BACCHUS Marsh community leaders have met to discuss the future use of the town’s Avenue of Honour as the 100th anniversary of the start of World War I approaches. Ideas include the addition of details of each digger and creating an official commemorative tour. Cr Tonia Dudzik and representatives of the Bacchus Marsh Historical Society, Bacchus Marsh Residents Association and the Avenue Preservation Group (APG) met with Western Victoria Nationals MP David O’Brien to discuss plans. APG spokesman Damien Strangio hoped the group could become a national leader for producing meaningful commemorations, and it was hopeful of National Trust funding. ‘‘We are looking at a community effort here, including council,’’ he said.

Griffin said it was a ‘‘major concern’’ that council was considering a proposal which had a ‘‘very poor engineering design’’. ‘‘It would be undemocratic and wrong for this council to approve in any manner this new proposal from VicRoads, without full advice to the community,’’ he said. ‘‘Considering a majority on this council campaigned for election recently on the basis of supporting the Woolpack Road extension, it would be a dis-

grace to see such a change without reference to the voters.’’ VicRoads Bacchus Marsh freeway connection director Trevor Boyd said the acquisition of land for the upgraded eastern interchange was part of an existing public acquisition overlay, except for a parcel of land west of Flanagans Drive. Federal funding is available for the project until the end of 2013.

A NEW roads strategy for Bacchus Marsh does not address the town’s biggest traffic problem, according to Moorabool Council. Deferring a final decision on the uncosted VicRoads plan, the council said it would not keep trucks out of the town centre and the plan was expected to have a significant impact on landowners. The council said it had been placed in a difficult situation, with ‘‘limited information and an extremely short amount of time to consider’’ after VicRoads presented the plan to mayor Pat Toohey and chief executive Rob Croxford late last month. While council supports the plan in principle, a report says it has major concerns. The plan includes upgrading of the eastern freeway interchange, installation of east-facing ramps at Halletts Way, improved amenities at Moon Reserve, a pedestrian and cyclist crossing from the Lerderderg River to the Western Freeway, and electronic signage on Woolpack Road. It would require the removal of 17 elm trees and 23 river red gums. Detailed designs and costs have not been supplied. Mr Croxford said the new plan, prepared after controversial Avenue of Honour roadworks were rejected last Australia Day, came up short. ‘‘The solution does not take trucks off the main streets,’’ he said. ‘‘Council should not have to grapple with this problem as a consequence of the option presented.’’ He said it was important that the community be fully consulted over the plan. East Moorabool ward’s Cr Tonia Dudzik said the strategy was a ‘‘mixed bag’’. ‘‘Benefits include a reduction in over 30 per cent of local traffic or school traffic due to improvements in Halletts Way and increased safety,’’ she said. ‘‘No tree in the Avenue of Honour dedicated to a soldier will be prematurely removed, and Moon Reserve is protected and improved.’’ While council officers said the strategy was a ‘‘reasonable compromise’’, former mayor Pat

Fourteen fire tankers from 10 brigades were called to a small grassfire in Greendale at 2.30pm on Friday. It took crews about three hours to contain the blaze, which burnt almost five hectares. A CFA spokesman said the cause of the blaze at Vodka Track was unknown. A large contingent was called due to the fast-spreading nature of grass fires. ‘‘We sent a large team in to hit it hard early. Luckily, no damage was caused to any property,’’ he said.

MOORABOOL firefighters played a key role in saving a small town during last week’s Tasmanian bushfires. Bacchus Marsh’s Nathan Ractliffe, Chris Eggelston and Ricky Arandt were part of a Victorian deployment that flew into the Apple Isle on January 5. Heading up a small crew within the strike team, Mr Ractliffe said his crew was assigned to protect the town of Ellendale in the upper Derwent Valley. ‘‘Within half an hour our containment line had saved five homes,’’ he said. ‘‘The fire surrounded the entire town . . . it was out of control for four days. When we left on Friday it was only starting to come under control. But we didn’t lose a single home.’’ Mr Ractliffe said it was hard to compare the Tasmanian blazes with

Driver faces string of charges A Melton South man is likely to be charged with a string of offences after being caught speeding on January 8. The 21-year-old driver was clocked doing 160km/h in a 60 zone along Coburns Road and High Street, Melton. He later allegedly assaulted police with a pair of scissors, causing minor injuries. He will be charged on summons with conduct endangering life, serious assault, evading police and resisting arrest. His Commodore sedan was impounded for 30 days.

Mobility scooters off path Melton police say they are concerned at the number of people using mobility scooters on roads. The devices are limited to 10km/h and can only be used on footpaths.

Man dies in tractor rollover A man, 51, died when his tractor rolled and crushed him against a tree at Greendale on December 15. Police said the man had been grading a private driveway in Shuter Avenue.

