Protected gums attacked

BY ANDRIA COZZA CONSERVATIONISTS say they are heartbroken after finding centuries-old trees vandalised along Toolern Creek. ‘‘It’s devastating to think some horrible person has cut such a magnificent living thing,’’ Friends of Toolern Creek president Lyn Holdsworth said. Group members have found a number of protected river red gums in Blamey Drive, Melton, damaged by a chainsaw. Others had had branches removed. Melbourne Water waterways manager Greg Bain said some of the damaged trees were already dead or dying. “Even a single cut to a river red gum can cut off the circulation of water and nutrients or introduce infection, ultimately killing the tree.’’ A permit is required from Melton Council to remove, destroy or lop native vegetation — including fallen trees — in the Bacchus Marsh valley. Anyone caught vandalising or removing river red gums or fallen branches can be fined up to $169,000. Mr Bain said river red gums were a significant part of the local environment, their hollows providing shelter and food for birds, mammals and insects. “Not only does the red gum play an important role in stabilising river banks but they also take over 100 years to produce their hollows, which are vital for local fauna.” Mr Bain said the vandalism not only harmed the Toolern Creek catchment but undermined the great work of volunteer groups. Ms Holdsworth said up to 20 volunteers tended to the creek each Monday, watering and planting the next generation of trees. ‘‘The river red gums are priceless and we can’t understand why anyone would want to cut down a 30-metre, 200-year-old tree.’’ Information to Crime Stoppers: 1800 333 000

INBRIEF High-speed chase through Gordon An unlicensed driver who led police on a highspeed chase through Gordon was the first person to be jailed under tough new laws. Bradley John Palmer, 33, was last week jailed for eight months after he sped away from police at more than double the speed limit. The Port Melbourne man appeared in Ballarat Magistrates Court on January 14, and pleaded guilty to six charges including failing to stop on police request, driving at a dangerous speed and stating a false name. The court heard Palmer was speeding along Main Street in Gordon on January 13 when he was intercepted by police but sped away. Police pursued the unlicensed driver, who reached speeds of up to 140km/h on Old Melbourne Road, which is a 60km/h zone, before he dumped his car and escaped on foot. Palmer ran into bushland on the north side of the road, sparking an extensive police search of the area. He was eventually located at a property in Gordon.

Police have cautioned a Melton boy who admitted starting a fire near houses in Melton. The boy, 11, was part of a group of 10 and 11-year-olds spoken to by police after the January 10 blaze. The fire, which was burning towards the Western Highway, was quickly contained. Police said they had contacted the parents of the boys involved.

MELTON charity stores are frustrated that they are increasingly being used as illegal dumping grounds. Melton Uniting Church Op Shop manager Jenni Lethbridge said the problem had worsened in the past 18 months. ‘‘It was particularly bad over Christmas. The shop was closed, but our workers had to come in over the holiday break to clean up.’’ Ms Lethbridge said offenders were regularly dumping dirty mattresses, household rubbish and broken furniture, ‘‘stuff that should be taken to the tip’’. ‘‘I think the tip prices are reasonable. People are doing this out of laziness, they can’t be bothered.’’ Last week, the Weekly reported that a vacant lot next to the Salvation Army’s Deer Park store was covered with illegally dumped rubbish. Melton Council operations manager Greg Wood said fees at the Melton Recycling Facility were at or below the metropolitan average. ‘‘This policy complements the free disposal allocations provided to each residential property in the municipality to ensure that materials can be disposed in an appropriate manner,’’ Mr Wood said. Ms Lethbridge said security camera footage showed a man regularly broke in to the shop’s drop bin area, leaving a huge mess to clean up the next day. ‘‘It’s always in the dark of night and he has his face covered.’’ She said volunteers took four loads of goods unsuitable for sale to the Melton tip most weeks. Mr Wood encouraged anyone with information on illegal dumping to contact council. The council has provided an ‘‘at-call’’ hard waste recycling and reuse collection service since 2010. Mr Wood said residents could book up to three cubic metres of hard waste at any time of the year. Tip vouchers are also included with annual rates notices.

A Caroline Springs man, 19, has been remanded in custody charged with a series of armed robberies in Melton and Brimbank between November 6 and January 8. The robberies were committed at adult shops, an Indian restaurant in Melton South and Victoria University in St Albans. He was remanded in custody to appear at Melbourne Magistrates Court.

