Sheriff’s got a brand new toy for error. ‘‘It’s been through various levels of testing to make sure the technology is accurate.’’

In the past, sheriff’s officers had to manually enter number plates into a database to determine whether there were outstanding fines. ‘‘Now it’s just a matter of driving through a car park and if something gets picked up, they’ll stop either clamp it or provide other sanctions or provide a notice to the person involved,’’ Ms Ung said. ‘‘It’s just part of a plan to make the sheriff more efficient.’’

Sheriff’s officers will be patrolling suburbs in the next few months in marked cars.

Mr Facey said paying fines on time was the way to avoid more penalties. ‘‘The earlier you pay your fine, the less you pay and if you try dodging your fines, you will inevitably end up paying more.’’

THE Victorian Sheriff’s office has got stronger, better and faster, with new technology that can identify in seconds thousands of drivers who have fines outstanding.

The technology, known as Automatic Number Plate Recognition, was unveiled last week in Glen Waverley and will allow the sheriff’s office to read up to 2000 number plates in a second and compare them against a list of drivers. ‘‘When a number plate scan matches with a vehicle registration number on the outstanding list, the software tells the sheriff’s office they have a successful match,’’ Victorian Sheriff Brendan Facey said. ‘‘It then records the time, date, location and number plate.

It is planned the new technology will be used

in trawling operations in suburban shopping centres and sheriff’s officers will be able to clamp the wheels of debtors’ cars. ‘‘This new number plate recognition technology will enhance our operations and show Victorians that sheriff’s officers are out in force to crack down on unpaid fines and outstanding warrants,’’ Mr Facey said.

Department of Justice spokeswoman Fiona Ung said the new technology would be rolled out across Melbourne’s south-eastern suburbs over the next few weeks.

In Monash alone in the past month, officers caught 523 people with about $150,000 in outstanding fines.

One driver in Glen Waverley had 119 warrants worth almost $35,000 and another in Oakleigh had 55 warrants to the value of $16,309.

Time to de-merge Your article ‘Boulevard of broken dreams’ (Weekly, July 23) is yet another example of Monash council copping flak from people in the south. The inconvenience is no doubt made worse by the need for drainage works.

Feelings run high over such other matters as the council’s failure to promptly remove rubbish, hardly dumped there by the council, from Huntingdale station and along Haughton Road.

The council must despair of ever making our ‘poor cousins’ — as they like to call themselves — happy despite spending millions on such projects as the Oakleigh and Clayton pools (although the ‘modesty curtains’ were an unnecessary extravagance), roads in Oakleigh ward and now the Eaton Mall.

Perhaps now is the time to recognise that the amalgamation was a failure and we should go back to having separate Oakleigh and Waverley councils. Then everyone will be happy.

life must be respected from the first moment of their existence. One problem with IVF is that it is such a destructive procedure.

On average, five out of six embryos are destroyed before implantation.

Pre-implantation genetic diagnosis is a searchand-destroy mission on embryos that are less than perfect. It’s just another form of eugenics.

Every year there are thousands of Australian couples who would love to adopt a child. Less than 100 babies are available for adoption each year.

Rather than destroying babies by IVF and abortion, why not give life a chance and put them up for adoption?

Back to the Bible I read Professor Gary Bouma’s opinion on same-sex marriage in the Weekly (25 June) with sadness. The reasons he gave for his position were poor: 1. He claimed that ‘‘marriage has long since moved beyond traditional definitions’’.

2. One would expect a church minister to speak for God and His viewpoint, not ‘‘reflect public sentiment’’ as he recommends.

Archbishops Pell and Jensen in Sydney are to be commended because they have spoken out clearly from a Bible base. They are rightly seeking to counter the confusion engendered by betrayers like Professor Bouma.

3. Even Professor Bouma admits that ‘‘some texts in the Bible say homosexuality is wrong’’. Can he point out any passage that says that homosexuality is acceptable? And how does a biblical condemnation of tattoos negate the wrongness of homosexuality?

4. ‘‘The kingdom of God was more inclusive than anybody could even begin to think’’ the professor rightly states.

Yet that must be explained: all those entering God’s kingdom must repent of their sins — idolaters, the greedy, adulterers, homosexuals, prostitutes, publicans, prodigals.

