‘Our ambulance going AWOL’ BACCHUS Marsh is often without local ambulance coverage for extended periods, a paramedic has revealed.

With Ballan and Melton offering the closest backup for emergencies, Stan Burtt said Bacchus Marsh’s single ambulance did more than half its work outside the area. ‘‘It’s not uncommon for the Bacchus Marsh ambulance to be out of town for extended periods of time, over two hours,’’ he said. ‘‘It does more than 50 per cent of its work out of the local area in places like Melton, Sunshine and Footscray. It can be a two-hour round trip if we have to drive to Ballarat or Sunshine hospital.’’

residents were without local ambulance support for 14 hours on two occasions since November last year.

The report on unfilled shifts shows the station was unattended during night shifts on November 3 and March 11.

Melton also had no staff on April 20 last year, and only one officer working on February 9.

Mr Burtt welcomed the arrival of a new peak period unit from mid-April that will operate from 11am-11pm. Usually stationed in Melton, it will now start and finish its shift in Bacchus Marsh. ‘‘It should have a positive effect,’’ Mr Burtt said.

The report said 1112 shifts across the state were not filled in the past year due to shortages of experienced paramedics, leading to patients waiting hours for an ambulance.

A union spokesman said there would be a ‘‘huge gap’’ in response time, even for a code-one emer-

gency, if paramedics at Ballan, Melton and Bacchus Marsh were unavailable. ‘‘It could be up to 40 minutes.’’

Ambulance Victoria metro-west regional manager Simon Thomson said the service made every effort to ensure paramedics were rostered to each shift. ‘‘Just like anyone else in the community, paramedics are human and they get sick from time to time. ‘‘We see similar peaks and flows to these leave days as many other businesses do. ‘‘Paramedics obviously have choice in what they do when they’re off-duty and if no one volunteers for that overtime shift, it is unable to be filled.

“When we upgrade our Rockbank roster to run 24 hours in April, we’ve made the decision to move the existing peak period unit to our Bacchus Marsh branch and extend its hours of operation to provide even better coverage to the community.”

Serving up a centenary The first serve was made at the Diggers Rest Tennis Club on March 5, 1913.

One hundred years later, the club is still going strong and will celebrate its centenary at a reunion on Sunday.

Secretary Kim Bouchier (pictured with her mother Audrey Bateman) says the event is open to anyone who has been associated with the club in the past 100 years. Mrs Bateman, 97, is the oldest living former member. Ms Bouchier, herself a member since 1969, said: ‘‘There’s been a lot of changes since 1913. It’s been lovely to play, on nice new courts. That was a big change, going from cement to grass courts and to actually having a clubroom.’’

The reunion starts at 2pm and will include a barbecue.

Guilty plea for murder

Alarming figures on detectors a wake-up call MELTON firefighters are urging residents to ensure their smoke alarms are working, with new figures revealing there were 70 house fires in the area last year.

It comes as the CFA and MFB launch a ‘change your clock, change your battery’ campaign to get residents to change their smoke alarm batteries when daylight saving ends on Sunday.

Of the 70 fires in the city, 13 were in Melton South, 12 were in Melton and 10 in Caroline Springs.

Melton CFA senior station officer Jayson Hirt said not having a working smoke alarm could have horrific outcomes. ‘‘Examples that I’ve seen where smoke detectors aren’t installed have had devastating effects on life and property. That compares to a number of good examples where occupants have been alerted to a fire early from a smoke alarm, giving them the ability to exit and notify the brigade. ‘‘Leading into winter, which is the predominant time for house fires, we encourage all residents to either install or ensure batteries are in working order.’’

A recent fire safety survey found 38 per cent of Victorian households had only one smoke alarm installed and 28 per cent at times disconnected them to prevent false alarms. CFA deputy chief officer Steve Warrington said smoke alarms should be located throughout the home, including between each bedroom.

