We know that security will get fights, but we want to ensure there’s minimal force used. We don’t want them to go and belt someone.’’ Acting inspector for the Maroondah police service area Jim Sutherland, who is also the Maroondah liquor licensing inspector, said there had been recent examples where venues had not handed over CCTV footage when asked. They were fined more than $600.

He said repeat offenders were hit hard. ‘‘Generally speaking, they do [comply] because there are substantial penalties involved when they don’t,’’ he said. ‘‘If they get enough warnings, we can review the venue’s licence with an objective to alter its trading hours.’’ Inspector Sutherland said keeping out under-18 patrons was a priority.

BY DAVID SCHOUT NIGHTCLUBS will be targeted as police ramp up their presence at Maroondah’s licensed venues this summer with the launch of a liquor licensing operation.

The operation, which has been running for several weeks, has police visiting pubs, clubs, sports clubs and restaurants in the area to ensure they are serving alcohol responsibly.

And at the more prominent venues — such as the Ringwood nightclub strip on Maroondah Highway — police are stamping out under-age entry and the serving of alcohol to people visibly intoxicated.

Operation co-ordinator Senior Sergeant Kevin Barrie, of Ringwood police, said responses ranged from giving friendly advice to reviewing a venue’s licence altogether. ‘‘It’s an ongoing operation, but it’s been set up primarily as a lead-in to the Christmas period. We’ll be making a visit to every venue, but we’re more likely to pay more attention

‘‘The venues know that if they’ve got an under-18 in their premises and the authorities rock up, it’s all over. These days lots of kids use false identities that hampers our ability to enforce this, but sometimes you can just look at a kid and tell they’re not 18.’’ Inspector Sutherland said there was a positive aspect of continual visits: ‘‘We like to fly the flag to show the community that the police are doing our job.’’ The venue manager at Daisy’s Hotel in Ringwood (who asked to remain anonymous) said he was pleased when police increased their presence. ‘‘It makes us feel safer in our jobs and leads to fewer problems.’’ ‘‘It’s everybody’s responsibility, from the bar staff to security, to ensure we are checking ID and not serving the intoxicated. We have to take every situation on face value; that’s part of the job.’’

Re: Royal commission: Abuse our ‘national disaster’ I do hope that Ian Lawther, myself and many others so affected by molestation will not end up very disappointed if this royal commission does not do what we all hope it should.

For centuries, the Catholic Church has put in place a structure so strong that I can’t see them giving up all they have created without a fight.

Re: Parkwood closure: Smooth ending to school scramble Hardly a smooth ending! Students and families are stressed out trying to negotiate this move. We still have yet to see any financial assistance from the state Department of Education and Early Childhood Development or even information on what assistance might be forthcoming.

Considering how many schools they are shutting down, you would expect they would have processes in place to enable a smooth transition.

Instead, we have had huge delays getting information and when it does finally come through, it’s not reasonable.

Instead of giving us any reasonable options for our children’s laptops, we have only just been informed we have to hand them back, despite having paid two years of a three-year contract — we get nothing to show for it.

The department has shown no consideration for the students and families: the trauma, disruption and costs involved are being ignored. If a business behaved in this manner, it would be front page news. Instead we are being ignored and our kids are paying the price.

Tony, my story is bad, but there are worse out there.

CROYDON Aquatic Centre is operating at ‘‘close to capacity’’ due to an overflow of patrons from the now-demolished Ringwood pool.

It brings into question how long Croydon can keep up with demand, especially if the construction of Ringwood’s new aquatic centre is delayed by councillors who feel more funding should first be sourced.

Maroondah chief executive Frank Dixon said a number of sports groups and programs operating at the Ringwood site had had to relocate to Croydon. ‘‘Croydon Leisure and Aquatic Centre (CLAC) has seen a significant increase in aquatic and leisure visitors in the past four months,’’ he said. ‘‘During peak aquatic times the lane spaces are operating at close to capacity.’’

The Weekly reported earlier this month that several councillors were considering an eleventhhour bid to stall the $46.5 million Ringwood redevelopment. The state government has pledged only $3 million to the project; the federal government, nothing.