Instead of repentance, Professor Bouma is encouraging homosexuals to remain in their sin.

That’s the opposite of Jesus’ attitude.

A cabbie’s final, fatal ride

BY DANIEL TRAN THE cabbie who was stabbed to death and had his beloved taxi stolen in Mount Waverley last week has been remembered as a ‘‘great driver’’. ‘‘He was very well known in the contact centre,’’ 13CABS spokesman Simon Purssey said. ‘‘He was a great driver. It’s a tragedy for the industry, for our contact centre staff.’’

About 3am last Wednesday, police and emergency services were called to Pinewood Drive, where the driver’s body had been discovered by nearby residents.

Police found the man’s cab about 31⁄2 kilometres away at the intersection of Waverley and Gallaghers roads in Glen Waverley, where it had hit a power pole and burst into flames.

The sole occupant, another man who police are investigating over the death of the driver, died at the scene.

Mr Purssey described the driver’s death as ‘‘horrendous’’ but said a lack of security in cabs was not to blame.

But Professor Allan Fels’ draft report into the taxi industry said more could be done by the to improve the safety of drivers. ‘‘Drivers continue to be concerned about their personal safety, especially when driving late at night,’’ the report states. ‘‘While some drivers feel that safety has improved through

measures such as protective screens, cameras, alarm systems and GPS technology, many believe that drug and alcohol-fuelled behaviour is making their jobs more difficult than ever.’’

Detective Senior Sergeant David Snare of the homicide squad said police were investigating whether the slain driver had picked up his attacker in the city.

Police are working with 13CABS and the Victorian Taxi Directorate on CCTV footage of the attack. It is believed the driver picked up his last fare in Elizabeth Street in the city.

Mr Purssey said the death was tragic. ‘‘It’s not a good day for the taxi industry.

But from this, we all seem to bind together and it brings us closer and stronger. ‘‘People have accidents every day — this just happens to be a horrendous one where a great driver that’s been driving for 30 years is no longer with us. ‘‘We’re all feeling terrible.’’

The driver’s family asked police that his name not be released.

BY DANIEL TRAN AS NASA’s newest rover touches down on Mars at the beginning of this week, one Monash University scientist will be waiting with bated breath.

Marion Anderson, who teaches geology at Monash, has spent several years with colleagues from all over the world narrowing down a place for the newest rover, named Curiosity, to land. ‘‘Many fingers and many toes are crossed right now,’’ she says excitedly. ‘‘It’s been a collaborative process from scientists all over the world, right from the start.’’

The rover is expected to touch down on Mars at 3.31pm this afternoon in Gale crater, near Mount Sharp, which scientists meticulously selected because they believe the area once had traces of water. ‘‘If anything was ever alive in that water, the rocks are the right type to have preserved their organic materials. The rover will be able to detect those organic compounds,’’ Ms Anderson says. ‘‘We’re looking for evidence of past life on Mars.’’

project is substantial. Rovers can only be launched every two years when Mars and Earth are closest to each other. It has taken Curiosity nine months to reach Mars and it cost about $2.3 billion. ‘‘You don’t really want to blow the money.’’

When it lands, the rover will examine the rocks and dust around it before making its way to the base of Mount Sharp, a fivekilometre high mountain, where it will start to climb the slope and examine the geology.

Ms Anderson says the surface of Mars resembles the Australian outback. ‘‘It’s pretty flat and covered in boulders,’’ she says. ‘‘Compared to Clayton, imagine you’ve landed at the bottom of a valley. On one side of you there’s a cliff that goes about three kilometres high — that’s the edge of a crater.

About 30 kilometres away from that, there’s a five-kilometre high mountain. It’s going to be pretty visually spectacular.’’

UNLIKE most foster carers, Stefan Ritchie is neither married nor has children of his own.

Mr Ritchie, 41, is single and for the past two years has been fostering at-risk teens referred to him by Waverley Emergency Adolescent Care.

A travel agent by trade, he embarked on becoming a foster parent because he thought he had the potential. It’s a decision he hasn’t regretted. ‘‘Providing foster care is taking up someone under your wing and helping set them up for life,’’ he says. ‘‘It’s extremely rewarding to have someone who responds to your love and your care. ‘‘It doesn’t matter what walk of life you come from, as long as you’ve got a spare room and you’ve got a bit of time to give that young person.’’