CONVICTED killer Steven James Hunter has pleaded guilty to the murder of Sarah Cafferkey, 22, whose body was found at a Point Cook house. She had been stabbed to death.

Hunter, 47, pleaded guilty in Melbourne Magistrates Court last Wednesday morning to the murder of Ms Cafferkey in Bacchus Marsh last November.

Police said Ms Cafferkey had been stabbed multiple times at a flat in Bacchus Marsh on November 10 before her body was moved.

Hunter pleaded guilty to the murder before magistrate Luisa Bazzani and will appear in the Supreme Court on April 11.

He had previously been convicted of the 1986 murder of Jacqueline Mathews, 18, in a fit of jealous rage after his advances outside a Tullamarine supermarket were rejected.

He stabbed Ms Mathews seven times in the heart and throat.

Shire keeps pen in pocket on coal mining

BY BEN CAMERON MOORABOOL Council has yet to decide if it will commit to an anti-coal moratorium supported by six other councils, almost a year after it was first urged to do so by the Moorabool Environment Group.

MEG member Rose De La Cruz asked the council on June 6 to join 78 community groups and businesses calling on the state government to suspend all new coal and coal seam gas developments until independent investigations into

impacts are complete. Mrs De La Cruz said there had been no word from the council, despite a ‘groundswell’ of public concern about the possible impacts of coal and coal seam gas mining. ‘‘We, the MEG and other concerned community members, feel we have been treated in a dismissive and disrespectful way. We feel let down by our council.’’

She said it was important councillors were aware of the community’s concerns. ‘‘We are aware that three new councillors stated clearly

options, prepare a report and present it to councillors at a meeting in May.’’ Greens candidate for Ballarat Stephanie Hodgins-May said a favourable decision by the council would be an indicator of support for renewable energy. ‘‘In recent visits to Ballan and Bacchus Marsh, residents, farmers and business owners have expressed to me their grave concerns about the detrimental impacts of coal and coal seam gas mining on rich agricultural farmland and human health and tourism in the region,’’ she said.

during their campaigns that they are against any new coal mine for the Bacchus Marsh area.’’

Bass Coast, Colac Otway, Yarra and Port Phillip councils have all signed the moratorium to ban all on-shore coal and unconventional gas operations until the impacts have been properly investigated.

Moorabool chief executive Rob Croxford said a decision by the council was expected in May. ‘‘The council is organising a briefing from various stakeholders regarding a request to sign an anti-coal moratorium. We will consider our

Rail duplication ‘a decade away’

BY STEPHANIE ZEVENBERGEN COMMUTERS will have to wait up to 10 years before works begin to alleviate stress on the Ballarat train line from Melton, a new report reveals.

Public Transport Victoria released its Network Development Plan: Metropolitan Rail last week, outlining transport projects needed to expand capacity.

Key projects include duplication of the rail line to Melton, to be implemented within 10 years, and electrification to Melton within 15 years.

Melton Labor MP Don Nardella labelled the report as ‘‘nonsense’’ and said work needed to start

immediately. ‘‘This is an appalling back-track on the position we had in government in 2010. We had duplication earmarked for 2016,’’ he said. ‘‘We are in the fastest growing region in Australia and we’ve got to wait 15 years. It was [the state government’s] decision to put more people out here as a growth area.’’

Melton commuter Adam Craig, who catches the train into the city five days as week, said it was a shame work would not be carried out sooner. ‘‘It’s a bit disappointing that [the government] is not willing to invest in the infrastructure sooner.

They keep advertising more and more residential blocks out here so there’s more and more people who need to utilise the services,’’ he said.

The report states that population growth, road congestion, petrol price rises and environmental awareness have contributed to more people using public transport.

It found a 70 per cent growth in train patronage in the past decade, stretching the capacity of the network. ‘‘Public Transport Victoria has examined how travel needs are likely to change as Melbourne grows and how the demand for train travel will evolve,’’ the organisation’s chief executive Ian Dobbs said. ‘‘We have examined alternative ways of expanding the network to meet these needs and identified the most cost-effective way forward.’’

