s I sit here writing this, I’m wearing my A favourite new dress. It’s an inky blue little number with an A-line silhouette and cap sleeves. It’s cool, comfortable and perfect for just about every occasion. But best of all it puts a spring in my step whenever I wear it.

I know appearances aren’t the be-all and end-all – that it is what’s on the inside that counts – but let’s be honest: when we feel attractive or when someone compliments us on a new outfit, we walk just a little bit taller.

And isn’t that what fashion’s all about?

People might go on about the economic importance of the industry, or wax lyrical about the cultural and artistic significance of designer duds, but surely the bottom line of why fashion matters is simply that it makes us feel good.

As Melbourne’s fashion festival gets set to celebrate its 20th birthday next week, we join the party by shining a spotlight on the designers and clothes that make us look, and feel, great. Enjoy! ●

istory does not tell us what Elizabeth Thackery – reputedly the first white woman to set foot on Australian soil – was wearing when she jumped excitedly from a longboat and ran ashore at Botany Bay. But as a convict transported with little more than the clothes she stood up in, we can pretty safely assume her garb was threadbare, shapeless and more than a little rank.

The colony’s fashion story was not off to a promising start, with concern being more about a cat o’ nine tails than catwalks.

For more than 170 years we would remain the Western world’s wallflower, wearing big sister’s last-season hand-me-downs – always more Little Dorrit than Dior.

Not any more.

As the city prepares to strut her stuff for the Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival, it’s never been clearer Australian designers have freed themselves of the tyranny of distance and the muttering of “it’s terribly derivative, dahling” from behind the dark

glasses in the front row. Not since Jenny Kee plastered a koala across the pregnant belly of Princess Diana have Australian designers been so visible on the world stage.

Look, there’s Taylor Swift in Bec & Bridge, the famous Kates – Beckinsale and Middleton – in Zimmermann, Sarah Jessica Parker in Tome, Beyonce in Camilla, and Lady Gaga head to toe in Nixi Killick for a world tour.

But our fashion evolution – captured in the NGV’s brilliant 200 Years of Australian Fashion – begs the question: is there an Aussie aesthetic, a distinct cooee that distinguishes us from the rest of the world?

The Mother of the Mini, Prue Acton, believes we have a particular affinity for graphics and boldness of colour, while the Princess of Punk, Jenny Bannister, cites a willingness to break the rules.

Joe Saba, the man who taught us how to wear black, believes our relaxed Aussie lifestyle is a factor.

All these elements are part of the warp and weft of our unique fabric, but it doesn’t really explain why Australian designers are having more than a moment.

Mario-Luca Carlucci, one half of the wonderful Melbourne label Strateas.Carlucci, believes the answer lies in the fact that our designers are coming into their own as individuals. “The beauty of the now is that there is not an Australian aesthetic as such.

If you look at all the Australian designers making a name for themselves now, they are all so very different,” he says.

“But there is definitely a connectivity between designers that I would describe as an Australian way of doing things. That might be because of our culture and the fact our way of life here is so much different from what it is like to live in Paris or New York. A lot of our designers are willing to make the jump beyond our own shores to take a risk in terms of opening up their markets and sales.”

You absolutely can. People tend to have distinct stylistic preferences with pinot. If it’s a bigger style you like, say from Central Otago where you won’t often see change from $40, an elegant bottle from a top Victorian winery might never float your boat. When it comes to the best pinot in Burgundy, the saying goes “producer, producer, producer”. T

here’s an element of spectacle at Mammoth, where the bright space and tiered seating encourage people-watching and brunch envy. Chef Emma Jeffrey (who honed her skills at Fitzroy’s Hammer & Tong) takes risks, packs dishes with flavour and texture, and provides a menu that offers something for everyone. We found ourselves on a share table the first time around, which normally means hushed conversation and tucked elbows. Instead, Skinny Latte opposite us noticed me eyeing off his green chilli chicken between bites of strawberry salad and offered me a forkful. Suddenly, the term “share table” became entirely literal. I’m so glad, because our three dishes turned into seven – which was a great way to chip away at the prolific menu. Return trips yielded the welcome discovery of new additions: twice-cooked aromatic lamb ribs via butcher Peter Bouchier, a refreshed doughnut burger (now with crunchy chicken katsu) and duck breast Benedict with wholemeal crumpets, accompanied by the most un-boring veloute-y hollandaise, crispy sage, pickled shallots and bacon … winner! You can expect to wait 20-30 minutes for a table at weekends. ●

