cash doubt added to duplication delays MELTON

The long-awaited duplication of Melton Highway is at least 15 years away, Transport Department documents reveal. Duplication of the highway between The Regency and Ryans Lane was among the projects listed in documents tabled with an east-west link planning panel earlier this month. But while the documents propose the upgrades be completed by about 2031, both Public Transport Victoria and VicRoads say there is no guarantee the works will be funded. Melton highway patrol’s Senior Constable Allan Edwards said increasing traffic meant

Melton Highway needed to be duplicated well before 2031. Thirteen deaths have been recorded on the highway since 1987. “It’s a proven fact that duplicated roads are so much safer and help eliminate the risk of head-on collisions,” Senior Constable Edwards said. Melton council planning and development general manager Luke Shannon said the council agreed. “Given the significant growth in the western region of Melbourne … the planning work for this to occur should commence as a matter of priority,” he said. Other projects listed in the Transport Department documents include duplication of Calder Park Drive, Westwood Drive and

Robinsons Road to four lanes by 2021 and six lanes by 2031, and the duplication of Taylors Road in three sections by 2021. VicRoads regional director Patricia Liew said the organisation was ‘‘redefining’’ the transport model that was used in the documents. “While the model will look at the road and public transport network that will be required in the future, it assumes population and landuse growth and can only be considered as a guide,’’ she said. Public Transport Victoria spokesman Adrian Darwent said the documents were created for planning purposes and did not necessarily represent future commitments. \ TARA MURRAY

murder accused held in custody MELTON SOUTH

Two men have been charged with murder after the death of a man in Melton South on Saturday. Homicide detectives were called to a Phillip Street property after a man was found with what police said was a gunshot wound about 2.10am. On Sunday, police charged two Melton South men, aged 48 and 37, with murder. The 48-year-old faced an out-of-sessions hearing and was remanded in custody. Both men will face Melbourne Magistrates Court yesterday. \ TM

A group that is lobbying for independent noise testing at Moorabool’s Lal Lal wind-energy station has mapped out proposed turbine locations and neighbouring homes. Lal Lal Environment Protection Association spokesman John McMahon said it was “grossly irresponsible” that no independent body was in charge of monitoring noise levels for such projects. WestWind’s 64-turbine Lal Lal development was approved by then planning minister Justin Madden in 2010. The company has until April 2017 to build the turbines. “No one other than the wind companies themselves are measuring the noise levels,’’ Mr McMahon said. “They’re meant to measure them and rectify any infringements, but they have no incentive to do so.” Mr McMahon said the newly formed association had a handful of members, with a few dozen informal supporters looking to get involved.

‘‘The health of nearby residents needs to be better considered,” Mr McMahon said. “There’s concern about the potential danger of audible wind facility noise and infrasound to neighbours, and more research is needed on its effects.” But Moorabool Environment Group president Rose De La Cruz said there was no evidence that wind farms caused medical problems. “I’m very much in favour of wind energy as it’s clean and freely available,” she said. “There are some who have anecdotal evidence of headaches and the like, but these have not been proved to be caused by wind turbines.” \ PRISCILLA MOCA

Justice Out West, released by Brimbank and Melton Community Legal Centre last week, found that strong demand, extreme population growth and increasing cultural diversity were among the challenges faced by the service. legal hub now full-time at library Brimbank Melton Community Legal Centre (BMCLC) is expanding its services to meet the growing needs of Melton and Moorabool residents. At the official opening of the centre’s full-time, five-days-a-week office at Melton library last week, managing lawyer Stephanie Tonkin said a proper understanding of clients’ needs was crucial. “We are trying to respond to what our clients need, and with many of them travelling to the city for work they aren’t able to make the most of our centre,’’ she said. ‘‘Having a Saturday morning clinic in Melton [starting next month] will be helpful for them.” Services available in Melton include a family violence advice clinic, bi-monthly finance sessions and general drop-in sessions. Ms Tonkin said a duty lawyer had been spending time in Bacchus Marsh for the past 12 months. The service is planning a pilot program at Dame Phyllis Frost Centre and the Metropolitan Remand Centre to help prison inmates reduce debt. BMCLC will also hold a ‘‘mortgage stress’’ roundtable discussion and advocacy workshops for lawyers and volunteers. \ TM