A THIRD kindy room was opened at Kororoit Creek Early Learning Centre last week to help meet increasing demand on Melton kindergartens.

The centre underwent a $300,000 refurbishment, converting community space into a third kindergarten room.

The extra room means total enrolments in the four-year-olds group at the centre will rise from 120 to 186.

The centre, at Kororoit Creek Primary School, is managed by the school.

Principal Natalie Bakai said enrolments had increased rapidly since the school opened in 2011. ‘‘We started with 52 children and we now have 160 four-year-olds and 700 primary school pupils,’’ she said. ‘‘The extra room will meet the need for extra places within Melton.’’

Ram, bam, it’s ‘Jackie Chan’

BY BEN CAMERON A MADDINGLEY resident has been allowed to keep a ram as a pet despite the objections of neighbours.

Moorabool Council has ordered Godwin Aquilina to construct an internal fence to contain ‘Jackie Chan’ after several reports of the ram charging nearby residents.

In a terse, hour-long debate where councillors exchanged heated words and East Moorabool ward’s Cr Tonia Dudzik was cautioned for bad language, the council permitted Mr Aquilina to keep the seven-year-old merino on his Love Close property.

Cr Pat Toohey argued Mr Aquilina was not in a financial position to provide sufficient means to keep the ram under control. ‘‘It has a tendency to escape. We need to put aside emotion; it’s not a suitable home for the ram,’’ he said.

Cr Toohey’s comments met an angry rebuke from Cr Dudzik, who said it was rude and offensive to make assumptions about what a family ‘‘can and can’t do’’. ‘‘How dare we take it away? If we take it away we’re a pack of bastards. Give the ram a chance.’’

Mr Aquilina said he would ‘‘bend over backwards’’ to keep his sheep, which had been a family pet for seven years. ‘‘My little girl’s first words weren’t mum or dad, it was baa,’’ he said.

“He’s a much-loved pet, like a pet dog. He comes when called. He thinks he’s a dog; he’d lick you to death.’’

The council also ordered that the ram be desexed within 14 days of a permit application, subject to a veterinary report.

The permit would be immediately revoked if the ram escaped again.

A rural access worker with Moorabool Council, she’s the embodiment of what she preaches: that opportunity and independence can change the lives of those less able.

That’s why she’s championing the National Disability Insurance Scheme as a way to empower more than 1000 Moorabool residents who need daily help to get by. She said its greatest legacy – apart from slashing waiting lists and relieving pressure on carers – would be putting disabled people behind the steering wheel of their own lives. ‘‘There is evidence that suggests that when people with disability are given greater choice and control over their

services, they achieve better life outcomes,’’ Ms Watson said. ‘‘Most people with disability strive to be independent. The NDIS will assist with this independence.’’

Ms Watson has remained in control of her own destiny despite being struck down with polio when she was six.

When she became pregnant at 26 with the first of her three children, she opted for a manual wheelchair. ‘‘This meant I was able to care for my baby much more confidently and safely than if I was still dependent on callipers and crutches. I count myself as a very fortunate person. I’ve had the opportunity to gain an education, work, have a family and be accepted for the person I am, not the disability I have. If the NDIS does nothing else, I hope it provides these same opportunities to others in the future.’’

With 1305 Moorabool residents needing help with their day-to-day lives

due to disability, and more than 13,000 in Melton, Ms Watson admits local access is hampered by limited resources. ‘‘Many businesses were established when people with a disability were not as present in the community and physical access for people who use wheelchairs for mobility was not a consideration. ‘‘Fortunately, there is now an increasing understanding that people with a disability are very much part of all communities, and regulations and changing attitudes mean access in all its forms is becoming more evident.’’

Last month, the Senate gave the federal government the go-ahead to set up the scheme, including launch sites that will begin in Victoria in July.

In its first year, the NDIS will provide care and support for up to 10,000 people with significant and permanent disability.