EATING \ Ramen. Holy moly! Where have you been all my life, ramen? Equal parts chicken soup for the soul and starving uni student’s two-minute noodles, this slurpy brew is so hot right now and popping up everywhere. I’m still on the lookout for Melbourne’s best, so I’ll keep you posted. (and if you know where it is, tag me!) ● COOKING \ Mango sorbet. I use the term “cooking” very loosely here. As tropical fruit season winds down, it’s time to stock up on squashy over-ripe mango, pineapple and kiwi fruit, freeze it down in batches and whiz it up in a powerful blender for the simplest, scrummiest sorbet you could ever ask for. ● WATCHING \ Cooked (Netflix, 2016) I properly inhaled Michael Pollan’s book of the same name when it came out in 2013, full of vivid imagery, fascinating characters and thought-provoking ideas … I couldn’t put it down. Luckily for us, Netflix lets you binge-watch to your heart’s content, with all four parts watchable and digestible.

Just make sure you cook dinner first. ● GOING TO O \ The Bank of Melbourne World’s Longest Lunch. Grand prix circuit, Guy Grossi, great company. This event sold out well before the date, so consider this a heads-up for next year. ●

Happily, he thinks Australian audiences are, these days, far more open to foreign films, even if it does mean having to read subtitles.

This year’s program contains an impressive 42 new titles and a restored version of Godard’s 1963 classic Contempt. Asked for a personal highlight, David selects Taj Mahal, a drama in which a French family are caught up in a terrorist attack on a hotel. It’s a film that has gained a particular, topical resonance because of the events in Paris last year.

hese days, there’s no shortage of foreign film fests, but the Alliance Francaise French Film Festival remains the biggest and, for many, the best of the bunch. Festival patron David Stratton (pictured) suggests this enduring success is down to the fact that, unlike most Hollywood fare, French films tend to be seriously unpredictable.

“I don’t think there are any boundaries,” David says. “Take a film like Truffaut’s first feature The 400 Blows. Many young men could recognise themselves in that film, because it was so personal to Truffaut, you could sense that honesty. You wouldn’t find that in a Hollywood film at all. It would be rewritten and revised to fit the parameters of Hollywood.”

David says he’s had a strong connection to French films since his late teens in London. It was the arrival of the 1960s New Wave, driven by directors such as Francois Truffaut and Jean-Luc Godard, that cemented his early love of cinema.

That’s just the five I know about and I have to assume there would have been more because one girl tried to jump off the Form One building and there were others at school who were so full of anger they punched out at whoever walked past them because, I don’t know, they maybe had a better suntan, and all of this might indicate things weren’t going so well for them.

Growing up free-range in the ’70s and ’80s, even when supervised by teachers and priests and those who presented themselves as the pillars of our community, was often a very frightening game of duck-duck-goose. And no, not every child got to win a prize.

Recently, two men I know from university have come out in public with their own stories of abuse within the school system. Never once were these life-altering events discussed back then, even when the armour came down after a night at the pub or a shared box of Yalumba.

We were raised to be as free as little birds, to roller-skate our way through childhood and to come home only when the street lights were on, but we were also expected to be seen and not heard, to do as we were told, to

respect our elders, to not complain or speak back, to go to our rooms and think about our behaviour and to eat the peas and the kidneys that made us gag. It’s not surprising that our teachers, authority figures, often even our parents, were the last people we thought we could turn to when we needed help.

here’s a lot of chatter these days about how different things are for our pampered and overprotected kids. I am not one to speak, because I love the warm blanket of white-bread nostalgia for the days of old, the world that on the surface seemed a lot simpler.