Arsonists, nature wreak havoc BY ANDRIA COZZA and TARA MURRAY POLICE believe arsonists may be responsible for a spate of suspicious fires around Diggers Rest and Sunbury. Residents are being urged to report any suspicious behaviour as police investigate five deliberately lit fires in the area. New Melton inspector Stephen Mutton said there had been a string of accidentally and deliberately lit fires in the past two weeks. ‘‘We need the public’s help. If they see anything suspicious, like people in remote locations where there aren’t many houses, they should call triple-0 with car registration details. ‘‘If we receive a call from the public, we are more than happy to check the person and car out because the risk of a major fire is there.’’ Melton CFA senior station officer Jayson Hirt

little bit of a fire out and they went away to get some water. All of a sudden the flames came up from nowhere and they were massive. It came up like a big ball of smoke and it was just crazy.’’ About the same time, firefighters were also battling another grassfire in Sunbury, at Vaughan Street and the Nook. Last Monday, firefighters were called to fires in Sunbury, Diggers Rest and Clarkefield. Fires in Sunbury and Diggers Rest were lit within 20 minutes of each other. The Sunbury fire was only 150 metres from the location of the main fire the next day. The Diggers Rest fire was at the intersection of Watson Road and Buckland Way. Acting Inspector Ian Jones, of Hume police, said: ‘‘We’re looking at some persons of interest, just a list of people who like lighting fires.’’

said there had been 42 callouts since the start of the year. Hume police are investigating five fires they believe were deliberately lit. The fires occurred last Monday and Tuesday. One came within metres of homes near the Ashfield Estate in Sunbury. Three of the fires were in Sunbury, one in Clarkefield and one in Diggers Rest. Police are looking at the possibility the same person was responsible for all the fires. The largest fire last Tuesday started just after 1pm near the Calder Freeway between Moore Road and Baggy Green Street. It spread to Keeper Street and the Ashfield estate. A CFA spokeswoman said 20 hectares were burnt and a shed, car and some fences were lost. About 28 CFA and MFB firefighters and a helicopter fought the fire. ‘Keshia’, who lives near Keeper Street, said firefighters had been putting out a grassfire nearby. ‘‘I was with my partner. Victoria’s Black Saturday fires of 2009, but Tasmania’s unpredictable weather, changing typography and a lack of firefighting numbers and experience made it hard work. ‘‘They’re a bit undermanned and our experience was needed,’’ he said. Fund cuts add pain to elective surgery list BY BEN CAMERON MORE than 200 Djerriwarrh Health Services patients will be forced to wait longer for elective surgery because of funding cuts. Hospital president Michael Tudball said he was concerned about the impact on the community, announcing the board had no option but to accept chief executive Bruce Marshall’s recommendation to slash theatre and surgical ward activity at Bacchus Marsh and Melton Regional

Hospital. The move follows last month’s announcement of $107 million in funding cuts statewide. Djerriwarrh’s cost-cutting measures include elective surgery, in-patient bed closures and operating theatre capacity reductions from March 29 to April 14 this year. Mr Tudball said the deduction of $400,000 funding halfway through the financial year was unfair. ‘‘It’s totally unreasonable to pull $400,000 halfway through a financial

year when activity levels and budgets are already in place.’’ Mr Marshall said the measures would not affect emergency or urgent theatre procedures. A spokesman for federal Ballarat Labor MP Catherine King said any reduction in funding to individual health services was a decision for the state government. ‘‘Because Victoria’s population has not grown as quickly as expected and health inflation is not as great as expected, the agreed funding formula

means the Commonwealth contribution to Victoria’s health system will not grow as much as the Baillieu government would like,’’ he said. But state Health Minister David Davis said the federal government’s statistician found Victoria’s population had grown by 75,400 — not decreased by 11,000 as previously stated. ‘‘The federal government plans to rip more than $100 million out of Victoria’s public hospitals with a scam based on dodgy population figures,’’ he said.

Tough mudder: Scott on new course for life FIFTEEN minutes is all it took to convince Bacchus Marsh’s Scott Cornford to lose a massive 41 kilograms and prepare for his first Tough Mudder challenge. Last year at his workplace in Campbellfield, Mr Cornford, 33, underwent a free WorkSafe WorkHealth check. Employees completed a short questionnaire; had their waist circumference, blood cholesterol, blood pressure and blood glucose measured; and received immediate information and advice based on their results. It was then Mr Cornford discovered he had dangerously high blood pressure and was at risk of type 2 diabetes. At 136 kilograms and with his wife pregnant with his third child he knew it was now or never to make a change. ‘‘A couple of months after the check, when I found out my wife was pregnant I thought, this is not the way to bring up a child,’’ he said. Mr Cornford enlisted the help of a personal trainer and began eating more fresh fruit and vegetables.