Haunted jaunts The old homesteads in Melbourne’s north-west make it a favourite site for ghost hunters. Tara Murray joined one tour searching for spectres.

lex Mifsud suddenly stops talking and asks: ‘‘Did anyone else see that?’’ He looks for another moment, then says: “There was a lady just ran across the room. It’s the first time I’ve seen someone run across this room like that.’’ But it wasn’t just any lady. It was a ghost.

It isn’t the first time Alex claims to have seen one, nor will it be the last. Misfud is one of the hosts of Lantern Ghost tours. On this occasion he is taking a group through Point Cook Homestead. ‘‘People get pushed, poked, their hair gets lifted,’’ he says. ‘‘Some people hear their names being called and others can smell and hear things. Every night is different. Some nights there’s lots of activity, then other nights we don’t get as much.’’

Jacqui Travaglia started Lantern Ghost Tours Williamstown in 2009. She and her partner Andrew Wishart have expanded the tours to Altona, Point Cook and Eynesbury homesteads, and overnight tours to places like the infamous J-Ward asylum in Ararat.

Travaglia has seen ghosts for as long as she can remember. ‘‘I grew up in a haunted house in Williamstown and I used to see a little old woman walking around the house and hear footsteps that were unexplained. A little old woman used to live there with her husband and she liked to cook. ‘‘Then I moved to England and there’s a lot of history and ghost activity there as well. I did every single ghost tour I could do and stayed at every haunted place I could. Then my friends would come along with me and go ghost hunting. Their friends started to join and then I thought, I could get a bit extra for this and cover my costs, and it developed into a business.’’

Travaglia says the Point Cook Homestead is one of the most active places for ghosts, with at least 12 there.

a cat, a couple, an RAAF pilot and the ghosts of the property’s owner Thomas Chirnside, his brother Andrew and his wife Mary. ‘‘Point Cook Homestead has the most activity and we haven’t had a tour without any action. It’s not scary, but a welcoming tour. ‘‘At Eynesbury we believe there’s a lot of spirits there as they use to hold wakes there. When somebody died they would hold a wake and put the body on the lounge-room table and people would come and see the body and they would keep a visual on it in case it woke up. That’s why we believe there’s a lot of bodies trapped. ‘‘The scariest [place] is the J-Ward asylum [in Ararat] which housed the criminally insane. We stay overnight there and it’s quite uncomfortable. We had one guest we believe was possessed and we’ve had people locked in the cells, which is physically impossible.’’

Travaglia says many people who look for ghosts are sceptics, who want to be proved wrong or right. ‘‘We have a lot of sceptics come to our tours. We have a number of different tours catering for those who want to research it more with equipment, and others involving the general public. ‘‘Some walk away more sceptical, but have a good night having enjoyed the stories. The best thing is when they change their minds. Sceptics are more scared than the non-sceptics when they experience something. ‘‘For us it’s about the history, the stories and the ghosts. Some of the stories are more interesting than fiction.’’

‘‘My wife was the believer. But I have since changed my mind. There’s whistling upstairs, unexplained noises, stomping upstairs, glasses break, chairs and cutlery move and you can come in the morning and the stove top is on. We get lots of people taking photos on the stairs and they will send them in and we’ll see a person in the background.’’

Levey isn’t the pub’s first owner to change his mind about ghosts.

Frank Nelson and his wife bought the hotel in March 1984. It took only three days for Nelson to experience his first ghost. He was pushed down the stairs resulting in an ankle broken in three spots. The final straw was when Nelson felt a hand between his leg and the plaster cast. He and his wife moved out a short time later.

Levey says there are three known ghosts who haunt the pub, including a Chinese man who was found hanging in the stables after a fight over gold, and Irish man Patrick Regan, who was murdered after talking about finding gold. The third is a little girl who was murdered by her father and thrown in the well at the rear of the hotel. The girl, who was intellectually disabled, is often seen around the staircases; a number of children have reported seeing her.

