BY CLAIRE THWAITES THE lack of car parking at Maroondah Hospital has again been thrust into the spotlight with nearby residents lodging a petition calling for parking restrictions in their street.

Residents of Morinda Street in Ringwood East lodged the 54-signature petition with Maroondah Council calling for traffic congestion and noise concerns to be addressed as ‘‘the safety and well-being of our residents is being compromised’’.

The street has Maroondah Hospital at one end and Tintern Grammar School at the other.

At a meeting last Monday, the council voted to implement a parking solution in the street, with two-hour parking restrictions on one side of the road and new speed humps.

Council officers said hospital staff used the street for parking, raising concerns about the limited space available at the hospital itself.

The Weekly first reported on the hospital’s parking issues in May. Cr Paul McDonald said once again responsibility was falling on the council to solve the hospital’s parking problems. ‘‘The question is — is the state government going to do anything about it?’’ Eastern Health executive director at Zoltan Kokai said Maroondah Hospital had more than 550 car spaces available and staff used a separate section of the multi-level car park to ensure space elsewhere for visitors and patients. ‘‘The hospital is considering its options on additional car parking resulting from its [upcoming] redevelopment.�

One Morinda Street resident who signed the petition told the Weekly she had trouble reversing out of her driveway daily due to the parked cars.

Rowena, who did not want her surname published, lives near the hospital and said it was only a matter of time before she dented a parked car. ‘‘Numerous times I have to reverse out the wrong way and do a U-turn just so I can get out. We pay rates — we deserve access to our property.’’

The council estimates traffic improvement changes to Morinda Street will cost about $55,000.

Director of operations and infrastructure Trevor Welsh said the council estimated the new parking restrictions would be operational within four weeks.

He said the council did not have a timeframe for works to install the speed humps but residents would be notified beforehand.

Re: A tip for better taxi service in Maroondah The taxi services for all disabled people — not just those using wheelchairs, scooters and walking frames — is bad. All taxi passengers seem to be unhappy with the standard of taxi services — one does not need to check very far to establish this fact. The entire industry needs a good shake-up. A central booking office for all taxi bookings for all disabled people is just the start of the ‘‘process to reform’’. It highlights the fact that people who have disabilities do participate in all types of activities just like anyone in the community.

Thank you for being proactive in showing an inclusive community. It would also be good if the media ceased using the phrase ‘‘suffer from muscular dystrophy (or other conditions)’’ and used rather ‘‘has muscular dystrophy (or other conditions)’’.

MAROONDAH Council is frustrated at being forced to be the collection agency for the state government’s new fire services levy.

Mayor Rob Steane said he was ‘‘outraged’’ when the government last week confirmed legislation to change the tax collection format for funding Victoria’s fire services.

The government first floated its intention to move from an insurance-based levy to a property-based levy in September last year — with councils expected to collect the fee through rates notices.

Cr Steane and Maroondah’s chief executive officer Frank Dixon say this will lead to many ratepayers assuming the council is simply charging them more. ‘‘We are essentially becoming debt collectors,’’ Cr Steane said.

The council believes the levy’s collection should be up to the State Revenue Office because it is ‘‘a levy that funds a state government function’’.

ation of Victoria earlier this year and plans to raise its concerns again.

At present fire services are funded by contributions from the insurance industry, which passes the cost of its contribution onto customers through premiums.

Under the new levy, all residential properties — regardless of whether they are insured — will attract a fixed charge of $100 and nonresidential properties $200, as well as a variable fee based on capital improved value.

The predicted median levy price for Maroondah is $130.

Concerns raised by the council include how and when the income would be forwarded from councils to the government and what the levy would mean for non-rateable properties such as churches, schools or council-owned facilities such as sports grounds.

Last October the MAV made a submission to the government against councils having a role in the levy collection but was not informed of any developments before the legislation went through last week.

The children then took part in the school’s annual Alphabet Parade.

Each costume was created to represent a letter of the alphabet and aimed to celebrate the pupils’ achievements in mastering recognition of alphabetical letter names and sounds.

A crowd of the children’s families and friends came out to watch the parade during a special assembly. Prep enrolments for 2013 are now being accepted at Ruskin Park Primary School.