But Mr Ritchie is only one of many people that the system desperately needs as the number of carers dwindles.

As reported in the Weekly last week, foster care services in Waverley are struggling to keep up with demand. In 2011-12, Waverley Emergency Adolescent Care had 216 requests

has looked after eight teens. He also has had another stay with him for the past two years.

Like a normal parent, he’s responsible for feeding and clothing his charges as well as offering them a sense of belonging they’ve been unable to get elsewhere. ‘‘It’s really rescuing someone from a life where they’ve been abused or neglected.’’

It’s hard at times; some of the teens who are referred to foster care can have behavioral issues. ‘‘But I guess you come back to the reason why you’re doing it and that’s to help those young people.’’

When it’s time for them to go back home — the ultimate goal of foster care — it can be heart-wrenching for carers like Mr Ritchie. ‘‘You’re going to miss them for sure. It could be difficult when you have bonded that closely. ‘‘If the relationship’s going well, it almost becomes like your own son or daughter and you treat them like your own family.’’ ‘‘There’s such a shortage of carers and people are quite afraid to take it on. ‘‘It’s something that if they have the capacity to do, they should give it a try. You’ve got nothing to lose.’’

BY DANIEL TRAN FOR years, Sheena McGowan was told her efforts in working out the structure of the antibacterial protein PlyC would be in vain.

The protein, known for its effectiveness in fighting harmless sore throats to life-threatening cases of toxic shock, had been studied since the early 1900s but researchers had never been able to determine what it looks like.

The process became so frustrating that Dr McGowan, of Monash’s school of biomedical sciences, began to lose hope.

She spent years growing protein crystals and, because the Australian synchrotron wasn’t built yet, sending them to Chicago to have x-rays fired through them. ‘‘By the end of 2007, I had written to our collaborators in the US and said it’s just not possible,’’ she recalls.

Her colleague, Associate Professor Ashley Buckle, remembers telling her to abandon what looked like a pointless endeavour.

But then, after more than half a decade, one of the crystals suddenly showed some results. ‘‘There was a moment when, on my screen, I could see something that I knew meant we were on the right track and we were going to get

there,’’ Dr McGowan says. Atom by atom, Dr McGowan, Associate Professor Buckle and their colleagues at the University of Maryland and Rockefeller University pieced together what PlyC looked like, paving the way for a new alternatives to antibiotics.

The work by Dr McGowan and and Associate Professor Buckle comes at a crucial time. The World Health Organisation has warned about the growing health threat of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. ‘‘The truth is, we’re going to need something new in the coming decades. The bacteria are gaining a lot of resistance to the antibiotics we have,’’ Dr McGowan said. ‘‘We don’t know when the antibiotic coverage will run out. It’s likely to

PlyC is known for being able to kill bacteria involved in sore throats, impetigo, pneumonia and even a flesh-eating disease.

Up until now, scientific progress has been hindered because researchers they had no idea what the molecule looked like.

Associate Professor Buckle says the breakthrough is a fundamental step forward that stops scientists from ‘‘working in the dark’’. ‘‘The structure and shape answers questions, helps people realise what it means and tells you a bit of how it works.’’ ‘‘Determining the structure is just going to accelerate the next five years or ten years of development. This is really critical.’’

Dr McGowan agreed. ‘‘This kind of research, this basic biology, needs to be done early. We need to invest in this kind of research so we can develop these therapeutics so they’re safe and effective when we need them. ‘‘Biology that we and the US have been doing in this particular project is just fundamental to succeeding in getting something on a shelf that humans can use.’’

Fund cut hits home

BY TARA McGRATH A VITAL service for vulnerable residents in public housing will have its funding slashed by up 40 per cent next year.

The Social Housing Advocacy and Support Program could be forced to axe staff and turn away clients in what’s described as a ‘‘secret’’ announcement, one month after the state budget.

SHASP works to prevent breakdowns in public and community housing and ensure clients don’t end up homeless again.

The program is facing a 24 per cent funding cut from October and a potential 40 per cent cut in the next budget.

