The well-known Dimmeys sign is still intact while most of the building is being taken down in favour of 82 apartments and a supermarket. The famous clocktower and Swan Street facade will remain.

It is good to read that cyclists and drivers are looking out for each other (‘‘Women riders are on a roll’’, MTW, March 13). But the fact that pedestrians often seem completely unaware they are sharing the same space remains a major hazard.

Nowhere more so than on the Merri Creek Trail and the Yarra Trail, where hundreds of dog-walkers go up and down each day without being in control of their dogs and not using a leash. Dog-owners seem to have no sense that they could be in much trouble if their pets caused accidents for cyclists and other pedestrians.

Constant monitoring and penalties for unleashed dogs are the only way to get some regulation of noncompliant owners and to prevent accidents and injuries.

Train to nowhere The long-awaited Doncaster rail study has resulted in a proposal that is extremely expensive, but in stage one does not even access Doncaster shopping centre, the major regional activity centre. Stage one is proposed to terminate three kilometres away in an underground station at the isolated Park + Ride facility.

The study’s claim that six trains an hour from Doncaster could not join the existing Clifton Hill rail line to access the city in stage one is nonsense. Train capacity exists now; and new, state-of-the-art signalling would raise capacity further.

Clearly the view of politicians and bureaucrats is that much-needed suburban rail extensions should be ‘‘gold-plated’’ and specified to become unaffordable.

Pauline, in her letter ‘‘Back in traffic’’ (MTW, March 13), asks ‘‘where is the evidence that people are not using their cars to commute but rather are using a bicycle?’’

It is on page three of the same issue of the Melbourne Times, Pauline. It is available from the Bicycle Network Victoria website, which shows key routes are showing increases, for example of 62 per cent on Swanston/ La Trobe since 2012.

It’s available from the Australian Bureau of Statistics Census data. It’s available from sales figures showing bikes selling strongly. It’s available from the VicRoads web page on cycling stats, which states ‘‘cycling is now used in 11 per cent of journeys

MORE than $350,000 of Darebin ratepayers’ money could go down the drain after the state government confirmed it would sell a former school site in Reservoir.

The former Ruthven Primary School is among 200 schools to be sold under plans to offload vacant sites.

The school buildings have already

been demolished, as has a barbecue area used by residents.

Since the late 1990s, the council has spent more than $350,000 on barbecues, landscaping and sportsgrounds at the school in exchange for residents being allowed to use the area outside school hours.

Ruthven Primary is the fifth school in northern Darebin to be shut and sold off in almost 20 years. Keon Park Tech and Merrilands and Lakeside pri-

mary schools have all been either closed or merged with other schools, while Lakeside Secondary College has been demolished, and its land is likely to be sold. As well, Burbank Primary School merged with Keon Park Primary in 2008, with the land used by the Northern School for Autism.

Under Department of Education rules, other government departments have first option to buy the land, followed by the local council. If there is

no interest, a public sale is held.

Darebin council has written to the education department expressing interest in buying the Ruthven site.

Premier Denis Napthine said the proceeds of the school sales would boost state revenue and fund general government options. But opposition leader, Daniel Andrews said he doubted the money would be spent in communities where the sites were sold.

Estate land rally turns into victory party MORE than 100 tenants and their supporters gathered at the Atherton Gardens public housing estate in Fitzroy on Sunday to celebrate the state government’s decision to suspend plans to sell open land around Fitzroy and North Richmond’s public housing estates.

The rally had been planned as a protest against the planned sell off, but late on Thursday, Minister for Housing Wendy Lovell announced that the state government had applied to the federal government to suspend plans to redevelop the sites.

The state government began a master planning process to rejuvenate the estates almost two years ago, proposing a mix of public and private housing, plus offices and retail space on the sites.

Ms Lovell said the plans had been widely misrepresented by opponents, including Yarra City Council, which has been in conflict with the government about what it claimed was a lack of consultation.

‘‘This ill-informed scaremongering is ongoing, and has caused the residents undue stress,’’ Ms Lovell said.