The Weekly spoke with several patrons at CLAC and asked whether they were affected by the extra demand. Taki Oswald, who travels

from Lilydale to Croydon almost every day to use the pool, said it was now much busier, particularly as more lanes were being taken up for more swimming lessons and the Ringwood swimming squad’s training sessions. ‘‘The squad takes up extra lanes. They’re here three days. And with swimming lessons, there’s only about one or two public lanes Monday to Wednesday,’’ he said.

Kate Beattie, of Bayswater North, has a membership for all the council’s leisure facilities, which included the Ringwood pool. She said she wanted to see membership fees reduced while the Ringwood centre was out of action.

Mr Dixon said members were given long enough notice to cancel their membership: ‘‘The council provided over 18 months’ notice of the closure, so people renewing or taking out new memberships would have been fully aware of the services available to them.’’

The council had been expected to decide on a builder for the new pool at its meeting last night, but the item was not listed on the agenda.

Cr Willmott said Mr Dixon was still speaking to the preferred builder and the vote would now take place next month. He maintained that he would still put forward a motion calling for the project to be delayed.

INBRIEF Patron slashed A man has been charged over allegedly attacking another patron with a box cutter knife at Ringwood’s Club Dakota. Police said a 19-yearold Wantirna man attacked the 19-year-old victim about 2am on November 18. The victim suffered two cuts to the face that required stitches.

Inspector Tim Lee said the perpetrator appeared in the Ringwood Magistrates Court on Friday and was remanded in custody to reappear yesterday.

Station guards assaulted Two protective services officers were assaulted at Croydon railway station last Thursday. A 34-yearold Narre Warren man assaulted the officers about 7.15pm after refusing to present his myki card or provide his name and address. The three fell from the platform onto the railway tracks during the physical altercation. The man threatened the officers with rocks before they used capsicum spray to subdue him. The man fled but was arrested outside the station. He was charged with making threats to kill, assaulting police, resisting arrest, using indecent language, failing to give his name and address and failing to provide a valid ticket. Leading Senior Constable Michael Newgreen said many transport users were not fully aware of the powers of the PSOs. ‘‘People need to be aware they have power of arrest and can enforce offences under the Transport and other Acts as well if need be.’’

Police road blitz in high gear VICTORIA Police’s major summer road blitz is well under way in the outer east, with almost 1400 drivers breath-tested in one night.

Police from Yarra Ranges highway patrol — and extra officers from Mooroolbark, Belgrave, Monbulk and Healesville — targeted drivers leaving licensed premises last Saturday week as part of Operation Osbourne, one of four ongoing operations to be rolled out locally for the police’s Summerstay campaign.

From the 1382 breath tests conducted on November 17, police detected seven drinkdrivers, eight drivers who were speeding and four who were disqualified or unlicensed.

A further eight people received penalty notices for a range of other traffic offences. Six warrants for criminal matters were executed.

A 33-year-old Mt Evelyn man was caught about 7.54pm travelling at 132km/h in a 70km/h zone on Hull Road, Mooroolbark. He was charged with a number of offences including speeding, drink-driving with a reading of 0.121 on a zero alcohol condition, and driving an unregistered car. A 17-year-old Kilsyth male was also caught driving with two teenage passengers without an experienced driver, and for failing to display L plates.

Yarra Ranges highway patrol, said police were concerned by the behaviour of some drivers who took risks. Police would continue to crack down on drivers who ignored the road rules.

“Sadly [the holiday period], usually sees a rise in road trauma as people gear up for end-of-year celebrations, travel long distances and enjoy the warmer weather. ‘‘We want people to celebrate and enjoy the festive season, but we’re urging them to do it responsibly to preserve their lives and the lives of other road users.” The Weekly reported last

week that the Yarra Ranges highway patrol had received funding from the Transport Accident Commission for extra resources, allowing it to undertake operations such as Operation Osbourne.

Local area commander for Maroondah, Acting Inspector Jim Sutherland said Summerstay would overlap with Operation Raid, another highway patrol initiative, which ends on December 9. ‘‘Summerstay will operate all through the summer,’’ he said. ‘‘Its main aim is to get the road toll down during this time.’’

Court makes haven for victims

Corner slips under blackspot fund rule

PRINCIPALS of schools near a dangerous Ringwood intersection will meet Maroondah Council soon to discuss its future.

It would cost almost $1 million to install traffic lights at the intersection at Bedford and Great Ryrie roads, which is near four schools that accommodate about 4000 students.