Knox-based UnitingCare Harrison has four staff covering the eastern suburbs, as does Wesley Mission. Mark Dixon, the general manager of UnitingCare Harrison’s homelessness services, said there were more than 6000 public housing properties in the eastern region.

UnitingCare Harrison supported more than 300 tenants in the eastern region last year.

SHASP began six years ago and since then the public housing eviction rate in Victorian had fallen from 13 per cent to 6 per cent.

Mr Dixon said the cuts had left many service providers scratching their heads.

‘‘Why cut something that works so well and create additional demand for homelessness, health, family violence and child protection services?,’’ he said.

Mr Dixon denied any consultation with the state government and said Housing Minister Wendy Lovell was wrong to say funding cuts would not impact on case management.

He said almost 100 per cent of cuts would be to case management services and at least 2000 households at risk of tenancy breakdown could miss out on help. Even more would be affected if the 2013-14 cuts went ahead. ‘‘A significant number of these households will inevitably lose their housing and become homeless as a result,’’ Mr Dixon said.

A Save SHASP campaign is calling on the state government to urgently review a proposed second round of cuts next year in consultation with service providers.

A government spokeswoman said the government was working with the welfare sector on a revised case management model for SHASP and client targets for 2012-13 would be calculated as part of this consultation.

The model would be reviewed during service system reform under way as ‘‘many homelessness programs are similar in intent to SHASP’’.

It’s safety first at the station t’s late on a Friday night. A train commuter tweets: ‘‘The next station is Dandenong. Tell my mother I love her.’’

Another tweeter gags: ‘‘Place your bets now: A. Assaulted B. Robbed C. Raped D. Slashed.’’

Such jokes about Dandenong railway station’s reputed lack of safety may soon fall flat.

Trouble has seemingly left the station since protective services officers — armed guards who have trained at the Victoria Police Academy — started patrolling the station on May 29.

For three consecutive weekends in June, there were no reported assaults or robberies at the station and its surrounds during the PSOs’ shifts.

Inspector Bruce Kitchen describes it as ‘‘a massive reduction in crime’’ — an 80 per cent reduction at the railway precinct in June.

The station vigils will gradually spread across Melbourne railway stations in the next two years; the state government plans to deploy PSOs at Noble Park, Box Hill and Epping in coming weeks. Frankston and Springvale PSOs are expected before the end of the year.

The Weekly joined Ben Huismann and Pierre Devienne, two of five protective services officers who rotate shifts at Dandenong station from 6pm to the last train.

Huismann and Devienne patrol the station with a cool confidence that belies seven weeks of training and four months on the job, including a three-month supervised stint at Melbourne CBD stations. The PSOs’ uniform is closely modelled on a regular police kit. Each officer is armed with capsicum spray, a stun gun and a pistol.

People often mistake them for police. On a

couple of occasions, mothers scold excitable children as the PSOs walk past. ‘‘There’s the coppers!’’ a boy yells out. ‘‘Hey, stop that,’’ his mother tells him.

Devienne says it’s quiet this particular Thursday night but, soon after 6pm, the PSOs grab the details of a man smoking under a causeway roof — a prohibited area for smoking.

A radio check reveals he is wanted allegedly stealing from a Frankston bottle shop.

As the night chill descends, Huismann and Devienne wait with the man, who has another smoke — this time legally. Police arrive and take the handcuffed man to Dandenong police station for questioning.

Devienne says that often a person’s misdemeanour, such as smoking in a prohibited area, uncovers a more serious track record.

He tells of a girl who was smoking at the station recently. There were three outstanding warrants for her arrest.

Later in the night, the unpredictability of their task is underscored. Devienne asks a mother to butt out as she sits under a bus shelter with her daughters. ‘‘F . . . off. How dare you tell me to put out my smoke in the cold?’’ she screams.

Despite the withering reaction, the job is a welcome change of pace for the two PSOs: Huismann used to work in sales and marketing, Devienne as a hotel duty manager. They both hope to become fully fledged police officers.

The peak hour is suddenly over. The throngs of commuters thin and the groups that linger at bus stops become more obvious.

signs of trouble. Routinely, the PSOs quickly snuff out the potential for trouble.

The best approach is to ‘‘move them on’’, Devienne says. ‘‘By letting them stay here, it may escalate to something else.’’