In 2010, the federal government awarded the then-ALP state government $175.3 million from its Housing Affordability Fund to build 547 units for both public and affordable private housing within the grounds of the Fitzroy, North Richmond and Prahran estates.

The government has not suspended its plans for the Prahran estate.

Socialist councillor Stephen Jolly, who has led the Hands off Melbourne’s Estates campaign, fighting the planned sell-off of open land, hailed the decision as a victory for the community.

Ms Lovell’s surprise announcement followed a meeting between five of the state’s most powerful unions, which jointly agreed to support the HOME campaign, including the Construction Forestry Mining Energy Union and Electrical Trades Union.

Funding cut for statewide youth service

Reservoir school site up for sale

A SCHOOL-based program that supports at-risk students across the Yarra and Darebin areas is set to close in June.

Berry Street Victoria runs the School Focused Youth Service in the inner north. Established in 1997, the service targets 10 to 18 year-olds, providing links with local services and support to those suffering homelessness, alcohol or drug abuse and mental health issues. It also helps keep students engaged with school.

The Department of Education and Early Childhood Development cut funding for the statewide service in November following a review into how best to support atrisk youth. It found the current program needed to ‘‘better define’’ its project objectives and policy directions.

Berry Street regional director of the north west region, Craig Cowie, said there would be fewer opportunities for students to access services that could ‘‘vastly improve outcomes vital to health, wellbeing and education attainment’’ once funding runs out in June. ‘‘In a school setting, where the day-today planning and students’ immediate needs take priority, this is a vital resource that will be noticeably missed,’’ Mr Cowie said.

Richmond MLA Richard Wynne said the program was ‘‘critical’’ to the well-being of young people in the area and called on the government to restore funding immediately.

The program is currently offered in government, independent and Catholic schools across the state.

Estate to pay in parking row

Counselling for worker

The estate of the man dubbed ‘‘Australia’s worst landlord’’ has been ordered to pay Yarra City Council $10,000 in costs relating to a series of breaches of car parking by-laws. The Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal has ordered the estate of Francis (Frank) Michael Cassar, his widow, Sandra Cassar, and their company, Inner City Towing & Smash Repairs, to pay the amount within 120 days. In 2011, council officers seized vehicles belonging to Mr Cassar following numerous complaints that they and other company vehicles were parked in breach of its planning permit. The council sought the costs because it claimed constant delays and requests for adjournment by the defendants increased its legal expenses. Last year, Consumer Affairs Victoria made an order against Mr and Mrs Cassar and their company, Betta Housing, over numerous breaches of residential tenancy laws.

The Yarra City Council sub-contractor who found a man dying on Johnston Street, Fitzroy, on March 17 has received access to counselling. The worker found Shaun Wright, 21, about 5am, just before he died from stab wounds. A council employee who later attended the scene also has been given access to counselling. A Preston man, 25, has been charged with murder.

Slide to slip away The old Northcote slide at the centre of a community fight will be removed due to safety concerns. Darebin council decided this month to remove the 30-year-old Batman Park slide on the advice of two safety consultants. Mayor Tim Laurence said it no longer met the Australian Standards of Playspace Safety. The slide will be replaced in conjunction with construction of an extended play space in Batman Park, due to begin next month.

Big honour for small business A new Melbourne City Council commendation program will recognise the contribution of small business to the city’s economic and cultural strength. The Lord Mayor’s Commendations program aims to reward businesses that have been operating for more than 10 years.

CARLTON’S iconic Brunetti restaurant has imported 20 foreign workers to help run the business at its new 400-seat venue.

Yuri Angele, co-owner of the 39-year-old ristorante, caffe, pasticceria, gelateria, and now pizzeria, said he had hand-picked a team of specialist Italian staff for the move from Faraday Street to Lygon Court on April 3.

It comes as the Federal Government vows to crack down on alleged rorting of section 457 visas, which allow businesses to sponsor skilled overseas workers.

Mr Angele said he stood by his decision to hire 20 kitchen and frontof-house staff, including executive savoury chef Giuseppe Santoro, in Italy to help run Brunetti when it moves to its new venue in the former Borders site, in Lygon Court.