A Bacchus Marsh man escaped injury after his 1988 Corvette caught fire last Thursday. Police said the man pulled over on the Western Freeway near Melton after noticing smoke coming from under the car’s dashboard. The car was soon engulfed in flames. The blaze, which destroyed the car, sparked a small grass fire which was put out by the CFA. The car fire is believed to have been caused by an electrical fault.

Motors, medicine on the right road

Melton and Moorabool residents can get their fourwheel fix and support the region’s health by attending the eighth annual David Calleja Memorial Car Show. Funds raised by the display of cars, trucks and bikes will go to the purchase of medical equipment for the Bacchus Marsh and Melton Regional Hospital and Melton Health. Organisers expect more than 4000 people will turn out to see more than 700 vehicles roll into Maddingley Park on Sunday, February 3. ‘‘The car show is an important annual event as it promotes awareness of the health services available to a new and growing community throughout Bacchus Marsh, Melton and Caroline Springs. And it generates funds for much-needed medical equipment,’’ spokeswoman Nadine Homewood (pictured) said. ‘‘It’s Bacchus Marsh’s biggest event.’’ Vehicles on display from 7am will include hotrods, classic, vintage and exotic cars, trucks and bikes. Trophies will be awarded for best car, bike and truck in their class. The event will also feature jumping castles, rides, slides, face painting, live music, free showbags, food stalls and a market. The Weekly understands the property in question is up for sale. VicRoads project director Trevor Boyd said the authority was proposing a truck detection and warning system on the corner of Bacchus Marsh and Woolpack roads to alert motorists, and a 3km climbing lane at the eastern interchange. ‘‘The climbing lane will allow trucks to gain speed and merge safely with the traffic on the freeway,’’ he said. ‘‘Due to the constrained physical environment it is very difficult to achieve the ideal arrangement. ‘‘One of the objectives is to remove some of the ‘through’ truck traffic away from the town centre. The proposed new eastern interchange would assist to achieve this.’’

VICROADS has been accused of ‘‘road-locking’’ tourism in Bacchus Marsh. Bacchus Marsh Tourism Association member Tina Serilis is disappointed the new traffic strategy does not allow for pedestrian access between Moon Reserve and Hopetoun Cemetery. ‘‘The cemetery and surrounds is a place of major historical significance within the state of Victoria and is recognised for still being within its original rural setting,’’ she said. ‘‘The cemetery would be roadlocked by the proposed new

A NEW VicRoads traffic strategy for Bacchus Marsh will put more trucks on the Avenue of Honour, according to a concerned tourism operator. Tina Serilis fears that VicRoads intends to channel trucks down Gisborne Road, Grant Street and Woolpack Road and towards a new eastern interchange, creating major safety issues. ‘‘The area is a leisure, farming and tourism precinct,’’ Ms Serilis said. ‘‘Increasing the volume of trucks presents major safety issues for the community and visitors alike. At the end of the day, the proposal doesn’t address the core issue of removing trucks from the avenue.’’

Ms Serilis said the plan would lead to more noise pollution from trucks ‘‘barrelling’’ out of Bacchus Marsh via the eastern interchange overpass. She questioned why VicRoads would design a plan where trucks had to enter the freeway on an incline. ‘‘Trucks are much better suited to entering a freeway on a flat road and this would avoid issues with noise pollution, increased air pollution from the need for extreme acceleration and the general hazard of a truck trying to merge into the freeway at a low speed off an incline.’’ Ms Serilis was concerned VicRoads planned to acquire private land on the corner of Bacchus Marsh Road and Flanagans Drive for a new roundabout.

CFA eyes new site for station BY BEN CAMERON FIREFIGHTERS and residents hope a new fire station in Greendale will boost brigade numbers in the high-risk area. The town could soon have a new headquarters, with the CFA proposing a new station late next year. Moorabool Council officers have been working with the CFA and Greendale Recreation Reserve Committee on preliminary requirements. ‘‘CFA is looking into options to rebuild the Greendale fire station,’’ a CFA spokesman said. ‘‘This may involve relocating the station from its current site in Prince Street. ‘‘The area is serviced adequately from Prince Street by Greendale CFA volunteers, with support from neighbouring brigades.”