He’s now preparing for the challenge of competing in the Tough Mudder 20-kilometre obstacle course, in a team with six friends at Phillip Island on Saturday. ‘‘I’m a bit nervous,’’ he said. ‘‘I did a 10-kilometre run on Sunday to prepare for the course. The last couple weeks I’ve been doing specific training sessions. My trainer has got me jumping into his pool fully clothed and then running. ‘‘When I started with him last year he was about to do Tough Mudder. I saw it all on television and thought I’d really like to do it.’’ Mr Cornford said he had been obese all his adult life. For the past 15 years he had weighed more than 100 kilograms. Now at 93 kilos, he says he has more energy to play with his three children, and he aims to continue losing weight and gaining muscle. Residents to pool ideas BY BEN CAMERON MOORABOOL residents will have six weeks from February to comment on plans for the new Bacchus Marsh Indoor Aquatic Centre. To be built on the grounds of the outdoor pool on Grant Street, the new centre will feature a 25-metre, eight-lane pool, gymnasium, multipurpose rooms, changerooms and car park. Residents can view preliminary plans at the outdoor pool, Bacchus Marsh’s Lerderderg library, council offices in Darley and community halls and recreation centres in Ballan. They can also provide feedback via the council’s interactive Have Your Say website. Council will soon nominate two councillors for chair and deputy chair positions on the pool’s reference group and seek community

representatives through a public nomination process. The group will spearhead a fundraising campaign and oversee the final design of the pool. As reported by the Weekly, the council applied for a federal grant to help fund the project in early December. But ratepayers could face a special charge over a decade to cover any shortfall. Consortium secretary Jocelyn Williams said council should not sting ratepayers and the group would work hard to deliver a $1 million community contribution. Donations are tax deductible as the project has been registered with the Australian Sports Foundation.

Winning form Young Bacchus Marsh golfer Jack Crawford (pictured) has helped his state team secure a national title. Competing against the best primary school golfers from New South Wales, Queensland and South Australia, Jack was a key part of Victoria’s winning 12-years-andunder state team at Bankstown Golf Club. He shot par in both rounds and received a medal for his efforts.

Being listened to, believed, vital BY ANDRIA COZZA A FREE counselling service is encouraging survivors to seek help following the announcement of a Royal Commission into child sexual abuse. Western Region Centre Against Sexual Assault CEO Jane Vanderstoel said it could be more difficult for survivors to manage their symptoms because of constant reminders in the media and public discussion of abuse. ‘‘Victims may find themselves experiencing nightmares, flashbacks, an inability to sleep, intrusive thoughts and issues with trust and intimacy,’’ she said. ‘‘Many have tried to forget their experiences of sexual assault as children. With the issue being raised . . . some survivors no longer wish to keep their experiences hidden.’’ Ms Vanderstoel said counselling was invaluable. ‘‘The value is, in the first place, being believed and understanding that the fault is not theirs. ‘‘The service helps them understand more about the impact of

sexual assault in their lives.’’ Western Region Centre Against Sexual Assault (CASA) provides outreach services for people across Melton, Wyndham, Brimbank, Hobsons Bay and Maribyrnong. Ballarat CASA provides a service to Bacchus Marsh residents. Ms Vanderstoel said further investment was needed to meet the demand of residents seeking professional counselling. She said a multi-disciplinary centre, such as the ones announced for Gippsland and Bendigo in last year’s state budget, was a long-term goal for the western region. ‘‘We would like to see that sort of model in the west, for children and adults. The model, where police, child protection and other agencies are co-located, has shown to increase reporting.’’ The centre’s free counselling service is open to both men and women. INSIDESTORY

From here to maternity: Women are reclaiming their birth rights as the role of the midwife is reborn. SARAH HARRIS reports ven now they’re grown and have families of their own, Mary Little’s children still refuse to accompany her shopping in Bacchus Marsh so frequently is Djerriwarrh Health Service’s most senior midwife intercepted by ‘babies’. “People are forever stopping me on the street,” Little chuckles. “They’ll come up with some strapping lad and say, ‘Mary, this is little Jimmy you delivered 20 years ago. Do you remember him’? “‘Well,’ I’ll say, ‘he’s changed a bit’.” The obstetrician who lives in the town generally manages to pass incognito by walking around with her hat pulled down, but no one misses Mary. “They will either watch you sidelong, thinking ‘that’s that old cow who made me push’ or they proudly produce the evidence and say ‘remember this one or that one’,” Little reveals. In 26 years working at the Bacchus Marsh & Melton Regional Hospital (BM&MRH), the now maternity services manager has attended the births of thousands of babies. During that time she has also witnessed profound changes both in the role of the midwife and social attitudes toward childbirth. “In the past we were obstetric nurses and you just did what you were told. You didn’t do deliveries, in fact you were rarely even in for the delivery. You didn’t even examine the women yourself because that was not your role. You were really just a handmaiden to the doctor and, after birth, to the women. Now there is an opportunity to have a career path as a midwife.” In the maternity unit of BM&MRH, it’s the midwives who run the show; providing the antenatal and postpartum care as well as being responsible for most deliveries, with doctors

working alongside where required according to consensus guidelines. “We are really a unique unit for our size. There is no other hospital in Australia that really does what we do,” Little says. Since 2004-05 the number of births at the historic hillside hospital with its special Anzac pine — a descendant of a tree on the Gallipoli battlefield — has more than doubled, reflecting the