Push to finish bike trail

BY CLAIRE THWAITES BICYCLE Network Victoria is calling on the state government to make good on a commitment to complete the Carrum to Warburton trail — specifically, the missing link between Bayswater North and Mt Evelyn.

The link of about 7.1 kilometres, promised in 2010 as part of the Coalition’s election campaign, would be the final piece of the trail of nearly 100 kilometres.

BNV said that despite the government assuring earlier this year that the project was under way, there had been no movement or interaction with councils or other stakeholders.

BNV facilities development manager Jason den Hollander said residents should continue lobbying the government to get the track built. ‘‘There is a whole lot of nothing going on,’’ he said. ‘‘The benefits and upsides to this project are great.’’

Mr Longridge said that to ride the Carrum-Warburton trail at the moment, cyclists must risk riding on busy roads such as Mt Dandenong Road, Hull Road and Maroondah Highway. ‘‘It takes a lot of nerve to go on these roads,’’ he said. ‘‘There are a number of roads that link you back to the trail but none of them are ideal. ‘‘The trail at the moment is already about 90 kilometres and they are quibbling over just a few more kilometres.’’

A Department of Transport spokeswoman said the missing link was a priority project for Victoria’s cycling network.

She said a new cycling strategy was being developed by the state government that would underpin plans for the metropolitan trail network and the principal bike network.

community and leisure services Jenny Scicluna said the trail was a state government project and the council did not have an estimate on its cost.

The council, however, did undertake a feasibility study in 2006 into building a shared path along a 3.3-kilometre section of trail between Bayswater and Glen Dhu roads and estimated it would cost about $1.5 million. ‘‘The council will continue to work in partnership with the state government on the cycling project, and is understanding of the significant design and management issues that need to be resolved prior to the project being undertaken,’’ Ms Scicluna said.

House fire probed

A Mooroolbark man has been charged over an attempted armed robbery at a Lilydale store on Saturday night. Police were called out to the business on Cave Hill Road about 6pm and made a speedy arrest. The 33-year-old man was charged and expected to face Melbourne Magistrates Court yesterday. A 43-year-old store attendant suffered minor injuries in the incident.

Police are seeking information on a house fire in Tecoma last month. The CFA attended the blaze on the Belgrave-Ferny Creek Road about 3.30am on Sunday, August 26. The weatherboard house was completely destroyed. No occupants were present and it is believed the house has been vacant for some time. Far from their homeland, a whole new landscape

BY DAVID SCHOUT AS far as father-and-son combinations go, Croydon South’s Pahay Htoo and Lay Htoo could stake a claim to being one of the best.

After fleeing war-torn Burma and settling in a Thai refugee camp, the pair — along with their family of nine — came to Australia in 2008.

Now Pahay and Lay’s remarkable journey has culminated in a fresh start and full-time work with landscape restoration company Recoland.

They have become an inspiration among the many migrants who have left Burma to start a new life in Maroondah, home to 15 per cent of Victoria’s Burmese migrants.

While their English is fairly limited, Pahay can tell you the exact date his family arrived in Australia and that he enjoys the exercise as part of his job at Recoland.

Recoland’s business systems manager Adam Cole, who has coordinated their development within the company, says their hard work and polite attitude is a credit to them. ‘‘If we tell them to be at a job site at 6.30am, they’ll be there at 6am,’’ he says with a laugh. ‘‘Sometimes I tell them the job starts later so they can arrive on time. ‘‘We all really enjoy working with them, and it’s great to simply employ good people, no matter where they’re from.’’

Mr Gitsham’s ears pricked up, and he employed Pahay and Lay as part of the company’s casual planting crew. ‘‘From day one they showed incredible initiative,’’ he says. ‘‘They really wanted to show us they were hard workers, make a difference and give back for showing faith in them. ‘‘That’s just how their culture is — they don’t like to take anything. We would tell them to have a lunch break and they would be back working within five minutes.’’

Australia’s biggest kitchen showroom*

A 27-year-old Ferntree Gully man has been charged with 31 offences, including attempted murder, following dramatic scenes in Croydon last Monday .

The man, who was wanted by police, was spotted in Croydon with another male in a four-wheel-drive. Police then surrounded the area.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said officers tried to stop the four-wheel-drive in Sherlock Road, Croydon, about 11.30am.