Levey says many people come to the pub, just to see if they can see ghosts. ‘‘There’s three types of people who come to the pub to see the ghosts. You have the people who come to take photos, you have the psychics and mediums, and then you have those dressed all in black who come on the full moon at midnight.’’

The Blackwood Hotel is another which claims it’s the most haunted pub in Australia. ‘‘I’m not a great believer of ghosts, but you get a sixth sense about things,’’ says Heinz Mueller, who took over the hotel three years ago.

‘‘When I’m doing my rounds, you get a feeling around the [former] morgue and you feel the hair on the back of your neck stand up. Staff members, some who have been here for over 20 years, won’t work by themselves, so that says something.’’

He says there are four ghosts at the hotel and describes them as ‘‘friendly.’’

The most famous are Laura Dalton, who was burnt to death in the 1940s, and a miner who sits next to the fire. ‘‘Everyone who comes here, comes to see if they can see the ghosts. We take them on tours of the cellars and downstairs. Unit three has been built into the morgue and people come from far and wide to stay in that room.’’

In 2007, a TV series, Haunted Australia, visited nine locations looking for ghosts, three were in Melbourne’s outer north-west. They visited the Coach & Horses Inn and the Blackwood Hotel, as well as the Melton Equestrian Centre.

The old Sunbury University campus, which was originally the Sunbury Lunatic Asylum, is another spot where ghosts have been reported, while there’s reports of a maid being seen at Salesian Bridge also in Sunbury.

Travaglia puts this down to the fact that a lot of the old buildings are still in existence. ‘‘I think the reason for that is that we we have a lot of old homesteads like Eynesbury and Point Cook. On the other side of the city, they have lost a lot of that and the history with it.’’

Back at Point Cook, sadly for Misfud, no one else sees the lady running across the room. On this occasion, it was the only ghost to appear on the tour and many people are left disappointed.

Opinion will always be divided on whether ghosts are real, but for people like Mifusd believing is only the beginning.

Fuel storage ‘no health risk’

Cr Tonia Dudzik said she was appalled to find sections of a roadside in Long Forest in a shocking state when she pitched in for last month’s Clean Up Australia Day. ‘‘People need to show respect for the beautiful shire we live in and and stop littering and dumping rubbish,’’ she said. ‘‘It’s a disgrace what we picked up — cigarettes butts, beer bottles and fast-food wrappers.’’

Cr Dudzik also assured Moorabool residents that the storage of an aluminium byproduct at a Rowsley site does not pose a health threat.

There’s no way known it’s a health risk.’’

Bobby Macumber has road-tested her schtick at the Melbourne Fringe Festival, Adelaide Fringe and countless open mic nights since she began writing Miss Interpret last May, but the nerves remain. ‘‘I’ve never had a gig when I haven’t been nervous,’’ she says. ‘‘I just try to be as prepared as possible before every gig. I don’t know too many comics who haven’t been nervous before stepping onto the stage, including comics who’ve been in the business over 10 years. That’s half the excitement!’’

Miss Interpret invites the audience into her world as an unqualified teacher, with personal stories that venture from the heartwarming to the everyday hilarity that’s the life of a child.

It will be Macumber’s second solo show at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, after her debut last year.

She got her stand-up comedy legs after hosting sporting events and now runs a comedy room in Carlton, which prides itself on having a 50-50 split between male and female performers.

Ravenhall Prison Project – community information The Department of Justice, in conjunction with the Ravenhall Prison Community Advisory Group (CAG), invites interested individuals, businesses and community groups to attend information sessions on the proposed men’s prison at Ravenhall.

The new prison is to be built adjacent to the Metropolitan Remand Centre and the Dame Phyllis Frost Centre (women’s prison). The CAG, which includes representatives from the Cities of Melton and Brimbank as well as the local community, is providing input on local matters relating to the development.