However, despite concern from parents, the council and school principals, it is not eligible for state government black spot funding, as there have not been three fatalities there in the past five years - a key requirement for funding.

Maroondah chief executive officer Frank Dixon said the council was in a tough position. ‘‘It’s challenging if you can’t get external funding on council roads,’’ he said. ‘‘It all comes down to council priorities after that. It all depends on what funds are available at the time.’’

The Weekly first reported on the problem intersection in August, at which time the council stated it supported the call for traffic lights, but the roads’ closeness to the railway line meant costs would be high.

Mayor Nora Lamont said she was more concerned about the intersection of Maroondah Highway and Oban Road, where a pedestrian died on November 15.

THE first time Christine attended Ringwood Magistrates Court two years ago, she was hoping it would help her feel safe again.

A victim of family violence, Christine - who asked we not publish her surname - was seeking an intervention order against her then-partner.

But having to sit in the waiting room with him while he gave her ‘‘looks’’, having to give evidence against him while he stared her down in the courtroom, was almost too much. ‘‘Knowing he was right there was just frightening,’’ she said. ‘‘I’d never been through the court system before so this was just adding to it.’’

Fast-forward to this year and it was a vastly different experience, thanks to a new safe space at the court that aims to make the court process less intimidating for victims of family violence.

Christine used the space this year when renewing the intervention order against her ex. This time, she was able to sit in a separate room to him, where support staff were on hand to offer advice or a friendly ear, and security nearby to ensure her safety. ‘‘Knowing he couldn’t come in there, it was good to be able to sit and just breathe,’’ she said. ‘‘Having the support staff there too - even if they

don’t say anything, but just to have them there – is wonderful.’’

The protected persons space is an initiative of the Eastern Community Legal Centre, the court and other regional family violence services, and is only the second in Melbourne. ECLC and Community Law Australia hope the idea will be picked up by more courts throughout the state.

ECLC chief executive officer Michael Smith

said the reaction had been positive since the space was launched six months ago. ‘‘For victims of family violence, they’ve been through the trauma once. There shouldn’t have to be further trauma by going through the court process.’’

Christine agrees. ‘‘Going to court will always be an overwhelming experience but knowing you can go in this space gives me the strength to go back.’’

Jetes, pirouettes on way to ballet fortune

BY DAVID SCHOUT WHEN you compare their burgeoning careers, local ballet students Kirsten Browney and Coco Watanabe have followed a similar path.

Both started dancing at a very young age, both have managed to juggle busy study and training loads to achieve their dreams, and both moved to the same Vermont ballet school in the past year.

And now, thanks to hard work and dedication, the pair have been accepted into the exclusive Australian Conservatoire of Ballet (ACB) for an intensive two-year course. ‘‘When I was little I was always moving around and Mum got me involved in ballet,’’ Kilsyth’s Ms Browney, 19, says. ‘‘From there I’ve always had that passion for it.

I’ve always felt you can never be perfect so I wanted to strive to achieve better.’’

The full-time course starts in February, and involves several different dance disciplines in preparation for a career in ballet.

Belgrave’s Ms Watanabe, 17, has just finished her VCE studies and hopes her marks are high

enough to get into an arts degree at Melbourne University, which she will defer from so she can attend the ACB. She enters the school with an open mind. ‘‘This is a really great opportunity,’’ she says. ‘‘During year 12 ballet was a time for me to relax and have fun. ‘‘Doing something outside of school gave me a good life balance and forced me into good time management habits. ‘‘I love language and would eventually love to teach dance in the poor communities of Asia. ‘‘You can’t dance until you’re 60, so I’ll eventually go back to study.’’

Ms Browney will also defer from a bachelor of health science degree at LaTrobe University to attend the school. ‘‘My ultimate goal is to be accepted into a ballet company. To be honest, I’d be willing to go anywhere, whether in Australia or overseas.’’

Both girls paid tribute to their current teacher, Renee Grinstead, director of Vermont’s Enpointe School of Ballet, which they both currently attend.

Europe’s finest chocolate pours into Valley

BY PATRICK HUTCHENS THERE won’t be any chocolate waterfalls, everlasting gobstoppers or oompa loompas at the Yarra Valley Chocolaterie and Ice Creamery when it opens, but there is a touch of fictional charm surrounding the new sweetmaker.