Melton South’s Monique Borg says she’s absolutely thrilled after going to great lengths to help kids with cancer. The eightyear-old (pictured with mum Mandy Borg) parted with about 40 centimetres of her hair last week, raising more than $7500 for cancer charity Challenge. It’s been quite a journey. Four years ago she decided to grow her hair so that, later, her hairdresser mum could cut and donate her tresses to be made into wigs for sick children. Mrs Borg said she had been overwhelmed by people’s generosity. About 80 people attended a celebration last week. ‘‘Monique wanted to raise $7000 . . . and she did it. We are so proud of her,’’ Mrs Borg said. ‘‘Even when people would comment on how beautiful her hair was, she always told them, ‘I’m doing it so I can help kids with cancer’.’’

District 15 Ballarat operations officer Malcolm Bruce said Greendale boasted a healthy quota of volunteers, with 34 active members. ‘‘It’s in a high-risk area so there’s a good number of volunteers, but we could always use more,’’ he said. As reported by the Weekly, 10 brigades assisted Greendale firefighters after a grassfire broke out on January 11. ■ A small grassfire in Spargo Creek was quickly controlled last Tuesday afternoon. Six appliances from Daylesford, Musk, Mollongghip and Leonards Hill were called to the blaze on Ballan-Daylesford Road just before 3pm. A CFA spokesman said several houses were under threat, but the fire was quickly controlled.

Almost-blind top citizen has clearest vision BY BEN CAMERON SYLVIA Palmer thought she’d seen it all during her 90 years, but she admits being named Moorabool’s citizen of the year was a big surprise. ‘‘I was rather shocked, I nearly had a heart attack,’’ Mrs Palmer said after receiving the news last week. ‘‘Somebody thought I was worthy.’’ A Country Women’s Association member for almost 75 years, Mrs Palmer has given freely of her time to many local groups and organisations. She still volunteers at the Bacchus Marsh hospital op shop twice a week, boasting she can ‘‘put hangers on clothes as quick as anybody can’’. Almost totally blind, Mrs Palmer hasn’t allowed her dwindling eyesight to hold her back. With the support of a loyal band of friends and family, she’s

still able to leave the house and ‘‘go out and do things’’, like shopping independently. ‘‘You’ve got to try. Just because you’ve got a disability doesn’t mean you don’t try,’’ she says. ‘‘My positivity comes from my experiences – the drought, the upsets – but you’ve gotta keep going in life.’’ ■ Cherries, quilts, photos and wacky outfits dominated nominations for the community event of the year award, but it was the Myrniong & District Seniors Luncheon Group which took the prize. Started in 1993, the program provides meals for up to 30 seniors each fortnight. Also nominated were the Bacchus Marsh Strawberries & Cherries Weekend, Ballan Quilt and Craft Show, Lal Lal Moorabool photo exhibition, and the Bacchus Marsh Literary Trail. Award winners will be recognised at Bacchus Marsh Public Hall from 8am, Saturday.

INSIDESTORY

Fun in a warehouse of gore It seems society has moved on from simpler times when people played Monopoly and Connect Four to be entertained. need a more realistic approach, where we run, chase and shoot. STEPHANIE ZEVENBERGEN learns more about present-day ou would be forgiven for driving past the old ‘Hard Yakka’ building, hidden in a quiet residential pocket of Broadmeadows, and thinking nothing of it. But dare to go inside and you’ll be introduced to a world of real-life zombies who seek to annihilate anyone who gets in their way. And it’s your job to destroy them. Residing in the building is the genius creation of Patient 0: a real-life, multiplayer, first-person shooter, role-playing game. The warehouse rooms are ‘gored up’ with blood-spattered walls and prosthetic bodies, waiting for eager ‘shooters’ to have some fun. The concept was dreamed up over after-work beers and pizzas by three friends last March. By October 31 their dream had become a reality and so had their company, IRL Shooter (In Real Life). One of the creators, David Leadbetter, says the game of ‘glorified laser tag’ has people from across Melbourne, Australia and even overseas, intrigued. It’s a simple concept. You’re in a team of six shooters and have a mission to complete in just over an hour. The obstacle is the zombies who will get in the way as players progress through three massive warehouse-style rooms. The shooters need to do just that: shoot the zombies with their laser guns to eradicate them. More than 100 professional actors have been hired in these flesh-eating zombie roles, to scare, obstruct and thrill whoever comes into contact with them. ‘‘The players take a very definite path and then there’s all these hidden doors for our zombie cast to move through,’’ Leadbetter says. ‘‘A lot of the actors are physically trained and theatre-trained or they are circus performers.