Has there been any violence? ‘‘Since I’ve been here there’s been nothing,’’ Devienne says. ‘‘If things escalate, we can get back-up — the crew from Dandenong will be here very quickly.’’

The PSOs regularly do a ‘‘social welfare’’ chat with a group of children who linger at a dimlylit bus stop at night.

The PSOs get a call-out to a bus stop where a man is suspected of being drunk. Devienne talks to the man, who says he’s on medication for schizophrenia. Devienne asks for his identity and he roars in defiance: “What did I do wrong?”

Devienne doesn’t get sucked in. He keeps calm and asks the man’s companion where the man is living. He asks the man if he’s been drinking. The man replies: “I’m not drunk. I don’t drink.

The man’s companion assures Devienne he’ll

look after him, is apologetic over the outburst and leads him away from the railway precinct.

Devienne turns his attention to two young males with soft drink bottles. He asks them what they are drinking. They are sober but cheeky.

“Do you want to try a drink?’’ one retorts.

The PSOs hand out an average of 20-25 infringement notices at weekends. They are for minor offences such as smoking in a restricted area, drunkenness, bad language and conduct and possessing an open container of alcohol.

The PSOs may call in Dandenong police to detain drunks — a chance to sober them up and ensure they get home safely. ‘‘It’s part of our duty of care,’’ Devienne says.

Troublemakers seem to have shifted to neighbouring stations in the meantime. Inspector Kitchen says there has been an increase in ‘‘activity’’ at Springvale and Noble Park stations since the PSOs started at Dandenong and says ‘‘Noble Park and Springvale are still concerns’’.

Inside the station, all seems to run like clockwork. Commuters wait and depart without anxiety. Most say they are glad the PSOs are here.

Railway staff say their presence has driven away the ‘‘riff raff’’ and made their jobs easier.

A Metro Trains staff member says he wanted to apply to be a PSO. “Who wouldn’t want to have a gun on their thigh?’’ But he concedes he wouldn’t want to take a pay cut to take the job, with a starting pay of $50,548.

Huismann says he feels a reward from helping protect others at the station, to make them feel safe. ‘‘That’s what we’re here for. The majority of commuters just want to get home safely.’’

Church keeps faith through self-healing

BY DANIEL TRAN WHILE most people go to a doctor when they’re sick, for the most part Christian Scientists prefer not to.

Members of the First Church of Christ, Scientist in Mount Waverley instead try to heal themselves through prayer.

Spiritual healing is a unique part of their faith.

The religion was founded by Mary Baker Eddy in 1866 after she was able to heal her own injuries with the help of her Bible.

The state’s highest performing independent school, Huntingtower, was founded on the tenets of Christian Science.

Huntingtower was established in 1927 in Malvern and came to Mount Waverley in the early 1950s. It opened up to non-Christian Science families in the 1970s.

Church member Robert Kitchingman, 52, has been a devout Christian Scientist all his life. He went to Huntingtower as a teen and returned seven years ago as its business manager. His own faith was cemented when he was 17.

‘‘I badly injured my back and was able to overcome that through prayer,’’ he says.

He says Christian Scientists believe that spiritual healing through prayer will in turn cure any physical ailments. ‘‘Until you’ve demonstrated something for yourself, you’re never really quite sure. I guess that’s the ‘science’ part,’’ he says. ‘‘Once you demonstrate it, that really cements your understanding. ‘‘Our mental approach to things is more important than the physical approach. ‘‘Your ability to change your thought will have a profound effect on how you feel physically.’’

Asked whether members of his faith ever visit the doctor, Mr Kitchingman says it’s up to individuals. But he says he wouldn’t avoid going to a doctor if he were in jeopardy.

TWO men were rushed to hospital, one with life-threatening injuries, after a two-vehicle crash in Mount Waverley last week.

About 10am last Thursday emergency services were called to the intersection of High Street Road and Stephensons Road, where a car and a cement truck had collided.

The car driver suffered serious head injuries and was taken to The Alfred hospital in a critical condition.

The truck driver was treated by four paramedics for about an hour while emergency services worked to free him from his vehicle.

He had serious leg and pelvis injuries and was taken to The Alfred in a stable condition.