An expert team of French and Belgian chocolate makers have been head-hunted by the owners of the soon-to-open chocolaterie in Yarra Glen to hand-craft unique confections.

The six chocolatiers have been formally instructed in chocolate-making at chocolate academies based in Europe and have moved to the Yarra Valley to take up their new jobs, sharing two houses rented for them.

Managing director of the chocolaterie Leanne Neeland says there are no real qualifications in Australia for chocolatiers, whereas in Europe it’s a profession. ‘‘This was a great chance to bring young, talented people to Australia. We wanted to bring that experience to the Yarra Valley.’’

Mrs Neeland and her husband Ian toured Paris and Brussels to interview shortlisted candidates, observing their chocolate-making skills by spending a day with each.

Remco Brigou, 25, from Belgium, is one of the chosen. He specialises in caramel-making and

decided to apply for the job because he wanted to see as much of the world as possible. ‘‘I saw the ad on the internet and thought, this is my chance.’’

Laura Martinelli, 33, from France, has also begun work, having trained as an engineer at university while taking on chocolate-making night classes at Maison Nihoul, a centuries-old school in Brussels. There she learnt to specialise in making pralines. She describes her new job in the Yarra Valley as a ‘‘great life project’’.

The chocolatiers began experimenting with new chocolate creations when they arrived last month. A five-metre cabinet will hold over 3000 handmade truffles for purchase, as well as chocolates made with fruits from the chocolaterie’s own orchards.

An opening date for the chocolaterie is yet to be announced, but it’s expected to start trading in mid-December. The chocolate showroom will include a cafe serving tea and coffee, light lunch and afternoon teas. Yarra Ranges locals have gained work at the chocolaterie, with 39 to take up jobs before Christmas.

Yarra Valley Chocolaterie and Ice Creamery, at 35 Old Healesville Road, Yarra Glen, will be open daily, 9am-5pm.

Youth equality, granted Ringwood’s EACH Social and Community Health and Mooroolbark’s Billanook College have welcomed grants to improve the mental health of gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and intersex youth. The funding is part of the state government’s second round of Healthy, Equal, Youth grants. EACH will use the grant to fund a role for a worker to co-ordinate and improve access to GLBTI support services at the health centre.

Billanook College will use the money on a creative peer education project tackling homophobic attitudes in schools.

Steane said council officers would inspect vacant blocks to ensure they complied with fire clearance notices sent to property owners recently. Owners who fail to comply will be charged with the costs of council maintenance works and may be fined.

Water babies, young and old Water Safety Week activities will make a splash at Croydon Leisure and Aquatic Centre from this Saturday. Throughout the week, lifeguards and aquatic education teachers will run programs such as a simulation of the different surfaces swimmers may encounter and how to swim wearing clothing.

Principals from 25 schools in the Deakin electorate met with federal Education Minister Peter Garrett and Deakin MP Mike Symon last Thursday to discuss education funding and cost-cutting.

Participants discussed the federal government’s national plan for school improvement and the state government’s education cuts. Mr Symon said schools in the Deakin electorate would benefit from increased funding under the plan, which needs the support of the state government to be implemented.

Community groups involved in sausage sizzles, cake stalls and other food-based fund-raisers have been invited to a food-handlers seminar in Croydon on Wednesday, December 12. The session will cover food legislation, safe food preparation, cleaning, sanitising and how to set up a food stall. Environmental health officers will also explain how to obtain Food Act registration, which is required to operate public food stalls. The course is $20 a person and runs from 2-4pm at the council’s Croydon offices in Civic Square.

This is no myna matter They are considered Australia’s most significant pest and are taking over backyards across Melbourne. NATALIE KOTSIOS finds out what is being done to combat the Indian myna and asks: why is this bird so hated? ohn Strachan is at war.

The battleground is his Oakleigh South backyard. The enemy? Some 23 centimetres of brown and black feathers, piercing eyes and a screech to match.

Or, as Strachan succinctly puts it, “the world’s most hated bird” — the Indian myna.

There are just three of them left in his yard now, “the cunning ones”, Strachan says.

“I had a plague of them around here. A neighbour was feeding them. I caught about 150 and haven’t had many since, except for these three . . . they become wise to it after a while.”

Strachan is just one of many like-minded ‘suburban environmentalists’ taking the growing problem of these aggressive birds into their own hands.