In actual fact, we’re a pack of nerds running around playing games, shooting at each other with round little balls that break paint on us.’’ At the 36-hectare property, with a backdrop of beautiful bush, paintballers have a range of scenarios to choose from for their game. Like shooting zombies, it’s a similar concept when it comes to paintballing: attack and defend. Groups can range from four players to 150 and paintballers are split into two groups, with the main aim of the game being to capture the flag of the other team. The other aim is not to get shot. Once you’re shot, you’re out of that game and are escorted to a

— Daniel Cumming waiting area until the next games starts. Each game goes for about 15 minutes and a session will last up to three hours. A referee watches all games closely to ensure fairness and safety.

MEASURE YOURSELF TO SEE HOW MUCH YOU COULD WIN!

Cumming says the game definitely attracts the thrill-seekers and adrenalin junkies. ‘‘This is as close to cowboys and indians as you’ll get. And it’s as simple as that. ‘‘By nature we’re hunters and gatherers. We can’t just switch off 100 generations of hunting skills. We need to get out and have that little bit of thrill. ‘‘It’s the same thing when people ask, ‘What’s the mystique about all these first person shooting games?’ It’s that fantasy. ‘‘Here they can come out and hunt and nobody gets hurt, no animals get killed and they have the opportunity to just have fun.’’ One of the biggest concerns players have, according to Cumming, is fear of the pain that will be caused by the tiny paintball when it hits.

‘‘The minimum shooting distance is six to eight metres. If you shoot within that distance it will sting. But what happens is, people find it doesn’t hurt as much as everybody says so they become more confident and daring. ‘‘Bucks parties are the worst. By the end of the day half of them have lost their fear of the gun, so all they want to do is shoot each other from one to two metres away and that’s like hitting each other with sticks. From that close you’re going to hurt each other.’’ While there haven’t been any major injuries in the time that Cumming has operated the site, he says a certain amount of confidence grows in players as they progress through a day of paintballing. ‘‘They’ll start feeling more adventurous, so we’ll give them the option of playing ‘attack and

BY NICK TOSCANO A MAN jailed over a large-scale drug operation spanning Melton, Wyndham, Brimbank and Ballarat has lost a Supreme Court appeal to have his nine-year sentence reduced. Tyrone Formosa, of Wyndham Vale, was sentenced in September 2011 to a non-parole period of six years and six months after pleading guilty to charges of conspiring to import a border-controlled drug in commercial quantities and to trafficking methylamphetamine and MDMA. He was arrested in March 2008 after extensive investigations by the Australian Federal Police, Victoria Police and Australian Customs, which began in 2005. The operation probed several crime syndicates involved in importing and trafficking illegal drugs. Most of the drugs came from Canada and were transported to Formosa in parcels sent through mail or by courier. Police intercepted 60 packages, including 25 addressed to Victorian properties in Wynd-

ham Vale, Little River, Caroline Springs, Ardeer, Ballarat and Cape Clear. Formosa’s lawyers appealed his sentence to the Victorian Court of Appeal last month, claiming it was excessive. They argued the sentencing judge had taken as fact a number of ‘‘questionable’’ points, leading him to determine the extent of Formosa’s involvement in the syndicate that were not supported by evidence. They disputed findings that Formosa had deliberately deceived the court when giving evidence, that he had been the principal of the syndicate since 2005 and an inferred finding that he was the sole point-of-contact in Melbourne for the Canada-based dealer. It was also argued the sentencing judge relied too heavily on the oral submission of one of Formosa’s co-offenders. The Supreme Court refused the appeal. Judge Simon Whelan said the sentencing judge had not simply ‘‘preferenced’’ the cooffender’s testimony but had reached his findings beyond reasonable doubt that Formosa had been the syndicate’s principal.

Vocation of the heart A nurse recalls her job’s impact for writer Ben Cameron dynamics. Before long you felt part of the family. You could knock on the door at any time, day or night.’’ Mrs Whitefield started off at the Bacchus Marsh hospital in administration 23 years ago. She went on to serve in theatre, maternity and eventually infection control. It gave a broad appreciation of how much had changed in health care over half a century. ‘‘One thing that stands out is how patients are in and out so quickly these days. New mums used to be in hospital for eight, nine or 10 days. They’d have to con the doctor into being let out early. These days they’re in, delivered and gone before you can blink.’’ Mrs Whitefield says she realised her time was up while on a European river cruise last August. ‘‘Nursing has been a huge part of my life. I’ll miss the company of the good nurses I’ve met along the way.’’