Subaru rectifies a missing link Outback has CVT-diesel hook-up, writes Murray Hubbard ubaru has spiced up its Outback range – and increased the number of potential buyers – by linking a sporty new CVT transmission to its AWD turbo-charged diesel models.

The addition comes as part of an Outback facelift with external changes kept to a minimum, but a raft of mechanical improvements to enable the CVT-diesel link.

This is the first time a Subaru CVT transmission has been hooked up to a high-torque boxer turbo-diesel.

The long-overdue diesel/auto combination could not come at a better time for the Japanese maker.

Last year SUVs accounted for 27 per cent of all vehicle sales in Australia and this year that figure is running at 30.4 per cent, meaning that almost one in every three vehicles sold in Australia is an SUV, a significant

change in Australian buying patterns.

The lack of a diesel boxer engine until 2012 held back Subaru Outback sales and then the lack of a diesel/auto combination meant it was not competing against rivals that had the soughtafter pairing.

The new Subaru Outback 2.0D CVT comes in two equipment grades, with the upper grade being called the Premium.

The base model is $42,490. Premium gets an electric sunroof, leather trim and eight-way driver’s seat.

The real bonus in this new CVT is the lack of engine or transmission noise into the cabin.

Driven at normal speeds the Outback 2.0D CVT is possibly the smoothest and quietest car on the market under $50,000.

Subaru expects around 100 sales a month of this variant.

Kia SUV is versatile and functional Alistair Kennedy road tests the latest version of the Sorento ia Sorento is the larger of two SUVs from the ambitious Korean importer. The smaller Sportage is aimed more at the youth and small family market while the seven-seat Sorento is effectively a crossover people mover with some off-road ability in the AWD variants.

The latest version of the Sorento was launched here in September 2012. Although there were external changes, they didn’t change the overall look of the vehicle.

In people mover mode the management of Sorento’s interior space is critical and the Kia designers have managed to juggle the various passenger/luggage permutations nicely. As is invariably the case with mid-sized seven-seaters the third row is best left to pre-teen children.

The third row of seats folds flat to provide up to 1047 litres of luggage space with the centre seats in place but drops to 285 litres with all seats occupied. The back row seats are split 50/50 to allow some extra seating flexibility. Folding both rows of rear seats opens the rear up to a van-like capacity of 2052 litres.

The choice of two- or four-wheel drive is rapidly becoming the norm in the latest breed of SUVs, something that makes lots of sense because the majority of buyers neither want nor need drive to all four wheels.

Kia Sorento comes with a choice of two engines, 3.5-litre V6 petrol and 2.2-litre turbodiesel. Previous criticisms of the Sorento’s ride and handling have been addressed with the use of ultra high-tensile steel contributing to an 18 per cent increase in torsional rigidity improving ride comfort, handling and crash protection.

The seats are comfortable and the ergonomics for the driver are very good.

On the road both the petrol and diesel versions are surprisingly spirited vehicles and hills and rapid overtaking are dispatched with ease.

Kia Sorento is a neat and attractive SUV that offers plenty of options for a large family looking for a single vehicle that can handle a variety of tasks.

Hall factor stokes Broadford

BY DANIEL PAPROTH LONG-suffering Broadford fans will start the season cheering in full voice as Barry Hall lines up for his old club against Lancefield on April 7.

Harley Hammond Reserve has been buzzing since late last year, when Hall, who played his junior football for the Kangaroos, signed on the dotted line.

Hall, who played for Wangaratta last year, will play at least six Riddell District Football League matches for Broadford in 2013, balancing his commitments with Fox Footy.

The six games will ensure he can play finals should Broadford make it. The signing is huge for the club, which has struggled on the field in recent times, finishing in the bottom four in the past two seasons. Hall, good mates with senior

coach Aaron ‘Skip’ Bray, said he was stoked to come back to where it all began.

“I’m very excited,” he said. “It’s good to come back to the club and give them a little bit back because they certainly helped with my career.