Two west-bound lanes on Stephensons Road were closed and police redirected Head-on collision: Emergency services were called to Mount Waverley last week after a cement traffic. truck and car collided.

Rainwater project Mount Waverley Reserve will become the site of a new water harvesting plant that will capture rainwater running off the roof of the nearby Melbourne Water reservoir. The $320,000 project will be jointly funded by Monash council and the federal government. The water captured will be used to flush toilets at the reserve, maintain nearby tennis courts and irrigate the sports field used by the Eastern Football League.

BY DANIEL TRAN AN Oakleigh woman received a nasty birthday surprise last week when an early morning fire destroyed her uninsured house The woman was not at home when the fire ripped through her Albert Avenue property on July 29.

She had spent the night at her ailing mother’s house, returning the next morning.

MFB investigators were surprised at the extent of damage caused by the fire. ‘‘It’s very rare that they see that much damage in a house fire,’’ spokesman David Jarwood said.

Firefighters responded to a call about 6am on the Sunday before last and found the brick house alight.

The blaze had spread through the roof and was showing signs of spreading to nearby properties.

It took about 40 firefighters to bring the fire under control.

At the time, firefighters feared for the safety of the woman, who lived alone in the house, as they were unable to determine her whereabouts.

The damage bill from the fire is expected to be about $500,000.

Investigators are yet to determine a cause.

BY MICHAEL ELY VIVIENNE Nguyen rolled her eyes and tried her best not to listen whenever her father mentioned the war.

The daughter of an interpreter for the US Army, she turned red whenever he decided it was time for her to learn the truth about the Vietnam war.

As an adult, Ms Nguyen came to realise her father was right all along.

She joined and then became vicepresident of the Vietnamese Community in Australia’s Victorian chapter.

She now implores Greater Dandenong’s extensive Vietnamese community to visit a free exhibition — marking the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam conflict — to ‘‘learn the truth about what happened’’. ‘‘The younger people don’t care.

They say, ‘we’re in a new country’,’’ Ms Nguyen said. ‘‘But it’s really

important for the second generation to learn the history of what happened — regardless of whether it was right.’’

Mr Wells, who has a long-time involvement with several RSLs including Dandenong, longs for the day when Vietnamese veterans of the conflict don’t see themselves as an ‘‘other’’. ‘‘For too long the Vietnamese sections

of the RSL have had their own little sections, divided from everyone else. ‘‘They’re Australian citizens and pay their taxes just like everyone else [in the RSL] and it’s about time they feel just as important.’’

The exhibition runs from August 17-19 during which guests will learn about the co-operation between Australian and South Vietnamese soldiers, the battles including the famous Long Tan confrontation, and the tales of Vietnamese refugees’ trips to Australia. ‘‘It will finish with a candle lighting,’’ Ms Nguyen said. ‘‘We think that’s a nice way to thank the Australians.’’

The exhibition is at Melbourne Town Hall from August 17-19 and is open 9am-5pm.

MONASH University Central wrote its own fairytale by winning the Victorian Netball League division 1 premiership in the final minute on Saturday night.

After going into the match as favourites, Central struggled to get into the game and trailed throughout until star goal attack Steph Tyrell made a shot with 30 seconds on the clock to give her side a 40-39 win over a shattered Boroondara Genesis.

The Genesis had a long shot at goal on the siren but it missed.

Central coach Jacqui Hansen said the game turned with 31⁄2 minutes to go when her defence forced a turnover. ‘‘To say it was a fairytale finish was an understatement,’’ she said. ‘‘That turnover galvanised the team and we made up a five-goal deficit in the final three minutes.

When Steph got the ball she never looked like missing.’’

Hansen said her players’ determination and hard work shone through in the final minutes after a nervous performance in the opening three quarters had Central fall 10 goals behind. ‘‘We literally just stuck with them.

The girls never gave in and we knew if we could put some good passages of play together and break some of their centre passes we would be OK.’’ Besides Tyrell, who was named in the division 1 all-star team, Hansen also praised the determination of centre-court player Jessica D’Anto-

nio, who played the final seven weeks of the season with a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament.