He said while he didn’t advertise positions in Australia, the business ‘‘received applications all the time’’.

Immigration Department figures show cooks were the number one ranked occupation for primary visa 457 grants in 2012-13.

The number of cooks, chefs and cafe or restaurant managers in Australia on 457 visas rose from 1530 to 3250 in the year to January 2013.

Mr Angele said he had sponsored about 40 foreign workers through the business, out of a total 240 staff. ‘‘In all other areas our staff are local,’’ he said. ‘‘But in areas where we need key staff to deliver a specialised product we need to get them in.’’ He said the federal government reforms could cause issues for Brunetti if he could not hire specialised staff. ‘‘There’s a process to everything, even the pizza; it’s not just a dough made in five minutes,’’ he said. ‘‘There’s a procedure that isn’t common to most pizza-makers in Australia. Our business is a bit different to most others.’’

THE City of Melbourne will support a State Government review of legislation that allows non-citizens to vote in local elections after living in the municipality for just 30 days.

Local Government Minister Jeanette Powell pledged last week to ‘‘close any loopholes’’ that allow the enrolment of false or fictitious voters.

It follows an inquiry by the Local Government Investigations and Compliance Inspectoratewhich found there had been an attempt to enrol 442 ‘‘deceptive or fictitious identities’’ for voting in the October council elections.

Chief municipal inspector David Wolf said the investigation found several people tried to exploit the provision that allows non-citizens to vote after living in Melbourne for a month.

In all other municipalities, noncitizens can vote only if they pay rates. “We have issued formal warning letters to people involved in . . . the 442 false and misleading enrolment forms’’ Mr Wolf said. – Beau Donelly

Protection needed for river: council

BY ALANA SCHETZER CITY of Yarra council will lobby the state government to grant it the same planning protections recently given to neighbouring Boroondara to prevent over-development along the Yarra River.

Councils on both sides of the Yarra are experiencing a boom in planning applications for dwellings along the river’s corridors In October, Planning Minister Matthew Guy approved new planning controls for the Boroondara side of the Yarra that stipulated that any development must be compatible with the river’s landscape and ‘‘environmental values’’. The controls include height limits of nine metres above natural ground level, or 10 metres for sloping sites.

When introducing the Boroondara controls, Mr Guy said similar protections would be rolled out to other municipalities.

City of Yarra mayor Jackie Fristacky said it was imperative that the council received those same protections soon.

‘‘Given the demand, left unprotected, the risk is wall-to-wall development along the entire river corridor,’’ she said. ‘‘We are not opposed to development near the river but it needs appropriate setbacks from the river bank, and appropriate height controls to ensure development does not undermine the natural integrity of the tree canopy and river environment.’’

Council staff will meet Mr Guy this week to discuss when the amendment will be rolled out.

Yarra River keeper Ian Penrose said although water pollution was reversible, it was very unlikely land that had been buried under slabs of concrete could be rehabilitated. ‘‘To genuinely protect what remains of the Yarra’s green environs in the City of Yarra and elsewhere, the planning system should ensure that any new building on a property within sight of the river is no bigger or closer to the water than what is currently on the site,’’ Mr Penrose said.

Room for laughs No space is sacred when it comes to the Melbourne International Comedy Festival.

id you hear the one about the comic who told his jokes in a church? How about the funny men who co-opted a theatre kitchen for their show, or the comedian who does her entire routine on a bus?

As the 27th Melbourne International Comedy Festival takes over the city, just about every theatre and pub venue worth its salted chips will be purloined for the funny business of making people laugh. But while most of this year’s 400 local and 74 international acts will ply their jokes in more conventional digs, an increasing number of acts have been creative with their choice of venue.

Among the less conventional venues hosting this year’s shows are: a book shop, a chess club, a church, a bus, the Melbourne Brain Centre, a wine cellar and a locker room.

Festival director Susan Provan says such unusual venues are essential because there are simply not enough spaces available to house all the shows. ‘‘Comedians and festival staff always manage to find more broom cupboards and little nooks and I think that’s great because audiences love to go somewhere a bit different,’’ she says.