More than 2400 Kurjunjang houses will soon have access to high-speed internet, with work on the next stage of the National Broadband Network about to begin. NBN Co spokesman Trent Williams confirmed last week that Kurjunjang would become the second area in Melton to be part of the national rollout. He said construction typically took 12 months. “We are trying to choose areas where they have not always had fantastic services,’’ he said. Unfortunately, a pro-Woolpack supporter has launched an unpleasant attack on me using a pseudonym. This continues a long history of personal attacks, abuse and swearing by Woolpack supporters towards those who have successfully preserved an intact Bacchus Marsh Avenue of Honour in repeated rulings from 2010 to 2014. Those arguing for Woolpack have been caught on Facebook or elsewhere using words like “paedophile’, “rockspider”, “dropkick”, “nuff-nuff” and much worse towards those mounting a sensible argument for an intact avenue. At the Heritage Council hearing, supporters of the avenue were the subject of witnessed physical and verbal attacks. I have had my family, my house and my profession attacked. The Avenue of Honour/Woolpack Road issue has been repeatedly

He states: “The big problem for the Avenue of Honour is that the eastern half is currently seeing 300 to 400 heavy truck movements a day.” What he does not say is that 90 per cent of those are due to local deliveries, quarry trucks and company trucks that would not use a truck bypass anyway. the findings of the recent VicRoads traffic study. He also states: “Despite repeated warnings from arborists, it’s continued to be used as a truck route and will put the avenue’s long-term survival in peril.” This was disproven by expert testimony during the Heritage Victoria hearings regarding the Avenue of Honour. There is a misguided campaign to cap council rates to the rate of inflation. This would be a disaster for our communities, especially when state and federal governments are cutting social services because they’re too gutless to increase taxes. Councils need to set their rates based on community needs. We can’t, on one hand, demand rate rises be limited to CPI while expecting councils to continue to maintain infrastructure and provide social services. So-called “greedy” councils have had to take over community services from Spring Street, while accounting for the state government’s hefty landfill tax, and ensuring they can cover entitlements of all council employees. Setting rates needs a horses-for-courses approach, particularly for those councils with few alternative revenue streams. A Burnside man will receive an Australian bravery award after stepping in to stop a dog that attacked a woman and her grandson. On Monday, Governor-General Quentin Bryce said that Damian Hall, who received a Victorian bravery award in 2012, would receive a national honour for his selfless actions. “It is hard to put into words,” Mr Hall (pictured) said of the news. “I received a letter before Christmas and I was a bit shocked and overwhelmed. It brings back a lot of memories.” Mr Hall was driving on Westwood Drive in Burnside on November 17, 2011 when he saw a woman fighting off a pitbull terrier that was attacking a baby inside a pram. He rushed to help the pair and struck the dog several times before it began to attack him. A passerby pulled up in a ute to help. The woman and child were able to climb inside the vehicle, while Mr Hall jumped onto the tray of the ute to get out of harm’s way. He then stopped the dog from attacking a neighbour who had come outside to assist. “When it first happened, people were asking, ‘what were you thinking?’” Mr Hall said. “I wasn’t thinking, you just get it done.’’