Hansen said D’Antonio showed enormous determination by strapping her knee up each week and risking further damage to play in the premiership. ‘‘Jess did a lot of work in preseason, running up hills to make her legs stronger and the surgeon said to her if she strapped up her knee, her leg strength would let her stay on the court. ‘‘She is one of the toughest people I have ever known. ‘‘She is so mentally tough she refused to miss and played out the season with one good knee. ‘‘The surgeon said she could do more damage if she kept playing; she said she didn’t care.’’

The division 1 competition acts as a feeder league for the VNL championship competition and Hansen said several of her premiership players were ready to step into the top league in 2013. ‘‘We were very lucky to have a player of the calibre of Steph Tyrell play with us all season and it would have been easy for her to step up to championship. ‘‘Some of our other girls could go up as well. Some might start in division 1 next year but I would expect a few of them to give the championship team a shake, mainly because these girls work so hard.’’

Baseball’s next generation steps up to plate THE Dale name is highly respected in Australian baseball.

Phil Dale is considered a legend of the sport and is the coach of the Melbourne Aces in the Australian Baseball League.

Now his son Ryan is making his way into the sport after signing a professional contract with US Major League baseball club Kansas City Royals last week.

Ryan Dale, who lives in Murrumbeena and plays for North Balwyn (winter) and Waverley Wildcats (summer), will head to the US early next year to train with his new club.

He could start by playing rookie baseball with the Royals team in the Arizona League, where

The 16-year-old third baseman said he was pretty excited to sign with the Royals and begin his move towards Major League baseball. ‘‘I have been trying to get this opportunity my whole life,’’ he said. ‘‘I can’t remember a time when I haven’t been playing baseball.’’

With a reputation for being a power hitter, Dale will take some time to get his bearings at professional level. Most Major League sides leave their players in the minor leagues for several years.

Dale said his father had played a key role in him signing with the Royals. ‘‘He took care of all the talking to the clubs,’’

Ryan said. ‘‘He made sure it didn’t get into my head.’’

Dale said the Royals had already sent over a supply of team batting gloves, undershirts and baseball hats as a welcome gift.

Dale spent the past six weeks training with the Major League Baseball Academy on the Gold Coast and he will play summer baseball with the Wildcats, and could play with the Aces in the ABL. Dale can’t wait to head off to the US. ‘‘I went to a training camp over there in Kansas City so they could take a look at me before I signed,’’ he said. ‘‘Everything there is so rich and the environment around the facilities so clean.’’

IT has taken the better part of the Victorian Premier League season but Oakleigh Cannons are putting it all together.

The Cannons thumped lowly Southern Stars 5-0 at Jack Edwards Reserve on Friday night, signalling their rise towards the finals with just over a month left in the season.

Their biggest win of the season came on the same night that league-leader Dandenong Thunder needed a last-minute equaliser to draw 3-3 away to Bentleigh Greens.

The Cannons got their goals from five scorers and are showing the fruits of a late flurry before the transfer deadline. The side added veteran European players Casper Andersen, Rasmus Festersen and Lambros Honos along with Evan Christodoulou from Heidelberg United.

The Cannons have also adapted to new coaches Peter Zois and Bill Theodoropoulos after sacking Huss Skenderovic midway through the season.

Honos opened the scoring on 19 minutes, finding himself in a one-on-one with the keeper and calmly slotting a goal.

After a brief Stars fightback, Ricky Diaco turned at the top of the box and placed a left-foot strike in the bottom corner for a 2-0 half-time lead.

Festersen’s goal came from a brutally quick counter-attack after a Stars shot powered off the post. Festersen chipped the ball over one defender, then pushed it past the keeper.

Cannons midfielder Hayden Doyle got on the end of a chain of Cannons passes for the fourth before veteran defender Ari Dracos smashed home a left-foot free kick for 5-0.

While Cannons co-coach Zois praised his team as a “special group”, Stars coach Dean Hennessy made it clear the side he watched dismantle his team was good enough to contend for the title.

“Dandenong Thunder has been the yardstick all year but after playing them a few weeks ago and then playing Oakleigh tonight, Oakleigh has caught up,” he said.

“Dandenong and Oakleigh are the two best sides we have seen this season. The Cannons went and got three or four very good players from transfers. They have a lot of quality.”

