitor, said there were “a lot of woodchoppers not happy and it just gets more and more expensive”.

“My son’s entries alone cost $800 this year, and that is with an RAS membership.

“For myself there is no point even taking a membership – it would cost more than I would save because there are so few events for women. It is the worst Royal for women.

“It used to be one of the best shows, but the atmosphere is just not there any more.

“And they are all over the shop. First they cut it back to five days this year, then they sent out a letter saying they had cancelled, and by the time we got that in the mail it was back on for 10 days. It was really only after the media got onto it they put it back on.

“It almost feels like they don’t want us there.”

“Melbourne does seem to be moving away from traditional agricultural pursuits,” Grant Waterman, chairman of the Federal Council of Agricultural Societies, believes.

“It seems to me a great pity because it was a great place for city people and country people to mix and for city people to see what country people are all about.

“I think city people do come to see cattle, sheep, chooks and pigs. If you look at Royal Adelaide show, it’s full of country stuff and it has the second-biggest gate behind Sydney and the entry price isn’t as high as the Melbourne show.”

police target worst offenders Victoria Police has announced a manhunt for some of the state’s top high-risk offenders. Encompassing areas including Broadmeadows, the Critical Incident Response Team will turn up the heat on priority offenders who are actively avoiding arrest or have a history of violent behaviour.

The site of the Smorgy’s restaurant in Bundoora that went up in flames earlier this month will be redeveloped into a major multitower residential complex.

The Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal has found in favour of developer Park Rise Australia, which had appealed against Darebin council’s rejection of its application last year.

The decision was made just days before the derelict restaurant on Plenty Road burnt down in suspicious circumstances on September 8.

The fire produced thick plumes of smoke.

Strong winds kept Metropolitan Fire Brigade officers at bay, with even the MFB’s new $30,000 flying drone deemed unsuitable to be sent in to tackle the blaze.

Remains of the building were demolished last week.

Detective Senior Constable Patrick Grelis said police were pursuing several lines of inquiry, including a Facebook post by a person claiming responsibility.

On September 5, VCAT followed up its interim order from earlier this year by approving revised plans that include 378 apartments across six multistorey towers.

The nursery has been part of the Craigieburn community for 33 years and Ms Briedis’ passion for gardening, and her green thumbs, have been the drivers of many workshops at the local library in that time.

She said the Green Day programs, a Plants Plus initiative, provided pupils with the tools to cultivate green areas around their grounds, to grow their own vegetables and to learn the basics of horticulture. \ HG

Round-up TAC CUP Calder Cannons’ season is over following a 12-point defeat to Dandenong Stingrays in Saturday’s preliminary final at Princes Park.

Calder led by 15 points at three-quarter time but was overrun by seven last-quarter Dandenong goals.

The 16.12 (108) to 14.12 (96) result means Dandenong takes on Eastern Ranges in the grand final this Sunday.

The scores were level at quarter-time before Calder kicked three goals to one in the second term to open a 13-point lead at the long break.

Dandenong closed the gap in the third quarter but Calder steadied as the teams exchanged four goals each.

Greenvale’s back-to-back flags in Essendon District Football League premier division came with a 14-point win against Aberfeldie on Saturday built more on substance than style.

Rather than remember the 12.14 (86) to 10.12 (72) win for goals or marks as a signature highlight, it was three critical run-down tackles that defined Greenvale’s performance.

The momentum shifts caused by Greenvale players catching their Aberfeldie opponents holding the ball proved decisive in a final quarter where the Two Blues were held to just one goal.

With Aberfeldie down by 13 and trying to drive forward with five minutes to go, Greenvale’s David Sardo caught Anthony Tipungwuti cold on the half back flank.

That was the 19-minute mark of the quarter and the Two Blues would not score again.

Two minutes later, Jaryd Thompson ran down Jacob Hislop in similar fashion to win a free kick within scoring range for the Jets.

Thompson opted to pass to advancing full back Daniel Campisano, who missed the set shot, but the time milked off the clock by the series of plays was enough to leave Aberfeldie with an impossible task.

It was fitting that Campisano would have the final say as the Greenvale full back swarmed Aberfeldie’s Tom Hislop and silenced the player who had run amok when the Two Blues comfortably beat the Jets in the qualifying final a fortnight earlier.

Earlier in the final quarter, Daniel Burns ran down Daniel Castellano in inspirational fashion to rattle the Aberfeldie forwards.

later as Castellano and Hislop conspired to miss after both made hurried decisions in front of goal under perceived pressure.

The miss allowed Greenvale to open a 20-point lead mid-way through the final term as the Jets’ next meaningful attack ended with Denis Bicer marking on the lead and handing off to ruckman Cameron Wight to lope unmanned into an open goal.

Aberfeldie led at half-time but relinquished the lead for the last time early in the third quarter when a clever Ben Clifton flick put Trent Shinners through on goal to kick truly from 40 metre on the run.

Josh Smith then held his nerve to goal after another Clifton assist. When Dean Smith kicked one at the 17-minute mark of the quarter the gap was 16 points.

Aberfeldie rallied with goals to Courtney Johns and then Jacob Hislop.

But Adam McPhee held his nerve after the three-quarter time siren with a 40 metre set shot that sent Greenvale to the huddle up by nine.

Dean Smith’s head-to-head battle with Zach O’Brien was a decisive win for Greenvale, while Eric Kuret won the Reg Rose medal as best afield. Campisano, McPhee, on-baller Samuel Zumbo and ruck-defender Simon Potter were other stand-outs.

Joe Gazzo kicked three goals for Greenvale.

Ben Clifton and Dean Smith kicked two each.

ADAM McPHEE It’s ironic [to win at Windy Hill] but it’s been a long time, first time since under-16 that I’ve been involved in a premiership.

I didn’t know what time of the [third] quarter it was. It [the kick after the siren] was a great moment to be involved in. To go back and execute the [set shot] routine, regardless of if it’s 90,000 in the crowd or whatever it was today, it was still just as important to me and the club.

To be a part of history for Greenvale, I’m just very proud to be a part of it.

ERIC KURET I think [Abefeldie] outplayed us in the middle in the first half. Thankfully, our defenders did well to help us out and in the second half we slowly turned it around.

Everyone played their role, we didn’t panic.

We needed to cut down their run and play one on one.

I’ve never played in back-to-back premierships. To win it in the style we have is amazing.

DANIEL CAMPISANO I knew it would be a tough one [Aberfeldie’s] Tom Hislop is a star, an absolute gun, but I just try to play my role.

If I didn’t get a kick I didn’t care, I just needed to shut him down.

I’ve been here two years for premierships in both .. coming here and winning two premierships, I couldn’t have even dreamed about it.

DEAN SMITH We knew that the last time we played [Aberfeldie] wasn’t good enough and we just made a pact to lift in all areas of the game. Fortunately, it came to fruition.

A key focus through the week was that we could create history today, so for me, missing out last year [with injury]... words can’t describe what it’s like today.

DAVID SARDO All year our focus has been on defensive pressure, no matter where it was on the ground. It’s been drilled into us from 10 months ago.