The men managed to drive the car through the police cordon, and allegedly drove the vehicle directly at police, forcing officers to fire shots.

The men drove off and plunged down an embankment onto the Lilydale railway line before being arrested. Buses replaced trains for some hours while police assessed the scene.

A 30-year-old Montrose man has been released pending further inquiries.

An artistic salute to the lives of Diggers

BY CLAIRE THWAITES THOSE attending the Mt Evelyn Youth Enterprise Shed were so inspired after a talk from the town’s RSL president, they came up with a novel way to commemorate the nation’s Diggers.

The group of young people decided to paint the shed with a special mural depicting a soldier standing in front of the Mt Evelyn hills with ‘Lest We Forget’ written around an Australian flag.

Completed earlier this year, the mural took a week and a half to finish with four young artists coming up with the design and doing the painting.

Mt Evelyn RSL president Roger Boness said he was chuffed when he discovered the mural had been painted. ‘‘We had no idea they were painting it. The RSL members were absolutely delighted.’’

Mr Boness had spoken to the group about the meaning of the word Anzac and the tradition of Australia’s involvement in war.

An artillery forward observer in the Vietnam War, Mr Boness also shared personal experiences with the group, who age from 15 to 18. ‘‘I hadn’t realised we were going to get such a

reaction. But evidently they appreciated what I told them.’’

He said the mural enhanced the soldiers’ memorial gardens, because the youth shed was next to the memorial site. ‘‘It’s a lovely gesture. We are very, very pleased that we have formed a relationship with the shed group. They are a fantastic bunch of kids.’’

Mr Boness said the shed members have also been asked to keep an eye out on the memorial garden for them, as previously it had been a target for vandals.

YES co-ordinator Brad Colling agreed the relationship between the two organisations was a positive one. ‘‘We didn’t expect them [RSL members] to react so strongly at all,’’ Mr Colling said. ‘‘They really liked it and we are happy that happened. It also means the young people now appreciate what the memorial garden is all about.’’

Mt Evelyn Youth Enterprise Shed is open Wednesday to Friday and offers young people a place to chill out, play music or do art and engage in various community activities.

The story is set in the Japanese town of Titipu, where, having introduced themselves, Japanese nobles meet a wandering minstrel named Nanki-Poo. He tells them of his love for Yum-Yum. Yum-Yum was engaged to Ko-Ko, a cutprice tailor, but he has been sentenced to death for flirting, so Nanki-Poo returns to find his beloved Yum-Yum and marry her.

IVISION 2 grand final day will be a bumper occasion for Montrose Football Club.

The Demons have both their seniors and reserves in their respective Eastern Football League division 2 season deciders with both sides overcoming tough competitions to play on the final day of the season.

The Demons seniors will face Rowville while the Demons reserves face Upper Ferntree Gully, with both matches at Jubilee Park, Ringwood this Saturday.

Under first-year coach Brett Johnson, the Demons seniors faced a torrid season as they, along with Rowville Hawks and Mooroolbark Mustangs, took turns at the top of the division 2 ladder with no side ever holding true control of the competition.

Schilling. As with all close battles it has come down to which side could find their best form in the finals and the Demons did that in the major semi-final, beating the Hawks by 24 points after trailing early in the match.

Much like its season, the Demons struggled to find their best football in the opening of the semifinal but then clicked into gear late in the second term to eventually run away with game.

But the grand final will be a whole new ball game as the Hawks have proven just as good as the Demons during this year, notably their win over Mooroolbark in the preliminary final.

The Demons reserves have turned the tables in their competition this season, supplanting successful Rowville and Waverley Blues teams to top the league and qualifying for the grand final.

The Demons beat Upper Ferntree Gully in the semi-final by 27 points and while they start as favourites for the premiership will not take their opponents lightly.

Norsemen put faith in defence

BY ROY WARD THE Eastern Football League’s best defence will take on the league’s best attack when Norwood faces Vermont in the major semi-final at Bayswater Oval this Saturday.

The Norsemen, who won the minor premiership, spent the weekend on the sidelines as the Eagles beat Scoresby in the qualifying final.