The 912 births recorded here last financial year are expected to be eclipsed by 2012-13 figures with a record 118 expectant mums booked this month and a further 90 next month. The unit caters for public patients considered at low risk of complications, allowing women to give birth locally in the most relaxed environment a clinical setting allows. “These are well

women. As midwives we want to make midwifery very much a normalcy of life. It is a process, not a sickness,’’ says Little. In keeping with this philosophy the BM&MRH — with its 11 beds and two birthing suites — boasts one of the quickest turnarounds of any maternity unit in Australia. Mothers stay an average of 2.3 days compared to 2.8 days nationally.

I also invite you to come along to a sausage sizzle and meet with myself and your Ward Councillors at our Meet the Mayor sessions to be held over the next couple of months. The sessions are an opportunity to chat with Councillors in an informal setting and discuss issues that concern you. For more information please visit www.melton.vic.gov.au

Throughout January, Council is encouraging residents to have their say on two key projects. The draft Eynesbury Recreation Reserve masterplan is currently out for public consultation. As part of the community engagement, Council officers will be at the Eynesbury Discovery Centre on Sunday 20 January from 10am to 12 pm to hear your thoughts.

I am looking forward to meeting many of you at our Australia Day celebrations on Saturday 26 January at the Willows Historical Park in Melton. There will be family entertainment, the presentation of the community achievement awards and a citizenship ceremony which will see around 180 new citizens welcomed into our community.

Residents can also have their say on concept drawings for the redevelopment of the Courthouse Plaza in Melton. Drawings are on display at the Melton Visitor Information Centre, High Street Melton. For more information on these projects visit www.melton.vic.gov.au/haveyoursay

delivering joy, happiness “We don’t get many who say straight up ‘I want it because I want it’, but we do get some who come in and say, ‘Can I have an epidural?’ and just sit up there on their iPhone having a lovely time while everyone else is doing all the work and they are barely engaged in the process. “But there’s a lot to be said for women having a sense of achievement when she has laboured virtually under her own steam with a little pethidine or some other drug. “We live on our experiences. They teach us to be strong, stalwart and to cope.

hanging out the washing, now they’re consulting their iPhones. “Google has given us a lot of grief,” Little laughs. “You know there is an app that can tell you when you are in labour – as if your iPhone can tell how far dilated you are! Yet some women are using that as an indication of when they need to come to hospital.” Dr Google also does little to prepare the mum-

Happy 2013! While the festive season is now behind us, many residents and their families are still on holidays, so I encourage everyone to be safe in the community and on our roads and make this summer enjoyable and memorable for everyone. As I’m sure you’re all aware, Saturday 26 January is Australia Day. It’s an important day when we all come together to celebrate what’s great about Australia and being an Australian. Around 180 Melton residents will take the Citizenship Pledge this Australia Day. As the child of immigrants, I understand the significance this day plays in our personal histories, and would like to

to-be for reality. Little, like her colleagues, would like a dollar for every woman who has said to her over the years, ‘I can’t cope. I can’t do it any more’. “I say yes, you can do it and you are doing it. “The biggest disappointment for us is the overuse of epidurals. It takes away that selfawareness and, I believe, that self-confidence in your own ability to manage.

wish all our new citizens happy and prosperous lives not only in Australia, but importantly, in the Melton community. It’s also budget time again, and Melton City Council has committed to the rigorous planning process by inviting residents to attend a Budget Engagement Session, where you will have the opportunity to talk about Council spending in the 2013/2014 financial year. Councillors and staff will be on-hand for informal talks which we are hoping will highlight the programs and services that you feel warrant specific support.

Our community, our future

The laborious budgeting process will then begin and Councillors and staff will work together to deliver a strong financial plan that’s equitable, sustainable and representative of the municipality’s unique and dynamic needs. The Budget Engagement Session will take place on Saturday 2 February between 10am and 4pm and you can come along at any time during that period, at the Melton Community Hall. “A lot of what we as midwives do is support women to think for themselves and manage for themselves, but we still fight against that grandmother image of what should be done in hospital,” Little admits. She also believes the perception of being in labour is much more intuitive, adversely so, than it was years ago. Where women in the past would have put up with a bit of discomfort and gone on

‘‘They make us the women we are.” For a midwife, this must also at times include an acceptance of death amid so much life. “The bad outcomes blow you away,” Little concedes. “They absolutely shatter you. It still happens, even in a society that expects everything to be perfect. “So yes, it can be very tough work, but we all love it. It’s a profession you can feel good about because you help bring a lot of happiness to so many people. What’s not to love.”