Indian mynas are in the top 100 of the world’s most invasive species, and were voted as the nation’s most significant pest in the ABC Wildwatch Australia Survey in 2005 — beating the cane toad and cockroach.

Indian mynas were introduced to Melbourne in the 1860s to combat insects in market gardens.

Now, it is estimated their numbers have swelled to the millions — they can lay up to seven eggs in one clutch, three times a year.

Research based on 20 years of ornithologists’ observations recently proved what many birdwatchers had long claimed — that the Indian myna was squeezing out native species by stealing food and nesting spaces.

But controlling the growing ranks of these socalled ‘flying rats’ is the choice of landowners. In Victoria, the Department of Primary Industries has yet to officially declare the bird a pest but people can capture and destroy them humanely.

Enter the Yarra Indian Myna Action Group, one of the first community groups dedicated to controlling and reducing mynas locally.

From humble beginnings in Melbourne’s north-east in 2010, it has led the charge in culling the birds. and now has about 380 traps in circulation, selling them right along Melbourne’s outer eastern and south-eastern corridor, from Ringwood to Ferntree Gully to Berwick.

The purpose-built wire traps are baited with dry cat or dog food, luring in up to a dozen birds at a time. They are then humanely euthanased either by gas or having their necks broken.

YIMAG’s vice-president Max Caithness says native bird species have declined 50 per cent in the past 15 years and part of this can be attributed to the Indian myna.

The mynas’ aggression goes much further than just driving other birds away — Caithness has heard reports of them throwing baby kookaburras out of nests, killing smaller birds and even driving possums out of their hollows. Home owners find them creating nests in eaves, or discover roof gutters clogged with the rubbish they gather and dump.

Caithness estimates the number of destroyed birds is higher than the 3000 the group has on its records — but even this has barely made a dent in the population.

“We’re hopeful of other groups forming so they can take control of their own areas, but for it to really take off we really need something happening in the council chambers. We’re not going to make an impact until we start catching thousands in each shire.”

While YIMAG has had support from the Shire of Nillumbik, not many other councils have jumped on board in supporting community efforts.

Yarra Ranges Shire is one of the few and has sponsored workshops teaching residents how to build their own trap and humanely kill the birds.

Montrose resident Roger Rooks attended one such workshop to take the problem into his own hands.

“We had about a dozen of them outside our bedroom window. They’d gotten into the eaves and were making such a noise and mess.

As much as he’s pleased with the results, Rooks says having to kill the birds himself was “no good”.

“The first time you do it, it’s not pleasant. You have this inbuilt thing, I think, not to kill birds. It just doesn’t seem right. But once you realise the damage the mynas do, it’s easier.

“I was surprised by the positive response we got when neighbours heard what we were doing.”

Strachan agrees that councils and other levels of government need to get on board. “If people aren’t wanting to kill them themselves, they could take them to a council depot where they can be gassed,” he suggests.

Strachan himself has no qualms about destroy-

ing the birds. He bought his trap through YIMAG directly, and as a plumber has seen his fair share of the damage they cause.

“They’re a pest. It’s no different to getting rid of rabbits.

“I reckon they’ve increased in the past two years. I just had to do something, they were driving me nuts with the mess and the noise.

“I love the birds, I love to see them around – but not the foreigners.”

Recent research by the Invasive Animals Co-operative Research Centre and Australian National University has shown significant decline in 11 species since the introduction of mynas — crimson rosella numbers had fallen from 5.9 a square kilometre to 2.4, sulphur crested cockatoos by 2 a square kilometre, and kookaburras by about 0.4.

These figures could be the impetus needed to finally get the bird officially listed as a pest. The Department of Primary Industries is developing a new invasive species management bill due to be submitted to Parliament by 2014.

If the myna is listed, it could pave the way for more government-sponsored action.

Until that day, Strachan will continue his backyard crusade against those last three “cunning ones”.

Gliding high: lickety-split on the asphalt

BY DAVID SCHOUT ATTHEW Cassar describes it as the closest thing you’ll feel to flying — perched on a skateboard and whizzing by at 100km/h, with a piece of plywood the only thing between you and the bitumen road. ‘‘It’s like being in a plane. You’re just focused on the road and nothing else matters,’’ he says. ‘‘People say we’re pretty reckless, but I don’t think so.’’