A Melton South woman was among 27 people arrested in drug raids across Melbourne’s north and west last Tuesday. Aysun Hanay, 29, charged with two drug offences, was unrepresented in an application for bail that was refused by magistrate Margaret Harding in Melbourne Magistrates Court last Wednesday. More than 700 police executed 45 search warrants in pre-dawn raids on properties across the northern and western suburbs. The court heard that Hanay was captured on video using drugs at the workplace of a co-accused. Taskforce Detective Leanne Klein said the charges against Hanay related to dates last December and in February and involved small amounts of methamphetamine. Hanay told the court she had been a heavy drug user but was “trying to get better”. She was scheduled to reappear in court yesterday. \

FUNNY FEELING The Melbourne International Comedy Festival turns the city into a giant hub of laughter, writes ROBERT FEDELE Cal Wilson – It Could Have Been Me

E

ver wonder what life would be like if you had ended up as someone else? Comedian Cal Wilson found enough inspiration in the sliding doors scenario to dream up her latest show, It Could Have Been Me, for this year’s Melbourne International Comedy Festival. “I was hanging out the washing and thinking about what I was going to write about and started thinking what I would have done if I hadn’t become a comedian and all the different people I could have ended up as if I’d made different decisions,” says Wilson. The impromptu brainstorming session led to her creating an eclectic mix of alter egos who burst into life over an hour of stand-up comedy. There’s a feminist poet who takes herself too seriously; a macho bloke sporting a moustache; and even a surgeon. Then there’s the character Wilson believes makes the most sense. “Probably the most plausible, I reckon, is the person who’s still entertaining at kids’ parties in their 50s dressed up as a fairy who never made it,” she laughs. Wilson welcomed the chance to ham it up as the people she could have become but says the concept made her reflect on how lucky she feels to have made a career out of comedy. “I’m really fortunate in my job. It takes me to lots of amazing places and I meet so many interesting people. I’m really glad that as much as I think I could have made some decisions better, this is what I do.” Wilson grew up in New Zealand and used comedy as a way of masking her insecurities. “I was a shy teenager and discovered that making people laugh was an easy way to have a conversation because I really didn’t know what to say to people.” She took up drama in high school in the hope of becoming an actor but then turned to Theatresports, a form of improv theatre that involves opposing teams performing scenes based on audience suggestions. “I was awful at the start,” Wilson recalls. “But I got better. I got really good at it. That was the start of doing comedy on stage.” She co-founded the Court Jesters improv group in 1990 and went on to become part of the New Zealand team that took out the World Theatresports title in Los Angeles in 1994. “I was really lucky in Christchurch. There wasn’t any stand-up; there was only my company that was doing improv. The audience were quite patient with us and we were able to learn as we went and got better and better. But if we’d had competition maybe it would have been harder for us.” When Wilson graduated to stand-up, she had already become familiar with the addictive feeling of scoring a laugh. “It’s really lovely. When you go to a party and you’re in the corner of a room and there’s a circle of you and you’re all telling jokes and laughing with each other. Someone says a great line and someone else says a great line and everyone’s laughing. It’s kind of that feeling, but magnified.” Wilson took out the Best Newcomer Award at the 2001 Melbourne International Comedy Festival. She moved to Australia a decade ago and recalls being influenced by the likes of Denise Scott, Judith Lucy and Lawrence Mooney.