Zois said his side had plenty of work to do but put in a full 90-minute performance responding to the challenge from the coaches at half-time to lift their play in the second half.

The Cannons face a tough away trip to face Hume City at Epping Stadium this Friday at 8.30pm.

New SFL chief keen on growth

BY ROY WARD FOOTBALL administrator David Cannizzo is just 27, but when it comes to the Southern Football League he’s a veteran.

Cannizzo was the SFL operations manager for several years before leaving to become general manager of the Southern Metro Junior Football League last year.

Last week, he was named new chief executive of the SFL. Cannizzo takes on the diverse task of expanding and sustaining a league that spreads from inner city St Kilda right out to the south-eastern suburbs such as Skye, Hallam and Endeavour Hills.

He will begin the role just as the SFL finals begin, yet Cannizzo will take the long view to the league.

He said the size and spread of the league was viable, with teams continuing to rise in the outer south-east as shown by Endeavour Hills and Hal-

lam’s recent arrival and the inclusion of Carrum Patterson Lakes in 2013. ‘‘I think our reach is the beautiful part of this league,’’ he said. ‘‘The reason I say that is with modern technology and with a good-sized board of 10 people, I think we can provide enough support to all our members. ‘‘With the travel factor, clubs would only have to travel to the far out locations once a season.’’

Cannizzo said he was personally involved in allowing Endeavour Hills entry, adding that with strategic plans, the level of clubs in the Greater Dandenong area was sustainable.

He said clubs and the league needed to plan for the future and keep watch on the ageing of their home suburbs. ‘‘Every suburb changes. The Bayside-Kingston area is booming now but was seen as an ageing suburb years ago,’’ he said. ‘‘We need to educate our clubs to look three to

five years ahead to pre-empt when that cycle is changing.’’

Cannizzo wants to work with clubs to improve and increase the level of support they receive from the league as the number of teams each club fields continues to grow. ‘‘One thing I want to work on in the short term is the maintenance and assistance we offer to existing member clubs,’’ he said. ‘‘With thirds and colts footy, our clubs continue to grow but with more participants we need the right amount of administration support to make sure our clubs are still operating with good governance and structure.’’

Lions take crucial win MULGRAVE is on the verge of holding its place in division 2 after a stirring win over Bayswater in their mustwin Eastern Football League game on Saturday.

The Lions’ 11-point win was their fourth victory in succession and moved them up to eighth place with two matches to go.

With their last two matches against Mooroolbark and Montrose, the Lions aren’t completely safe but they are tied with Waverley Blues and one game ahead of last-place Doncaster.

Coach Ryan James said the win over the Waters came from the desire to prove themselves to former coach Neil Winterton, who left the club after accepting the Lions’ coaching job during the off-season. ‘‘I let it be known to the boys that they had a bit to prove,’’ James said. ‘‘The boys’ effort on the day was massive and it was the best win I’ve been involved in apart from our grand final wins, especially as Bayswater had a bit to play for as well.’’

After taking their future into their own hands, James said his side wouldn’t fear facing two finals sides to end the season.

Improving Clays fall short of finals CLAYTON has made a major leap this season but the Clays won’t play in the Southern Football League division 1 finals.

Dingley proved too much for the Clays in what was effectively an elimination final on Saturday with the Dingoes winning by 51 points at Souter Oval.

The win leaves the Dingoes on the cusp of the finals needing one more win to secure their place while the Clays are now four games adrift of the top five with three matches remaining.

Even a mid-table finish shows how much Clayton has progressed after staying in division 1 by just percentage points last season.

In the opening term nothing went to plan for the Dingoes, who couldn’t win the football nor find their men as the Magpies repeatedly spread themselves across the field and pelted the ball into their forward line, with Aaron Purves and Chris Morrison especially damaging as the visitors established a 35-point lead.

But the Dingoes must have found some boot polish during coach Shane Morwood’s quarter-time talk as they showed a clean pair of heels to the Magpies for the rest of the match, getting back within 17 points at half-time, then kicking themselves into the lead by three-quarter time thanks to an after-the-siren goal from Daniel Turcurelli.

The Clays kicked the opening goal of the last term but the Dingoes broke free from that point onwards with Ben Arnold’s goal midway through the term taking their lead past three goals before a flurry of late majors extended the margin.