Dumping is uncharitable, say Salvos BY MELISSA CUNNINGHAM NORTH-west residents are using a vacant block next to a charity store as an illegal dumping ground. The lot beside the Salvation Army’s Deer Park store is littered with rubbish, furniture, torn mattresses, smashed televisions and bags of odorous household waste. Dzafer Dzaferovski, who lives directly opposite the site, said he was disgusted by the state of the land. ‘‘It’s just appalling; it has become an eyesore because people are using it as a landfill so they don’t have to pay someone to pick up their rubbish,’’ he said. Mr Dzaferovski said Melton Council last year placed large rocks outside half of the land to stop cars from driving onto the site. But the other side of the lot remains open. The site is only metres from houses and restaurants. Another resident, who asked not to be named, said she had seen youths picking up smashed televisions and electrical goods and placing them in front of oncoming traffic. ‘‘It’s dangerous and having an open site like that encourages young people to hang around there at night,’’ she said. ‘‘A few times there has been rubbish thrown all over the road, so myself and other residents have to go onto the road and pick it up before somebody drives over it.’’ Salvation Army sustainability manager Donald Munro said the charity spent $10,000 last year on a perimeter fence to stop illegal dumping as waste removal costs increased to $60,000 a year. ‘‘Last year it really went beyond useful donations so we put a fence around the store to try to stop it happening while the store was closed. It stopped unwanted items being dropped at the store but began the trend of people dumping items at the [neighbouring] site. ‘‘Although the vacant lot is not owned by the Salvation Army it continues to affect business at the store . . . people are starting to associate the store with the rubbish dump next door.’’ Melton Council’s operations general manager Greg Wood said the owner of the neighbouring property had been ordered to clean it up. ‘‘Council’s litter education and enforcement officer has met with representatives from the various properties at this location to discuss initiatives to address illegal dumping in the area,’’ he said.

Snakes in the grass a death trap for pets BY ANDRIA COZZA CATCHERS are being called on to remove large numbers of snakes from yards across Melton and Moorabool. Melton West catcher Trevor Clarke said that since hot weather arrived in November, he had been called at least twice a week to remove snakes.

Most of them were found near stormwater drains in backyards. ‘‘Snakes found near drains are seeking water or are found on untidy lawns, which are attractive for them to hide in.’’ Mr Clarke said there had been no reports of people being bitten, but several family pets had died from snake bites. ‘‘I had to wrap up a Labrador who was trying to play with the snake.

Dogs often bark at snakes and try to engage with them.’’ Mr Clarke said people should never approach a snake. Anyone bitten should apply a pressure bandage and splint to the affected area and seek immediate medical treatment. ‘‘Don’t remove the venom from the area because a sample of the venom is needed so you can be treated properly.’’ A Department of Sustainability and Environ-

ment spokesman warned people against trying to catch or kill snakes. Householders can reduce the risk of snakes taking shelter in their yards by removing rubbish and cutting long grass. Snakes are protected under the Wildlife Act. More details: phone DSE on 136 186 or contact a licensed snake catcher.

Keeping lid on landfill waste Melton Council hopes new bins at the city’s major aquatic centre will keep 1400 litres of recyclables out of landfill each day. Thirteen dual waste and recycling bins, made of recyclable materials, have been installed at Melton Waves to encourage residents to ‘‘do the right thing’’. The bins were introduced as part of a national Keep Australia Beautiful program supported by Coca-Cola. Pictured are KAB Victoria project advisor Gary Mogford, Coca-Cola’s Andrew Sawyer and deputy mayor Bob Turner.

Council to trial town bus route BY BEN CAMERON ISOLATED residents could find it easier to get into town as part of a community bus service being trialled by Moorabool Council. The FrontSEEAT (Social Employment Education Access Training) transport connections project, to run on Thursdays and Fridays, will determine the feasibility of a permanent bus service that would operate within 15 kilometres of Ballan and in and around the town. Cr Paul Tatchell said many elderly residents living in rural locations would benefit from the service. ‘‘Young people would also be more self-reliant, being able to use the facilities in the town. It’s easy to forget that people in our region are

being isolated and disadvantaged where personal transport is difficult or unavailable. Access to the trains would provide much-needed assistance for people to travel to Ballarat, Bacchus Marsh and Melbourne. ‘‘Living in the rural sector presents a myriad of challenges for those who don’t own a motor vehicle or for whatever reason are incapable of driving.’’ Cr Tonia Dudzik said a community bus would go some way to help residents who suffered from a lack of independence. ‘‘Community buses are an asset to a wide range of community groups, including the aged and disabled.’’