Wilson, who is as chirpy and exuberant off stage as she is on, soon became a popular figure on the comedy circuit in her own right. As well as stand-up, she has co-hosted several radio programs and appeared on television shows such as Good News Week, Spicks and Specks, The Wedge, and Thank God You’re Here. This year she’s even planning to write a book, a collection of stories which she describes as an incomplete memoir “because I don’t think I deserve to do a memoir yet”. “Somebody pointed out that it [comedy] is the same as any small business. You never know when your next job is coming. It can be quite lonely because as a stand-up you’re usually working by yourself. You go to a lot of places on your own and you’re by yourself backstage and then afterwards you’re on your own again. It can be quite solitary, but the actual job itself is so fantastic. When you’re doing it and you’re on stage with an audience and it’s going well it’s such a great feeling so it balances out.” Wilson broke in her new show, which involved her working with a theatre director to make it bigger and bolder, at the recent Adelaide Fringe festival. Now she’s looking forward to bringing it to the hustle and bustle of Melbourne’s much-loved comedy event. When not performing she attempts to see as many shows as possible and says taking in a mix of world-class comedians and undiscovered talent can be inspiring. “It’s the best time to start thinking about your next show. It’s such a creative environment that you get spurred on by other people. I love when you discover a comedian you’ve never heard of but they’re just brilliant. “I love the way it [the festival] takes over the town hall, which is kind of respectable and quite sort of buttoned up. dam Watson didn’t set out to follow in his father Peter’s footsteps and pursue a career in the ambulance service. But when he did, no one was prouder than his dad. “I had a background in IT and lost my job in 1999,” Watson recalls. “I was pulling out my hair, trying to find another job, when dad suggested I do the course in non-emergency patient transport. “I did the course at Victoria University and got a job in the medical transport service. He then inspired me to become more trained and get into the ambulance service.” Watson, now based at Melton, was one of many young prospective paramedics influenced by Peter Watson. Peter, a paramedic for 32 years, had two stints at the Melton station, including as team manager from 2000 until 2008, when he left the service after being diagnosed with cancer. He died later that year. A memorial plaque was unveiled at last month’s official opening of the new Melton station. “I felt very proud and emotional when they unveiled the plaque,” Watson says. “Dad’s former colleagues were looking to raise money for some sort of memorial and I was taken aback when the service decided to do it.” Watson says his father was the driving force behind relocation of the branch and recalls his father’s willingness to teach others as among his greatest assets, along with a wicked sense of humour. “Dad was always teaching courses even before he was team leader and he helped many a student paramedic when they were on the road learning,” he says. “He always had time to help me learn and he always had time to spend with everyone. He taught them

fighting-fit melton ready for promotion push hockey

A long off-season for Melton Hockey Club is almost at an end, with the club having high hopes that 2014 could see it moving up the ranks in the Victorian hockey community. Melton’s women’s squad has been training since the start of December in readiness for the Vic League 2 season. Director of coaching Ron Shadbolt says confidence is high that the squad can earn promotion.

“The girls have been training hard to a schedule that’s five days a week, so they’re extremely fit,” Shadbolt said. “They’ve all been playing some sort of hockey over summer to keep match fit, so we feel like we’ve got a really good chance to earn promotion this year. “I think we’ve got enough talent to push up into Vic League 1 … the girls have worked their tails off.” Last season, Melton had only enough women’s players to field two sides. This year,

a recruitment drive has had the club’s playing stocks rise to more than 40 women, giving the club greater flexibility as well as the chance to field a third side. For the men – playing in Vic league 3 – the goals are less grand with a number of last year’s players not fronting this year because of work or travel commitments. “It’ll be a difficult season for the men’s firsts, but there’s opportunities there for some of the younger players to push through,” Shadbolt said.

The top two sides on the ladder put on an exhibition of hard-nosed cricket in the first two of four days’ play, with runs hard to come by as the Burras ground their way to 168 in 86 overs. The pressure was palpable throughout both days, with Gisborne also struggling to score freely as it finished Sunday on 8-137 from 81 overs. This will be Melton’s last season playing at Mowbray College, with Shadbolt saying the club is looking forward to a new pitch on Bridge Road in 2015. “We’ve lost players due to the [current] facilities; it’s not a great number but some players have moved clubs,” Shadbolt said. “What the club needs is exposure, and at Bridge Road … people will see where hockey is. We’re one of the biggest sports clubs in Melton with close to 200 members, so the new ground will be a big boost. \ EM

Bacchus won the toss and elected to bat, with a strong 45-run opening stand between Chris Griffiths (14) and Andrew Porter (30) giving it a promising start. Michael Porter (44) and Dave Maurer (22 not out) made crucial runs down the order, but it was slow going all day as Bacchus posted 147 in 82.4 overs.