“We’ve got a lot of older local players, my mates, coming back, so we should have a fairly solid side. ‘‘The good part about it is the players are all local. We haven’t gone out and spent a heap on players from Melbourne.”

And while he admits he hasn’t been training the house down over the pre-season, Hall says he’s fit and firing and hopes to once again slot bags of goals for the Kangaroos.

“The body is all right. To be perfectly honest I haven’t trained too hard for it, but now the season’s here I’ve got a routine going and I’ve

been going for runs to keep the belly down a bit.

“Hopefully the town gets behind us and we can do something.”

Bray too is excited about the season ahead.

“When I put my hand up for the coaching gig I asked Barry the question one night and he said he would come give us a hand,” he said.

“It’s brilliant. It was just a question asked over a beer. The town and the club is abuzz.

“We’ve lacked experience on the ground, so obviously with Barry and a few other senior blokes coming back it’s all balancing out pretty well.

“We’re not going to make any wild accusations but hopefully we can improve the playing list and jump up the ladder a bit. The boys are moving the ball pretty well and they’ve got a lot of miles in their legs since October.”

While the fanfare surrounding Barry Hall’s arrival will preoccupy the Broadford v Lancefield game on Sunday, Melton Centrals is away at Wallan first on Saturday. Soccer Melton Phoenix kicks off in FFV state league 5 west this weekend when it travels to Greenvale United on Saturday. The game will be Greenvale’s first in the FFV state league structure. The match kicks off at 3pm at Barrymore Road Reserve in Greenvale.

Big V Basketball Melton Thoroughbreds will head east for its second long roadtrip of the season when it plays Mornington Breakers this Saturday. The Thoroughbreds are zero-and-two and still looking for a first win under new coach Grant Spencer. Mornington is one-and-one on the season so far. The Victorian Women’s Football League will provide much of the talent for a one-off AFL match between Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs. The game will be the curtain-raiser for the AFL home-and-away game between the Demons and Bulldogs at the MCG. It is the first time women’s teams will play as AFL representatives in member club guernseys. The women’s Melbourne and Western Bulldogs teams will be filled via a draft. Players aged 17 and over from the 2011 All-Australian team, 2012 high performance squad and 2013 state teams will be invited to nominate for the draft, which will take place early next month and be managed by the AFL.

THEY’RE the start-up club that rocked the WSUCCA and took home a premiership in their first year of existence. Within months the Eynesbury Eagles went from a team with eight blokes training and looking for ring-ins to a title. TEO PELLIZZERI caught up with the Eynesbury team to find out how the Eagles took flight.

New kids on block let bats do the talking FIRST IMPRESSION Visitors to Arthur Westlake Memorial Reserve in Melton got an impression immediately of what they were in for.

A big Eynesbury banner, complete with the club’s sponsors, hung on a fence at the southern end of the ground.

Walking onto the field was a team sharply dressed, in gear with a graphic of a swooping eagle on a shirt that would not look out of place in the Big Bash League.

But this isn’t premier cricket or a cashed-up club with international imports playing on turf.

This is the Western Suburbs United Churches Cricket Association one-day competition. ‘‘There might have been an element of, ‘Jeez, these blokes are serious’,’’ club treasurer David Lane speculates.

And while the opponents may have been immediately struck by the set-up sported by the new kids on the block, the cricket is ultimately what did the talking.

STARTING UP Matt Scalzo was a cricketer who had enjoyed both team and individual success with KealbaGreen Gully in the North West Metropolitan Cricket Association, but he was looking for a change.

With three young children, Scalzo, who had lived in Eynesbury since March 2010, wanted to ditch the weekend drive and play closer to home. ‘‘If you didn’t play golf there weren’t many ways for the Eynesbury community to get together,’’ Scalzo said. ‘‘I wanted to do something while I was young enough, start something so that by the time they’re ready, my kids can play junior sport locally.’’