But, as we helicopter them to their after-school activities, hang around the school gate to escort them home safely and schedule play dates we would have made ourselves by standing outside a mate’s front door and yelling at them to come out, we do need to ask: is it safer for kids now than it was when I grew up?

We might have been free to ride our bikes around the beaches and down the river and wherever we wanted, and yes we didn’t drown or get run over, and yes we licked the cake spoon that had raw egg on it and we didn’t die, but bad things did happen. I have a long list.

Heartbreakingly, I write this knowing that five girls in my old school class of 20-odd have

If my kids don’t get to ride their bikes on their own around the neighbourhood, if I follow my nine-year-old 10 steps behind her as she walks with her friend to school, if I let them stick up for themselves and have a voice and to not cave when they’re wrongly accused, to find the words to express their feelings, hell, even to not share peanuts with other kids who might die if they eat them, I cannot help but feel the world they’re growing up in is a nicer one, and yes, a little bit safer. ● khall@theweeklyreview.com.au

and I can see why. It’s not too far into the class and already I can feel my hamstrings, quads, glutes, core and arms working hard. By the end I’m exhausted and high on endorphins.

The reality For anyone who doesn’t know, a kettlebell is a weight that looks a bit like a cannonball with a handle. They were used by Russian weightlifters 100 years ago and at Kettlefit, they’re it. Well, almost. Owner Jarrod Egan gathers the Kettlefit Strength class of 11 to run through the circuit of timed exercises, demonstrating each one. It’s important to use the right technique when working out with kettlebells, so each class has a second trainer to assist. Hani helps me choose the right kettlebell for each exercise (gauged by weight and size) and soon I’m sweating profusely as I swing, lift, clean (a swing using a kettlebell in one hand where the bell ends up between your forearm and bicep), squat and press.

ower Villa, certainly this inner suburb’s most recognisable house, has been waiting for its time to shine once again. On a prominent hilltop corner, its Italianate Victorian facade with a distinctive parapet tower commands attention – and that is exactly what it has received from one passionate restorer.

A man on a mission was determined to turn the best-known house in Ascot Vale into the best and most liveable house in Ascot Vale, and within two days of settlement he was knocking down walls and starting over from the ground up. Restumping, rewiring and replumbing was just the beginning.

Tower Villa has been given a 21st-century makeover that retains and restores the exceptional period qualities that it once had. The derelict tower has been brought back to life, and some of the dilapidated original features have been re-created. In the case of cornices, over-door features and corbels, this was a job worth doing. Decorative details are a highlight throughout; even the original dents in architraves and skirting boards tell a story.

Part of the bigger story of this house has also been honoured by the restoration. Italian immigrant Antonio Longo lived here in the 1950s, having turned his cobbling skills into the successful Aquila shoe business. The pizza oven he constructed, thought to be the first one in Melbourne, continues to fire out in the backyard next to the 60-year-old fig tree that he planted. Olive trees espaliered on a rough-trowel wall are a feature of the void that runs between the old and new sections of the house where huge glass sliders from the dining room create an al fresco space with this very European backdrop.

More hedonists’ retreat than family home, Tower Villa appeals to those who like to be surrounded by the ultimate in aesthetic beauty. Three large bedrooms add to the exclusive nature of the makeover; the huge main suite is an extravagance that has been designed as an indulgent refuge.

The material palette is the hero throughout and it is key to the overall luxurious effect. Japanned floorboards bring warmth to the neutral palette; American oak custom cabinetry features in the main bedroom dressing room that is fitted with a his-and-hers butler’s station; and Italian marble (Calacatta and Carrara) can be found throughout in tiling, benchtops and vanities. Marble is used to greatest effect in the living room floating fireplace chimney, where 360 degrees of exquisite veining is an aesthetic tour de force.

Gourmands in particular have been catered for with a high level of form and function. The rear open-plan living zone is where the quality fittings and fixtures reach an apex. A Paul Bocuse cast-iron double oven range, five fridges (including a prep fridge drawer, Vintec wine and cocktail fridges and a Zip Hydrotap), Franke basins and Italian tapware are some of the kit in this entertainment zone. An antipasto bar provides a primary gathering point for guests while the chef rules the range within chatting distance.