ary Whitefield served countless people during her 53 years in health care. But after reporting for duty at Bacchus Marsh hospital for the final time last month, she recalled it was five intense years in palliative care, where she often treated people half her age, that had left the greatest mark on her career. ‘‘They still have a hold on my heart,’’ she says of the youngsters who died under her care. ‘‘I got quite close to a few of the younger ones – three were 19, 27 and 21 — and of course their families. I grew more during those five years, more than in any other area of nursing. ‘‘I was a bit burnt out by the end.’’ Mrs Whitefield says the unique experience of being welcomed into the private world of a dying stranger is a privilege. ‘‘You would get the entire family history, understand the family

ow in its 15th year, Instyle Dance has achieved outstanding results. Last year’s crop of students are working professionally and achieved excellent exam and competition results, says principal Kelly Cimbaljevic, who is fully qualified and recognised by the Commonwealth Society of Teacher of Dancing (CSTD). ‘‘Major achievements were William Moore winning Melton’s Got Talent and the Melbourne Dance Challenge hip-hop competition,’’ she says. ‘‘Claire McGoldrick’s success led to her touring the USA with the Glee Club, and Courtney Jaros made the top 20 for Moulin Rouge.’’ Instyle cabaret showgirls are working professionally and are available for corporate functions and events. They appeared on Foxtel’s Dance for Cancer initiative. Instyle caters for fun and fitness but also focuses on those who want to pursue a career in dance or become qualified teachers.

Talents tapped: The sub junior B tap class. Kelly says her professional, qualified teachers are a dedicated and committed team who turn out quality dancers while maintaining a fun, friendly environment.

eamwork and learning to be the best possible dancers are priority focuses for teachers and students at Peter Faux Dance Ensemble in Melton. ‘‘Ensemble literally means ‘together’, so we dance together, not in competition with each other,’’ principal Peter Faux says, adding: ‘‘True competition is competing with the self to be the best, not against anyone else. ‘‘In any professional dance company, artists dance together to present a performance, not compete individually for the audience’s attention.’’ The 28-year-old company has classes in contemporary dance, hip-hop, jazz, tap, classical, and Garuda and Pilates. ‘‘A strong emphasis is placed on good technique so students develop co-ordination, timing, balance and rhythm, which helps them with sports, not just dance,’’ Peter says. He says ‘dance industry’ is now a generic term describing any form of movement. But what he teaches his students — ‘dance technique’ — is more specific. ‘‘Dance technique is the only movement that uses all the body’s muscles rather than just sport-specific ones.’’

acked lunches can be a challenge when kids go back to school in hot weather. But while certain food and drink should be avoided, there’s still plenty that can be eaten and ways to keep lunches cool. Swapping the plastic lunchbox for an insulated cooler bag and inserting a frozen ice brick will do the trick. Adding a frozen drink bottle (with water or juice for the kids to drink later) will also help. Encourage littlies to keep their lunchboxes out of the heat during the day (where possible). In hot weather it’s best to bypass milk, yoghurt, fish and meat. Summer lunch options include tinned tuna or salmon with dry biscuits or rice cakes, banana bread, savoury muffins and dried fruit — apples, apricots and mango. For sandwich lovers, freeze bread the night before so it’s cool and fresh for lunch the following day. Rollups are another popular snack but they’re often packed with sugar so have a crack at making your own with this recipe:

Summer lunchbox: With the heat, what can you pack that will last? Preheat oven to 120 degrees. Peel, core and thinly slice five large apples and combine with a punnet of strawberries — halved with stems removed — in a saucepan. Cook for five minutes (or until soft). Pour mixture into a blender and mix until smooth. Pour mixture onto a baking tray — lined with baking paper — and spread evenly. Cook for about two hours or until dried and slightly sticky. Remove from oven and allow to dehydrate. Once ready, slice and roll up in plastic wrap to store.