These non-traditional spaces add vibrancy and atmosphere to Melbourne that is missing at other times of the year, says Provan. ‘‘I think Melbourne is incredibly up for taking risks and allowing performers to do things in unusual places. The streets are so alive and that’s because people are walking up and waiting to get into places that aren’t normally venues,’’ she explains. ‘‘It creates life on the streets that doesn’t normally happen any other time of the year. There’s all kinds of possibilities.’’

For Jo O’Callaghan, the most important element of her routine is the venue – without it, there would be no show.

The Melbourne comedian will perform her fifth Op Shop Tour aboard a 50-seater bus at this year’s festival. O’Callaghan runs an op shop tour business in Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide, and this year’s show was born out of a 2008 performance titled My Life in a Tablecloth Dress.

“There are elements of my pre-existing show [based on the 10 best reasons for op shop shopping] but I now include guest comics,” she says.

“We generally have a couple of different people so it’s always a different show.”

Participants spend three-anda-half hours on the bus, stopping off at every Salvos, Vinnies and Sacred Heart Mission store they can find, all the while being entertained by their host.

Being in such close proximity to an audience might be daunting for some, but O’Callaghan says she enjoys the challenge. “Getting people on the bus means you have a captive audience, people literally can’t get out,” she says.

The limited space means there is more of an interactive element to her show.

“It’s very different to a normal stage show,” she says. “I’ve done everything from teaching a 12-year-old how to tap dance with shoes bought from the op shop to having someone start talking about their dead grandmother’s coat before I’ve even started my routine.”

O’Callaghan finds the audience members feel more like guests and they

usually end up sharing stories. “Every show is an evolving show,” she says. The bus travels all over Melbourne during the festival, from Cheltenham to Preston to Spotswood. O’Callaghan says she generally doesn’t give away the destinations because “that’s half the secret”.

The kitchen The Forum Theatre has a lot of space to host a show. There’s the main stage, upstairs, the Carpet Room and the Ladies Lounge. But this year, at the request of festival organisers, management is pulling out all stops to find an extra room.

Just left of the main foyer, near the cloak room, visitors will find the old Forum kitchen transformed for the first time into a festival venue called the Pizza Room.

“We sometimes use it for catering but we’re opening it just for the Comedy Festival,” says Forum venue programmer Keirice Farley.

Melbourne comedians Dan Allemann and Simon Godfrey will be the first to perform at the Pizza Room this month. The duo, also known as This is Siberian Husky, are not put off by the lingering scent of canapes past. In fact, the pair are getting used to appearing in food-related venues.

“Last year we were at the Lunch Room at Melbourne Town Hall,” says Allemann.

“Who knows, maybe next year we’ll be in a living room, at the dinner table, and, if things go bad, Hungry Jack’s.”

The Pizza Room holds about 30 people.

Allemann says the duo usually perform in rooms that are ‘‘cupboards” so the show is suited to a small space.

“We do alternative and absurdist humour and there’s certainly something gained from quite an intimate show.”

The church When comedians Chris Bedding and Werzel Montague approached St Peter’s Eastern Hill to see if they could perform their show Pirate Church inside, they not only got the OK but also the church’s blessing.

Father Hugh Kempster, who counts The Vicar of Dibley among his favourite TV shows, says he loves the idea of non-church goers using the historic building for entertainment. ‘‘We’ve been very involved with the community as a church over many years and I think doing something like this creates better connections with the city,’’ he says.

Before giving the go-ahead for Bedding’s show, which is described as a ‘‘loving satire about the wonderful world of religion’’, Father Hugh says he did have to make sure the material wasn’t too controversial. ‘‘We had some conversations about the show, but it’s comedy and it’s not going to be offensive. I was brought up on Dave Allen and I think it’s important the church should laugh at itself.’’

Parishioners of the church, which was built in the mid-19th century, are also on board with comedy being played in-house. ‘‘We’ve only had positive feedback from the wardens and parishioners. And I think it would be fantastic if more outside events came into the church. I’d love to see that happen.” he says. ‘‘I think a bit of laugher is a valuable salve. There’s been a lot of negative press about the Church lately, and I think it’s good if more is out there about all the positive stuff that does happen.’’