The 22 year old is the organiser of Victoria’s first closed-road downhill skateboarding event —the Yarra Ranges Downhill Festival — to be held this Sunday in Monbulk.

He says the Yarra Ranges is one of the best spots in Victoria to hold such an event because of its hilly nature.

The event will have two racing formats — slalom and downhill.

In slalom, competitors race down a short track of about 100 metres and weave in and out of the cones. The winner is the one with the fastest time.

The downhill event is simply a first-past-thepost competition.

Riders are placed into heats of four until the fastest is determined.

The event will take on a festival atmosphere with DJs, a sausage sizzle and raffle prizes.

All proceeds go to the Monbulk CFA.

No fear: Downhill skaters take their sport seriously — but still love the thrill.

Cassar says the slalom competition generally attracts ‘‘the older generation’’, while ‘‘up and coming’’ competitors are drawn to the downhill. ‘‘The road isn’t overly crazy. Competitors will be hitting about 65 to 70km/h in the downhill.’’

Cassar knows what it takes to succeed at the

sport, having raced interstate and overseas.

He enjoys riding in places like Apollo Bay and in the mountains, where the hills are long and winding.

He wants to spread his passion for the sport to the younger generation and believes that organising the first closed-road competition in Victoria is the way to do it.

Entry into the Yarra Range Downhill Festival is $55, and competitors will be split into either open or under-16 categories.

For the slalom competitions, entry fee is $15 for open and $5 for the under-15s.

I

s the tribe becoming too big for the faithful family sedan? Look no further than the Subaru Liberty Exiga seven-seater wagon.

Based on the Liberty platform, the Exiga started life as a six-seater wagon. Now, due to popular demand says the maker Subaru, an extra place has been set for someone in the 2013-model vehicle, which went on sale in July.

The seven-seater comes in two models — the Liberty Exiga 2.5i, which includes a DVD, and the top spec Liberty Exiga 2.5i Premium (our test vehicle), which adds leather trim, satellite navigation, reversing camera, Bluetooth compatibility, eight-way electric driver and front passenger seats, and a new 17-inch alloy wheel design and new-look door mirrors.

The former is priced from $37,990, the latter costs from $42,490, both plus on-road costs.

With a model upgrade midway through 2012, the entry-level Exiga added a reversing camera plus dusk-sensing headlights and steering wheel Bluetooth controls, voice command, audio streaming, USB connectivity and AUX jack.

Liberty Exiga 2.5i’s factory-fitted 4.3-inch LCD screen displays audio information and reversing camera images.

A saving grace on long, drawn-out journeys is the roof-mounted, fold-down remote-control DVD system with infra-red wireless headphones which can keep even the most tiresome travellers in the two rows of rear seats occupied.

With all seven seats occupied, there’s not much space in the back for two people’s luggage, let alone that for more than half a dozen. With the rear two rows of seats folded there’s a reasonably flat surface to take longer and more bulky items.

Designers, it seems, didn’t spend much time on the exterior, the Exiga having a boxy, oldfashioned look. The high sides, however, do make for plenty of head room – 40mm better than the Liberty – and good visibility. Expect to get fuel consumption of 8.6 litres per 100 kilometres. Once you go past the dated ‘maxi taxi’ exterior, the Liberty Exiga has much to offer, especially for the larger family, small sports team or groups of friends.

New focus for footy

Draftee swaps tools for AFL

THE commission set to oversee the Yarra Valley Mountain District Football League is to be made up of independent people.

AFL Victoria is seeking people to join the commission, which is aimed at decentralising the administration at the top level, increasing local collaboration and providing extra resources at a local level to assist leagues, clubs and umpiring associations expand the game.

The commission in the Yarra Valley area, which is yet to be formally named, will also encompass the Dandenong Ranges Junior Football League and the Yarra Ranges Umpire Association.

AFL Victoria’s Brett Connell said the commission would not be made up of key representatives from each league. ‘‘We want males and females and definitely people from an Australian Rules background who will bring a strategic focus,’’ he said. ‘‘We want people who think outside the square and we’re hoping they will see the greater good to football. ‘‘We don’t want it to be a representative board — we want independent people and independent thinkers.’’

As a result of AFL Victoria’s review of country football, the regional areas in the state have been divided into 13 different regions, with eight major and five smaller commissions, including the Yarra Valley, being set up.

Connell said the commissions would meet regularly across the year and would be made up of volunteers.