Italian machine that’s all about style Ewan Kennedy road tests the Alfa Romeo Giulietta lfa Romeo went all German for a while with its model names, using boring numbers instead of proper names. That aberration is a thing of the past and we have just spent a most enjoyable week road testing an Alfa Romeo Giulietta. The car is all about style, particularly at the front where the bonnet flows upwards from the Alfa-shield grille. The five-door hatchback has been styled to look like a sports coupe thanks to cleverly hidden rear door handles. The result is a sporting look that hides what is, in reality, a practical family hatch. The Giulietta’s interior is reasonably spacious, although there are some compromises. Unless tall front-seat occupants are willing to give up some legroom, those in the back seats will find themselves cramped. Headroom can also be tight for tall, rear-seat passengers. Although the Giulietta is configured as a fiveseater, in the real world it is better suited to four, with an adult using the middle of the rear seat only in emergency situations. With no fifth

A

passenger in the car, the armrest with fold-out drink holders gives a feeling of luxury. The rear seats have a 60/40 split fold for when extra cargo area is needed above the standard 350 litres. Behind the rear seat centre armrest is a ski hatch. Multiple settings are offered in the way of a height-adjustable driver’s seat and a steering column that can be adjusted in four directions. Alfa Romeo imports Giulietta to Australia with a choice of two engines. Our test car had the 1.4-litre turbocharged MultiAir petrol unit with 125kW of power. Those who want even more performance can get a Giulietta QV with the turbocharged petrol 1750TBi engine that produces up to 173kW of power. Alfa Romeo Giulietta is a great-looking Italian machine from a company with a rich sporting heritage and will appeal to those looking for more than mere transport in their family hatch. Prices start at $36,990, not including government or dealer delivery charges.

Rich heritage: Only the Italians could make a functional family hatchback look sporting.

Century slows Marsh’s campaign BY TEO PELLIZZERI A PAUL Webber century has Sunbury well placed to halt Bacchus Marsh’s attempts to break into the McIntyre Cup top four after day one of their clash at the weekend. Webber was called on early at 1-8 and didn’t depart until Sunbury had 240 on the board as his 103 kick-started an innings of 9-331 at Maddingley Park. Jason McGann went on with the job, batting

with the tail to make 90. Bacchus Marsh’s revival has the team sitting sixth in the top division of Gisborne District Cricket Association with 27 points, looking up at Woodend (fifth, 30), Sunbury (fourth, 36) and Riddell (third, 36). But this weekend’s chase will prove a hard ask after Webber’s stands with Heath Boffey (69 for the fifth wicket) and McGann (80 for the sixth) turned Sunbury’s innings around after it fell to 4-91. McGann’s 45-run stand with Jack Landt (22)

for the ninth wicket ensured Sunbury would see out the day. Boffey was the third-highest scorer with 41, while Nick Strangio’s wicket-filled start to the new year continued as he claimed 4-85. At Wallan, the top team was stunned by Riddell’s bowling attack to be all-out 76 in just 32 overs. Matt Darby (4-13), Cameron Moran (3-23) and Bryan Brown (2-24) shared the wickets after Riddell won the toss and sent Wallan in.

Riddell faced 39 overs before stumps and ensured a first innings win by making 5-148. Moran (58) top scored on Saturday, while Darby (17no) and captain Heath Wadden (28no) will be at the crease should Riddell bat on this weekend. Woodend also claimed the first-innings points on day one as it rolled Rupertswood for 117 and reached 3-159 by stumps. Romsey failed to fire and needed its tail to wag to reach 129 all out, with Sunbury United already 3-109 at stumps.

Troubled Saints hit back BY TEO PELLIZZERI ST Anthonys’ domination of Gisborne District Cricket Association B grade looks set to continue after late wickets left Macedon reeling in the top four clash on Saturday. Macedon was on track to hold St Anthonys to a modest total batting first at Melton Recreation Reserve after a middle order slump, but lowerorder hitting from Cam Clayton helped the home team to 213. Clayton then took 3-7 in a devastating spell before stumps to leave Macedon at 3-23. Tim Dawe (5-60) was Macedon’s inspiration with the ball as his capture of St Anthonys’ Heath Fleetwood sparked a streak of 3-17 that left the side at 4-61. But Ryan Dobbie (35) and Wes Greig (33) steadied St Anthonys with a 62-run partnership for the fifth wicket before Clayton (75) came to the wicket to bat with the tail. Clayton and Joshua Evans (16 notout) shared a 62-run stand for the

ninth wicket to get St Anthonys to 213 off 51.2 overs. Key Macedon bat Chris Axton (12no) and Dawe (0no) will resume at the crease this weekend. At Gardiner Reserve, Gisborne overcame two early wickets to compile 227 against Bacchus Marsh. Jarryd Vernon (65) and Daniel Trevillian (29) came together at 2-18 but built an 87-run partnership to put Gisborne back on track. Brook Grumont (39) and Steven Docherty (35) were also in the runs, while Josh Lloyd (3-36) and Jack Powell (3-40) were best of the bowlers. In C grade, Diggers Rest Bulla Village made 8-245 off 75 overs batting first against Bacchus Marsh. A 4-29 collapse hollowed out the Burras’ top order after a 68-run opening stand between Kade Richards (39) and Kane Shaw (48), but Andrew Knight’s 65 ensured Diggers Rest Bulla Village would make it to stumps. Knight and Rhys Berry (26no) put on 80 for the seventh wicket.