Eynesbury Auskick and Milo Cricket coordinator Heath Pritchard, a former Melton Lions sub-district player now with Caulfield, was a go-to person for Scalzo. ‘‘He is well and truly in tune with what was going on about the area . . . he explained that juniors weren’t ready [for organised teams] yet. ‘‘So the aim became getting a senior team up and running.’’

Without a ready venue in Eynesbury for matches, Melton council offered Westlake Reserve and things were ready to roll.

RECRUITING Scalzo, now the club’s president and coach, put out flyers and more than a dozen responses came in. A committee quickly formed, then members came and went, and eventually the numbers settled. At eight. ‘‘We went from 12-14 players to eight at our first training session,’’ Scalzo said. ‘‘I was still happy. With eight, surely we could find three ring-ins to make an XI.’’ The team had 13 available by its final practice match of the summer.

Committee member Stuart Peters said players kept coming once the team was on the park.

Soaring Eagles: Eynesbury’s David Lane, Justin Siedlecki, Stuart Peters and Lee Williamson. ‘‘We knew guys who wanted to play cricket and they just kept coming. Next thing you know, a second team is up and running and it got big.’’

Lane said: ‘‘We’d gone from a handful of people to having 36 on our books.’’

Eynesbury ended up fielding a ‘‘Green’’ and a ‘‘Black’’ team in the WSUCCA one-day competition, with a bit of crossover of players between the two. ‘‘Looking back, you wouldn’t change a thing,’’ Peters said. ‘‘It showed that we didn’t necessarily have a first or second XI.’’ EARLY SUCCESS Eynesbury split its opening weekend with Green winning and Black losing, but round two was an early defining moment.

Reigning division premier Altona Roosters welcomed Eynesbury Black to Altona Green Primary School by plundering 4-321 off the prescribed 35 overs.

Up stepped brothers Justin (84) and Matthew Siedlecki (159), and Peters (60no), who blasted Eynesbury to 3-325 in reply with two overs to spare.

At home, Eynesbury Green rolled Melton South for 91 and knocked off the target with nine wickets to spare.

‘‘They just came out and gave it to them,’’ Peters said. ‘‘That was the moment when everyone said, ‘These boys are serious’.’’

Scalzo said the results earned Eynesbury a bit of respect from the rest of the league.

When Green won a battle of unbeaten teams against Western All Stars by 93 runs in round five, Eynesbury knew it could match the title contenders.

PREMIERSHIP GLORY Eynesbury Black went on a losing streak between rounds two and nine but started a revival to move into top-six contention in the new year.

One invaluable result to the club overall was when Black rolled minor premiership contender Charles Sturt University in mid-February.

It meant Eynesbury Green seized top of the table, and could afford to show no favour to its clubmate when the pair clashed in the penultimate round of the season. The Greens won by six wickets.

As a result Eynesbury Black missed the finals, but Green’s minor premiership proved critical, as a rain-out on grand final day handed it the division title. ‘‘It wasn’t unbelievable by the end . . . the team had the players who could do it,’’ Scalzo said.

‘‘I needed the players to believe in themselves and believe in me, and what we were trying to achieve. ‘‘Unfortunately the grand final got washed out, but the hard work did get rewarded.’’

Chris Lunn captained the Green team while Justin Siedlecki ended the campaign with 695 runs at 53.46 and Blair Sole with 37 wickets at 6.86.

FUTURE PLANS Putting junior teams on the park and an oval in the Eynesbury township are the next big goals for the club, in conjunction with help from the council, township and sponsors.

At this stage the senior team’s goal is 40 registered players to field a first XI in WSUCCA A grade synthetic, a second XI and a third XI in the one-day competition. ‘‘It’s great to teach players who have never played before and develop them into better players,’’ Scalzo said. ‘‘As the estate builds we seem to be getting a lot of kids between nine and 11 years old. We’re hopeful of putting an under10s and under-12s in next season, putting out the call for junior coaches. ‘‘Winning the premiership helps . . . when we talk to sponsors, prospective players, we’ve got a good brand.’’