The winner of the match will take the early spot in the EFL division 1 grand final.

Norsemen coach Kevin Tibaldi said his side had to stop the potent Eagles’ forward line if they were to win.

‘‘We know we’ve had the best defence in the league this season and they’ve probably had the best attack,’’ he said. ‘‘So it could come down to how well we play or how well they play.’’

The Norsemen lost their most recent meeting with the Eagles, who are the only team to score 100 points or more against them this season. ‘‘Stopping their attack will be important,’’ Tibaldi said. ‘‘Vermont is in red-hot form right now but we will go in with confidence. ‘‘We have identified a few things we can fix up from our last match against them.’’

The Norsemen do hold a double chance, mean-

ing if they lose to the Eagles they will need to make the grand final the long way. ‘‘We want to win but the bottom line is you need two wins from here to win the premiership,’’ he said. ‘‘The loser of this game will play three matches but the equation will stay the same.’’

Tibaldi said his players were looking forward to entering the finals fray and would do so with a full list.

The Eagles beat Scoresby without star midfielder Ryan Mullet and former AFL player Heath Black. It remains to be seen whether both will return to face the Norsemen.

Saints welcome time off TOO much time off is better than no time at all.

North Ringwood sealed the early spot in the Eastern Football League division 3 grand final with a 31-point win over Glen Waverley Hawks in the qualifying semifinal on Saturday.

The semi-final win means the Saints will have another week off this week as the Hawks play Boronia in the preliminary final this Saturday.

Saints coach Brett Moyle said dealing with an extra week off was a good problem to have. ‘‘It’s good to have got there,’’ Moyle said. ‘‘Some people will say it’s a problem because we have two weeks off out of the last three but that’s something we have to deal with. ‘‘It’s much better to have to worry about having the extra week off than be scrapping to make it through the preliminary final."

Moyle praised the work of midfielders like Dwayne Kelly and centre-half back Max Melzer in a tough, contested match. ‘‘I thought the work of our midfielders to win the ball in those contested situations was an important part of the game,’’ he said. ‘‘Nothing much gets past Melzer, does it? He was excellent. From the last 10

minutes of the first term onwards I think we got some momentum and started to run the ball which led to our good play in the second term.’’

After rising from division 4 into the division 3 finals this season, the Hawks faced a tenacious and speedy Saints side and found themselves outmatched for much of the game.

With the lead moving past 40 points in the third term the Hawks summoned some consecutive goals to get within 27 points at the final change.

Hawks midfielder Brad Riddle had a running shot at goal in the opening minutes of final term but missed followed shortly by a Saints goal which all but ended the Hawks’ chances.

Moyle said he was concerned until the Saints got that first goal in the last term. ‘‘I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t worried,’’ he said. ‘‘But once we got that goal I thought we would go on with it.’’

The Saints will play in the grand final on September 15.

Ringwood lost to Boronia by 47 points in the division 3 elimination semi-final on Sunday.

‘Fascinating duel’ on the cards, says Demons coach MONTROSE coach Brett Johnson believes nothing separates his side and Rowville heading into the Eastern Football League division 2 grand final at Jubilee Park, Ringwood this Saturday.

The Demons spent the past week in training following their major semi-final win over the Hawks in week 1 of the finals.

The Hawks turned on an impressive performance in the preliminary

final, thumping Mooroolbark by 70 points on Saturday.

Johnson said the Hawks gave the Demons coaches plenty to think about following their win over the Mustangs on Saturday. ‘‘I think we are both very evenly matched,’’ he said. ‘‘Only a game separated us during the season, both teams are quite good defensively and both structure up pretty well.

‘‘There will be some excellent individual match-ups. The game will be a fascinating duel.’’

Johnson also revealed the Demons hadn’t given up hope of getting both Tom Dodd (dislocated shoulder) and Heath Roberts (back-related hamstring) back for the grand final. ‘‘We will still give them every chance to to play,’’ he said. ‘‘They have both recovered well this week and are still a chance to

play.’’ Johnson also said he was confident his defence could handle Rowville’s Cody Morris, who kicked six goals against Mooroolbark. ‘‘Our back six have done well all year,’’ he said. ‘‘Our main defenders can all play tall and have done so throughout the year.’’