Run glut adds insult to injury AN elbow injury restricted Melton star quick Shane Harwood to just three deliveries as Yarraville capitalised to plunder runs in Victorian SubDistrict Cricket Association at the weekend. Melton will chase Yarraville’s 9-277 this weekend after 124 from Matthew Harrison spearheaded the visitor’s day out at MacPherson Park. Harwood bowled the first three balls of the game but was unable to continue. Brad Jones still managed to capture an early wicket to leave Yarraville 1-1. But a 123-run partnership for the second wicket put Yarraville in control, with Harrison and Bradley

Shaw (50) setting the platform for the visitors to bat out their 80 overs. Jeremy Liddy claimed season-best figures of 4-49 and Duncan Harrison 3-74 as best of the Melton bowlers. Lions captain Mick Allen had an outstanding five catches and a stumping. Melton will chase the runs this Saturday. The weekend run chase will be followed on Tuesday, January 29, by Melton’s Legends & Heroes Twenty20 semi-final against Plenty Valley. Melton is defending champion, while its conqueror in the 2011 final, Oakleigh, is playing Brighton in the other semi.

Down the Hatch for juniors THERE would be little second-week joy for Melton’s junior representative teams as the Hatch Shield under-15s and Melton Juniors under-12 and under-16 sides went winless last week. The under-12s, playing Victorian Metropolitan Cricket Union Josh Browne Plate, fell 96 runs short against North West Metro before a narrow nine-run defeat to Federal District in its final game. Federal District made 4-174 batting first to Melton’s 165 all-out off 40 overs in reply. Jake Oakley (42no) and Zach Finn (25) were top scorers for Melton in its run chase. The under-16s, playing Jim Beitzel

Shield, claimed victory last Monday week against Eastern before finishing the tournament with defeat against North West Metro. William Thorton-Gielen was the star in Melton’s win against Eastern, making 100 not out retired as Melton Juniors won 8-187 in reply to Eastern’s 5-178. Melton’s Hatch Shield team fell to Roxburgh Park-Broadmeadows, Altona and Yarraville in the final group-stage games of the under-15 tournament. INBRIEF Twenty20 Bacchus Marsh will contest the Cricket Willow Twenty20 division 1 final after semi-final success against Laanecoorie-Dunolly at the weekend. The GDCA T20 champion now has the chance to add another trophy to its collection after the 42-run win on Sunday at Cricket Willow, north of Hepburn Springs. Bacchus Marsh made 7-175 batting first with Ian Spiteri’s 51 the top score. Nick Strangio then claimed 4-22 and Josh Lloyd 2-21 as Laanecoorie-Dunolly were all out 133. Bacchus Marsh will play Mt Clear in the final from 3pm this coming Monday at Cricket Willow.

BCA Darley preserved its seven-point buffer in the first grade top four with a four-run win against Coronet City on Saturday. The last-placed team pushed Darley but ran out of overs, 9-218 off its 45 in reply to Darley’s 7-222. Brian Wheelahan made 97 and Matt Cape 53 as the duo put on 111 for the third wicket. Tim Hughes earlier made 40. Darley snared run-outs in the field as Matthew Frew (2-22), Peter Moore (2-24) and Anthony Cape (2-39) shared the wickets. Darley’s 34 points keep it clear of fifth-placed Ballarat-Redan (27) heading into a two-dayer between the teams at Darley Park this weekend.

VWCA Essendon-Maribyrnong Park’s strength in depth showed Melton little mercy on Sunday in a nine-wicket Premier Seconds defeat. Melton batted first but was all out 81 in the 33rd over, before the Bombers reached 1-82 off 23.4 overs. The defeat leaves Melton eighth of 11 on the Premier Seconds table.