The chess club ‘‘Humourversity’’ graduate and veteran performer Peter Gleeson needs a lot of space for his comedy festival show, The Academy of Laughter. As the director of the show, Gleeson hopes audiences will participate in the group comedy experience. Part performance, part class, it involves standing together laughing, singing and improvising.

Gleeson’s objective is to create real, uncontrollable, infectious laughter, removing the idea of a traditional audience. “I don’t want them to be an audience; I want them to be part of the show,” he says.

Bendigo-based Gleeson has performed in front of crowds of more than 1000 people at events such as ComFest in the US, but for this year’s Comedy Festival he set out looking for a venue that could hold more than 200 people. “I put out a call on Facebook for venue ideas,” he says. “Eventually a man I knew from my busking days suggested the Melbourne Chess Club.”

Gleeson says the club, in Leicester Street, Fitzroy, is “a really nice size”. Rather than standing on stage, Gleeson places himself in the middle of the crowd. He says it is the best vantage point to coordinate a “Mexican wave of laughter” – one of his signature pieces.

The idea is to use the space for any mix of activities that will get his crowd giggling. “We do things – really embarrassing things – in front of strangers until they laugh.”

Gleeson says he is pleased to be able to perform in a venue on the city’s fringe, where he can move the crowd “out to the street” or “to a pub down the road” at the end of the show. “The laughter creates a great mood that spreads easily – who knows where we could end up.”

The bookshop It takes Crusader Hillis only minutes to rearrange his Fitzroy book store into a

75-person performance venue. Hillis has used his queer bookshop Hares & Hyenas as a pop-up venue for the past five years. As he welcomes Comedy Festival patrons for the second year, he reckons he has perfected the art. “Everything is rollable in the centre of the store,” he says. “For an audience of 15 to an audience of 80 – we can specifically cater to the show.”

This year Hares & Hyenas will host comedy quiz show We Should Know Better and Don’t Peak at High School, a take on bullies and life after school.

Led by Fiona Scott-Norman, Jacq de Vere and self-described “crip comic” Stella Young, Don’t Peak at High School enlists a long list of well-known Australians to talk about their bullying experiences. Megan Washington, Adam Goodes, Benjamin Law, Eddie Perfect and Penny Wong are just some of the guests who will discuss how they overcame bullying to reach a successful adulthood.

The show is based on Scott-Norman’s book of the same name, released in 2012. She says Hares & Hyenas was her first choice because it was “just a little bit more off-Broadway”.

“The trick with the Comedy Festival is to find somewhere that suits your purposes,” she says. “There’s so many different ways of being ‘other’ and we felt it was the perfect venue.”

Performing at the bookstore also married the book to the show, Scott-Norman says. “It just felt right doing it there.”

But, most importantly, keeping to a small venue outside the city centre guaranteed an intimate show, which Scott-Norman says is vital. “I’ve found when you talk about bullying, people want to tell their stories.” I Don't Peak At High School, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, April 4–20.

Quiet achiever

An entertainer takes his talent to the streets. By Harbant Gill

lad in bright, tight clothes and leading a happy band of headphone-wearing followers through the city is how David Naylor spends his day at the office.

His Silent Disco Walking Tours gather up to 50 people for hour-long immersive entertainment, and have been so popular since launching in February that he is returning to the city in March and April.

Naylor uses music, humour and spontaneous interactions with strangers to tickle the funny bone of Melbourne.

“It’s a partly historic tour, but there’s lots of improvisation to celebrate eccentricity,’’ says Naylor, who has been performing in various guises for about 15 years. “It will be very organic, and no two shows will be the same, because we will respond to what is happening in the moment.’’

Naylor is known to unleash flash mob routines in the busiest places in the city. At times he takes his audience to Hosier Lane – known for clicking cameras that capture newlyweds against the graffiti-covered walls

– to hold fashion shows. He has also split his group into two lines, facing each other, to give unsuspecting city pedestrians a ‘‘car-wash’’ experience as they walk through to the tune of the disco hit of the same name.