He stressed candidates must be independent and not hold governance positions within the region, at league, club or umpiring associations while on the commission.

WHILE other AFL draftees were packing their bags and having celebratory lunches on Friday, Melbourne draftee Matt Jones went back to work as an electrician alongside his dad George.

The 25 year old admitted he probably should be turning to his new career, but he didn’t want to leave his dad short of a worker so instead he was on the tools.

But this week those tools will be thrown into the cupboard in favour of the red and the blue training strip as Jones joins his new teammates for preseason training.

The former South Croydon junior was still unconvinced he would be picked this year, especially after doing two weeks training with Western Bulldogs last year only to go undrafted. ‘‘It still doesn’t feel real,’’ he said while speaking to the Weekly during his lunch break on Friday. ‘‘Once I get there and get started it will set in.’’

Despite pre-draft interest from several clubs including Essendon, Sydney, Western Bulldogs and Collingwood, Jones still discounted his chances of getting picked.

But none the less he sat down with his girlfriend and listened to the radio coverage of the draft, just in case a club took a chance on him.

At pick 52, his life changed forever. ‘‘First I heard Matt, then Jones and then Box Hill,’’ he said. ‘‘It was a huge shock, I didn’t know if I should be jumping around, it was a great feeling.’’

Those feelings got even better as his phone started to ring, first from family and friends, then a Demons coaching staff member who welcomed Jones to his new club. ‘‘I think someone from the club had called me within five minutes of the pick being announced. ‘‘My family came round straight away and so did about 15 of my mates. My phone has been ringing off the hook.’’

Jones’ mates also took little time in reminding his father that he would need a new worker. ‘‘Yeah, a couple of the boys were saying that. I don’t know what will happen, he may need to ask around and find someone else,’’ Jones joked.

But he still couldn’t reconcile the interest of AFL clubs with the possibility of being drafted.

In fact Jones revealed he believed his chance had left him. ‘‘I just turned 25 and not too many guys get drafted above 21-22 years of age,’’ he said. ‘‘Really I gave up on AFL footy when I was 18-19. To be on a list now is very special.’’

Family loyalties go topsy-turvy after Bombers swoop DYLAN van Unen comes from a family filled with Richmond supporters but those allegiances were brushed aside when Essendon picked him in the AFL draft on Thursday night.

The 22-year-old former North Ringwood junior has starred for VFL club Frankston Dolphins this past season and got little exposure as a possible draft pick, yet the Bombers swooped on him with pick 51.

Dylan’s uncle, Dallas van Unen, an assistant coach with the North Ringwood senior side, said his nephew was excited about getting his chance at AFL level. ‘‘He was just over the moon on Thursday night,’’ Dallas van Unen said. ‘‘There has been some interest from Essendon and Melbourne, Essendon was very keen. ‘‘His cousin, Justin van Unen, had gone through the same system and was promised the world but they didn’t go through with it so Dylan hadn’t gotten too carried away with it all.’’

Renay van Unen said he had already been told he had to get an Essendon membership for next season.

Frankston coach Simon Goosey, who is a recruiting scout for Essendon, said van Unen had impressed with his versatility. ‘‘They have been keen on him for halfway or a third of the way through the year,’’ he said. ‘‘He’s one of these blokes that is capable of playing on talls or smalls — he played on Tommy

Bellchambers when he rested deep in the square and he’s played on guys like Ricky Petterd. ‘‘He’s a player who doesn’t get flustered in the last line, he’s a good mark and a good reader of the player and can help out other backs.’’

Bombers coach James Hird told the Essendon website van Unen would get his chance to move straight into the senior side if he could prove he was physically ready for AFL football. ‘‘Dylan is a half back flanker who could fit straight into our team if we can get him big and strong,’’ Hird said.

Rams storm to Twenty20 driver’s seat

BY ROY WARD UNDER the bright lights of Lavington Sports Club, Ringwood made its case on Saturday night to be favourites for the Premier Cricket Twenty20 crown.

The Rams, who lost last year’s Twenty20 grand final to Prahran, took on a powerful Melbourne in steamy conditions. The Demons include former Australian Test batsman Brad Hodge and Victorian player Michael Hill.

But the young Rams were undeterred as Tom Stray made 70 of the Rams’ 6-147 batting first before rising seamer Michael Topp snared both Hodge and Hill on his way to 2-13 from four

overs, including a maiden, as the Demons made only 7-124 in reply.