New council to drive change

Caution urged on coal seam gas

At the last Moorabool Council meeting of 2012, councillors voted to seek more information regarding VicRoads’ new plans for an upgraded eastern interchange and improvements along Hallets Way. However, it was disappointing to note the inaction of the previous council. Following the rejection of the reckless and costly Woolpack Road gamble on Australia Day 2012, the Avenue Preservation Group met with council last March. A wide-ranging series of suggestions and alternatives were passed on, with a view to achieving the best possible outcomes for the community. We urged council to work urgently and cooperatively with the state government and VicRoads. It seems that the last council did no such thing, thus hampering progress and planning, or discussion of requirements and options. I trust that our new councillors will be more proactive and collaborative, without jeopardising $34 million worth of improvements to our community.

Much has been spoken about the alleged rights and wrongs of coal seam gas mining. I have been privy to both arguments. The Baillieu government currently has a moratorium in place on new coal seam gas exploration permits. There is currently no coal seam gas production in Victoria. As a farmer, I fully understand the importance of preserving and enhancing the land, and view with caution any activity that may negatively impact that position. Exploration and mining must be accompanied by

suitable impact statements and regulation. As such, I urge readers to have their say on the draft national framework for coal seam gas. The public consultation period is open until February 18. The national framework includes discussion about the banning of chemicals like benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene in hydraulic fracturing; a tightening of regulations; water management and monitoring; and well design. Anyone with an interest in this matter should read the draft framework at scer.gov.au/workstreams/ land-access/coal-seam-gas

My steak-out in Buenos t’s fair to say my experience of arriving in Buenos Aires wasn’t the best, but the city was yet to show its beauty and culture. Three things Aussies need to be aware of in the city are: paying the $US100 to enter the country, eating dinner late (from 9pm) and the time difference — Melbourne is 13 hours ahead of Buenos Aires. After taking all this in, I looked around for my airport transfer — an Argentinian holding a sign with my name on it. Unfortunately, he was nowhere to be seen. I caught a taxi, communicating as best I could in traveller’s Spanish with the driver replying in broken English. To my surprise, the 50-something-year-old was listening to an English pop radio station. After speeding the whole way into the city and nearly running into another car — they’re crazy drivers over there — we arrived at the cent-

rally located hotel. Things looked up from here. There’s so much to see and do — like indulging in a famous Argentinian steak, joining a bus tour of the city’s hot spots, attending a tango show, or visiting the colourful town of La Boca. For 80 Argentinian pesos (about $16), travellers can join a three-hour bus tour visiting the north (wealthy area) and the south (poorer). It also includes a visit to Parliament House, which is painted a dusty pink, and La Boca, a ‘shady’ area famous for its brightly coloured buildings and soccer

stadium. Sinking your teeth into a large, juicy Argentinian steak is something travellers shouldn’t pass up either. Traditionally, locals eat theirs welldone but tourists can have it how they like. For $US20, I had a big medium-rare steak with vegies and dessert — what a bargain! Another ‘must do’ is visiting Recoleta Cemetery where famous people like Eva Peron (Evita) are buried. The gravestones are large and many have rooms in front of them for visitors to pray, view photos or light candles. While in Recoleta, a walk to the market might yield souvenirs for loved ones. For a night on the town, dinner and a tango show is a real treat. I loved watching the talented dancers dressed in beautiful costumes moving to the Spanish beats.

Greens rebound, but title slips from grasp BY TEO PELLIZZERI A STRONG Ballarat top-order denied Gisborne District Cricket Association the chance to claim Junior Country Week in under-15s last Friday. Gisborne Green bounced back from a defeat in its opening game to make the final but didn’t put enough on the board as it lost by seven wickets to Ballarat Gold. Four Bacchus Marsh players were in the GDCA squad. The Bulls’ Alex Porter (26) was the only Gisborne Green batsman to pass 20 as the team reached 134 after winning the toss and batting at Eastern Oval. Ballarat Gold then made 3-137 off just 35 overs in reply. Gisborne Green lost its opening match to Maryborough by 10 runs but fought back on day two with a three-wicket win against Ballarat Blue. Chasing 109 for victory, Gisborne Green slumped to 5-47 and then 6-70 before Nathan

Marshall (34no) and Bacchus Marsh’s Baiden Cracknell (19) put on 35 for the seventh wicket to move the chase within four runs of victory. Josh Whatman (68) then top-scored on day three as Gisborne Green (4-164) beat Central Highlands Development Squad (136), with Alex Porter taking 3-13. Porter led the team for runs with 125 at 31.25, while Bacchus Marsh’s Bradley Croxford took seven wickets at 9.43. Gisborne White was unable to win any of its four matches in under-15s, losing the division 4 final to Ballarat Blue by 20 runs. Blue made 6-102 batting first before bowling out Gisborne White for 82 in reply. Gisborne’s Dylan Featon top-scored with 27 and led the bowlers with 2-4. Featon top-scored for the week with 135 runs at 33.75, while Brandon Nicholls claimed six wickets at 11.50. In under-13s, top-age Gisborne Green lost the division 1 final to Ballarat Gold by eight wickets, while bottom-age Gisborne White won the division 4 final against Ballarat Blue by 14 runs.