W-League Melbourne Victory will host the W-League grand final this weekend after a penalty shoot-out win against Perth Glory in the semi-final on Sunday. Victory and Glory were level 1-1 after 90 minutes and could not be separated after 30 minutes of extra time. US striker Jessica0 McDonald netted the winning penalty in the shootout after initially having her kick saved by Perth’s goalkeeper, only to be awarded a retake. Melbourne will play Sydney FC in the W-League grand final at AAMI Park on Sunday at 3.30pm.

Greyhounds A total of 59 greyhounds have been invited to compete in three Group 1 invitationals at The Meadows — including the Macro Meats Temlee, Rookie Rebel and Zoom Top on February 16 — to kick off the threeweek Australian Cup Carnival, with a total of over $1 million in prizemoney.

Gisborne home with a wet sail BY TEO PELLIZZERI GISBORNE District Cricket Association saved its best for last as it dominated the final of the Keith MacKay Shield and took home under16 representative victory on Sunday. An unbeaten century for Rowan Stott was followed by a devastating opening spell from Ryan Cumberland as GDCA beat Ferntree Gully & District by 140 runs to claim the Victorian Metropolitan Cricket Union title. A thrilling victory against Ringwood District in the semi-final was followed by a dominant final, 4-252 to Ferntree Gully’s 112 all out. Stott came in at 1-45 in the final and went about building his innings, sharing a 134-run partnership for the second wicket with Stephen Treweek (53) before his own forced retirement at 101 not out. Ben Whatman (28) went for quick runs late as the GDCA set 253 as the target off 45 overs. Ryan Cumberland then went about devastating the Ferntree Gully top order, claiming two wickets caught behind in the opening over to have the chasers reeling at 2-1. The innings never recovered as a collapse of 4-16 through the middle order left Ferntree Gully 7-56 on the way to being all out 112 in the 23rd over. Cumberland claimed 3-23 and Aaron Paterson 2-7 in the final. ‘‘They’d been building up to it and the grand final just showed the best in some quality players,’’ coach Peter Kavanagh said. ‘‘The early wickets really counted. ‘‘(Stott’s) a brilliant batsman, always well calculated in setting himself up. Takes a couple of overs to get himself set. Stephen Treweek was player of the series and in the final he showed that again.’’

Familiar feeling: Stephen Treweek celebrates clean bowling his Eastern Cricket Association opponent on the way to amassing 17 wickets for the carnival. Picture: Michael Copp Kavanagh said a strong bond on and off the field between the players had been the secret behind the representative team’s success. It proved a driving force as the team overturned its only two pool-stage defeats by winning the semi-final and final. Whatman hit two sixes in his 16 not out to get GDCA home in the semifinal, 5-182 with seven balls to spare chasing Ringwood’s 5-177. ‘‘Everyone there reckons it was one

of the best games of cricket they’ve seen,’’ Kavanagh said. ‘‘Chasing the runs the boys had it calculated . . . Benny (Whatman) is the type of player who, if we ever need quick runs, we can rely on. ‘‘There’s some great kids in this group, future leaders at their respective clubs.’’ Stott (241 at 80.33) and Treweek (192 at 32) led all run-scorers for the Mackay Shield, while Treweek led all bowlers with 17 wickets at 6.29.

MACKAY SHIELD Week Two Game 5: GDCA 103 (S Treweek 28) lt Ferntree Gully & District 4-105 (S Treweek 3-6). Game 6: Eastern 7-132 (S Treweek 3-20) lt GDCA 2-135 (R Stott 77no) Semi-final: Ringwood District 5-177 (S Treweek 2-28) lt GDCA 5-182 (J O’Malley 40, R Stott 30) Final: GDCA 4-252 (R Stott 101, S Treweek 53) d Ferntree Gully & District 112 (R Cumberland 3-23, A Paterson 2-7)

Loss no setback to Melton’s finals hopes BY TEO PELLIZZERI MELTON may have suffered a 39-shot loss to Sunbury, but it still managed to extend its lead in second place in Division 2 of Bowls Victoria Saturday Pennant. Sunbury has a sizeable lead at the top of division 2, section 1 and is all but certain of a top-two finish, while Melton still heads Werribee 2 for third after the 15-96 to 3-57 defeat. Sunbury leads the table with 184

points from Melton on 162, while Werribee’s weekend defeat gained it just two points, leaving it on 147. Central Highlands Bowling Division makes its return to the green this Saturday with an Australia Day round starting the final four rounds of the home-and-away season. In division 1 pennant, Kyneton will host Kyneton Golf, Gisborne hosts Lancefield, Bacchus Marsh plays Woodend, and Trentham will play Macedon.