“We don’t touch them, but we do car wash movements. And they can’t not smile. It’s to create a silly moment. It’s about liberation and getting rid of inhibitions,’’ says Naylor.

“Sometimes we mirror people in queues.

I’ll say ‘see that guy in the white T-shirt, let’s do everything he does’. Once the guy realises we are mirroring him, he will start waving his arms and such.’’

Naylor graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce from Melbourne University and was a brand manager for food companies for eight years before he felt stifled in the corporate world. He studied movement improvisation with Al Wunder, from the New York Theatre of the Ordinary “that is all about finding the extraordinary in the ordinary’’. He also studied group work facilitation at the Groupwork Institute of

Australia, started going into corporations to liven up conferences, performed in festivals around Australia, created Cosmic Speed-Dating and landed a gig at the 2008 Melbourne International Comedy Festival with his Happy Yoga hour. ‘‘As a facilitator, I see my role is to elicit the untapped humour of the audience.’’

Laughter follows him wherever he goes.

“I like playing with the boundaries of conventionality in a safe way that’s fun and communal,’’ Naylor says. “The feedback is that the power of the groove is greater than their inhibitions. They can’t help laughing.

The whole thing has such a good energy that people can’t help but be swept in. ‘‘People often say ‘my cheeks hurt from smiling so much’.’’ I

T

he surprising thing about Skyfall, the most recent James Bond movie, was just how good that old Aston Martin DB5 looked. It first turned up in 1964, in Goldfinger, and almost 50 years later it still looked terrific. Or it did until the bad guys shot it up.

The 1960s was a great time for beautiful cars. As well as the DB5 we got the E-type Jaguar, the Lamborghini Miura, Maserati’s Ghibli, the pagoda-roofed Mercedes 230SL and a couple of gorgeous Alfas.

So what makes a car beautiful? The designers at Aston Martin reckon they’ve nailed it. It’s all about the golden ratio.

Or 1.61803398875… (the numbers continue for some time). They’ve placed so much faith in this ancient and legendary proportion that every design aspect of the new Aston Martin Rapide S is configured according to it. They can even show you a chart to prove it.

They claim, as a result, that the “unbelievably pure” Rapide S (pictured) is “the world’s most beautiful four-door sports car”.

So what’s the golden ratio? It’s a pretty cool number. Divide it into one and

examine closely. The Great Pyramid of Giza is said to employ it. There are those who say the facade of the Parthenon adheres to it and those who stridently disagree. Whatever, many architects and designers say that designs using it are naturally attractive.

Designer and author Lance Hosey refers to research that suggests the golden ratio works because the eye grasps it more quickly than others. “Shapes designed around it are inherently fast,” he wrote.

Which suits Aston Martin to a T. Everything from the Rapide’s grille to its flip-up aerodynamic tail adheres to the golden ratio.

The Rapide S certainly looks fast but whether or not it is beautiful remains entirely in the eye of the beholder. And whether it will still look good 50 years from now (when, going by the numbers we should be up to our 46th James Bond movie) remains to be seen.

If so, it could just be that the golden ratio works. I

istoric parish halls do not come up for sale every day.

Even rarer is a renovation that takes the best of what was and imbues it with all the modern convenience available today.

Part of the St Jude’s complex, the parish hall was built in 1918; five years after the foundations of the brick church were laid and 12 years before the construction of the vicarage.

It is an attractive red-brick structure, its steeply pitched roof and neat dimensions bringing to mind a Hansel-andGretel-type cottage: austere beauty is lent by the two slim, arched stained-glass windows that stand sentinel to the door.

Above the entrance and inlaid into the brick is the dated sign announcing the provenance of parish hall-turned-house, reading “St Judes Parish Hall, 1918”.

So it is surprising to open the custom-made, solid-timber double front door and see an entirely modern scene.

The interior walls of the house itself do not abut the parish hall’s original footprint. Instead, there is the feeling of space created by a bluestone-tiled passage that runs between the garage and the house.