St Anthonys powers on ST Anthonys remains the team to beat in Gisborne District Cricket Association B grade as the ladder leader won by 130 runs against Sunbury at the weekend. The chasing pack is still 12 points adrift of St Anthony’s (60 points) with Gisborne (48) and Sunbury United (36) battling to stay in touch. St Anthonys made 210 off its 40 overs before restricting Sunbury to just 80. Gisborne chased down Riddell’s 113 with 5-121. Macedon won comfortably with 5-255 too good for Bacchus Marsh, all out 172 in reply. In the battle of the bottom two, Sunbury United (1-98) chased down Wallan’s 97. In C grade, Diggers Rest Bulla Village claimed a big win in the race for top spot as it won by two

wickets against second-placed East Sunbury. The Burras’ lead at the top of C grade is now out to seven points, 55 to 48, after the 8-126 to 9-124 victory. East Sunbury won the toss and batted, with Chris Watson (46) and Ben Whatman (24) sharing a 70-run stand for the sixth wicket. Diggers Rest Bulla Village slumped to 4-26 before opener Kade Richards (47) found a batting partner in Blake Robinson (29) to push the score to 5-84. Another spurt of 4-28 left the Burras 8-112, before Harry Narasimman (14no) and Robert Hayes (0no) shared the match-winning stand. Ashfield (7-238) defeated Romsey (8-114) to move to 42 points and stay within reach of the top two.

Rupo sinks as Bulls roar RUPERTSWOOD is fast running out of chances to stave off McIntyre Cup relegation after being cast adrift on the bottom of the league with its defeat to Bacchus Marsh on Saturday. Rupo is holding up the top division of Gisborne District Cricket Association with just two draws and eight losses after a seven-wicket defeat to the Bulls. Rupertswood’s six points trails Romsey (seventh, 24), while Bacchus Marsh climbed to 27 and sixth with the 3-109 to 108 win. Rupertswood reached 1-52 batting first, but Warren Hall’s dismissal for 12 was the first wicket in a mid-innings collapse of 6-23. Opener Mark Ryan’s 23 was the top score, while Bacchus Marsh’s Nick Strangio claimed 5-17. Kieran Atkin made 52 not out from No.3 to guide the chase as Bacchus Marsh reached the target in the 21st over.

At Greenhill Oval, Wallan seized top spot on the table as it rolled previous incumbent Sunbury United by nine wickets. United won the toss and batted but struggled to build partnerships after Lance Watts (13) departed at 1-37. Fellow opener Nathan Morse top-scored with 37 as United failed to put together a partnership bigger than 16 for the rest of the innings, being bowled out for 106. Wallan’s Justin Colliss dominated the chase with 87 no as the home team reached 1-109 in the 26th over. The result means Wallan (42) leads the ladder from Sunbury United (39) with Riddell (36) third from Sunbury (36) on percentage. Sunbury kept the losses coming for early-season high flier Romsey with an 8-209 to 143 all out result. In the weekend’s other match, Riddell defeated Woodend in spite of a century for Woodend’s Warren Else.

Melton starts year on winning note BY TEO PELLIZZERI MELTON received a new-year boost as its pursuit of Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association ladder leader Caulfield tightened up after a solid win against Werribee on Saturday. While Melton (4-136) comfortably accounted for Werribee (9-135) by six wickets, previously unbeaten ladder leader Caulfield was rolled by Altona. It means Caulfield still leads the South West First XI table with 45 points but Melton (second, 39), Werribee (third, 39) and Ormond (fourth,

39) are all back in the hunt for top spot. Melton sent the home team in at Williamstown Cricket Ground on Saturday and immediately went about strangling the run rate. Quicks Shane Harwood (2-20) and Paul Halfhide (1-17) kept runs to a minimum before Ashley Armstrong (2-7) made an immediate impact in his first appearance in the first XI for the season by capturing Williamstown captain Craig Sheedy caught and bowled. Sheedy’s departure sparked a mid-innings collapse of 4-24 that left Williamstown 6-91, however the tail wagged to get the home team to

the end of its 45-over allocation with 9-135 to defend. Patrick McKenna was Melton’s other multiple wicket-taker with 2-15. Melton lost openers Mick Allen for a duck and Michael Alexander for three but bounced back with Anthony Gale (59no) steadying the chase with David Kirk (19) and Harwood (38) in partnerships of 51 and 68 respectively. Melton reached 4-136 in the 40th over, winning with 31 balls to spare. The Lions start a two-dayer against Yarraville (ninth, 21 points) at MacPherson Park this Saturday.