Their win over the Demons, along with a win over Frankston Peninsula earlier in the day, means the Rams are well placed with four more games, including two this weekend, remaining in the Twenty20 competition.

Rams coach Gavin Kellar said his side focused on playing good cricket in all forms of the game and not on just making the Twenty20 finals.

He commended his side for standing up in the difficult conditions against quality opposition. ‘‘To play under lights against the likes of Hodge and Hill and then beat them left the boys pretty pumped up,’’ he said.

‘‘Tom Stray’s batting was exceptional and the rest of the side batted around him, which was our plan. ‘‘Topp got both the state players and got a maiden with his last over, which is almost unheard of in Twenty20 cricket. ‘‘Our 18-year-old leg spinner Pat Ashton also got three wickets and put pressure on some quality batsmen, while Joe Loorham took five or six catches in the two matches and showed great leadership behind the stumps. That role is a pretty important one during Twenty20 games.’’

Kellar also commended Stray’s batting in the shortened form of the game, especially his discipline to avoid giving up his wicket.

He also batted well in partnership with Rams opener David King. ‘‘Twenty20 cricket is not all about the bash and crash,’’ Kellar said. ‘‘It’s about good players playing good shots and extending on what they are good at. ‘‘At Australian level and international level they come out and crash and bash, but at this level you have to play to your strengths and to your game plan.’’

Ringwood plays Frankston Peninsula at Jubilee Park, Ringwood, this Saturday at 2.30pm then visits Prahran at Toorak Park on Sunday at 2.30pm.

Sharks break through for first victory of the season

Kilsyth captain sets pace KILSYTH captain Marc Steiner led his side to a win over East Ringwood at East Ringwood Reserve in the RDCA Wilkins Cup on Saturday.

Steiner made 65 as his side chased down the Roos’ first inning total of 207, making 7-215 from 76 overs.

Matt Clark added 48 while Chris Springett made 31 not out for the visitors, who now move into the top four. Darren Hill (2-46) and Jack Price (2-49) were the best bowlers for the Roos.

Lilydale scored a comfortable win over Eastfield but missed out on an outright win.

Lilydale’s Lucas Skelton made 150 not out on the first day as the visitors made 8-274 before they bowled out Eastfield for 86 on Saturday, then sent them back in, with the home side sticking around to finish out play on 3-125 with John Moulder taking 5-26 for Lilydale in Eastfield’s first innings.

Montrose scored a solid win over Warrandyte,

making 271 on the first day, then bowling them out for 191 with Josh Crowe taking 5-33 for Lilydale.

Templeton’s batsmen took it to an impressive win in a high-scoring battle with Wonga Park on Saturday.

After bowling out the Parkers for 191 on the first day, the Taipans, led by Nathan Owen (77) and Andrew Teakel (48) posted 9-244 to snare the win.

Croydon Ranges scored an easy win over St Andrew’s with its total of 8-265 too much for St Andrew’s 188 all out.

The Sharks didn’t control the whole day as the Parkers got to 3-128 at tea with Trent Sier (64) leading their charge before the Sharks bowlers snapped into gear in the final session to secure a much-needed win.

Sharks chairman of selectors Scott Hine said the win was much needed after three opening losses. ‘‘It hasn’t been the start we are after,’’ he said. ‘‘The boys have gone from the hunters to the hunted, so it was never going to be easy.’’

The Sharks’ batsmen proved the decisive performers in the match, finally clicking into gear after falling short on several achievable run chases this season. ‘‘It has just been the batting which has let us down in all three of our games,’’ Hine said. ‘‘We have been in position to win all three of them but our batting fell short. ‘‘We have been waiting for our batting to click and we made a couple of changes this week including bringing in 17-year-old Alec Kajewski who made 65 not out.’’

Hine said he hoped the win, along with some recent Twenty20 success, would push the Sharks onto more good results in the coming weeks. ‘‘We still have a young group, the majority of them are 22-23 years old,’’ he said. ‘‘So it hasn’t been easy to get back to that high level, but the T20 matches helped. ‘‘We have a confident bunch of guys and hopefully we keep going from here, although we have

North Ringwood has taken top spot on the ladder after defeating South Croydon in a great game of cricket.