Not that the outer and inner are disconnected. Cleverly themed details such as the steel cross design inlaid in to the glass stair treads in the state-of-the-art cantilevered staircase create a sense of continuity, and the original timber-vaulted ceiling and trusses turn the upstairs bedrooms from places of rest to spaces of quiet beauty.

But the kitchen is where it begins. Everything from the Miele stainless-steel appliances and soft-white marble benchtops to the silver metallic glass splashback speaks to the quality touches found throughout. Cedar french doors allow a peek inside the adjoining garage. The kitchen also contains a European laundry.

The adjoining living room benefits from a wide arc of open space, a feeling reinforced by two sets of cedar french doors that encourage exploration of the north-facing courtyard.

A meals space tucked on the other side of the feature staircase offers a secluded nook to eat and chat, set, as it is, slightly apart.

Upstairs the Australian spotted-gum floors of the lower level give way to carpeting.

It’s a pleasing transition as one moves away from the communal living areas to the privacy of two bedrooms (the main with its own space that could either be a walk-in wardrobe or a dressing room), two bathrooms (the main bedroom claiming the en suite with extravagantly spacious shower) and a retreat that could also work as an office or study space.

There are plenty of other features. Four split-system air-conditioners work to heat and cool the house. There is a video security intercom, electric-gated entrance and driveway, surround-sound speakers in the ceiling and a Bosch alarm system.

Design extras include honed bluestone-paved driveway and garage, and contemporary commercial downlights that bring a gallery feel to the downstairs interior.

MELBOURNE won its way through to the Victorian Premier Cricket grand final after a superb eightwicket victory over Dandenong at the weekend.

Back at the Albert Ground after the grand prix the Demons showed why they are favourites for the premiership.

Melbourne skipper Andrew Kent had no hesitation in sending Dandenong in to bat and his decision was soon vindicated as the Panthers spluttered to 5/81. Opener Tom Donnell, who scored nearly 1000 runs for the season, got a start with 36 but was unable to go on to a bigger score.

James Nanopoulos (45) and Darren Pattinson (41) were the leading run scorers for the Panthers.

The pair put on 76 for the sixth wicket before Pattinson was bowled by Alex Keath. His wicket sparked a fatal collapse as Dandenong lost 5/34 to be all out for 191.

Keath snared 4/41 from 13 overs while Demons leg-spinner Brenton McDonald continued his insatiable form with 3/61 from 32 overs.

The Panthers were in full voice during Melbourne’s innings after taking the early wickets of Kent (8) and Ben Way (8) to have the Demons 2/25. From there however it was all Melbourne, as Michael Hill and McDonald both got half-centuries at better than a run a ball to deliver an easy win.

McDonald wasted no time, making 89 off 66 balls, including 15 fours and three sixes. Hill was not far behind with 69 from 65 deliveries, which included 13 fours.

t has been many years since sporting allegiance and home suburb were closely related in AFL. Nine of the 10 Victorian clubs have outgrown their original digs and affiliations between AFL and VFL clubs have changed the football landscape.

But this season, club president Jon Carter hopes to take the Northern Blues Amateurs back to their roots.

The Amateurs, who will play in division four of the VAFA this season, share a name with the VFL’s Northern Blues, the old Preston Bullants club. They will wear the traditional Preston colours of red and white, and the uniform will feature the Bullants logo and ‘‘PFC’’. ‘‘We’ve had a few people come and watch and ask ‘is this the old Preston?’ ‘‘At some of our games in the past we’ve had old timers drifting into the ground and saying ‘you’re the old Preston, great, there’s a game on’. ‘‘We’ve got a lot of support in the community.

A lot of people see it as their club.’’

The Northern Blues Amateurs have spent the past two seasons affiliated with the VAFA with thirds and under-19s sides. It was originally formed to provide a place for Preston Bullants junior players to continue playing with each other. Late last year they were accepted in division four.

‘‘I had a very close link to the club [Preston] and when I came back to get involved I surprised myself by how sentimental I felt about it. ‘‘I know how it feels for a community to lose a club. My brother Rod used to play at South Melbourne and then they became Sydney.