In Second XI, Melton’s eight-wicket loss to Yarraville failed to dislodge it from the top of the table. The Lions posted 9-180 batting first with Andrew Cristofaro’s 70no the top score. But an unbeaten century from Williamstown’s Nathan Bratby guided the visitors to 2-181 in reply. In North West Third XI, Melton is four points out of the finals places after making 125 in reply to Williamstown’s 6-252. Toby Armstrong (3-28) was Melton’s best bowler in the defeat. In North West Fourth XI, Melton (9-149) fell short in its chase of Williamstown (5-168) to slip to 10th, 18 points out of the top four.

INBRIEF

Pressure run tells

BCA Darley chased down Mt Clear to climb into the First Grade top four on Saturday, 5-144 in reply to 141 at Darley Park. The win lifted Darley to 28 points, three behind third-placed Mt Clear (31) and one ahead of fifth-placed BallaratRedan (27) while previous fourth-place holder North Ballarat (24) slipped to sixth. Brian Wheelahan (3-34) and Matthew Frew (3-21) combined to break a 60-run Mt Clear stand for the opening wicket and reduce the visitors to 5-88. Peter Moore (2-16) was Darley’s other wicket-taker. The chase wobbled with two wickets for two runs at 2-24 but captain Matt Cape (77) steered the innings to 5-144 by the end of the 41st over.

VWCA Melton struggled against premiership contender Napoleons/Sebastopol on Sunday, going down by 92 runs in Premier Seconds. Napoleons/ Sebastopol made 6-211 batting first before bowling out Melton for 109.

Lions bounce back after losses MELTON’S Hatch Shield team will try to climb into the top four and title contention tomorrow after its first win of the tournament last Thursday. The under-15 representative team lost its first two matches of the shield carnival last week but a 27-run win against Sunshine has kept Melton in contention for a semi-final berth with three matches still to be played. Williamstown beat Melton by 30 runs in the opening game, 151 to 121, with only Drew Locke (22) passing 20 for the Lions. Liam Hocking had earlier taken 3-14 as best of the Melton bowlers. The bats also misfired in game two as Melton was all out 67 before Werribee made 8-150 off its 45 overs. Daniel Hynes finished with 3-5 as

the stand-out Melton bowler. The Lions hit back in game three though, making 148 batting first before restricting Sunshine to 8-121 in reply. Melton has the bye today before matches away at Roxburgh ParkBroadmeadows tomorrow, home against Altona on Thursday and away at Yarraville on Friday. In Victorian Metropolitan Cricket Union, Melton Junior Cricket Association’s under-16s lost three from three in the Jim Beitzel Shield before yesterday’s match against Eastern, played after the Weekly went to print. Melton made 5-139 in game one against Ringwood District who won with 5-170 in reply. In game two Melton was all out 59 batting first against City of Moorab-

bin who won by eight wickets, 2-62. In game three Melton posted 102 batting first and pushed Diamond Valley, who squeaked home 8-103. In Under-12 Josh Browne Plate, Melton split its opening week with two wins and two losses. Joel Cadman (40no) held the innings of 5-96 together in game one, however Eastern won by seven wickets, posting 5-160 in reply. Cadman again reached the compulsory retirement of 40 not out in game two as Melton posted 6-148, holding on to beat Box Hill Reporter District, 9-143 in reply. Melton was all out 107 batting first in game three as Diamond Valley won by 10 wickets, but bounced back to win game four against North Metro.

ROUND three heats of the Warehouse Sales Central Victorian Pacing & Trotting Championships were held at Lord’s Raceway Bendigo this month. The Tim Butt (Melton) trained and Chris Butt driven My Temudjin was most impressive in taking heat number three for the pacers (C2 or better) over 2150m after a torrid passage. Giving a little skip as the tapes released from barrier five, My Temudjin hit his straps very quickly, settling one/one with Jaccka Tom spearing straight to the front from outside the front row, before being eased to trail the well-supported Paya Dues going for three wins in a row. Wasting no time, Chris Butt was not going to let Paya Dues have it easy, vacating the prime spot with My Temudjin to park in the open after travelling half a lap. When Paya Dues galloped, possibly by jumping a shadow midrace, My Temudjin was checked, allowing Jaccka Tom again to assume control and lead racing for the bell. Pouring on the pressure heading along the back straight, My Temudjin was able to stride clear when Jaccka Tom galloped. Although tackled strongly along the sprint lane by Just Live Life, which had enjoyed a cosy trip along the markers from the pole, My Temudjin scored by a metre in a rate of 2-00.2, with True Happiness using inside runs for third 5.9 metres away in third place. Since joining the Butt stable My Temudjin has done well, winning two and finishing close up in another two. Read Len Baker’s full Sulky Snippets column at meltonweekly.com.au
